Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a fine final day of May notes, and now it is time for you to post until the final day of May cows come home.

Good morning, all! I have a few more Herbert charts to proof today, and I will be all caught up with the copyists. Thirteen of the 28 scores have been sent to me for first edits, six more are with the copyists, and I've proofed eleven of them. We're doing well. My goal is to have the scores finished by the middle of July so that the printing and assembling of scores and orchestra parts can be finished by August 1.

I've got one enormous score of 300+ bars, the Act One Finale, and that will take several days to proof. The gigantic Act Two Finale and Opening of Act Three, both over 300 bars as well, are with the copyists, so I expect them later in the week or the next. So that's my day: proof what's needing it and scan and send corrected scores back to Curtis for corrections.

More coffee and to work!

No coffee here, but some potential get-the-blood-flowing music - we just put up my brother's latest song from his current project

It may be coincidence that it's called FIRE IN THE BELLY, similar to the phrase that's been being bandied about in politics lately - but the work is totally non-partisan as far as I can tell

FIRE IN THE BELLY - song written by my dear brother - definite aerobic workout potential

(maybe a little Eagles influence in the accompaniment??)

Your bro's FIRE IN THE BELLY is very catchy, DR FJL.   It's a good summer driving song.

Why did it end so abruptly?

Seriously, I must have messed something up when i up loaded it in Imovie.

May i shill another song of his that i've shilled for before, but just seems great for the start  of unofficial summer?
BREEZY MORNING - imperfect rhymes abound, though :)

An observation about Spencer Tracy and BK's suggestion that Tracy didn't need to hang out with war veterans to prepare for his part.  I took BK's meaning, but I'd respectively suggest that Tracy actually did...or, actually "had"...hung out with war veterans.   His studio was filled with them.  His pals were among them.   Anything Tracy might have needed he drew from his own life's experiences, including his astute observations of those immediately around him.

I had a wonderful time in Medford...it was great to see family and friends! The weather was cool and cloudy most of the time, but still pleasant. As I usually do, I take my nostalgic drives around the Rogue Valley, visitin all of my childhood homes...although this time I did not get to all of them.

Our house on Crest Drive in Central Point (1975 to 1978) was finally painted blue (from it's original maroonish red color) and has a new garage door. It looks quite nice, although the majority of the houses on that street and the cross street all look either abandoned or are inhabited by people who have no lawn mowers.

Our house on Bradbury St. (1964 to 1969) looked better then it has in many years. It had been looking a bit dumpy last time I was in Medford.

We met at the Bi-Mart in Ashladn (where I worked the Christmas season of 1983) and the we headed up the mountain for our hike. It is so, totally beautiful there!!!!

I've seen it three times during the history of the show (the original, the revival and a showcase production with a friend). I can't see it again. It rips my heart out and I'm a mess. I hear great things about this production but I'll miss it because I just can't do it again.

I've been getting teary-eyed each time I think about the play. At least I know the ushers at The Golden, so if I end up a total "mess" by the end of the play, well... I know they'll take care of me. -Alas, I'm only half-joking with that statement.

We met at the Bi-Mart in Ashland (where I worked the Christmas season of 1983) and the we headed up the mountain for our hike. It is so, totally beautiful there!!!! It did rain on us briefly, but otherwise the weather during the hike was nice.

DR Jane had me take a snap of some type of flower for DR Laura, but unfortunately it did not turn out. But here it is...

And here is the very first apartment that I lived in, right after moving out on my own in 1983. I only lived there for about 6 months, I think, before I moved up here to Salem in early 1984.

Jane, Keith and I had a devil of a time finding it as it turned out we were a few blocks further east then we should have been. It is on Alida St. in Ashland, and it turns out that my sister-in-law, Barb, lived in these very same apartments back in the early 1970s when she was a college student.

My apartment, which I shared with a co-worker from the hotel named Howard, was upstairs at, furthest to the left.

Oh wait, here are a couple more shots of the area that surrounds Medford. Like I said, it is beautiful country.

It is not normally this cloudy in June, however. Summer like weather would be the norm at this time of year, but the west coast seems to be having a difficult time getting even spring to start.

I still have a couple of bites left from the half i brought home.  i'm sure you are impressed as the cakes aren't very big.

when the weather is nice we sometimes eat lunch outside if the small section with the expanded sidewalk is available.  We need the extra room so people can get pass the crowds that tend to gather round Sherlock.

DR Elmore, I have lost a few pounds over the last mont or so, but not enough to really be noticeable. I had crept up to the 200lb mark and I am now down to around 195 lb.

And of course I am sucking in my tummy in that photo, so that helps.

i just read some sad news on fb.  our vet just wrote:
Quote
RIP Roswell. Damn dogs snatched you off your porch while you were enjoying a spot of good weather. I'm so sorry that we couldn't save you. You were an awesome cat and you weren't even mine.

Roswell lives/lived down the road from us & is the cat of our friends.  We was a sick & injured feral kitten when they captured him about 6 years ago.  as a result of his injuries he had seizures that were pretty much controlled with medication.  he didn't go far from the house when he was outside.

That's great, Fred...and the other video, as well! ;D

Well, in today's disaster news....nothing like the Army Corps of Engineers releasing massive amounts of water upstream to get your mind off of a tornado somewhere else.   It's an interesting thing, the area that will be hit the hardest is an area that used to be sand dunes along the river.  It was developed into a wealthy planned "town" but is basically part of SC.   Anyway, a lot of people have no sympathy as the people who built mansions on sand dunes right next to the river rush to move all their belongings out of their homes before the water comes.   Of course they are working on building a dike around the area, but if that doesn't work the homes will be flooded for at least 2 months.

I tried to volunteer helping today.  I took off work early and went to the area where they told volunteers to go.  I was told that they just hadn't organized that yet.  So I went to the area where they were sand bagging, but they didn't seem to need volunteers.  So then I got a hold of a friend who needed help at her house, but when I tried to get there, the state troopers wouldn't let me in because I didn't live there.  So, I didn't get to go help her.  What a cluster

I have been in the basement, not hiding from bad weather, but going through boxes for stuff to donate to the AAUW garage sale.  I knew there were things still wrapped in 1988 newspapers from when we moved into this house, but also found a few items wrapped in January 1981 newspapers.  That was when I packed up my apartment preparing to move into Richard's house after we were married that month.  Amazing.

I agree & he usually does.  He was only on his porch while someone was home & dogs running up to it seems so unlikely.  What i don't know yet is if the door to the enclosed porch was open or if he was on the big porch, either way he was close to the house & likely safe from wildlife.

Title: Re: THE FINAL DAY OF MAY

because of all the snow in the Northwest!!!!!   The Missouri River starts flowing this way at the continental divide in Montana, then crosses through north and south dakota before it gets here.   There are a number of dams along the way.  Because of the excessive amount of snow melt and the recent very heavy rains upstream, they have to release water from the dams upstream so that they aren't overtopped.  That would be much worse.  The problem is we've had excessive rains too.  So the ground is saturated and the river is already flooded.   There isn't much choice.  They probably could have released it less and sooner, but they didn't so there you go

We aren't the only place that will be flooded, towns upstairs will be flooded too

It's a really strange feeling. It's like the whole town is just waiting for the flood.   Which reminds me....they keep saying the city wells are fine, but they are really close to the river so I'm going to stock up on water before they decide it's a problem.  Think I'll go get some right now.

I am very frustrated with myself and Chase.  I did not notice that Gabe's conservatorship was maturing, and the stupid friggin' bank never sent me a maturation notice and rollover notice, and now they have stuck it in another 8 year term instrument, which is not statutorily allowed, as Gabe has to have access to it upon his 18th birthday.  I called the bank today and they are saying a court order will have to be drafted or else they will charge me $600 to change the term of the CD.  Ridiculous.

Ridiculous.

Can they prove they sent you a rollover notice?  It is my understanding that they are required to do so

Good Evening!

The current production of The Normal Heart truly deserves all the praise it has been receiving. I did find the staging of the final scene a little awkward, but watching Joe Mantello go through all of that was truly moving and awesome. It's sort of hard to believe that he took a break from acting the past couple of years to concentrate on his directing career. It doesn't show.

I did cry, but not as much as I thought I would have. I know the play, so that helped to ease some of the emotional overload - I knew what was coming. I also think that I've cried enough tears in real life over the loss of some friends and colleagues who have died from AIDS. As the song goes: ain't got no tears left.

After I got out of the show, I decided to hang out a bit at the stage door, just to see who would come out - and also to watch everyone who was waiting for autographs and photographs. It seemed that a majority of them were were waiting for Luke McFarlane ("Brothers & Sisters"), Lee Pace ("Pushing Daisies") and Jim Parsons ("The Big Bang Theory")...

And then it was fun to watch how those actors made their escape from the crowd. ;) *Although, I couldn't blame them. There were a lot of high school kids there, and they were behaving in a most unseemly and rude manner. Even the security guard was getting a bit fed up with some of the hooting and hollering.

*I did get a chance to chat briefly with Wayne Wilcox on his way out, and that was nice.

And...

The Golden shares the same stage door entrance/exit with The Jacobs and The Majestic... And it turned out that The Phantom of the Opera was just getting out too, so I decided to wait around for a few minutes to say Hi to Hugh Panaro.

I caught his eye as he came out - and before he got mobbed by a group of high school kids asking for autographs and photos. Once he finished meeting and greeting, he walked over to me, and asked if I was heading home. And since I was, he said he would give me a ride uptown. So, I hopped in his car, and we had a nice catch-up session before his driver dropped me off at 86th Street. It was a perfect way to end the evening.

DR Jose, have you ever ridden on a Sky Express Bus? They're in deep doo-doo after this morning's accident killing four.

Nope. I've never ridden Sky Express Bus.

...And as much as I've taken the Chinatown busses in the past, until they find a way to streamline their boarding processes, I don't think I'll be taking them again anytime soon. The crowds just seem to get worse and worse, and there's so much pushing and shoving and yelling and screaming during the boarding process since there seems to be no coordination between the tickets they sell online and at the ticket windows.

I've also grown fond of Bolt Bus. And with Bolt Bus, you get a free ticket after a certain number of trips.

It's only available on DVD (http://www.amazon.com/Crystalstone-Pirates-Midnite-Movies-Feature/dp/6301967313/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1306912186&sr=1-1) as a two-fer with a 1988 movie called "Crystalstone."  Amazon doesn't have any listing of the movie on VHS...not even out-of-print listings.
