Title: SWEDISH NOTES
Post by: bk on June 13, 2007, 12:17:54 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very Swedish, and now it is time for you to post until the Swedish cows come home.  They're currently in Denmark having a sex-change operation.

Unless things have changed since I was in school (they have, we are no longer known as the Thirteen Colonies), Flag Day is celebrated tomorrow, 06/14/07.  It will soon be 6/14 in Oz, but I think that would be silly for them to celebrate U.S. Flag Day.

Good morning Fred, in abstenia. I think it said I was here when I was not. I popped in very early (around 6:45am) and was alone. I didn't post and left to do the deed but the system kept me logged in, hence my name and/or computer being visible.

I am here now.

New York shoppers, a warning!

Adorama, a camera kind of store on 18th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues (closer to 6th) is an AWFUL store. I wouldn't recommend shopping there for any reason. The staff is rude and the store is disorganized. It's unpleasant from the time you walk in the door. Avoid this store, in person or on line. Good prices are not worth the snotty, dismissive attitudes and I wouldn't buy from them on-line because of the way they treat their customers in person.

Michael S - Re Xanadu:  do you have any inside info on this?  Wouldn't it get out if he hadn't really injured his foot?  If it were something face-saving, wouldn't they try for something less verifiable like an internal illness?

There didn't seem to be anyhting wroing with Carpinello's performance, though.

Good morning, all! I am not happy. For six months now, 2007 has been a rather unpleasant year for me, and after six months of dealing with my father's death, my own physical ailments, poor sleep, sibling problems, a ridiculously apathetic employer, something has got to change.  Don't know what yet but I'm working on it.  Thank God for friends!

I have nothing else to report after my second sentence at the moment, but to mention how much I am enjoying Leo Lerman's journals, which I'm reading before going to bed.  I'm reading about Henry VIII on the subways and buses.

Lerman's journals begin in the 1930 and I'm currently in the 1970's.  I didn't know that Maria Callas was one of his best friends from 1955 or so to her death, so I was reading about Callas and the Juilliard master classes, a number of performances he attended, itroducing Marlene Dietrich to Callas, and a lot of fascinating and scandalous gossip:  the best last evening was the Jackie Kennedy-Onassis-Callas triangle and Leo's speculations on how Onassis' predilection for anal sex was affecting his marriage to Jackie.  Mrs Kennedy also became friendly with Lerman, he suspected, out of a desire to keep tabs on Callas, but there in an interesting journal entry on helping Caroline Kennedy with her homework on art and how well-behaved the Kennedy children were.

My late friend Paula Lawrence keeps turning up a lot, and I wish I'd had her introduce me to Leo. We had several friends in common, and I'm enjoying his wit, kindness, and grace as a writer.

This came in an email.  I'd never heard about this, but it seems reasonable, so I thought I'd pass it on.

Microwaving Water!

(I did not know this, did you?)
I  microwave water for coffee all the time .
Now, I don't think I will be doing it this way anymore.

A 26-year old man decided to have a cup of coffee. He took a cup of water and put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off, he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that the water was not boiling, but suddenly the water in the cup "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand, but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to his face which may leave scarring.

He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him stated that this is a fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner, something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as a wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc., (nothing metal).

It is however a much safer choice to boil the water in a tea kettle.

General Electric's Response:

Thanks for contacting us, I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach th e boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds! before moving it or adding anything into it.

Here is what our local science teacher had to say on the matter: "Thanks for the microwave warning. I have seen this happen before. It is caused by a phenomenon known as super heating. It can occur anytime water is heated and will particularly occur if the vessel that the water is heated in is new, or when heating a small amount of water (less than h alf a cup).

What happens is that the water heats faster than the vapor bubbles can form. If the cup is very new then it is unlikely to have small surface scratches inside it that provide a place for the bubbles to form. As the bubbles cannot form and release some of the heat has built up, the liquid does not boil, and the liquid continues to heat up well past its boiling point.

What then usually happens is that the liquid is bumped or jarred, which is just enough of a shock to cause the bubbles to rapidly form and expel the hot liquid. The rapid formation of bubbles is also why a carbonated beverage spews when opened after having been shaken."
If you pass this on you could very well save someone from a lot of pain and suffering.

Just a guess. I have become jaded. When a lead actor leaves a role during previews for health reason I always think it of a kinder way of saying he didn't work out. (Happened to me) Since the musical uses roller skates it seemed to me like a good excuse.

Wednesday morning greetings!  My afternoon yesterday consisted of a tour with coworkers of The Job Center (http://www.thejobcenter.org), which is a place I hope I'll never need, but am glad to know it's there.  The tour ended at 3:30, and I used some comp time, ended my workday, and went to a friend's home to look at some lovely Longaberger baskets (I was good - didn't buy anything).  Dinner at home with the family, then I crashed.

My question for ask bk day:

Isn't it just a little bit of a drag always having to be up and about at midnight to post the daily notes?  Hasn't there been the odd occasion when you wanted to go to bed early and didn't WANT to stay up until midnight to post the notes?  Don't get me wrong - I know we all appreciate it.  But it seems a big sacrifice on your part!

In Ye Days Of Olde the notes used to be posted in the morning, but that schedule was always dependent on when I arose.  At some point, I started doing them at midnight and that seemed to work better for me and everyone else.  If I'm super tired, which has happened on occasion, then I write them earlier, post them, but change the date and time stamp to reflect that it's after midnight.  Then I close down the current day's discussion and start the new one.  It's happened a few times over the years.

If the lease actually got signed and we could raise this damned project out of its current quagmire, I would be ecstatic.  The problem is, we were told last week that if our funder didn't sign by Friday, it was going to another renter.  With the new landlord making these threats and our ielusive billionaire remaining incommunicado, this situation cannot continue much longer before anything positive is removed from the picture.  If we lose thos lease, I'm out.  This situation is unfair to all the institute's employees involved in these negotiations as well as the landlord. Perhaps this is way of closing us down? Who's to know?

LUCY/MAME in anamorphic widescreen in just a few days!

I searched high and wide for the LUCY/MAME laserdisc, and I watched and enjoyed it as a guilty pleasure quite q few times. But like so many beloved laserdiscs, it will be retired once this DVD comes out.

Since Mame is a 70s film, we get a pretty good shot at decent color from Warners - they only really seem to screw up the films of the 50s and 60s and mostly the classics.  Go know.

Dear reader MattH should go to his HTF and inform them  that The Glenn Miller Story is now perfectly framed (the telecine operator mis-framed the first transfer).

Microwaving Water!

I didn't know about this, DR FJL. Thanks for passing it on. I have, however, heard enough other stories about problems with microwaving--from scientific sources--to have virtually stopped using my microwave oven. Not using it really isn't the inconvenience I expected. But I would have thought heating some water in it was one thing I could do quite safely! Oh, well.

DR Michael Shayne - You're jaded.  James Carpinello did injure himself.  And, trust me, if they had wanted to replace him, the producers would have had someone else lined up already - especially so relatively close to opening (June 26).  With Andre Ward going in now, they're left with just one male understudy/swing.  That cast is small(!), and it really can't afford to get any smaller.  -Heck, Andre is actually one of Mary Testa's understudies with the way the doubling works for that small cast.  *Although, I would love to see Andre on for Mary one day - now that would be comedy!  ;)

Had a wonderful, if hurried, lunch with MBarnum yesterday, as I journeyed south to Salem to play for the Methodists (a To Kill a Mockingbird reference, and a propos in this instance).  I return this evening and think I will go back to the same restaurant--really, really yummy Gardenburger which I know BK especially would enjoy.   :P

Betsy and I started The History Boys about a week ago and I must say that, while it wasn't bad (and I especially enjoyed the one kid who sings), it just kind of left me cold, and we haven't returned to it yet.  Guess we should get around to finishing it.

RE: James Carpinello in Xanadu.

Well, I just got a few e-mails.  And my roommate just got a few e-mails.*  Again, James really did injure his foot.  Unfortunately, the injury is severe enough that he will have to be off his bad foot for up to four months.  Never a good thing for an actor - on roller skates or not.  So, technically, at this point, he has temporarily left the show.

I haven't heard anything yet about re-casting, but it does seem like they are going to try to rotate through the three covers - all of whom are quite different types.  For now.  I think with Andre Ward going in, that would cause the least amount of "shuffling".  However, Peter Samuel is also one of the Sonny covers, and he's normally Tony Roberts' understudy!  *My roommate is friends with the other Sonny cover, Curtis Holbrook.

Speedy recovery vibes to Mr. Carpinello.

-And I also believe that producers are smart enough to know nowadays that it's much harder to cover someone leaving - or being asked to leave - a production - due to the internet.  If someone leaves, they leave.  If they ask them to leave, they just do it.  Better to get it done quick and easy, rather than have it be speculated about for weeks on end on the chat boards and in the NY Post.  ;)  -Bad press is bad press.

I am in love with the website the Dialectizer:

here is a monologue from Man of La Mancha

My friend, I have lived almost fifty years, and I have seen life as it is. Pain, misery, hunger...cruelty beyond belief.

I have heard the singing from taverns and the moans from bundles of filth on the streets. I have been a soldier and seen my comrades fall in battle...or die more slowly under the lash in Africa. I have held them in my arms at the final moment.

These were men who saw life as it is, yet they died despairing. No glory, no gallant last words...only their eyes filled with confusion, whimpering the question: 'Why?'

I do not think they asked why they were dying, but why they had ever lived.

When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Too much sanity may be madness. To seek treasure where there is only trash. Perhaps to be practical is madness.

And maddest of all, to see life as it is and not as it ought to be.

THE REDNECK VERSION

DR elmore3003, I just checked the cast list (http://www.tschreiber.org/theatre/index.htm), and no, it doesn't seem to be him.

Since Barney's been dead over a year, I guess not! Sure looks like him.  BTW, this revival of YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is getting wonderful reviews.

I've got to track down Kevin Kilner. Last time I saw him was around 1995 when he was acting in the anniversary production of THE GLASS MENAGERIE.  I met him right after he'd gotten back from playing Mitch STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE with Michael Chiklis as Stanley in Columbus, OH. I always thought the director should have reversed the roles.  Either he or his girlfriedn at the time lived a few blocks away from me.  I guess that CLOSER episode has me waxing nostalgic.

Isn't it a bitch to be jaded about stories like this?
This actor left due to creative differences.
Or left to spend more time with their family who live in California.
Or want to take the role in a different direction

Sometimes I guess a cigar is just a cigar

One thing's for sure, this forum has some extremely selcouth discussions.

Earlier in his career, Larry Flynt tried to selcouth and couldn't make a profit; so he decide to selraunch instead.

When I'm involved, our discussions often move from selcouth to uncouth.

Culture Clash - A pleasant surprise:

On Saturday Woody got a letter summons for jury duty.

On Monday he called the number printed on the letter, spoke with a being of the human persuasion, and exlained that he couldn't do jury duty because he didn't drive.

"OK", said the human entity, "put that on the form and send it back."

That afternoon he mailed back the form.

Today he received a post card informing him that he has been excused from jury duty.

Did anyone see Kyra on Letterman last night? The last few times she's been on to talk about THE CLOSER she goes off on some stupid story. Last night it was a long story about a time when she arm-wrestled a woman in central park.

There was hardly a mention of the show. When Dave asked her about the new season, all she had to say was "It's good!".

Her hair was straightened and in a huge beehive sort of thing, with some of the hair hanging down. I was disappointed st the lack of publicity, but this morning, GW Bailey did a great interview at our local radio station with lots of talk about the new season & TNT, so now I feel better.

I have to say that I love my job with the institute which is why the past month has been so demoralizing for me.  I know that we're one project in several, many much more important than ours, but I like what I'm doing and I think we can offer much to musical theatre knowledge if we continue.  Clearly, we are going to continue.  At some point, in the near future, I need to approach our benefactor and talk to him about my book idea.

Ron Raines just called me. Charlotte graduated from high school this morning! I feel as old as Babes in Toyland!

Happiness is receiving two boxes from Deep Discount and discovering you've received something you'd TOTALLY forgotten you ordered.

In my case, it's the complete series to "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century".

Also included:

The Garbo Box

and the HD DVDs for

Mutiny on the Bounty
Field of Dreams
Brokeback Mountain

I have now heard twice (once on the Tonys and once on a discussion board) how Kander and Ebb were the longest-running Broadway songwriting team in history.  I don't exactly know when they began, but somehow I doubt it was PRIOR to Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Jones.

Morrison Foundation (http://www.morrisonfoundation.org/john_kander_and_fred_ebb.htm) reports:

Quote
In fact, the team of Kander and Ebb is the longest-running music-and-lyrics partnership in Broadway musical history.

In 1962, he made his Broadway debut as a composer. The musical was A Family Affair. It was that same year that Kander met Fred Ebb.

Ebb had been a writer for nightclub material. He also wrote a television show called, That Was the Week That Was. When Ebb and Kander met, they instantly complimented each other’s abilities.
Their first success, the song, My Coloring Book, came the same year. In 1966, their first major success—Cabaret

How the recocile this with the following on Schmidt & Jones
•   Shoestring '57 ( Ben Bagley Revue,1957)
•   Demi-Dozen (Julius Monk Revue, 1958)
•   The Fantasticks (1960)

The Swedish Chef Hat Story

Once upon a time, several years ago, DR Sandra was perusing Ebay when she found a listing for a Swedish Chef Hat. She thought the description hilarious, with things like "Of all the things on Ebay, this certainly is one of them," and other such amusing sayings.

She posted a link to it on this board because she thought it was so funny. The next thing we knew, BK had bought it. He later presented it to her for Christmas when we were in LA.

She decided to take the hat with her whenever she traveled and take a photo of it. Swedish Chef Hat was photographed in Las Vegas, Palm Springs (on the Lucy statue), family reunion in Kansas, and even on The Fifth Floor (a mystical place at the university in the English Building on a floor that doesn't exist).

Not as funny as DR Sandra would have told it, but she was carried out of the house a while ago kicking and screaming (literally) by her brother.

Next came another episode from the ANGEL fourth season set. This one had the new "savior" causing everyone to be happy, concented souls except for Fred who could see the "spirit" was a rotting, diseased entity. Now, Fred has a target on her back with everyone gunning for her to shut her up.

I ended the afternoon watching one of the Basil Rathbone/Sherlock Holmes features that TCM has been playing today - TERROR BY NIGHT. This is one of the briefest of the films but has always been one of my favorites.

The print they were using was in terrible shape. The one in the restored set from MPI was barely rescued in time, but it looks very nice.

Quote
RESTRICTION OF IMMIGRATION

"The question to-day is not of preventing the wards of our almshouses, our insane asylums, and our jails from being stuffed to repletion by new arrivals from Europe; but of protecting the American rate of wages, the American standard of living, and the quality of American citizenship from degradation through the tumultuous access of vast throngs of ignorant and brutalized peasantry from the countries of eastern and southern Europe."

RE: James Carpinello in Xanadu.

Carpinello.

Peter Samuel is Tony Roberts understudy!!!  Is he also 85?

Kevin Kilner needs to work a lot more than he does.  I have always enjoyed his acting, as well as his good looks.

I just read that Julie Bowen, Mark Valley, Rene Auberjonois and Constance Zimmer have all been let go from the show.

John Larouquette joins the firm next season, and Christian CLemmenson, who plays Jerry "Hands" Espinson, has become a series regular instead of a guest star.

Julie Bowen was pregnant in real life, and I wonder if she requested a leave of absence to be at home with her child.

Mark Valley was in a pilot for another network that didn't get picked up.

I was most surprised with Rene's ouster. Yes, as a managing partner at the firm, he gave orders, but he didn't have any sexual involvements or court cases, so I suppose the producers thought he was expendible. Candace Bergen could be the head honcho.

•   Shoestring '57 ( Ben Bagley Revue,1957)
•   Demi-Dozen (Julius Monk Revue, 1958)
•   The Fantasticks (1960)

I do not understand!

der Brucer

It is, of course, utter nonsense and simple fact-checking as you've done, proves that Schmidt and Jones are, in fact, the longest-running music and lyrics partnership in B'way history.  I suppose some pedant (as just happened on a message board) will say that Kander and Ebb have had more shows on Broadway, but that's not what the quote says or means - especially when the Morrison report states they met in 1962 and began writing then - which means clearly that they consider that the start of their partnership.

If one considers MIRETTE Tom and Harvey's last show, that was 1998, so it's around a 46-year collaboration. Fred and John have about 42 years.

Just something random:  When I was in high school, I played in a piano quartet (2 pianos, 8 hands) and it was a fantastic experience.  About a month ago I was thinking about that experience and had a thought.  What if I recorded some of those quartets on my own?  So, I went out and purchased a few titles - William Gillock's "Champagne Toccata" and Ingolf Dahl "Quodlibet on American Folk Tunes"  the latter being quite technical.  Anyhow, I started the "Champagne Toccata" today and I must say, it's easier with 4 people!!!  More later....

Question for bk - What is the new Kritzerland release?  Have you mentioned it?

Second question for bk - When you started the "other" label, you were on record as saying you wanted do strictly digital sales.  If that's so, are you planning on going that way with Kritzerland in the future?

I'll announce the new release on Monday.

My idea with the other label was to do strictly Internet sales and forget about brick and mortar.  It was a revolutionary idea at the time (remember, both Ghostlight/Shk-a-boom and PS Classics had yet to "borrow" the label business model that I'd created), and no one was willing to do it.  With Kritzerland, I have taken the distribution by others out of the equation.  I do not sell to stores unless they agree that there are no returns.  I believe other labels are already thinking about "borrowing" that, too.  So, for Kritzerland, it's Internet only and certain specialty shops around the world.  I sell far fewer copies than I normally would, but I don't get any returns and that's the way I want it.

As for the whole Kander & Ebb, Jones & Schmidt, etc., discussion... I believe "they" are basing the length of the career from the first Broadway show by each team to their current (new and running) Broadway show.  Productions of new works Off-Broadway and regionally aren't being considered.

But that's not what "they're" saying - if that's the game then they should state that's the game.  What they, in fact, say is that Kander and Ebb are the longest-running music and lyrics partnership in the history of musical theater and that is simply incorrect.  They don't specify for Broadway shows only or any of that stuff.  They don't specify that in order for them to make that statement that they count from the first B'way production to the latest.  Mr. Ebb died in 2004, so counting Curtains as this year isn't really fair - and if you go down that road then Schmidt and Jones are STILL the winners even if you start with first B'way show and don't count the Fantasticks - first Schmidt and Jones B'way show 110 In The Shade, opened in 1963, Flora in 1965.  In other words, Mr. Ebb hasn't written anything since 2004, hence that is when their partnership ended.  Whereas, Mr. Schmidt and Jones have written since that date.   There is no spin you can put on it that makes it come out Kander and Ebb.  I love John, and I liked Fred, but they don't win this game.

And, as I said, the key sentence is "longest-running partnership in musical comedy history" It's Schmidt and Jones all the way, followed by Maltby and Shire, followed by Kander and Ebb.

Correct.

Speaking of a reissue, though, I'm currently thinking about reissuing Classical Broadway, which is classical chamber music by Charles Strouse, Cy Coleman, John Kander, and Harvey Schmidt.  Would there be interest?

One way to avoid having water (or any other liquid) "blow up" from microwave boiling is to put a wooden skewer or something like that in the water.  This gives the liquid a rough surface along which it can form bubbles.

(Yep, I've heard of this before.)

AARRGGHH!!

I needed to say that. >:( Yesterday, I ordered four items from the "rare vinyl" section of Footlight.com.  TODAY (I know, I know...I should've checked before I ordered ::)), I looked on eBay and there are TWO copies of one of the "rare" albums...and for much less than what I got it for at Footlight.com.  It's the New York Shakespeare Festival at Lincoln Center production recording of Threepenny Opera with Raul Julia.  The copies on eBay (right now) are available for $24.99 or $4.49.  Both say excellent/near mint vinyl.  I got the Footlight.com record for...more than that. :P However, I think that with the other records, overall I got a good deal.  All the others were half price!  And Footlight specified that the copy that I got was the quadrophonic version.  Maybe that'll justify the price difference (he said hopefully).

Last night, I got the cast album of Grey Gardens.  Unfortunately, I didn't know the cover designs of each version and since Amoeba only had one I assumed it was the new B'way Cast Album.  It wasn't, it was the older one.  Now, I don't know how much the show has changed and I don't know if there's a bigger band on B'way, but the song performed on the Tony Awards show sounded a whole lot bigger than this recording sounds.  As always with PS Classics, the orchestra sounds like they're in a tiny closet somewhere, and the singers sound like they're in a slightly larger closet.  I suppose it's an art to make a band sound smaller than it is - not an art I favor or understand, however.  The same producer did the same thing on Sondheim's Bounce - took a fifteen or seventeen-piece band and made it sound like ten.

As to the score, I was a bit taken aback that it's basically one Sondheimesque song after another, with the same rhyme schemes, orchestral riffs, and Bruce Coughlin's orchestrations are real Jonathan Tunick wannabees.  There's one number where, at the end, they do the exact rhyme and rhythm scheme of Pretty Little Picture from Forum.  Do these writers today have nothing better to do than emulate Mr. Sondheim ad nauseum?  While I liked the number on the Tonys, this CD at least is a big bore.  Maybe the new B'way version is better, although I suspect that it will still sound like the band is in a closet.

For fans of BOSTON LEGAL:

I just read that Julie Bowen, Mark Valley, Rene Auberjonois and Constance Zimmer have all been let go from the show.

John Larouquette joins the firm next season, and Christian CLemmenson, who plays Jerry "Hands" Espinson, has become a series regular instead of a guest star.

Thanks for the update.  IMHO:

It’s obvious Clemmenson has become a regular, I’m pleased to see it is official.

And it’s been obvious for awhile now that Auberjonois isn’t really in the show anymore.

Just when Brad and Denise  finally becoming interesting, as a couple, they are out of the show.

I found Zimmer sto be a great addition, until they paired her up with Clarence & took away her spunky personality, such a shame.

That leaves only one strong female lead in the show.  I wish they would keep Zimmer.

Would there be interest if I could release the original soundtrack recording of Jacques Demy's Une Chambre Un Ville (A Room In Town), a gorgeous 100 minutes of music, mostly sung ala Umbrellas of Cherbourg - the score is by Michel Columbier and it's absolutley gorgeous.

I did make a stop at Cafe Lalo on the way back from dinner, and, sadly(?), I think it will be my last.  I was a little apprehensive about stopping there tonight after my last less-than-ideal experience there last time, but since I wanted some cookies, well...

-After the woman at the counter reminded me that she had to give my ticket to the waiter (so that they could get my cookies from the case), she proceeded to talk to one of the bus-boys for a bit... and then to one of the managers... and just chit-chat from what I could tell.  -And then she looked at my ticket that was still in her hand.... Oooohhh...

-The guy who was getting the cookies from the case could not find the correct bins with the cookies I wanted - there were three different ones I had asked for.  I began pointing to the case, and speaking up a bit, but he couldn't hear me.  Then when he checked back with the cashier, she told me, "Oh, we don't have those."  -I then informed her that, "Yes, you do," and proceeded to point to the proper bins - which were labeled.

-When I finally got rang up, the cashier "apologized", "Oh, sometimes they bins aren't labeled properly."  -Whatever...

-I made a quick peek in the bag just to make sure three cookies were in there, and left.  Well... I guess I should have made a closer inspection.  I had ordered three different types of cookies:  Chocolate Chip Anise, Espresso Chocolate Chip Walnut, and Mango-Coconut-Macadamia.  Well, I think I got the Chocolate Chip Anise - it was so crumbly and dry - and old(!) - that I really couldn't tasted anything, but I could see that there were chocolate chips in it.  As for the other two cookies, well, I think I ended up with two more of the same.  :-\

...And I just knew it wasn't going to be worth the effort to head back there to correct my order. Instead, I just won't go back.

Thanks for the travel vibes, they must have been at work as we came in for our landing in Orlando. I was listening to the cockpit - tower (it was on Ted -United- Airlines) We were diverted around weather a couple times and then when we were getting ready to come in the tower said there was a wind sheer warning and some microbursts going on. You could see it out the window. The tower asked the pilot if he was still going to land and he said, "yes I'll keep an eye on it"   So, we descended and you could feel the wind pick up dramatically, we tipped to the right a bit then landed just fine.  Seconds later we were in the microburst, a downpour, 60 mph winds and golf ball sized hail!!!  You couldn't see any farther than a few feet out the window.   The tower told the pilot to take his time as no one was cleared to do anything, we were the only game in town.   So he inched along the runway and finally turned left to go to the terminal.  The hail was bouncing off of us like crazy.

We got close to the terminal and couldn't go the rest of the way because of lightning and the storm.  We ended up sitting on the tarmack for an hour before we could get off the plane and go into the terminal.  The pilot came back to the cabin immediately and told us everything that had been going on, that he could see that he was going to just beat the storm.  You could tell it had been a bit hairy for him, but he was fabulous.   They kept us well informed, kept the air running the entire hour.  The captain let the kids in the plane tour the cockpit.  It was really pretty cool

Der Brucer is becoming a reality TV addict.

But not just any reality TV.  He's specializing.

First, he discovered Next Food TV Star.

Next, he discovered Hell's Kitchen.

Now, he's starting to watch Top Chef, on Bravo.

I hope he doesn't expect me to cook like that.  Not and keep my day job, at least.

Good night, Jane.  It's time for me to leave work.  I don't have rehearsal, but I'm not going right home, though.  My sister wants me to come over and put up a new light fixture in her bathroom.  This wouldn't be much of a problem except that the hole in the wall where all the wires come out isn't centered above her mirror and the light bar only has a specific spot where the wires can go in!  I hate it when that happens. :P

Jane, my mom's birthday is June 16th, also.  We're planning a surprise party.  She knows that we're having a barbecue, but she thinks that it's going to be a birthday/Father's Day combo on Sunday.  We're actually having some of my parents' friends come over on Saturday to surprise her. :)

Well, sadly, Cafe Lalo has been in a slow but steady decline every since its popularity peaked after it was featured in "You've Got Mail".  Strangely enough, the thing that made them famous - their pastries, pies and cakes - have become very pedestrian.  Meanwhile, their "real food" offerings have gotten better.  -Their cheese course selection is quite good and quite a nice deal too.

Correct.

Speaking of a reissue, though, I'm currently thinking about reissuing Classical Broadway, which is classical chamber music by Charles Strouse, Cy Coleman, John Kander, and Harvey Schmidt.  Would there be interest?

It is a wonderful album and I recommend it highly!!

Actually, unless you were listening to the tower/pilot audio, you never would have known what was happening. The pilot really was that good.  After we landed and the rain, wind and hail hit there were audible gasps on the plane, by that time we were already on the ground

A young actress has been hired to fill Zimmer's spot, but I couldn't remember her name.

I was not a fan of Zimmer's character and Clarence together. Once again, all this "in-breeding" in the office just gets SO old after awhile.

Watched some interesting programming tonight.

I began with the Philo Vance mystery THE DRAGON MURDER CASE. As the movie began and I saw the set-up, I realized I had seen this many, many years ago, but I had no clue as to how it turned out, and, sure enough, I did not guess the identity of the murderer. I had gone in a different direction entirely.

Next I watched the first TCM movie on their "gay images in cinema" festival. This one was a 1955 film noir called THE BIG COMBO. Great cast: Cornell Wilde, Richard Conte, Brian Donlevy, Whit Bissell, but the two of greatest interest were Lee Van Cleef and Earl Holliman playing lovers in the film. Van Cleef was astonishingly beautiful then, and they made a very sexy duo. And when one was killed and the other was beside himself with grief, these killers actually ended up being the key to the downfall of head man Conte. Some really stylish things about the film, too, made for Allied Artists on an obviously low budget.

This is a movie that deserves to be better known.

Boy would I love to come in to NY.

I would do it as a limited edition of maybe 1200 copies.  The sound is spectacular, but the film is virtually unknown - never had a US release and bombed in France.

YES (after Return to OZ I'll presume you're on a roll)

The detail the HD DVD displays is breathtaking.  The transfer isn't totally perfect, of course, for the film is 45 years old.   But those imperfections are few and far between.  WOWEE!

Actually, Mutiny On The Bounty looked incredible in the theater - 70mm and six track stereo, here in LA at the Egyptian.  It was so incredible that I went back no less than six times to see it.  The HD DVD must be sharper than the regular DVD, which has real softness problems in longer shots (the closeups are fine).
