THE DO THAT DID

Well, you've read the notes, the notes did the do, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're about to do the moo.

As mention by DR RLP, the last images on "Oh What A Lovely War".
It's been done a few times since (and no doubt before) but the frozen shot in "Elvira Madigan".

The final shot of Chinatown.  The final shot of Repulsion.  The final image of Tony Perkins in Psycho.  The final shot of James Stewart in Vertigo.

And example of HENDIADYS?  Well, Dead and shiny is probably more effective as a phrase than SHINY DEAD.

This is SO not Rebecca Luker.

Rebecca Luker is a blonde.  Rebecca Luker plays Mrs. Banks.

Mary Poppins is played by Ashley Brown.

TOD:

The final shot of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Which closely parallels with the final shot of the original version of The Omen.

I have ten more pages to read from last night.

I must say, even though BK hated the show, I found it to be fun and exciting (even though there was a steamroller for Best Musical). Yes, if you compare it to broadcasts of the past, it was not as good as the shows in the late 60s and 70s but I'm not going to trash this production. I enjoyed it

I cheered when David Hyde Pierce won. I was so glad. I don't dislike Raul but I so loathe this production of Company that it was a real treat to see an upset. I'm disappointed at the sweep for Spring Awakening. Not that it didn't deserve some recognition but it seemed a bit like mob mentality after a while. Oh, well. I was pretty spot on for most of the nominations (though I didn't post any yesterday or Saturday). I was even correct with Miss Julie White. That brought another cheer. I do love that woman. And I LOVED her speech. It was fresh and funny and from the heart. Mr. Langella gave the best speech of the evening. He didn't thank anyone. He just spoke eloquently and didn't even take 90 seconds. It can be done!

Later.

I was in a snarky mood last night and I realized that I was just gonna bitch and moan with every SA win, so I opted out of the partay last night rather than be a total drag.

The broadcast also served as a reminder of what a wash-out the entire season has been, musical-wise (for me, anyway.)  I was never excited about Grey Gardens.  Leagally Blonde and Mary Poppins never lived up to their promise.  Curtains is just about the only show I would like to see, but the "Show People" number was drably presented last night.  The most interesting thing last night were the clips from The Coast of Utopia--I didn't realize there was such stage imagry in that play.

I was also incredibly happy with David Hyde Pierce's win.

Monday morning greetings!  DH Richard has an early physical therapy appointment and DS Rob just left for work and I'm home.  That doesn't happen very often.

Here is an article from yesterday's Cincinnati Enquirer about the music teacher of whom DR Elmore speaks so fondly

Helen Weinberger

DR Elmore - would you like me to send you the paper copy?

Does anyone know if Duncan Sheik plays in the orchestra for his show every performance?  Is there a precendent for that?

I don't think he does. When I was there and he was playing, the girl next to me who had seen it something like 42 times said he sits in sometimes

TOD:

CITIZEN KANE
HARVEY
AN UNMARRIED WOMAN
MANHATTAN
BEING THERE
CASABLANCA
LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT
CARRIE
SPARTACUS

Odd, but I can't think of any great endings to a musical--most seem anticlimactic.  The best I can come up with is WEST SIDE STORY at the mo'...

I agree. That number was so much better on the stage in the theatre. I've seen the show and it didn't make me want to run out to see it again.

Whew!  Well the Tony Awards are over for another season.

I enjoyed the show.  I, too, feel that SPRING AWAKENING is certainly NOT the first ROCK or REVOLUTIONARY show on Broadway.  I think it will become a period piece very quickly....and look rather strange with that decade's clothes and this decade's music.  But then teen angst, as I have said before, is one of my LEAST favorite subjects.

LOL RLP.....Ms Petrov couldn't do an impression of Ms Hayes....not without a composer, a choreographer, and a director.

And I am still of put off by the casting of Audra as John Cullum's daughter....but maybe it works in the theater.

Would like to have seen LITTLE RED HAT, but then Audra wouldn't have sung.

I didn't mind seeing Audra as Lizzy to John Cullum's dad, but I jsut didn't like the jokey-ness between them.  Do they do that in the show?  "Old Maid" would have been a much better number, but I guess someone felt it might upstage Fantasia's big angst number.

Some already mentioned and:

GONE WITH WIND - Vivien Leigh's voiceover and her determination.....

ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN - "She finally got Harry all to herself."  And a great Ronald Stein music sting.

HAIR - for a lot of the same reasons as OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR

HARLOW - because after two hours of Carroll NOT being Harlow, we finally got the words THE END and the Paramount mountain.
