Title: A TALE OF THE ALLERGIES' LIFE
Post by: bk on November 06, 2003, 01:00:06 AM
All right, you've read the notes, now it's time to post until the cows come home.   Let's have fun today, dear readers.  Let's let our hair down and behave with great elan.  Let's glitter and be gay and have so much merriment and mirth and laughter and legs that are teeth ache.

It's almost like cheating being able to have first posts (or near) so easily from this time zone.
TV series "The Jewel in the Crown" - beautiful on so many levels.
Movie: I guess the LOTR  trilogy is not allowed. First thought is thus to go with "Dr Zhivago" because although it is not my favourite (favorite) movie, I don't think it would be destroyed by too many viewings.
CD. the John McGlinn complete "Showboat" which to my mind is one of the greatest recording of the twentieth century.

Whoops! Supposed to be a book and not a movie. For me it would be "Cloud Street" by Tim Winton. Once again, a choice that satisfies on a few levels - the story, the landscape depicted, the mythology alluded to and the writing itself. A major piece of work that should be more widely known.

Today’s topic of discussion: If you were on a desert island and you had to choose one movie, one book, one CD (no homemade compilations allowed) and one television series that you could have with you, what would your choices be?

Movie: Casablanca
TV Series: Law and Order
Book: Lord of the Rings (All the books in one volume)
CD:  a Capitol records Compilation of Johnny Mercer (This was a hard choice)

These were my "serious choices"

Here are my humorous choices:

Movie: Castaway (Tom Hanks)
TV Series: Gilligan's Island
Book: Robinson Crusoe
CD: The Best of Marcel Marceau

Yes, I would have to agree with Tom that Show Boat recording by John McGlinn is one of the great recordings. It was nominated for a Grammy Award and was a very interesting category that year; perhaps one of the toughest years ever.

Into the Woods - Stephen Sondheim, music and lyrics winner
Anything Goes - Cole Porter, composer and lyricist
Chess - Benny Anderson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, composers; Tim Rice, lyricist
Of Thee I Sing/Let 'Em Eat Cake George Gershwin, Ira Gershwin
Show Boat - Jerome Kern, composer; Oscar Hammerstein, lyricist

Three classic scores by great composers/lyricists
Two new scores.

I really wish I knew how the voters vote in this category. As much as I liked Sondheim and Into the Woods I would have voted (If I could) for Show Boat for the quality of the work and what it was attempting to do.

So if anyone knows. What do the Grammy voters take into consideration?

The music and the lyrics of a new recording (Do they ignore them if it’s a "revival" or "studio" version?)
The singers?
The Production Value (i.e. the sound of the recording, mixing etc)

One knows what they look for in other fields but this seems to be an enigma to me. I think they should have more categories in this field. Musicals are such uniquely an American art form they deserve more recognition

Best Original Cast Album (The first time a score has been recorded since the Grammy Awards have started) Award to composer and Producer
Best Revival Cast Album Award to the Producer
Best Compilation Musical Album; A category so recordings like Lost in Boston can have one.
Musical Song of the Year: The most other fields seems to have one
Male Singer
Female Singer
Company
Arrangements with and without vocals
Orchestrations with and without vocals

Lots of wonderful posts from yesterday!  Congratulatons DR Ann on your accomplishment.  ;D
I didn't like ONE MORE KISS as much as the other volumes, but as I wrote, I think it's because I had just read EVERYTHING   WAS POSSIBLE.   :-X

Full of allergies AND inundated with footage.  Hopefully the actifed will kick in with great vigor!  :o

What a wonderful QAD.  Hmmmmmmmmmmm:

Book:  Atlas Shrugged
Movie:  His Girl Friday
CD:  Carl Orff Carmina Burana
TV Series: I Love Lucy

All very difficult choices....whew!

TO  DR. TCB:

In a late posting yesterday (At least late for me) you said:

Jennifer:  I saw Pyramid today, too.  I think history may have been made when Donny Osmond and Bruce Vilanch hugged on national TV.  Not since  Madonna and Britney.............

I believe Bruce and Donny are old friends. Bruce, I believe wrote for The Donny and Marie variety series. BK appeared on the show and perhaps can verify this.

Good Morning--I'm typing quick--gotta go to work--

Congrats on the Weight loss (but I think I found it for you if you want it back) Jane!  :D

Thanks for the Congrats, George.  Well nothing is 100% sure until you have it in your hand or paycheck as it where but I think there is a very good chance it will be approved.   :)

I like todays question but will have to think about some of my answers.

Some come easy to the lips/fingers:

Book:  Dune by Frank Herbert

TV show:  Babylon 5

I shall have to consider the rest but it will give me something to think about on the bus ride to and from work!

Have a good day all!

Here is your Allison Hayes picture of the day:

From the 1958 Canadian production Wolf Dog.

Co-star was Jim Davis later of tv's Dallas.

You can't tell it from the photo, but the story concerned a young boy who adopts a wolf-dog after his first dog is killed.

Allison did more for a cotton blouse & cardigan sweater than many other actresses of the time.  This was a family film.  ;D

I think I might need karma sent today. It's been quite a week and it's not ending anytime soon. The company I work for has 4 back to back multi-day special events being hosted here and I am in the weeds. Not in a bed of roses, mind you - but the weeds my friends. I will probably not have a day off in over 2 weeks when this is over and I am working easily 16 hour days. Oh yes.. Karma is definitely needed.. Karma or heroine.. but I think I prefer the Karma ;)

Hope all is well with you H&K's...  Things are definitely a-brewin' here at HHW.

More later if I can snag a few minutes back at my desk...

I will be errant and truant (and truant and errant) most of the day. My company is sponsoring a very small display of the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt at the office today. I volunteered for the organization for 10 years and the powers that be have asked me to be available with the panels to answer questions and make sure everything goes smoothly so I won't be around my computer much.

Here is the NAMES Project Web site if anyone is interested in seeing Quilt Panels on line.

http://www.aidsquilt.org/ (http://www.aidsquilt.org/)

That being said, I wanted to answer at least part of today's question.

The television show is easy for me.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show

The other questions are more difficult.

Book, perhaps

Cider House Rules by John Irving. I read this book about 15 years ago and it's still with me. I remember riding through the countryside of France in the Deux Cheveaux and crying as I read certain passages. What a moving and wonderful book.

CD is probably the hardest since my favorite CD can change from week to week. I'm going to cheat a little and list two (so sue me, sue me, what can you do me - Thank you Mr. Frank Loesser)

A Wrinkle in Swingtime-Elena Bennett and Fred Barton do a take on Swing music. Great CD.

OCR of Candide. There are so many show CDs to choose from but Make Our Garden Grow is such a glorious number, if I had to have one CD, today I would choose that one.

Movie

I may have to come back to this one. I'm thinking West Side Story because it's one of the first big movie musicals I saw and I fell in love with it (and Eliot Feld - my first crush). Also Singin' in the Rain and The Bandwagon (you KNOW I mean the Fred Astaire version, not the recent release of something by the same name which is not remotely musical) and some others. When I get back to the 'puter I will try to narrow it down.

Bye for now.

As I read the book part I realized, all H&Ks know I wasn't driving as I was reading the book and crying, right??? At least in France they drive on the American side of the road, unlike England and Ireland (I LOVE YOU ENGLAND AND IRELAND, I REALLY DO). That took a lot of getting used to.

BTW, (I said I wouldn't be here much but I'm posting my little heart out until I go to the Quilt), for me loading of screens changes from day to day. It depends on many things. Sometimes it is slow, even on a T1 line (nerd alert) and other times, like this morning, it's fast and easy and makes me wish I had broadband at home. But that would mean a possible provider being the EVIL AND HATEFUL TIME WARNER CABLE. Oh, no, ladies and gentlemen, I will not line the pockets of an insufferable, incompetent multi-national corporation any more than I am now. I am in the midst of long-standing problems with this alleged cable provider (too long a story and too anger-inducing for me to go into details) and they have become the utility I love to, hate is such a strong word, so I'll just say DISLIKE INTENSELY.

Danise, thanks but the congrats go to Ann.

Tom from Oz, I have never heard of “Cloud Street”.  I will have to check it out.

It’s too early for me to choose ONLY ONE of each.  I have awake since three this morning.  I will say I have seen Casablanca more than any other movie and it is high on my list.  On the other hand, if I could only have one movie, maybe it should be a comedy. If stranded on an island I would need to keep my sense of humor.  For the moment I will choose “Walk Don’t Run”.  I might choose a Dickens book, a thick one like “David Copperfield”.  I think the CD would be Heifetz performing Brocks “Scottish Fantasy”, that or Best of Billy Joel.  I can dance to his music.  A possible pick for a TV show is “The Dick Van Dyke Show”.  I’ll see if I come up with better choices, or simply change my mind, by the end of the day.

One small correction from yesterday: Bruce Vilanch is indeed playing Edna Turnblad in HAIRPSRAY but in the national company. Harvey is still playing it on Broadway.

It is VERY hard to choose one for each of these areas:

TV series - CSI
book: Probably Kurt Ganzl's MUSICAL THEATRE ON RECORD
movie: EVIL UNDER THE SUN
CD: FOLLIES - the Goodspeed cast since it's the complete show with cut songs and variations of songs.

Hi Jane!  I usually keep HHW running in the background and then when I check the posts, I refresh and the new ones come up. Don't know if that is viable for you.

For all HHW - here is a midi version of EDGAR ALLAN POE from Snoopy!!!
If you have done the show, sing along!  ;D

Very interesting DR Lulu!  I gave you Karma for that!  Did you notice that Franny's show is in COLOR!!!  A friend of mine once went on and he was wearing a very green jacket - she happened to be wearing her RED dress and said good naturedly to him off camera:  "Don't sit too close to me - we'll look like a god-dam Christmas tree!"

My guess would be that Coffee With Carter would have been hosted by Bob Carter AKA Sammy Terry - although from 9 am to 12 noon is a LOT of coffee!

What an amazing benefit that was last night.  For me, Libby Skala was the knockout, with her scene from Lilia, now playing at Where Eagles Dare.  But of course I think Hillary Chaplain has completely redefinied an art form we all take for granted: clowning.  The glorious voice of Carol Fox Prescott: I've never seen anyone sing with such emotion and joy.  And Joy!  She knocked them dead with Colon Closed Parentheses and How Could They Have Missed?

(I'm very busy working on the CD of Our Wedding - The Musical, coming soon to http://www.weddingmusical.com (http://www.weddingmusical.com))

We weren't the only singing couple: the dean of improv teachers, Gary Austin, did some funny songs, as did his guitarist.  His wife, Wenndy MacKenzie, has a lustrous voice (which is why she's on all your favorite rock albums) and puts on quite a show.  Linda Amiel Burns did a funny Ring Them Bells, and my co-host, Larry Rosen, did a great bit of frenetic jazz.

Sorry for anyone who missed it, but, hey, you'd been warned.

Spot on, Jrand!  Bob Carter hosted "Coffee with Carter" for three hours, five days a week.  Then he also hosted a kiddie show in the afternoon...17 1/2 hours of nonstop gab per week!  But then, are we really surprised?  Look at how he could bend the ol' ear as Sammy Terry.  Not that I'm complaining...love him!

Thanks for the Karma.    :)

In answer to your question about Grammy voters DR MDS, I suspect many were unfamiliar with the extravagance of McGlinn's SHOWBOAT. They saw that it was a studio cast recording competing with Sondheim's newest score and opted for the new score over the old one.

For me, it would have been hard to pick one. I take nothing away from the magnificent production of SHOW BOAT on that set, but new music and lyrics of such quality also deserve recognition. I guess you knew that for the cast albums, the composer/lyricist only wins a Grammy if the score is in its first recording. When FOLLIES IN CONCERT won for show album, Sondheim did not win a Grammy. He didn't win a Grammy for the original FOLLIES either. That album lost to GODSPELL's original cast album.

Well, well, well (that is three wells) - Lulu's back in town.  Welcome to our new world.

Yes, Vilanch wrote for Donny and Marie and I've known him since way back then.

Grammy voters: In the show album category they vote for what they've heard of - plain and simple.  Most of them don't listen to the albums at all.  They "heard" of Smokey Joe's because the show was visible and the producer of the album was a legendary rock producer.  They "heard" of Riverdance (remember, that had one of the hugest publicity campaigns ever, plus the PBS showings) so it won over Rent.  In the case of Showboat - they "heard" of Into the Woods because that year it was very visible and Sondheim's name has always been in the press, even though most of his shows aren't hits.  He was the darling that year.  The voters probably had no idea what Showboat was/is and believe me, they didn't listen to a 3 CD set.

Pretty amazing at look at the show albums that didn't win the Grammy for Best Cast Recording:

HELLO, DOLLY didn't win (but Jerry Herman won for the title song as Best Song).

A CHORUS LINE lost to THE WIZ.

DON'T BOTHER ME, I CAN'T COPE beat GREASE, SUGAR, and TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA.

A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC won and then TWO years later, "Send in the Clowns" won as Best Song.

NO STRINGS beat FORUM, OLIVER, and STOP THE WORLD.

Book - Dante's Divine Comedy (three books in one volume)
Movie - The Sound of Music
CD - Hairspray cast recording (I can think of other things I'd like to bring, but this one always puts a smile on my face, and on a desert island I think I would need it!)
TV series - ER

I just accepted a new job at my former employer.  (I guess the good thing about being laid off at a young age is you are easily placed elsewhere.)  I think negotiating for the salary was the most nerve-wracking thing I have ever done in my life.  But, I am relieved to have a source of income again.  Phew!

Good morning everyone!

Remember that book review I pull out of my... er... bum a couple of weeks ago?  I got it back and it is BY FAR the weirdest marking scheme I have ever seen for a paper.  There was only one comment on the entire thing (the marker underlined and checked when I called Newfoundland's post-Britain pre-Confederation the "lost years" - I think he like that) and then a mark (B+) at the end.  Other people in the class were just as confused by the lack of feedback.  I want to know why I got the mark I did!!!  I mean, it can't be entirely because of the "lost years"... that wasn't even that great of an argument/section.  Heck it wasn't even an argument or section at all!  It was a mere glancing mention.  Did the marker even READ my paper?!?  argh.

BK: was I the only one who noticed how in your notes Mr. Mark Bakalor is now Br. Mark Bakalor? Did Mark become a monk?  Cuz that would be very cool... ;)

Craig: IS IT YOUR BITHDAY TODAY AND YOU HAVEN'T TOLD ANYBODY?!?  I WOULD BE VEEEEERRRRYYY UPSET WITH YOU FOR THIS ATTEMPT AT SHYNESS IF IT IS!!   [/glow]

Even if it isn't you're birthday, just breathe through the work and think of all the delicious money you will be making.  :)

My Desert Island Pleasures:

CD: "The Last Five Years" OOBC.  I know it's controversial to mention JRB at this here site but I LOVE this cd soooooo much.

Book: Hmmm... too hard to pick

Movie: "Empire of the Sun" - I have seen this WAY to many times to count!

I'll check in later!
Good morning everyone!

As for the delicious money I will be making.... I am on salary.. so while I am thankful for the job and salary I do have.. sadly, these extra OOOMPHS at work do not warrant a bumper crop of green...

DR Matt H & Mr BK - your discussion along with WEL's - inspired me.  I think I will check out the Tony Winners and nominees for different years....play the scores I have, and see what I think.

And DR Matt - although it is VERY close, I think I might have to go with NO STRINGS...although a comparison listen might make me lean toward FORUM or OLIVER.

Mr BK - when folks vote for the Grammy for Best Cast Album, are they admonished to also consider the technical aspects?  Because the 1964 OBC of HELLO, DOLLY is pretty sloppily records IMHO.

BK--what a cool topic of the day, if a very hard one!  After some thought I have come up with the following selections--

book--The Portable Dorothy Parker, because that will keep me laughing when the coconuts and fish have run out.

CD--Gypsy OCR; the natives living on the closest island will be able to hear Ethel singing!  ;D

Movie--Let's go with Singin' in the Rain.  I NEVER get tired of it.

TV--DVD's of Sex and the City!

LC--congrats on the new job, sweetie!   ;D  Is it okay to give us more details??

Lulu--Welcome back...you've been missed!

Emily--I noticed the Br. Mark thing too!  Well, he does have an angel's face :P

Craig--our birthdays are 6 days away...mine is on the 29th!

Well, my NYC trip is approaching...I will be there from the 27th to the 30th I think.  Will anyone be in town to have lunch with yours truly???

DR JRand, I'm sure you mean Grammys for these shows since that's what we're discussing.

I really don't care much for NO STRINGS. Other than "The Sweetest Sounds," I find the rest of the score sort of bland. (Perhaps I need to re-listen. It's been a long time.)  OLIVER would have gotten my vote hands down.

Excellent choice, Matt H.!  I would bring chocolate too, and I wouldn't feel guilty eating it either, because when I got fat from all the Godiva and Ghirardelli overload, nobody would be able to tell!

Late-breaking news: I am eating a bagel and viewing tapes.

More late-breaking news: My allergy attack last night (one of the worst I've ever had) has resulted in a sore throat and a general feeling of malaise, oh, yes, a general feeling of malaise.

Craig - sorry for the misunderstanding.  Happy Birthday WAAAAYYY in advance!  Jason should be ashamed of himself.  I mean, it's not there are any other big event happening around the 23rd of December! ;)

BK - I think that the logical thing to bring with me to a dessert island would be a spoon.  Why bring your own sweets to one where godiva, profiteroles, etc. surely grow on trees?  :)

I think that if the name were actually misleading and it was BYOD (bring your own dessert) then I'd definitely go for a French pastry known as a "mille feuilles" or thousand leaves.  Chcoloate, almond paste, puff pastry and custard.  You can also get it with all whipped cream instead of custard or moitié-moité (half custard half cream) but I am a purist and must insist on whole custard.

Strangely enough, custard in Quebec is known as "crème Boston" popularly, or Boston Cream.  I always thought that was interesting... why is custard associated with Boston?  hmmm....

(Those of you who have read Ted Chapin's book on FOLLIES will already know this, and those of you who haven't - what are you waiting for?   It is to non-fiction what the Kritzer Trilogy is to fiction - something that can't be missed.)

The producer of the OBC of FOLLIES fought with Capitol Records to allow them to do a two-LP set but was forced to fit as much as he could of the score onto one LP.  It also had to be recorded in one day (as most OBC albums are) but some numbers were eliminated entirely and just about everything that made the final cut was edited from the stage version, so the cast was performing different versions of the material they recorded on-stage.  That said, the recording captures the great original performances, and is better performed than any other FOLLIES recording even though the others are much more complete.

Added note: TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA which beat FOLLIES for the Best Musical Tony that year was allowed to record the entire score on 2 LPs.

And speaking of Great Performances, in December shortly after the Broadway revisal of WONDERFUL TOWN opens, this series will present a London Concert version of the show (available for years on CD) with Kim Criswell as Ruth, Audra McDonald as Eileen, Thomas Hampton as Bob and --- of special interest to readers of this here site --- Brent Barrett as Wreck.

I would bring a fork to Dessert Island, of course.

So remember that Power Point thing that had me all worked up yesterday? I threw one together yesterday afternoon that didn't have all the bells and whistles that it was supposed to, and then stayed up most of the night writing my essay for English class. When I got to Computers today, the very forgetful teacher said that for extra credit, we could get up in front of the class and present our Power Points. Ordinarily, I would have said, No way, Jose" but I sorta need the extra credit, and I was so tired from writing that essay that I didn't know what I was doing anyway. So I volunteered to go second and presented my fencing school thingie. I didn't have anything prepared, so I just made it up as I went along and even acted out some of it. It was so funny and everybody laughed and then applauded at the end.  ;D

Now if it were a dessert island that would be easy.  Take lots and lots of Dream Whip.  But now that we are back to the cold reality of life, it is once again a desert island.

TV Series:  The Simpsons.  I can watch them over and over again and they are still funny.  Plus, there are a lot of episodes, so I wouldn’t get too bored.

CD:  Judy Garland; Live at Carnegie Hall  When she was bad, she stunk; but when she was really on, like on this recording, she literally soared.

Movie:  Close Encounters of the Third Kind  It never fails to move me.

Book:  The Holy Bible  Sorry, but I am just being honest.

-----------------------------------
Thank you Matt H. for correcting my error from yesterday.

Mr. Lurie, you have made my day, my week, and my year.  I will program the VCR for December tonight.

The world today is a little less righteous...Righteous Brother Bobby Hatfield has passed away.

Boy, tough question, Bruce.

Film would be THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD
TV series:  either I, CLAUDIUS or SOUTH PARK
Book:  SHE by Rider Haggard
CD:  Probably my two CD-set of Miklos Rozsa...or my boxed set of Doo Wop...or my two CD Johnny Hartman. DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE!

DR WEL - what great news!  Is it the character Wreck that sings the football song?  What great December Programming.  Of course - unless I can get it on the satellite, we won't get it until February in Indiana....and is it during a Pledge Week?  If so, I won't watch at all, I will wait for the DVD.

Mr BK what was malaise's general opinion of being felt?

TCB - you made me change my mind.  Judy at Carnegie Hall!  Do you have the Judy at Home at the Palace recorded in 1967?  It's not nearly as good, but it's Judy LIVE AND IN PERSON!

Flash for DR TCB - do what I did - go to Ebay and search under Audiotronics!  There you will find a nice selection of the Phonographs that used to be used by the Audio-Visual departments of schools.  They are priced anywhere from $10 to $45 - read the descriptions and make sure the one you are bidding on has a needle!  But for about $50 including shipping, you can have your round black vinyl things spinning again!

Oh...it might be easier just to buy a car with an 8-track player than finding the player itself.  I recommend a 1977 Mercury Monterey.

Per Ken Mandelbaum's column of yesterday, the date for the PBS WONDERFUL TOWN is Monday, December 22 but I assume that is the NYC date.  Not all PBS stations show these on the same day.  However I don't think that this will be during a begathon since Christmas week is not the usual time for doing so.

And yes Wreck --- the character Brent plays --- has the song "Pass That Football".

On an isalnd with me would be:
CD: Nancy LaMott - My Foolish Heart  (and that was a very tough decision to make).
TV SHOW: The Julie Andrews Hour
MOVIE: this one was tougher than the cd, but, in all honesty, I'd have to go for something in which I could find something *new* with each viewing, so, after considering THE SOUND OF MUSIC, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA  and THE HAUNTING, I've decided that THE WICKER MAN   would be the most remarkable way to start or end the desert island day.
BOOK:  How to Survive on a Desert Island.  Just kidding.
Notre Dame de Paris par Victor Hugo.

By the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), I entered the last series of corrections into the book, I've smoothed out the last of the things I wasn't so thrilled with, and after I run those things by my friend and muse Margaret, I shall be done and the book can go off to the publisher.  That is, if Mr. Craig Brockman will get off his ample butt cheeks and do the work he told me he would do (if all goes according to plan, we have a really cool surprise for the book).

Unpleasant Business Allert:

I am sorry to report that the worst possible thing seems to have happened.  Yesterday, the jury came in with their verdict on all three counts, and it was the title of a Doonsbury book referencing Nixon.  It was bad.

I am stunned, Joe is stunned, our attorney is in a state of shock, and we are talking about an appeal.

Meanwhile, I am back at work and trying to catch up on all your lovely posts--I'm up to October 25.

I want to thank all the well-wishers for the wells they wished us, and the huge amount of good vibes received.  It is good to have friends at a time like this.

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to let you all know that the new Broadway Radio Show will be up and ready for listening this Sunday.  Unfortunately, it will be up for more than a week, since I will be off to NYC for a few days and won't have a chance to get a new one recorded before I leave.  However, when I return, we will have a brand new show with our beloved Davdi Levy as we listen to more cover versions of great showtunes (David already sent me the CD and it's hysterical and very scary!)......in addition, while in NYC, I will be getting together with the gorgeous Kerry Butler and the stunning Susan Egan for some radio interview fun (it'll be a Battle of the Belles!).  BK is also trying to arrange for some more interviews while I am there; so, we'll have lots of fun shows coming up.

Oh, and keep an eye out for our 100th Broadway Radio Show coming VERY soon (the new one this weekend is actually show #91)!!!!

Come on now one and all!  Think vibey thoughts!  If you let your vibeing vibe stop vibrating for even a short while the quality of the vibes lessens dramatically!

Dear Donald:

Your photo is scaring me.

Dear Craig:

I do not like bees or flies or bugs of any kind so I always use vinegar.  There is a method to my madness and a madness to my method.

Meanwhile, in late-breaking news, I feel like a cow patty right now.

Dear William F. Orr:

I am sorry the jury did what they did.  But, that is the legal system for you.  It's one of the  reasons I walked away from my case - I felt and will always feel that I was in the right, but I wasn't willing to chance the vagaries of a jury trial, especially with people who have great wealth.  But, you must stand tall you take whatever little comfort you can from the fact that your trial-mates will rot in hell, karma-wise.  They will, at some point, get what they deserve, as all these people do.

No I haven't seen it yet.  In an interesting coincidence I have tickets for two days before the broadcast.

I did see this production at Encores but only two of the cast from that production remain.  And it was one of the least cut books from an Encores show they have ever done.

Years ago a theatre where I had previously worked did WONDERFUL TOWN with Phyllis Diller.  I went opening night and then a week later.  Opening night Ms. Diller was terrified and it showed, but a week later she was great.  This was where she met her 2nd husband (Warde Donovan) who played Bob opposite her Ruth.

As intriguing and exciting as that WONDERFUL TOWN will be to see, I wish someone would get the rights clearances and package the CBS Rosalind Russell WONDERFUL TOWN from 1958. I watched it at the Museum of Television and Radio several years ago, and it was wonderful. And while they're clearing those rights, how about Julie Andrews' CINDERELLA and JULIE AND CAROL AT CARNEGIE HALL. The CDs of those shows are great, but to see them AND hear them would be SUPREME!

Oh, wow, WEL--I had no idea that Phyllis Diller had ever done a musical!  Jay pretty much captured my reaction!

I guess I have a fond spot in my heart for Wonderful Town, because while I was never in a production of it, I was in a recital at a theatre camp I went to about 5 years ago and I got to sing part of Christopher Street.  The camp had a huge costume dept., I remember, and I scoured through it for hours until I found the most outré costume imaginible.  I ended up looking like a cross between a clown and Norma Desmond!

Donald, I think your picture is very sexy. However, I do have to admit for a split second, I thought it was Tony Randall playing Pan in THE SEVEN FACES OF DR. LAO.

So very sorry, WFO, about your news. I'll be thinking good thoughts for an appeal.

If I'm going to be on a desert island, whatever book, TV series, CD and movie better be something that bears repeated viewings/readings/hearings.  I would choose:
Book:  James Michner's "The Source"
CD: Barbra Streisand, The Second Album
TV series: The Dick Van Dyke Show
Movie:  Citizen Kane

Oh my - I saw Miss Phyllis Diller do Hello, Dolly! in Chicago and she made the role her own.  The audience was in hysterics at her interpretation - but her quiet moments were very touching, more ironic than I had seen them played.  Singing was not bad, not GREAT, but certainly more than adequate.

She also at times would appear with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra - Phyllis is an accomplished concert pianist.

If you ever have a chance to see her, go on and go!  She is still a lot of fun.  She does a date now and then at the Beef & Boards Theatre here in Indy, and I always go with me friend John who is the President of the International Phyllis Diller Fan Club!  ;D

Didn't Phyllis Diller do DOLLY in New York for a few months possibly after Pearl Bailey and before Ethel Merman? I could have sworn the order was: Channing, Ginger Rogers, Martha Raye, Betty Grable, Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller, Ethel Merman. (Of course, Bibi Osterwald spelled some of those ladies during vacations or illnesses, I think).

I also remember that David Merrick offered Jack Benny a king's ransom (queen's ransom) to play Dolly in drag for a few months, but he refused.

Sugar is a cutie.  Since she is part Border Collie I suggest you think about agility classes.  Echo and I had fun in agility until the class time moved to 9:30-much too late for me.

Kerry, I will be looking for the answer to your question.  My cartoon of a little Bernese Mountain do is a bit blurry.  Better than the cartoon would be a baby picture of Echo.

Late-breaking news: I just got a look at myself in the mirror and I look like I'm 108 years old.  This is because I only slept two hours last night.  Had I slept three hours I would only look 90.

I saw Miss Phyllis Diller in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway and she was faboo in every way.  I've told the story here before so search for it - she had a mishap on her entrance and turned it into one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

I do believe we have crossed the Rubik's Cube with this post - I do believe that in the Daily Discussions we have just passed post number 3,000.  Hoo and ray.

He should have made the offer to Milton Berle.

Or, maybe, Ernest Borgnine?

Yes, I second the comments from Jrand regarding Phyllis Diller.  She was a very gifted pianist, and friends I knew that saw her do Dolly said she was wonderful.  I know when I met her years ago, she was an absolute delight.

WFO:  Perhaps those of us here at HHW didn't send strong enough vibes to you and Joe.  If so, I think it was because we were all sure that justice would triumph.  I am just shocked.  I feel so bad for both of you.  When my mother was killed, my sister and I were talked into letting the prosecutors accept a guilty plea on a lesser charge of manslaughter, rather than risk a jury trial, because as the King County prosecutor told us, "You can never count on a jury to be fair."  (This is the same prosecutor who yesterday accepted the plea bargin in Seattle from the worst serial killer in U.S. history.)

Good evening all!

My most humble apologies to both Jane and Ann!  That’s what comes of trying to rush a post in the early morning!

After some though my choices for CD would be: Michael Crawford–the Live CD.

Movie: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The one thing I would bring to Dessert Island is a spoon!  And if I had to, I’d bring the apple turn overs.  Can you believe I turned down a piece of cake and ice cream today–as in said, “No, thank you!”  Is that a sign that I am serious about losing a few pounds?  Pray that it is so!

BK, sorry to hear your not feeling well.  If your nose runs, do your feet smell?  Don’t you hate it when that happens!

William F. Orr–I’m sorry but I’m not up to speed on that.  I’m sorry things didn’t turn out for you in court.  Whatever it was/is there is always the chance of an appeal, hopefully?

Thank you, Karma fairy!

I am tired tonight.  I’m sooo looking forward to my nice 4 day weekend.  I might go see “Starlight Express”.  I’ve heard some of the music but never seen the show.  Something to look forward to!

The order of the Dollys on Broadway were

Carol Channing (Jan 16, 1964-Aug 7. 1965)
Ginger Rogers (Aug 9, 1965-Feb 25, 1967)
Martha Raye (Feb 27, 1967 - June 10, 1967)
Betty Grable ( Jun 12, 1967-Nov 5, 1967)
Bibi Osterwald (Nov 6, 1967-Nov 11, 1967)
Pearl Bailey (Nov 12, 1967 - December 24, 1967?)
Phyllis Diller Dec 26, 1969 - Mar 26, 1970)
Ethel Merman (Mar 28, 1970-Dec 27, 1970)

Then there were the Standbys:
Jo Anne Worley,
Bibi Osterwald (who went on a lot for Ginger Rogers and played it for a week before Bailey),
Thelma Carpenter (She went on for Bailey more than 100 times and eventually did Wednesday matinees and played the role when Miss Bailey left)
Marie Bryant (who I have never heard of).

From what I understand Carol Channing and Ethel Merman never missed a performance. Not sure about Miss Raye, Grable or Diller. Mr. Herman does not have nice things to say about Miss Raye.

Dollys on Tour

Dorothy Lamour
Eve Arden
Mary Martin
Carol Channing

London

Mary Martin 12/65
Dora Bryant 5/66

Film:
Barbra Streisand

Methinks BK may have the dreaded flu.

I got two of my first three NetFlix movies today, so I can't write much as I have lots to watch, but I wanted to check in and say hi.

I hope Dear Diva Donna is feeling better this weekend...I'm supposed to see her on Sunday, and unfortunately I'm missing TABOO on Sat. night because of the Met. Oh, well...I need the money. I'm seeing WICKED tomorrow night and NEVER GONNA DANCE on Sat. afternoon. I'm quite excited! :)

Does anyone here have a solo recording of Mama Cass? Something made me think of her today and I was wondering if anyone had it...?

Book: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay...or perhaps a David Sedaris book for laughs.

CD: The Phantom of the Opera

Movie: 9 to 5. It always makes me laugh.

You are correct, mon ami!
I thought that we were allowed an entire series, though, which is why I chose Julie's brief hour-long variety series (as well as alotting me the opportunity to see her fab guest stars - - like Mr. Kelly, Maria von Trapp, et al - I would still get to hear her sing the songs she did on stage and film).

I am taking tomorrow off  I am nearly totally thrilled about it.

Don't ask me why.  No, I'm not up to 'splainin' it.  But I'm gonna have a good time, I just feel it.

It's supposed to rain buckets tomorrow...and I've got firelogs and unread books and the makin's for some Irish coffee and/or daiquiris.  Yep!  I'd love another daiquiri...maybe a lime daiquiri this time.

Time to go home now, though.  Time to think about dinner and what I want to sup on tonight.  I had a nice chicken piccata with rice and veggies for lunch.  But I want something just as nice tonight...I do.  Maybe some poke chops.

That's the Li'l Abner in me...I love my poke chops!

And it's been forever since I had some grits.  Maybe I'll have grits in the morning with my coffee and some bacon.  I can almost taste those grits right now, all buttered and seasoned with salt and pepper.

Sartorial splendor check: I'm wearing a burgundy broadcloth shirt with charcoal Italian trousers and black dress shoes.  My socks are black.  My skivvies are CK grey.

I LOVED THE JULIE ANDREWS HOUR, her weekly series that only lasted one season. They (ABC) gave it impossible time periods, but she had some wonderful shows during that one season. I'll never forget her version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" on her Disney-themed show, the best rendition of that song I've ever heard, and she took the high note at the end of it, something even the great Barbara Cook didn't attempt on her THE DISNEY ALBUM.

That was her only Emmy surprisingly. She didn't win for any of her specials with Carol Burnett (though the show and Carol won the first go-round), nor did her fabulous 1965 special with Gene Kelly win the big prize for her. Unfair but true.

I'm sure that Lane and Broderick's 112 performances (or something like that) will sell out, but once they leave in April, the problem will still be with the producers of THE PRODUCERS: who do you get to follow these two who can bring in the patrons to sellout levels? For the show to sell out, it needs stars, something that shows like THE LION KING and MAMMA MIA have not relied upon.

I'm so not feeling well, although I'm doing a bit better than at work - my chills have abated somewhat.  I got a really early copy of the new Alien box set today - it's nine discs and is pretty amazing.  I'm slogging slowly through the extras first.  Also got an early copy of the SE of The Two Towers.

I was sure I posted this afternoon, but I can't find it. I must have been nuked.

Only if you posted after 5:30, although I don't remember seeing one of your posts.

Hopefully, the propagating is proceeding apace.

Today’s topic of discussion: If you were on a desert island and you had to choose one movie, one book, one CD (no homemade compilations allowed) and one television series that you could have with you, what would your choices be?

TV Series: "South Park." I started watching it in the middle of the first season and as much as I liked it, I just didn't watch it for very long, mainly because there was no other show that I watched that was around the same time of night that it was on (that was an unseemly sentence).  Recently I discovered several other shows that are on Comedy Central and have started watching "South Park" on a regular basis. I'd like to see the whole series from the beginning, even the episodes yet to be made, for as long as it's made. Or maybe "The Simpsons" because there are 13 years (so far) of episodes to watch and I like Groening's kind of humor, as well.

Movies: I can't choose just one:  “Singing In the Rain” and “The Muppet Movie.”  I love both of these movies.

CD:  I can't choose just one CD, either:  I would have to have the entire Stephen Sondheim oeuvre on as many CDs as it takes.

Book:  another cheat:  it would have to be a specially published 3-in-1 "Benjamin Kritzer Saga"... or you could call it "The Many Lives of Benjamin Krizter" or something like that.  Either that or the 5-volume "Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy" trilogy, which has been published in one volume...I think.

And a never-EVER-needs-servicing VCR/DVD/CD/TV player with an unlimited power source.  Otherwise, what would be the point of it all?   ;D

Again, I want to say how well we did today - we probably really had close to two hundred posts, but some were lost when we switched to the new server.  New notes are going up momentarily.  If you haven't propagated, fear not, just go as you always do to the notes and with one simple click you'll be whisked away to notesland.
