Well, you've read the notes, you are now with it and happening, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're off clipping their toenails by the clipped hedges.

And now, as promised, the How To Write A Dirty Book blurb - in fact, here's the blurb as featured on the back cover of the book.  If you remember the front cover, you'll know how cool this back cover is - again, the brilliance of Mr. Geissman shines forth.  Of course, the publisher logo and bar code will be added.

TOTD:

One case was in the early 80s in ND and it involved Gordon Kahl and his son and other members of Posse Comitatus having a shootout on I-94 near Medina, ND. I became very curious about militant protest groups and about the circumstances that lead to protesting in this manner.

Disclaimer.... The MOTW based on the incident does have a number of inaccuracies. One that really bugged me was Mountains in the scenery... There are NO mountains in ND!

Another incident is a more recent occurence here in ND and that is the kidnapping and murder of Dru Sjodin, a college student that attended teh University of North Dakota. THe alledged perpetrator of the crime, Alfonso Rodriguez, Jr., was just found guilty of the crimes last week. He is a repeat sex offender that was released just two months before Sjodin was kidnapped, from a Minnesota prison. THe penalty phase of his trail is coming up and the jury has to decide if he gets the death penalty or life imprisonment. Since the crime has federal charges he is eligible for the death penalty. Since then, I have been reading a lot on sex offenders and the crimes they perpetuate and the consequences on society.

Sadly, I have close hand experience with another case that happened in Idaho, when a man by the name of Joseph Duncan kidnapped two small children and killed their family. He lived in FArgo for a time and he been charged with molesting in Detroit Lakes but was let go on his own reconnaissance. He was a student at NDSU and came into the library quite often. He is one person that gave me a very uneasy feeling.

Forgetfully, yesterday's Topic of the Day:  "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum."  I LOVE the musical (I even played Hero in a community theater production) and growing up, my sister and I used to watch the movie on TV.  HOWEVER,  when I grew up and became a fan of Stephen Sondheim's and learned about the stage version, I have not been able to watch the movie.  It's a travesty.  I mean, granted, they did film Zero Mostel and Jack Gilford and several others from the original cast (I can appreciate it for that), but eviscerating the score was unconscionable (in my humble opinion).

Today's Topic of the Day:  I don't think I really "followed" any true crime event.  I did read some about the Matthew Shephard murder.  A few years ago, his mother Judy spoke in Seattle.  My ex-boyfriend and I went to see her speak.  She was very good...quite an emotional speech.

And now, I must go to sleep.  I have to get up early and will probably (I'd better) have some e-mails from the lenders that I got quotes on so that I can make a final decision on who to get money from to buy my condo!  (someone better give me money...otherwise, I'm screwed!) ;)

Good night, DakotaCelt.

Write like the wind!

Good morning, all!  I'm up quite early, since I have quite a bit to accomplish today.  I've been listening to the delightful "Bus & Truck" demo, and easing my way into the morning.

DR MattH, my very first guess on the killer's identity after seeing the crime scene on THE CLOSER proved to be right, but I enjoyed immensely the continuous tension clouding the issue and putting suspicion on several othersnormously.  The show has a great supporting cast.

I was consumed by the O J Simpson case: such a farce and travesty of justice.

True crime?  The only story I ever followed closely was back in high school, during my junior year, when a bunch of jocks stuffed the ballot box in order to throw the election of the student body president.  Hilarity ensued.

TOD

I think it would also have to be the OJ Simpson trial.

I believe that he did it, but there was so much reasonable doubt that the jury acquited him. Although people have been been found guilty on less.

When I think of OJ Simpson trial I think of some lyrics from Chicago

It's all a circus, kid. A three ring circus.
These trials- the wholeworld- all show business.
But kid, you're working with a star, the biggest!

(Singing)
Give 'em the old razzle dazzle
Razzle Dazzle 'em
Give 'em an act with lots of flash in it
And the reaction will be passionate
Give 'em the old hocus pocus
Bead and feather 'em
How can they see with sequins in their eyes?

What if your hinges all are rusting?
What if, in fact, you're just disgusting?

Razzle dazzle 'em
And they'll never catch wise!

AND

In fifty years or so
It's gonna change, you know
But, oh, it's heaven
Nowadays

(But it didn't)

I have returned from Long Island. I need to catch up but before I do, birthday greetings to those who have grown a year older in the past few days. And vibes to those who need them.

We bought a new monochrome laser printer while on the Island. We needed a new printer and this came well recommended and on sale. Because we bought the printer and a toner cartridge the nice young clerk also gave us a ream of paper. We carried the printer on the LI Railroad into Penn Station and on the subway. We climbed up the stairs at 14th Street, through the slam gate and along the blocks to our apartment. We will set up the printer tonight. I am looking forward to a spanking new printer. We had looked at color lasers and although the price has come down and I could have afforded to purchase one, we just didn't want an electronic device the size of a small refrigerator (I exaggerate but not by much) sitting on the cabinet in the bedroom. We have a color ink jet and we will just keep that for fancy things like cards and important CD inserts.

I must begin catching up and also I must get back to work.

In two weeks and a day Mr. Guest will be a guest in our fair city!

I agree with you, DR Elmore. The marvelous thing about THE CLOSER is that the audience was expertly misdirected by other events and characters. Agatha Christie was a genius at that kind of misdirection (the most obvious suspect being the guilty party but making it seem as though others had just as likely a reason to commit the crime), and having read almost all of her books, it usually doesn't fool me.

I usually go wrong from the get-go if I settle on the wrong person to start with the then start bending the evidence to support my theory.

Today, TCM is running five Mario Lanza films back-to-back. I got THAT MIDNIGHT KISS (his screen debut) at the end of July, but the others I'm looking forward to watching, and THE TOAST OF NEW ORLEANS I'm looking forward to burning onto a DVD-R.

I've never even seen THE SEVEN HILLS OF ROME or FOR THE FIRST TIME (his last film).

Note to HOUSE fans.

Fox is running HOUSE out of its normal time period for the first few weeks of the season so as to give the new show STANDOFF a good lead-in audience. So, if you want to see the season premiere, it's on at 8 p.m. tonight (EDT) instead of the usual 9 p.m.

Good morning!

The last stacking of the wood yesterday - the dessert, if you will: all the cedar, into its own long wood rick on the side of the shed, and covered. This is the stuff that, when you want to start the fire quickly, you bring a small piece down to the house and place it on your kindling. Whoosh - it lights! Then you put other types of wood on top.

I'm going to hate leaving here - I always do (unless it has been cold and rainy - then I can't wait to get outa here). But I am looking forward to coming adventures. The unloading of my packed-to-the-rafters car once I get to my nephew's motorhome in the Santa Cruz RV park will be quite the adventure! Then, move into the Playa Vista loft. Then on Sept. 20, we have the first reading of the revised Thighs with Kimmel songs. Then Cal State LA meeting, to see if I can find the shortest route to a BA in Music-Vocal Performance. And then, first weekend in Oct, I start the Masters Degree program at U of SM. And another year whizzes by...

True Crime - the long siege and fire-bombing and murder of so many adults and children at the Branch Davidian compound, and subsequent "investigation". Better get back to work. A "bat man" is meeting me at my house this afternoon to see if I have a real bat problem or if it was a fluke.  My problem is he kills the bats with sticky paper.  I don't like that idea.   I called another company that does bat proofing, but the woman who answered was extremely rude....excuse me for wanting to do business with you!!

I recently read about:

"QUITO, Ecuador (AP) -- Maria Esther de Capovilla, believed to be the world's oldest person, has died at 116, her granddaughter said.

Catherine Capovilla, 46, a property manager and real estate agent in Miami, said Capovilla died Sunday (Aug. 27, 2006) at 3 a.m. local time in a hospital in the coastal city of Guayaquil. She died two days after coming down with pneumonia. Her funeral was planned for Monday.

Born on September 14, 1889 -- the same year as Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler -- Capovilla was married in 1917 and widowed in 1949."

This woman was MY CURRENT AGE WHEN I WAS BORN!

I just wanted to share that with you all.  It has given me pause all weekend.....

Live feed spoilers below.

It's funny, but i love will. Janelle is my favorite, but i still love will. I don't know if i'm ready to see him go. Erika and boogie were making me want to hurl (with their showmance). And i was ready to see her go.  But now i'm not so sure.

I'm not sure if janelle could beat will in F2. I do think she could probably beat erika and boogie. Although it's hard to tell for sure who james and danielle would vote for.

But that said, i am sort of happy that the girls look like they may triumph over being played. I think if janelle boots will then it will make her look like a winner. But if he can convince her to save him this time, then he deserves to win.

Finally last night erika and janelle compared notes and realized they've been played. I think erika was sincere. But i'm still not 100% sure that she will make good on her promises. She swore on her mother that she would take janelle to the finals. And she also said that as soon as boogie bowed out of the endurance hoh comp, that erika would let janelle win.

It seemed real. But i'm just not sure. Because while erika knows that she was played a bit. She does not realize yet (i don't think) that boogie can't stand her.

What do you guys following the feeds think?
Title: Re:CLIPPED HEDGES
Post by: Ron Pulliam on September 05, 2006, 10:18:09 AM
I think the only really good thing that could happen in BB7 is for Erika and Janelle to be the final Two.

After ALL that Will and Boogie have done...and all the posturing and preening in the Diary Room feeds...it would be SWEET to see them ousted one after the other in the next two evictions.

And I'd love to see the looks on the sequester house guest faces when each walks in.

Re: big brother no spoilers.

(after rereading this it might give some indication who won pov, so if you really don't want to have any clues don't read this).

I sort of wanted janelle and will to be the final two, with janelle winning.
I do not under any circumstances want to see erika vs boogie. Unless somehow she realilzes that he showmanced her and can use it to beat him. But still i do not want her to win.

I would be okay with will and boogie in the F2 with will winning. But then it would show that the guys outwitted the girls. BUt i still can't help loving dr will.

I didn't think i would be happy with an erika/janelle final, mostly because erika has been making me want to puke. I wish there was some way for her to find out that boogie has been showmancing her and can't stand her. But since willboogie are the only two who know about this, i guess it won't happen.

I think if erika could genuinely be trusted, and if she worked with janelle to get rid of will and boogie then she would redeem herself to me (but i'd still want janelle to win).

I wonder who will and boogie would vote for in an erika/janelle final.

TOD - I was pretty obsessed with the OJ trial.  ..I'll just say I think this case was Marcia Clark's to lose and she did.

I was recently retired when the Brentwood murders happened, and, thanx to CNN, became a avid "junkie".

The case started a nose dive here:

and went belly-up here:

Marcia notwithstanding, the parade of evidence indicating the gross incompetence, and total disregard for evidentiary procedures, of the LAPD sure made the defense job easier.

When you have jury members whose "culture" is to presume that the "Authorities" will lie and cheat to get a conviction, Fuhrman's "obvious to the casual observer" blatant lying under oath sowed all the seeds of reasonable doubt necessary.

Do I think O.J. did it it - Yes! If I were on the Jury, would I have voted to convict - probably not! If I were the only not-guilty hold-out after days of deliberation would I have caved, probably.

It still boggles my mind that the LAPD, who know within hours that they had a high profile multiple celebrity murder case on their hands, failed to assign a team of "bean counters" to endure that each and every rule, regulation and procedure was followed, and who checked and double-checked everything. Detectives taking blood evidence home for the night - PLEASE!

My long weekend is nearing it's end...but I did get two, count 'em, two Bollywood movies watched.

The first was a Punjabi film starring my favorite Dara Singh. SAWA LAKH SE EK LADAUN (1976) which was about rebels fighting evil rules back in the old, old days. It was an Ok movie, but nothing to write home about.

the second Bollywood movie was a fun comedy/science fiction film titled SHREEMAN FUNTOOSH and it starred the popular singer Kishore Kumar along with Kum Kum, Jeevankala, and Baby Yasmin.

Part of the film was sort of a take off of THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN.

Now this one I could really go for.   I don't watch the feeds and haven't had a chance to read Canoe, so I don't know exactly what happened with the women.  If Janelle does kick out Will, my opinion of her may change for the better.  I don't mind Erika.  Her strategy is a strategy....being a floater and shifting with the power but not getting voted out, that actually takes some talent in this show.

Re: OJ trial.   The glove thing was a HUGE mistake by the prosecution and was egged on by Johnnie Cochran telling Darden if he didn't have him put on the glove the defense was going to.   How dumb of course a leather glove that has been wet with blood is going to shrink.  That was just an ego mistake as were many others.

Cochran was good at egging on Darden and to a lesser extent Clark.  Mark Fuhrman was another - if you don't call him we will.  How stupid.  If he wasn't called in the first place, and they didn't need him to be, the defense would have no credibility to attack.   Basic mistakes in trial strategy.

Well I met Batman and Robin...masquerading as the bug man and his son.  Anyway it turns out I have very polite bats.  The only guano they found was in a tray immediately below my attic air vent.

We didn't see any bats, but there was evidence (guano) that they were there.   Much to my chagrin, I agreed to let them use sticky traps.  If the bats are in my walls, (and I did hear scratching last night) there is just no way to get them out.  They will either go into the basement and into the house - YIKES! or the sticky traps will get them in the attic.  I really do feel sick about killing them, but they carry rabies and I just can't take a chance with them in the house.

I think there's another way to deal with the bats, Cillaliz. It's called exclusion, and it consists of a covering over the opening where they enter the building. They can get out in the evening, but can't get back inside. Then put a bat house near the opening so they'll have somewhere to roost. Very few bats have rabies --  only the ones you find on the ground, which won't bite unless you pick them up.

Michael O'Keefe garnered a well deserved Oscar nomination for THE GREAT SANTINI. My heart went out to him in that movie, and the movie itself has always been underrated in my mind.

It had the bad luck to come out the same year as ORDINARY PEOPLE, RAGING BULL, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER, THE ELEPHANT MAN, TESS, RESURRECTION - all great films, and I think it got lost a bit in the shuffle.

That's what I wanted to do, the problem is we can't figure out exactly where they are getting in.  There is another company that does bat proofing. I called them first, but they were so rude I called the other company and am going this route for now.

I may call the batproofing place, but I hate to just throw away the money I spent today.  I'll see if I hear them in the wall tonight.

The bats we have here are the big brown bats and they hibernate in houses rather than migrating. So while they have to leave for food, within the next month or so they will start hibernating and then they don't leave the house until spring. So it's possible to seal them in thinking they are gone and then all hell breaks loose in the spring when there is no way out.

I'm not happy about the situation, but I'm not sure what else to do

Enter Batman number 2...he contends that batman number 1 is the evil twin. He also said it isn't legal to kill bats. Who knew?  So he will be going to my house in about 45 minutes. They go over your entire house and seal everywhere the bats can get in.  This will be interesting. It may be throwing good money after bad, but my conscience is really bothering me so....
Title: Re:CLIPPED HEDGES

I thought it was illegal to kill bats. Hopefully this guy will do the exclusion thing. Big brown bats will roost in bat houses -- so maybe if you put a couple up, they'll roost in those instead. I think it would be swell to have bats in a bat house. We get Mexican free-tail bats here, which roost in caves (and cave-like things).

Well Batman number 2 seems to be more the real deal and not the evil imposter that Batman number 1 is (Batman number 2 was lacking a Robin, however) .

Although I was surprised when he said the bats leave the house before dawn. I thought they left at dusk, but that wouldn't account for them being in my house at night. So, who knew that a nocturnal animal leaves the house every morning.

Anyway, he's coming back in the morning to batproof my house.  The good thing is, to do that he'll have to fix some things that really need fixing (like a rotten board near one of the eaves etc). The house will be pretty sealed for winter when he's done.   He will also put in a bat door so they can get out but not back in, if it looks like we need to.

I'm much happier with him.  He laughed when I told him my conscience had been bothering me ever since I agreed to have the strips put in.  I told him how I got the bat out of the house without harming it...he said "I use a tennis racket, if it's in my house, either he dies or I do" Not quite the answer I expected from Batman number 2 aka Fred.

TOTD. It was hard to escape the Lindy Chamberlain/Dingo & The Baby case here.

It was a wonderful example of media manipulation of the public. A total swing around!

I still believe there was human intervention and that the Dingo was framed! (Unless there is a Dingo out there that can fold clothes).

Ms Streep was I believe unfairly criticized for her strange accent in the movie.  It was not meant to be Australian. Lindy was from New Zealand and most of her accent remained - but with an Australian inflection.

A television set on display at the Berlin consumer- electronics fair IFA costs a cool 100,000 euros (130,000 dollars), organizers said Monday after surveying the expo for the dearest TV.

The LCD panel from Italian maker Keymat Industrie is plated with white gold and studded with 4 grams of diamonds.

Keymat, which said IFA was the first non-Italian fair where the model from its Yalos range was shown, added that US and Saudi buyers had already shown interest. IFA runs until Wednesday.

Last week, a German hi-fi magazine demonstrated at IFA what it described as the world's most expensive music system.

In an annual demonstration of what a hi-fi lover would love to own, Audio magazine borrowed equipment worth 750,000 euros (975,000 dollars) to assemble the sound system which includes a 220-kilogram record-player costing 125,000 euros.

Harsh discipline, verbal abuse and, most allegedly, incestuous homosexual rape.

Thanks for the tip.

Dear esteemed, rested, strained, and neatly-clipped BK --

Today has been an endless string of "catch up errands" caused by being away from the country for 2 weeks.

This past Saturday evening (the 2nd), as my aeroplane dipped and bumped its way toward a landing at JFK around 7:00 PM, I just want to let the Manhattan H/Ks know that great waves of my hand and verbal greetings were sent to you all.

While up in the air, the pilot merely said (and very casually) "...and there is some rain at JFK so we might have a few bumps on the way down."  It was only later, ensconsed in the world's ugliest Holiday Inn in Newark, NJ, that the TV news let me know that we had basically landed in the tail-end remnant of hurricane Ernesto!

One of my treasures on the trip, was my copy of "Rewind" which I took with me.  It provided me a lot of enjoyable reading.  Then when arriving home, my brand new shiny copy of "Deceit" was waiting for me.  DP Kerry and I watched it on Sunday evening, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you BK.  :)

And now, Sugar is fed and very happy, and so it is off to some night errands.

TOD :

Even though I was very young, I was (and still am) very curious about the George Reeves case.

And I don't think I'll ever fully understand how there could be anything that could be called a human being, that could possibly cause the disgusting violence that was heaped upon Matthew Sheppard.

I didn’t follow the OJ trial as much as the original murders & chase.  It was difficult not to pay attention when the street my brother lives on was constantly in the news.

This woman I know was working in her shop when a strange man entered.  She spent a good amount of time helping him, in fact she was extra nice to him.  A short while later a group of people joined him & began giving her a difficult time, so much so, she began to feel very nervous about them.  The strange man told them to leave her alone, she was “good people”.   It wasn’t long after that the Manson murders took place & the strange man & his crowd where all over the news.

I used to visit this shop all the time, so glad I wasn't there that day.

Probably the true crime case I followed the closest was the Ted Bundy case, and not just because he went to my high school.  The murders of young women with long-hair, parted in the middle, terrorized Western Washington throughout all of 1974 long before Ted Bundy's name ever became associated with the crime.  By that time, Ted has been arrested in Utah  on suspicion of burglary.  He was later charged with attempted kidnapping of the only woman known to have escaped from Ted.  Eventually, Ted was connected to all of the disappearances in Washington, plus others in Utah and Colorado and finally in Florida (he escaped twice), as well as being suspected in dozen of other missing women's cases.

In a eerie footnote, back in the early Sixties a little eight year old girl disaapeared from her home here in Tacoma.  At first it was thought to be a possible custody battle between her parents, but eventually became one of Tacoma's most high-profile unsolved kidnappings.  Only years later did we find out that at the time of the kidnapping, fourteen year old Ted Bundy was the family's paperboy, and knew the little girl very well.

I'm really tired, I spent most of the night last night waking up every 5 minutes thinking that the bat scratching on the wall was about to make it into my bedroom.  Yes, I have discovered I have a REAL bat phobia.  From a distance they are fine, but I seem to be terrified of them in my house.  Thus, the batman adventures, no matter what the cost, shall be worth it.   I can sit in a little room and have no fear of humans who have done some terrible things, but a little bat who means me no harm scares the bejesus out of me....go figure that one

The ratio of single men to single women between ages 15 and 44 last year was highest in Nevada (120.2 per 100 women), North Dakota (120.1) and Alaska (118.9). It was lowest in the District of Columbia (93.4).

Commuters in New York state had the longest average daily trip to work last year at 31.2 minutes, followed closely by commuters in Maryland and New Jersey. Those in the Dakotas had the easiest trip on average: only 16 minutes.

1. I have not seen any single men in my age group in YEARS!!!  They have to be hiding...

2. During the summers I often walk to campus and it is usually a 34 minute walk and in the winter I drive due to the hours and it is a 9 minute drive...

However that is a bit of a mistake on the drive time, especially if you live in the rural areas and the dreaded season of road construction. It can sometimes be a longer.
