Well, you've read the notes, the notes returned, and now it is time for you to post until the returning cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: REGALE!
-
Good morning, all!
-
DR singdaw, as I type this I am listening to Gounod's St Cecilia Mass, which is quite beautiful. I hope your Thanksgiving shopping went well.
-
DR JohnG, thanks for the Kino information on Mephisto!
-
With all of this Hansel and Gretel discussion, I'm ready to drag out my DVDs!
-
I looked on eBay, and there is quite a bit of the 1954 merchandizing for sale: the Dell comic book, several different posters, stills, jigsaw puzzles, but neither of the two recordings I owned then.
-
I have no plans today, so after a general tidy up, I'll most likely spend the day lying about with the babies.
-
DR elmore3003, the Gounod is beautiful. And the shopping went off without a hitch; thank you!
I always go very early or very late anyway, to avoid the most germs, but I didn't know if that would work so close to Thanksgiving. But it did.
-
HHW has got me in the mood; I'm going to go watch Hansel und Gretel, and that will be my morning worship.
-
I've moved from Gounod to Britten's "Hymn to St Cecilia" and then to Bach Cantata #147.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Coming across it on cable years ago, I was taken in by Wicker Park. "Disappearance" movies simultaneously fascinate and freak me the hell out. Seeing it a second time a few years after that, it seemed weak. I knew I should follow up on the original, but never got around to it.
-
Nice merchandizing stuff there, and it makes me wonder if my sister and I had any of that when we were kids. We certainly knew the H&G story, had plenty of childrens' books, and certainly some records. I'll have to ask my sister what she remembers.
Bottom line on my reaction to the opera: The music is incredibly beautiful throughout, and I hadn't ever dived into it enough to know that. Everyone "knows" the Evening Prayer, of course, but as with most things, hearing it properly played and sung can blow you away.
DR Elmore: Is there a "best" edition of the score out there, or does it matter?
-

Vocal or orchestral? I had the old Schirmer vocal score, which I recall was only in English in the Constance Bache version used in that 1947 Columbia-Met recording. I have the Eulenberg miniature score and the larger Dover full score, which is a great deal at $24.95. There's also a Dover vocal score, also the Constance Bache version, at $19.95, but for $5.00 more you can get the full score.
Theodore Front Music says the Eulenberg miniature score is now $61.00.
-
Sunday.....rainy Sunday.
-
Thank you! I love many of Dover’s and might go for both, or at least the full score. Sure beats settling for somebody’s crappy old Kalmus.
Today’s Eulenberg prices are unbelievable. Well, music prices in general. It’s hard for me to fathom how today’s music students buy anything.

On the archeological front, I discovered an unopened tin of Irish steel-cut oatmeal in our pantry. The "sell by" date is in 2013.

Did I ever tell my tale of the Sucrets tin in my bathroom cabinet?
Well, you don’t want to hear it.

On Friday afternoon, when I took my bath, I removed my Bermuda shorts - I only wear short pants in the apartment because long pants are too painful an ordeal to get into - and hung them on the bathroom door knob. Then I lost them. I moved them from the door, but I could not remember where the fat hell I moved them to. So . . . yesterday I wore another pair while I searched for the shorts I'd misplaced. I found them this morning. I prefer to blame the cats rather than my mental state.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Cats are a good excuse for a lot of things.

Here’s a nice kitty. Regal.

I want to be lazy today.

I'm succeeding so far.

Wow! He's beautiful. And huge!

I just dropped a bottle of olive oil on the kitchen floor. By the time I lowered myself to the floor with the aid of my walker. I had a big mess to clean up. Thank God for three things: paper towels, Fantastick, and Stella's not walking though the mess.

He reminds me of one of my most precious memories. When I was living in Florida, we had a wildlife rehabilitation center in the area. They took in the exotics that the rich would buy and then not know what to do with, such as leopards, large monkeys, you name it. They had a black panther who had a baby, and in the hopes of getting some positive press, they brought the baby to the newspaper office. I got to cuddle the baby. Oh, what a joy. He was an armful, I'll admit, but holding him was indescribable bliss. Somewhere I have a photo of him in my arms. I've looked for that photo, but it's in a folder with other treasured photos and it's filed somewhere where I won't lose it. Right.
-
Let's move on up!
-
Two!
-
"The Secret Sucrets" shall be the title of my next memoir.
-
It will be a real page-turner.
-
Facebook just informed me that I can buy SlimJims in a convenient 120-stick pack. The wonders of our modern world.
-
Such a time to be alive.

DR elmore3003, have you heard this latest rendition of the Britten? It got an interesting write-up in Gramophone recently.

I just read that Americans consume 15 billion quarts of popcorn per year (which works out to 45 quarts per person).

DR John G. - not sure where you are in Texas. Have you ever been to the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden? It sounds wonderful.

I'm in San Antonio. I have not been to the Dallas Aboretum. But I really want to go.
When I was at Chez Panisse in March, I sat next to a woman who worked there. She was a real foodie, and we got to talking. Her husband wasn't as into the food as we were. We even swapped plates and samples, even though it was the beginning of covid.
She yearned after my anchovy plate. I wanted a taste of her salad.

I got a fundraising letter in the mail from The Musical Theater Project.
It was addressed correctly with my name and address, but in the salutation, it starts "Dear Darlene..."
How did they find out my drag name?
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! It’s gray and rainy here in SW Ohio today. We went to Zoom church this morning and now we’re hunkered down watching the Bengals.
-
DR John G, your visit to Chez Panisse didn’t register with me in March, but it did today because my book group just read Alice Waters’ Coming to my Senses. We discussed it virtually Thursday evening and two of our members talked about their experiences there.
-
"Dear Darlene" is how I begin all of my emails.
It makes people notice!
-
It turns out that the preview for A CHRISTMAS ZOOM CAROL is next Sunday, November 29. I misread the email.....even though it wasn't sent to Dear Darlene.
-
I don't think we have our regular meeting tonight....since most of the participants are now off campus on holiday....such as it is.
-
Tomorrow I shall look for a dentist - which will be as difficult as finding the money to pay for the work.....I would guess. Time will tell.

~~~DENTAL VIBES~~~ to both DRs vixmom and Jrand70...
Today, we took a nap instead of a walk.
I was walking in my dream; does that count?
How was the book? I haven't read it. Actually I haven't read any of Alice's books or her daughter's, which I hear is great.
-
Many people don't know that in Sondheim's first draft of "Epiphany," Todd sang "But the celeraic waits, I'm alive at last, and I'm full of joy!"
-
I just read that Americans consume 15 billion quarts of popcorn per year (which works out to 45 quarts per person).
Someone must be eating an awful lot, I don’t think Vixdad and I have had popcorn in at least 5 years, maybe more
So biting down on an unpopped kernel is not the cause of your needing new crowns, then.
-
Back from a quick and fun rehearsal - kept blocking very simple because we're shooting it for film, not stage, so I wanted all the set-ups to be simple and easy. It's short and sweet and I don't want to over rehearse the actors, so we have one more on Tuesday, and then we shoot the following week.
-
Three!
-
The soup is cooking. Time to start Dragnet Girl, a silent Japanese film. Great title.
-
Listening to Hansel Und Gretel - which is completely delightful, I must say. I began with the Kurt Eichhorn recording with Anna Moffo. Sounds pretty good. Then I'll do the Jeffrey Tate then the one in English then the puppet film.
-
Got my favorite pasta from Stanley's for food, thanks to another 30% off deal.
It was a lot of her early life and not much about Chez Panisse until near the end. I just picked up her daughter’s book at the library. If you’ll PM your email address I’ll forward something you may find interesting.
That is truly a treasured memory, one that I would love to have for my own.
Keith consumes a lot of pop corn though far less than he used to.
No, unfortunately teeth don’t deal well with large amounts of radiation.
Still, I prefer rotten teeth to giving up breathing
Dentist and dental vibes for Jack
DR John congratulations to San Antonio.
"As of January 1, 2021, pet stores in San Antonio will be able to sell cats and dogs only obtained from shelters, animal rescue groups, or animal control agencies."
So no purebred animals?
Starting a flick called Penelope with Natalie Wood as a bank robber. Peter Falk, Ian Bannen, Lila Kedrova, Jonathan Winters. It will either be wonderful or anything but.
Natalie Wood does her own singing in this one. It may be why I had never heard of it.
-
Now listening to Jeffrey Tate's version - much wider dynamics than the Eichhorn, which isn't necessarily a plus in my opinion. But the orchestra playing is superb. Waiting for the cast to arrive.
-
So no purebred animals?
Unless they have been rescued.
-
Natalie Wood cannot pronounce Givenchy. It's one of the funniest running gags in the movie. I wonder if it were intentional.
-
Now that's funny.
-
Natalie Wood as a singing bank robber?
-
A lot of people on Amazon seem to think this is a pretty good book.
-
Finished the weird stop motion movie of Hansel and Gretel - I'm sure it would be much more enjoyable if it actually looked good. ChasSmith hinted at it, but this transfer was created for VHS and that's what this looks like - this was a Technicolor movie and should look amazing. I'm sure they took their tape VHS transfer and stuck it on to this disc and poorly authored it on top of that. I'm pretty sure this thing is in the public domain.
-
Got a half hour into the film of A Delicate Balance, and I think I've had it for the evening. Edward Albee screaming is something I can only take so much of, though I loved it with Elaine Stritch the one and only time I saw her.
-
I'm going to go read.
-
But first, let's leave this page.
-
One more ...
-
Four!
-
Good night, all.
Last summer, I found a can of chili in my small pantry that had a best buy date of 2003! I moved here in 2006! :o
Last night at the grocery, I noticed they had pheasants next to the turkeys. The price was decent, for pheasant, I guess. So, I bought one. It will be dinner Thursday. I haven't figured out how to fix it yet. Auditioning recipes.
Before cooking, cover it with, at least one quart of Ethenol. It is the only way to prepare pheasant under gas.
-
Where the hell is everyone?
-
The holiday is not until Thursday.
-
Besides, no one should be traveling this year for the holiday.
-
I will say Christa Ludwig is amazing.
The only thing that I've really seen/heard her in is the video and recording of Bernstein's Candide. I thought she was great as the Old Lady.
Hi, Tom.
-
Hi. I am just quiet tonight.
They just said on the news that waiting times in drive-thru restaurants Lines have increased since CoVid-19. Duh! If you can’t sit down and eat in restaurants, naturally you will have to go through the drive-in lanes, instead.
There was the report that Grand opening of Colorado In-N-Out burger sparks traffic jams, parking lot brawls and 14-hour wait times (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/grand-opening-of-colorado-in-n-out-burger-sparks-traffic-jams-parking-lot-brawls-and-14-hour-wait-times/ar-BB1beIS3)!
WTF?? :o Who in their right mind would wait in a drive-thru for burgers for 14 HOURS??
Somebody else is eating my ten gallons of popcorn, or whatever it was. I don’t touch the stuff.
It was still edible, though...not great, but not horrible.
Hello, George.
Probably someone who was about to get in line for Covid testing and needed some food to keep them going.
Tonight I watched the first half (+) of FUNNY GIRL from 2018. It stars Sheridan Smith as Fanny in the British stage version. Darius Campbell plays a very good looking Nick.
-
It is interesting to see a production of the stage musical. I am enjoying it.
I've only seen one local production and enjoyed it.
I haven't seen that London production, though.
And now, since we're so close...
Today I watched a streaming version of a musical review called ASSISTED LIVING: THE MUSICAL. The four member cast did a series of songs and monologs about various phases of older age, such as sagging boobs, erectile disfunction and losing your false teeth.
How did it compare to FUNNY GIRL?
Three of the four members of the company were very entertaining. The fourth member was fine, she just lacked the years of experience and professionalism that the other three had.
All of the information I had received told me that I couldn’t access the broadcast until the 2:00 pm starting time. It said I could sign in, but not to enter the entry code until two o’clock or I would get a denial error message.
-
So, at 1:20, I signed in, and the show just started. No entry code, no 2:00 pm curtain.
Today, I went shopping for my sister at Fred Meyer.
It was kind of crowded, but not too crazy.
There were a few people who didn't know how wear their masks, though. ::)
Last Wednesday, I submitted an order from Safeway to be delivered between noon and 1:00 pm.
-
At 12:55, I received a text that the order was delayed. At 4:10 the order was delivered by a Door Dash driver, who left it spread out on my front porch. WTF?
-
BK, if you want an enjoyable Thanksgiving dinner substitute, I would recommend Marie Calendar’s Turkey and dressing entree for two. The turkey, the dressing and the gravy are all delicious. The whipped potatoes suck, but you can’t have everything.
-
Well, good night.
Good night, Tom.
Well, I hate to do it, but I need to get to sleep. Tomorrow's a workday. I need to compile the end-of-the-month invoicing so that they can be paid.
Have a good day tomorrow, all!
