Title: YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW
Post by: bk on May 16, 2005, 12:00:05 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are now with it and in the know, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which, since it wasn't yesterday, will either be today or tomorrow.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts and the best of the same to DR Elmore.

We will look forward to your safe and healthy return.  And remember -

EXPECTORATE, baby, EXPECTORATE!

When I was in my twenties, my favorite non-fiction books were all about the Hollywood blacklist.  There were some really good ones, and some really poor ones.  I'm quite partial to biographies about composers and have read several interesting ones - unfortunately, Meryl Secrest's Sondheim: A Life was not one of them.  I have several wonderful autobiographies by composers, including books by Darius Milhaud, Dimitri Tiomkin, David Amram, and George Antheil.  Tom Nolan's book on Ross Macdonald is worth a read.  Though they're not great, I also enjoyed Ken Russell's autobiography, and Frankie Howerd's, too.

Good morning!

Just wanted to send out health vibes to two of our favorite guys,
Tom and Elmore.  I'm taking the laptop to work today--don't know if I will be able to find a place to connect but I shall try at my lunch hour.

Also congrats to our own DR Charles Pogue.  Every good wish for a very successful show as well.   :)

Have a safe and happy day all!

Good Morning all. I see Mr. Moore is here. I am available for a small, intimate dinner with Rodz, you, Bruce and me on Saturday. Anthony has a show so I must do something to keep myself occupied.

Saw the glorious Brian Stokes-Mitchell last night. I'm a big fan of his. He has taken his cabaret show and turned it into a 90 minute show now running at the Vivian Beaumont. It's a short run although who knows, it may extend based on the good reviews he got this morning.

I'll be back later but I have to run and start my day here at the office.

Good morning, all!  The pre-op anxiety is settling in; I'm not frightened, only terrified.  I go through the same thing with a dental appointment or a physical:  it's the curse of being paranoid.  It sounds like DRTomovoz' week away indicates heavier internal work than I'm receiving, but I hope to be back to HHW either tomorrow evening after I'm home or Wednesday morning.  Tday, I'm pretty much housebound because of pre-op procedures.

Once again, I'll just state how wonderful all my friends at HHW are, supportive and positive.  I'm grateful for your kind words and wishes.

Today's topic is great:  the best bios I've read recently are Antonia Fraser's MARIE ANTOINETTE and Alison Weir's bio of Elizabeth I.  Both books not only clarified historical situations for me but also clearly cared for their subjects.  I knew next to nothing of Marie Antoinette beyond a frivolous fashionista, and I found her growth from naive Austrian princess to victim of the French Revolution quite moving and tragic.  Alison Weir's bio of Elizabeth was excellent. I never thought I'd shed tears over an English queen from the sixteenth century, and Weir's bio of an extraordinary woman did just that.

I'm currently reading three bios from Amazon.uk:  John Schlessinger, Michael Redgrave, and John Fraser.  I enjoyed Stephen Citron's JERRY HERMAN: POET OF THE SHOWTUNE, and I thought Ted Chapin's EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE was quite wonderful.

Good vibes to Tom and Elmore.

Yes, I was errant and truant over the weekend, but I'm here now.

Cornelia Otis Skinner wrote, "Elegant Wits and Grand Horizontals," a wonderful book on la belle epoque.

There was a nice book on the 20's and 30's (more or less) called "When We Traveled First Class"

"Everything Was Possible" was quite good.

I love biographies and autobiographies. Without looking through my library to see which ones to list, here are a few I can think of:

Peter Duchin's autobiography was interesting and nicely done.
"Opposite Attraction" (a bio of Paulette Goddard and Erica Marie Remarque) was fascinating-- although I didn't think any book could ever truly capture (let alone tell the story of) Paulette Goddard.
The various reminiscences written by Anita Loos have been nice.
"Intimate Nights," a book on New York Cabaret in the 40's and 50's is good.
"The Right Stuff" turned out to be quite riveting.

For those of you so inclined and with the ability to listen to Internet radio, I will be on briefly, albeit via tape, this morning on BBC Radio 3 during Stage and Screen. I will introduce a song I chose for their Listener Request program. It looks like I'm early in the show (song number 3).

The show is live at 11am Eastern Standard Time and then will be available at the Web site for one week for your listening pleasure.

Here is the link to the Stage and Screen Home Page

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/stageandscreen/

Here is the link to BBC Radio 3 main page if you wish to listen live (though it's rather slow here this morning, not much traffic)

Vixmom, glad to hear that you and the Dear Husband and Dear Daughter enjoyed the show so much. I passed Steve's comments on to Anthony. He is also very pleased. I see the show again this Friday with more friends.

Favorite non-fiction:

SONDHEIM & CO. by Craig Zadan I wish he wasn't such a busy producer so he could update this terrific book.

A VOICE IN THE DARK by Richard Barrios, the best, most complete survey of early musical films ever written. I can't imagine anyone ever covering the topic more thoroughly or with better stills.

BEHIND THE SCREEN by William J. Mann about gays behind the scenes in Hollywood during the early years and golden age. It's a fascinating read.

EVERYTHING WAS POSSIBLE is a fabulous book about my favorite musical of all time - FOLLIES, so, of course, I'd have to include it.

THE SEASON by William Goldman, of course. Never to be equalled. I wish he'd do another one with another Broadway season.

DRKerry, I love "Elegant wits and Grand Horizontals"!  What a great survay of Parisian culture and customs in the late 19th Century.  I own two copies of the book; I thought I'd lost my copy so I bought another.

I also thought James Kirkwood's "American Grotesque" was a great telling of moron Jim Garrison's attempts to turn gay Clay Shaw into a Kennedy assassin out of homophobia and, so gossip says, his own queer bent.

I just received the sweetest teddy bear (a doctor Bear, no less!) from DRvixmom.  If I weren't feeling so anxious about tomorrow, I'd burst into tears over how wonderful you all are!

Just read some tidbits about canceled and returning TV shows.

Surprisingly, THE OFFICE has been renewed (I'm happy becasue I grew to love this US edition. Can't match the uk version naturally, but it's still funny in its own way). LESS THAN PERFECT has been renewed by ABC along with HOPE & FAITH and (big surprise) JAKE IN PROGRESS which garnered dismal ratings this season after a big start. BERNIE MAC and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT were both renewed.

Surprise cancellations: LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY, MEDICAL INVESTIGATION, COMMITTED, 8 SIMPLE RULES, MY WIFE & KIDS, AMERICAN DREAMS, JACK & BOBBY.

DRvixmom, if the rumors about Jim Garrison molesting a boy at the country club swimming pool are correct, I'd guess good ol' Jim, played as a hero in Oliver Stone's shameful attempt to make him a good guy, had already turned gay.

I hope Jim Garrison is rotting in hell wherever he is, and I sort of hope Mr Stone ends up with him.

DR elmore - I'm thinking about you and wishing you the best today and tomorrow  :-*

I had an interesting experience when my book group was reading the Antonia Fraser bio of Marie Antoinette.  At the same time, I was listening in the car to the David McCullough bio of John Adams and the 2 books intersected!  In fact, McCullough tells a story about MA that's not in the Fraser book (about when John, Abigail, John Quincy, and Nabby Adams, along with Thomas Jefferson, attended the Te Deum at Notre Dame celebrating the 1785 birth of the Duke of Normandy).

I mentioned a few months ago that I had discoverd that an old ( I mean 28 years ago!) boyfriend had become an author and film maker.

I just received this email from him, which I pass on in case anyone in the NYC area is interested

Greetings,

My new feature film, YOU ARE ALONE, will have it's world premiere at the Brooklyn International Film Fesitval, at 10 PM on Thursday, June 9th.

Here's a link to the film's page on the BIFF site: http://wbff.org/films/detail.asp?cid=1&fid=499

The links at the top of that page will get you directions, and everything you might need.

To purchase tickets in advance, go here:

http://www.acteva.com/booking.cfm?bevaID=87868

There will be a Q&A afterwards with me, Jessica Bohl and Frank Loftus.

Hope to see everyone there.

If you live in NYC, and have a favorite coffee shop/video store...any place where you can post a poster/flyer...PLEASE let me know ASAP, and I will get you whatever you need.

Any questions, don't hesitate...

Thanks,

Gorman Bechard

I have actually6 read the screenplay and it was quite gripping.  Hopefully it translates well to film.

As for non-fiction...

Jablonski's biography of George Gershwin.

Two books by James W. Clarke - "American Assassins: The Darker Side of Politics" and "On Being Mad or Merely Angry: John W. Hinckley, Jr., and Other Dangerous People".  I read these when I was in pre-production for Sondheim's Assassins.  Quite good reads.  Very informative and illuminating.  *It was also "fun" reading some of the criticism of these books, claiming they were full of inaccuracies and conjecture - especially in regards to Oswald.  Many times, it was just a theory challenging another theory.

"On Being Gay: Thoughts on Family, Faith, and Love" by Brian McNaught - This book was invaluable to me when I was coming out during my senior year in high school.  A Catholic high school.  And I've frequently given copies to other "newbies" as they begin their journey.

Ned Rorem - I've read a bunch of the diaries.

Gerald Moore - "Am I Too Loud?" (his autobiography) and "The Unashamed Accompanist" (basically a master-class in print).  Both books should be required reading for ALL pianists, accompanists and soloists.  Oh, and "Singer and Accompanist" too.  *Which I just looked up on Amazon - it's out of print, but used copies are starting at $106!  Hmmm...  And there are also reasonably priced copies of "Farewell Recital: Further Memories" available too.  Hmm...

-I think that's enough eclecticity for now.  Hmmm... I like that new word: eclecticity.  -You saw it here first, folks!

DR Jose - You mentioned a book that was significant to you personally that you've passed along to others in similar circumstances.  I have 2 that I have shared with many career women who are grappling with the stay-at-home mom challenges:

Sequencing: A New Solution for Women Who Want Marriage, Career, and Family, by Arlene Rossen Cardozo
What's a Smart Woman Like You Doing at Home?, by Linda Burton, Janet Dittmer, and Cheri Loveless

Oh, apparently I maligned the local Jiffy Lube.. they may have indeed replaced the radiator coolant. This morning I discovered a leak in one of my heater hoses which was spraying coolant all over the engine.

So the car is in the shop getting new hoses.  That new belt I got during the nine hour  commute in the blizzard a few months ago had begun squealing like a stuck pig as well, so I had them look at that... turns out the "tensioner" spring had gone and a new tensioner was called for... another $250 down the old blue hole... ah well, its strill cheaper than a new car, and this baby is 10 years old with over 170 K on it so I really shouldn't complain.

I will of course, but I shouldn't.

I Ain't Down Yet - autobiography of Gale Storm
The Girl Who Had Everything - bio of Dorian Leigh

The Decline & Fall of the Love Goddesses by Patrick Agan
Played Out - bio of Jean Seberg by David Richards

and a couple already mentioned The Season by William Goldman and Everything Was Possible.

Favourite non-fiction books:

GOODNIGHT, SWEET PRINCE by Gene Fowler, the bio of John Barrymore.

MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING also by Fowler, about him hanging around with Barrymore, W.C. Fields, and John Decker in the waning days of all these men.

THE GREAT TIMES, THE GOOD TIMES, a bio of Maurice Barrymore, who may have been the true genius of the Barrymore family.

PETER HALL'S DIARIES covering the time when he and Olivier were setting up the National Theatre.

THE ACTOR'S LIFE, CharltonHeston's diaries from early in his career up to the late seventies.  My copy is autographed by the big man from when I worked with him.

BROADWAY BABIES SAY GOODNIGHT by Mark Steyn.  Interesting book about musical theatre.

NOT SINCE CARRIE, by Ken Mandelbaum, about musical flops.

LETTERS FROM AN ACTOR by William Redfield, about his time during the Gielgud/Burton HAMLET and just one of the best, dishy books about acting period.

THEN CAME EACH ACTOR, an interesting book and very opinionated (all of which I don't agree with) about Shakespearean actors from Elizabethan times on up...written Bernard Grebanier.

RICHARD III, best bio of the king by Paul Murray Kendall.

GUIDE TO SUPERNATURAL FICTION by E. F. Bleier.  Fascinating study of most of the great supernatural fiction.

BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA by Noel Black.  Brilliant accounting of the history and events leading up to The Black Hole incident inCalcutta in the 1700's.

HYPE & GLORY by William Goldman, about his adventures as a judge for the Miss America Pageant and at the Cannes Film Festival.

THE SEASON by William Goldman.

ADVENTURES IN THE SCREEN TRADE by William Goldman.  Best screenwriting book ever.

THE COMPLETE JACK THE RIPPER by Donald  Rumbelow.

DR MBarnum, last night you commented that you were the only one here who watches Survivor.  You forgot about me! :)  Let me guess, you loved the finale.  Me I hated it!  I thought Ian was stupid.  I just didn't like Tom (although I suppose I should have since I'm always saying i like the best to win).  Me I liked Steph.  I just didn't like the finale at all. Not at all interesting.  I was sort of starting to respect tom (for saying he'd keep his word and keep ian). But then he went and voted for him over jen (was really unimpressed with that). And it went downhill from there. :(

I was just wondering, does anyone know if the IRS makes the Extreme Makeover recipients pay income tax on the value of the work and items received?  I don't really follow the show, but from what I hear most of the homeowners are quite cash poor.  I wonder how they are able to raise the cash.... (home equity loan, I suppose!!)

Anthony’s show has Bicycle Built for Two!  My mother sang that all the time when I was young. :)

Yes, and it stars Anthony and a rather large lady (whose name I cannot at this moment recall) and it is hysterically funny

BK, Jack the Ripper is one of those topics on which I have many a volume...a whole shelf of books.  Richard III's the same way...I'mm firmly in the camp that he was innocent of most of the chrges levelled against him, especially offing the Princes in the Tower.  I collect lots of periods of British history...Celtic/Roman; Elizabethan; Restoration; Regency...and with a special emphasis on n'er-do-wells, rake-hells, highwaymen, duellists, Bow-Street Runners...and other aspects of the English crime, vice, and the underworld.

I'm back from the week from hell.  Oy.

First things first:

Speedy recoveries to Elmore and TomofOz!!

I read a lot of non-fiction (in fact, probably three or four times as much as fiction), so my list would be very long indeed.  However, in researching this new book I'm writing, I've been reading two very interesting books for those interested in religious history and occult orders:  The Second Messiah and The Templars.  Both are quite excellent.  Do NOT read them if you are a Christian fundamentalist.   ;D

Our very own Charles Edward Pogue was mentioned by name today in a full page (at least full above the listings) Oregonian review of Hercules.  Sorry to say the review was a bit on the mixed side, but the reviewer did say he felt the "murkiness" was due in part to the show having been edited down to 3 hours.  Good luck on Hercules' battle with the Barone family tonight!!!   ;)

Wow!  What did you think Ian was "intending" when he spoke to Katie and Jenn about voting Tom out?  Does that sound like someone who was going to "honor" an agreement?

Ian made his own bed....he outsmarted himself.  Tom reacted the right way.  Katie should have voted for Ian as well.

Tom confronted Ian who confessed.   Did that mean nothing to you?

Tom played the game the best...and he played it with honor.  Even Greg, Katie and Jenn were planning to vote out Tom when they were on the yacht.

Greg and Ian, both, were plotting to dishonor their agreement with Tom before Tom found them out.

No, there won't be any video or audio record of the show. Equity rules are fairly stringent on points like this so shows such as these will have to live on in memory.

BTW, Anthony's partner in Bicycle is Cristiane Young. That number has been a favorite of all the audiences.

DR Jennifer, you are correct, I was quite happy with Tom's win...of everyone who was playing this season I think he was most deserving...well, maybe Bobby John would be just as deserving.

The finale was different, that is for sure...I think that if Ian had told Tom to take him to the end, Tom would have....but Tom's taking Katie assured him a win, and since Ian told him to take Katie he made the move that would help him win.

JMK, it's Patricia Cornwell and her book is PORTRAIT OF A KILLER, where she says artist,Walter Sickert, is the killer.  I haven't read her book yet, so I don't know what new evidence she may or may not bring to her case, but it is hardly the first time Sickert has been bandied about as the Ripper...notably JACK THE RIPPER: THE FINAL SOLUTION by Stephen Knight in 1976 and SICKERT & THE RIPPER CRIMES by Jean Overton Fuller in 1990.  In JACK THE RIPPER: A to Z, by three noted Ripperologists, Paul Begg, Martin Fido, and Kenneth Skinner (with a foreword by another, Donald Rumbelow) states that most of the evidence and stories suggesting Sickert remain uncorrobated and extreme caution should be used in considering him the killer.  Maybe Cornwell's come up with something new...but it seems to me, I remember some skepticism when the book first came out.

Wow!  What did you think Ian was "intending" when he spoke to Katie and Jenn about voting Tom out?  Does that sound like someone who was going to "honor" an agreement?.

I think Ian was considering voting out Tom.  But I don't think he was necessarily going to do it.  But IMO that doesn't matter.  It doesn't matter whether Ian honored his end of the agreement.  Tom should have honored his end (since he had no proof that Ian was definitely going to vote him out).

Tom used Ian's "betrayal" as an excuse.  He should have kept his word and kept Ian.  It doesn't matter what someone else does. Tom was responsible for himself and should have kept his word.  To me that is what would have made him stand apart from the rest.  IT shouldn't matter if others around you are honorable, YOU SHOULD KEEP YOUR WORD.

Quote
Ian made his own bed....he outsmarted himself.  Tom reacted the right way.  Katie should have voted for Ian as well.

I totally disagree.  If Katie had betrayed her friend after he bawled on the beach for her (and gave up the million) i would have been even more disgusted with her than i was.  At least she kept to her word.

Quote
Tom confronted Ian who confessed.   Did that mean nothing to you?.

I did not hear ian confess.

Quote
Tom played the game the best...and he played it with honor.  Even Greg, Katie and Jenn were planning to vote out Tom when they were on the yacht..

It cracks me up that tom apologized to gregg for being mislead by ian (that gregg was gonna vote tom out). Unless the editing was misrepresenting the situation i agree, gregg was planning to vote tom out. Although by gregg's questioning he acted like tom betrayed him.

In fact why is everyone mad that ian was perhaps gonna flip, since katie was flipping back and forth.

I know I should probably like tom, but i just don't.  And I was not at all impressed with ian trying to get tom's respect back by giving up the million.  I would have been more impressed if ian had won the challenge and given his immunity to tom.

Quote
Greg and Ian, both, were plotting to dishonor their agreement with Tom before Tom found them out.

I definitely think Gregg was planning to vote out tom (although he acted like he wasn't in final questioning).  And I am 50-50 on whether ian would have done it.

It made me slightly sick to hear katie say in the finals that she had stuck to her alliance (um, she was wanting the all-girl alliance to vote out BOTH TOM AND IAN).

Also i didn't like tom saying how he had stuck to his original alliance (um no, he tried to vote out ian). Very hypocritical on both their parts.

Btw, did you guys hear tom and katie's answers to coby's final question. I heard the question. But here they just jumped right to gregg's question. :(

DRJMK, the author is Patricia Cornwell, and her book is a ripoff of Stephen Knight's JACK THE RIPPER: THE FINAL SOLUTION, which I read around 1980, claiming the artist Walter Sickert was part of a royalist plot to silence a group of women involved in a marriage and child between Prince Eddy and Annie Cook.  The theory was disproven until Ms Cornwell dug him up.  Interestingly, her bibiolgraphy makes no mention of the Stephen Knight book.  Hmmm . . . I guess if she never knew of Stephen Knight's book, she couldn't be accused of plagiarism, could she?

BK, i'm in the process of planning a baby shower.  Were there any games at the party that were really good?

(anyone else can answer too).

I went to one recently where we played 'Baby Bingo"  Everyone was given a bingo card but instead of numbers it had  items that might be expected as gifts ie.: bibs, stroller, highchair, rattle, gift certificate, etc etc etc ( a  King & I reference!)  This kept everyone in the room during the present opening  and spurred lots of shouts of  "Open mine next!!"

As the presents were opened everyone marked their cards and whoever got bingo won a prize.

There was also another game but you have to get all the guests to participate ahead of time so its more difficult to arrange.  You get everyone who is coming to the shower to give you a picture of themselves as a baby  (under 2) and then you display them all with numbers under the pictures and everyone must guess who became who.  We did this one right at the beginning and it was a great icebreaker for all the people who didn't know each other.  Everyone was introducing themselves so they could peer at each other's eyes to try and get a clue!!

You apparently missed this pre-immunity challenge of the "final four" statement from Ian (verbatim):

"This is the moment that I've been waiting for the entire game, [if] I win the challenge, Tom goes home, [if] I don't win the challenge [then] Tom's all of the sudden my best friend again," Ian explained in confessional."

As for not having "proof" that Ian was going to flip, what on earth do you call Ian's admission to Tom of what he and Katie and Jenn were planning?

Ian was "playing" Tom and got caught.  To have blithely ignored that and continued carrying Ian would have made Tom seem very foolish.  The honor of the agreement was violated -- and nullified -- by Ian.  That's what he attempted to reclaimin the final challenge.

As Pogue is a fan of English crime history, I'm a fan of LA crime history and have many tomes on the subject.  I really like James Ellroy's My Dark Places, about the killing of his mother.  And, of course, I have several books on the Black Dahlia killing.  I also have a book that goes into several of the most notorious LA killings.

BK, have you read BLACK DAHLIA AVENGER, by the ex-LA cop who claims his dad was the the Black Dahlia murderer.

Been doing a little research on the Cornwell book.  It, her theories, and her methodology all seem to receive ample doses of contempt.  Seems like a lot of supposition and circumstantial stuff without much credibility or backing up of her facts.

As elmore says, the theory is ancient, largely discredited, and no where in her bibliography does she mention the Stephen Knight book or Fuller book.  Just one of many problems is that Sickert seems to have been in France when some of the murders took place.

I also have another book that connects Sickert to the killings that was written in 1991, called The Ripper & The Royals with a preface by Joseph Sickert, Walter Sickert's son...whose varying and changing accounts of his father's connections to the murders have long been discredited by Begg, Fido, et al.

German Spam Update....

First you take some sauerkraut, then some mustard...

UGH!  That's not even groan-worthy.

Seriously...

For those on AOL - and maybe even Yahoo - after comparing some notes with some other friends, it appears all the German spam may have confused the spam filters so much that they started filtering out non-spam e-mails - even stuff from people in your address book.

I got some e-mails this morning from people asking if I had gotten their e-mails this past weekend.  I hadn't, so I checked my Spam Folder (Keyword: Spam Folder) on AOL, and, lo and behold, there were about five legitimate e-mails, all from people on my "approved" list.  So...  Then I went ahead and followed up with some people I had sent e-mails to over the past few days who I had not received responses from...  Their spam filters were also working a little too efficiently this past weekend due to the deluge of German spam.  So...

Check you spam folders!

Humor as Dry as the Sahara Department:  For those of you who are Christopher Guest fans, I highly recommend a film in the same vein as his, Incident at Loch Ness, starring the extremely unlikely to be funny (yet amazingly hilarious) Werner Herzog.  We're about halfway through the film and a quarter way through the commentary (which is hysterical if you're in the right mood).  A very, very funny film for those who don't need to be hit over the head with humor.

I grew up in a Sears family (my Dad managed the downtown SLC and Seattle stores at various points of his career).  Famous family anecdote:  when my sister was 2 or 3, someone walked up to her and said "Where did you get those big blue eyes?"  And she responded, "At Sears Roebuck and Company."   ;D

I liked LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY very much. I will miss it.

People makes jokes about the L&O franchise, but the fact is that all of the shows are radically different from each other. The original is the only one that plays detective in the first half and is a courtroom drama in the second half. All of the others are either all detection (CRMINAL INTENT), about 80% detection and 20% courtroom (SVU) or mostly courtroom/lawyer oriented (TBJ).

It's the CSIs that are virtual clones of each other in terms of show procedure. The only things that make those shows different are locales and actors, but the case investigations and motifs used to display the crime, etc. are identical.

Because I was pretty much in a coma at the end of last semester, this semester's end-of-the-semester poem will be for the whole year. So here it is, now that I've finally gotten around to finishing it:

My head aches and a drowsy numbness pains
my sense as though of Cherry Coke I had run out,
for all semester long, they’ve cluttered up my brains
with stuff I do not give a flying fig about.
My Hamlet midterm paper got full credit-
the fourth time that on Hamlet I have had to write,
and got four As, although I’ve never read it-
an A for seven pages scribbled overnight.
I’d several profs who filled me up with dread,
like boring Dr. C. who talks and talks and talks,
but never has a single thing he said,
or Dr. H., who always wore surrealist socks.
Another prof was flaunting smut as true art,
another had me climbing countless steps, enough
to get to the Fifth Floor to see Ms. Laws,
where reason plays no part and rhyme does not come through.
Some things to me will still remain a mystery,
like what the heck is rhetoric, and what’s it for?
And why those groupies so obsessed with history
take every class that’s offered by Ms. R., that bore.
F. Scott Fitzgerald somehow has to do
with old dead English monarchs of the Stuart line,
with feminists from African lands too,
and any other topic that they could assign.
To all my teachers who looked at my fun askance,
I have one final parting thought: Underpants!

DR's Jane & Jose - funny you both should mention Electrolux.  One of my errands today was to go to the local (Dayton) vacuum cleaner store to get bags for the one we bought there a couple of years ago.  I was a little unsure, standing in front of a machine that looked like ours, but had a different name.  The guy who helped me said it was called "Oxygen" when we bought it, now it's "Oxygen by Eureka," and the new models will just say "Electrolux."  I said, "That's what my mom's sweeper said when I was a little girl!"  Guess if you wait long enough, everything comes back in style.

One thing I'm curious about is how to know who did which shirt?

DR RonP, we will have to agree to disagree.  Yes I watched the show.  But I don't find the article that you quoted to be completely accurate.  For example Ian did not admit to tom that he was planning to vote him off.  He said that it would have been a tough call (that comment was what made tom originally mad).

The article said:
The comment caused Tom to approach Jennifer, who confirmed Tom's fears -- that had Tom failed to win the day's Immunity Challenge, Ian had agreed to join with Katie and Jennifer in voting Tom off at the upcoming Tribal Council. Tom confronted Ian about his comment, after which Ian confirmed Jennifer's claims that he'd planned to vote Tom out, but prefaced it with a note that "I'm playing the game just like everyone else."

I totally disagree that Ian admitted he planned to vote tom out (or that he said anything like that). Because if that were true then why was tom begging ian to come clean right up until the end.

All Ian said was that he had had that discussion with jen and katie.  But he claimed to tom that he never would have done it.

You can think Tom is the hero.  But don't dismiss my opinion.  I think Tom should have honored his word regardless of whether he believed ian might have betrayed him.  If he knew for sure, that would be one thing. But ian said he wouldn't have done it.

I still maintain ian should never have let tom win the final immunity. Tom would never have done that for him.

Danise, no...pre-movie jitters.  By the time something has come out I have at least seen it and sometimes I've seen it many times.  I pretty much know by then what kind of film has been made out of the script and whether it is good or not and whether it will do well or not.

You sometimes just want to go hide, because you just can't go around flinging the script at people, saying:  "It's not my fault!  Read the script! You'll see!"

Title: Re:YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW

DR Jennifer.  I wholeheartedly agree to disagree with all your views on the subject of honor in regards to "Survivor: Palau."  What I get from your argument is that you think Tom should have acted "stupidly" so the backstabbing Ian could advance and win.

Tom wasn't begging Ian for anything.  He was demanding that Ian be a man and admit what everyone else knew to be true.  When Ian made his deal with Tom in the final challenge, it was an act of atonement for dishonoring the agreement.

The "clue" to his guilt was that Ian would not DENY having an agreement with Jenn and Katie.  He would not answer Tom directly whether or not he would have voted Tom out.  If he had said yes, the truth would have been out, and if he had said no, Jen and Katie would have turned on him for being a liar.

Tom's logic was perfectly understandable.  If Ian intended to be honorable, he'd have had no trouble making a decision about how.  When Tom heard him say that, he realized that Ian was not totally committed to his word.  According to Tom, up to that moment, none of his actions had been difficult.  But Ian said it would have been difficult for him.

All Ian did was "tap dance" around the truth, hoping it would go away.  Tom demanded he come clean and Ian just stammered.  He never denied anything, and that's as good an admission as anyone should need.

 ;D

The interesting thing about cutting a four hour time slot to three is that the movie itself ends up being less than two hours because there are twenty-four minutes of commecials (sometimes more) per hour.  That is the most shocking thing about television today.  Pretty soon a half-hour show will run eighteen minutes.

Ginny spring, when our world turns green, is always a pretty time here.

MBarnum I believe you mentioned a visit to your mother this spring.  I just hope it isn’t the last weekend in June, or when we finally visit Keith’s mother.

The female turkeys run (like quail) and then fly away, but the males just move away from us.  The cars don’t seem to bother them and sometimes we have to wait while slowly leave the driveway.   On several occasions they have kept Keith company while he worked in the vegetable garden, not too close but close enough.  Unfortunately we never have the camera at the right times.

It was interesting to be looking at photos inside the Ambassador Hotel where RFK got shot, at the same time I'm reading about little Benjamin Kritzer going to prom there in KRITZER TIME.

Anyways, the site is called findadeath.com, and it is a bit ghoulish, but yet not mean-spirited, and I've seen a few photos on there from Studio City and thereabouts. Pretty fascinating.

According to that site, the destruction of the Ambassador is a fait accompli. They are building a school there.
To which, I think it was Diane Keaton, made an eloquent argument to the point of, "Kids could study history in RFK's final footsteps, study language arts where F. Scott Fitzgerald devised some of his great work, music in The Coconut Grove, etc." In other words, why not make the Ambassador into a school rather than tear it down?

We have been watching the turkeys-all seven of them-and the squirrel that likes to follow them around.  ;D

Oh, how I LONGED for DR Jose tonight. The music director was not there, and a substitute pianist was there who was a terrible sight reader. Plus, the keys for the LA CAGE songs are mostly 5 flats or 5 sharps, and her fingers were stumbling all over the place. I was totally dissatisfied with both of my first act songs tonight. (We only ran Act I).

For those who perform, don't you despise rehearsals that you feel you've taken a couple of steps backward instead of progressing forward toward being performance-ready. That's exactly how I felt tonight.

Also, the actor playing Jacob was not there tonight also causing me a somewhat major bit of frustration.

It's going to get warmer and more humid the rest of the week with thundershowers likely some of those days. I HATED to see this marvelously bright but cool day come to an end. This is the type of weather I could enjoy year-round.

Well....I enjoyed HERCULES tonight on NBC.  Some very good actors...a couple who weren't as good, but okay.  It looked great and had a nice musical score.   AND all the villians got great comeuppances!  Very satisfying...and it all came down to two arrows aimed at each other....very satisfying.  I do hope the four hour version is run on SCI FI or some other channel, but I liked it.  Sean Astin had some especially good dialog.

Rodzinski, Thanks for David's review.  Back in January I had a great dinner with him and another TV reviewer and Harlan Ellison.  They are all pals and now I like to think they're my pals also.  So David got all the stories behind Herc.  Great guy!

I went with Everybody Loves Raymond, which went out in a classy way.  No deaths or births or characters moving away or saying good-bye.  Just a typical funny episode with one very touching moment.  I'm going to miss this show very much.

I'm back from a lovely dinner with Mr. Nick Redman and Julie Kirgo.  What fun we all had.  We laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more we laughed again.  Nick loved his birthday/Christmas present - the new huge The Stanley Kubrick Archives book.  And I got to feel very nice because Miss Julie Kirgo had read my new tome and really loved it.  I have TIVOd Hercules and shall start watching it a bit later this evening, or I may save it for one viewing tomorrow evening.

Everyone must be off watching Hercules, which is the ONLY excuse we will be accepting.

In the meantime, here is a lovely photograph of the lovely Nick Redman and Julie Kirgo having a lovely time.

Watched Hercules and enjoyed it. I hope to see the four hour version sometime though. It didn't help knowing that it had been trimmed down to fit in the time slot. The one piece of CGI that really made me cringe was when the centaur was running. I didn't think that was done well at all. I have been hearing good reviews elsewhere. Just imagine what people would be saying if they hadn't trimmed it down to the 3 hour time slot! :D

I've watched the first hour.  After having discussed this with Pogue the other night. I think one really needs to have it put back to its full length - the beginning was too confusing.  I also thought the CGI was awful.  Pogue's writing comes shining through, despite Roger Young's pedestrian and really poor direction and staging, and some actors who simply don't have the chops for this sort of dialogue.

The score seems quite okay to me.  I do wonder if the DVD will be widescreen - it doesn't look like it was shot that way to my eye, so it will be interesting to see which ratio the DVD is in.

If only this could have been directed by an Anthony Mann or a Nick Ray or someone who knows what epic means - with Pogue's script, no network interference (cutting something down for no reason), and a real director, well, that would be the berries.  We do love us our Leelee Sobieski, though.
