Title: MISE EN SCENE
Post by: bk on May 27, 2004, 12:00:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes (and if you haven't you will, of course, be clueless as to their title), you know the routine, the routine knows you, and now all that's left to do is post and then post more.  To it, I say.

Is THE STING a caper film? If it is, I like it. Others have been mentioned by bk - TOPKAPI, BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET (which I haven't seen in forever - but I liked it forever ago).
I also like lox and cream cheese on a bagel with capers.

My favourite caper movie is "The Lavender Hill Mob". I am fond of the other ones mentioned above - "The Sting" is such a great movie. I remember the first version (I assume it was the first!) of "The Thomas Crown Affair" as being enjoyable too.

Good morning, all!  First of all, let's set up the social calendar for DR PennyO's date next week:  Tuesday, June 1,  Joe Allen, 326 West 46th Street, 5:30 pm.

DRNoel, I didn't mean to exclude you, your lovely wife, or any other DRs, and I hope you and any other East Coast DRs can join us.  As my Dear Friend BK says, be there or be square.

TOD:  Both "Ocean's 11," "Topkapi," and the first "Thomas Crown Affair."

Okay, Mr. Smarty Pants, Mr. Film Buff, Mr. Oh-So-Mise-en-Scène, here's trivia for you:

What Fritz Lang film is based on an Esperanto novel?  That's right, one film by the Fritz himself is based on a novel written in Esperanto which is sitting on mine very own book shelf in a box somewhere in a stack of boxes in the hallway of my home.  And is still in print, I believe.

Hint, hint:  the novel is science fiction, but has since become, for better or for worse, reality.

Virgina Capers Films:  The Great White Hope; Howard the Duck; Support Your Local Gunfighter; Lady Sings the Blues; What's Love Got to Do with It?; Ferris Bueller's Day Off...

Oh, you meant caper films.  Well in that case, as Emily Littella (and not Rosanne Rosannadanna, as someone here said recently) was fond of saying, never mind.

I've never seen the original Thomas Crown Affair, but rather enjoyed the remake, despite its excesses.  "Monet's lost masterpiece 'Dogs at Cards'" indeed!  But then, I'm a sucker for anything with Pierce Brosnan.

I've always liked capers in my Beefsteak Tartar and sometimes in a salad.  But I don't think anyone has ever made a movie about it.

Hmmmmmmmmm....glad Juliana got the Sony Camera!  ;D

Will the pictures be here or in her Journal thread?

Caper films?

ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW is a favorite, THE KILLERS, hmmmmmmmmm.....I like some of the others mentioned as well.  I will have to give this more thought!

Caper movies? Topkapi, Lavender Hill Mob, (the original) Ladykillers, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Great Muppet Caper (Kermit to Miss Piggy: "You're hamming it up"), and To Catch a Thief.

And Panni (lox and cream cheese), WEL (Virginia Capers), and TCB (Wiener Schnitzel), thanks for the morning laughs.

Dan-in-Toronto, that's WFO to you. Both are Williams (WEL AND WFO) but Mr. Orr is at work already making calculations for unsuspecting math students while Mr. Lurie is probably partaking of breakfast before his trip to the Candy Factory.

Glad to hear that our Tuesday date is confirmed. I look forward to meeting new Dear Readers (and old DRs who happen to be there as well). Anthony will not be with me as he takes a dance class on Tuesday early evening.

I now must find a copy of Jewish Thighs on Broadway. Or at least, as DR Jason mentioned, find my copy of A Doll's Life.

I forgot about The Great Muppet Caper. Love it. Don't actually know many other caper movies, though the ones that have been mentioned ring a bell. I should watch The Lavender Hill Mob. I've heard so many good things about it.

Ben,

As someone would say, spoo si oops. And while Mr. O is calculating (single entendre), Mr. L is breakfasting, and I'm switching their names - guess what I'm up to? Heading out to check some important revisions. Just don't tell the publisher that my Williams are completely mixed up.

With so many depressing memories yesterday, I was glad when Panni suggested a change of topic: the first time you tasted marzipan.

The first time was a summer's day, about five years ago, in a cabin in the woods in Western Pennsylvania.  We found a radio station on a really old receiver.  The last thing we wanted to hear was news, but they broke the music to announce Princess Diana was in a car crash.  Then they broke again to say she'd died.

The next time I tasted marzipan was the day that good-looking Kennedy kid crashed his plane.  For many of us heredity and Camelot lovers, the fact that his father had been a great president, one uncle had been my favorite presidential candidate ever, and another uncle has his name on more good legislation than anyone . . . well, we kind of always believed someday he might emerge as a great politician.  Now we'll never know (ooh, a Destry Rides Again reference).

I haven't eaten marzipan since.

The Hot Rock.  Paul Sand and Zero Mostel ... now there's a family.

I definitely think THE STING counts as a caper film because it was the first one that sprang to my mind when I read the topic of the day. Not a big fan of TOPKAPI (too long and leisurely paced for me). I've never seen RIFIFI but want to as its the debatable father of heist movies and especially the father of TOPKAPI.

I've never seen either version of THE ITALIAN JOB, but I understand they're both very good.

I did like HEIST and even more THE SCORE both from a couple of years ago with brilliant casts. Other better than average caper movies are THE HOT ROCK and THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (both versions, in some ways quite different from each other).

I do think GAMBIT is one of those underappreciated gems that will one day get rediscovered. I mentioned as much at one point in yesterday's posts talking about movies that surprisingly change directions on the audience.

Capers?  Really, caper films as the TOD?  How strange!  Capers are those little buds from a Mediterranean shrub, which are usually cured in brine and make dishes like Chicken Picatta interesting.  I didn't know they made films about capers.

Next, you'll be telling me they're making a film about Chinese Five Spice Powder!  (The mise en scene would be tolerable, but the mise en place would be spectacular!)

I have to say that the better of the two finalists won AMERICAN IDOL last night. That's not to denegrate Diana's accomplishments. To have that kind of voice and poise at 16 is pretty remarkable. Give her a few more years of seasoning, and she should be an awesome entertainer.

Fantasia is a totally unique talent, and I'll look at where she goes with her fame with great interest. I hope she'll be able to handle it.

I caught the show last night in bits and pieces, and some other comments.

Jasmine's rendition of "Midnight Train to Georgia" was hideous from the first note. Totally flat and embarrassing. She never sang THAT badly throughout an entire song before, but she was simply ghastly.

Ruben Studdard's solo was also abysmal. Something has happened to his voice in the year since his win as it lacked tone, authority, and control. He's carrying a good bit of extra weight, of course, which has to affect his breathing, and I found the whole song sadly lacking

How great to see John Stevens, Jon Peter Lewis, and Matthew Rogers back and in their usual form. I was glad John got a solo moment in the big band section, and he did it well. I always thought Matt Rogers had a lot of stage presence. JPL is just too cute for words.

Time to get ready for work.  Short day today, but I've got salads to start on when I get home.

Oh, DR Jose, I posted a question to Alton over at eGullet, on how he'd alter his cole slaw recipe, adding the pineapple that der B's daughter insists on including.  He answered!  (He suggested substituting pineapple juice for the pickle juice in the dressing, then loading in the pineapple chunks.  Works for me!)

Bonjour, tout le monde! Ca va? Sorry...BK got me in a French mood with all this talk of mise en scene.

We had some wonderful posts yesterday. I just wanted to say that. Thank you all for sharing.

I don't think I know from "caper" films. From the titles listed, it would seem that I've seen a couple of them--THE ITALIAN JOB, THE STING and THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR all ring a bell. Otherwise, the only capers I know about are the little round things that I sometimes find in my fettucine.

I don't know why, but I have "Hey...did you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world" running through my head right now and it's driving me mad.

Tonight I'm seeing CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. One of the people I'm going with is friends with Ms. Pinkins, so maybe we'll go backstage after the show. After tonight, the only Tony-nominated show for Best Musical that I will not have seen is AVENUE Q. I hope to remedy that soon, as I think the original company will start to disband in the next few months--their contracts have nearly expired. The only revival I haven't seen yet is, of course, ASSASSINS...the one I really want to see. I will hopefully see that one soon, too, before Mr. Kudisch leaves the show. Oh! You know what--I lied. I didn't get to see BIG RIVER because I was in Pennsylvania. Damn Bucks County Playhouse and all their treachery! Maybe I'll try to catch the tour if it plays New Jersey or Connecticut.

Tomorrow I see GYPSY again. Third time. Saturday matinee is actually still a toss-up. We may be seeing MILLIE (I've not seen it since previews, let alone with Susan Egan and Dixie Carter) or we may be seeing FIDDLER. Again. Third time. Oy vey. Saturday night we're visiting with Ms. Shirley Jones and Mr. Patrick Cassidy at 42nd STREET (my first time seeing that--can you imagine?) and Sunday afternoon we're seeing the closing performance of GYPSY. I've never been to a closing performance before. Should prove to be exciting.

Speaking of exciting--can't wait for Tuesday's shindig at Joe Allen...!

The Hot Rock

Small Time Crooks

All comedies--I can't think of any non-comedic caper flciks that I liked at the mo'.

Living on the road has so many advantages: for one, I was at the Christmas partay at BK's, and met Panni and Rachel, The Pogues, Jay and various DR's... I met the dear Delawares - Woody and Der Brucer while I was in Bristol for my show in Feb... and now I'll meet a goodly number of the NY HHW contingent. I would certainly come to a Portland gathering, if I were in the neighborhood... Hey, then let's all go to Australia!

Okay, enough of this idle blather. Let's have a blast of caffeine and get to the serious blather. More later.

Good Morning.

Noel - Your marzipan post gave me the first laugh of the day.

SMALL TOWN CROOKS sprang to mind as I was walking this morning. Add to earlier list. As for THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (the original) - the only thing I remember plot-wise of the film is that wildly romantic one minute (or more) kiss between Steve and Faye with the camera making orgiastic swirls around them. I think I need a cigarette! (And I don't even smoke.) (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0304/liebe/love-smiley-037.gif)

I'm not a fan of the slaw myself, but my dad LOVES the stuff and apparently he's makes some of the best slaw in Louisville. He doesn't include pickles or pineapples.

My grandmother makes this marshmallow/pineapple concoction that is really tasty. I don't know exactly what's in it, but she uses the mini marshmallows and pineapple chunks and I think Cool Whip or Marshmallow Fluff. It's fantabulous, though I usually end up picking out the pineapple after a while.

"American Idol" -- yep, they got it right.  And it's so much MORE right than Kelly Clarkson and Ruben Studdard.

Ruben needs some help -- maybe Dr. Phil could give him the extreme diet challenge.

As bad as I felt when Jennifer was ousted from the competition, I was vividly reminded last night of what I thought was a major problem with her -- I couldn't understand a word she sang.

And I think it's very odd....that song called "I Believe"  sounds vastly different when Fantasia sings it than when Diana sings it.  Diana sings it as a belting song...and with Fantasia, it's a personal anthem.  It "sounds" different.  I respond to it differently.

I wonder what Diana would have sung had she won, since she'd already sung "I Believe" earlier in the show.

Makes you wonder.....whether or not.....or....hmmmm....I won't go there.

RE: American Idol

I just made the same comment to someone else.  How bizarre that they had Diana sing the winner's song, "I believe" earlier in the show.  Wouldn't it have seemed odd to have her sing it twice?

I wonder if that in itself clued her in to her fate.

One of these days I must get a digital camera. Right after I get a new DVD player.  Speaking of which... I always tape my story meetings so that I don't have to be furiously making notes as we talk. Yesterday I had a VERY long, complex meeting. As I was setting out to go, I put a fresh tape in my little recorder. When I tested it, it sounded like The Chipmunks. I changed batteries, but still Alvin. So, I ran to Staples, found a regular recorder (not the microtape kind) - which they said they didn't have - but, of course, they did, set it up and rushed to the meeting. Technology! Sheeesh.

If I recall correctly, Justin sang "A Moment Like This" at the top of the finale show during the first season. Kelly sang "Before Your Love," and then Justin sang it, and then Kelly sang "A Moment Like This" when she won.

It's kind of like when Mary Tyler Moore presented the Tony for Best Musical--you knew when she walked out on that stage that MILLIE was going to win for Best Musical.

This sounds like Ambrosia salad, which, it seems, that everyone makes differently.  My sister adds cubes of cream cheese and canned peach chunks  to the mix.  Unfortunately, it tends to come out a light orangey color and with all the various chunks in it it sort of looks like--er, well, I think you get the picture...

Da da da dada da da da da,
Dada, da da da da.
Billy, don't be a hero,
Come back to me...

DR PennyO I forgot that you reside in the Pacific Northwest...you are here...you are there...you are everywhere! And you must be at the HHW get together of course!

That's the stuff. I've never heard of putting peaches in it. In fact, that kind of makes me want to vomit on the floor.

I just got out of a 3-3/4 hour meeting and we only had one 10-minute break!  Sheesh!  Anyway, I'm off to lunch.  Just had to share.

Jed, as I said, Horizons is the next generation of Dynix.  If we go with them (I just found out), then we don't have to go out for bids, we don't have to do a Request For Proposal.  It'll just be an "upgrade" and save lots of money on the bids and RFPs.  I know that we (well, I) can adjust to whatever they decide.  I just hope that it is all for the best (a Candide and Godspell reference).

This mini-frenzy brought to you by my taking a break in packing.

With the school year coming to an end (meaning my employment as a substitute teacher ends with it), and because I have yet to land a job on the west side of the state, I'll be moving back home for a little while.  Thought I was out of there 4 years ago, but kinda makes sense to avoid paying rent while unemployed, ya know. :D  Hopefully, I'll find gainful employment in the Seattle/Tacoma area soon, and won't have to be back down in Ellensburg for long.

One real advantage to living as bare bones as I do... packing an apartment takes no time at all!

Also news of casting for Dracula, the Musical.

http://www.playbill.com/news/article/86416.html

Well, I was about ready to pass on the whole, Dracula, The Musical, until I got to the name Chuck Wagner.  Wow! What a beautiful man.  He was wonderful, not only as the blonde Prince in Into the Woods, but he made a very sexy Beast in Beauty and the Beast.  Now I have to try and figure out whether or not this show will be a hit.  If not, I guess I will have to hitchhike to New York this summer.

Memorial Day: Just going out to Long Island to Anthony's parents where we will do little or nothing. We may watch the Elaine Strictch HBO broadcast or we may tape it for later viewing. We will be going to a BBQ on Sunday. I will most likely be E&T for the entire weekend. I will pop in when I get a chance but I will have loads of reading to do on Tuesday morning when I return to the office.

I thought the exact same thing last night. When Diana started "I Believe," I felt for sure she had lost, and I was right. Memorial Day weekend - Moving.  Will be E&T all weekend as a result.  Most likely take a big ol' carload of stuff down tomorrow night (or early Saturday morning), then my sister will be helping me on a couple trips with my dad's pickup for the furniture on Saturday, and Sunday I'll be cleaning and grabbing any last few little items left around.

Due to the holiday, I won't be able to get my internet connection hooked up down there until Tuesday.  It makes absolutely no sense to me, but none of the big national internet companies have local dial-up numbers for Ellensburg (a town of over 15,000 and home of a state university), while many smaller rural towns on this side of the state do have local numbers.  Oh well, guess I'll be paying a bit more for a local provider while I'm there.

Oh, forgot to mention why that won't be done until Tuesday... The fershluganah local dial-up providers down there don't allow you to sign up for service online, but rather I have to go in to their office to set things up.

One of my favorite caper movies is called The Silent Partner, which has also been released under the title Think of a Number.  It stars Elliot Gould and Christopher Plummer.  Plummer is a bank robber, and Gould gets wind of his intention to rob the bank he's working at.  And when the robbery goes down, Plummer gets away, but Gould snatches the loot...and understandably, this makes Plummer very, very angry...and that's only the first twenty minutes of the movie.

There's a Michael Caine movie called The Silver Bears that I remember enjoying an awful lot, too.  And Burt Reynolds as an aging safecracker in the movie Breaking In really worked for me.

I watched The Testament of Dr. Mabuse this weekend, and it was a joy to behold.  I remember seeing the shortened version on AMC or TCM years and years ago, and having to give up because it didn't make a lick of sense.  Now that it's 99 44/100% restored, it actually makes quite a bit of sense, and is a genuine nail-biter.

It also makes me want to watch M again.

And Hannibal Lecter isn't nearly as cool as Dr. Mabuse, says I, nor half as scary.

Did anyone else get the latest wave of Disney Treasures deeveedees?  I've been wading through them for the last few days, and they're fabulous!

A word of advice, though...if you're gonna pick these up, do it now.  I didn't pick up the first volume of Mickey Mouse in Living Color, and paid close to a hundred bucks for it on eBay recently.  I picked up two copies of all four of these releases, and intend to put 'em up on eBay in a few years.

Which brings up another subject, even though it's not Ask BK (or the Dear Readers in general) Day: do you ever buy anything specifically to sell on eBay?  I know I certainly have...

Lamb Chop's Play Along!

Before I read the rest of the posts, I must respond to this...
(Before I do THAT - it's nice to be off the spawn of the devil hook!)

To my point - Do not - I repeat - DO NOT - get us singing Lamb Chop's "The song that never ends..."
My Dear Daughter was a regular on that show for a season when she was 8 or 9 - and I heard that song a LOT. And I NEVER want to hear it again.
This is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on my friends.
Somebody started singing it not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because
this is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on my friends.
Somebody started singing it not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because
this is the song that never ends.

Robin - I like THE SILENT PARTNER, too. Except for the extremely gory offing of one of the leading characters. This person (I don't want to be a spoiler) was in a movie I later did for the CBC. It was a cursed production - one of the bit players, a very sweet young woman, was murdered during the shoot; there was a strike mid-shoot, so we had to "adjourn" for some months; film was lost by a messenger on the way to the lab, etc. I blame it all on the bad vibes from that gory scene in SILENT PARTNER.

Good Afternoon!

Well, I slept in until about 11:00, and since I had a matinee at 1:00.. So...

"Home" between shows... I should have napped.. I guess.. In any case...

I'm a big fan of marzipan.  I usually stock up around Christmas time.  The World Market stores carry some pretty good stuff and pretty good prices.  Although I like the "plain", some of the flavored ones are quite good.  I've become a fan of the armagnac ones.  -And chocolate-covered pineapple ones.

And a few weeks ago, the french horn player brought in little boxes of "Mozart" chocolates for everyone.  Soooo good.. and they have marzipan in them!

Topic of the day:  I'll have to think some more about this one...  The only title that comes to my mind is "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World" - and that's kind of stretching it.  -And was that enough "Mad's"?

Well, maybe I can sneak in a few winks before heading back in...

Hmmm...

First I was afraid
I was petrified
Kept thinking I could never live
Without you by my side
But then I spent so many nights
Just thinking how you did me wrong
And I grew strong
And I learned how to get along

And now you're back
From outer space...

I want to put an interesting topic on the table, then must get back to work... Just read that Gwyneth Paltrow is going to play Marlene Dietrich in a biopic. In the article it said that Louis Malle was developing a Dietrich bio to star Uma Thurman. That project died with Malle, (John Guare was to have written it.) So - who do you think would make a better screen Dietrich -- Gwyneth or Una (or someone else of your choice)? And - do you think it's possible to portray someone as iconic? (AND how can you possibly take it seriously and not think of Madeline Kahn as you watch?)

If they have to go with a "name" as the star, I'd go with Uma.  Gwyneth seems (and it's just my perception) to be too "sweet."  I don't know if she could really have an edge that Dietrich seemed to have (to me).

I have a concert video, Ute Lemper's "Illusions (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/6302653061/qid%3D1085696204/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-6748481-5390563)" (filmed, but with an audience) that's a tribute to Edith Piaf and Marlene Dietrich.  She was wonderful and could do the back-of-the-throat rolling Rs that Gwyneth might not be able to do.

Serves me right. Can't get the Pitney song out of my head.
"When you're young and so and love as we
And bewildered by the world we see"

Bewilderment is a common state for us seniors. I don't think it is for the young at all.

Hybrid of DR Charles' and DRs Jose's&Panni's recent posts.

My friend Eva's parents (they're Czech) keep Mozart chocolates in their guest bathroom.

And what do you eat/drink in the can?

I second Dear Reader George's choice... I was thinking about Ute Lemper BEFORE reading his post AND she would be good... evn more since she thinks she's Dietrich reincarnated!

"Falling in Lof' agun!"

I would not mind playing Jean (John, to you) Gabin!

"I got a brand new combine harvester" was  a #1 hit for The Wurzels  in the UK.

I've been trying to replace my "Candles in The Rain" record but the CD seems to be not available these day. Always liked the intro verse  to the song and it is never included on other compilations recordings.
"Little sisters of the Sun lit
Candles In The Rain
Fed the world on oats and raisins
Candles In The Rain"
........

I was fond of Melanie's "Psychotherapy"song too and  her version Alexander Beetle".

Pineapple in cole slaw?  Is that any good?  Sounds interesting! :)
Follow your fave cole slaw recipe, or use Alton Brown's. (http://.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_21577,00.html)  Salting the shredded cabbage is important, as it draws out the excess water, which keeps the dressing from becoming a watery mess.  Alton suggested substituting the pickle "juice" with the liquid from the pineapple jar or can, then adding the pineapple chunks as freely as you like.  A little lemon juice counters the sweetness of the pineapple, giving the dish balance.

I just watched the Wade Williams deeveedee of Destination Moon, an early George Pal production.  It was written by Robert A. Heinlein.  And the score by Leith Stevens is top-notch.  So its' pedigree is good.

The first-billed actor is John Archer...obviously inspriational to the folks behind Star Trek: Enterprise.  Another actor looks like a cross between Humphrey Bogart and Gilbert Gottfried, and speaks with a Bronx accent.  I kept expecting Morris Ankrum to show up, but he never did.  Instead, we got an actor who looks and sounds a lot like Ankrum.

Bad print.  Bad sound.

More interesting as an historical artifact than an actual movie.  Still, it's enjoyable for what it is.  And I'm a sucker for any 1950's SF picture.

Fun posts today. :)

SWW I’m very curious to how the cole slaw recipe turns out.

Dear Reader Laura, as usual, a beautiful picture.

MBarnum. I’m finally here.  I need to get back from Europe before I decide when we can go to Portland.  Is that okay? I still like the idea of September Jed.

Jed, GOOD VIBES FOR AN EASY MOVE!

Dan-in-Toronto, candy in the guest bathroom.  At first I laughed at the idea, but on second thought it is very sweet-no pun intended.  Has anyone ever mistaken the candy for fancy soap? :D

Keith and I enjoyed Juliana’s photos.  As Keith commented, she is very lovely.

Keith said his is THE MALTESE FALCON.  Of course it would be a Bogart movie. :)  I don't think of it as a caper movie, but it is listed as one.

I think both actresses are horrible casting ideas. Gwenyth is an especially bad choice. How on earth do these people think of anything so ridiculous?

If you HAVE to do a filmbio on Dietrich (and with all the documentary features of her around, I find it totally unnecessary), hire an unknown German actress.

What a week!  I don't have much to say except that tomorrow is devoted to cleaning and laundry...I have the next four days off!

Question:  What is you favorite cleaning/working music?  I tend to prefer disco, Dorthy Donnagan (a fantastic piano player), and being a child of the 80's, the soundtrack to the movie Footloose.  Any suggestions?

Cheers!  ;D

Quickie Sting story:

Back when I was working at the Alex Theater, oompityfratz years ago and before it was restored as a legit theater, we had a reprise showing of The Sting for a week or so.  I was able to get my parents in, comped.  They hadn't seen a film in a theater for years, and thoroughly enjoyed it.  Glad to say it got them back into the habit of going out together, "dating" as it were.

Speaking of cleaning, or at least chores, tomorrow I really must:

Bake another batch of cookies, this time without nuts...
Do a lot of shopping...
Get the cole slaw made...
Finish the potato salad...
Wash clothes.

And we have to get the "Parking Sticker" for this summer.  Parking in downtown Rehoboth Beach is at a premium, so they charge for parking priveleges.  And then just try finding a parking space!  A few years ago, when we were borrowing our friend's condo once a year, we'd get a temporary "sticker" every year, valid for a week, and switch the sticker between der B's car and his son-in-law's, depending on how much room we needed.  Loan out our sticker these days?  I don't think so!

Home from CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. I think I need to see/hear it again to really be able to absorb all that happened, but I'm pretty certain that it is the most unique, intelligent "musical" running on Broadway right now. I use the term "musical" lightly, as it is really an opera, but I won't quibble about that right now.

Ms. Tonya Pinkins, aside from being a truly delightful woman (we met with her backstage in her dressing room), was a revelation onstage. Her 11 o'clock number was riveting. Now I can see why she's become the Tony darling. She's showing signs of wear and tear, I'm afraid...she cracked several times, which is more a sign of vocal fatigue than bad technique. I think she needs to slow down her schedule and allow herself to rest before the Tony Awards, but she was still marvelous. The young lady who plays her daughter--Anika Noni Rose--was unbelievable. I don't know how old she really is, but she just blew me out of the water. I hope she wins her Tony...she has earned one.

The score is difficult to take in on first hearing, but I know with repeated listenings, it will become one of the most appreciated scores in my collection. The lyrics are VERY poetic and sometimes a bit hard to swallow, but some of them just made your heart break and create a sense of loneliness and dispair that can bring you to tears. During her big number, "Lot's Wife," she gets very angry--raising her fists to God, not understanding why her life is as difficult as it is. It's very "I'm Telling You I'm Not Going." Then there's a 180-degree turn in the music and she sings very quietly,  "Murder me, God. Murder my dreams so that I won't want anymore." Gut-wrenching, I tell you.

So now, having seen it, I have a tough time deciding which show I think should win for Best Musical.

But Rico went a bit too far,
Tony sailed across the bar
and then the punches flew
and chairs were smashed in two.
There was blood and a single gunshot
but just who shot who?
At the Copa!...
