Well, you've read the notes, the notes hopefully had the haha and not the brou, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - right now, I'm thinking I'd like to hurl myself in front of the cows, but that would probably be a lesson in udder futility.
-
And the word of the day is: RODOMONTADE!
-
I gotta tell you.
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
When I feel down one of the only things that will make me feel instantly better is playing Alet's version of "I Gotta Crow" from BK's Peter Pan album and singing at the top of my lungs and doing my own brilliant choreography "flying" and dancing and crowing all over my room.
-
Happy Birthday Rodzinski!!!!!!!!
-
My phone has no messages.
-
And my messages have no phone.
-
I'm exhausted but I don't feel like going to bed. If there were some passing automobiles I could just walk outside and hurl myself in front of one of them. There's no one out there - I can't even hurl myself in front of someone who's walking his dog.
-
A Very Happy Birthday to the Very Errant and Truant Rodzinski!!
-
~~~Vibes for More HaHa for BK!!~~~
-
Topic of the Day: pretty much anything.
;)
-
...anything that I like, that is.
:)
-
Happy Birthday DR Rodzinski.
-
Well, I need to go to sleep and get up early. I have to run some errands during lunch and possibly even before I get to work and then there's a show tonight, so my daytime time is severely limited. Good night, all. 8)
-
Rambling Sid Rumpo (Kenneth "Carry On" Williams) will make me smile very easily.
Cheeriest song at the moment for me is "Sunshine In the Rain" by Swedish pop group "BWO" (Bodies Withour Organs).
Happy pop music will lighten my day.
"Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)" is another great cheer-up song.
-
Sleep well Mr SideShow (NO that is not you DR WishBone)
-
I just hurled myself in front of my computer - didn't really do anything.
-
Welcome eight GUESTS. I've decided that in honor of the one person who mucked up the works, I will never again open my big yap about anything important.
-
And I mean YOU, and you know who YOU are. I have just one word - karma.
-
BK: When you’re in a miserable mood, what foodstuff will make you instantly feel better?
BB: Potato chips, the ultimate comfort food.
BK: What piece of music will instantly cheer you up?
BB: The uber-pop of S Club 7, which was never as popular in this country as it was in their native UK. This is sugar-frosted teen pop that makes ABBA sound like Anthrax.
Have a sample, won't you?
-
Well, my goodness, one of our GUESTS read the above and voila - they disappeared.
-
Oh...and Bruce? This is Todd Rundgren's most popular song. Sound familiar?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfE47sZjgJs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfE47sZjgJs)
(Just shut me up and say yes)
-
I know that song.
-
How did one of our GUESTS turn the Very Good Thing into the Extra Strength Tylenol headache?
I guess that's the question, eh?
-
Are we talking about Evening Primrose, or something else? Sorry to be so dense. I think the column was deliberately vague, though. Or maybe that's just me.
-
I wondered if anybody else has had this experience. On at least a couple of occasions, I have purchased a Broadway OCR album based on a track (or tracks) from the "Lost in Boston" series, only to find that the "cut" songs were superior to the "uncut" ones. Or maybe it was just the productions on LOST IN BOSTON that were superior. Either way, the BOSTON songs set the bar so high that it inevitably led to disappointment. I thought "Come Down from the Tree" (from ONCE ON THIS ISLAND) and every single one of the cut songs from 110 IN THE SHADE were far superior to the tunes that made it. I am sure there are other examples too.
-
And while I've got "cut" songs on my mind, here's a burning question that I'm sure nobody here knows the answer to...but where else am I gonna post it? One of my very favorite songs from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is "Chavala" aka Chava Ballet Sequence, which did not appear on the original Zero Mostel OCR. I didn't get to hear this song until the movie (and subsequent film OCR) was released. It's such a beautiful tearjerker. I am sure it must have been at least recorded for the Broadway version, as several other tracks have turned up as bonus cuts on recent reissues of the Broadway CD ("The Rumor," "Wedding Dance Music"). Why would they record "The Rumor" but not "Chavala"?
Glad I finally got that off my chest.
-
Clearly, we will make it to Page 2 if I have any say in the matter.
-
Looks like I'm finally going to realize my dream of announcing Page 2.
-
PAGE TWO!
HA!
Have a sample, won't you?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POEzC0UMVxM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POEzC0UMVxM)
Oy! I now have a toothache! ;)
But I can't say I wasn't warned!
I humbly have to disagree with you when it comes to 110 In The Shade
Some of the great songs that made it to the original opening night:
Old Maid
Wonderful Music
Simple Little Things
Melisande
Little Red Hat
The Rain Song
Is It Really Me
Glad I finally got that off my chest.
Of course the OC was recorded in the days of the LP and only so much could fit onto an LP.
It was rare the dance music was recorded for a cast album. (West Side Story an exception)
The Rumor is not really a good song. It was a "frontof" song. Sung in front of a curtain while the set was being changed behind it. Just a time filler. The recent revival dropped it in favor of a new song.
Instead of the Rumor I would have liked to have the two reprises of Tradition recorded. (I wonder why the re-release of the soundtrack which included additional music did include these two cuts)
If you don't remember they were used as Tevye decides to allow Tzeitel and Hodel to marry Motel and Perchick.
-
Happy Birthday to another Tom, Nondorf AKA Rodzinski!
-
I'm here all alone.
-
I won't get us to page 3 but I'll post anyway
-
I have a meeting with the Rockefeller Foundation this afternoon. It was the meeting that was postponed from last week. I finished the file so perhaps it was meant to be that the meeting was postponed.
-
Still alone.
-
I need to find a grant or two dealing with Intellectual Property issues. Rockefeller is a funder in that area along with the MacArthur Foundation, they of the Genius Grants.
-
And now at Post 50 I will retire to other work (the bowl perhaps?) and let others move us to Page 3
-
And the word of the day is: RODOMONTADE!
Mario claimed that he could eat a mountain of spaghetti three feet tall in one sitting, but that proved to be just so much RODOMONTADE.
I just hurled myself in front of my computer - didn't really do anything.
Hurling in front of the computer will just get the monitor all icky.
I shall be on my way in a bit for an eye examination and to order NEW EYEGLASSES.....hopefully I will be able to find some frames that look better than what I am wearing for the price I am willing to pay.
Today is also the day that Miss Blue Moon returns to the doctor for the results of some testing and other things.
-
DR TCB is up EARLY.
That was a very cute song, DR BRETTY....and I enjoyed the choreography, I could do most of it by the end of the song, what with the repeats and all, I liked the steps done during the chorus.
I also like that a song about individuality had most of the singers doing the same steps at the same time and everyone dressed they way everyone else in the world dresses.
TOD:
GYPSY - especially the soundtrack....that score has such a great flow on record....or CD.
In what must be a bit of reverse psychology, I find that listening to Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings a few times will lift my mood. But I only use it when I'm really in the dumps.
Gawd, that's a downer piece of music! It's like flying, bird-like, over one of the bleakest, greyest landscapes imaginable on one of the bleakest, greyest, overcast days. Gorgeous, of course, but not in an uplifting way. Which is why it works.
-
Good morning, all! The Toyland work continues, and I have a few errands to run this morning.
I go through horrible depressions which send me to bed to sleep them off. They sometimes last for several days. I haven't had a grisly one since 2004, and that was when the misdiagnosed "boil" turned into something major, and I could not cope with my health, which included a period I was on crutches because of some leg problem and an eventual round - followed by another - of surgery. Along with the health, there were the collapsed bookcases and the lack of work caused by my depression and my health. It was an effort to do or to accomplish anything for several months, so very little wrks for me in getting me out of it.
Today, I have things to accomplish, so I have to get busy. Back laer.
-
Feel-good vibes to Larry!
-
Right now, the pick-me-up song that gets me every time is Donna Summer's recording of "This Time I Know It's For Real" - the excitement of the music gets to me if I'm ever feeling down
-
I'd assume the reason they could add as many extra tracks as they want to the soundtrack CD of the FIDDLER movie is that they're already recorded for the film, right?
-
Happy Spring, Everyone! :)
-
Feel-good vibes to Larry!
DR FJL, thank you for the vibes! I actually feel quite good today: new frames for my glasses are ordered and paid for, I've got plenty of work, and all I need are a bunch of vibes that some payments arrive to cover my health insurance, IRS estimated taxes, the rent, and a bit of new furniture and a dehumidifier!
And now, off to the errands.
I've always thought with the right director and cast The Most Happy Fella would make a wonderful movie - for years I thought Coppola should direct it up in wine country.
I agree with BK's sentiments on this one! I've felt that this would be a perfect marriage of material and director.
Also, I still think that Oliver Stone should direct ASSASSINS, either for cable or for the big screen.
Tonight on tv for me:
LOST, ELI STONE (abc)
APPRENTICE, LIPSTICK JUNGLE (NBC).
And MISGUIDED.
Not sure if anyone else saw the preview episode on tuesday. But it's funny and cute. Especially the lead girl. Although i cannot figure out why they have her hair mousy blonde/brown (she looks so much like jennifer finnegan this way). The way she wears it now (bright orange/red) is so stunning. But i guess they don't want her to be stunning!
But she sure stands out more with red hair!
Like DR MattH, i was stunned at the 3rd lowest vote getter (carly). I had thought she was the favorite. But i'm guessing america does not think so. I can't imagine her even making top 3 if she got so few votes.
I was not unhappy with the bottom 2. Do not like either of them. I was happier though with who went (amanda). Although since she hasn't been in the bottom (i don't think) it sort of must have been suprising. I should check out the idolvotes site to see who the most popular ones are. I am curious!
In her little talk, she leveled with him that he had been too inaccessible to the rest of them (i.e., HER) with Natalie clinging to him...as if Natalie were the reason he was there.
Matt talks the talk but he apparently can't walk the walk. SUCH A BABY when he readily admitted he was the biggest a**hole in the house. Suddenly, facing likely eviction, he gets all blubbery and "gee whiz innocent" as though he'd never crossed anyone.
I still have no favorites in the house. For all I care, Adam can put James and Chelsia on the block.
BUT...I disagree in principle with the condemnation of James. He DID honor his word. He did not nominate Matt for eviction. He nominated Sheila. As soon as that happened, he had FULFILLED his promise. That promise was not a promise NEVER nominate Matt or Natalie...it was a one-time deal. It was up to whoever played for POV to win said honor and change things around if her or she wanted to. When James won he was perfectly FREE to use the POV and use it to his advantage...even to overturning Sheila's nomination and putting Matt up. That's my take on things.
I've run my errands, and it's been a polyglot morning: Germans on the bus with me on my way downtown, an Italian lady on the phone riding the bus uptown with me alng with several others who, I believe, were speakoing French, but I only caught a bit on my way off the bus. Then, as I crossed 82nd Street two elderly English women passed me.
I've been listening to BLESS THE BRIDE, the 1947 British musical by Vivian Ellis and AP Herbert. Several readers on the Cast Recording List have sent me CDs of the London Studio cast from the 1960s, and I've been listening to them as well as the AEI recording of excerpts from the BBC radio broadcast from the 1940s. What a lovely show!
Big service for me tonight at the church.
Gradually, the lights are extinguished, until the service ends in total darkness.
Question for anyone:
WHY are eyeglass frames sooo expensive? I don't get it. I can understand the lenses being costly, as they must be ground precisely, but I do NOT understand the high cost of the frames.
A. Basic black or clear plastic rimmed, standard lens sized, frames are inexpensive.
B. The materials and techniques used to manufacture hi-tech light weight and relatively indestructible frames with spring-loaded ear pieces are pricey.
C. "Designer Frames" - you pay for the name!
Or put another way - they charge it because people pay it!
Perhaps you're right. The bridge of my nose is small and I have difficulty getting a good fit. I usually buy Silouettes, which run about $150, but I can't get a comfortable fit with most other manufacturers.
I asked my optican recently why some non-prescription sunglasses are so expensive and she did give what seemed like valid reasons, but a lot of that had to do with the quality of the lens, not the frame.
BTW, Luxottica in Italy manufactures frames under a wide array of designer names. They may carry different brand names, but most are made in the same factories.
I totally disagree re: james nominating matt. I think it was implied that he not nominate matt or nat these time (including vetos). Perhaps if someone else had won veto and james had no choice. But james planned it and did it.
I will say that they did edit it nicely (for james) in a way. Making it seem like he was going to nominate adam for betraying him. And then only finding out at the end it was matt.
I suppose from that i see that sharon is the only one with one bit of brains in her. I mean james acts like he is a genius. But my gosh if he could not figure out who voted to bring him back. It did not take much.
I was reading the televisionwitoutpity live feed discussion board this morning. And apparently chelsia is getting closer to finding out james did gay porn. They were all playing a game the other day about secrets. And james admitted he had one. And it was about sex. I think she kept bugging him. So this should come out soon.
Apparently matt (the other day) had joked that james was well endowed so his guess was porn. On the live show yesterday matt said nat was an NFL cheerleader which is not true (but they had to make up secret jobs). I guess nobody realized it wasn't true!
I wonder if adam has made his noms yet. Guesses were (as of this morning) that he would not nom shelia or natt. And not the boys james and ryan. So probably it will be chelsia and sharon. Hmm, i just went and read. And he is definitely nominating james (yeah!).
James did say to Natalie that he would not "put up" she or Matty. Whether you determine that to be, "nominate" or "back door," is up to interpretation. My interpretation is that he "meant" he would not "put them up" at all. It was hypocritical of him to be talking about people "not keeping their word" and then go and not keep his word to Natalie. However, that hypocrisy is rampant in these types of game shows....but it does make them look a bit foolish in my eyes when they keep complaining about the very things they themselves are doing.
Also, this constant getting upset because someone is supposedly "playing for themselves," well get a grip contestants...of course they are playing for themselves to win! That is the whole point (unless of course you are Natalie! LOL!)
Didn't Matt lie to James about how he voted when James was returned to the house? Isn't that the reason James gave for putting Matt on the block during POV?
I don't feel upset by the failure to keep his word when Matt blatantly lied -- and thus could not "man up" and tell the truth to James.
The lying did not bothered me, that is part of that game of Big Brother, it was that James was constantly saying that "your word is all you have..." and then he went back on his word. That is what I thought was dumb of him to do.
That said, it was likely a good idea for his game to get rid of Matty. I think James is a good player, but he needs to keep his emotions in check.
DR JEANNE - at America's Best with my SUPER STRONG prescription, two pairs of glasses with special lenses of some kind of something....cost $308.
Well....Miss Blue Moon is suffering from cancer of the lymph glands. She is home and on steroids and other medication, but the prognosis is not good....it is down to time left....a few months, I guess.
As for eyeglasses and eyeglass frames and lenses...
The two things I loved - and miss! - about my former insurance plan in DC through the AFM were the inclusion of dental and optical riders! With the way the plan was structured, most of the time, my lenses were free - I don't have any "fancy" things wrong with my eyes, so that also helped. Additionally, the cost of the frames were greatly reduced too, and they had some pretty nice optical shops on their approved list. The two pairs that I still have and wear today just cost me a little under $150 for both pairs. Thankfully, my prescription has not changed in years, so I haven't had to upgrade my lenses, but I have been thinking about getting a new set of eyeglasses lately, but, alas, the cost is just way too prohibitive. -And I always noticed that the frames at "For Eyes" that come under their "$99.00 complete" sale are $99.00 for a reason. ;)
What does Sir Andrew have to do with MADAMA BUTTERFLY?
Oh, please. I am sure that ALW has stolen MANY melodies from Puccini's Madama Butterfly for his own musicals!
-
Add me to the list of DRs needing new eyeglasses.
Question for anyone:
WHY are eyeglass frames sooo expensive? I don't get it. I can understand the lenses being costly, as they must be ground precisely, but I do NOT understand the high cost of the frames.
End of rant. (EOR)
I don't know, but I need new glasses too. I was considering making an appointment today but forgot to do it.
Goodbye, Mr Chips, the musical.....I love that line.....
I knew that....that's why I threw you that bone (so to speak)!
I got the Blu-ray review disc for UNBREAKABLE, my favorite of the M. Night Shymalan films. This will be what I'll watch tomorrow. It comes out April 1.
That is so strange, Matt. UNBREAKABLE is the one M. Night Shymalan film that I can't stand to sit through. The whole film makes my skin crawl.
-
Did you forget to put your glasses on?
;)
Wha? Did I know my molasses are gone?
-
I'm partial at the moment to Paula Dean's "Hey, y'aaaaaaawwwll"; does anyone really talk like that?
Yup
-
A. Basic black or clear plastic rimmed, standard lens sized, frames are inexpensive.
B. The materials and techniques used to manufacture hi-tech light weight and relatively indestructible frames with spring-loaded ear pieces are pricey.
C. "Designer Frames" - you pay for the name!
Or put another way - they charge it because people pay it!
der Brucer
If you divide the cost of the glasses but the number of days you wear them, it isn't so bad.
-
That is so strange, Matt. UNBREAKABLE is the one M. Night Shymalan film that I can't stand to sit through. The whole film makes my skin crawl.
I sorta felt that way the first time I saw it. But then I caught it on TV one night...started watching...and found myself totally mesmerized.
It has been a staple in my DVD collection ever since. Have enjoyed several intense viewings.
Ditto with "Signs", my favorite Shyamalan film (thus far).
-
Oh, please. I am sure that ALW has stolen MANY melodies from Puccini's Madama Butterfly for his own musicals!
Well, if you listen to any of the Meyerbeer operas, you'll hear lots of familiar melodies. ;) -And since Meyerbeer operas are rarely performend, well... Maybe that's "why", if you get my drift.
However, the "Humming Chorus" in Madama Butterfly has always reminded me of "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables and vice versa - especially when the barricades are spinning (in Les Miserables, that is) showing all the dead bodies, with the oboe playing the melody and the strings/keyboard sparsely accompanying.
There's comfort in candy, there's comfort in Sondheim. Even when Nancy LaMott sings "No One is Alone," I still hear "The Candy Man."
I watched an interesting mess of a movie last night called Unconditional Love, featuring actors as diverse as Rupert Everett, Kathy Bates, Barry Manilow, Dan Ackroyd, and Julie Andrews.
I liked this movie. And the woman who played Kathy Bates' daughter-in-law is hysterical! She went on to a recurring role in "Boston Legal."
I have been so busy the past few afternoons, answering the phone and doing such things that I am not getting my work done and am going crazy!! So I called Martha/Edith this afternoon and asked when she's ready to go full time. She couldn't talk then because she was at her other job, but she sounded pleased and I said we could talk about it in the morning. I think it will really help me get my work done if she is there all day. She has said in the past she wants to do it, so I'm hoping she really does.
DR Ginny, what is the difference between Classic Brach's & what is in the stores. I only buy Jelly Belly, when I do buy jelly beans, and then it is difficult to find the bins where you can choose the flavors. I'm picky about my flavors. ;D
Classic flavors - lemon, orange, lime, grape, cherry, licorice, etc. My family is definitely not into buttered popcorn, cappuccino, mango, or any other "gourmet" type jelly beans. In the stores, I was finding spicy, sour, tropical, etc. Finally found the classics at Walgreen's, where, for some reason, they wouldn't accept my CVS card.
JR, so sorry to hear that. As someone who dealt with two elderly female dogs contracting cancer within a short span of each other, take my advice and just do whatever you can to make them comfortable. We spent thousands getting our Collie treated, with several surgeries, but it was all for naught. We decided if it ever happens again, we will make them as comfortable as possible but not go to extremes. Hope that doesn't sound too callous.
Our new dog training class was interesting. This is with a different trainer. The first class was very exciting, which I expected. I'm hoping for new suggestion and idea for training in the areas Sherlock & I are lacking. I was very excited it has already happened. I also learned something that would have been very helpful for Echo when she was at the nursing homes. Oh well.
I have read that Goodbye, Mr. Chips will be released on DVD sometime in 2008. Don't know if that is still the plan. But I hope!
So very sorry to read your news about Miss Blue Moon, DR Jrand. But she's so very lucky to have a loving and concerned master who will provide much love and comfort.
-
DR JRand57, it's not that I want to sit on my eyeglasses.
Well... Hmmm....
No, I don't want to sit on them.
But sometimes accidents do happen! :)
-
I began my evening of viewing with two NUMB3RS episodes from Season 3. The first involved seemingly random murders on a freeway in LA. At first I suspected it was bk having road rage over the drivers he must contend with, but then the murderer turned out to be one of my all-time favorite actors from the TV series OZ.
-
My DH had breakfast this morning with German baritone Matthias Goerne and was offered a comp ticket to his performance tonight with the NY Philharmonic, but couldn't use it because he had to play Maundy Thursday services. :(
(http://www.planet-interview.de/interviews/goerne-matthias/pic_03.jpg)
-
The second episode dealt with a murder at a race track and an elaborate theory of gambling that was paying off too often for the victim.
-
I am exhausted and must away.
Smooches, kids!
-
I watched a LAW & ORDER rerun on TNT-HD, a good one with Jerry Orbach dealing with the murder of an insurance adjuster by the father of a little girl dying of leukemia which the company wouldn't pay for a certain treatment that could save her life. Compelling episode. I'm sure I saw it when originally aired, but I didn't remember a lot about it.
-
SMALLVILLE contained to mine TONS of kryptonite for use against Clark, this time imprisoned in a cell made of the stuff. Some pretty good action, but episodes where Clark is immobilized for almost the entire episode aren't usually among my favorites.
-
LOST - another compelling episode, a couple of surprises, and a couple of shocks!
And now we must wait five weeks for another new episode. Argh!
-
ELI STONE. Filled with angst over both cases the firm was dealing with. And I have quickly tired of Loretta Devine's character Patti whose sassy and disrespectful and unprofessional behavior just wouldn't be tolerated in any big law firm.
Eli's anguish, however, was very palpable, and I'm eager to see where the show goes from here.
-
Great news and good luck she is all you are hoping for.
So far so good. There are times when she forgets or makes the kind of mistakes you make when you are only there 4 hours and then leave and completely switch gears at another job. other than that, she's been with me for almost 3 months and although we're still working out the best way to do some things, it's been really good.
-
DR JRand57, it's not that I want to sit on my eyeglasses.
DO NOT expect a New Page Dance from Vanessa Redgrave.
-
Back from a short rehearsal. We only had General Mills, Professor Leder, Donna, and Rod this evening, so it was all very short scenes with almost no blocking. We ran everything three or four times each - we're dealing with a few early conflicts this week, but those go away and then all next week we have everyone we need to get through the rest of the big stuff, and then I start assembling the show sans the big numbers, of course.
-
The traffic getting through downtown was the WORST - an extra twenty minutes for no reason. The 5 actually moved right along - slow, but moving. But the street that leads to the theater has construction going on right at Imperial Highway and whatever mongoloid has timed the two signals there has completely screwed up traffic and had I not taken the bull by the horn it would have taken me thirty minutes to go a block and a half to Marie Callender's. So, I went around to the left turn lane and then turned in front of two lanes of traffic on my right (where they left a space for the parking lot entrance) and pulled into the lot and walked to Callender's. Ridiculous. I was so angry I was really hoping there were workers there, but there weren't.
-
Welcome fifteen GUESTS. Sorry, I don't really have any news for you.
-
Good Evening!
I'm back from my dinner at Tribeca Grill. I had the Maytag Bleu Cheese & Endive Salad to start off with, and then the Braised Short Rib for my entree. Oh, and the Chocolate Brioche Pudding with Espresso Gelato for dessert. My date had the Seared Tuna, the Grilled Salmon, and the Banana and Mango Sorbets. Very good food, good service (although, it started off sort of spottily), and a very nice evening with a friend.
The funny thing is is that I was sort of disappointed with the experience. For the wrong reasons. The restaurant is such a "legend" and still a hot spot after all these years that I had built up a certain level of expectation. I was expecting some more "flash", more "attitude" even, but what I got was a very professional and low-key evening. Like I said, disappointed for the wrong reasons. I had also expected more adventurous menu offerings, but, for the most part there was nothing on the menu that would scare off the "casual" diner. No foie gras, no braised pork belly, nothing sous-vided. Again... for all the wrong reasons.
But, again, I had a wonderful evening, and a very good meal.
-
And now I'm watching "Lost" via the DVR with my roomies...
-
And I have quickly tired of Loretta Devine's character Patti whose sassy and disrespectful and unprofessional behavior just wouldn't be tolerated in any big law firm.
Remember, last week we were informed that she had the goods on a senior partner. Blackmail buys a lot of tolerance.
Oh... And "Lost" was good... Maybe not as exciting as the past couple of weeks, but lots of information was "revealed". -Although, I'm actually quite puzzled by one thing that happened - rather, that didn't happen tonight, so... Until tomorrow...
-
LOST and ELI STONE still await me on the DVR - I got so engrossed in NY Opera's "Madama Butterfly" that I stayed with it for the whole three hours. I thought I would dislike the minimalist staging, but the 'Flower Duet" and "Humming Chorus" at the end of Act II won me over. (The staging was particularly effective for the camera.)
Nice to see a Pinkerton who looks like a young Navy LT and a Butterfly with real grit.
The staging of the end of the opera was its weakest point: Butterfly has her back to the audience and slashes her throat; Pinkerton's anguished cry of "Butterfly is hardy audible; and, most un-traditionally, Butterfly replaces the American Flag in her son's hands with a Rising Sun, apparently as a final act of rebellion.
