Snow has come to New York. It's a mess out there but the office is still open. They closed during the last big snowstorm which wasn't necessary and now when they probably should have closed they won't. I can hear the voices complaining now! Oy it will be a long day at work.

Friday is a work day.  Yesterday I received my DVD of MARRIED TO IT, so I can watch it again before receiving the fancy KRITZERLAND cd release.

And of course after reading all of yesterday's posts, I had to have a Hamlisch festival on the record player.

Occasional DR CASON wrote on his Facebook that he named his Ipod - Titanic - so that when he turns it on it will say "The Titanic is synching."

Good morning, all! I am snowbound and very happy for the excuse to stay in, do a little work and watch lots of DVDs!

BK, good news on the casting. I haven't seen Eddie Korbich since 2004 (REDHEAD at Goodspeed; I think he was the killer) and I've liked Marsha Kramer enormously since she recorded the song on the Peter Pan album. I hope your reading goes well.

Oooh!!!

"The first-ever film version of Lewis Carroll's tale has recently been restored by the BFI National Archive from severely damaged materials. Made just 37 years after Lewis Carroll wrote his novel and eight years after the birth of cinema, the adaptation was directed by Cecil Hepworth and Percy Stow, and was based on Sir John Tenniel's original illustrations. In an act that was to echo more than 100 years later, Hepworth cast his wife as the Red Queen, and he himself appears as the Frog Footman. Even the Cheshire cat is played by a family pet.

With a running time of just 12 minutes (8 of which survive), Alice in Wonderland was the longest film produced in England at that time. Film archivists have been able to restore the film's original colours for the first time in over 100 years."

re: the figure skating

I am really surprised that NBC does not put the entire skating on one of its sister stations. What is up with that?

Here CTV (that main station) had to show the US/Canada women's hockey final. But TSN had every single skater (not that most of the lower ranked people were that interesting). But still figure skating is very popular in the US. I wonder if people complained if they would do anything.

DR Jennifer - Simple: $$$  It's just not cost-effective for them to devote that sizable a chunk of prime-advertising and revenue time to an essentially "niche" sport and audience.  They show who the people know, want to see. -Which, of course, is "controlled" by them in the first place more or less.

RE: ladies figure skating results

Read the skating results on-line this morning and I'm anxious to see them for myself. Sounds like it was a good night, and I'll be curious to see if my opinions match the judges' final tabulations.

I stayed up till the bitter end (after midnight). But it was very good. Yu-na was perfect. it's hard to believe she is the biggest olympian star in south korea. But she seems really sweet.  The first half of the 2nd place girl's routine was amazing. But she faltered in the 2nd half.  And of course Joannie made everyone all teary again. She didn't fall. But i wonder if she had skated perfectly if she could have moved up one place (she was only 3 points behind). I was so happy for her.

The one i was most surprised about was the UG girl rachel. I thought she would place much higher than she did. Apparently they took deductions on a few of her jumps. But they were not obvious at all. I would be curious to see slow motion replays of those. The other american looked thrilled. She really did very well.

I think NBC is still recovering from the special "All Olympics" package they offered during the Los Angeles Olympics.  They had three channels covering ALL of the events, 24 hours a day. It was a special Cable/Pay deal. From what I recall, they didn't get as many subscribers as they thought they would. ???  -But I could be mis-remembering.  Maybe DR MattH would know, remember how successful that was.  In any case...

Women's Figure Skating is "popular". It's just not that popular.

At this point, they should just do one mass purge over the next two weeks and get down to the Final Four sooner than later.  No matter what "they" keep saying, this is definitely not the strongest, most-talented bunch of contestants they've ever had.  Not by a long shot.

Great album and a lot of fun. Haven't listened to Donna the Dominatrix in a while, so that's going into the weekend play list. Along with "The Firebrand of Florence."

DR John G. - From the looks of it, it looks like your posting a link to your Facebook page, and not an actual image link (-one that ends in .jpg, .gif, etc.).

So...

If you want to link to your Facebook album...
Birdy (http://www.facebook.com/album.php?id=1560585524&aid=79532)

Or if you want to link directly to a pic...

*You need to right-click on the photo and then copy the image's direct URL.

re: the figure skating

I am really surprised that NBC does not put the entire skating on one of its sister stations. What is up with that?

Here CTV (that main station) had to show the US/Canada women's hockey final. But TSN had every single skater (not that most of the lower ranked people were that interesting). But still figure skating is very popular in the US. I wonder if people complained if they would do anything.

I can live without seeing the skaters who aren't even close to medal contention.  I'd rather see some of the other events too

I am taking the day off today.  Hoo and Ray!!!!   The fact I have been really stressed out hit me big time yesterday and since the calendar was pretty clear today i decided to go pay Edith and leave.  I had coffee with Paul, got a hair cut (a really bad one, but it's cheap) called my insurance agent to see if I can reduce my rates or swith plans or something.  I may check other places too.

So, I am home right now...but soon will be off to the home show, maybe check out the sales at the stores, get the ingredients for my appetizer for tonight and if the sales are right - buy a new outfit. I am not going to work this weekend.  I am going to clean the house and do some projects here.  Do the film stuff and just relax.    I think that will really recharge me.

I had to step out to pay my Verizon bill and it's beautiful out. On my block, all the trees are outlined in white with so much snow, and the air is bright, clear and cool. However, the street corners are a mess of slushy puddles, wading pools, and piles of snow.

Now I have to figure out where Mr Kevin Spirtas can be! I've sent him a couple of emails but I've gotten no response.

CNBC and MSNBC are both showing Olympics during part of their broadcast days (or they were; I haven't checked in a couple of days), but I was VERY disappointed that NBC didn't at least show the next-to-top tier of girls. The girl from Switzerland who inched out Rachael Flatt for 6th was in that flight, and I would like to have had a chance to compare their long programs.

And I was MOST interested in seeing how badly Carolina Kostner (the current European champion) skated to fall from 7th to 16th.

I got a surprise today.

I filed my taxes on January 31st (filed electronically) I just got a letter from the IRS telling me that they found a credit I neglected to take. They figured out the tax for me and increased my refund.

This is a new credit, one that I hadn't even heard of, called the Making Work Pay Tax Credit. It's temporary and it adds $400 to my refund. I never heard of it but I looked over my taxes again and it's OK with me so I get more money than I planned on getting. I thought when I saw the letter I had made a mistake and would need to file an amended return. Lucky me, it's not that at all!

New York is quiet and snowy. The sidewalks are clear in my neighborhood but we live on a side street and they haven't been plowed yet so we can walk along the sidewalks but the cars are driving through snow and slush.

Laundry is done, I got a bigger refurn and I had a snow day from work. It's been a good day.

When I went down, I was able to watch the skating from last night interrupted when I did my errands but I got to see everything before I went to lunch. Some observations:

Only Rachael Flatt, Kim Yu-Na, and Marai Nagasu skated completely clean programs. I found it interesting that Rachael was downgraded on her two triple flips when none of the other skaters were downgraded on what were OBVIOUS partially rotated jumps. The eight points she lost would have had her in 4th place with Marai in 5th and Miki Ando in 6th. I think that particular strict judge eased up after Rachael skated. I KNOW all of those other jumps were not fully rotated, and Rachael's looked much better landed, at least at the vantage point of the NBC cameras.

I thought Joannie had a lovely skate, but if she had been able to skate a completely clean program, she would have won silver just like at last year's world championships.

Yu-Na skated a majestic and difficult program, but I still don't quite see the magic. Maybe I'll get it after I've watched it a few more times. She's effortless and beautiful, but I don't get the same thrill I got when watching Michelle Kwan at her best. Maybe I'm just getting too old and it's all too familiar now (or it could be the change in the judging system which now makes everyone's programs too much alike.)

I was impressed with Mao Asada's two triple axels in her program, but it was otherwise rather lockstep and mechanical; of course, that just made the memory of Yu-Na's performance that much more ethereal.

Right now, Rachael Flatt has a more difficult program of jumps, but she needs to work some on style. Marai Nagasu has lots of style (especially for 16) and just needs to increase the difficulty in her program so that in four years, she'll be the one they're all chasing.

Lunch ran very late, so it ended up being a quick lunch because I needed to get back to start on my work project. It was also BITTERLY cold when I went out on my errands. The wind made it feel 10 degrees colder than it probably was, and it was a miserable set of errands going in and out of the cold, but I'm glad to have it over and done for another week.

Beautiful bird photos -- both John's bird and Jane's ring-neck ducks. Ring-necks are common out here in the winter. They'll be leaving soon.

What kind of bird do you have, John?

He's a goffin's cockatoo. He's also a self-mutilator, which explains the bare spot.

DR Jane, I hope your pain can be gotten under control sooner rather than later. Having endured pain far longer than I wanted last fall, I know how much you must long to be pain free or at least be making some noticeable progress toward becoming pain free. My thoughts and hopes are with you as you continue to work toward that goal.

Well, it's apparently - wait for it - an AOL server problem.  And when one goes directly to AOL.com and tries to log in to one's various accounts, one gets an error message saying they are having a technical issue.  It's been happening repeatedly for the last three weeks - if I didn't have four of these accounts (which I don't pay for) and could switch all this over to gmail, I would.  But it's too much work and too hard.

I have four accounts on AOL and haven't had one bit of trouble accessing mine. How odd.

Yu-Na skated a majestic and difficult program, but I still don't quite see the magic. Maybe I'll get it after I've watched it a few more times. She's effortless and beautiful, but I don't get the same thrill I got when watching Michelle Kwan at her best.

At Michelle's best in the Olympics?  I find I enjoy many of the skaters more once they have matured some, even if they don't jump as high.

Michelle skated a beautiful long program at the 1998 games, but it wasn't completely flawless (there was a tiny hitch with her triple flip). That same program was spellbinding at Nationals where she handily beat Tara Lipinski. At the Olympics, Tara beat her.

I have watched a total of 14 HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL episodes today; 9 of them were watched tonight. They kind of blur in the mind, but one was certainly unusual:

Paladin running into Phileas Fogg and his cohorts from AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS. Of course, David Niven, Cantinflas, and Shirley MacLaine were nowhere to be seen (Patric Knowles played Fogg), but it was kind of an odd, different episode for the show.

Another one had Jeanette Nolan as the female sheriff of a town where the citizens were bullying her. It was one of the comic episodes of the half season.

Other guest stars on display: Don Grady, Denver Pyle, Parker Fennelly, Lou Antonio, William Talman, Hari Rhodes, Brett Somers, Jack Weston, Peter Falk, Warren Oates, and Andrew Prine.

Also, Robert Blake and George Kennedy both showed up again as guest stars playing different characters from their appearances earlier in the season!

I only had a few minutes left, so I began rewatching the final flight of ladies skaters from last night. I only got Rachael and Miki watched, so tomorrow I'll get to see Yu-Na's program again.

I only have five episodes left of HAVE GUN WILL TRAVEL, and there are no bonus features, so it looks like I'm going to have tomorrow night free. Maybe that's when I can get the long programs for the ladies transferred over to a DVD-R.

Do you mean the girl from Finland?  I actually think Rachael outskated her. In fact the Canadian announcers were shocked that Rachael was not first after she skated. For some reason they did not notice any of the deductions that they gave the US skater. I am curious were the US/NBC announcers annoyed? Or had they realized a lot of the triples would be downgraded?

Will you be able to see any of the second tier of skaters online? I find that crazy that you only got to see the last group and not hte 2nd to last.

I haven't checked on-line, and the final skate program has not yet gone up in the On Demand section of the Time-Warner cable (where I was able to see Plushenko's final skate after the DVR cut off the broadcast since it went over the allotted time.)

But four years ago, NBC certainly showed both tiers of ladies skaters (placed 12-1 after the short program) on their primetime broadcast.

Good Evening!

I had planned to come back home after my City Bakery excursion, but...

The snow would stop for about 20 minutes at a time, then sun would start to peek out from behind the clouds, and then the snow would start right back up again.  It was off and on for about five hours.  And it was Beautiful!

Sometimes it fell in very fine flakes, other times in very big ones.  I had hoped to get up on The Highline, but they ended up keeping it closed off to the public today.  However, there were still lots of snow-covered trees and streets to look at and photograph.

And by the time I was set to head back home, my friend, Eric, called asking if I wanted to join him for dinner out in Flushing, so... :)

DR MattH - As always, it's been interesting reading your thoughts on the Women's Figure Skating. I have to say, I always admired Michelle Kwan's skating, but I never really found her "exciting". Beautiful, graceful and technically accomplished, Yes; but never that heart-racing.  Who knows? Maybe she just made it all seem so effortless, too effortless to my eyes. On the other hand, I found Yu-Na Kim's skating quite thrilling.

Horse racing.
