Few people know that in his original draft, Shakespeare's immortal words for "Richard III" were:

"A paraclete! A paraclete! My kingdom for a paraclete!"

It was, of course, considered too erudite a reference for the time...and the noble "horse" was decided upon, instead.

Rain in the morning.

Rain in the evening.

It makes the grass grow so I can have something else to do like mow it.  Sigh.

Happy, Happy Birthday to DR Hisaka!

I have to tell you all about the poor little dog I saw last night.  I was going into the grocery store and there was a little mutt by the door who looked like he was very hot, thirsty and tired.  Some lady said she had seen him down by one of the school which trust me was a very long way from the store.

I felt so sorry for it.  I bought a couple of cans of dog food, a bottle of water and some pie tins so I could give him something to drink and eat then I was going to coax him into my car and take him to the vet.  I would have paid the fee for the vet to take him/her and find him/her a good home.

The unhappy thing is that by the time I came out of the store, he was gone.  I drove all around the parking lot and behind the store looking for him/her but alas, he/she was no where to be found.  Poor little baby.

DRs PennyO and Jane, more on conquering fear: Emmett Miller, MD, who specializes in mind-body medicine, produces a wide array of audio tapes on various topics, including one titled "Freeing Yourself from Fear." I have not heard this one myself, but I've used several of his other tapes and have found them very useful. See drmiller.com. His staff are also helpful about details not on the website.

Good morning, all!  The body does not want to move today, and the mind is lagging as well.  Perhaps it's been all the rain, perhaps I'm thinking about winter hibernation, perhaps I'm coming down with something, perhaps I'm giving in to my usual lazy instincts.  All I know is, at 6:30 the alarm went off, and at 9:20 I decided to get out of bed, finish the choral arrangement for THE SINGING NUN, go to the post office, and if there's time, tidy up this dump.

Isn't PARACLETE a play by Shakespeare?

Thanks, Donald for another good radio show. I'm not generally a fan of ALW but there is something about Evita that I like. It was nice to hear all the different recordings, including Elaine Paige before she got so broad and forced.

I've been listening to the CD release of KISMET with Dorothy Kirsten and the late, great Gordon MacRae.  It doesn't hld a candle to the OBC, but I'm enjoying it immensely.  While MacRae - who does both the Caliph and Hajj on the dsc - sounds as good as Alfred Drake, his attitude still strikes me as more of the juvenile Caliph role.  Dorothy Kirsten, whose early career included productions of operettas like THE NEW MOON, was underused on recordings: a lovely soprano and great diction.  The disc also includes studio names that always intrigued me:  Bunny Bishop and Salli Terri!

Well, THAT cat's out of the bag.  It's what I've been alluding to, but I wasn't quite ready to announce yet.  This morning I got a note from the guy at Playbill, asking for confirmation, but that article was obviously up before the confirmation was sent.

So, yes, that's the reason for the second NY trip in mid-October.  We're very excited to be recording Al and Em again.

Sorry to read of your cold, DR Ron. A summer cold is the worst, though, of course, living in cool northern California, it's not as hot there and thus maybe not as miserable as a cold in the deep South in summer.

Still, I know it's annoying and hope you get better soon.

TOnight I am looking forward to the season premiere of BONES, one of my favorite of last year's new shows.

However, I'm looking even MORE forward to Victor Garber's new series JUSTICE. He's supposedly playing a part miles and miules removed from the internally brooding Jack Bristoe on ALIAS, and the show has gotten mostly positive reviews from the ones I've read. Can't wait to see it.

Since the 10 p.m. hour is vacant on my schedule tonight, I'm thinkthe season finale of DEADWOOD will fit in that slot just fine.

That leaves this afternoon for something musical - perhaps the Chenoweth/LuPone CANDIDE that I had on tap over the weekend and didn't have on hand to play.

BODY DOUBLE is indeed an awful film, but I have to admit that it IS one of my guilty pleasures.

As for the best of De Palma. I think BLOW OUT is the best followed by THE UNTOUCHABLES and then MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, but I'd certainly NEVER call him a genius of the cinema.

Brian DePalma is someone I liked a lot before I learned what a good director is.

His early, sloppy and fun films are enjoyable:
Greetings, Hi Mom!, Phantom of the Paradise (all with Gerritt Graham), Get to Know Your Rabbit (which I highly recommend to anyone; of course DePalma himself disowns it)

Then he started getting "serious" and his films are virtually unwatchable. The Fury, which has been on Fox a lot lately, is just such an unpleasant waste. Sisters, Dressed to Kill, man it is hard to find a likeable charcter or a shred of logic in any of these.

Body Double is at least entertaining despite making little sense.

Scarface, Casualties of War, The Untouchables, Snake Eyes... no thanks.

I see he directed an upcoming movie about the Black Dahlia. Should be bad.

I was a huge Elizabeth Hartman fan, based on A Patch Of Blue (especially), The Group, and You're A Big Boy Now.  I gather she was not a happy person, and that affected her career.  She had a sad end.

The A Patch Of Blue score is a big thumbs up - I've probably listened to it as much as any score ever.

Oh, let's see. . .
I like THE UNTOUCHABLES  and SISTERS.
I really like CARRIE ("They're all going to laugh at you!") and PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.
I'm mixed on OBSESSION - though, it's interesting to hear Betty Buckley's disembodied voice once again. . .(she also did some voiceover work in PofP).

As for THE BLACK DAHLIA - I've been eagerly awaiting this film since I first read James Ellroy's novel many years ago, and long before L.A. CONFIDENTIAL.    The DAHLIA milieu is much the same as that of LA CONFIDENTIAL, and early photos look as if the film captures that same look.  Still, it has a director who is variable at best and a screenwriter whose last credit was Tommy Cruise's WAR OF THE WORLDS. . .Where are Curtis Hanson and Brian Helgeland when you really need them? ? ?

aside to dr rodzinski:   ;)

Happy Happy birthday, DR Hisaka. I do miss the lovely photos...

Jeanne - thanks for the info. My second workshop is tonight... and, apparently, word has spread --people are signing up like a house afire! I'll make more copies of the Sunday night handouts for those new folks. Tonight we'll do a lot more actual writing -- beginning with the "How I Accomplished Something I'm Proud Of In The Past..." exercise which Cilla suggested!

It's finally raining a bit. The stream was as low as I've ever seen it - I had to move some rocks to get the water wand submerged a few days ago. But this morning it's running again, not fast, but chortling merrily over the rocks. This cat has become quite the little domestic pet. Yeah. Except for the furry gore I've been cleaning off the deck each morning...

BK - congrats on the new disc project. And many more.

Ron- maybe a cold is the only way your body has of slowing you down to rest? Hope you're feeling better after your nap. Oy.

That's it for now - gonna put together tonight's handouts, and figure out what I'm going to read on Saturday night... laters, gators!

Greetings from the Local History Room, a library service point where I haven't worked for a very long time.  They have a lot of people out sick, on vacation, days off, etc., and called on other departments for help.  It's only an hour, so please send vibes that no one needs help until after 2pm EDT!  Unless, of course, it's somebody like NPR's Noah Adams, who I helped at this desk once when he was working on his Wright Brothers book.

This is wonderful news!!  Congratulations on being able to record this show live!! ;D

Watched three very different shows on TV this afternoon.

I started with THE MUPPET SHOW with Mark Hamill. One of their lesser shows since Mark Hamill doesn't have much business being on a musical variety show. Of course, he was playing Luke Skywalker and C3PO and R2D2 were there as well as Chewbacca, so there were more skits than music this time around.

Next was the marvelous concert version of CANDIDE with Paul Groves and Kristen Chenoweth. Superb.

And how great to see John Herrera again whom I've had a giant crush on ever since seeing him in THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD and later on TV in ROMANCE/ROMANCE.

FInished the afternoon with the last episode of THE WILD WILD WEST on disc 6. (One more disc to go).

This one guest starred Don Rickles as a wily magician and Rhys Williams (a favorite) as the duplicitous mastermind behind the killings. Ann Elder played this episode's femme fatale.

Just wanted to pop on and say I, haven't been on in a few days. Things down here in hickland are getting busy with high school football starting this friday, we air a stupid 15 minute show dedicated to it and I have to get all ready for that. I'm envious of all you who have the day off monday, we don't get holidays off (but we do get doublepay so I shouldn't complain) but I have to work 6 day workweeks from now through october, except for my trip to NYC! Anyway, back to the grindstone, hope everybody is doing good and happy birthday to anyone I missed.

Brad Ross knows I have a site.  He's more senile than I am.

Have him join.

Back from morning meeting, which was very good, several errands (which were good), and now waiting for music fellow to come and finish going over the two new lead sheets for the two new songs, so we can get them to elmore.  He wasn't quite finished when he was here yesterday.

Well...it's official!  I've signed papers to make an offer on a condo!  Now, the seller has to either accept, counter-offer or totally decline.  I just found out that the current asking price is less than the original asking price!  She (the seller) dropped it because it hasn't sold!  AND there are several other units in the same complex that have been on the market for a while as well, so I'm hoping that that's an incentive for her to accept my offer and just sell it to me!

Matt...I don't suppose you (or anybody else) recorded "Romance/Romance," did you?  I remember watching and taping this on A&E (when it was still "Arts & Entertainment TV"), but I have not been able to find my tape of it.  Since I started boxing up all my videos, I've been trying to find certain ones, and that's one of the ones that I can't find. :'(

I have a very grainy, very horrible taped-off-TV copy of that ROMANCE/ROMANCE. Reception was very bad that night on A&E, and I always assumed it would be back on again at a time when I could get a better copy. I never saw it appear again.

I know Singer or whoever the sponsor was sold a commercial tape of that show, but I waited for a rebroadcast (to save money), and it never happened.

Would be glad to dub you a copy on DVD-R, but believe me, the quality is really dreadful.

I slept a bunch of the afternoon away...and when I woke up, I felt crappy.

It occurred to me that, despite the fact I wasn't at all hungry, I hadn't eaten anything other than a slice of cantaloupe and a banana the entire day.

A bowl of split pea soup later I was almost a new man.

For supper:  Stouffer's "Grandma's Old-Fashioned Chicken Rice Bake"...my favorite comfort food for such occasions.

Tonight I was going to watch NEW FACES on videotape, but several phone calls from friends who had lost power delayed my starting it, so I watched a MURDER SHE WROTE rerun episode off the Biography Channel. It happened to be one from the later years I hadn't seen - Jessica in a "duel" with another college professor to discover the solution to the mystery of a campus murder. Interesting scenario, but unlike the early years in the series, the audience wasn't given enough information ahead of time to be able to solve it ourselves.

BONES introduced a new boss to the scientists on the show, and I didn't like her. Even a late-in-show defense of her team didn't sway me into liking her or wanting her to be part of the show. This is going to be a character that's going to take some time for me to warm to.

JUSTICE was a flashy, interesting legal series, but I didn't buy Kerr Smith as a whiz lead defense attorney. It needed someone with a little more substance - a Mark Valley, for example (but he's currently on BOSTON LEGAL). Garber was great, and it was also great to have Eaamon Walker (from OZ) as part of the team. He certainly could be a very charismatic lead defense attorney. Too bad he and Kerr Smith can't switch positions on the team!

Finally got to the DEADWOOD finale. A somewhat quieter episode than the others this season, but there was still enough tension to keep me ill-at-ease as I watched. The fates of some characters and the surprising election results made for a somber end of season finish. One wonders how soon the two made-for-HBO movies will be produced to wind up the series.

Hmmmm...I am trying to think of what my favorite Glenn Ford performance is...I remember him in an early Blondie and Dagwood film back from around 1940 and he was even good back then...maybe BLACKBOARD JUNGLE...he was certainly very good in that film.

The Oscars and their Board of Governors are idiots.  Stupid, incomprehensible idiots who make Hollywood the low place it's become.  Glenn Ford deserved an honorary Oscar, if only for Gilda, The Blackboard Jungle, The Big Heat and his very touching Pa Kent in Superman.  Add to that all his other wonderful films (and his westerns with Delmer Daves) and the Academy can take their Oscar statuette and put it up their collective rectal cavities.

I haz spoken.

Did Glen Ford EVER give a bad performance? ? ? ?
He was also very fine in  comedy or two - POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES springs to mind.
DEAR HEART against Geraldine Page also provides pleasures.
His Pa Kent is heartbreakingly real.

WILL it really happen?? :o

Will they accept my offer?  It's less than what it was listed for (of course), but then they had already dropped their price once by the time I made my offer.

And if they counter-offer, I have to decide if I want to (should?) accept it.  Too many decisions!

I just read that "Joseph Stefano, who wrote the screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho" and was co-creator of television's science fiction anthology series "The Outer Limits," has died. He was 84.

Stefano died Aug. 25 at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, funeral director Elaine Munoz said. The cause of death wasn't disclosed.
"

He died on August 25th and it's just being reported?
