Topic of the Day:  does Al Hirschfeld count?  Otherwise (in alphabetical order):

Berkeley Breathed (Bloom County)
Darby Conley (Get Fuzzy)
Jim Davis (Garfield)
Gary Larson (The Far Side)
Charles Schultz (Peanuts)

That's all that I can think of now.

Boyle, who received an honorary Oscar in 2008, died Sunday of natural causes at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Art Directors Guild announced.

LA TIMES (http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-tom-mankiewicz-20100803,0,353048.story)

Quote
Tom Mankiewicz dies at 68; screenwriter for James Bond, Superman films

The script doctor 'created personalities, emotion and life' and gave the characters 'a wonderful sense of humor,' recalls 'Superman' director Richard Donner.

Tom Mankiewicz, a screenwriter and premier script doctor who made his reputation working on such James Bond films as "Diamonds Are Forever," "Live and Let Die" and "The Man With the Golden Gun," has died. He was 68.

Mankiewicz, who received a controversial credit for rewriting the 1978 film " Superman" and its 1980 sequel, died Saturday at his home in Los Angeles after a brief illness, according to John Mankiewicz, his cousin.

As a second-generation member of the Mankiewicz movie clan, he had often admitted he was intimidated by his family and its reputation. His father, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, the Oscar-winning writer and director of the 1950 film "All About Eve," was one of the most celebrated filmmakers of his era. His uncle, Herman J. Mankiewicz, co-wrote "Citizen Kane" (1941) with Orson Welles.

Good morning, all! I am in the middle of one of the Indianapolis charts, so I have to hop to it.

I slept fitfully last night; I urned off the light at 11, to be awakened by the Oaf Above Me somewhere between then and midnight, Besides wanting the pig deported, I'm wondering if I can get a lawyer and sue the landlord for not resolving problems I've complained to them about.

I have no other news.

At least she is full grown and you can see her.  When Bosco, our tortie & white, was a kitten she would disappear in front of our eyes.  The natural camouflage was amazing & scary when we couldn't find her.

Did she come microchipped or will you be doing that?  I know it is more common to microchip a dogs.  If I do have cats again the next ones will get a microchip.

My mother was a HUGE Thurber fan and in fact I inherited a first edition THURBER CARNIVAL signed by Mr. Thurber (where the frell it is after this move is anyone's guess).  Her favorite Thurber was the one of two people fencing, one of them having decapitated the other, and exclaiming, "Touché!"  (She had to explain it to me when I was about 7 or 8 ).

BK, are you aware that Keith Olbermann reads a Thurber story on his COUNTDOWN program every Friday?  He did it as a lark one week and it turned out all the Thurber kids and grandkids are huge fans of his and contacted him, and he's made it into a weekly segment.

I knew Shel Slverstein and he was a very interesting man. He had a great sense of humor, but his "Ballad of Lucy Jordan" is one of the most unsettling songs I know. It's the story of my mother and her madness.

I'm not only emotionally down but i'm feeling crappy; I can't figure out if it's allergies or I'm coning down with something and i hate that. Luckily, I have work and that keeps my mind off my troubles and my impulse from getting on the phone and raging at a friend. So, back to work.

Please No raging at friends!!  I find raging to the person in my head as a walk really helps.  The rage gets it out of my system & the walk releases those good endorphins.

Do you mean the ballad is based on your mother or it coincidentally captures her?

Your Allergies remind me of a favorite James Thurber Quote

" I used to wake up at 4AM and start sneezing sometimes for five hours.I tried to find out what sort of allergy I had but finally came to the conclusion that it must be an allergy to consciousness"

Other Favorite Thurber Quatations:

"All human beings should try to learn before they die what they are running from and to,and why"

"I hate Women because they always know where things are"

"He knows all about Art,but he doesn't know what he likes"

"Well,If I called the wrong number why did you answer the phone?"

"It's better to know some of the questions than all of the answers"

"A Woman's place is in the wrong"

"He who hesitates is sometimes saved"

I Hope,Larry That I cheered you up a little

I can also look books up by the title. But I find it faster by the author. Since many books have similar names. And in our syster if you type in a book title they often give you many other choices.

But we still reserve books manually. So you have to know the name of the author.

Do. Not. Rage. At. Your. Friend. !!!!

Do you mean the ballad is based on your mother or it coincidentally captures her?

It captures her and her tragedy.

I just read the lyrics.  I can imagine how you feel reading them, kind of how I felt reading Prince of Tides after my brother told me I must read it.

Still have about two hundred boxes to put postage on, but that won't take too much time tomorrow.  Had some poached eggs and toast to tide me over until after tonight's event.  Hoping we have a decent crowd - it's always amazing to me that the same people who always profess to "want" to come to these things, never do - always an excuse, no matter what day, what time, what month, what year.  I'm now convinced they just can't be bothered and would find an excuse no matter what, just as I shall do whenever they invite me to any event they're involved in.  Heretofore I have been a good soldier and gone.  Not any more.

Dr elmore, when the horrendous lies my sister told about me were at their worst, as was the entire situation, I was a mess.  One day my cousin looked at me at said "I think you need to see a therapist about this".  LOL-that snapped me out of it, at least enough to begin to figure out how to deal with it.  Ranting while I walked was one method.  The other was writing letters & then deleting them.  Always exercise & walking.

Yesterday at Public Storage I had a little set-to with the person on duty, who was a bit of an idiot.  Today the manager called me, as I requested.  In going over things, he has finally realized what I've been saying for a long time - something is rotten in the state of Denmark - he looked at my contract from 2001 and realized that there's been price adjustments over the years that actually should have lowered my rent there.  But instead, my rent kept being raised.  Not only that, apparently I've been paying not for the current month but for the previous month, so therefore it looked as if I was always a month late on my rent, and therefore they've been charging occasional late fees.  All this is going to be discussed with the district manager tomorrow and I suspect I'll be getting quite a nice credit, at least that's what should happen.  They'd actually cut my lock off and put one of theirs on, because it looked like I was behind a month - well, I wasn't behind anything, and I'm now going to make them pay for the lock replacement, too.

Take a tip from BK...just let it go.  Take a shower and let it all wash off you.  You have no control over what anyone else does, so why worry about it?  It's like Cinderella's Prince in Into the Woods when Jack's mother doesn't know if Jack is alive or dead:  "Worrying will do you no good.  If he's safe, then he's safe.  If not...then there's nothing we can do for him."

So Larry...worrying (or getting angry) will do you no good. :-*

DR Elmore, take a bit of advice from Bob Merrill in "Prettybelle":

I met a man
Who says he tries
To laugh as often
As he cries.

It's often hard to do, but it has helped. On many occasions. I have just had to shrug off the insanity, the stupidity, the anger, the ugliness and just laugh. Sometimes it comes out full of venom at first. But it could be a start.

Well, she is in the hospital because during her afternoon grant whatever, she had problems that led to her being taken by ambulance to a hospital. Tomorrow morning she is having a cardiac cathartization, and I asked her to call me when it's over.

Hey, I resemble that remark!   I'm allergic to penicillin so I have a different antibiotic.  I just finished day 6 of the antibiotics and haven't needed the inhaler for 3 nights now.  I'm definitely getting better and don't believe it's asthma...hope you have the same results I did, Vixmom!

Can only stay a second.

Just wanted to say bk's book reading was really nice.   His wonderful smile and stories were the best.

Night all. ;)

Had a really nice turnout at the library - several friends, but virtually none of the usual suspects from my eBlast and few of my Facebook "friends."  I really will now not support any events they ask me to attend - not a one of them.  If this was a one-off occurrence I would understand.  But these people have NEVER gotten off their collective ASSES to be supportive, while I, fool that I occasionally am, have been supportive to many of them numerous times.  No more, baby, no more.

I read for thirty minutes - I've learned for next time that I really don't want to read for more than twenty - the audience was fine, but I lose focus after twenty minutes.  And it was more fun just telling stories and answering questions - muse Margaret and her ever-lovin' Richard was there - and I probably embarrassed her by calling her out, but she means so much to me I just had to.

I sold about six books, so that was nice.  One nice fellow came because he's a huge Nudie Musical fan - another because he feels that I Want To Eat Your Face is the highest moment in all of cinema (that's exactly how he put it, and he was SERIOUS).  Everyone there was very nice.  But there was one of those really odd happenings that I simply could not believe - but I'll save that story for the notes.

After, Barry, me, and Juliana A. Hansen's mother, Diane, all went to the Daily Grill, where I ate way too much food - so that will be my splurge meal for the week.
