Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the sound of one hand clapping, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they have the sound of one udder clapping, which, of course, is udder nonsense. We don't allow groaning here at haineshisway.com

And the word of the day is: FLORUIT!

Will we never get to page two?

Where in tarnation IS everyone?

DR George "Priscilla" did quite well in Sydney and is now playing here in Melbourne. Two of OZ Derek's friends report back "don't bother" and I thought they were more likely to enjoy that would I. IMHO - another unnecessary musical! Songs from the movie used of course. There was a give away of CD tracks (a sampler I guess ) in the Sunday paper last week.

Hmmm...maybe I should just tell them to cancel the order and I could reorder "Only Heaven Knows" on its own. :-\

If there is NO original music on the recording, I probably won't be as interested in it as I thought.
-
BK, I have the DVD to "Sunrise," also. I think it's a beautiful movie. :)

DR Edisaurus - ***CAT SCAN VIBES*** to you!!!!
Did you ever share with us how the cats reacted when they went onto the screened porch for the first time?
Thanks for posting the great photos last evening! :)

For Ask bk day:
I'm curious why you changed Zubrick from a florist to a lifeguard? Both were funny.

DR Ron Pulliam - I did not know that Hangover Square had been released on DVD - thanks for the heads up!

And the word of the day is: FLORUIT!
Let us LIFT OUR glasses in salute to the years 2008 and onwards, when our DR Cason FLORUIT!

For Ask bk day:
I'm curious why you changed Zubrick from a florist to a lifeguard? Both were funny.
Oh, come on, you just know BK had to show Zubrick with his main squeeze!
-
DR td - you make quite a lovely southern belle. :)
-
I have no idea why I'm up at this hour, and should get back to bed.
Good to see you again, DR Slapdash!
-
Here's a question for our esteemed BK -
Under what circumstances would you wear pink?
-
Back to bed - Buster is insisting.
-
And when Buster insists...you DO. :)
Take care, DR SWW!

And the word of the day is: FLORUIT!
Wasn't she the Red Menace?

Morning, boys!

Good morning, Ben and elmore!
Thanks again, Ben.

You are welcome Tom. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for letting me know it arrived.

ASK BK DAY
What magazines (if any) do you subscribe to at home?

From last evening......... Thank you, Dakota.

The discussion on the radio this morning is the increase of heating costs this winter around the country. From what I have heard, the projection is between 4% and 16% depending on the source of your heat. The biggest increase is in propane costs. Do very many people actually heat their homes with propane?

Good morning, all! The post office, the bank, Toyland, and a summit meeting are all parts of my agenda today before 1 pm. Oy! After that, life's a pice of cake. I hope.
Yesterday I ordered my tickets for YANK, a musical from the 2005 NYMF being done in Brooklyn by the Gallery Pllayers. Chris Carfizzi, who auditioned for "The Brain" and Chad, our Private Partz, are both in the show.
DR RonPulliam, since HANGOVER SQUARE is one of the chief influences on SWEENEY TODD and Sondheim's spoken several times about the Herrmann influence on the score, I can't believe it's taken so long for a DVD release. At a party in 1981, Steve told me that Anthony Perkins and I were the only two people he knew who had ever seen HANGOVER SQUARE.
DR Slingshot, I too thought the florist was funnier than Zubrick's new job as a lifeguard, and I missed the funny mustache that the florist wore in LA.
-
Oh, come on, you just know BK had to show Zubrick with his main squeeze!

To find out if the Broadway lockout will happen.
However, I did read that Poppins is in a non-League theatre, and so is unaffected.

DR Cillaliz yesterday you mentioned the movie ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (the Beatles movie).
I have not seen it but would like to very much. I saw a preview of it quite a while ago (i think it was when i saw HAIRSPRAY). It's directed by julie taymor (THE LION KING). I think it looks great (but odd).

RE: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS RESULTS
SPOILERS

*
*
I was really happy with who left last night. HE was clearly the worst. I am a little surprised since i feel like people like him (wayne newton) and marie osmond are popular yet not as good as some of the others. I bet she'll be around for a while.
I feel bad for the boxer floyd being in the bottom 2. He has a lot of potential. I guess he doesn't have long. Same with mark cuban.
I think all the woman are popular. So it will be interesting to see who goes first. I would have thought the Spice Girl would go first.
My favorite is definitely helio and julianne.
-
I got to see tonight's PUSHING DAISIES last night (it airs a night ahead here) (NO SPOILERS).
I liked it. ANd i even liked Kristin Chenoweth more this week.
Does anyone know how old her character is supposed to be.
If the lead guy is late 20s. And kristin's character has a crush on him. Then is she supposed to be the same age? That was actually one of the things that seemed off to me last week. I thought that the 2 leads were supposed to be early 20s. and Kristin to me looks mid 30s or more.
-
Here's an amusing vignette from Peter Filichia's column today:
Harnick was walking by a record store and saw in the window an LP of The Body Beautiful. “It even had our poster on the cover,” he says, still sounding astonished, “so I went in and found that it was an illegal recording made through the theater’s sound system. I called Tommy Valando, our publisher, and told them that he had to blow the whistle on this and stop the sales - tomorrow, after I'd bought six copies for myself.”
-
Who was Zubrick's main squeeze?
In the flash forwards at the end, Zubrick comes out with a bottle of suntan lotion and squeezes out an overly-healthy amount, asking who needs some lubing (or some such phrase).

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.
-
MATT AND BEN - that's the title of...oh, that's been done
-
DR Ron Pulliam - I did not know that Hangover Square had been released on DVD - thanks for the heads up!
I think you have to buy the set (less than $20 for the three films). I'm not sure it's been released as a separate entity.
-
BK, I have the DVD to "Sunrise," also. I think it's a beautiful movie. :)
I have it, too, and it's one of the masterpieces of the silent cinema. Janet Gaynor richly deserved her Best Actress Oscar (though she won for performances in three films during that year of eligibility).
-
Good morning!
It has been a moderately cool morning today, but the highs are only supposed to be in the low 80s today (instead of the 90s as we had yesterday). Tomorrow promises a great drop in temperatures (FINALLY) as it appears fall will now join us full-time.

Here's an amusing vignette from Peter Filichia's column today:
I bought that same album myself. And though the mail, so I guess his efforts to stop its publication weren't very successful.
-
Ah, I see that Matt and Ben have joined me. Good morning to Matt and Ben!
Good morning to you, DR Jeanne.
-
I finished listening to the audio commentaries for THE INVISIBLE this morning. Writer Mick Davis has a lilting Scottish brogue, but he sure didn't have much to say. I don't know why they'd give him a separate commentary track instead of just editing his few (and rahter inconcequential) comments into the main track with the director.
-
Today I'd like to catch up on the TV that's still awaiting viewing on the DVR: CSI: MIAMI, BOSTON LEGAL and SVU.
If Criterion's new issue of UNDER THE VOLCANO comes in today, I'll watch that in the early evening before prime time starts. If it doesn't arrive today, I'll start on THE HOAX about the Clifford Irving/Howard Hughes bio scandal.
-
I am all alone here!
-
DR Slingshot, I too thought the florist was funnier than Zubrick's new job as a lifeguard, and I missed the funny mustache that the florist wore in LA.
DITTO! And I liked the homage to La Cage ...
(Case wore a similar funny mustache in Moon Over Buffalo -- and it made me laugh then, too. So note to any directors casting Cason in a comedy -- put him in a funny mustache -- a guaranteed laugh)

I thought about DR Elmore this morning when I read that MGM is coming out with a holiday DVD box next week that contains MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS (allegedly remastered) along with THE BISHOP'S WIFE and POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES.
I know the Laurel and Hardy MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS/BABES IN TOYLAND is very different from the original. I've been toying (no pun intended) with buying this since I don't have the other two films either. I guess I'll wait to see some reviews on it.

Glad to see my sis is here. How's the schoolwork, Sis?
Overwhelming -- but I'm a survivor, kiddo!
-
I've never had a biological sister--only one or two virtual ones--so this "Sis" business is new and fun!
One of my "virtual sister" stories:
I have a friend who lives in Canada who I used to travel with often. EVERYONE would look at us, pause for a second, then say, "Ah! You're sisters!" EVERYONE! When we'd try to explain that we're just friends, they wouldn't believe us! We HAD to be relations. Do we look alike? No, but we had somewhat similar haircuts and both wear glasses. It was hysterical.

I like the Levain idea. Jose's at rehearsal, I think. I wonder if JRAND can levitate the Levain and drop them off at our respective places of work/leisure.

DR Ron Pulliam - I did not know that Hangover Square had been released on DVD - thanks for the heads up!
Well, it certainly didn't happen with any fanfare. I "stumbled" across news of it a few months ago at some "horror film" site I was linked to for a different purpose.
It's quite the treasure, IMO.

Thanks for this reminder, Larry. I'd read that, of course. It certainly isn't like "Hangover Square" has been "available" much. I never saw any listings for it back in the day when AMC aired Fox product. And no one ever mentions it on the film score monthly messageboard in any way other than as a score written by Herrmann.
I daresay the preponderance of Herrmann fans have never seen the film.
-
Oh, pa-shaw -- ya gotta love the Irish!!
Why? They don't make Levain cookies.
der Brucer
-
The Sondheim connection was the primary source of my interest in the film [and the score].
-
Hey, if some Levain arrive, put one aside for me, pls. I got some work I gotta do for a bit.
You'd better PM Ben with that request -- I'm not the one to ask about rationing, saving or putting aside things like Levains, Monkey Cake, etc.
-
And swoon I did, DR Singdaw!
Dear DR Elmore once made me a compilation CD of Felix Knight songs, and I treasure it.

Remodeling home stretch vibes appreciated--the floor guy should finish sealing the floors today (a bit smelly, but at least quieter than the sanding phase, which was G-dawful). He's using a supposedly environmentally friendly water-based sealant, which makes me wonder what the non-environmentally friendly stuff smells like. Then tomorrow they move in our new appliances, which have been residing in our garage for the past 2 months. Friday morning the countertop people arrive to install the new countertops, then in the afternoon, the finish electrical and plumbing stuff gets done. All that will be left is one final coat on the floors (probably next Monday). Oh and paying the final bill of course, which merits a special Oy in and of itself. It has been a long, slow slog.

Here's a question for our esteemed BK -
Under what circumstances would you wear pink?
While I would think pink, I don't know that I'd ever wear pink - never have, that I can remember - it's not my favorite color. Nothing against it, really.
-
I bet he can because Jupiter and Uranus have come into their third square pattern (isn't that right JRand?)
I had to laugh when I read a horoscope for yesterday -- here all along I had been kidding JRand about all HIS planetary euphemisms -- it's how all of those folks write:
"Anticipate big (Jupiter) shake-ups (Uranus) in society .... Adding to the misery today are a Mars-Neptune abrasive and potentially confusing 135-degree tie -- and a shocking and electrifying Sun-Uranus parallel..."
-
ASK BK DAY
What magazines (if any) do you subscribe to at home?
I used to be quite a magazine subsciber in those days when you'd get those publisher's clearing house deals (in the late 70s) - I took Time, Newsweek, New York, and several others. Haven't subscribed to anything in years, although for reasons unknown to me, the Hollywood Reporter started arriving in the Kritzerland mailbox about four months ago and it comes daily. I don't read it.
-
I find the on-line political quiz games (matching your views with candidates very frustrating) - I posted the following on another chat board that was beating the quiz to death:
I have problems giving YES/NO answers to ill-defined questions.
"Do you favor or oppose the concept of universal health care in America?"
Well, I favor the concept of every US resident having reasonable access to vital health care - but the devil is in the details (what is "reasonable", what is "vital").
I do not, however, favor a tax-payer funded system of "Universal Healthcare (i.e. a single-pay Canadian system).
So, how do I answer? I chose to put my emphasis on "concept", and answered "yes", which threw my profile far to the left. I could have chosen to read "tax-payer" funded into "universal" and answered "No", which would have thrown my profile to the right.
Answers to other issues can also be misread - I fully support the state's right to "take a life for a life, but feel that as practiced in our country capital punishment is not a deterrent to crime, the administration of the process of prosecuting capital crimes is flawed, and the added expense of such prosecutions is a waste of tax payer dollars. So do I "support capital punishment" - a big YES in theory, a definite NO in practice.
I do feel a pregnant women has no "right" to have an abortion, at tax-payer expense, but feel it is good public policy to provide same.
How do I 'lean" on the 2008 Presidential Race? Well presented with Clinton vs Keyes or Richardson vs Brownback, The Democrat gets my vote. Presented with Clinton vs Giuliani or Edwards vs Mc Cain, the Republican gets my vote. Other match-ups still have me pondering the problem of "lesser evils". Presented with a third party challenger with little chance of success, I will vote for one of the principals, presented with Bloomberg and a fair shot of derailing a Kerry vs Romney candidacy, the Independent gets my vote.
Black and white questions do not work well in a grey world.
But, the game is entertaining, so I play.
der Brucer
NOTE: I am not inviting debate on my positions, merely pointing out the problem of evaluating the results of Yes/No type quizs.
-
Ask BK: What is this mentoring program of which you speak? Is it through something formalized, like ANMT? Or did writers seek you out and ask for mentoring?
The writer asked me to do it - it's turned into a LOT of work, but I like this sort of thing and always find it interesting, and the process is certainly interesting for the writer. He's paying for it, so that's always nice, too.
-
On that shocking and electrifying Sun-Uranus parallel, I will make my exit -- things to do, papers to write, rooms to clean, and hedges to trim ... Ciao!

I also thought West Hollywood worked better, and I'm sure we'll put it back the way it was. Actually, the change was recommended to me by someone elmore knows - as it turns out all this guy's suggestions were awful - he told me gay people in NY wouldn't put up with the West Hollywood reference.

WHAT'S IN A WORD?
CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/10/10/us.turkey.armenians/index.html)
White House: Genocide resolution could hurt relations with key ally
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Bush administration Wednesday lobbied heavily against a House resolution that labels the killings of Armenians in Turkey during World War I as "genocide," saying it would hurt relations with a key U.S. ally.
…
The nonbinding proposal, which is to be considered by the House Foreign Affairs Committee, acknowledges the "genocide" of Armenians in the early 20th century during the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, which preceded the creation of modern Turkey in 1923.
"In the case that Armenian allegations are accepted, there will be serious problems in the relations between the two countries," said President Abdullah Gul in a letter to President Bush, who staunchly opposes the resolution.
Nabi Sensoy, Turkey's ambassador to the United States, told CNN the resolution's passage would be a "very injurious move to the psyche of the Turkish people."
He predicted a "backlash" in the country, saying there will be setbacks on several fronts: Turkish-American relations, Turkish-Armenian relations and the normalization of relations between the nations of Turkey and Armenia.
Defense Secretary Robert Gates said good relations with Turkey are vital because 70 percent of the air cargo intended for and 30 percent of the fuel consumed by the U.S. forces in Iraq flies through Turkey.
U.S. commanders, Gates said, "believe clearly that access to airfields and roads and so on in Turkey would very much be put at risk if this resolution passes and the Turks react as strongly as we believe they will."
"Our heavy dependence on the Turks for access is really the reason the commanders raised this and why we're so concerned about the resolution," Gates said.
The LA denizens might remember:
1972 – A Bloody Day in Santa Barbara
On a sunny Santa Barbara day on January 27, 1972, 34 years ago, Gourgen Yanikian, a U.S. citizen of Armenian origin, murdered in cold blood the Los Angeles Turkish Consul General, Mehmet Baydar, and his Vice Consul, Bahadir Demir. He invited the two diplomats to his hotel master suite to “gift an antique carpet to the Turkish Ministry of Culture as a symbol of his appreciation of Turkey.” Baydar and Demir, having grown up with Turkish Armenians, and who often gathered with local Armenians in Los Angeles, had no reason to believe that the meeting would be nothing but a pleasant social event. After seating his guests in the living room and exchanging niceties over cups of tea, Yanikian went to his bedroom to bring “the carpet”, but instead came out with a loaded weapon. Yanikian proceeded to massacre the diplomats execution style. Afterwards, Yanikian cleaned himself up, went down to the reception desk, and turned himself in to the authorities. He was tried in the Superior Court of the State of California for the County of Santa Barbara, convicted of first-degree murder, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

I used to play bridge with the guy when I was helping host games in Chico State Prison. (He had no remorse whatsoever!) When he was dying, the CA Armenian-American Governor set him free

I have not watched much of anything on my new TV thus far.
I did order a region free upconvert DVD player today...which should be here soon...then we shall see what we shall see.
And I did buy the HDMI cable for the Comcast DVR box. I still need to buy that fancy 3 pronged dealybob for the DVD/VHS recorder.
I will await my new fangled contraptions before I decide if this purchase was worthwhile.

My grade school friend John Alexander passed away on Monday. He was about a month older - no details in the paper, except for a sister that I didn't know he had.
His mother and father owned the movie theatre in town The Ritz and the liquor store that was next door.

Did you ever get your high def TV hooked up to receive "HD" broadcasts?

My question for ASK BK day - to start with:
What pulp novel (we probably never heard of) would you like to adapt for the screen?
Don't know if they're quite considered pulp, but I'd adapt any Cornell Woolrich - especially Night Has A Thousand Eyes and The Black Curtain, both of which had botched films made from them.

Hello. I ended up calling in sick again today even though I had originally planned to go to work today. I got up at 6:30 and got dressed, drove the Vixter to school (all of 2 blocks away but it is across a very busy road which I don't want her crossing especially when it is still dark out these days) I came back home and was absolutley exhausted by these limited activiities. So I went back to bed reset the alarm for 8a;30. called the boss. called the offoce and then went back to sleep and slept until after 1.
I guess I needed it.

I am still feeling kind groggy so I will go and have some tea

I thought about DR Elmore this morning when I read that MGM is coming out with a holiday DVD box next week that contains MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS (allegedly remastered) along with THE BISHOP'S WIFE and POCKETFUL OF MIRACLES.
I know the Laurel and Hardy MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS/BABES IN TOYLAND is very different from the original. I've been toying (no pun intended) with buying this since I don't have the other two films either. I guess I'll wait to see some reviews on it.
The Laurel & Hardy version was my first trip to Toyland, and, much as it strays from the intent and purpose of the original show, I thnk it's dark and spooky - which is good - and a million times better than any future remake and that's fantastic!
Back from a good luncheon meeting, and I'm carting around a forthcoming 700 page bio of Victor Herbert to read and provide a blurb in the next few days.
-
Victor Herbert....I loved him in SAMSON AND DELILAH.
-
I have the Goodtimes DVD release of MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS, but I will pick up the MGM one as well, sine I LOVE that movie.
Charlotte Henry is just so darn cute, and Felix Knight just makes me swoon! :D
They were going to give an award once to the geriatric actor who didn't make you swoon They're still looking.
-
And swoon I did, DR Singdaw!
Dear DR Elmore once made me a compilation CD of Felix Knight songs, and I treasure it.
DR Jose isn't the only enabler on HHW, I guess.
-
Has anyone clapped with one hand yet?
I never thought you could get the clap with one hand!
-
Which brings me to this question, as I have no recollection of your ever having mentioned it:
Did you ever get your high def TV hooked up to receive "HD" broadcasts?
Well, I am not sure. I attached the HDMI cord to the cable box which is HD capable, it says on the front. Now, I have not called Comcast to determine if I received HD or not...if it costs extra, then I probably do not have HD...yet. I guess I ought to call them.
-
But if he had showed up to receive the honor in full Edna regalia, would they have let him in?
The Queen wouldn't laugh to give a knighthood to a queen?
-
No word on the possible lockout on Broadway. One would think there would be some news, as Wednesday matinees are to begin shortly.
A friend who subs on THE LION KING told me he was specifically requested to not show for the matinee so that the original player could be there.
-
Back from errands and am happy to announce our newest edition to the fundraiser - Miss Vicki Lewis. Wonderful.
I love Ms Lewis! Is she still with Mr Nolte?
She dated Jason Graae in college. That's scary!
-
I am still feeling kind groggy so I will go and have some tea
Have some grog! Then you won't care if you're groggy.
Oh, God, I sound like Francois!
-
The Queen wouldn't laugh to give a knighthood to a queen?
I'm not sure a CBE is a knighthood, but do I care?
-
I just spoke to Comcast...Mark was his name...and he informed me that I am already receiveing HD TV...I just need to tune into those particular channels..which I shall do so..I have just never gone up into the 700s yet, I guess.
-
..I have just never gone up into the 700s yet, I guess.
Channels, folks. He was talking about channels.
;)
-
DR JoseSPiano - what ever happened to the visit to NYC from your niece and nephew - wasn't that going to be over this past weekend?
Good question. I actually think it's now this coming weekend when they're coming up. ??? I tried calling them last week, but my Mom kept answering the phone - my parents were up there visiting for a few days - and she didn't knew when and if they were coming up either.
-
And as for the lockout, well... There will be a lot of pre-show meetings tonight... :-\ We shall see.
-
Well, we're done for the day, and I think I'm going to head back home for a bit. And then possibly to the theatre tonight. So...
*And I still have to catch up on the posts from last night and this morning...

Is one of them...
ANDREA McARDLE?
Oooh, but you're cruel! (I like that in a man; better than being DOA).
-
Had a full afternoon of viewing.
I began with Monday night's CSI: MIAMI. The jury is still out about my continuing with the show. The character I want to rejoin the staff is still being kept at arm's length (absurdly). The next couple of weeks should seal the deal one way or the other.
-
Page Nine Harry Potter Dance!!!
-
Yes, DR MBarnum, just like those nieghbors who asked me to come over and calibrate their set. They complained that HD didn't look even as good as standard def used to look on their old set, and I saw that they weren't watching hi def channels. Once I showed them the high def section of the cable listings (200 and above), they couldn't BELIEVE the difference.
There really is no comparison.
-
Next, I watched last night's BOSTON LEGAL. Alan had a stirring summation at the end of his case that will likely be Spader's Emmy submission for next year. Probably the best I have ever seen him.
And, as predicted, all the new lawyers sleeping with the old lawyers (or the old laweyers wanting to sleep with the new ones; it's SO predictable) - what I called a show "feeding on itself."
-
SVU had an interesting story of teacher/student rape last night which spiraled into something even uglier. Powerful show.
-
AS THE WORLD TURNS had the gay characters today, and previews appear to have them on tap for tomorrow, too.
I have to say that hospital must be the quietest, LEAST busy place on the face of the earth.
Soaps - you gotta love 'em.
-
I had about 80 minutes left in the afternoon so I put in BABES IN ARMS and turned on the John Fricke commentary. A superb commentary track (with a surprising number of places where he doesn't speak, unusual for one of his commentaries) with information about the supporting actors and bit players as well as the stars and the folks behind the scenes. Very complete.
-
The video and audio of BABES IN ARMS is OK but there are some rough patches, particularly with the sound.
-
UNDER THE VOLCANO did not come today, so when I go back down, I'll be watching THE HOAX.
-
Oh, I did also get the new season of NCIS in the mail from Paramount today.

If you have a HDTV can you still view your old, non-HD DVDs & VHS tapes on it?
If you have a non HD TV can you watch HD DVDs on it?

MattH
If you have a HDTV can you still view your old, non-HD DVDs & VHS tapes on it?
If you have a non HD TV can you watch HD DVDs on it?
Yes to both questions.
1. DVDs being a digital medium have the potential to look very good on HDTVs, and with the right players and a good DVD transfer can look close to HD in quality. VHS tapes can be viewed, of course, but they are so low in resolution that they're never going to look as sharp and clear as a DVD.
As for HD-DVDs (and Blu-ray discs) on non-HD sets, the players have the capability to downconvert the 1080p images via any of the video outputs (composite, S-video, component, HDMI) to 480i which analog TVs can read. (Though why anyone would ever want to do this, I can't imagine.)

Hello DR LAURA.....the checkerboard queen!!!
-
I have a question.
What, exactly, is the performance of LEGALLY BLONDE on MTV supposed to accomplish for the production?
Is it supposed to increase ticket sales, pick up sluggish ticket sales, promote the theatre experience, or what?
I don't get it?
-
Is it going into regular MTV rotation, meaning once or twice a week for the next month or so?
Is it being used to sell DVD's or CD's?
I don't understand.....

Actually the three next Bollywood movies playing at the Valley Theater up in Beaverton all look good. I plan on seeing at least one or two of them, and my buddy Jim may join me...of course he has now clue what he is in for. Thanks - wel,l I was wondering as we do not presently have an HDTV but presumably will have to get one sometime in the future when our present TV finally bites the dust, whether all the DVDs we own now would be rendered useless.... also I was wondering if they start only putting out new DVDs inthe HD format (as I assume they will start to do at some point, just as VHS seems to have disappeared from the new reelases) if I will still be able to watch them on my current TV

From last night:
DR Singaling, the cats still haven't been introduced to the porch yet. We have to install a doorknob that latches so they won't be able to push open the door and get out. Greg has been working non-stop since we got back, and I am clueless in matters of carpentry.
DR Cillaliz, my cats do take naps, but would prefer that we played with them 24/7.
-
They did the CAT scan today. I hadn't been eating or drinking very much since Saturday so to have to drink all that barium and then more after I got there, well, not enjoyable.
And they did another test at the same time which involved injecting iodine into my vein (this time the tech did better.) They said they'd call with results in the next few days. I was exhausted and came home and took a nap, and now I'm back editing again.
-
Good health vibes to those who need them, and healing vibes to DR Kerry.
-
Td, how is Evil Twins DC Sylvester doing? Please send my best of vibes the surgery solves the problem. It didn’t use to. I hope it has a greater success rate these days. I also know how painful & horrendous the condition is that leads to the surgery. I won’t go into detail about our poor boy Sinbad.
-
Remodeling home stretch vibes appreciated--the floor guy should finish sealing the floors today (a bit smelly, but at least quieter than the sanding phase, which was G-dawful). He's using a supposedly environmentally friendly water-based sealant, which makes me wonder what the non-environmentally friendly stuff smells like.
It is horrendous and you have to move out of the house while they are doing it.
Congrats on approaching the final stretch :)

Sorry to be errant an truant, but I had no choice. This site has intoduced me to angels and lovable scoundrels and amazingly talented people. DR Laura, Sandra Jeremey are three such angels and deserve the HHW Academy Award and Nobel Prize. They have gone beyond the call of duty to take care of me. I am lucky indeed to know them! My leg seems to weigh about 500 pounds but other than that, I shall appreciate my luck. I need to lie down now and rest my 500 pound leg.

The 500 Pound Leg - that's the title of my next novel.

Boneless pork ribs and sauerkraut, to which I've added sliced apple and a couple of sweet peppers from the bunch I picked up at Tuesday's farmer's market. Topped the whole mess with lots of caraway seeds and fresh black pepper, wrapped foil over the cooking vessel, and slid it all into a 300 degree oven where it will stay for a couple of hours. (For der B and myself, this counts as dining early).
To be accompanied by mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy.
-
I just spoke to Comcast...Mark was his name...and he informed me that I am already receiveing HD TV...I just need to tune into those particular channels..which I shall do so..I have just never gone up into the 700s yet, I guess.
Sooooo....in essence, you haven't seen an HD broadcast yet. I will be very interested to read your reaction once you've seen one.

Good Evening!
So... While walking up from Ripley-Grier though Times Square on my way up to Columbus Circle, I noticed a couple of "interesting" things. There were cops standing in front of almost every theatre. And on 45th Street where there are currently three or four shows loading in right now, both sides of the streets had a pretty visible police presence. And as I watched some people coming out of various stage doors, they all seemed to be carrying big bags filled with personal items and/or their instruments. Hmm.... :-\
-
Wasn't Jose just talking about David Burnham last week?
Why, yes, I was. Glad to know that someone reads and remembers my posts. ;) *And DR singdaw also mentioned him too.
He sings "As Long As Your Mine" on his CD with Eden Espinosa. Maybe they could sing it at your benefit.
-
DR JoseSPiano - do you like Judy Kuhn's new CD?
Yes. Although, I also love Laura Nyro's own originals, so... But "tribute" albums are never totally successful to me in general. However, I do like the album a lot, and it's just sooo nice to hear Judy Kuhn's voice again.
*And I noticed last week that all the Judy Kuhn "section" was empty, sold out, but this afternoon I did see that it was thoroughly restocked with both her Jule Styne album and her new one, "Serious Playground".
-
Uncle Jo Jo-
Do You have brand new Shoes???
No. I decided to forego going to Macy's yesterday since it looked like the forecasted thunderstorms were about to begin when I left the rehearsal studio. Of course, the rain did not materialize until around 10:00 last night. I have a brief rehearsal session tomorrow mid-day, so I may head to Macy's before or after, or before and after my rehearsal.

Speaking of the upcoming MTV broadcast of Legally Blonde... As well as wearing pink...
*POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING! - Comments are made throughout this "montage" about Legally Blonde as well as what happened during the live taping. -Which may or may not explain the delayed broadcast date.

I'll be talking to DR EvilTwin later this evening, I'll keep you posted.
-
DR Cillaliz yesterday you mentioned the movie ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (the Beatles movie).
I have not seen it but would like to very much. I saw a preview of it quite a while ago (i think it was when i saw HAIRSPRAY). It's directed by julie taymor (THE LION KING). I think it looks great (but odd).
Thanks. I called Paul, who doesn't usually keep up on musical things and he said he was dying to see this, so we're planning to see a matinee this weekend.
-
Greetings one and all...
Things have quieted down a bit....
I should be back on my puter early next week. I will be out of town over the weekend for a wedding.

RE: last night's DANCING WITH THE STARS RESULTS
SPOILERS
*
*
OMG, circle this day on the calendar. We agree, DR Jennifer. ;D Except, I don't geel sorry for the boxer. He is trying, but he really isn't a very good dancer
-
I have taken the plunge... I am going to take grad school classes next spring...
Pray... Research Methods with the Filetmaster....
-
I am hoping the filetmaster is a rumour and it is actually the Preppy from 80s. He is a cool dude!
-
Question for one and all DRs....
One of my students was working on a speech for speech on people who lived in the 1980s and she was curious about the music and lingo. She worked really hard on her speech and delivered it this afternoon to a warm reception by her audience. She even looked up some of hte phrases from the early 80s that came from Valey Girl and died of laughter when I did "Its like so bitchen!"
That got us into a discussion about music and she could see why her mother liked certain things.
When you were a teen or young adult what popular songs did you enjoy?
(My student's topic bit my curiosity bug)

Helloooooo!!!!

DR Kerry, is was a pleasant surprise to see you posting today. SPEEDY HEALING AND PAIN FREE VIBES!
-
Dakota, best of luck with grad school & getting a fantastic job when you are done.
-
DakotaCelt, during the 80s, I was listening to Sesame Street.
-
Reading this site always costs me something!! I just bought Judy Kuhn's new CD, and I think it's fantastic. For some reason the music of Laura Nyro has got passed me. It's really great stuff. I also purchased a Laura Nyro CD. Good times.
Also, totally not site related, I purchased John Rutters "Distant Land - The Instrumental Collection" which I hear is really good.
-
Yes. Although, I also love Laura Nyro's own originals, so... But "tribute" albums are never totally successful to me in general. However, I do like the album a lot, and it's just sooo nice to hear Judy Kuhn's voice again.

Oh, that was a picnic!
-
in response to my own question..
I liked ABBA, Madonna, Blondie, Elton John, Billy Joel, INXS to name a few...
Was never a Michael Jackson fan. However, I did like a song or two by his sister Janet.
-
Oh, that was a picnic!
Why do I detect sarcasm?

Recovery vibes for DR Ginny!

Currently watching "Pushing Daisies"... That was cute. :)

Feel better vibes for vixmom!

Feel better vibes for Jeanne!

Well I sat down in the recliner and turned on the TV to relax....
ANOTHER SCHOOL SHOOOTING!
This one in Cleveland... the 14 year old boy who was the shooter is dead, 2 teachers and 2 students shot, I did not know their condition
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/10/10/cleveland.shooting/?iref=mpstoryview
Truly sad and troubling.

I am happy when PBS can come in... :)

AS THE WORLD TURNS had the gay characters today, and previews appear to have them on tap for tomorrow, too.
I have to say that hospital must be the quietest, LEAST busy place on the face of the earth.
Soaps - you gotta love 'em.
Have you been following the story surrounding Carly?
-
DR Matthew - Have you watched "A Home At the End of the World"? Laura Nyro's music is featured in that movie too. -Alas, Colin Farrell's "talent" ended up not being featured in the final version of the movie. ;)
-
:)
Currently watching "Pushing Daisies"... That was cute. :)
SPOILER!!!!!
Kristin Chenoweth sings.
No, on tonight's episode. Not just generally.
If Kristin can sing, can Ellen Green be far behind in doing the same?
-
Healing vibes to DR Kerry....

Maybe David Burnham will do this scene from Light in the Piazza at bk's benefit:

Yeah, but I'm sure a couple of DRs could show proof positive that those scenes were filmed. . .PAGING DR JASON. . . .
-
If Kristin can sing, can Ellen Green be far behind in doing the same?
I'm almost to the episode of HEROES (Season One) which features Ellen Greene, though I don't think that she'll be doing any singing. . .

Oops! It doesn't fit the theme of the evening...oh well!
And, DR ColeSlaw, it's not a PRIVATE performance!
(If it were it would be somewhere in Pennsylvania).
-
it's not a PRIVATE performance!
No Private Partz? :(
-
I love Judy Kuhn's voice. As for the Nyro material...it's interesting. I'm getting used to it. It's really kind of all over the place...very free form.
-
No Private Partz? :(
Not unless it's a partzing of the way. . . .

Thanks Jane and mingdaw...
I am hoping it is the preppy guy teaching it....

No, wait, that was by Terry Gilkyson, long before Menkin or Schwartz wrote anything for Disney.

The Filet Valet?
The ironic part is she is only 5'3...
Men over 6 feet are terrified of her....

Time to finish getting dinner on the table. Later.

That is why it was presented as nothing more than a game. They clearly stated that taking the test would not detemine who you voted for in the actual election.

I have taken the plunge... I am going to take grad school classes next spring...

Why do I detect sarcasm?
I cannot speak for Mr Kimmel, but she led everyone a merry dance. And if you have a copy of Ms Kuhn's Styne album, look for any acknowledgment of my work from her. On the positive side, "You'll Never Get Away from Me" is one of the best things I ever orchestrated.

Me too. But then I found Imodium.

And, yes, I used to enjoy doing figure drawing.
If I ever meet that hunky Mike Barnum in person, you know what I'll be thinking! :)
Gladiator movies?

Time for a bit of dinner then on to rehearsal. Have a good evening, all! :)

Aha! I think I won this round of cat vs human.... Every night Boo does the claws on the couch thing. It really makes me mad..negative attention is still attention....Anyway, tonight I wrapped the couch and chair in tin foil. LOL, you should have seen the cats, they were baffled. But, Boo didn't touch it and came to sit on my lap.
Maybe if I leave it there a few days I can break her of this habit
-
Today at the Meijer store while I was buying my hot dogs, there was a man in front of me who was about 80 years old....and he was buying a 26" HDTV which they were helping him with.
I HOPE HE HAS SOMEONE TO HELP HIM HOOK IT UP.....I almost volunteered to follow him home....but instead I am just sending him vibes.
I didn't know that you went for younger men.

Back from errands and am happy to announce our newest edition to the fundraiser - Miss Vicki Lewis. Wonderful.
Miss Vicki Lewis! Is she bringing Lamp Chop? :D
-
I should have two or three more people to announce shortly.
I hope Donny Osmond is one of them. Dear Reader Laura really wants to attend that fundraiser.
-
I never thought you could get the clap with one hand!
Depends on whose hand you use.

Damn, too bad I cant get to LA.... I want to see Matt!

DR TCB - I prefer David standing still. ;) Well... ;D

in response to my own question..
I liked ABBA, Madonna, Blondie, Elton John, Billy Joel, INXS to name a few...

May our trio of HHW Lovelies [DRs Jeanne, Ginny, and Vixmom] continue to feel better & better.
Thank you, Sing.

No sooner did I get back home from dropping off the Vixter then the doorbell rang and there stood my brother. So we sat and had a chat for a while and then Vixdad came home and Brother departed
I snooozed a little in the reclibner.. Vixdad picked up the Vixter and now I am going to bed
Hi Ho what an exciting life I lead!!

Thank you all for the continued vibes... I must go to work tomorrow

Our company has left, the cheesecake is gone & the wine is getting to me now. We had a lovely evening. After all these years here it is nice to finally have neighbors we socialize with.

The tinfoil is working so far. After much investigation, neither cat is interested in the couch or chair. Of course, I am hopin no one stops by, lest they think I am protecting my couch and chair from alien waves of some sort
-
DR Samantha should be in Florida by now to see one of her aunts on her mother's side of the family
-
I'm watching Life briefly...there was just a line "His weakness is his strength. It's like a one handed clap"
-
The tinfoil is working so far. After much investigation, neither cat is interested in the couch or chair. Of course, I am hopin no one stops by, lest they think I am protecting my couch and chair from alien waves of some sort
;D
Better than the alternative, meaning the damage to the furniture.
-
Jeanne, are you feeling better?
Yes, thanks. I was REALLY tired today, but at least didn't feel ill. In case you're interested, I'm using Natrum Muriaticum (a homeopathic remedy, for those unfamiliar with it) for my head congestion. It's WONDERFUL for migraines and is THE headache remedy in general. But congestion? Something's working.
Whatever this bug is it's REALLY tenacious.
BTW, I intended to reply to your second email, but just haven't been up to it. Will try to do so when I'm a bit stronger.
-
Dakota, you asked about popular songs, but you answered yourself with singers. Which did you want?
Overly long day... Songs I guess.... :)
For me It is
Dancing Queen -- ABBA
Lucky Star -- Madonna
I'm Still Standing -- Elton John
Uptown Girl -- Billy Joel
We Didn't start the fire.... -- Billy Joel
Heart of Glass -- Blondie
Rock this town -- Straycats
Jump Jive Wail - Cherry Poppin Daddies
Borderline -- Madonna
Girls Just want to have fun -- Cyndi Lauper
Naughty -- Janet Jackson
Africa -- TOTO
Time after Time --Cyndi Lauper
Take on Me -- Ah HA
I saw the sign -- ACE of Base
Everybody Wants to rule the world -- Tears for Fear
Those are ones that come to mind right now...
-
Thanks to all for the good wishes.
-
Good night.
-
Definition of one handed clap
SPOILER....sort of LIFE
One guy slaps another across the face, the response was "Now that was a one handed clap"
-
'night Jeanne, and no rush. Keep on getting stronger.
-
Another song by ACE OF BASE I like is "Beautiful Life"
-
Safe travel and excellent visit vibes for samantha!
-
'night all, sleep well.
-
Have you been following the story surrounding Carly?
Not at all.
-
I finished BABES IN ARMS and saw for the first time the "My Day" sequence in the finale which I had only previously seen stills of. The sequence is in very rough shapes with scratches and debris galore (and blown up from a 16mm print), but it's there and now restored to the film.
-
Next I watched THE HOAX. Very intriguing to see how Clifford Irving almost pulled off the Howard Hughes bio hoax. Nice performances from a really first rate cast - Richard Gere, Alfred Molina, Marcia Gay Harden, Stanley Tucci, Zeljko Ivanek and an excellent production. A little artsy in some parts (counter to the structure of the rest of the piece), but it was the right length so it didn't wear out its welcome.
The DVD transfer is bothersome, however. Only average sharpness, contrast bumped up too much so they could match vintage footage, so the color looked plugged up.
Haven't explored the bonus features yet. Will do them tomorrow.
-
PUSHING DAISIES. Well, again a pleasant hour, but it's not grabbing me.
I don't like the character Chuck very much. I don't like the constant Jim Dale narration. Just too precious and I get tired of it before the end of the show.
I did like Kristin's song. She handled the transitions between chest and head voice beautifully.
-
This was the best PRIVATE PRACTICE episode I've seen. I found all of the cases interesting. I just wish the doctors/cast weren't all so damaged. Other than Taye Diggs (and the receptionist), not one of these people is on firm emotional ground, and this constant regret over lost love or lack of love is going to run pretty thin if that's going to be the focus of every single episode.
-
DIRTY SEXY MONEY had an OK episode, too. Again, I think for the show to continue to get my attention, we're going to need to see some more colors to their emotional make-ups. We're only three episodes into the season, and already I'm getting tired of the repetition of their one-note personalities week after week.
-

I did see the eppie last week and I felt that some of the characters seemed a bit flat with very little done to develop differents facets of their personalities .. I agree that they do need some 'color' in the sense of stronger personalities.
-
I have a bit of writing to do, so I'll tend to that now and then head down for bed.
Good night.
-
Anyone watch Super Nanny? They're shooting it about eight houses north of me.
-
Hmm. Do you see or hear the precious little out-of-control children from your house?
-
I hope Donny Osmond is one of them. Dear Reader Laura really wants to attend that fundraiser.
I am forever hopeful, DR TCB.
-
Had a full afternoon of viewing.
I began with Monday night's CSI: MIAMI. The jury is still out about my continuing with the show. The character I want to rejoin the staff is still being kept at arm's length (absurdly).
So, I guess I'm not the only one with the hots for who appreciates the acting skills of Jonathan Togo.

So TCB is officilaly the Wicked Wit of the West?
You could say that. . . ;D

I, too, saw "Pusing Daisies". Enjoyed it VERY much.
-
Earlier this evening, I watched "Journeyman". Really fine episode, IMO, but I'm wondering if it's placement right after "Heroes" (another Sci-fantasy) does it any favors. It's a wholly different kind of show and "Heroes" takes the viewer down a somewhat breathless path while "Journeyman" is a but more understated and deliberately paced.
-
Because I'm essentially pooped and ready for bed, I am recording "Life" which I will devour tomorrow evening after work.

...'PORGY AND BESS' opened on Broadway![/size][/shadow]
-
Greetings, oh wise ones -- I've come out to play for a bit.
-
It's a pain to have the new tv season coincide with a vacation. I have so many shows to watch. Forgettabout any new shows, er at least for a month or so.
-
I'm back from Montreal. I love my dear family, but I just can't get the hang of poutine -- french fries & a mild cheese, then smothered with a chicken style gravy.
-
I want to do an all-white production of Porgy and Bess. I mean, if Audra can do 100 In The Shade and Carousel, then I don't see why colorblind casting can't work both ways.
As Porgy: Hugh Jackman
As Bess: Jennifer Garner
As Sportin' Life: Joel Grey
As Crown: Billy Bob Thornton
-
Welcome back, Angela!
-
So, Ron -- what is pushing daisies about? And what part does Kristin play?
-
thanks BK
-
holey moley, new page!
-
BK -- looking forward to Two's Company. Watching Jason Graae -- one may need to wear a pair of depends!
