Last night, Annabelle, Thatch and I watched the 2nd half of the BBC adaptation of Trollope's "The Way We Live Now." It's quite amazing: Augustus Melmotte, mittel-European con artist, arrives in London with ponzi schemes and an powerful drive to become a Member of Parliament. A mix of Donald Trump and Bernie Madoff, David Suchet is amazing and terrifying in the role. The cast includes wastrel idiot sons, anti-semitic aristocracy, noble ideals, noble and profane love, deceptions in high and low places, and much chicanery.
There's little difference in Trollope's London of 1870 and this country now, except there's a sense of humor in Trollope. Annabelle, Thatch, and I find little to laugh at in US politics at the moment.
