Phil and Jackie Smith, owners of Acres of Books on Long Beach Boulevard, have agreed to sell the store s large lot to the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency for about $2.8 million. Relocation plans for the iconic store are uncertain. (Stephen Carr / Staff Photographer )

ACRES MAY CLOSE LAST CHAPTER

LONG BEACH - For locals like Stan Poe and S&e Reed, Acres of Books has been more than a bookstore to them.

The storefront on 240 Long Beach Blvd. has been a longtime source for researchers, writers and book enthusiasts who have combed its acres of dusty shelves for hours hoping to score rare specialized tomes and hard-to-find first editions.

Writer Ray Bradbury once said Acres "is the best walk-through multimedia experience, if not on Earth, if not in all America, at least in the western part of the United States."

"For book lovers, a lot of (coming to Acres) was the experience," Reed said. "You could get a book anywhere, but it's the smell of the bookstore, the smell of the old books, the store cat, the way you can get lost in it and escape the everyday. It's so much more than getting a book. It's the book-buying, book-browsing experience and Acres is one of the last places to do so."

I am pretty sure West Side Story was the first movie I ever saw in a theater. That's what my mom claims, at any rate.

EXACTLY.  How on earth has MBarnum missed out on Russ Tamblyn???

Oh, Russ has been interviewed by every Tom, Dick, and Harry already. Besides I would just want him to talk about his work in the film WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS.

DR Singdaw - in my work world, the answers to both "Communicating Bad News to a Customer" and "Understanding Customer Needs" would be:

"No, there aren't grants available for you to fix up your house, pay your bills, send your kid to private schools..."

Of course not - that is what private foundations are for :)

The earliest Sondheim that I remember experiencing was when I was a kid.  My sister and I would watch "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" whenever it was on TV.  We loved that movie, but I had no idea who Sondheim was.  It wasn't until I was in middle or high school when I discovered musicals and then Sondheim, and then realized that he wrote the songs for the movie that I loved as a kid!

Ah, yes, DR Ben.  We often deal with the fallout of someone having attended one of those conferences.

When I told my mother that people actually ask me where they can get a grant to pay their bills, she said, "Isn't that spelled L-O-A-N?"  I said, "Or J-O-B!"

The first Sondheim cast album I listened to (and subsequently bought) was Sweeney Todd (I now have them all!)

I have been in two (community theater) Sondheim shows:  I played Hero in Forum and I was George (Uncle Jocko's assistant) and a placard changer in Gypsy.  Next season, Capital Playhouse is going to do A Little Night Music.  I would love to be in that. :)

I don't remember what the first Sondheim show that I saw was. :-\ Otherwise, I've seen live community theater productions of West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Night Music, Company, Into the Woods, Passion, Assassins and Sunday in the Park with George

I've seen professional productions of Company, Follies, Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George.

On Broadway, I have seen Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park With George.

In London, I have seen Follies and Pacific Overtures.

I think I saw a community-theater production of Gypsy.

I would love to see A Little Night Music (I don't know the score at all) and Passion. I was always curious about Getting Away With Murder, his nonmusical play, but I guess there's little chance I'll ever be able to catch that now.

This morning the lawyers looked at their jury and decided to settle the case. Good thing; I'm not sure I could have stood six days of testimony about concrete.

I'm a Sondhead but I thought Getting Away with Murder was pretty bad. I do think most of the blame is Mr. Furth's, but there is enough blame to go around. It wasn't terribly funny (it was billed as a comedy thriller) and it was, as I remember, excruciatingly boring.

It was directed by Jack O'Brien of Hairspray (and other big Broadway hits) fame. It was done in California at the Old Globe Theatre (under a different title) in 1995. It moved to Broadway (after revisions) in 1996. Here is the cast list for Broadway:

Cast

Martin Chisholm - John Rubenstein
Dossie Lustig - Christine Ebersole
Young Man - William Ragsdale
Charmaine - Michelle Hurd
Pamela Prideaux - Kandis Chappell
Vassili Laimorgos - Josh Mostel
Gregory Reed - Terrence Mann
Dan Gerard - Frankie R. Faison
Nam-Jun Vuong - Jodi Long
Roberto - Al Espinosa
Dr. Conrad Bering - Herb Foster

Terrence Mann and John Rubenstein were the "big" names in the show but even they couldn't save it. The production got mixed to bad reviews and lasted for only a few performances.  and moved to Broadway. It ran from February 20, 1996 (previews begain) for 29 performances and opened on March 17, 1996 at the Broadhurst Theater. The run after opening was 17 performances and it closed on March 31, 1996.

I'm trying to remember the first Sondheim musical that i saw.  And i really can't remember. :(

I think my first broadway experience was A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM.

I know i've seen stage versions of: A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, COMPANY, SWEENEY, INTO THE WOODS.

I am trying to remember if I ever saw FOLLIES. :(

I wonder if seeing so many of Sondheim's musicals on tv (PASSIONS, SUNDAY, ITW...) is what is confusing my memory. Usually i'm much better at remember what i saw and where. :(

I don't think I'd ever have a question about this.  The score is unforgettable.

In today's UPS delivery:

Bette Davis box from Fox (with slimline cases)
Classic Musicals Box (with slimline cases)
I Am Legend (HD-DVD)
Battle of the Bulge (HD-DVD)

The Warner's Bette Davis box issued last week has the regular DVD cases, which I hate.

Well i have the cd. So it's not that.

For some reason i was wanting to see one of the last revivals (not the last one, but i think the one before). and right now my mind has just gone blank as to whether i saw it or not.

I agree it's pathetic!

Since I watched a MR. WONG movie this morning, I wanted to find something I had already seen to have on while I cooked and ate lunch.

I chose STARDUST: THE BETTE DAVIS STORY, the documentary that was a part of the second Davis box set. Enjoyable, even if the latter third of her career got short shrift.
