Ah DR VIXMOM....I feel your pain.
We subdivided a large property, put in streets, streetlights, sewer & waterlines, and turn berm on the road....and then the local zoning board decided (after we put up six homes) that no new construction could be done because of the airport and the noise pollution the homes would be subjected to. Talk about owning a road to nowhere!
Oh my! Butyou were on the other side, you were the builder? We know these guys have zero chance of being turned down. And the head of teh company sat in the back and had his snotnosed little 25 year old son run the meeting. He kept telling
us that they were doing this for the betterment of Deer Park, said if they didn't have this we would have to deal with a office complex. So I stood up and said we would welcome an office complex, the omnly traffic generated wouuld be the employees Mon - Fri, they would bring living wage jobs to the town, there wouldn't be night or weekend traffic and we wouldn't have packs of teenagers hanging around
What they are bring us are part time, miniumum wage jobs , heavy traffic when we are home from our jobs and the kids are home from school, and an attractive nuisence for those with too much time on their hands ....
This kid (who I have shoes older than) told me that perhaps I wasn't very well aquainted with the town, and that a office building would generate more traffic. I advised HIM that I had lived in this town since 1966, and that there used to be a Aerospace company employing 7500 peoeple on the exact site he wants to build on and I am extremely well aquainted with the type of traffic it generated.
I got applause and his daddy came up to take over the presentation
daddy gave us a lecture about how we should be "grateful" for their interest in the property and said (not in so many words,of course) that if we didn't watchput , they would just raze the current buildig there, and have their property taxes reduced to vacant land rates and then we'd be begging him to build
How to win friends and influence people huh?
