Good morning, all!

I'm listening to Irish songs sung by my late friend, tenor Frank Patterson, and mourning my other Irish-American heroes, Victor Herbert and the wonderful actor Barnard Hughes. I miss running into Barney on his daily jaunts up and down Broadway. I don't know if Barney and Frank ever met, although I suspect they must have at some point. I knew Frank from the early 1980s when he was doing one of his first Radio City St Patrick's Day shows with, I would swear, every Celtic performer in the eastern USA. I still get ASCAP royalties from his recording of one of my arrangements, "America the Beautiful," I believe.

I met Barney when I was working at Drama Book Shop, just before he went to Dublin to play the grandfather in "You Can't Take It With You" with the Abbey Theatre. I had known his wife Helen Stenborg for several years, and I adore her. When I did BABES IN TOYLAND for the Houston Grand Opera in 1991, I wanted Barney to play the Toymaker, and he was interested but tied up with the tv series BLOSSOM. I still miss him.

So, today I am having breakfast with Peter and Susanna Tarjan, Jerome Moross' daughter and son-in-law. After that, I have BABES IN TOYLAND work in my search for all the "Evaline McCook" corrections.  Not much else after that except work on WIZARD OF OZ.

Happy Saint Patty's Day to...ME!

And the others who might be so inclined, although I ignore the usual folderol that takes place on 5th Avenue and is usually attended by those who are, or will be drunk and unpleasant soon into the proceedings.

I had Irish soda bread and coffee (without the alcohol) for breakfast.

We had a good recording session with Dustin. I have to say he was one of the nicest, most down-to-earth and friendly famous people I've ever met. Drove himself to the session, picked up his own coffee, worked very hard and no attitude, just wanting to make sure we were getting the best that he could do. A real mensch. We're finishing up with him today, and this time he will probably forgo the creamy cold, phlegm-producing coffee drink.

It's always nice when you meet one of your faves and they turn out to be so great.

DR elmore - If you're heading down to Toyland via the 1 Train later, you may want to take the bus. Apparently, the downtown service on the 1, 2 and 3 trains has been majorly delayed this morning due to a "switch problem" at 72nd Street.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day:

Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table.  Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue playing standing up.

Michael O'Connor looks around and asks, "Oh, me boys, someone has got to tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?"

They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse.

"Discreet?" says Gallagher.  "I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name.  Leave it to me."

Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs. Murphy answers, and asks what he wants.

Gallagher declares, "Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home."

"Tell him to drop dead!,"
says Murphy's wife.

"I'll go tell him," says Gallagher.

I met some LA foodie friends (he's a producer for Lifetime whom I missed seeing when I was here last) at a great restaurant a block from our hotel in Santa Monica. Then my partner Peter, also a passionate foodie, met up with us later. It was fun just to sit back and listen to them talk! The restaurant is The Yard---great food, affordable, and owned by a very TALL Top Chef named C.J.

Question for BK...and/or anybody else who wants to answer:

[No disrespect is intended by this question.  I am just curious.]

There are a lot of good movies out there, and there are even more crappy movies out there.

I know, because I've written a few of the crappy ones.  Yes, I was paid to write them and, my only defense is that, in the vast majority of cases, what I wrote is not what finally wound up on the screen.

So, my question is: Why do we watch these crappy movies when we know, in front (from reviews or having seen it before), that they are crappy movies?

BK watched DADDY'S GONE A HUNTING last night.  He had seen it before.  He knew it was crap.  So, why waste two hours of your life that you will never get back again?

Is it nostalgia?

Maybe it is.  The other night, I watched THE DEADLY MANTIS and THE LAND UNKNOWN, both terrible...but I'd seen them in the theaters when I was a kid.

Like I said, no disrespect intended.  It's just a question for discussion.

I generally don't watch movies that I know to be crap (I rarely watch movies outside of the DVD, I resent paying $12.75 for, as you put it, crap). Some of my friends say they want mindless entertainment and crappy movies can provide that release but, as you said, why waste two hours of my life doing that.

There are times though when a crappy movie can be great fun (this is very, very rare for me). The example I use is Trog. Last Thursday we went to see it at Chelsea Cinemas (Where Dreams Come True). We all knew/know it was crappy from the start but we sat there and watched and laughed and had a great time reveling in the crappiness of it all. So, on the rare occasion that I succumb to bad movies it is for that kind of reason. Trog, Valley of the Dolls, Showgirls, Mahogany. All bad movies but great fun when you've paid $7.50, had a pre-show by Hedda Lettuce and the audience is in on the crap.
Title: Re: GREEN DAY
Post by: Matt H. on March 17, 2010, 07:33:05 AM
I find there to be comfort in watching the familiar if it's something that appeals to you initially. The quality is almost of secondary importance to its intrensic appeal. I find lots of joy watching crap like MYRA BRECKINRIDGE. I know it's awful, but there's fascination to be had in looking how it was put together and there's fun to be had in exploring the expanse of the frame.

In the case of watching something that didn't appeal to you originally, it's also true that a person's tastes may change over time and that one's life experiences allow him insight he might not have had at a different period of his life. I've certainly had a change of heart about films I didn't initially like. NASHVILLE is the one that comes instantly to mind. And you'll never know if your initial impressions were right for you if you don't revisit the films in question.

I watch crappy movies because it's nice to see what people are trying to do.  Almost every film has ONE redeeming feature - almost!

I like some of the performers, too.....  It's a comfort to see something you've seen before, a movie that won't challenge you....and of course there is the WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? factor as well.

Why do we listen to flop musicals? Or read novels that are considered an author's second-tier work? Because we're often fascinated by what the intent was and how that failed somehow in the execution. I think we sometimes draw more from an imperfect work than a perfect one. I would rather watch "At Long Last Love" than "Last Picture Show" because it boggles the mind how Peter Bogdanovich's idea went from being fairly interesting to being such a misbegotten mess on the screen. I would rather re-read Eliot's "Daniel Deronda" than go anywhere near "Silas Marner." And I would rather watch "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" than read some of Roger Ebert's more serious reviews. And sometimes we just want popcorn instead of foie gras.

There's no place on earth like the world

Never throw stones at yer mother

Never throw stones at yer mother

I don't think they so, DR JRand59, but I was happy to see the photos. Since Humpty Dumpty was a nursery rhyme character before Lewis Carroll gave him words, he could be in BABES, but he's not in the original. If this HD were created for a BABES production, it's one of the many altered/simplified versions that appeared wen the piece went into Public domain.

Nice to hear nice things about Dustin Hoffman.

He's very shy but very sly. I worked for him and his company Punch Productions on THE MERCHANT OF VENICE when I was at Drama Book Shop. I got a great Christmas gift from him and the staff. I first helped him as a clerk at DBS in summer 1979. I cannot remember now what he was looking for. When I was managing the Minskoff Rehearsal Studios in 1983, while he was rehearsing DEATH Of A SALESMAN, he was really wonderful to me. Did you know he paid for his acting classes by playing piano for dance classes? I always thought he'd be a wonderful Koko in THE MIKADO.

Name them and provide a personality profile and how close are you to each one.

PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK is either Pacino or DeNiro, not Hoffman.

More Hoffman info.  Thanks DR ELMORE.

Perhaps we should have a Dustin Hoffman performance day today.

I can't say I like him, I usually avoid him because he seems so mannered in his performances and gives a lot of "look at me" acting signals....IMO.

But - he has done some nice things.

Off the wall - I like him in STRAW DOGS.

I didn't know Hoffman could play piano until a Bette Midler TV special in which she stripped him while he was playing. it was hysterically funny. Wonder if that's on YouTube somewhere.

It's just a question for discussion.

a) I watch some of the new movies that have been called crappy because sometimes I do not agree with reviewers or the public.

b) Sometimes older movies age well and have redeeming qualities years later - that has happened quite a bit.  And sometimes I just don't remember enough and I want to see why I thought it was so bad.  With Daddy's Gone A Hunting it was simple - I wanted to hear the John Williams score again

I haven't been able to figure it out yet - what I'm trying to do is figure out a way I can go to Seattle then directly to Indiana and from there to New York - all over the course of a week.

On May 28, 2008, I posted this about Mr Hoffman:

In 1983 or 1984, I was filling in for the manager of the Minskoff rehearsal studios over Christmas vacation; Dustin and co. were rehearsing DEATH OF A SALESMAN there. Everyone was friendly except for John Malkovich. I was working on the Book-of-the-Month "Songs of New York" recording so every morning when Dustin came in, he saw me working on a full score of something or other. After two days, when he came in, he would say "Good morning, Mr Mozart (or Mr Schubert or Mr Strauss)," and I started yelling back to him "call me Wolfgang (or Franz or Johann)." The last day I worked at the studio was the birthday of one of the cast members and Dustin had them bring me a piece of birthday cake and plastic cup of wine.

One less for the memoirs . . .

It was actually the Christmas holiday of 1983-84.

My siblings from oldest to youngest.

Jack (real name John) b.1948. Died 1987.

Jack was the oldest in the family, and the brother I knew the least. He was 15 when I was born, and lived with his father during most of my childhood (he and all my older siblings were from my mom's first marriage)

He was always fascinated by planes and flew jets and helicopters during the Vietnam war. Part of his duty was to spray agent orange, something that would later be the cause of his early death at age 38.

After his discharge from the war he joined the State Police, and was still an officer, stationed in Bend, Oregon, when he passed away.

Sue: second oldest, and my only sister. She was 13 when I was born and thus was responsible for baby sitting me on many occasions. I idolized my sister when I was a kid, and today she is the sibling I am closest to both physically (she lives just outside of Salem) and emotionally. I am also very close to her two kids, but her husband drives me crazy some times (he is a very conservative, conservative)

Allen:

All of my big brothers were pretty darn nice to me as a kid, and Allen was especially so. He and his girlfriend of the moment would often take me and my little brother to the movies...THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD, TOWERING INFERNO, STAR WARS, CANNONBALL RUN, THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT, SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT....all movies I have vivid memoreis of him taking us to see. Most teenagers would not be so nice as to let the little rugrats join him on dates!

I don't see nearly as much of Allen as I would like as we live in different parts of the state. Our interests are also quite different...he is very much into hunting...but I love and respect him very much.

Jeff:
8 years my senior, Jeff is the smart one of the bunch. He was always good in school, while the rest of of struggled and  barely graduated. He is the only one to graduate college, and with an Engineering degree no less. He spent some time in the Coast Guard and now works in Portland for the Feds. Jeff is a good guy, but I wouldn't say were were ever very close. He did babysit on occasion, but basically holed up in his room talking to girls on the phone while my little brother and I had the run of the house...jumping on the furniture and watching things like LOVE AMERICAN STYLE. Jeff is a great guy and I enjoy talking to him when we get together, which is not nearly as often as it should be, seeing as how he lives in Tigard, which is only abour 45 minutes away.

Dan:
3 years younger then I, Dan was a thorn in my side from the very  beginning. I was a peace loving child and he was a bratty ruffian and ran roughshod over me for most of my early life. By 3rd grade he was running around with a bad crowd and by his early teens he was into drug use, although I didn't realize it. I just thought he had a really, really bad temper. He and I had no use for each other and it has only been in the last 10 years, since he sobered up, that we have had any kind of a brotherly relationship. I now enjoy his company, and he has more or less made ammends for his past with all of us.

Of course I have a ton of other half siblings and step siblings from my father's three marriages. My dad's son from his first marriage lives in Portland, but have not seen him since 1977. His two daughters I saw often as a kid, but have not seen now for almost 30 years. His step kids from his 3rd marriage..well, if I never see them again, it will be too soon. A bunch of white trash hillbillies who I never cared for. I saw them last at my dad's funural in 2001. Before that I hadn't seen them since 1983 when I moved out of my dad and stepmom's house.

DtM, I have been meaning to mention for some time, since your quote is from Nin, DS Betsy was hired to do a birthday comedy set for an elderly Jewish woman here in Portland from one of the 'old money' families.  This woman had been a personal friend of Anais Nin's, and Nin had come several times to her house to stay, so Betsy had to come up with a slew of Anais Nin jokes, no easy task.  :)

I have two and a half sisters.

Brigitte is 15 years older and lives in Germany. She was raised by my grandmother and only speaks German. My German isn't so good, so communication is hard. Yet I love her dearly and visit as often as possible, which isn't often enough. She has three children, four grand-children and one great-granddaughter.

Linda is six years older. Her birthday was yesterday. She wanted to be a writer and ended up working for an insurance company. She's a Pentacostalist, so we don't talk politics often. Actually, we don't talk as often as we should. She and her husband live in Richmond, Va., with their 19-year-old son, who has spent too much time in the South (a bit racist, Republican and red-necked replete with tattoos).

Annaliese is four years older than me. She lives in Lexington, Ky., with her husband and son, Herman, who's 11. In recent years, she's become a stage mother in the Rose mold, pushing her son into competition after competition. He wins many of them, because he has an angelic prepubescent voice, plays excellent French horn and percussion, and can ham it up. What happens after his voice changes will be another story. What happens when he finally tells her no will also be another story.

DR JRand, your siblings marriage history is almost as confusing as DR MBarnums parents. ;)

My brother is 6 years older than I am & my sister was 4 1/2 years older.  I was very lucky as a child to have older siblings who took me places with them, including outings with their friends & I adored them both.  My brother was smart & had/has a wonderful dry sense of humor & could make me laugh uncontrollably.  My sister was an artist & could recreate on paper anything she looked at.

Unfortunately my sister also encouraged me to skip my homework & do all sorts of things I shouldn't have been doing.  Admittedly some were great fun, others made me ill knowing they were wrong.  When I look back on my childhood I was lucky to have survived physically unscratched from many of her antics.  When I was 17 she began to turn on me.  This is the sister Keith saw & knew.  It really turns sad after that though I defended her for years.  The verbal abuse & manipulation I didn't understand as a child escalated.  Sometimes, though it would be best for you, one can't walk away from a family member because of the pain it would cause everyone else.  It still makes me cry to think of how it should have been, not how it was.

My brother & I have a great relationship & have gotten closer since our sister died.

Nice interview with Brett Claywell today about the departure of Kyle and Fish and the rumors being passed about the firing:

Now that Kyle and Fish are sacked, ONE LIFE TO LIVE is reverting to all the traditional soap idiocies. today, Jessica (who has amnesia after electroshock therapy and near rape by her psychopath father) who thinks she's 18 again (that gal's 40 if she's a day!) is vamping her high school sweetheart who won't give in or put out since he's invovled with another. He informed her that what she doesn't remember is that he married her sister. And when she starts pissing and moaning over what a jerk he is, he told her that she had already married his brother. Oy!

Yes.  AND...When her sister spoke on her behalf she was in the hospital getting proper treatment.  And the Cleveland Clinic said it had no intention of putting a lien on the woman’s house or letting the billing process interfere with her treatment.

I usually don't revisit bad movies all that much.  But I will watch movies that have bad reputations, probably out of curiosity.  I just noticed that TCM is showing PARNELL this afternoon...reputed to be Clark Gable's worst movie ever.  The few clips and snatches I've seen of it in the past would seem to confirm that.  But I've never seen it all the way through.  I'm debating watching it this afternoon, just to say I've seen it.

Ben, thanks for the Al Bowlly link.  Listening to it right now.

If I am remembering what Charlie told me, he also drove a cab for a while.  Did he do PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, or was that Pacino?  I get so confused sometime.  :)

Al Pacino was the star of PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK.

When I went down, I watched last night's IDOL. While there were no performances that bowled me over and made me sit up and take notice, 10 of the 12 finalists were accomplished enough vocally to not embarrass themselves. I did not like Andrew Garcia or Tim Urban. Everyone else was passable or better.

I truly do not see the makings of a music star out of this group, but there is always room for improvement. They still have 11 weeks of finals.

I spent the rest of the afternoon on TOY STORY. The movie, of course, is a marvel, still as funny and involving as it ever was. Yep, computer animation has progressed a ton since this was made, but the crux of Pixar's genius is right there on display as clear as ever. Bright, interesting characters one immediately identifies with, an engrossing story, and such witty writing that's it's just plain fun to see it unfold.

I fell in love with these characters all over again.

Of course, the movie was only 80 minutes, but there are a ton of bonus materials, much of it carried over from the last DVD release and some of it newly produced in 1080p for the Blu-ray release. Truth to tell, the new stuff wasn't all that great. All the interesting stuff about the genesis of the project and its three painful years of birth are told in the vintage features.

That is my problem with Mr. Hoffman in DEATH OF A SALESMAN.  I never saw his Broadway performance where it might well have worked, but under the glare of the cameras I thought his performance was very mannered and unnaturally "showy."

Still, some of his screen work, such as MIDNIGHT COWBOY is so painfully real that it hurts.

a) I watch some of the new movies that have been called crappy because sometimes I do not agree with reviewers or the public.

b) Sometimes older movies age well and have redeeming qualities years later - that has happened quite a bit.  And sometimes I just don't remember enough and I want to see why I thought it was so bad.  With Daddy's Gone A Hunting it was simple - I wanted to hear the John Williams score again

I loved DADDY'S GONE A HUNTING!  I have seen the film several times.  Sometimes crap is just what the doctor ordered.

One sister.  Daine.  Three years (and two months) older.  Married to husband Jim in 1966.  Divorced in the mid Seventies.  One child, a daughter, Danielle, now 40.  She has never married, but has two children, my great nephews, Elijah and Xavier.
She married husband Jim in the mid-eighties.  Still married.  They had the same daughter that they had the first time around; still 40.

My sister and I did not get along at all when we were growing up.  She used to lock me out of the house in my pajamas when my mother was at church.  We became much closer when we both became adults; and I got bigger than her.

:P  We went there because we'd heard about the good fish they have on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent.  The choices were baked or fried, so I, trying to be virtuous, chose baked.  What they neglected to say was that the baked fish was smothered in onions, which I really, really don't like.  Even though I scraped them off, I still could not eat the fish.  If this has been a fancy restaurant, I'd have sent it back, but it's really just a fast food jernt and I didn't want to cause a scene.  Richard had ordered the fried fish, so we shared that and then went for ice cream.

Slanket vs. Snuggie (http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6297693n)

Mo Rocca interviews the inventor of the Slanket. He came up with the idea in 1998, long before the Snuggie. It was successful but it didn't take off the way the Snuggie did. I guess because he doesn't have cheesy commercials.

I've done a little research & have read to get the Slanket for comfort & softness.

Yep, I have one. It can be very comfy, and I have gotten a lot of wear out of mine.

I found something like it at Macy's & was excited because it has a quilted outer layer, much better to deal with dog fur.  I looked up a photo & it fits like a robe & looks like a robe.

The Slanket gives a portion of the profits to a non profit organization.  The color you purchase determines where the money is donated.

As I was writing up my TOY STORY review, I realized I hadn't watched one of the bonus features, so when I went back down, that's the first thing I did. Was only a two minute featurette, but I did feel I needed to see it.

After that, I watched last night's NCIS: LA. Only an average episode. This was about gangs in LA shooting people down on the streets. The acting wasn't great and the story weas very familiar. This show doesn't usually pose mysteries for the viewers to solve which is one reason I MUCH prefer the original show to this spin-off.

I ended my evening with tonight's HUMAN TARGET. Looks like DR Jennifer is getting her wish to have a female regular on the show. Looks like that nerdy girl is going to be back as a computer expert to work with the Jackie Earle Hayley character.

I did like the episode though the back and forth in time scenario is used by everyone nowadays and has certainly lost its freshness.

Hello, everyone.

I have neither a Snuggie nor a Slanket. I also have no Siblings. But both DR MBarnum and DR JRand seem to have lots of siblings and, I presume, lots of stories to go with them. If either of you decide to become a novelist I think you will have lots of material.

Here's the clip of Hoffmand and Midler from 1977

I had totally forgotten the bit with her dressing him at the piano. Seeing the two clips makes me wish this special were on DVD.
TOD: Question for BK: Is there any market for such DVDs in the way that there is a niche for soundtracks, cast albums, etc.? Would it work for Kritzerland to market 1,000 copies of, say, "On the Flip Side" or a Bette Midler special or anything else that might be in the vaults?

Really hard to know - DVD is not doing well.  However, I do have a master on On The Flip Side and could do it easily.  I've been thinking about it.

I wonder if Dustin remembers my uncle Charlie Keith and calling him for some reason in NYC many years ago.  I answered the phone and didn't have a clue who "Dusty" was until Charlie told me.

I doubt it; not because his memory is going but because he meets so many people!

Being both Irish and Jewish means, as a family "slogan" goes, we have the Irish temper and the Jewish intellect to back it up.  :)

Dustin christened me as an "honorary Jew", based on my knowledge of Minsk, schmaltz and other things Jewish. He arrived wearing a green lei. He loves off-color jokes, so I immediately said "Looks like "somebody" got lei-ed".  That made him laugh and we had a great recording session. He went way beyond what we expected, time-wise and energy-wise. Once again Peter and I both felt that he was not only the most gracious, kind and thoughtful person we had ever met in the biz, but in our lives.

Afterwards, we spent the afternoon wandering around Venice and then took a drive into Hollywood to have the most wonderful hamburgers at Umami, followed by drinks at the Formosa, a place that struck me as something bk would probably like. Very old-school Hollywood!

I love him. I've worked for him a couple of times and I think he's one of the best.

Oh, darn...I wish I had known! I told him how much I had loved Harry Nilsson and the narration Dustin did for The Point, and he sang me a song from a show he was in with Cleavon Little which he thought Harry had written. He told me he couldn't sing, but he can certainly stay on pitch.

A friend of Peter's told him that Dustin had helped her get her start as an actress by helping her get a part in DEATH OF A SALESMAN. She's now a teacher at Peter's daughter's school. She had a lot of stories about how generous he was and always tried to help people coming up. He also told us a few stories about rooming with Robert Duvall---they sound like quite a pair!

It indeed was a gorgeous day here in NYC. Alas, I never made it to Central Park due to my quasi-last minute recording session.  However, after I finished the session, I walked down to Madison Square Park and Union Square Park and even took a little stroll through part of the West Village. Of course, since it was St. Patrick's Day, the sidewalks were filled with post-Parade "celebrants". And from what I could see - and smell - it looked like some of them had started "celebrating" quite early today. :-\

But that's New York City on St. Patrick's Day! -For better or worse.

I've just had three alarming e-mails about skipping problems on the man who would be king.  I just played two different copies in two different players and they played fine, so I'm hoping this is a small, random problem.  If it's more widespread than that, then the pressing plant will have to repress discs only, as many as are needed, and they're also going to have to cover any postage that's required because this is not a fault of the master we sent them, since the two copies I played play fine.

As for siblings...

I'm the oldest of four boys, and we all basically were born one right after the other - good Catholic family. ;)

My brother, Don, was born a month premature. If he was born "on time", we might have had the same birthday (not birth date).  Consequently, for a month every year, we are the same age. He currently lives in Fairfax, VA, and is the father of my niece, Alexandra.

Michael is brother #3. He currently lives in Fairfax, VA, too, but since he's also been stationed with the Coast Guard in Wilmington, NC, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.  He's the father of my nephew, John Michael, and my nieces Alyssa and Emily (my god-daughter).

Jay is my youngest brother, and he currently lives in San Diego, CA.  No nieces or nephews via him. Yet. ;)

In general, we all got along while we were growing up, and have gotten closer as we've gotten older.

And that's the Cliffs Notes version.

And earlier this evening I headed back to Carnegie Hall for a recital by Dawn Upshaw and Emanuel Ax.  They performed songs by Chopin and Schumann (part of the anniversary year celebrations for both composers), as well as the U.S. Premiere of a set of songs by Stephen Prutsman based on texts by Billy Collins, "Piano Lessons".  Emanuel Ax also performed a set of Chopin Mazurkas and Nocturnes. It was a wonderful recital.
