So Larry, whatever happened with 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE?

It will never have a good book; Indiana University did a production of the piece in a revised book by Erik Haagenson, but it wasn't a success. Alan Lerner's original book is a mess and it needs someone with a sassy sense of humor and politics, like Gary Trudeau, to redo it.  The lyrics are better.  The piece has been recorded as "White House Cantata."  It's a fantastic score

I have that recording.  I also have Ben Bagley's recording of Bernstein stuff and it has several songs from 1600 PENNSYLVANIA AVENUE, some not on the "White House Cantata" recording.

Good evening folks!  Wow!  I stayed up LATE last night, didn’t I?

I have something I want to share with you all but I don’t want to do anything wrong so I will ask BK before I post them.

Someone I know e-mailed me the most amazing 3-D drawings!

This is what the e-mail said:They are wonderful!

BK, is it ok if I post a couple of them?

Danise, I think I got that same e-mail!  Those pictures are incredible!  We've all posted pictures here before, so I don't see why it should be a problem.  But we certainly can post links to websites:  click HERE and you'll go to a site with a few photos of his drawings...and one of photos was taken from the wrong side!  (If you've never seen them, you'll understand when you see it.) ;D

And HERE is his website and HERE is another site with more pictures.  The man has talent!

And speaking of Harold Arlen (eventually)...yesterday, Ron wrote:
Quote
DR Jason: Take heart. The theme from "The Golden Girls" also has the line:

"And if you threw a party...invited everyone you knew...you would see the biggest gift would be from me...and the card attached would say, 'Thank you for bein' a friend.'"

Then Tomovoz responded (over several posts):
Quote
Kind of sad, how the song is so associated with that show, but never with the guy who wrote it, Andrew Gold.

And he didn't write it for the show, either.

Mr Gold's song is quite popular here - for funerals. His song "Lonely Boy" charted here but nothing else.

For the trivia minded (who isn't) - Andrew Gold is the son of "Exodus" composer Ernest Gold and Marni Nixon!

I have a "DiscoVision" laserdisc of a concert that Bernadette Peters did in 1980 on Canadian TV.  The opening song is "Thank You for Being a Friend" ("The Golden Girls" TV show didn't start until 1985).  Anyway, a couple of years ago, I got from eBay a DVD of this concert but it included a CD of the whole concert, also!  Pretty cool...except that for both the DVD and CD, the song "Thank You for Being a Friend" is not included!  The (real) second song of the concert is called "Wake Up and Live," and it's a cute song, but definitely NOT an opening number, and it just feels like something is missing.  But recently, I've seen this same concert on DVD by some company in Brazil and it has "TYFBAF" listed as one of the songs, so I may just get that so that I can have the whole thing on DVD.  And I had no idea that the composer was Marni Nixon's kid!

As for the Harold Arlen reference, she does a big Harold Arlen medley and says that "he's one of [her] most favorite composers."  This was, of course, several years before Sunday In the Park With George. ;)

Well, I have to go now.  Yesterday was my dad's 67th birthday but we didn't do anything for him then.  He and my mom and my niece were at the beach.  So, today (now, actually), we're all going to have dinner at a local casino because for the month after a "senior's" birthday, they get a free meal either anytime they come in or maybe once a week or something like that!  Anyway, we're all going just so that he can have his free dinner. ;) He'll open gifts before we go, though.  So, have a good evening, all!

Which may explain why I've never really coped with the line in "Showboat" about being "A quick study".
I still have difficulty with "don't know from" which makes no sense at all. How am I going to cope in the NW next year? I may need to catch a "fairy" from Vancouver to Victoria and then to the US of A.

Good Evening!

I'm back in New York City!

A very special thanks to Tom and Antonia (a.k.a. DRs Rodzinski and Antonia) for sharing the driving duties back from Williamstown.  We did this, we did that.  We ate here, we ate there.  We saw this, we saw that.  -You get the picture.  -And, yes, pictures were taken along the way!

But for now, I need to get unpacked and settled back into my place.  I'll be back...

Laters...

Agree- but at least that bit of body manipulation is not (usually) thrust in my face in a public place. The more appalling trend is the movement toward body mutilation - lip piercing, tongue piercing (better than splitting!), etc. I was amazed to see a waitress strutting across a chain restaurant (TGIF, I think) with her omphalic piercing proudly on display. (At least it distracted attention from the lint.)

der Brucer
I don't think waitrons should ever have lint.

"I Was a TV Series"

Wasn't that the book that CABARET is based on?
No, you're thinking of Cabaret II: Frau Schneider's Revenge.

Had a brunch at nearby Hugo's - I'd been there last week and had great Eggs Benedict.  Unfortunately, today's Eggs Benedict was almost inedible.  I don't know what the problem was, but I only managed to eat one of the eggs - the potatoes were very good, however.

We spent the rest of the afternoon with Dear Niece Laura driving us around in her new Saturn Vue - we saw the houses where my great grandparents lived, where my mom lived as a teenager, where our great-uncle lived (and his barbershop), and where my parents lived when my sister was born.  We also went to Crown Hill and brushed grass clippings off the headstones of my mother's parents and her grandfather and step-grandmother.

Our kind of day.  :)

I don't understand the reason behind some of the piercings.  I saw one with a gold ball high in her cheek.  I thought it was a pimple.  Silly me.
