Topic of the Day:

In my DVD player:  "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" from Netflix and the opera, "Doctor Atomic" from my local library.

In my CD player:  a whole bunch of things at work that I can't think of.

On my DVR:  last Tuesday's episode of "Reaper" and the series premiere of the new version of "Cupid."

One of our neighbors has a cat that got out and has been missing since Sunday.  On our morning stroll at 5:00 AM, I think Zach discovered him, hiding under an SUV in a nearby driveway.  But by the time I tethered Zach to a tree and went to try to retrieve the cat, he was gone.  :(   I left a note on the neighbor's door.

LOL.

Well.....it seems that at one point in the title song, Ms Channing was raised over the heads of the Waiters, and Ms Channing being at a particular age - well, would lose some water from her radiator, so to speak - each time she was lifted.

Of course she could not wear a bulky undergarment and told the boys they would just have to deal with it.  The boys were not happy.  They petitioned Equity and were granted Hazard Pay for participating in that particular number.

I may not be back on here after this morning for a 24-hour period. This afternoon, I'm heading up to Winston-Salem to see best friend John's mother in a production of Agatha Christie's SPIDER'S WEB. I have seen his mother act before (she's really great) but I've never seen this particular Christie play which is the major reason I wanted to go.

We'll go up and see the play tonight, and I'll be spending the night with my friend Gregg who lives there. We're coming back late Saturday morning, so it'll likely be Saturday noon or so before I can get back on-line here.

Just wanted to explain my E&T behavior for anyone who will notice my absence.

Last night I was scrolling through the HD channels on my cable box and was thrilled and absolutely shocked to notice that both FX-HD and AMC-HD have been added to my cable system's line-up (without fanfare, I might add).

With these additions, all of the available HD channels that I needed to be able to see my favorite shows in high definition have now been added by my cable company. I couldn't be happier or more relieved. Now, I can stop my monthly barrage of e-mails to Time Warner about adding these channels to their line-up.

If GIGI on Blu-ray comes today (as it should, but who knows with the USPS), I'll be madly attempting to get it all done this afternoon and the review posted before we head out of town around 6.

If it doesn't arrive, I'll continue working on HAWAII FIVE-O today. There are 24 episodes in the set, and I've only watched 6 of them thus far.

Will do! Ever since I read about it years ago, I've always wondered why it didn't get much play around here when THE MOUSETRAP and TEN LITTLE INDIANS seem to get done every other year. From the little bit I've read, I think it's more suspense than one of her standard whodunits, but I could be wrong about that.

Good morning, all! I awoke with headache and stayed in bed for a while waiting for it to go away. After my bath, I spoke to Mr Raines about the GUIDING LIGHT situation and his plans. He's off to Houston for a concert and we both had an email last night from the conductor praising the orchestra's rehearsal and my orchestrations for Ron. Then I had my oatmeal and checked my bank balance. I need to call the pharmacy for meds and walk down to pick them up. While I'm down there I will stop at the NYPL and check out the women designers exhibit, then an afternoon working on Mr Loesser's second act of The Most Happy Fella.

Tonight, I have a performance of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA to attend at Manhattan School of Music. Tomorrow, I have my first meeting with Mr McGlinn's executor and I guess we'll plan the approach to emptying the apartment.

TOD:
DVD: Jerome Robbins, a lot of Charle Dickens adaptations
CD: Handel's glorious ACIS AND GALATEA, Mendelssohn's version of Handel's ACIS & GALATEA, Mozart's version of Handel's ACIS AND GALATEA, KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway
   VCR: Shocking!

In the DVD:  I am continuing to watch AN AGE OF KINGS, the BBC's chronological series of Shakespeare's history plays.  It is excellent.  Sean Connery makes a very good Hotspur.   My exercise DVD is currently GLADITOR OF ROME with Gordon Scott from a boxed set of fifty Italian Sword & Sandal movies entitled collectively The Warriors.

CD:  Listening to Bernard Herrmann scores.

CD:  the divoon Rosemary Clooney singing' and swingin' with her paramour Nelson Riddle.  I know I'm slow on the uptake sometimes, but I never realized that the television theme for Peyton Place was the film theme for Return to Peyton Place, which Rosie sings on this CD.

DVD:  the hilarious, four-star-plus LOST IN AUSTEN (hmmm---are they BK fans?), an extremely clever send up of Pride and Prejudice.  It's almost 3 hours (we're about 2 hours into it), but it is one of the swiftest moving and most enjoyable things I've seen recently.  If you're an Austen fan, or especially if you love the 1995 BBC version of P&P, you MUST, MUST, MUST get this.

TOD:

As the Alphabetical Musicals Project has been interrupted by Kritzerland, this morning I listened to Mila Ilieva Taking a Chance on Love on the way into work.  I must say, I never expected to hear a cabaret performance of "When Does the Ravishing Begin", which is one of my favorite rape songs.

Back in the days when I lived in Pasadena, there was a thing called FM radio, which was distinctly different from AM radio.  Mainly bacause the FCC was very persnickity about the licenses it granted and there were no rock stations on FM.  Classical, jazz, news, talk radio (which was not, of course, the mud-wrestling event it has become today).

One station had a daily cast album show, and as the host was British, I managed to record a number of English musicals on my trusty old Wollensack, shows which most Americans had never heard of:  Belle, Virtue in Danger, Fing Ain't What They Used to Be, Lock Up Your Daughters.  The latter, based upon Henry Fielding's story "Rape Upon Rape", has a delightful naughty score by Lionel Bart, including the above-mentioned ravishing number.

By now, most of them have been issued on CD--including Blitz!, which I hadn't heard until the CD was issued.  I think I am missing Virtue in Danger.

(http://www.jenklairkids.com/Eshop/products/lock-up-your-daughters.jpg)  (http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51AEW691B7L._SL500_AA240_.jpg) (http://www.castalbumdb.com/jpg/J74.jpg)

Anyway, kudos to Mila for singing it, and kudos to BK for recording it.  This evening, on my way home, Evening Primrose is up.  How delicious.  btb, after all these years of that broadcast being the Golden Fleece of collectors, it is surprising how many numbers from the original telecast are up on youtube.  I guess it is only a matter of time before various large video corporations launch their Copyright S*W*A*T* teams in a massive sweep of the site.

Even more distinguished than that, the TV theme for "Peyton Place" and the song, "Seasons of Love" in "Return to Peyton Place", are all based upon the main theme to Franz Waxman's magnificent score for "Petyon Place".

Down with love the flowers and rice and shoes
Down with love the root of all midnight blues
Down with things that give you that well-known pain
Take that moon wrap it in cellophane

Down with love let's liquidate all its friends
Moon and June and roses and rainbow's ends
Down with songs that moan about night and day
Down with love yes take it away, away

Away
Far away
Give it back to the birds and bees and the Viennese

Down with eyes romantic and stupid
Down with sighs and down with cupid
Brother let's stuff that dove
Down with love

Don't let the band get away
But matrimony
I'm not ready yet
Married I can always get

It's not for me
With all its smug conuvial joy
That ever constant smashing a toys
Wrecks your poise
While hubby is out with the boys

No wedding gown
For this silhouette
Married I can always get

I'll live the life that I'm used to
I'll get a ring when I choose to
Because by now I have found
That the nicest rings are on a merry-go-'round

I'll be blasse
With any man who's motives are base
I'll keep each wiley wolf in his place
'Til the chase finally ends in embrace

But as for wedlock unlock me, my pet
Married I can always get

I'll go the way that the wind blows
Along the path that is primrose
I have my plan all rehearsed
I will kiss anybody will kiss me first

I'll take a cruise
Into a more adventurous clime
And if the captain's still in his prime
He will find
You don't have to sail all the time

I wanna stick to romantic roulette
Married I can always get

I got a call from the neighbor.  Their orange kitty has returned.  Don't know if the cat that Zach "found" for me this morning was theirs or not, but the story has a happy ending, at least.     :)

Happy Days for lost orange kitty and for Zach!

Michael Stewart loved Carol Channing in "Dolly" (as does Jerry Herman), and they always knew they'd make money if she did another tour, so they were (and are) loath to say anything against her, but you could tell they had to put up with a lot.

in re Hello Dolly:  Oh, I forgot to mention that BK's recording is indeed wonderful, one of the bestest OCR's, one that gets a lot of play around here.  That and the Murphy/Phillips The King and I are my favorite OCRs, I think, as far as the quality of the production itself.

Speaking of Miss Channing, a friend recently returned from a cruise that featured Carol Channing, Cloris Leachman and ... Marty Allen(!) teeling stories, showing movies, etc.  Had it been on television, it would have been a two-part "VERY SPECIAL" Love Boat with perhaps a terminally ill Moosie Drier showing a bitter Art Carney how to live life to the fullest.

As it was, it was merely a star-studded extravaganza on the 7 seas.

Carol Channing showed "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and told anecdotes.  She is now saying that she did all of her own stunts in the movie and that she really was shot out of a cannon.

: : In the original Frank Loesser score, the expression is "sheep's eye and the LICKERISH tooth." Loesser eplained how he arrived at it in a letter that's printed in his daughter's fine biography of him, A MOST REMARKABLE FELLA (page 109). The short of it is that he wanted a companion word that meant "covetous", fearing "sheep's eye" did not completely convey the exact thoughts of the guy who would be gazing at her. He went to Roget's and found that "lecherous" was a sort of synonym for covetous, but didn't quite like the way it sounded, so he consulted the Oxford English Dictionary and found that two archaic spellings of "lecherous" were "licorice" and "lickerish." He chose the latter. Voila!

Many thanks, Scott - I've been trying to tease out the meaning for many years. My ear always heard that application, but I couldn't come up with the "lickerish" thing. Thanks again - I can sleep easier.

If any DRs are coming into NYC before May 2, I recommend enthusiastically that you get to the Lincoln Center NYPL and check out the women designers' exhibit; it is phenominal: a great display of costumes from the past 75 years, beautiful designs by Caroline Siedle (2 original 1903 costume plates from BABES IN TOYLAND!) to the present, including some great Zipprodt designs for PIPPIN, a lot of models for sets, and on video curtain calls and scenes from many plays and musicals including the 1973 CANDIDE, the Cherry Jones productions of DOUBT and THE HEIRESS, DREAM GIRLS, and others) and video interviews with Tharon Musser, Patricia Zipprodt, Florence Klotz, Julie Taymor, and many others. It is truly an amazing exhibit.

The costume plate that stopped me short was a set of costumes for a revue from either the early 1920s or before, but my first reaction was "penises?" and after consideration, I think they're supposed to be hot dogs. I THINK! Or dancing dildos.

So, while I ate lunch, I watched BETTER OFF TED. This week was the third episode, but it's the first one I've seen all the way through, and I found it a droll, rather witty comedy similar in tone to the early years of SCRUBS.

I've always thought Jay Harrington was just a doll, and Portia di Rossi is a stitch. Other roles are also well cast and amusingly played. If this runs (ratings have just been fair), I may add it to my viewing queue, especially since LIFE ON MARS is now gone and I have no desire to start with THE UNUSUALS which is replacing it.

Some good guest stars in some of these shows including a very young A. Martinez in the last one I watched. In another Murray Matheson was the chief bad guy in a really clever story about fleecing people out of their inheritances. Lawrence Pressman was also in that one.

The costume plate that stopped me short was a set of costumes for a revue from either the early 1920s or before, but my first reaction was "penises?" and after consideration, I think they're supposed to be hot dogs. I THINK! Or dancing dildos.

Might have been from the "Penises From Heaven" ;) movie, a dvd of it you have, I think!!

Illya may not arrive before four, in which case it's going to be really hard to get them packaged and to the postal office.  If that's what happens, I'll take them over in the morning - I've repeatedly asked that they deliver before three but I think it's only actually happened twice.

I think Mary comes out more sympathetic. Mary had a hard time remembering her lines, but Channing was a horror to her. Really two faced. It could be she is a manic depressive because she had such mood swings.

Thank you for explaining, Matt.  Of course you will be missed.

Hoo and Ray!!  And I love that it was a unanimous ruling. :)

Here's my understanding of where it stands.  It will go into effect as soon as the time for a rehearing request is done, which is 3 weeks.  The news has reported that there will not be a request for a rehearing.

The ruling is based on an Iowa statute and decided based on the Iowa constitution not the US constitution, so there is no appeal to the feds.  The anti's only option is an amendment to the Iowa constitution.  Because of the process involved the earliest the vote on that amendment could be (assuming that it gets that far) is 2012.  So, at least until then, gay marriage will be legal here.

I dropped clothes off at Goodwill, went to the sale at Shopko, went to the grocery store, went to Petco, stopped at the office (I was out of town all afternoon) went back to the store to try to find milk (they were sold out of skim) and get bird and squirrel food and then back home.   I think I am in for the rest of the weekend

Here's a little more from the DM Register
Quote
The Iowa Supreme Court this morning upheld a Polk County judge’s 2007 ruling that marriage should not be limited to one man and one woman.

The ruling, viewed nationally and at home as a victory for the gay rights movement and a setback for social conservatives, means Iowa’s 5,800 gay couples can legally marry in Iowa beginning April 24.

There are no residency rules for marriage in Iowa, so the rule would apply to any couple who wanted to travel to Iowa.

Thanks re: Jackie Caine. I must have missed your first answer,. Much apprecitated.

The first time you asked that question, Michael, I thought you asked if Jackie Chan sang the theme song.

It is VERY windy here. Again.

Here, too.  It was so windy on I-71 that I got off and took the back roads at the end of my drive from Columbus.

TOD:

In the cheapies DVD bin at work, I spotted Bye Bye Birdie for just $9.99.  It has now replaced the laserdisk.

The film has not held up well.

But it would be worth another visit for Terrible Casting, if just for the bit parts.

(I nominate Angela Lansbury for the Mayor's Wife... she could milk those legs like crazy!)

Part of my problem with the original film of BBB comes from how much the script deviated from the stage version.  Speeding turtles?  Not that the original story was all that great, but castrating the score the way it did (which I didn't discover until the Tommy Tune stage tour)...

The television film remake kept to the original story (for the most part), but the casting was horrendous.

I've heard that there are plans for a film remake, due in 2011.  I shudder to think what will happen.   :P

I reminded my boss that the Joan Rivers comedy show here in Rehoboth is tomorrow night.

Big oops.  He'd forgotten, and already scheduled himself to be working tomorrow night.

Right now, it looks like his second-in-command will be going... assuming Bob's wife agrees to go.

(No, der B isn't feeling too well right now, or we'd have figured out some way of getting our suits wearable.)

I love how this has all turned out to be so last minute.   ::)

Well, considering that they just announced a Broadway revival the other day with John Stamos as Albert.................

STAMOS as Albert?

I don't think so.  Albert is an essentially weak man who learns how to grow a spine.  That means the audience has to buy him as spineless through most of the show, but he still has to be charming.  Dick Van Dyke was that kind of actor.  Stamos as spineless?  Nuh-uh, not working for me.

I'm back from seeing Benjamin Britten's version of THE BEGGAR'S OPERA at Manhattan School of Music. It was a good student production, but I do think I directed it better in 1979. The role I had to play in 1979, when the actor I cast dropped out, was sung much better by the senior Jesse Cromer tonight. The orchestra was wonderful and most of the cast was very good. The scene between Macheath and the whores at the tavern, I swear, is foolproof: just let them talk and the laughs happen.

DOLLY TRULL:   Pray, Madam, were you ever in keeping?

SUKY TAWDRY:  I hope, Madam, I han't been so long upon the Town, but I have met with some good-fortune as well as my Neighbors.

DOLLY TRULL: Pardon me, Madam, I meant no harm by the Question; 'Twas only in the way of Conversation.

SUKY TAWDRY: Indeed, Madam, if I had not been a Fool, I might have liv'd very handsomely with my last Friend. But upon his missing five Guineas, he turn'd me off. Now I never suspected he had counted them.

MRS SLAMMEKIN: Who do you look upon, Madam, as your best sort of Keepers?

DOLLY TRULL: That, Madam, is thereafter as they be.

MRS SLAMMEKIN: I, Madam, was once kept by a Jew; and bating their Religion, to Women they are a good sort of People.

SUKY TAWDRY: Now for my Part, I own I like an old Fellow: For we always make them pay for what they can't do.

It's Friday night.  happy happy joy joy

I'm glad I'm old enough to stay home on Friday night and not worry about it.

Always feeling like I had to be out on Friday and Saturday night in my 20's and 30's, derailed what I should have been doing.  Like homework and a career.

Now 4 years from retirement, I'm happy to be home and safe.

Even though we don't have rehearsal tomorrow, I will still be working.  The Theatre Charleston will be holding their Unified Auditions (http://theatrecharleston.com/home/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=51), and since they knew I would be in town, they asked me if would like to play for the auditions. I said, "Yes."  -The director from Charleston Stage also has to attend, so that's part of the rehearsal is not being held tomorrow - in addition to the Cooper River Bridge Run messing up the traffic. In any case... I will be playing tomorrow afternoon.  I think there are only 75 people signed up, so it should be a short session.  And then I believe I will be using a part of my fee to pay for a nice dinner downtown. :)

DR JoseSPiano - when you show finally goes up, how many musicians will you be conducting in the pit?

DR DAW - Well... Let's see... Umm... I believe my upcoming production of The Producers will have the same number of musicians as DR Ben's ever-lovin' Ant's production of H2$.

...Where I decided to try Oriental Garden out for a sushi dinner.  Talk about an unassuming place.  The sushi was very good, surprisingly good (imho).  OH!  And they even have a drive-thru!  Just check out this PIC (http://twitpic.com/2s4iv).

Jose, I am surprised you even tried that place.

Well... Any time I asked any of the locals if there was good sushi in town, the first place that they all named was "Oriental Garden". I also checked the "Best Of" guide in the Charleston City Paper, as well some of the reviews on Yelp!  There may be some slicker, more modern places in town, but Oriental Garden seemed to be everyone's stand-by for sushi.  Even after just one meal there, I'd have to agree.

*I had tried to go there one night last week around 8:00, but the place was packed, and there was an hour wait for a table.  A busy sushi place means fresher fish.

I also came across Sugar Bakeshop (http://www.sugarbake.com) earlier this afternoon.  I chatted briefly with the owners, Bill and David, and it turns out they used to live in New York City.  It's a very homey place, tucked almost discreetly along a neighborhood street.  Cakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, mini-tarts - all made by Bill and David. I sampled a few of their treats, and will definitely be back to try some of their other offerings.

*They do make Banana Pudding, but it's made to order... In a party size.  I just might have to bring some to rehearsal one day.

*I found a copy of Saint-Beuve's poésies at Librairie de France in Rockefeller Center.  Alas, it was an "antique". And before I go to bed...

There are a couple of teachers in the cast, and tonight at the party, they started comparing some of the "interesting" names that some of their students have.  Well...

Apparently, this young girl's parents could not decide on a name for their newborn daughter.  Well, the hospital had to put something on the birth certificate, so...

The girls name is pronounced: Fuh-MAL-lay.

It is spelled: Femalé.

The hospital simply filled in the newborn's name as "Female", and the parents just decided to leave it that once the left the hospital.

True story.
