Title: TOAST OF THE TOWN
Post by: bk on May 25, 2005, 10:55:19 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've toasted the notes, you've jammed the notes, you've buttered the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home and if they don't come home soon, frankly they'll be toast.

I would love to see a musical made from the movie "Groundhog Day," written by Stephen Sondheim. ;D

I'd read some time ago (a couple of years ago?) that he bought the musical stage rights, so it might (and also might not) happen.

Actually, how about "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" by Lynne Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty?  I really like this movie and I LOVE A&H's songs.  Once On This Island is one of my absolute favorite musicals (I've seen three different productions of it) and Ragtime is one my absolute favorite muscal scores (I've never seen the show).  I think that they would do a fabulous job with it.  Just my humble opinion. :D

Well, I must be off.  I have a very busy day tomorrow and it starts tonight.  I have to make some spaghetti tonight for a retirement lunch that my Relay For Life team is hosting tomorrow.  I'm partially cooking it tonight so that all we have to do is heat it up in the late morning.  It works quite well. :)

In the morning, my niece (who doesn't drive yet) has a yoga class at her college that starts at 7:00 a.m.  Her mom (my sister) can't drive her so I have to get my butt out of bed to drive her.  I also have to wait until her class is over to drive her home.  Then I have to go to work and help set up and serve for the retirement lunch.  After work, I'm going to see a local (semi-professional) production of Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.  I got a certificate for two free tickets from a local radio station!  A friend from work (okay, he's a very attractive friend...but straight :'( ;)) will be going with me.  My sister can't go and my niece doesn't want to go, so my friend Rick said that he would go.

Anyway, that'll be my very long day. ;D

Good morning, all!  I was in bed by around 9:15 last night, but I was up at 11:45,  3:30 and 6:30 with physical ailments.  I feel rested but quesy, so I think I'll stay home today, perhaps listen to music, perhaps do some laundry, and perhaps work on THE GOLDEN APPLE.

I'm thnking about the TOD, but nothing's grabbing my attention.  Perhaps later.

I would like to see The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (The Circus of Dr. Lao) made into a musical with a score by Jerry Herman.  I thought Pat Morita would be goog for the role.

Here is the actual dialogue

Mike, let me tell you something. The whole world is a circus if you know how to look at it. The way the sun goes down when you're tired, comes up when you want to be on the move. That's real magic. The way a leaf grows. The song of the birds. The way the desert looks at night, with the moon embracing it. Oh, my boy, that's... that's circus enough for anyone. Every time you watch a rainbow and feel wonder in your heart. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand. Every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, you're part of the Circus of Dr. Lao.

And a reprise of the song at the end of act two (curtain going down)

Mike, the whole world is a circus if you look at it the right way. Every time you pick up a handful of dust, and see not the dust, but a mystery, a marvel, there in your hand, every time you stop and think, "I'm alive, and being alive is fantastic!" Every time such a thing happens, Mike, you are part of the Circus of Dr. Lao.

Two vehicles that I always thought might make fun musicals:  I Love Lucy and The Trouble With Angels.  The perfect creative team for Lucy would have been Comden and Green with a Cy Coleman score (though some of the standards from the show would have to be incorporated, such as "The Lady in Red", "Babalu" and, of course, the title song.)  Angels--Martin Charnin and Charles Strouse, I think.

Nice pictures from BK's trip.

Not sure yet about the TOD. I'll have to think further.

I saw Thrill Me last night. It's a musical chamber piece based on the Leopold and Loeb murder. The production is very well done (it's at York Theatre) but it's such a gruesome story (not that gruesome can't work in theatre) and I don't see any reason why Nathan Leopold is obsessed with Richard Loeb. He (Loeb) is such a hateful and mean cretin with (IMHO) no redeemable qualities that I can't connect with the idea that Leopold would do anything, including helping to murder a 12-year just to be with Loeb. Love does funny things (isn't that a song lyric) but those funny things don't add up to a plausible musical here. The show opens officially tonight so I will be interested in seeing what the critics say.

That's the news from here. I'll be back.

One thing I'm pretty sure I'm going to do - or rather not going to do - is not going to see Big River today at Noon at Ford's.  I shall see it next week.  I would like to see it with a bunch of the Mamma Mia! crew, but there is actually a bunch of stuff I need to take care of today - and tomorrow - since Monday is Memorial Day, a holiday, and places like the bank and the post office will be closed.  So...

At least that's one thing I've "done" today so far!
Title: Re:TOAST OF THE TOWN

Well TOD:

If they can make a musical of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and TITANIC, I say why not a musical of ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN....why not?  And since we have a title heroine, I say let music and lyrics be by Mr Tim Rice and Mr Elton John.  ;D

Other than that - to be completely off the wall and why has no one thought of it (although I am sure someone has) - I think the life of Vera Ralston would make a good musical - add some ice skating, a last minute escape from the Nazis, marriage to the owner of a movie studio, Roy Rogers, and that blue sequin outfit from JUBILEE TRAIL.  And of course it would have to be composed by Jerry Herman....and be called simply HRUBA!  ;D

As to the title of today's notes.

Mr Steve Allen said something on his syndicated television talk show that has amused me for decades (as has MANY things Mr Allen said).  He was introducing a singer, I think it was Miss Petula Clark......reading from his teleprompter he said:

"And now, ladies and gentlemen, here she is.....the toast of two continents [aside] and the jelly bread of three...Miss Petula Clark!"

As for the Topic of the Day...

I would still like to see an adaptation of Jack Finney's story, "Marion's Wall".  It was made into the movie, "Maxie", which starred Glenn Close and Mandy Patinkin, but there were a bunch of things changed from the original story.

"Marion's Wall" appears in a collection entitled, "Three By Finney", and one of the other stories in there, "The Woodrow Wilson Dime" which deals with time travel and how certain actions can change the "outcomes" in the future.  A very neat story.

As for composers...  I think Stephen Sondheim could handle both, but...  With the flapper-girl aspect of "Marion's Wall", I'm thinking Kander & Ebb.  For "Woodrow Wilson's Dime".... Hmmm...  Bock & Harnick.. or, then again, it would be neat to see what Mr. Sondheim would do with the material.

I'd also like to see a totally satisfactory adaptation of St. Exupery's "The Little Prince".  I know there are a bunch out there already - I worked on the Cummins & Scoullar version ("44 Sunsets" appears on the BK-produced "Broadway Bound"), and I believe Art Perlman and Jeffrey Lunden also have a highly praised version out there.   -And I have yet to see nor hear the new operatic treatment by Rachel Portman....   In any case...

If I could attach a "big name" composer to it... Other than than Lerner - was it Lerner who scored the movie version? - it would have been interesting to see how  Leonard Bernstein would have treated the material.

I'd love to see a REAL musical version of I REMEMBER MAMA with the Rodgers and Hammerstein of the late 1940s.

During the years I taught seventh grade, I always enjoyed teaching this book to my students. It's got lots of gentle humor, some light drama, and lots of wonderful life lessons to offer, and I think R&H in their prime could have done the book justice.

Rodgers was just too old and ill when he tried to tackle it late in his life, and casting a non-singer for Mama couldn't have been a worse decision. Irene Dunne, of course, who played Mama in the film version would have been an ideal Mama for the stage.

Here is your Page Two Horse Dance

Actually, DR vixmom, Nassau county bought a whole heap of these horses in white a year or two ago with the idea of painting them and selling them (!).  They gave this one to New College's art students to paint, but then they didn't like the anti-war sixties sentiments and refused to take it back.  So it was mounted outside the building.

The rest, I read, are lanquishing in some warehouse.  Not as good an investment as the disappearing rare coins in Ohio, I guess.

I have always thought that DAS BOOT would make a great musical.  Unfortunately, the big production numbers might be risky.  And, well, the love songs might be rough……

But seriously, I think that BAREFOOT IN THE PARK and RANDOM HARVEST both have possibilities as musicals.  BAREFOOT would most likely have a Jerry Herman score; while RANDOM HARVEST might be best with a Cole Porter score.

Yes, there was and it was horrifyingly bad!  My friend Martin Connor directed it, and I saw it.  I cannot recall the name of the show now, but Graham Bickley played the husband, and I remember telling Martin that the scene designer needed to change the date on the wall under the wallpaper from 23/06/25 (whatever it actually was) to 06/23/05 since the musical was set in San Francisco.  I have the program here somewhere.

(Marlene Dietrich character, in disguise as a submarine commander, lounging atop a piano)

Vat's on the guard
Out in the ocean?
Und makes the motion
That leaves me thrilled?

Vat's long and hard
And full of sea men?
And has me dreamin'
Of being...fulfilled?

Vat goes down villingly viff no complaint?
Vat looks good in a gray coat of latex...paint?

It is Das Boot.
It is Das Boot.
Take it from me,
You vill agree

Give the salute,

Raise up your beer.
Sing out a cheer.
Don't be a mute.

Good Afternoon!

It's amazing what one can accomplish when not sitting with one's laptop on one's lap and surfing the net.

;)

I sorted through all my mail and bills.  Lots of stuff for the shredder.  However, tomorrow when I pick up my mail in Richmond from the past week and a half... Hmm... At least I'm caught up here.

:)

*And I while opening, sorting and shredding, I was watching the "Ellen Degeneres Show".  Her first guest was a young man who had written and drawn a project for his Language Arts class entitled, "Ellen Island".  His teacher sent his essay and drawings in, and Ellen brought them on the show.  Boy, did that young man clean up - art supplies, a TiVo unit - with a lifetime subscription, and a trip to Hawaii!

Hmm...  I wonder what I could send into Ellen.... Hmmm...

In any case...

The young man's totally heartfelt "shock" and reaction to not only just being on the show as well as the "prizes" was refreshing to see.

No, No, No...

The Big 11:00 number for Helen is simply called...

"Water"...

And in true musical theatre and theatrical fashion, it's the only time we actually hear Helen speak, the inner Helen.  Saying all the things she's been wanting to say...  Singing them.  All the "handicaps" disappear for a few minutes.  And then we, the audience, realize, that we also have a handicap -  the "handicap of speech".

Hmmm...

Of course, the final song of the show would be a duet between her and Annie Sullivan.  A wordless duet - just Annie and Helen signing.  With a shadow-play of the climactic "water scene" playing on the white scrim upstage.

Hmmm....

Actually, that could be quite moving if done right.

Actually, Jose, when you see Big River, you will see a wonderful moment similar to what you're describing. Don't read any more if you don't want a description. The others can scroll down.

As you know, This production of Big River is done in collaboration with Deaf Theatre West. The entire production is spoken and signed at the same time but near the end of the show one of the numbers is a choral hymn-type song done as a roof-raising choir performance. The chorus of the song is repeated many times and then the singing stops and the orchestra is quiet. The only thing you see is a stage full of signing actors saying what was just a moment ago, spoken word. It was such a beautiful moment that it made me cry. It was an amazing moment of theatre.

Actually, Jose, when you see Big River, you will see a wonderful moment similar to what you're describing. Don't read any more if you don't want a description. The others can scroll down.

A beautiful moment indeed.  And I have a feeling I'll be crying as much as I did the first time I saw it.

What we need is a musical ripped from todays headlines.

Paris Hilton!!!

Songs could include "Take a Bite of That Burger", "Of Course I Can Act!," and "Don't Hate Me 'Cause I'm Beautiful (Find Something New)."

Anyone else see the new commercial that Chase is running - I think it's Chase - for their Visa card.  With the father and the daughter.. and the wedding... That final image....

A good musical could be made of the book Green Mansions by W.H. Hudson. A bad movie was made of it with Tony Perkins and Audrey Hepburn.

I would choose Loesser, but he already did a "Green" show, so I will tap Lerner and Loewe.

Drip System: You run an underground hose around, and install a short skinny hose to each plant from the underground hose, which emits water slowly. This way the water can soak into the hard desert ground, instead of running off.

It's not too hot today (97F so far at noon), but the sun is quite intense. So we'll begin working again tomorrow at 4:30 a.m.

Well, of course, that's the point of a cliffhanger: to get you to tune in next season to find out.

And from all indications, ALIAS is going to begin the season with other fall shows rather than being held until January as they did this year.

I have not watched LOST yet, so I have skipped all messages about it and can't comment further. I will see it tomorrow night unless other plans develop. Otherwise, certainly by the end of the weekend. (I think ABC is rerunning both it and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES this Saturday night.)

I did watch the two episodes of QUEER AS FOLK which were broadcast last Sunday.

Also watched last night's season finale of LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT. It was just a standard episode with no cliffhangers or conundrums. In fact, I suspect it was an episode filmed earlier in the season and postponed since in the last few shows, Jamey Sheridan had been wearing an eyepatch due to some effects of palsey he was fighting off, and last night the patch was nowhere to be seen.

Yes, I've watched AND talked about that. Don't you remember that earlier in the week, I commented on your RIP message saying I didn't mind knowing ahead of time since I had guessed anyway. I watched the episode the day I wrote that.

All I have left now to watch is DEADWOOD, LOST, and the Glenda Jackson movie THE MAIDS.

Well, what can I say? It's on their fall schedule for Thursdays at 8 p.m. If they've changed their minds about that scheduling, I've yet to read about it.

The shows that are being held for midseason - JAKE IN PROGRESS, LESS THAN PERFECT to name two on ABC - are not on the schedule.

I can provide you with summaries if you'd like. For me, it's just a guilty pleasure. I understand the writing is weak and not all the actors are very good, but there are so few shows on ANY network that have gay characters that I for one hunger to see some of the problems *I* as a gay man face reflected in a drama series.

I'll check in once I'm back in Richmond later tonight...

Too much information for tomorrow's topic.
Being locked indoors means movie viewing so I've caught up on the following:

"In America"  Truly wonderful.
"All About My Mother" . A movie gem.
"The Company" - I'm still thinking about it. My expectations were different but there was much to like.

I could watch TV but who really wants to see most  shows that air these days. (I'm waiting for the new (to us) season of "Carnivale" and of course the final season of "Six Feet Under".

Evening all!

So glad to hear from both of our guys.  Continued healing vibes your way!

I had another encounter with a black snake.  Maybe the same one.  I thought it was a piece of hose laying on the ground and went over to look.  When the “hose” started moving, I think I just about jumped out of my skin!

No blood, no foul.  He went his way and I went mine.

DRHisaka, those are some very beautiful roses!  Mine has not bloomed yet this year but when it does, I will take a photo it to show.

DR Michael, there was a time I also could recite from memory lines from “The Seven Faces of DR. Lao.”  I even did “The Fall of the City” as an English project, I believe.  I LOVE that movie.  Humm, which reminds me that I should check and see if it is on DVD.  That is a “MUST HAVE” for my collection.

Things are really starting to shape up for the October trip.  I think I have ironed out a lot of the details.  I may even be able to take a small side trip to TarryTown.  Why TarryTown you ask?  I have always wanted to go see LynnHurst AKA_______________.  JRand may know the answer to that.

TOD.  Welllll, I think at this point and time the composer I would pick would be Misha Segal.

Good evening!

Continued recovery vibes for both DR's elmore and Tomovoz!

TOD - Thomas Mallon's novel Bandbox, set in New York in the 1920's.  From the book jacket:  "Bandbox is a hugely successful magazine...edited by bombastic Jehoshaphat "Joe" Harris...has a masthead that includes a grisly alliterative crime writer, a shy but murderously determined copyboy, and a burned-out vaudeville correspondent who's lovesick for his loyal dewy assistant...While Harris and his magazine careen from comic crisis to make-or-break calamity, the novel races from skyscraper to speakeasy, hops a luxury train to Hollywood, and crashes a buttoned-down dinner with Calvin Coolidge."  I think Frank Loesser, for a "Guys & Dolls, How to Succeed..." type of treatment.

Or Kay Thompson's Eloise books, by Strouse & Charnin or Flaherty & Ahrens.

3 p.m. and 103F.

Sliced turkey on bagel sandwich, popcicle, water

Sage green t-shirt, denim shorts, SPF50 sunscreen.

No one else wears a turkey bagel sandwich quite like my mom. Though she looks kinda silly trying to eat her sage green t-shirt and gulping down that sunscreen.  :P

I'm glad we're doing a clothing check today because I am wearing my favorite outfit. My red and blue Quidditch shirt, my plaid pajama bottoms that don't fit, and my black and purple striped fencing knee socks. Nothing matches. I look fantastic. And my leopard-spotted flamingo watch adds a nice touch.

I was eating some mac and cheese, but I seem to have lost track of it.

Bruce I loved the photos of NY.

Unlike Tomovoz I am not playing catch up, can barely do today’s.  However, while scrolling for the NY photos I did receive my messages from Tomovoz & Danise.  Thank you.

Hisaka your roses are beautiful and make me feel better.

I haven’t had the heart lately to talk.  Tuesday we said goodbye to our sweet Bogie.  Too many losses in too short of a time and the last two were just such very special pets.

I just lost a post filled with such warmth and dreadful puns. You are lucky.

The important content was about the help that HHW must have given my surgeon last week. I slept through the show despite the price of the ticket. Last time I went to a theatre where Women in White were performing, I walked out. My surgeon is way better than Sir ALW at keeping me in my place and comfortable.

Measure for Measure is probably my favorite Shakespeare play, probably because it is so off-the-wall. Great dialogue battles. And the character of Lucio is one of Shake's funniest.

If the high today was 94 degrees how can it still be 93 degrees at 7:00?  Keith is out mowing the lawn after planting all day.  I don’t know how he does it.  With luck the noise of the riding mower will chase the turkeys away.  As fascinating as the turkeys are they have ceased to be fun thanks to the BIG mess they make.

Watched Alias finale.  The body of the show was all right, although, with the fate of the world hanging by minutes, did we really need Sydney and Vaughn to stop and have a "moment".  It's times like that that you want to hurl something through the TV screen.  The final moment (not the line from Vaughn, but what followed), was fun.

Except that she does have some (albeit limited) Broadway (http://www.ibdb.com/person.asp?id=6752) credit.

She's got some movie credits, too, but that doesn't make her qualified to ask intelligent questions about movies or the theater.

BK, I tried to watch HOUSE OF BAMBOO when it was on TV not long ago...I absolutely love Shirley Yamaguchi and had looked forward to seeing this movie for many years...unfortunately after about 10 minutes I had to turn it off...it was just to strange. I will be very curious to know what you think of it (and maybe I will find I should have stuck with it).

And HELLER IN PINK TIGHTS co-stars the late Cal Bolder! Keep a look out for him!

I'm not surprised Matt as it does require a lot from the viewer. I hope there was a resolution of the story lines at the end of the second series. Too good for TV.

Since I have a 4 day weekend I will get a head start by popping into my dvd player my first Bollywood movie of the weekend....in honor of actor Sunil Dutt who passed away yesterday at age 75 I will watch his 1966 costume love story/action film AMRAPALI...the story of a court dancer and a warrior who fall in love in the 5th century B.C.

DRGeorge, it's a great play, maybe not so good as TARTUFFE on hypocrisy, but a hard one to pull off; Isabella's got to be sensuous beneath that chaste exterior, otherwise the plot makes little sense.

I just got back and it was a great production...great actors, great set, pretty good costumes.  I read the Director's Notes (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/tickets/05measuredirectors.html) in the program (reprinted on their website (http://www.harlequinproductions.org/)).  Here's a couple of paragraphs explaining what they did:

Quote
....Most people make the mistake of thinking of MEASURE FOR MEASURE as a standard "good triumphs over evil" story. It seems, under our standard template, as if that's what the story is trying to be. It is easy to mistake the Duke for "the Good Guy," since he is so full of pleasant and profound aphorisms. Angelo is quickly identifiable as an "Arch-Villain" and Isabella as the "Virtuous Victim." Unfortunately, we must make all manner of excuses to justify their behavior in the roles they seem to want to play. That's a problem.

We have chosen to take a different tack and believe we have discovered something much more consistent and compelling. We propose that the play is really a black satire on the Puritanism that threatened to destroy the lusty, rowdy lifestyle of Elizabethan England. The Duke, instead of being "The Good Guy", is an echo of the Puritan God that would create men and women with irresistible desires, make laws against succumbing to those desires, threaten them with eternal torment for doing so, then playing the kindly father figure when he forgives them. Angelo and Isabella, instead of being "evil" vs. "good", are simply human, both trying desperately to find spiritual purity through the denial of their physical selves, but discovering through each other the "monsters," "beasts," and "cowards" that lie within us all....

Scot Whitney

Since I've never seen the show before, I can't really judge how effective their version is compared to a more "traditional" version.  I did enjoy it (even with only getting about three hours of sleep this morning ::)).
