Well, you've read the notes, the notes neither went to the left nor the right, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're losing their moos.

Yes, I'm up at 5:36am. I usually am anyway but not in front of the computer. I'm eating my oatmeal at home because Ant is on Long Island. I will join him there on Friday but since he's gone I'm have breakfast at home today, tomorrow and Friday. I usually eat at the office so I don't wake him up. Today there is no one to wake up.

I'm at the office now after having a breakfast of oatmeal and blueberries. I have read e-mail, the NY Times, Dilbert, Doonesbury and Calvin and Hobbes. I know they don't publish any more but they still run the strip on line at

Calvin and Hobbes (http://www.gocomics.com/calvinandhobbes/)

I laugh every morning at C&H

And now I must do things here at the office. I will be back.

Good morning, all!  I have several things to accomplish today.  This morning, I have to finish Mr Ron Raines' orchestration for "I Won't Send Roses," and then I have a trek to Toyland to finish last minute packing nonsense and deal with another crisis from the California office.  After that, I must return and finish a chunk of a last-minute chart that arrived late last afternoon from Mr Kevin Spirtas.  I'd like to finish it in the next day and get it into priority mail to the copyist in LA.

Yesterday was a peculiar day dealing with the office, our sponsor waffling about the Fat Conductor With Limited Talent and Limitless Ego, and the needless ruffling of the feathers of a co-worker by a comment yesteday morning that was  retracted last night around 10:30.  Oy!  Sometimes the job ain't worth it!

BK, did you get your package?

Shameless plugs are always welcomed -- thanks SingSong!  He's the understudy, but it looks like he'll get to go on opening night, Aug. 11. He's the understudy for all the male roles, but the main guy he's been shadowing has a family wedding that weekend, so it looks like Case will get the chance. We thought it ain't gonna happen, but it just so happened that Bukowsical drew that performance slot so it looks like the lucky break gods are smiling on him.

That last week of September -- I'm still deciding on the exact day to come -- I'd love to see opening night, but I'm Asst. Director for our theatre's musical here -- Suburb -- and that's our closing weekend (I'm thinking my work will be done by then -- but I haven't approached the director yet -- but they may not appreciate my not being there to help strike the set and clean up -- but they all adore Cason so maybe they'll cut me some slack) or then the 22 or 23 to Oct. 1 Can't wait to me you and all the NYC HHWers and others converging for the event!

Der Brucer finally finished Deathly Hallows.  Fletcher should be happier now - he was getting so fed up with der B reading all the time that he knocked the book out of der B's hands and put his head on it, demanding some attention now!

I've just a few pages left in Zen of Fish - I've promised Chrissy from the seafood department that I'd loan it to her.  Her mate, Bill (meat department), should be getting Charcuterie back to me soon, too - he's impressed enough that he wants his own copy.

Yep, we're playing musical chairs with books around here.

Wednesday morning greetings!  It's a short night when I've worked until 9pm (as I did last night) and have to be back here at 9am (as I did this morning).  Yawn!

Today I have to look into flights to NYC and fill out the paperwork here for approval of the business part of the trip that I'm now referring to as our "NYMF Week."  I think we'll aim to see The Brain on Sept. 30 and Such Good Friends and Starfighter both on Oct. 3.

DH Richard and I will be in the city Sept. 29-Oct. 7, so it looks like our visit will overlap with DR Edi's and DR Miss Karen's.  Won't that be fun?

Here's a question for our esteemed BK:

Have you ever had hush puppies?  What did you think of them?

By which I mean, the corn meal treats sometimes served with southern cooking, particularly with pulled pork and the like.  Not the shoes, which I can't think would taste very good.

I served up some very good ham a few nights ago, and made hush puppies as the main side dish, using a recipe in the Lee Brothers Southern Cookbook.  Aside from my getting the oil too hot, the recipe made for a great number of very good hush puppies - perhaps too many for the two of us.

The problem is, I don't think it would be easy to halve the recipe, since it calls for just one egg.

I suppose we could share with the real puppies, the ones who need shushing every once in a while.   ::)

DR SWW - There's no such thing as "too many hush puppies".  ;)  *I still remember the family outings to "Family Fish House" growing up - my brothers and I would usually end up filling up on the free(!) hush puppies that we wouldn't have room in our tummies for our entrees.  In any case...

As for your surplus of hush puppies, you can freeze them, then just reheat them in the oven for a bit.  However, since the recipe is a "cheap" one, I don't think there's too much of a problem with throwing the rest of the batter in the sink/trash.

However, you could also keep the leftover batter for a day or two, then thin it out a bit with some water, and used it to coat some hot dogs for homemade corndogs.  :)

DRs Matt H and RLP - I hesitate to mention it, but my MGM Musicals Vol. 2 box did arrive from Amazon yesterday.

I delighted for you but DISGUSTED and ANGRY for myself. I didn't order mine from Amazon; I went the Deep Discount route, and for the last several box sets I've gotten from DD (including the Tyrone Power and Esther Williams boxes), I'd order on Wednesday, get the shipping notice Thursday, and the box would arrive on Monday.

Same series of events with the musicals box but it didn't come on Monday OR Tuesday.

Hence my disgust.

Assuming that I'll be getting the MGM musical box in the mail today, I will first watch THE PIRATE and then watch WORDS & MUSIC. I like/love all of the musicals in this box, even THAT MIDNIGHT KISS with Kathryn Grayson, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these DVDs look at least as good as the prints TCM has been airing of them over the last year. I have made DVD-Rs of many of them not knowing at the time that Warner was going to release them on commercial DVDs.

I'm going to have three Buena Vista TV sets arriving probably tomorrow (THE MUPPET SHOW 2, HOME IMPROVEMENT 7, and EIGHT SIMPLE RULES 1), so that's going to be occupying my time for the next week or so.

That's why I'd love to get these musical DVDs today so I can begin watching them before the onslaught of sitcoms arrives. Of course, I'm greatly looking forward to THE MUPPET SHOW. Some of those episodes I haven't seen since they first aired almost 30 years ago. (That CAN'T be true!)

Of course it isn't - it's nearly time to meet DR Jose for a day of fun! At least we HOPE it will be a day of fun. :)

I had hush puppies this week for the first time in many, many months. They were quite tasty and I would like some more, please...

I got an email from my dad today that was loaded with - I'm assuming - unintentional guilt. Something along the lines of "it was good to see you...your mom was lonely last night (he's out of town on business)...it would help if you were closer...etc." OY! Of course, she also asked me when I was going to get married and have her some grandchildren - again - and I was very confused by that because we've had this talk already...

My heart goes out to you about that. I'm sure others on this forum endured similar guilt trips and pressure, and it's infuriating to have to be the victim of it. YOUR happiness and well-being should be the ONLY consideration, and to put you in a position where you feel less than great about yourself especially now that you're an adult and make your own decisions about your life is completely unfair and thoughtless.

But no one ever said that parents are infallible or even reasonable about certain areas of their children's lives. Mine certainly weren't.

Question for BK:  what's become of the Sparkle, Neely, Sparkle play?  I don't recall you mentioning anything about it in many a moon.

The play, which is called Next December, is on the back-burner.  As some know, given the behavior of a then-friend, who one of the roles was based on, the whole thing got a little icky and I put it away.  It's pretty funny and a nice play, and I'll take it out and do it at some point.

And that's why MBarnum's mom is in "the home."   :o

LOL!

Although quite honestly, if I could afford a larger home..one where we could both have our own space... I would be fine with having my mom live with me. But I am remembering over that last year or so since she moved to Salem, exactly why it is I have never been that close to her.

I love her and we spend time together...we have dinner and I help her run errands every Wednesday...and I feel I have a  duty towards her, but I have never felt any kind of a bond between us. My sister feels the same way as I do and presumably so do my brothers, although we have never talked about it...but neither of my parents (nor my older sibling's father) were very close to their children. In fact when my father died in 2001 he hadn't seen his kids from his first marriage in close to 20 years and none of them came to his funeral despite their all living in Oregon.

Oddly enough all of my siblings have very close and happy relationships with their own kids, which is wonderful. They did not want to pass down the tradition (my mom, aunts and uncle were not all that fond of their own mother).

So there you go...more info about my family organization then you ever wanted to know. I feel no guilt about my relationship, or lack there-of, with my parents.

As I always say...you pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your family.

I've had hush puppies many times and I like them for a little while, then get bored.  I've also worn hush puppies.

Question for you: Did you get the shares e-mail?

I did misread it, and he technically could be there until next year, but I know he doesn't want to be and they're trying to replace him right now, hence the panic.  He sent me an e this morning saying he's asked for a meeting with the check writing guy to get this done.  Hopefully that will happen this week.

And - on a tangential topic - don't you just LOVE what Richard Rodgers does harmonically at the end of the show version of "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy", where Nellie and the girls keep tossing the repeating "I'm in Love" phrase back & forth, while the orchestra churns up & down the scale harmonically underneath them?

I watched the 1970 film Something for Everyone the other night.  Interesting story, and engrossing.  Hal Prince directed, and did a darn sight better with this than he did with the film of A Little Night Music.  Hugh Wheeler co-wrote the screenplay.  Angela Lansbury and Michael York both give magnetic performances.  But it's an unsettling story, just as The Page Turner was.

Julie-Sherlock is a Bernese Mountain Dog.  The breed is originally from Bern, Switzerland where they were all around farm dogs, pulling milk wagons & herding.  They were not used as guard dogs but lived with the families so they are very sweet.  Sherlock’s temperament is classic, just a big calm sweet boy.

Miss Karen!  Where are your priorities??  Won't this be Cason's NY acting debut??  Don't you feel that experiencing his (potential) opening night is more important than just being the ASSISTANT director of anything...regardless of strike??

Just my 2¢.

The Muppet Show Season 2??  It isn't supposed to be released until August 7...TWO WEEKS AWAY!!  How do you rate??

I love those old Popeye cartoons.  They are so trippy!
My problem with those cartoons was that I was always much more attracted to Bluto.  Even then.

LOL-Great pet name.

If no one can explain(my details would be inadequate) how to post a photo you can email it to me & I will post it.  I would like very much to see Doofus.

I never missed this show.  I loved the characters and the mysteries much more than those on Scooby-Doo.  I also liked the songs a lot--I even had the album!

Now all they need to do is release THE SPACE KIDDETTES on DVD to make my life complete!

Just finished writing a three-page letter to the alumni association membership.  I wanted to be very strong, but I tempered it all with humor.  You just try to do something helpful for these people, and they sit on their collective ASSES and don't help.  Which is why most of them are where they are, I hate to say it.

Craig & I heard it pronounced correctly when I was at Carnegie-Mellon with him.  I didn't know all these years we had it wrong-figured they knew better at the school. ;D  It feels so awkward I doubt I'll be getting it right unless I hear it correctly on a regular basis.

Miss Karen!  Where are your priorities??  Won't this be Cason's NY acting debut??  Don't you feel that experiencing his (potential) opening night is more important than just being the ASSISTANT director of anything...regardless of strike??

Just my 2¢.

;)

Okay, Mother Jorge ... I'm impressed, you've got Mothering 101 -- the chapter on "passive-aggressive guilt tripping" or in this case the "aggressive-passive guilt tripping" down perfectly --

Students take note -- see how Mother Jorge starts with the direct attack guilt trip but stops suddenly then backs off with the innocent "just my 2 cents" then for an extra dose of sugar adds a sweet little wink -- that leaves the child feeling guilty but unable to argue, debate or fight with you about it -- you know, get your motherly dig in quickly and then douse it with sweetness before they have time to get on the defensive ...very, very good Mother Jorge, you've been watching and learning...

Miss Karen - I saw a production of a musical called Suburb a number of years ago, mounted shortly after it won the Richard Rodgers award.  I assume it's the same show?  I enjoyed it very much, and thought it had some great musical numbers.

Yep, DR Julie, that's the one. I think it can be a very charming and enjoyable musical -- with, like you noted, some great numbers. The staging and set have been giving me fits though (I'm not big on chorus folks in black standing on blocks in the background like a choir) so we're having them be characters in the neighborhood, the mall, etc. -- but I had a eureka moment this afternoon and after about a month of struggling with it (usually I can envision a set right off the bat -- but this one is written with scenes jumping all over the place location wise so it took a while to figure out how to make it work) it came to me and it's going to make the staging and pace flow and move along perfectfully.  Pacing is another one of my pet peeves. Now, I just hope the director can envision my vision...

1)  PayPal is making it impossible for me to send my Brain share through them.  BK, I've tried several different computers and a couple of work-arounds and nothing worked.  Per your email, I'll put a check in the snail mail ASAP!

2)  Flights to New York, from either Dayton or Cincinnati (we're right between the 2 airports) are expensive and inconvenient.  Does anyone else find it absurd to fly from southern Ohio to Chicago, St. Louis, Charlotte, or Atlanta to get to NYC?

I didn't think the US Airways fares were outrageous from Dayton.

The book it's based on is even more bizarre with more murders, as I recall.

Tourists don't seem to be interested in Carnegie Hall any more, not since they put a carousel within an awful Toys R Us.  But I used to say "How do you get to Carnegie Hall?  Take the N or the R to 57th."

Noel - Small world - Nick Borisjuk was the sound designer on Skip's show HERRINGBONE, which Roger Rees just directed last month at Williamstown.

Columbus is even closer for us, DR Noel, and I may explore that a bit.  Being a 2-hour drive from our house, though, we'd have to factor in the cost of gas.  I'm hoping that the JetBlue sale might put some pressure on the other carriers to lower some of their convenient flights.

To those who have received their MGM Musicals department (sorry MattH):  are you noticing the severe soundtrack degradation on The Pirate, as I am?  I don't remember it being this bad in the That's Entertainment clips (but I'll have to go back and check--maybe it was always this bad).  For instance, listen to the first 5 minutes of the film, with fairly severe high frequency hiss and distortion, and then magically at 5:05, it all clears and everything's great (for about 3 minutes, when it goes back again).  Curious to hear from others on this.

BTW, MattH, just so you don't want to throw *too* many things, I went to Border's and bought one today, since I had a 30% off coupon--which brought my price right down into the DDD range.

Well, we found out this afternoon that it looks like they have found Susan Fast, thorugh the GPS records from her car. Her son is on his way home to Florida and another editor will take over on-lining SAVING GRACE & HEARTLAND since he'll probably be down there for several weeks. It's very bad, but at least it has been resolved and the family will be able to have some closure.

Thanks to DR's who sent their vibes---they will certainly need them now.

Years of watching Lassie, Leave it to Beaver, Family Affair and such. I owe it all to growing up in front of the tube watching mild mannered, humanist shows TV shows.
Kinda makes me wonder what Bill O'Reilly, Michael Moore and Ann Coulter watched when they were young.   :P

I'm uncertain what to do about the justified or ragged right issue.  The justified looks neat and all, but it's doing that thing I hate, putting spaces between words that are spacier than should be - I don't know if it's the way Grant did it, or if I'd have to live with it, and I won't live with it because it's gross.  The ragged, like all my other books, isn't as neat, but there's something about it that I like (although I haven't been able to find one other book in my collection that has a ragged right) - it's different, and the spacing is, of course, perfect.  I've asked Grant about the spacing problem - if he gives an answer that makes sense, then I'll go with that, but I'm not going to proof further until I know.  The ragged version probably has virtually nothing else to correct, whereas the justified version has introduced some bad breaks, etc. and has to be proofed  completely and carefully.

As someone who was there at the transition from typsetting (which I did) to word processing (which I did way too much of, LOL), what you need is "leading" (led-ing), i.e., adjusted space between letters and words.  I haven't poked around on Word, but I'll betcha it has a leading option.

My work here is done. :)

I had a phone message from Charles Bloom, son of my friend and interviewee the late Carolyn Kearney. It seems that Carolyn's husband (Charlie's stepdad) had a stroke this week and it was severe enough that he will be unable to care for their 8 year old dog Koda.

The times that I visited Carolyn and Al during my LA trips were all the more fun because of Koda...he is such a sweetie pie....so if any DRs in the southern California area, or perhaps even the Arizona area (!) might like to give a home to a well behaved, mild mannered, loves children, 8 year old mixed breed (probably Lab and Irish setter or something like that would be my guess) dog please get in touch with me ASAP! And just remember that Koda belonged to the star of THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE and HOT ROD GIRL!! You would have a celebridog!

Currently Koda is with Charles' aunt who is 75 and not able to care for a dog either.

If I have time tonight I will scan a photo of Koda and post it. He is genuinly a sweety and if I didn't have Bosco I would likely have paid to have him shipped up her to me!

Good Evening!

Well... Since it was such a nice day here in NYC... In fact, just too nice to stay inside all day... Not even in a theatre watching Patti LuPone as Momma Rose...  Instead...

Lunch at the new-ish Landmarc in the Time-Warner Center.  A good burger (served with Bernaise sauce on the side), a good chicken sandwich, and Cotton Candy (which is "off the menu") for dessert.  Strawberry Cotton Candy!

A walk through SoHo and the West Village with stop at Uniqlo, Marie-Belle Chocolates (for some surprisingly spicy Spicy Chocolate Gelato), and Magnolia Bakery (for some Hummingbird Cupcakes and Banana Pudding).  :)

And, finally, a couple of minutes sitting in a park listening to a cool Dixieland-ish combo - while enjoying our Magnolia treats.  -And the singer really could SANG!!

All in all, a very nice day in New York City!

Not long after we were married Keith’s father used to ask when I was going to get pregnant.  My response was to ask if he would pay the bills.  That kept him quiet, for awhile.  Then Keith’s brother provided them with a grandchild & he left us alone.

Around that time my parents began the pressure for us to have a baby.  Realizing we couldn’t afford one my mother offered financial support.  I wanted a baby so badly I was tempted to accept.  Sadly we both knew an acceptance of money also included their, or my mother’s, right to tell us how to take care of the baby.  Once my brother’s wife became pregnant the offer was dropped.

Bryan has said he doesn’t want children & Craig is now the age we were when we had Bryan.  Neither are ready for children & I fear by the time a grandchild, if it ever happens, comes along we will be too old to enjoy the experience.

TCM is running GODSPELL. I knew that several of the actors went on to have very successful careers, but was sad to see that 3 of them had died at a relatively young age. I was also surprised that so many of them didn't do much in show business after that.

For only $929 I can fly first class from Medford to Phoenix, with a stop in Vegas.  For $424 I can fly non-stop to Phoenix but I would have to suffer in coach.

For $328 I can fly to Portland, then Seattle, and finally to Phoenix.  For the same amount I can skip the stop in Seattle.

Now that I'm a great aunt, no one asks if I'm going to have children. I like that. I wanted a baby when I was in my early 30s, but I was recently divorced and really in no shape for a relationship let alone a baby.  Then I just started enjoying my life and decided I didn't want to raise kids, either alone or with someone else.  I've never regretted that decision.

I have been churning out vocal arrangements all day for my Pacific Pops Choir.  Our theme this fall is time, so I finished the nice Paul Van Dyk "Time of Our Lives" tune today (it's the one in all the Jeep commercials right now).  I was kind of dozing off whilst watching t.v. this afternoon and suddenly from the depths of my subconscious came The Four Freshman (or whoever) singing "Green Leaves of Summer," which of course is a time song, so I got right up and had that arrangement all nicely notated in about an hour.  So I think I'll do "Twilight Time" next and call it a day for this particular season--we'll use existing "time" charts for the rest of the tunes.

...and you can't pick your friends' noses.

Does anyone plan on getting this set next week?

Garsh!  I would, but I already have the Captain Scarlett boxed set...and I'm thinking this would repeat those shows, too.  What to do?  What to do?

TPunk, they were all last week, EPAs for all NYMF shows.  I don't know about others, but we're certainly not cast yet - if you'd like to come in when I'm there casting, I'll arrange it.

I am so happy that dance classes are starting back up again this saturday. Maybe I will see Ben's Ant there.

Nope, not this Saturday. We will be on Long Island. Anthony is already out there and I'm leaving Friday afternoon. We will be back on Sunday afternoon. The full schedule is in force so next Saturday August 4th you'll probably see him.

Good Evening!

A very interesting "So You Think You Can Dance?" tonight.  Alas, the one couple that the judges criticized the most were truly done a disservice by their choreographer.  And, sadly, even though I could feel the judges wanting to fault the choreographer, they did not.  :-\

Tomorrow night's result show should be very interesting.

Here's another one I will be ordering:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v130/WandaDuck/61poFVn-P1L._SS500_.jpg) (http://www.amazon.com/Josie-Pussycats-Complete-Janet-Waldo/dp/B000RPD0DM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-7576901-0719933?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1185390213&sr=1-1)

I never missed this show.  I loved the characters and the mysteries much more than those on Scooby-Doo.  I also liked the songs a lot--I even had the album!

Now all they need to do is release THE SPACE KIDDETTES on DVD to make my life complete!

I vaguely remember this show...

Some of the morning shows I remember were THe Care Bears, Smurfs, Strawberry Shortcake, Pound Puppies

There used to be some live action saturday shows on CBS  back in the late 70s and early 80s that I remenber such as Isis, Shazam, Thunder and a few others. There was a sci fi one that was on where people would travel the country after some sort of disaster in an RV.

For some odd reason, The guys from one of the dorms used to like to come to our dorm and watch Electric Company and Sesame Street.  Zoom / Contact 1-2-3 and Big Blue Marble.

Season Two is available at the DVD shop (read: porn store) across the street from my theatre. It's a little over $40...

But can't someone still open an account with your name and birthdate and social security number? How would the bank know said person is deceased?

Banks have to check the status of the number before it can be used to open an account

Is Koda good with cats?  DR Laura has been wanting a dog.

I don't know for sure as Carolyn did not have any cats. He is probably like Bosco and doesn't even pay any attention to them. He has such a sweet disposition I can't imagine he would bother them at all.

Today was another great day at the office. Very busy, but having Nadia there was the difference between night and day.  She is great.  She doesn't have a legal background, I don't think she's ever been a secretary, but all I have to do is show her how to do something once and she gets it. And she is positive, wants to learn and better her life and she is fabulous with my clients.  I hired her on gut feeling and I'm glad I did.  Ok, it's only been 2 days, but she's already talking about how she can't wait to see the snow fly outside the window, lol.  I guess she's planning to stay!

I was so frustrated and disappointed with not having the MGM musicals tonight that I refused to watch anything new.

As people who visited our Last Starfighter NYMF page know, Julie is our producer/production manager for the NYMF production.  While I'm sure it will get crazy close to the actual production, having her there to manage things has been so reassuring.  But I bring this up tonight because it felt so cool going through publciity options for our NYMF show just before seeing GYPSY tonight.  It somehow felt very "New York theater," in the best sense of the expression.

A friend of mine who works for Marriott says that is his favorite Marriott location in the city.  It's in a semi-historic building - can't remember what makes it historic right now - and the location is surprisingly convenient for being on the East Side.

It's the only Marriott property, other than the Upper East Side that I have enough points to use.  I can get a flight on Midwest with cookies for $218 - they just started a sale....ok....time to start booking things and buy tickets and joine NYMF... there are just too many friends doing things to miss this trip!

Well, I went to the focus group this afternoon and evidently, they had another group yesterday.  It was interesting.  There were about 10 of us and a facilitator and another woman typing on a laptop computer who never said anything.  They also recorded the whole thing.  They asked general questions like how long have we been involved with the Center, what kinds of performances/performance groups do we like to go to, what are the good/bad things about the Center, what specific things would we like to have come to the Center...things like that.  It lasted a couple of hours and we were told that we'd all be contacted in August with the results of the focus groups.  And then I went to my sister's house.

Well, it turns out that my sister did not get the widescreen HD TV today.  She needs to make sure that there is enough clearance space for ventilation and she's going to check several on-line places to compare prices, shipping and possible tax amounts.  At least all of the shelves are up, except that she had gotten doors for the shelfs so that the TV can be hidden when not in use, but she got the wrong size door tracks.  She got one set of 70-inch wide tracks instead of two sets of 48-inch wide tracks.  Darn...now she has to go back to Ikea. ;)

And since it's still "Ask BK Day," I finally have a question for anyone.  I thought that I had lost my 512 MB memory stick but actually found it earlier this evening.  My question is:  How long do I need to let it dry after it's been washed in the washing machine...assuming that putting it in the dryer (on purpose) is not a good thing?  And I'm not kidding. ::)

I hope it still works!  I don't think that there was anything tremendously important on it, but it did have some things saved. :( Dopey me.

I too am planning my various NY trips. Now that my classes are set in stone I need to figure out what two show weekends I am coming. I am going to try to make the Brain opening, but it requires me to miss 3 classes, so it depends on my teacher's kindness.
