Well, you've read the notes, the notes were crusty, and how it is time for you to post until the crusty cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: SMALTO!
-
FJL, please e-mail me the exact address of the theater.
-
I love pumpkin pie.
Also, custard.
-
FJL, please e-mail me the exact address of the theater.
If I may "intrude"...
The name of the theatre - 59E59 - is also the address of the theatre: 59 E. 59th Street. (North side of the street, between Madison and Park)
-
Well we are back home on te Island of Long after a lovelier than lovely evening at the home of FJL and his everlovin' Skip
-
The only good thing about it still being sooooo hot in LA is that the longer it stays warm, the better chance we have of having a cold holiday season. I would really like it not to be 90 degrees at the end of December. I'm not in the mood for flamingos and palm trees this year. I need pinecones and snow flakes for decorations.
-
Good morning or good evening everyone.
Must now read notes and posts.
-
Good Evening!
And, yes, I too am back from a lovely gathering at Chez L&K - or Chez K&L if you prefer reverse alphabetical order.
I really have nothing else to add to the praise that's already been heaped upon our hosts, and Skip's wonderful dinner. It really was a wonderful soirée, and a(nother) delicious dinner.
Thank You, Skip. Thank You, Fred. Thank You, Toby. Thank You, Dylan.
:)
-
As usual the food was amazing - the conversation was scintillating and the time flew by all too fast
-
thank you! thank you!! thank you!!!

And here is the Vixter.

Wow! The Vixter has really grown up!

Here's Vixmom and elmore, slightly out of focus on account of the vodka crust.

Vixmom is looking great too

Finally, here is the Vixter, Jose, and Rodzinski.

Everyone looks great!

After parting ways with DR Rodzinski and our very own bk at the corner of 45th & 9th Avenue, I continued walking up 9th Avenue, and as I walked I made a couple of phone calls to my brothers and my parents.
I've been trying to figure out what and where I was going to celebrate my birthday on Wednesday. I was really hoping to do what I did last year: just walk the city and meet people along the way. But when my brother, Jay, was able to fly back East this week for some vacation, we had started planning some sort of joint birthday celebration for me and my brother's girlfriend. Well... I thought they were planning something.
My mom was thinking of having everyone - all four boys, and the nieces and nephews (grandkids) - get together Wednesday night on the actual day of my birthday in Richmond. Well... It turns out my brother, Mike, is flying to Vegas tonight for a work assignment, and he won't get back until Thursday night. So, after making a bunch of phone calls, we'll all be getting together Friday night in Fairfax. -And I can still do my own celebration on Wednesday here in NYC. :) -Then I will head down to Richmond with my parents Friday night, and head back up to DC on Monday, then back to NYC on Wednesday.
It's so nice to have a plan now. :)
-
Great pics.
Well, I must admit I'm officially excited now about this move to Blu-ray.com. My first review is live, no one has complained about it yet ;), and I just ordered a supercool Sony Soundbar for my bedroom HT environment which should give me quasi-surround sound with no wires. I of course will have a "real" surround system for the downstairs home theater environment which will be dedicated solely to reviewing.
-
Thanks so much to all who visited Monday evening!
-
DR Michael S - "Pink Fish", as was previously mentioned, was written by Alan Menken. It's a song from his piano bar days. It was "resurrected" a couple of years ago when he contributed it to a revue of his songs that was being presented by some students at NYU. It's now published in "The Alan Menken Songbook".
-
Dear MBarnum, what sad news you posted yesterday. Please give your friend my condolences.
-
Did I miss the Two's Company dvd, I thought I emailed bk for a copy. Maybe I just starred at the signed poster on the wall and thought I did.
-
Sounds like the HHW party was the place to be.
-
Goodnight all.
Happy Tuesday.
-
I was just catching up - Cilla I am so very sorry to hear the bad news about your friend
MBarnum - I am also sadened by hearing your friends' terrible news
MIcahel Shayne - I believe I have also been remiss in extending my condolences to you and your family on your loss

TOD - Skips Blueberry pie may have been the best pie I have ever eaten - a close second would be the Sakatoonberry Pie we had last August at the Berry Barn in Saskatoon.
-
I have photos to posr but I must be up in 5 and half hours so laters!!!
-
Oh...
Tonight's/last night's Blueberry Pie did utilize a vodka crust.
-
However, should any DRs like to make a "vodka crust", here's the original recipe that started it all back in 2007. It was developed in the kitchens of "Cook's Illustrated" magazine.
Foolproof Pie Dough
- makes one 9-inch double-crust pie -
The trick to this pie crust is the inclusion of vodka. Eighty-proof vodka, which is 60 percent water and 40 percent alcohol, adds moistness to the dough without aiding in gluten formation since gluten doesn't form in ethanol. Although the recipe includes 8 tablespoons of liquid, the alcohol vaporizes during baking, resulting in a tender crust that only contains 6 1/2 tablespoons of water. Because of the extra liquid, the dough will be moister than most standard pie doughs and will require up to 1/4 cup more flour.
Ingredients
2 1/2 cups (12 1/2 ounces) unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon table salt
2 tablespoons sugar
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) cold unsalted butter, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1/2 cup cold vegetable shortening, cut into 4 pieces
1/4 cup cold vodka
1/4 cup cold water
Procedure
1. Process 1 1/2 cups flour, salt, and sugar in food processor until combined, about 2 one-second pulses. Add butter and shortening and process until homogeneous dough just starts to collect in uneven clumps, about 15 seconds (dough will resemble cottage cheese curds and there should be no uncoated flour). Scrape bowl with rubber spatula and redistribute dough evenly around processor blade. Add remaining cup flour and pulse until mixture is evenly distributed around bowl and mass of dough has been broken up, 4 to 6 quick pulses. Empty mixture into medium bowl.
2. Sprinkle vodka and water over mixture. With rubber spatula, use folding motion to mix, pressing
down on dough until dough is slightly tacky and sticks together. Divide dough into two even balls and flatten each into 4-inch disk. Wrap each in plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 45 minutes or up to 2 days.

-
Thanks for sharing the recipe, DR JoseSPiano!! :)
-
You're very welcome, DR DAW.
*And once the dough is chilled, you basically treat it like any other pie dough. The original recipe it was a paired with was a blueberry pie. It was baked at 400 degrees for the first 30 minutes, then 350 for the remaining 30-40 minutes.
-
OK...
Goodnight.
-
Loved the pictures of the NYC get-together! Will there be more?? ;D
-
Did I miss the Two's Company dvd, I thought I emailed bk for a copy. Maybe I just starred at the signed poster on the wall and thought I did.
Me, too. I'd still love a copy of the "Two's Company" DVD...if it's possible (and of course, after BK gets back to California). :)
-
I'm off to bed. I have a meeting at 10:00 and I MUST be there! Actually, it's some kind of ergonomic training and I just want to get it out of the way. Everyone has to go to one of two sessions.
So, good night, all!

Sounds like the HHW party was the place to be.
DR Sam, an HHW gathering is always the place to be! This is the best social group in the world.
Good morning, all! I slept quite well, with a ton of strange dreams about working on a production of CANDIDE starrng my friend Bill Burden who plays Candide for a lot of opera companies. I think Kim Criswell was in the dream as the Old Lady, too.
Today, I begin at the McGlinnventory till around 1 or 1:30. After that, hopefully off to Local 802 for a recording check, and then over to the Lyceum Theatre and the Shubert Archive to examine some original orchestra parts from Life Begins At 8:40.

You dildo!

What a lovely cool summer morning for a dog walk!!!!
Ruminating about doggie depth perception. It must be good, right? I mean, you see all these amazing dogs making stunning frisbee catches, etc., etc. And yet...
When a cat crosses the street well ahead of us, I notice that Zach usually starts "looking" for said cat about three driveways too early.
-
Why DR elmore3003 - you say the sweetest things!! :D ;D
-
Glutens for all! On the house!
-
Glutens for all! On the house!
Does that include flapjacks?? :)
-
Not much sleep tonight, so I already took one load of stuff-- (mainly clothes) over to the new house.
In awhile, I will be moving wonderful things like my box of 45's and my Voice of Music portable phonograph with the special wide 45 adapter spindle. You have to plug the thing in and turn it one for awhile to let the tubes warm up. But then again, I'm about the same age as the phonograph, and I don't work as well until my tubes warm up!
-
DR elmore3003, don't miss THIS (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/25/arts/music/25time.html?_r=1&ref=music) interesting article in today's New York Times about musical length and time perception in opera!
-
TOD: My grandmother's rhubarb pie. A close second id Marie Callender;'s rhubarb pie ( the rhubarb is tart and not overly sweetened).
DR Laura's Apple pie, MusicGuy's apple pie. I used to make a decent apple pie with an orange peel glaze on top that was quite nice. I think I learned that from Julia Child. I'm not a big apple pie fan or really much of a pie person (I'm a Cake man), so you know these pies have to be good!
-
Everyone looks great!
I agree-- an outstandingly attractive group of lovely people!

I don't know, DAW. It's YOU!
-
TOD:
Can't remember specifically the best pie I ever ate. There was a place near where I used to work that made a pretty mean Chocolate Cream pie.
But my favorite flavor of pie, hands down, is strawberry rhubarb. The combination of tangy sour and sweet can't be beat!!! :)
-
Thank you, DR Kerry. ;D
-
I dropped my big announcement at last night's event, and here's the news for everyone who could not be there. I will be working on the Broadway revival of FINIAN'S RAINBOW as the orchestrator for the adjustments being made for the production. I love Rob Berman, the musical director, and I'm very honored to be asked to work on the show. I loved it at Encores!
-
I'm here at the office.
-
Congrats (again) to Larry on FINIAN'S RAINBOW!!!
-
I had a wonderful time last night. I had to leave early because I was fading and I had to get to the office this morning.
For those of you not there last night (and for those of you who didn't hear), I (along with 32 other employees) have been offered Early Retirement!
Yes, the FC is having a difficult time and they are looking for ways to trim costs. Although they won't lose me just yet. I can't afford to take early retirement. I'll take my chances with involuntary terminations after the early retirement is figured out.
I can only go one day at a time right now and see what each morning brings.
-
It was wonderful to see the beautiful Deb (VixMom)and Vick(y)(ie) (I don't know how she spells it :() and Tom/Rodzinski. Oh, yes and the lovely Julie. We are quite a group.
-
The pie last night was amazing! Topped off with Häagen-Dazs Vanilla Ice Cream it was a wonderful way to end the meal.
-
Toby and Dyan were on good behavior and they fell for our Vixter, especially Dylan, IIRC, who was at Vixter's feet for most of the evening.
-
Here we are at Page 3 at 8:22am.
Whoda Thunk It.
-
Good Morning Arnold Brockman.
-
I need to get back to Pittsburgh. Not the City where we have dear TD but the Foundation.
Bye for now.

This is fabulous news, and I'm SO happy for you, DR Elmore! COngratulations!
-
Good morning!
More hot weather in the high 80s, so no relief here. The rest of the week looks dismally similar,
-
I am very draggy this morning. The sleep position suggestions worked a bit, but I still didn't make it through the night. I wonder if I ever will again. I shouldn't be depressed. It's only the first day of therapy!
-
Hang in there, DR Matt H.!!!!
-
I did have a strange dream about waking up this morning and finding four big boxes of review discs at the front door. Naturally, when I checked a little bit ago, they weren't there!
-
DR elmore3003 - what incredible news!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D
I am SO happy for you!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS
on landing such a wonderful gig!!!!!!
-
Hang in there, DR Matt H.!!!!
Thanks. I am going to try! I'm sure I'll be heading down to try to take a nap in a little bit. If not, I'll fall fast asleep after I eat a hot lunch today.
-
Thanks for the pics, bk. Looks like a wonderful time with a great bunch of people. Glad we could all be a part of it in some small way with these pics and comments from those who were there.
-
***CONTINUED GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT VIBES***
for DR Ben!!!!!!!
-
Once again, my work project is in limbo. Next in my queue is CRIMINAL MINDS-Season 4, but EARTH and LIE TO ME both come out prior to it, so if either arrives in the next few days, I'll have to put CRIMINAL MINDS off to the side and work on one of those releases.
-
TOD:
In the grand scheme of things, I prefer cake to pie, but a wonderful pecan pie or apple, cherry, or strawberry pie can be out of this world.
I had a pecan pie at a family reunion some years ago that was without question the best I've ever had. Nothing I've ever tasted before or since has ever measured up to the taste of that pie.
-
Isn't Boston Cream Pie actually a cake?
-
! ! ! ! ! A BIG Congrats to DR Elmore on his terrific assigment! ! ! ! ! !
-
TOD:
Best pies I ever had were my dad's apple pie and my Aunt Helen's blueberry and cherry pies. It's unfortunate that they took the secrets of their crusts with them.
-
Happy Birthday to Leonard Bernstein. He would have been 91 today.
-
Wonderful news from DR ELMORE - "this time of the year!"
-
I am having my hair color changed today.
-
The party fo-toes were most lovely!
I want a vodka crust.
-
Congratulations DR Elmore!
-
Last night I found myself watching WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and I have to say that I really don't like this movie. It's pretty much clumsily made and artless. Aside from Christopher Lloyd's judge (a character that really doesn't fit in with the film) and the novelty of seeing the different studio cartoon characters, I would never make an effort to view this again.
-
I'm up after another decent but not great night's sleep. The new books have been ordered and should be here in ten days. I've answered e-mails and shall shortly mosey on over to the gym.
-
Re Two's Company - yes, I finally got the replacements in, so anyone who wants one, it's ten bucks, and that will include postage. Same routine for paying, and be sure to put the title in the invoice or I really will get confused. Just do me one little favor and don't place orders until Friday - that way I can print them out when I get home.
-
We disagree about ROGER RABBIT, a lot, DR Dan. I think the ending is sloppy and rather rudimentary, but I think the film is an astonishing achievement, is hilarious, and always entertaining on repeat visits. I'm happy to have it in my collection, and I'd love to see it on Blu-ray.
Horse racin', I guess.
-
I saw the UPS truck slow down on the street a little bit ago, so I'm assuming he left something at my door. I'm heading down to find out. Then, I'm going to try to take a nap and see what happens.
WBBL.
-
I forgot to mention that I found Brian Boitano's cooking show premiere on Sunday on Food Network a trifle annoying. Mostly with the stupid techno-editing-for-people-with-no-attention-spans and the tricked-up format.
The recipes themselves, however, looked remarkably delicious.
-
And thank you, Kerry, for the compliment. Although I would bow to MusicGuy's baking knowledge any day.
-
Tuesday morning greetings! Richard is off to the local Episcopal church to teach and I'm about to do a major grocery shopping. We've been eating on-the-run pretty much ever since we got back from Chicago and I'm ready to get my cooking act back together.
-
The photos and reports from last night make me wish we could have been at Fred & Skip's!
-
Congratulations to dear DR Elmore on the Finian's Rainbow revival!!! How soon do Richard and I get to start planning our trip?

Vibes to DR Ben on the job front!

Congrats to DR Elmore! I sang Necessity in our high school production.
-
Vibes to DR Ben~~~~~~
-
Thanks for the vibes about Steve and Gretchen. It's really just starting to sink in for me. I'm going up there this weekend to do a Mentos Geyser show for Steve. We haven't tried Diet Coke yet. I think that may do better than the diet soda we did in July
-
Better go. I'm meeting the rep from the Chamber at 10:00 AM so she can tell me the benefits of joining. I told her I had been on the chamber board at the lake and had been the president of the chamber in Spirit Lake, so I had a very good idea about the benefits and want to join, but she insisted I need to sit through her talk, so we're meeting for coffee. I can live with that
-
Good news DR Elmore!
Good luck vibes for DR Ben. ~~~~~~~~~~
Nice to read about the HHW party last night. The food sounded great!

-
Loved hearing about the HHW partay! Having previously attended two of these at Skip and Fred's, I am quite envious
-
Elmo!!! Wonderfully wondrous news!!! Some of us is late bloomers - but oh, how we bloom!!! All good things, my dearling!!!
Thanks for the partay pix - makes the rest of us homesick for our little hhw family.
Pie: best one was Shepherd's Pie, peppered with actual shepherd on top...
-
I'm checking in quickly, before packing my one bag and heading for ye olde airport and hopping my flight back to Seattle. What a whirlwind of a weekend this has been - running to and fro, thither and yon - feels like two weeks since Friday. Never did see my brother - but I dropped in on Rikki and Tami, saw Tami's little grandson (long story, there... which ends with the word "oy..."), gave a piano lesson, saw three plays and a literary event at my theater, attended a board meeting and a meeting with my boss, got either promoted, demoted, or emoted into the Development job, depending upon how ya view it - time will tell...
So I'll have another couple of idyllic weeks as my little woodland hideaway, before shlepping down to LA for the 7 or 8 months I'll call 'winter' - having no better appellation for what comes down between mid-September and mid-May up the mountain.
-
Anyhoo - later, skaters!
-
Hi and bye, PennyO!
-
Back from the gym. My legs were very sore from yesterday, so I ended up doing a brisk three miles, then doing a combo platter of brisk walking and slightly less than brisk running for 1.8 more miles - I burned over 500 calories and did the full hour.
-
A little something for DR TD. A shot of his fave actor Shahid Kapoor with actress Rani Mukherji (gossip says the two dislike each other) at a recent awards show.
(http://pics.livejournal.com/filmi_girl/pic/00622e1h)
If you have never seen Shahid in a film, by all means rent JAB WE MET or 36 CHINA TOWN!
-
I'll be meeting Mr. Spirtas at one-fifteen and we'll have a spot of lunch before my rehearsal.
-
JAB WE MET
I don't think I've met JAB yet.
-
Congratulations, Larry--that is fabulous!
Just one question: will you, or won't you, be wearing blackface? (A Castrecl reference). ;)

~~~~~SMOOTH MOVE VIBES TO DR KERRY~~~~~
-
Thank you all for the good vibes for FINIAN'S RAINBOW. DR cillaliz, "Necessity" is one of my favorite numbers. It was originaly meant to be sung by the black gospel brothers but it never worked and was cut. Supposedly, Milton Rosenstock - I think he was the original MD - worked up the version in the show with the ladies of the chorus, presented it to Harburg and Lane, who loved it, and that's how you ended up with it.
I just saw "Mandy" in blackface in THIS IS THE ARMY, and Senator Rawlins looked nothing like that! He looked like a Metropolitan Opera baritone darkened up to sing Amonasro in AIDA. Oy to Camner!
-
The pastor's wife stopped by to play with kittens, and we were quite dismayed that Antonia hissed and wriggled to get away from her. She needs some work!
-
DR Elmore - Richard says, "Congratulations!" too! I've discovered that your show opens about the time Ragtime previews begin, so we're thinking a late October/early November visit would be a good idea.
-
Elmore has a thing for hair. He is always climbing onto our necks and playing in our hair -- he did this to the pastor's wife, too.
-
Off to Kroger...bye for now!
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm going to win the $252 Million Mega-Millions Lottery tonight! ::)
Then you can afford to take everyone (first class) with you on your potential project since you will need, as VixDeb said yesterday, an extensive entourage ;D
-
DR Ben - First class? What?!?!? If I did win, I'd just go ahead and charter a private plane. ::)
-
Hmmm... I guess I should stop being a lazy slug sometime this afternoon..
But when?
-
DR Ben - First class? What?!?!? If I did win, I'd just go ahead and charter a private plane. ::)
That works too!
From a CL ad in Portland:
I was born in Poland and have traces of accent while singing. Contact me if you'd like to help me polish my songs.
He obviously meant to say, "help me Polish my songs."
Oy, you're making me Hungary!
We actually had the sharecroppers in blackface, at least in make- up to make us appear to be black. I'm almost ashamed to admit that now. Thanks for the history, Elmore, I didn't know that.
Happy Birthday to Leonard Bernstein. He would have been 91 today.
According to my Futurama calendar, today is also Walt Kelly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Kelly)'s birthday (born 1913, died 1973) and Elvis Costello's birthday (born 1954). :)
So it was all an experiment...
The title of the next volume of my memoirs.
-
I tried to take a nap when I went back down, but I couldn't drop off. Sure enough, get a hot lunch in me, and I was out like a light for thirty minutes. Of course, I was working at the time, so that part of the work had to be rewatched.
-
And in other theater news...Producers Withdraw from Broadway-Aimed Busker Alley Production (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/132223-Producers_Withdraw_from_Broadway-Aimed_Busker_Alley_Production).
:-\
This poor show has been cursed from day one. I think maybe it should be left alone to die a quiet death.
-
When I couldn't drop off, I watched two more episodes of DOLLHOUSE. The first was a marvelous murder mystery with Echo playing the reincarnation of the dead woman. Excellent show, spoiled only by some silliness with comic relief that took away from the interesting stories being told.
-
The second episode guest starred the sensational Alan Tudyk who had much comic business to perform early in the episode that had me in stitches. Then, when a shocking twist was inserted into the story, I couldn't have been more taken aback.
-
While I ate lunch, I watched the summer season finale of RAISING THE BAR. Both cases were very involving, and I greatly enjoyed the episode.
-
No Blu-ray discs arrived in the mail, so I went ahead with CRIMINAL MINDS. I got four episodes watched, all of them quite dramatic. I especially liked one that guest starred Wil Wheaton as a motel manager who had an elaborate kidnap/rape/murder spree going.
-
Bonus features on disc one included two deleted scenes and two behind-the-scenes featurettes on the making of particular special effects sequences in the season premiere and in the Wil Wheaton episode.
-
With nothing special coming on TV tonight for me other than RESCUE ME (which I'll record and watch tomorrow while I eat lunch), I should be able to get through four more episodes on disc two and on into some episodes on disc three.
CRIMINAL MINDS did 26 episodes last season (four more than the usual dramatic show), so I have seven discs in all to get through and I need to make every second count.
-
Back from the grocery. Not only am I set up for the next 2 nights' dinners, they will both generate leftovers:
Meatloaf --> sandwiches
Roast chicken --> chicken salad
Also, several kinds of fresh fruit and some dark chocolate M & Ms.
-
I did have time to scan through today's ONE LIFE TO LIVE. Kyle and Fish were on, and Layla has finally been clued in to what's going on with Fish. Good! Hopefully, that will be ending soon, and we can get to the real love triangle I'm interested in with the show.
-
TOD - not many pies I don't like, except rhubarb and mincemeat. I've tried to like both, but it's not to be. I like to make blueberry pie in the summer (graham cracker crust, fresh blueberries, currant jelly glaze, sour cream topping) and pumpkin and pecan for holidays. One of the most spectacular pies from a restaurant is the chocolate cordial pie at the Grande Finale in Glendale, a Cincinnati suburb:
The pastor's wife stopped by to play with kittens, and we were quite dismayed that Antonia hissed and wriggled to get away from her. She needs some work!
I had some wonderful peach ice cream for dessert today. I hadn't had any in quite a long time, and it was a very refreshing change from my usual chocolate (when I indulge in ice cream at all).
I had not had any ice cream for months until I started having these physical problems, and then I decided I needed some comfort food to lift my spirits.
-
My afternoon surf went by quite quickly so I'm ready to head back down and get started back with CRIMINAL MINDS.
WBBL.
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
The Carlyle in Arlington, VA, used to feature a "Mile High Ice Cream Pie" on their menu. Sadly, they stopped serving it after their first year in business. It was basically a conglomeration of fudge, chocolate chip cookies and three flavors of ice cream. And it may not have been a "mile high", but it was at least a foot and a half. -But it was a very thin slice. ;)
-
OK...
Laters...
-
Just dropping in and spent so much time catching up that i have to get ready to leave now.
Then I hope something startled her & she is one of the sweet cuddly Torties, that do exist occasionally ;). Heck, she might not have liked the woman's perfume.
Hmmm, is she usually cuddly with people she doesn't know?
What A Magnificent Score..And Those Lyrics....Perfect in every way!
Woody's Comin' !!
TOD:
Can't remember specifically the best pie I ever ate. There was a place near where I used to work that made a pretty mean Chocolate Cream pie.
But my favorite flavor of pie, hands down, is strawberry rhubarb. The combination of tangy sour and sweet can't be beat!!! :)
Sounds a bit like you!
-
I dropped my big announcement at last night's event, and here's the news for everyone who could not be there. I will be working on the Broadway revival of FINIAN'S RAINBOW as the orchestrator for the adjustments being made for the production. I love Rob Berman, the musical director, and I'm very honored to be asked to work on the show. I loved it at Encores!
How exciting! Congratulations to DR elmore!
RE: PINK FISH
Menken is also talented lyric writer too. I wonder why he hasn't done more scores on his own.
I would like to also recommend Daughter of God. I know of only two recordings, Alix Korey: Songs You Might Have Missed (Skip is also on this cd) and Debbie Gravitte on her Menken CD
My pies.
I can't say I ever had the ultimate pie , but I do like Boston Cream Pie (It is the frozen pie section at least at my supermarket) and chocolate pie.
Quote from Matt H. last night:
I saw her, too, on Broadway. She was Pearlie Mae all the way, no Dolly that I could discern. It helped that I had seen the show done legitimately by other actresses. Pearlie just played around with it. Would stop the show and complain about how her feet hurt. Would decide to reprise "So long, Dearie" on a whim.
The audience ate up every second of it, and it WAS entertaining, but it wasn't HELLO, DOLLY!
Matt H., I don't doubt your memory of the Pearl Bailey performance that you saw, because I have read a great many similar accounts over the years. I don't know what could account for the difference, but Ms. Bailey's performance that I saw at the St. James Theatre was all Dolly Levi, and absolutely no Pearlie Mae. She literally lit up the stage and she and Cab Calloway were perfectly cast against each other. The only break in the performance was the eating scene in Harmonia Gardens, but her few off the cuff remarks were far less than I have seen some Dollys do.
I can't explain the difference between the two shows. I don't if it had anything to do with where in the run she was, whether she was tired at the end of the week or fresh at the beginning, or even if it came from doing two-a-day; but she gave an electrifying performance the night I saw the show. And the HELLO DOLLY number literally stopped the show.
And she didn't even know that I was going to be there that night.
Topic of the Day: my most favorite kinds of pies in general are (in no particular order) pecan, blueberry, cherry, coconut cream and chocolate cream...but there are others. Honorable mention does go to Boston cream pies. ;)
My sister (the vegetarian) and my niece (the vegan) go to this local vegan bakery and get this blueberry pie that they just love. Me...not so much. I don't know what they put in it, but it has some flavor in addition to the blueberry that I am just not fond of. :P
Damn! I must be very tired today. I read that over, three times, and each time I read it that Mike was quite nervous. I found that rather silly, since he hadn't even been invited.
My least favorite pie is pumpkin.
I used to have a recipe for a no-bake layered pumpkin pie...you cook the pumpkin on the stove and layer it with a whipped cream mixture. It was the only pumpkin pie that my mom said that she liked. She always make strawberry/rhubarb pie and everyone says that it's very good. I have NEVER liked strawberry/rhubarb pie. :-X
-
T.O.D.
I think my favorite pie would have to be pizza pie. That would be followed closely by pumpkin pie and peanut butter/chocolate pie. Thoses would be followed by blackberry and cherry pie. I like most types of pies, except for apple pie and mincemeat.
Best pie: My mom's pumpkin pie
Has anyone noticed the influx of commercials featuring untalented children? I keep getting commercials with kids playing soldiers, kids selling ice cream, with a dreadful pageant, and there's not a shred of talent between the little buggers! They scream or speak motonously and should all be terminated ASAP. God, they are inept.
I talked to my friend Gretchen today. I told her that I thought I should drive up there to see if the mentos geyser went higher with diet coke than it did with the cheap diet soda we used before. She giggled and said she thinks that's exactly what we should do and she couldn't think of better entertainment on Sunday. So I need to head out and see if I can find a lot of Mentos.
Steve was feeling a little better today and was able to go to his office where he's starting to work on getting things in order to be able to leave it.
-
Will there be photos of the geyser?
-
You know, we had some last time, I'm not sure what happened to them. Maybe my mom took them on her regular camera and hasn't had them developed yet. Yes, we can take photos - maybe even a video! I'm planning on going all out so we can really play with it.
Actually nothing can be as funny as our first attempt. We all thought it was going to be this giant explosion of some sort. We cleared the area, made everyone stand back. Made sure no cars were coming down the road and it went about 4 feet high and stopped. We laughed so hard.
Next week we're spending four days down on the Oregon coast. We've rented a little house near the beach. I think it's going to be a wonderful place to relax a bit and spend some time with my boys.
Laura - Toby will be 1 year on September 6th! I can hardly believe a year has gone by so quickly. We'll be going over to Jed's mother's house for a birthday dinner, but I don't do huge birthday parties for little babies...they won't remember anything anyway.
-
Oh and Laura, I've been meaning to tell you. Toby has decided that the dinosaur is THE toy to have in the car seat. It lives in the backseat, and Toby insists on having it in his lap while we travel. It's quite cute.
I just broke down and added HBO to my cable. I was thinking it was too expensive and was about to say no until the customer service rep said, well you can always cancel after a few days, it would only be 56 cents a day. Sheesh, that sold me. So, now I can see "Which Way Home" and "Grey Gardens" Cool
Such is the nature of live theater as you and I both know. I saw her AFTER she won the Tony and was the toast of the town. I got the feeling she thought she WAS the whole show and could do what she wanted. It was, as I recall, the Saturday evening performance.
A Song Like That: Collaborators Reconsider Spanish Lyrics in West Side Story (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/132241-A_Song_Like_That_Collaborators_Reconsider_Spanish_Lyrics_in_West_Side_Story)
Jose, about how many people show up for a CD signing like the cast of WEST SIDE STORY did? Do you have to show up hours ahead of time?
From what I understand, they had a pretty good turnout for the West Side Story revival CD signing. Not in the 1000's, but at least in the low-100's. Since most CD signings take place at the Lincoln Square Barnes & Nobles (now that the Times Square Virgin Megastore is closed), the size of the room helps to control the crowds since there's only so much room to sit and wait.
You don't really have to get there early, but if the signing takes place on a show night, then it's just a matter of getting in line before the cast has to leave.
Finally back from a long, exhausting day. I had lunch with Kevin Spirtas (just a lettuce wedge), and that was grand fun. I'm sure elmore will be happy to know that Mr. Spirtas will be a credited above the line producer on Finian's - he brought quite a bit of investor money to the show. Then I had a four-hour work session with Crista and Alex. I had her do the Band-Aid version of her "act" and while she was doing it I figured out where all the new material would fit. Afterwards, we sang the show in the order I came up with and it was great - just had to move one little thing. We still have a lot to do and I'll begin putting it together today - some staging, how to get from one thing to the next - the only thing we won't be doing is creating new patter and fixing old patter. I'll give her the ideas, but then I'll actually write it in her voice, and then she can make it her own. After that, I had to hurry to see Skip's show, about which more in the notes. Then I had to hurry to Joe Allen to sup with Walter Willison. We had quite a nice time, but I really started to fade after a couple of hours. As we were leaving, he saw two people at the bar that he knew, so I met them and we ended up chatting with them for another fifteen minutes - I'm sure the denizens of this here site know them well, since they both appear on One Life To Live (and the girl also appeared for years on Days Of Our Lives). I think the gal's name was Farrah Fath, and the guy plays her boyfriend - John something (a P, I think). Very nice indeed. And now I'm home, I've responded to many of the fifty or so e-mails waiting for me, and I guess I'll go write the notes now.
