I do not know nearly enough Legrand.

I've never seen it, either.
And the word of the day is: SYNDIC!
Richard and I had a lovely time last night at Music Hall. Our seats were in the 6 row of the balcony, which is great, but they were not as centered as I'd have liked. We could still see very well, except the action that took place downstage left. We had to crane our necks a bit to see Porgy's domicile. And, yes, DR Elmore's friend David Abell was the conductor and the orchestra sounded great. When I lived in Sarasota, Fla., the number of people who got up and left the opera at 11 p.m., regardless of how much time was left in the production, was appalling, too. Their morning tee times at the golf course were more important, which led me to wonder: Why did they bother going to the opera in the first place?
The production was very well done and I'm glad to have seen it, but I don't think I'll go out of my way to see a full-length PORGY & BESS again. The synopsis in the program was written in 3 acts, but there was only one intermission that occurred in the middle of the Act 2 paragraph. The show kind of dragged after intermission. And I was appalled at the droves of people who left as soon as it ended, not even bothering to stay for the curtain call. Of course, their exodus blocked the view for those of us who had the manners to stay and show our appreciation to the company.
As much as I love the piece, you remind me that sitting through the complete opera makes for a VERY long afternoon or evening. Too bad about the single intermission break. I wonder if they did that to manage overtime.
I do envy you hearing that MAGNIFICENT orchestration in one of the best halls in the country! :)

DR Elmore, I knew you'd have a recording to recommend! Amazon shows several from HGO - can you post a picture of the one I should get?
Today is Frank Loesser's birthday. Yesterday was Richard Rodgers'.
Thank you, TCB, for stepping up to the plate. As it were.
One question:
What do we do if we don't know "Beat Me Daddy Eight to the Bar"?

I grew up with the Price / Warfield version, so it remains my favorite.

Interesting! Amazon.com list Leotyne Price as the conductor?Leontyne Price (Conductor)
Oh, and sorry, I forgot that this was not a complete version, just highlights.
How good was the Cleveland Orchestra PORGY? I remember being thrilled when it came out because it was the first complete recording, but don't recall anything about how it sounded or what they did with it. I'm guessing it ranks well below the Houston. Any other worthy ones out there?

Sorry, Ron, you had to see the word someday.
I have yet to hear any PORGY AND BESS recording that nears the Houston Grand Opera set.
I don't even plan on buying the CD of what's currently playing on B'way.
What a shock!
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing!
I do not know nearly enough Legrand.

I guess the time limit on the contract expired.

Good luck to DR DANISE.

elmore, I just saw it - I actually forgot it was going up today, and then I got an e-mail from Cary Mansfield at Varese, who'd read it and sent me the link.
Album Produced By just got an incredibly generous and loving review from The Second Disc: http://theseconddisc.com/2012/06/29/review-album-produced-by-more-of-my-roller-coaster-life-by-bruce-kimmel/

Interesting...Nicole had 10 years before her contract expired.

Well, I just heard Prologue/Beautiful Girls in our new mix - I could not believe what I heard - the clarity and detail is amazing, the vocals pop now, orchestral details that were buried are suddenly there, and the whole thing sounds smooth as silk compared to the original hastily-mixed version, where things just popped out in unseemly ways and vocals were occasionally behind the band instead of in front - I think this is going to be something incredible.

That's number three for Tom-Boy....Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and now Katie.
Wonder what it is about Tom-Boy?
Do you think he has a new squeeze?
Should Oprah do a special and invite Tom-Boy to jump all over her furniture?

And they said it wouldn't last. They were right again.
The 5:00 news coverage over the Holmes-Cruise mess was so fawning and ridiculous that I had to change stations before I vomited on the floor.
Is it as spectacular as this?

Relax. I've read at one site that this divorce took Tom-Boy by surprise. He didn't see it coming. Katie filed for "irreconcilable differences".
Here's a thought -- perhaps some day BK could unlock a few threads and let people go in and edit their posts -- removing the photos.
Updated 5:00 p.m.: According to a TMZ (http://www.tmz.com/2012/06/29/katie-holmes-scientology-tom-cruise-divorce-suri/) report, Tom Cruise’s involvement in the Church of Scientology is what ultimately led to Katie Holmes’ decision to divorce the actor.
The article claims Holmes has had growing concerns about daughter Suri’s involvement in the church now that she is nearing the age where children are introduced to the religion.
This point of contention is reportedly leading to the already “nasty” divorce details, which include Katie’s request for sole custody. In short, she doesn’t want Tom controlling Suri’s choice of religion.
Hmmm....going out to dinner tonight (it is payday, after all) with my buddy Jim...can't decide what we want or where we want to go.
I do want a chocolate dessert for sure, however.

Who gets custody of the turkey baster?
I do feel for all of you who are in the heat this week...
...it has hovered around 65 to 70 here in Salem, Oregon, USA all week...with the occasional rain, sprinkles, and/or showers mixed in. Very pleasant.

Funny!!
We had a doozy of a storm blow through here about 4:30pm. We're fine, but trees and power lines are down in communities all around and there are lots of power outages.

THE NEXT FOOD NETWORK STAR spoilers from last Sunday's Episode
This is for DR Cillaliz.
I just double checked and the episode we had yesterday was the same one that you guys had last Sunday.
There were 9 people left.
I was very disappointed with who left. She was probably my 2nd favorite. I do totally agree with them that she wouldn't be ready to do her show now. But i don't think any of them would be able to do it. I just found her genuine and charming. And was definitely not happy at all. My favorite is Justin. I just love him. Some of the others really struggle to me on personality. And i was really annoyed that they took the lowest from each team (that after saying that teams wouldn't really matter anymore). I really wanted Ippy (sp?) to be in the bottom. He is sweet. But there is zero chance he should win IMO. That one guy did really open up (I thought he would be on the top). Never cared for him before. So i guess people can improve. But really for the most part - I don't see anyone on Bobby's team being someone i would want to really watch.
Wow, lots of fireworks and fire crackers already tonight. They canceled all fireworks today because of the drought here. That said, there were thunderstorms possible over the next day. Go figure.
In their great wisdom, our legislature made fireworks legal. In the desert. In the summer. What? Do they want to be Colorado II?
Off to camp. We'll finish the vocal's for Act One today, and start briefly on Act Two. Monday and Tuesday next week, I'm with the little kids camp - we're doing Dear Edwina Jr which I'm very excited about. Anyhow, we have callbacks and casting on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday is a holiday. Then my day will be split in half bigger kids in the morning little-er kids in the afternoon. I'm happy to have at least 2/3 of Aida taught by the end of week one.
And these are the days of our lives.

Last year's Wallow Fire burned 538,049 acres. We are definitely not copying anyone. We lead the way!
