Great rant, BK, that could be extrapolated into truths that lie far beyond the Broadway stage, and even far beyond the world of entertainment.

In Psych 101, you learn about GROUPTHINK, the potential dangers when a group of people approach a problem. "Too Many Cooks" is another name for it. These Broadway shows lose their momentum and move away from their very reason for being due to overthinking and too much noise in the system. The creative arts suffer because they've surrendered the idea of a singular vision and given in to the tools of marketing and second-guessing.

Not to appear too ignorant (but I guess I am!) but what are buttons? We use buttons sometimes on the end of promos---it's just a short little line or quip after the end logo. On a musical CD, is it a reprise of some sort?

Personally, I found Rises Again to be a disappointment after Abominable.  However, it's worth seeing if simply to set you up for the much more delightful charms of a third film of similar premise, Theater of Blood, which pairs Price with the appealing Diana Rigg.

I think THEATRE OF BLOOD is much better than PHIBES. Although similar in the themed killings and the female assistant, Price's character is better drawn. I don't think one needs to see either PHIBES movie to enjoy THEATRE OF BLOOD.

As for headset mics, all I can say is, yuck. I remember going to a show once, and there was a brief preview for the CIVIL WAR musical, and all these soldiers had their headsets on. No, that wasn't distracting, didn't take me out of the piece at all

I may surprise you on "The Brain!"

I've had a profitable morning in the library; I copied out a bass part for a turkey I arranged called "Christmas In Manhattan," and I  tracked down some song books to make lead sheets on three of the four military songs I need for underscoring in "The Brain."  I couldn't find "Anchors Away," because - I think - it may still be uinder copyright.  A Google search may turn up something!

The "button," DR edi, is the final note or chord that tells everyone the number has ended.  They can be subtle or quite unsubtle depending on the tone of the material preceding it or the tastes of everyone involved.  BK and I know one performer who thinks he's Judy Garland and wants a BIG BUTTON on everything he sings.

Happily, I have worked with elmore since 1993 and he has never resorted to those kinds of cheap, sleazy orchestration tricks.  And no one loves buttons more than I, and other CD producers now regularly emulate what I do on big buttons on CDs (not that they'd admit it), and basically musicals do to - since they didn't pre-1993 (when I began doing recordings), I'd like to think they ran with my little idea.  They just ran too far and, as always, too much.  It's okay to do it on one or two numbers, but when you do it on ALL the numbers, it just becomes crass.

A button beats a fade out ANYDAY in my book....and I insist on them with a physical move to match the musical button - the audience always knows when the song is over!  It helps believe me.  The worst R/H offender IMHO is CAROUSEL...it is really hard to tell when the song ends....unless you REALLY REALLY KNOW.

If course NOTHING is a bad as ballet, when the soloists take bows in the MIDDLE of scenes and sections.  But when they bow, at least you know their part is over!

Our theatre has 195 seats, five rows - thrust stage...not one chair is 40 feet away from Center Stage....and yet there are people who will NOT speak up and be heard.
