Title: THE CATCHER IN THE WRY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were wry and catching, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're catching some wry right now.

No, we will never get to Page 2.

I agree -  we should NOT progress to page two until the notes are fixed! We have Part ONE repeated twice, and no Part TWO. Absent Part TWo we have no topic for the day, and that leaves us all speechless!

Yesterday, I received a DVR/DVD burner that I got through eBay.  Last night, I recorded "Battlestar Galactica" on my Comcast DVR, and then I watched it as I recorded it to my new (to me) DVR/DVD burner.  It has a 100 GB hard drive, so I was able to cut out the commercials and make a DVD!  It all worked! :D It is a bit cumbersome to go through all the steps and menus, but as long as it works, I'm not too concerned.

I'm in the midst of laundry. Both in the basement and down the street at my local laundromat.

DR Jose, when you get out of bed or get home, call me about the movie.

Today, I need to write about Harlequinades and other aspects of 19th Century British pantomime.  I got to get a move on Duke Ellington as well.

Everything is now in dryers and I Steri-Fabbed the mattress and box springs to keep Bug Central secure.  I have yet to mop the bathroom and I'm waiting till the apartment seems ventilated enough that all the chemicals won't kill me.

I ended up liking much of the new MANSFIELD PARK. Like the one from the 1990s with Jonny Lee Miller and Frances O'Connor, the plot is heavily condensed but the tone is wrong. Both versions telegraph too much about the sexual aspects of the story and Maria Bertram's adultery far too early and blatantly. The Crawford's also speak far too openly about their evil aspirations. I suppose I'm glad the writers didn't explore what seems to me an oblique incestuous relationship in the novel; they're a rather perverse set of siblings.  I like the cast of the 1997 version better - it's certainly more glamorous - but there are some excellent performances in this one.  I liked very much Douglas Hodge and Jemma Redgrave as Sir Thomas and Lady Bertram, although she's not the whining fool that she is in the novel, but he's really spot on.

Like the last PRIDE AND PREJUDICE with Kiera Knightly, I wish they'd given us 30-45 minutes more to smooth out things and give Mrs Norris, who's right up there with Dickens' Murdstones for evil and inhumane behavior to our heroine, a chance to step into the foreground again and do petty, mean things. If only Alison Hayes had lived to play such a role!

Neither is a Blu-ray release. Fans of the films are clamoring for the movies in Blu-ray, but so far nothing has been announced from Columbia/Sony.

I already have both on sDVD, and while they should both make great viewing in high definition, I wouldn't be in a hurry to add either Blu-ray to my collection. I'd probably wait around for a sale.

BK's topic:

When I was young, there was a creek a couple of blocks from my house that wound its way through the neighborhood and town for miles. All around it was dense foliage with hanging vines that could easily support our weight. We (brother and neighborhood friends) spent many a Saturday morning and afternoon wandering the creek's path and swinging across it on those vines, pretending to be Tarzan (the movies of which conveniently came on every Sunday afternoon and which occupied years of my time).

Sometimes we'd even pack a lunch of sodas and sandwiches and spend literally all day at that creek. How wonderful and carefree those days were then!

As for todays topic, I suppose it was the huge field behind our house, which was the remaining section of Old Man Lopane's farm before most of it became a new housing subdivision around 1948, when my dad started building our house on the new Goldman Avenue.  About half a mile back through the weeds, corn, whatever Mr Lopane was growing that year, were abandoned and falling down outhouses like small barns - most likely for chickens and other livestock - which were great places to hide out and pretend. I have no idea where on the original property his main barn was located or what other buildings were originally in that field.  it was quite large.

When I'd walk home from junior high, I'd come down through the field and i was like taking a walk with DR Laura: both spring and autumn there were wild flowers, beautiful butterflies, grasshoppers and praying mantises wherever you'd look. and at night hundreds of fireflies, moths, junebugs, and bats circling the streetlamps to catch them.  Around 1963 or so, the property was sold and a new subdivision begun. By 1970 most of the field had been eaten away by houses and new streets.  By 1975, whatever flora and fauna filled the area were completely gone.

TOD:

Once again, BK's topic has taken me back through the internet to find wonderful remembrances of something from my childhood.  We lived not far from

The Ford Rotunda (http://automotivemileposts.com/autobrevity/fordrotunda.html)

and would go there to see the Christmas display.  One of the things I remember best is the display of

Goodfellow Dolls (http://wycd.com/pages/804158.php?)

What I didn't realize until this morning is that the day the Rotunda reopened after its post-WWII remodeling, June 16, 1953, was the day my family moved from Portland, Oregon (where I was born) to Detroit (where I grew up).  I remember vividly how sad it was the day the building burned.

As for The Topic of the Day...

Well, since we moved around almost every year and a half to two years, well...

However, I do remember when we lived in Gales Ferry, CT - when my dad was stationed at the Coast Guard Academy/Base in New London, CT - there was a big rock somewhere along the paths in our "backyard".  At times it was it a fort, other times a castle, and sometimes it was just a sittin' rock.

Magical Places?

When I was young, my family spent our summers in Soap Lake, a small town in central Washington State.  The waters in the lake are suppose to cure a variety of ailments.

Although I didn't feel that way at the time, my wamest childhood memories are centered on Soap Lake and some of the people that I knew there.

In fact, Soap Lake and its people provided the background for my first novel, NOBODY DROWNS IN MINERAL LAKE (1999. The Center Press).

If you're interested, it's still in print and available through Amazon.com.

Good morning, everyone!

Spring in Tacoma didn't merely arrive, it exploded. Yesterday was a lovely day with temperatures in the 60s.  But today, the temperature is supposed to reach 70,  the skies are a beautiful shade of blue, and it looks like thousands of people are heading down the street to Point Defiance Park, which is one block from my house.

I am trying to remember (after only one cup of coffee) what event may be taking place in the Park.  The Daffodil Parade is in downtown, the Spring Fair is out in Puyallup; so, possibly, the crowd is for the Bluegrass Festival?

Uh....TCB, you invited them all over for breakfast, remember?

Bad news:  that means I have to do yardwork.

The movie on my agenda for today is Lifetime's adaptation of Kim Edwards' book The Memory Keeper's Daughter (http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/movies/memory-keepers-daughter?CMP=RAC-MKDNYT).  My book group read it last year and we're all interested to see this version.

Having read the book I really don't feel like revisiting the story.  Please let me know what you think of the movie.

bk, I checked, and The Sondheim Review's email distribution list is "protected," so there's no way to do an email blast about Primrose unless they instigate it themselves.

They did it in August '06 for an event at Ravinia, so there is precedent.  And a CD release that everyone can participate in is far more worthy of being announced, methinks.

I grew up in Florida, so of course there was Disney World.

But let me tell you about the most magical place of all.

It was the 7-11 near my house.

What, you ask, was so great about that?

Well, I'll tell you.

Every week came the arrival of fresh Archie comic books.

Archie, Laugh, PEP, Archie's Pals 'n' Gals, Jughead, Reggie and Me, Betty & Veronica, and on and on. Twenty cents each, and I'm here to tell you, I've never had a bigger thrill in my life than going there and checking out all the new titles, taking them home and losing myself in their carefree teenage adventures.

I shan't have an experience like that ever again.

But I can come close: Now that I'm in my 40s, I can go online and buy Archie comics on eBay cheap and totally relive my childhood.

Is that pathetic?

I have to say the most magical place I went to as a child was Disneyland.

Another magical place for me was the home of my father’s good friend Joe.  Joe and his wife, an Olympic diving champion (at least competitor, but I think she was a champion) lived in a mansion.  The house was large and beautiful, however it was the pool and yard that were magical.  Their pool was so large it even had steps to sit on in the deep end.  Of course they had a high diving board.  Behind the pool was a park, at least it seemed the size of a small park, with a double glider swing & gardens and a wooded area to play in.

Joe was a one of kind, bigger than life person who liked to have major family parties with loads of food & fun.   On the 4th his fireworks were terrific.  There were always plenty of children to play with.

It was his wife who spent hours & hours patiently teaching me to dive. Patience was required as she had much harm to undo after a guest decided to teach me how to dive from the high board.  I was fearless as he held me upside down and dropped me into the water.  The fear began after I belly flopped & had my breath knocked out of me.  I know I was unconscious my rescue.  My stomach hurt the rest of the day.

These were wonderful people and the magic all ended when Joe suddenly died of a heart attack.  The last time I went to the magical mansion was with my mother to make a condolence call.

I often think of these wonderful generous people & wonder where their children are today.

I also loved ARCHIE Comics when I was a kid.  Of course, they only cost a dime when I bought them.

So did I, and I also loved the DC comics (SUPERMAN and all the others featuring him and his pals, BATMAN, etc.)

I remember how stunned we were to go into the dime store one Saturday and there were the new month's editions only they were priced at 12 cents!

Then and there, I got my mother to help me to subscribe to all my favorites so I could get them at a reduced rate and delivered right to my door.

I began by finshing up the two-part episode of THE CLOSER from the Season 2 set. Always loved that outcome and Brenda getting back in the murder room with her squad intact.

I went back and rewatched another CLOSER episode on the same disc, the one with the prisoner trying to get out of jail based on a kid's eyewitness account of the real murderer. Always loved this episode, too, especially when Estelle Pope comes charging into the murder room hurling invective at Brenda.

Next, I watched another MR. WONG film. The title of it escapes me, but it was the last one made by Karloff. The always wonderful Henry Brandon played a lawyer in the film, and I was also very pleased that I guessed the identity of the murderer in this one, too, though I had a partially wrong motive.

Next, I watched THE RED BALLOON. It's only 34 minutes long, but it's a completely charming, whimsical little French trifle. It's obviously packaged by Criterion, but they're not taking credit for it. It's released under the Janus Film label. Gorgeous Technicolor transfer in Academy ratio. Oddly, the trailer is in anamorphic widescreen showing that the film could have been soft matted and anamorphically enhanced for a widescreen DVD release. I'm not sure which I would have preferred. I suspect if it had been anamorphic, there wouldn't have been that slight bit of line twitter when the child would pass by certain wrought iron fences. Most of the line structures on steps, bricks, etc. are solid as can be.

Amazingly, this won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay of 1956 (over such weightier contenders as LA STRADA, THE BOLD AND THE BRAVE, and THE LADYKILLERS).

I ended my afternoon watching BATMAN BEGINS upconverted in anticipation of the upcoming Blu-ray release of this film this summer. I really cannot wait to see this in true high definition. I've been tempted to get it on HD-DVD, but I'm holding off for the Blu-ray since allegedly there are to be additional special features combined with what was on the previous HD release.

My mother gave me a welcome mat a few years ago. It says

If you ever want to see these people again, bring 5 pounds of tuna in a brown paper sack. Signed The cat

I never dreamed it would come true.  I have the mat in my garage and laugh every time I'm coming home from a tuna run

I must get that welcome mat!

bk, I checked, and The Sondheim Review's email distribution list is "protected," so there's no way to do an email blast about Primrose unless they instigate it themselves.

They did it in August '06 for an event at Ravinia, so there is precedent.  And a CD release that everyone can participate in is far more worthy of being announced, methinks.

Maybe if you dropped them a line - I wrote them, they wrote back, I sent them a much abbreviated version of the press release, but as far as I can tell, have never sent it.  Maybe if you explained to them why they should run it they'd see the light.

I'm back from RUN FAT BOY RUN, which is a very funny feel-good movie with a wonderful  cast and some silly outrageous situations.  I had quite a celebrity day waiting for DR Jose to show up.  When I got to the theatre, my longtime Drama Book Shop friend Conan McCarty was waiting for his girlfriend.  I was both happy and surprised to see him since I thought he'd relocated for THE CLOSER, in which he appears as the ass Det. Ross.  He said he's in this season but they haven't started shoting anything with him. He also said he wouldn't relocate but just goes out to LA or the work.  He was waiting for his lady friend and they were seeing LEATHERHEADS. While we were talking, Mia Dillon of the original Broadway cast of CRIMES OF THE HEART and her husband Kier Dullea came out of the theatre and joined us. They had been to see THE VISITOR, which they loved.

We chatted and Conan's lady friend arrived and we all went our separate ways.  About 5 minutes later, DR Jose showed up and missed all of this.

After the movie, we walked abit up Amsterdam Avenue and DR Jose headed to Fairway. I walked on home and here I am.

Well, I'm at work, but I'm not really working, so I'm going to leave (and adjust my timesheet appropriately).  In about an hour and a half, I need to be at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/) to work concessions for Fansipan - A piano concert with Dang Thai Son (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/calendar/calendar_detail.asp?event_id=965).  Here's Dang Thai Son's bio:

Dang Thai Son was the first Asian to be awarded the First Prize and Gold Medal at the 10th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Poland. Since then, his career has spanned over forty countries. He has performed with an exhaustive list of world-class orchestras at many prestigious venues. Dang Thai Son is frequently invited to give master classes around the world and has sat as member of the jury on prominent piano competitions.

Should be a good concert (if instrumental music didn't usually bore me ::))

He's really a sweetheart, but I hardly know him. Mia worked with the New Amsterdam Theatre Company with me around 1983-84. I haven't seen her in years except on a LAW & ORDER SVU episode based on the JT Leroy fraud. He and Mia, on their way uptown, found a hat and were asking folk in front of the theatre if it were theirs or if they wanted it.  I told them I already was wearing one but they tried to convince me I needed another.

Orders have slowed up, of course, but are still trickling in, which is good.  If the damn Sondheim Review people would simply send the e-mail, we'd probably sell out instantly.  If we sell out before the magazine comes out with its review, I can't imagine any of its subscribers would be happy that they could have had knowledge of this and didn't.  In fact, I'd say they'd lose subscribers over it.

Good Evening!

As DR elmore already mentioned, we both thought "Run Fatboy Run" to be quite a charming movie.  It's not a spoof/tribute like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz" were, but it is very much in the vein of the classic "the underdog becomes an over-dog" movies.

*And it was nice to see that Hank Azaria has been working out lately.  ;)

Oh, I'm sure if you just add an Accordian/Harmonica player Elmore could craft some imaginative orchestrations; or -

Use pre-recorded music - Susan Stroman did it!

Have the cast play their own damn instruments - Doyle did it!

And if you have the cast just hum instead of sing, you can cut down on rehearsal time - Puccini did it!

I just spent an interesting(?) hour or two browsing some of the contents of ebay.  Mostly I was looking thru the Broadway and celebrity autograph sections.  There used to be one of their ebay speciality shops called Broadway, but I'll be damned if I can figure out how to get to it now.

I was amazed at some of the crap that they are currently selling.  I did find Paris Hilton's napkin from Prague with an opening bid of $10.00.  There was a whole slew of Playbills going for up to $5.00 a piece for shows that are still running and not even autographed.  One individual had listings for, I think, eight posters for different musicals signed by the cast, with each one selling for a starting bid of $35.00.  That sounded okay until you read the description and found out that they were signed by the cast of the touring company that happened to come thru Tennessee.  Not that there is anything wrong with a touring company, but $35.00 for a group of signatures of people whose signatures you can't even read or recognize?

Orders have slowed up, of course, but are still trickling in, which is good.  If the damn Sondheim Review people would simply send the e-mail, we'd probably sell out instantly.  If we sell out before the magazine comes out with its review, I can't imagine any of its subscribers would be happy that they could have had knowledge of this and didn't.  In fact, I'd say they'd lose subscribers over it.

bk - The press release was already posted on the Sondheim listserv - and could probably be posted there again.  Most, if not all, of the listserv members are subscribers to "The Sondheim Review", and I'm sure the word is getting around.

When we first met about the show we discussed the band.  Initially they said they were thinking just piano and I said that wouldn't work.  I then agreed to donate my salary for the reed and second keyboard and they said they'd go to their board and ask them to match my offer with the bass and drums.  And that's what I assumed was going to happen.  Apparently their board said no.  But, I didn't know this until yesterday - if I'd known it weeks and weeks ago I might have been able to do something about it - but with under three weeks left I'm at a loss.  The head guy is supposed to call me in the next couple of days to discuss - he's in Vietnam right now visiting his family, but will make the time to chat about it.  I'm concerned on any number of levels, not least of which is that I don't think our musical director can play all the reed and synth lines that he'd need to cover if it's just a trio - he's got his hands full just trying to play his piano part.

Moses was high on drugs (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=080304120710.ad7gm7i6&show_article=1)

Quote
High on Mount Sinai, Moses was on psychedelic drugs when he heard God deliver the Ten Commandments, an Israeli researcher claimed in a study published this week.
Such mind-altering substances formed an integral part of the religious rites of Israelites in biblical times, Benny Shanon, a professor of cognitive psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem wrote in the Time and Mind journal of philosophy.

"As far Moses on Mount Sinai is concerned, it was either a supernatural cosmic event, which I don't believe, or a legend, which I don't believe either, or finally, and this is very probable, an event that joined Moses and the people of Israel under the effect of narcotics," Shanon told Israeli public radio on Tuesday.

Moses was probably also on drugs when he saw the "burning bush," suggested Shanon, who said he himself has dabbled with such substances.

I have been watching BROADWAY: THE MUSICAL on Netflix online.  I had never gotten around to seeing it before.  I am enjoying it a great deal.  I just finished Part 5, about the changes from the tradional musical to the new modern musical, such as A CHORUS LINE or COMPANY.  One thing I found so strange was in the footage of the recording of the original Braodway cast of COMPANY.  And of the actors standing next to Elaine Stritch during the recording is actually smoking a cigarette.

Boy, have times changed.  We used to smoke onstage, backstage, at work, in the movie theaters.  Things have certainly changed.  Now, at least in Washington State, about the only place you can smoke besides your house and your car, is in the Indian casinos - because they are a sovereign nation and do not have to follow state laws.

Of the new BBC Jane Austen's I think NORTHANGER ABBEY is the best of the lot. It's very funny, which the book is, and the heroine Catherine Morland, like Voltaire's Candide one of the great idiots of literature, does not come off as the nincompoop she is in the book and that's a good thing.

*And it was nice to see that Hank Azaria has been working out lately.  ;)

Lately?

He's had that rockin' body for quite a few years now. Even though I know he has it, it always rocks my world every time I see him in a production and he takes off his shirt for some reason.

Tonight, I watched FRACTURE on HBO-HD. This was the mystery/courtroom/cat and mouse drama with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling. I didn't see it in theaters, nor did I see the DVD, so this was my first experience with it. I enjoyed the back and forth between the two men, but I have to confess that I did guess the central surprise of the film long before the cell phones gave it away. Still, it was a satisfying face off between these two fine actors.

Anthony Hopkins has really started to look his age, however. I guess we all give way to the ravages of time eventually.

When I was growing up one of my favorite places to go and sit and watch the world go by... It was an big old rock below an apple tree. Grab an apple and lay on the rock contemplating different things and imagine imaginary beasts in the puffy white clouds.

Another place I liked was an old restauarant that was in the town near my grandparents and you could sit outside on the benches with an ice cream cone...

The closest to that experience I can to that memory was when I was at Judds' store in St. George Utah.

Had to laugh this past week in class

The guest lecturer was warbling on about bell curves and she made an example using  beta tapes and she asked why they were not adopted. Both me and another classmate commented that it was the expense of beta tapes and the porn industry....

I wish I had a camera for the face she gave at the porn industry comment. She thought we were joking and the other person who said it pulled up an article that was posted here a while back.

It was classic... She did not believe me initially...

Iowa...

Speaking of which -

We've all read about the effect of $6 corn on the cost of other food stuffs (the current corn shortage exacerbated by the Federal requirement for added corn based bio fuels). Beef, dairy products, chickens, candy, cereals, etc). (Did you know that most of out food "citric acid" is a corn product?)

Well, expect things to get worse - our farmers are actually planting LESS corn this year than last (estimates are about 8% nationwide). Seems that even at $6/bushel, corn is a less profitable crop than soy beans. (Soy seed cost less, requires less fertilizer, and requires less irrigation - which is pricey because of rising fuel costs for the pumps.) Our DelMarVa penninsula used to be major corn exporter - no more. Now we have to import tons of the stuff to feed out broiler chickens. (Our county produces more broiler chickens than any other in the whole of the USA!)

Well, at least the IOWA farmers will be happy (until they go to the supermarket).

Actually, people here are planting more corn and are seeking to take land out of CRP (conservation reserve program) acres so they can plant it in corn.  There are stories in papers and on the radio by environmentalists encouraging them not to do it.

And yes, we're paying more for everything at the grocery store

There is actually a huge concern in South Dakota about the loss of CRP acres to corn.  It could devastate their pheasant hunting season. (that wouldn't make me cry) but apparently pheasant hunting brings tons of $$ to South Dakota and the loss of CRP land means loss of habitat for pheasants

I have been cranking out reviews all day.  First up was the superb My Boy Jack, about Rudyard Kipling and his son, starring David Haig and Daniel Radcliffe.  Then I went to Bollywood for Saawariya, which is big and colorful, if largely empty from a plot standpoint.  And then there was the really good The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, based on one of only two novels of the youngest Bronte sister, Anne.

Many thanks to all who offered vibes and good wishes for my mom's health and mine.  My mom is quite well and relieved that she didn't have a heart attack. She knows, of course, that this A-fibrillation is just one more thing she must attend to.  She's lived longer than her parents and grandparents and she's healthy as a horse,  otherwise.  And, for me, I've inherited the genetic combo of her hypertension and my dad's propensity for prostate cancer.  I'm treating one and doing annual checks for the other.  And I reckon I might have A-fibrillation to look forward to.

Sigh.

I haven't yet had an uncomfortable moment "post-op", and I put in quite a busy day, shopping for four hours this morning, and then napping three hours this afternoon.  I've also managed to watch/clear a number of last week's TV shows from my DVR cache including "Eli Stone"and "Ghost Whisperer" both of which had excellent stories this week.

I've just finished watching "Lifeforce" on Universal HD TV.  Still a fascinating film to watch in spite of/because of its flaws.

Huge Oil Reservoir May Lie Under Northern Plains

BISMARCK, N.D. —  The government estimates up to 4.3 billion barrels of oil can be recovered from the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota and Montana, using current technology.

The U.S. Geological Survey calls it the largest continuous oil accumulation it has ever assessed.

An assessment by USGS in 1999 found the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge had 10.3 billion barrels of recoverable oil, said Brenda Pierce, a geologist for the agency

The Bakken Formation encompasses some 25,000 square miles in North Dakota, Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

About two-thirds of the acreage is in western North Dakota, where the oil is trapped in a thin layer of dense rock nearly two miles beneath the surface.

Companies use pressurized fluid and sand to break pores in the rock and prop them open to recover the oil.
