When I was in junior high school -- 8th and 9th grades -- a locally produced TV show, sponsored by Furman University and starring, I think, one of the university's speech teachers, was mandatory viewing twice a week in class.
It was called "How Do You Say It". The teacher had a (more) drawn-out (than usual) drawl, and she would intone of the handpicked kids on her show, "How do you SAY it?"
And the kids would intone: "How do you say WHAT"?
And the teacher would then choose one of many words regionally mispronounced on which to dwell.
It was all too much for most of us.
