Well, you've read the notes, you rest your case, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently resting their collective cases and sitting on their collective ASSES!

Topic of the Day:

In my DVD player:  Kevin Spirtas' DVD, "Night and Days."  Kevin gives such a fun performance!  I brought it to work yesterday to show my co-worker Ruth (she loved the CD that she borrowed from me) and she told me that she received her very own copy just the day before, also!  She didn't know about the audio commentary and I told her that she MUST listen to it...and that BK is the King of DVD commentaries! ;D After that will be "The Alien Conspiracy: Grey Skies" that I got from Netflix.com.  It features our very own Rodzinski!!  (And I think he may have even written part of it...is that correct?)

In my CD player at work:  my brand new copy of the original cast recording of A New Brain.  After that, I don't know.  I boxed up ALL of my CDs and put them in storage.  I have to continue to clean my house (I'm taking way too much time and my sister is getting antsy ::)).

In my VCR:  nothing.  I forgot to check tvguide.com to see if there was anything that I wanted to tape tonight.  I do have a couple of tapes from a few weeks ago and I have no idea what's on them, so there will be a bit of a surprise. :)

And on the condo front, it looks like I've gotten a couple of preliminary pre-approval offers from mortgage lenders!!  I don't know what the "official" chain of events is supposed to be, but I'll find out soon enough.  Wish me luck!

Good morning, all!  The last Frdau in August.  Summer is almost over, and I feel it was here for no time at all.  My allergies were kicking in, so I guess hay fever is around the corner.  I needed some Nyquil to help me sleep and I ended up sleeping too long.  So now I have to plan my day:  laundry, library, and the charts for Klea Blackhurst.

TOD:

DVD player:

Night and Days.  Der Brucer really enjoyed it; I found Mr. Spirtas' delivery of the material to be too much at the same level, and wished he'd had a few quieter numbers.  Horseracing.

I tried once again to watch the movie of the musical The Producers, but I cannot get past that first office scene.  Broderick is too forced and lacks spontaneity, and Lane isn't much better.  I found myself wanting to watch the original film instead.

CD player:

Sunday in the Park with George, London cast.  I'm really enjoying it.

By Request, Wendy Carlos.  A trip down memory lane.

Book:

The Food of France, Waverly Root.  Heavy with history, this one.  It's going to take me a while to get through it, but it is a classic and will be worth my time.

It was surprisingly cool when I got up and went out to get the newspaper, but within an hour, the cool had vanished and it was back to warm. The joys of a Southern summer.

DR Donna, I am a HUGE fan of the film STAR! and have loved it ever since I first saw it.

I had a letterboxed version of DRLING LILI which I taped off AMC years ago, but I junked it when the DVD came out. I wish you'd mentioned it sooner. I'd have been glad to send it to you.

I've been up since five-thirty - the phone rang - NY call, someone thinking that my home line was somehow my office line or something.  I didn't take the call, but I couldn't go back to sleep.  I just lay in my bed like so much fish, then watched a bit of a movie - so, three whole hours of sleep I've had.  Must try and catch up this weekend.

HIYA ALL!
In my VCR (just when will I get a DVD player!) is STAR! starring Julie Andrews as Gertrude Lawrence.

I love this movie! Julie gets to really strut her stuff singing, dancing and acting. And those costumes by Donald Brooks! Of course, it helps to have good writing (William Fairchild), directing (Robert Wise) and choreography (Michael Kidd). The last part of the film is especially well-written and acted. Daniel Massey, a particular favorite of mine who died too young, puts in a wonderful performance as Noel Coward and Richard Crenna is solid as her husband.

I'm trying to find a VT version of that other musical she did around this time called Darling Lili.

Dear esteemed BK:

Is your copy of Spirit of St. Louis part of the Jimmy Stewart Signature Collection?  I was just now checking the product listing at Amazon, and it looks like a package I'd like to have.

Yes, it's part of that package.  I must warn in advance that the transfer of The Naked Spur (which I'll be writing about shortly) is pretty awful - soft to the point of being completely out of focus - with no detail whatsoever.

I'm thinking I might want to insist on stopping by either Tower or Borders in Philly, while we're there tomorrow.  Der B and I are taking the grandlads to see Lion King, (with parents in tow) and both stores are conveniently close to the theater.

That, and it will drive Magic Mommy insane because she hateshateshates anyone other than herself shopping (and then, she never shops for something that might fill her brain).  I owe her that.

Hey, gang! Whatta beauteous day here! Autumn approaches... some of the leaves have already started turning. A bittersweet time of year.

Yesterday I got  a lot of work done on the handouts for my seminar, which starts Sunday evening at the Redmond library. No clue if I'll have three or thirty in the class... have to make a guess before running off too many copies. Or too few. Sheesh. I'm guessing I won't have more than fifteen. Twelve to fifteen is a perfect number for this type of workshop. The second one is Wednesday evening, and the last is Saturday afternoon - after which, I have an author appearance and reading of Jewish Thighs in Woodinville. A week later, I close up the house and winterize the garden and join the birds on the migration south! Oh how this summer has flown.

DVD - a strange little autobiographical film by the Farrelly Brothers, featuring Meryl Streep (?!?!), called Stuck on You. Conjoined twins decide to try having individual lives. Greg Kinear and Matt Damon are the brothers. Cher and Meryl S play themselves.

And all I want to do is watch movies on DVD today, too.  Sigh.

It IS a very good film.  A bit indulgent, lengthwise, IMO...especially for a Billy Wilder film.

But Stewart's rawly honest performance and a world-class Franz Waxman underscore (totally thrilling) keep this movie aloft to the rousing, spectacular ending.

One of the only smart things I did during all my surgery angst of late 2004 was to catalogue mine.  Now, when something arrives, I already have a data base to work from.  It certainly takes a lot of time, however.  Now, if I could only remember to whom I lend them!

I began my afternoon watching "Water Birds," the Disney True-Life Adventure short which is contained on THE RESCUERS DVD.

I read that Disney is coming out with four commemorative editions of True-Life Adventure features and shorts in early December, and I know I'll be buying all of them. I have the features on videotape, but only "Water Birds" of the shorts.

I know Disney will do nothing in the way of clean-up and mastering of these old films, and I have to say they look pretty bad on DVD without some help. Still, I'll keep my criticisms to a minimum because I do want them all in one group. It'll be nice to see PERRI again, the only one of them I haven't seen in a long time.

Next up was THRILL OF A ROMANCE, an Esther Williams-Van Johnson Technicolor musical. Of course, neither of them make any of the music. That's left to Lauritz Melchior and other supporting players.

The TCM print looked excellent for the most part, but there were three or four scenes where there were definite  Technicolor registration errors. Otherwise, this was nice to see again, and it's probably the movie where Esther is her prettiest.

And I finished the afternoon with PANAMA HATTIE. This mess of a musical looks today totally thrown together, and stories in Hugh Fordin's book about its making certainly point to refilming things to try to add some entertainment value to the picture. Dan Dailey got a lot better later on in the decade, and Red Skelton seemed more suited to a solo act than paired with two other nitwits (Rags Ragland and Ben Blue).

Hi all.  Fall is my least favorite time of year.  For whatever reason, it makes me feel very sad, depressed and sometimes fearful.  I don't know why.

We had another day of heavy rains.  It just kept rolling in.

I'm only reading one book and that's my bathroom book where I sneek some reading time for myself.  Sometimes at 2 or 3 AM I get a half hour or more read.  It's called "The King".  It's the 2nd book in what I'm sure will turn into trilagy.

I'm a bit miffed with the first book because it's about a power that requires the person who used it stay a virgin so the guy and his best friend become lovers because that doesn't  "count".  The best friend knows that he is just a boy toy until the king decides it's time for an heir.

Anyway, I don't really like to book(s) as a whole but I since I always buy all the books when there is a serius, I'll finish it.

Sheena is still being a real problem with tearing things up while I'm gone.  I hate to say it but I'm back to the point where I think I may have to find her another home.  I don't want to take her back to the pound and if I decide it would be best for her to find some other home, I will do my best to do that for her.  I think there is a lab rescure group near by.

Good heavens. I think I've finally discovered the secret elixer to get the cats calmed down.  Catnip. The first time I gave it to them both they fought like crazy, but that was early on.  Tonight I bought a couple more scratching posts for Boo and they came with cat nip. They have both been so mellow, it's fabulous!

The good thing about Terrence Malik is that he is far from being a prolific movie maker so avoiding his movies is easy for those who are bored by them! Since The New World has "bombed" Mr Malik, like he has done before, might wait 20 years before doing another film so, those bored by his creations, can play it safe!

He seems to be one of the few movie makers to understand that movies are first and foremost visual expressions and that if one needs words in lieu of "views" one's better writing a book!
Days of Heaven is one of the few films that have mesmerized me over the years!

I have been listening lately to some cds of Mr Jerry Hadley, Miss Dawn Upshaw, the original London cast of Pajama Game and young Frank Sinatra singing Cole Porter!

Who could ask for anything more? (Toyota?!)

So, is Jewish Thighs in Woodinville the sequel to Jewish Thighs on Broadway?  ;)

Who knows? It might be the prequel?! :)

Was JEWISH THIGHS IN WOODINVILLE, the sequel to JEWISH THIGHS ON BROADWAY?

Eighty posts?  Eighty posts?  Holy moley on rye this is nauseating.  Here, I thought we were over the August hump.  All right, I want the names of the errant and truant.  Jane I know is off doing terribly busy things - so busy that she can't even come by and say hello.  Bitch-slap.  Ann and Jed are too busy being Ann and Jed.  Bitch-slap.  Who else do I need to bitch-slap?

We got five of the seven stories done today, and will finish the other two on Sunday.  It looks spiffy, I must say.  I brought home what we did, so I can proof this part before Sunday - I can already see some problems that happened because of going to a new font and out of Word into Quark.  Minor stuff, but it all has to be gone over very carefully.

Well, I think MONK, which I'm watching, continues to jump the shark.  I find the character no longer interesting and quirky but totally assinine, put into sitations wherein he's a fish out of water for needless attempts at humor, tonight's episode taking place a rock concert.  He confuses a portable toilet for a phone booth while actually walking past a real phone booth and behaves as if in his years as a cop he'd never confronted rowdy rock concert patrons or had a remote contact with any reality.  A cople of weeks ago, during a garbage strike he mailedhis garbage to his shrink.  It's a cheap joke, like the toilet-phone booth, but seems totally beyond the realities of this character.  What has happened to a once excellent series?

I am watching Facing Life, the Re-trial on A and E.  It's the retrial of a case in Wisconsin where the defendant was originally convicted of murder then he received a new trial thanks to The Innocense Project.  I think he's going to win, but I don't know.

The interesting thing is I just had a conversation over lunch yesterday with a fellow criminal defense lawyer who was telling me about one of the defense lawyers in this case and how great a lawyer he is.  I had no idea this was going to be on tonight.

Kidnapped girl free after eight-year captivity

Deutsche Presse Agentur
Published: Wednesday August 23, 2006

Vienna- A young woman escaped to freedom Wednesday afternoon after eight years' captivity in Austria's most sensational post-war kidnapping case, said initial police reports. The report said Natascha Kampusch, who disappeared without trace aged ten on March 2, 1998, had been held captive in a cellar within 30 kilometres of Vienna.

Natascha's disappearance happened at a time when Europe was preoccupied by the notorious Belgian Dutroux case of child abduction and murder.

In 1998 she vanished on her way to school in Vienna. A nationwide search was immediately launched. Hundreds of police scoured the whole of eastern Austria. Helicopters were brought in, and rivers dragged. No trace of her was ever found.

On Wednesday afternoon a young woman suddenly appeared at Deutsch Wagram in eastern Austria. First reports said she was thrown out, or had jumped out, of a car. Austrian ORF television reported she had been seen "staggering around" in a garden.

The woman told police her name was Natascha Kampusch. Comparative DNA tests were immediately started. A nationwide search was launched for the driver of the car. Natascha's parents were called in to possibly identify their daughter.

Head of Vienna criminal police Herwig Haidinger said the Kampusch case could finally have come to "a happy end." But it was not yet 100 per cent certain whether the young woman was in fact Natascha. However, relatives had already identified her.

Haidinger said the suspect wanted for kidnapping was a 44-year-old man named as "Wolfgang P.", resident in the village of Strasshof near Gaenserndorf, where Natascha had apparently been held for most or all of the time.

Police said the young woman had told them her captor had allowed her to listen to radio, but only occasionally TV. She had had access to newspapers, but had mostly been cut off from the outside world.

Investigators said the young woman gave an appearance of "having been away from the light of day for a long time." Her skin was pale. Otherwise she made a good impression. "She expresses herself well, and can read and write," said an investigator.

Details emerge on abducted woman's escape
The Associated Press

Published: August 25, 2006
VIENNA A young woman escaped eight years of captivity by bolting when her abductor stepped away to take a phone call while she was vacuuming his car, the authorities said Friday.

The Austrian police also confirmed that DNA tests had confirmed the identity of the woman, Natascha Kampusch. Relatives had already identified her, but the police had been waiting for the test results to remove any doubt.

Erich Zwettler, the head of Austria's federal police, said that the young woman escaped from her abductor in an unguarded moment while he stepped away with his mobile phone because of noise from the vacuum. The police had initially said she escaped when the small metal door of her underground cell was left open.

Kampusch vanished on her way to school on March 2, 1998. The man suspected of abducting her killed himself Wednesday a few hours after she fled and sought help at a home on the quiet street where she says she was held.

The police, who confirmed the identity of the suspect as Wolfgang Priklopil, a 44-year-old communications technician, said he had committed suicide by throwing himself in front of a commuter train in Vienna.

Photographs made public by the police of the hiding place where Kampusch said she was kept showed a small, cluttered room with narrow concrete stairs leading down from an entrance so small that it would have to be crawled through. Another photo showed a metal hatch that sealed the windowless, underground room.

Strasshof, the small town near Vienna where Kampusch was kept, is a semi-rural community where tidy houses adorned with flower boxes are mostly set close together. Children play freely in the streets and doors are left open.

Neighbors said they were shocked by the reports and had seen no signs of anything to raise suspicion.

The A&E documentary Facing Life; The Retrial of Evan Zimmerman was very powerful.  It's from the defense point of view, so of course I could easily relate to it.

I bet you're glad you don't have to defend that one, Cillaliz.

The kidnapping?  Well, he killed himself, so no one will have to defend him. I guess the only way to answer that is, yes, I'm glad I don't have to, but if I got the case, I would still do everything I could to defend him.

I finally got so fed up with people here in LA who are just too lazy and ridiculous to ever want to go out for a late-night snack that I just toddled over to Du-Par's by myself, manucript in hand, and had a couple of poached eggs and did corrections.  I actually enjoyed it, and may do it more.  Heaven forbid anyone I know actually get off their ASS and DO something after nine at night.  Pathetic.
