And the word of the day is: PERIPHRASTIC!
Looped (http://www.loopedonbroadway.com/)
was great fun. Ms. Harper was excellent. She's funny and has a great vocal sound. Her raucous laugh is wonderful and she has an excellent sense of comedy and timing. Brian Hutchison plays the film editor pressed into directing the session. He plays frustrated very well but, especially in the first act, there is a sameness to some of the dialogue and action, more a fault of the play, I think, than the performances. He shines (as does Harper) in the second act in his breakdown scene (no spoilers here but it was clear to both me and my friend what his "secret" was). Poor Michael Mulheren seems to be playing almost off-stage characters. He spends the show up in the engineer's booth. If the show was re-written you could probably find a way to eliminate the character completely. That's not to say Mulheren isn't good. He is, but the character is secondary. The production is excellent and the talent is wonderful but at times the play seems a bit contrived to me. Also the depiction of alcohol and drug use seems a bit off in terms of how Miss Bankhead (sorry, I mean Tallulah...an inside joke from the show) recovers in the second act to be as lucid as she becomes. This was my view and confirmed by a friend who is actually "in recovery" and has been sober for over 13 years. Oh, well, it's dramatic license.
All in all I think it's well worth seeing and I think Ms. Harper will get some well deserved kudos.
How about a picture of the legless book cover?

OH!
An "Eight is Enough" reunion on "The Today Show"!
Well, it's 3:45 am and I've been up for the past hour. I am also very angry about it. Very.
About an hour ago I went to the bathroom to discover the bathroom rug soaking wet and plaster all over the floor, something that occurred between 11 pm last night and now, but I couldn't have heard it because of the damned earplugs I wear because of the neighbor above me! So, after a short debate on cleaning up the mess or going back to bed, I opted to go back to bed, only at that point the neighbor arrived home and I got to hear 30 minutes of his squeaky bed while he and whomever have sex. I figured then, screw it, since he is, got up and cleaned up the bathroom. Now I'm so angry that I cannot sleep.
The leak has been going on for some time, bit it stopped for a while. It was back yesterday afternoon when I returned hme from Toyland. Since I don't know if it's caused by the neighbor above me or another apartment, it's difficult to find the source. I know it was gone for a while but now it's back.

DRMBARNUM and DR DRUXY are probably the only two DR's who can name all four of these young ladies. ;D
DR Elmore - we're having plumbing problems here, too, but we can check out soon and walk away. Vibes that your mess gets cleaned up promptly!

It was for a Life Magazine Cover story November 8, 1954, but even though the story ran, the cover did not.
I am thinking by '54, that Mari had already gone platinum.
At least she was in '53 in Abbott & Costello go to Mars.

At 5:30 p.m. today on TCM - Richard Brooks' production of THE BROTHER KARAMAZOV.....I have only seen a part of this movie and look forward to seeing it ALL!

I did not set this movie to record, should I?
I just saw my super, who is Romanian, and he informed me that the plum-ber had come and gone and that all should be fine in the bathrom now. In a couple of weeks, if the leak has indeed been solved, I will have a new ceiling.
I learned a bit at the NYPL and, following a stop at the market, I am making chicken soup and puttering about the apartment.

It's been years (and years) since I've seen it. A bit overblown, way oversimplified in terms of the source novel, but good in that late 50's Hollywood epic sort of way. Fun to see William Shatner in one of his first roles.

Tonight they are going to announce the new celebs for this season's DANCING WITH THE STARS. I thought all the names would have been leaked. But i've only seen a few (kate gosselin and perhaps pamela anderson). I am still really annoyed with the show for dumping so many of their popular professional. Apparently Kym asked for more money so they canned her too (in addition to karina, lacey and jonathan). And Dimitri won't be on this season most likely either. :(
Great photo, John G.! Thanks for posting. Is that a cheetah? It is a cheetah. After dinner, rubbing his back. I'll have some more spotted spottings for you in a day or two. Glad you liked him.

DR George, thirty years ago I was exactly like you: every new cast recording had to be in my possession. Then I realized one day that many of them, especially the revival cast recordings with new arrangements and reduced orchestras, weren't worth the time or waste of money. I'd only be interested in the new A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC if it had Tunick's orchestrations and it does not. As to ALW's newest, I would only want to hear it for Larry Blank's orchestrations - I do believe and he did them all, no matter what the credit says - but I'll find it down the pike in a used CD store for a lot less than its current selling price.
DR JANE - as DR JMK said - it's fun in the important 1950's film way.....and Yul Brynner and Maria Schell are both very nice to look at, even if their dueling accents can be a challenge to listen to....and of course William Shatner.

Does this explain, DR Elmore, why I have eight different recordings of "Annie Get Your Gun," even though it's not one of my more favorite scores? I mean there's one with someone named Susie Quattro, and I haven't a clue as to who she is. But it must have been $4 or $5 in a used CD bin someplace, so it ended in the collection, along with the two Ethels, the Mary, the Bernadette, the Delores, the Betty and the John McGlinn.

That's one name i had not heard. I'm pretty sure about Kate Gosselin. Pamela Anderson has been mentioned a lot. I'm pretty sure now about Shannen Doherty (being paired with mark). I just did a search on Greg Louganis and it says he really wants to be on DWTS. I guess we shall see tonight.
But I still think it sucks that Kym and Karina will not be on the show this season. It would be one thing if they did not want to be on. But for them to not ask back people's favorites is crazy.

I also read that a football player Chad Ochocinco would be on, too.
I started Weight watchers online again today. Unfortunately it still has all my old info, so I get to see exactly how much I've regained. I've only been dieting a couple days and I'm already feeling better
My favorite line from viewing the short films for our festival yesterday is this one

Interesting Closing Ceremonies. Although I was thinking that Celine Dion was going to be on (being that she is one of the most famous canadian singers).

TOD: I was going to say the "Die Hard" movies and "Terminator," but then my brain kicked in and I remembered those were mindless '80s movies (I'm getting old).
So, I would have to say the early Guy Ritchie movies, like "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch." They're fun, they're mindless.
I like Jason Statham's movies, too, like "Transporter" and the "Death Race" remake. He's got a low-key, engaging personality that makes the flicks fun.
DR JANE - KARAMAZOV was okay.....some good performances, but read the book instead. And the sound mix was very low. I had my speakers up about 1/3 more than I usually do, and some of the actors were still very very quiet.

I have never been a fan of the terminator movies
The super has been here to see the mess and tackled the neighbor upstairs, who's clearly been having problems with his loose toilet and doing nothing about it. In fact, while the super was here, there was water dripping from the ceiling. So, I guess a plumber will be visiting my neighbor in the near future, and I will get a ceiling repair wihen all the wet plaster dries out. Of course, the big question is, how soon will the plumber make a visit?

I'm in a bit of shock over the quote for LeafGuard gutters at the new house. We have them here at this house, so I knew they're not exactly cheap, but, wowza, was the bid high. Like 5 figures high!!

I hope nobody took this as a put-down to women. I was just worried that with the neighbor's reputation, no actual plumbing would get done.

Hello, everyone.
George, congrats to you on your clean house! IMHO, organization is a very personal thing. I used to know a dance teacher who kept spare plastic bags in the refrigerator. It seemed quite logical to her, because that's where she kept the food that she usually put in them. Her logic was not my logic, but I guess it worked for her! In any case, I know how easy it is for a house to get cluttered and how time-consuming it is to undo it all.
