Lest you Dear Readers out there in the dark think "Drop the Needle" is a druggie reference, please be enlightened.
If you've ever seen the first act of The Lisbon Traviata, you know how "Drop the Needle" is played.
"Drop the Needle" is a favorite pastime--though its technology is somewhat dated--of opera queens everywhere. It's sort of a party game, where the host places an opera recording on the turntable, drops the tonearm (and its needle) somewhere in the middle of some aria/duet/trio/quartet/quintet/sextet/scena/etc./etc./etc. and his (and it's always his) guests have to guess, as appropriate to the piece being played, the composer, opera, singers, and date and location of the recording.
