BK would have loved my house this morning. The neighbor spent a good twenty minutes grinding his big diesel truck this morning trying to get it started. At 6:30 a.m.Yikes. Did you have your moose gun handy?
And the word of the day is: FUTHARK!
DR JOHN G I finally watched UNITED 93 earlier this year - it was hard to watch, but I am glad I did.I was ultimately glad I did, too.
My first transitor radio was an AMC, I believe, which was a Shillito's Department Store brand. Shillito's was in Cincinnati, part of the Federated chain of stores, for which my father was an architect, so we got 20% off by shopping there. I think I still have it in a memory box somewhere. It's a little bigger than a deck of cards. Has a leather case with a strap and a little pouch that snaps on the side of it to carry the ear phone. I think it may still even work. With the ear phone plugged in, I used to listen to Moon River, a show of organ music and poetry, every night before I went to bed.
Of course I remember L.S. Ayres, and Wasson's, and Block's - all the big downtown stores. We would go there now and then....It was a huge treat getting to have lunch with the ladies at one of the tea rooms in Louisville, including L.S. Ayers at the Mall. I always had chicken salad on white toast. The Norstrom's here has a pretty good restaurant. The place at Nieman Marcus not so good.
DR GINNY the Tea Room has been replicated at the Indiana Museum right down to the silverware and waitresses' uniforms...you can still have lunch or tea.....

I'm here after a long weekend. Show is fine, sounds fine, people can hear fine. It's was just fine.Now, if you had had that Maker's Mark with tea, honey and lemon, you'd be on the road to recovery. That was mother's medicine when I was growing up.
I, personally, am not fine. Think I'm fighting a cold and have a headache this morning. Which I'm sure is from the Makers Mark over ice I had before bed. It was a good thought at the time...
I must be dreaming. We simply can't be on page two.

TOD:
My first record player was one of this children's portables. It was white and it folded in half into a carrying case. LPs were larger than the case, so they hung over the edge when you played them. There was no long spindle in the middle, so you couldn't play a stack of 45s. Still, it had enough volume and a decent enough sound that you could enjoy it.
My first transistor was a cheapie giveaway at some department store opening. It had one of those one-ear earphones, and I played it forever. The big station in Louisville on the AM dial back then was WAKY and it drove my parents wacky when my sisters and I played it.
I did make a transistor radio for Cub Scouts. It was little more than soldering a few parts together and following the instructions. I didn't understand what any of it meant, and the kit was not helpful in that regard. But the radio worked. And that was way cool back then.
I took apart stuff, too. Then I let the parts sit there, like so much fish, as someone might saTOD:

When I was a kid, I took apart a couple of radios...but wasn't able to put them back together. ::)

Sept. 17, 2012, would have marked Tony Award winner Dorothy Loudon (http://www.playbillvault.com/Person/Detail/75807/Dorothy-Loudon)'s 79th birthday. In celebration of the Broadway comic genius, we look back at Loudon's career with a handful of favorite performances.
Just saw this on Playbill.com:Thanks, George. I could watch that clip from "Ballroom" just about any time. I also loved the clip from the Gary Moore show of her singing with Dorothy Collins and Eileen Ferrell.

I learned some interesting things there about avid book readers. A bunch of them have no interest in ereaders (well they haven't tried them to know). But they were against getting/using them.
It's funny but before i got my kindle i didn't think i'd love it. And now i cannot even imagine not having it.
I had very nice evening with my extended family bringing in the Jewish New Year
And the October Kritzerland show is finally cast. And it's a wonderful group with a couple of new faces, which is always fun for us. Kevin Bailey, Juliana Hansen, Euan Morton (Tony nominee for Taboo), Joanne O'Brien, and Angel Reda (just played Elphaba on one of the Wicked tours), and our two guest stars, Kay Cole (the original Maggie from A Chorus Line) and Jason Graae (the original Cassie - oh, wait, he WANTED to be the original Cassie).
No Jews ever invite me anywhere.

~~~~~STAY COLD-FREE VIBES TO DR MATTHEW~~~~~
DR JoseSPiano will soon be converging on the Pacific Northwest.
I never lived in Cincinnati, but through visits to my parents who moved there from Florida in 1970, I well remember Shillito's, McAlpin's, and Pogue's (hello - DR Charles Pogue??). And above all, the original Lazarus from my childhood in Columbus. I still love the traditional, original downtown department stores, those that are left.
I miss the feel of holding a special book and I miss having favorite author's autograph a book. I miss reading hardbacks and then keeping the ones I like on my bookshelf.
On the other hand, I do like reading an eBook. :)
There was a time I almost always purchased books. Or, after reading a book from the library that I loved I went out and got the hard copy to keep. It was when I realized I simply can't keep them all, plus there are other ways to spend my money if I'm not keeping the books.From DR Jennifer:QuoteI learned some interesting things there about avid book readers. Well you seem to read mostly on your nook. I personally still read more real books than ebooks. But i do read a fair amount of ebooks. And i don't expect the book bloggers to only read ebooks. But many of them seem to buy almost every book they read. I personally don't see the need for that. It seems slightly crazy. They do get some free books for review. But I prefer to do a combo of netgalley, library and winning books. Plus i've won a lot of amazon.com giftcards. So if there are any ebooks/mostly e-novellas that i want i just take them off my giftcard total.
Someone actually had an ebook giveaway last week where they were giving away 10 ebooks for each winner in like 6 different genres. I won the YA category. I was pretty happy about that. :)
Went out for chinese food for my niece's birthday. Yummy. So was so happy all day. She just loves her birthday. And she decided she wanted to take pictures with my camera. So i need to see what she did. I did notice a few of myself that i need to delete (as i don't want to see them again).
Feel better vibes for DRs Jane and Matthew. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But how many books did you buy a year? These people are probably buying like 100-200 books a year.
