Hmm...dreams....probably the strangest dreams I had, or used to have, were ones where the Night of the Living Dead zombies were chasing me and my friends/relatives/aquaintences. I used to have this scenario as a dream on a semi-regular basis, but not for about 10 years now.

My other stranges dreams are of being back in high school because I find out I did not really graduate.

This may sound nuts, but I think that, in dreams, we are sometimes "visited" by people who are gone.

From time-to-time, I've had those  kinds of visitations from deceased family members or friends.

For example, 3-4 years ago, an actor friend died.  A few months later, I had a couple of very vivid dreams about him.  It was like he was trying to tell me something.

I spoke to his daughter, told her about the dreams, and told her that I thought her father was trying to tell me that he was "okay".

After that, the dreams stopped.

Strange, I know.  But, it happened.

I lked THE WRESTLER.....haven't gotten to see SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE yet, will probably wait for the DVD....but Rourke and Tomei were both so very good....didn't really care much for the actress playing the daughter....but it may be because her character was such a one note b---h.

Shortly after I found the pictures of the group of us having breakfast in Studio City the first weekend of the LA Premiere of The Brain From Planet X. I had a couple of dreams involving several of the participants. One wacky. One embarrassing (to me) what the contents of the dream was.

Another dream was so weird that after I woke up I wrote down and it eventually became a short story. But the people in the dream were people I never seen before and had no idea where my brain created them or the plot of the dream

We discussed dreams here once long ago, and someone kindly provided the term for the state where you are semi-aware that you are dreaming, and you can actually influence how you yourself are acting in the dream.  I found that fascinating and had intended to do some further research, but can't remember now the terminology for it.    :P

I can rarely remember my dreams.  The dreams that I do seem to remember better are the ones that occur when I've gotten up early in the morning, gone back to bed, and have dreamed in the short window just before awakening.

DR singdaw, I think the term you're looking for is lucid dreaming.  I've been able to do this myself only once or twice, but not to any real interesting effect that I recall.

I can't recall at the mo' exactly what was my most extraordinary dream, but I've had a lot of interesting ones.  In fact, last week I had one which I kept meaning to relate here:  in it, I somehow found myself playing the lead in a professional and prominent production of SWEENEY TODD.  It was opening night, and I kept telling the director (it must have been John Doyle) that I was familiar with the role and that I probably knew the lyrics to most of the songs, but there was no way that I was prepared to actually perform the show.  He kept saying, "Don't be such a worry wart--you'll be fine!"  and he walked away to wish some backstage person good luck.  My anxiety increased as I began to realize that there were only two other cast members (which is why I'm sure the director was Doyle.)  As I was standing backstage waiting for the curtain to rise, someone told me that I was supposed to be out on stage playing the opening organ music.  I peeked onto the stage and saw that the organ was the size of the Wanamaker organ here in Philly!  That's when I woke up.

I really don't expect DR JRand to run all the dreams he comes across here today on the Dream-O-Matic 6000.  I'm pretty sure I have an idea that this dream means that I'm over-anxious about undertaking some task that I should actually enjoy.  That, and I have issues about John Doyle.

Since I retired, I have had a series of dreams about being back in the classroom but always with unruly students which I really didn't have much of when I was actually teaching. (I ran a very tight ship.) The dreams seem to come in spurts, a few during the course of a couple of weeks and then none for months at a time. I really hate those dreams.

I remember one dream I used to have all the time in my younger years. I was asleep on the edge of the world and could feel myself slipping off and falling into space. Then I'd wake up. It wasn't like I was on the side of the bed about to fall off or anything. Never could figure that dream out or why I had it so often. I haven't had it for decades, but I remember I woke up dozens of times from that same nightmare.

As I mentioned last night, today I'll be watching MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, Douglas Sirk's 1954 melodramatic adaptation of the book, first filmed in 1935. That original version is also in the set (on disc two). With both films in the package plus a bunch of other bonus features and a commentary, I'm not sure I can get the entire package finished today. We'll see how well I progress this afternoon.

Good morning, all!  My final edits initiated a panic attack so I've been doing riot control this morning. I hope things are fine now.

DR Nursie, I loved IN BRUGES; very funny, rather violent, but I love the writer Martin McDonagh's sense of humor. His LIEUTENANT of INISHMORE was one of the funniest plays I've ever seen but also one of the bloodiest. And Colin Farrell was really wonderful in IN BRUGES.

And some definitions of Brain Wave Activity during sleep.

Beta is the first stage of sleep. During this time the brain begins to shift the mind from it waking consciousness to prepare it to enter into the next level of sleep. The body automatically lowers the heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature and the muscles of the body begin to relax.

Alpha is the condition we enter during the time between the stage of being awake and actually drifting off to sleep. During this state we often feel the sensation of drifting. Most of our dreams happen during this stage of sleep. It is easily recognizable by rapid eye movements (REM) which can last several minutes.

The Theta stage is when the body is fully engulfed in sleep. During this stage brain waves move quickly from theta to delta waves. If we are awakened during this state, we often become disoriented because it takes the body several minutes to snap back into its conscious state.

Delta is the deepest level of sleep. Most people don't dream during this state.


Of course it is training our brain waves that allows us to have an OBE....if we wish.

Speaking of the TOD - last night I had a dream I ran into DR Jose, DR Elmore and DR Vixmom near a subway station in NYC.  It was like we were old pals.  I don't remember why I was there or what I was doing, it was all nondescript, as most dreams are.  All I can remember is meeting them on the street. 

Today, I have a funeral service to do (part of the job) and then the DP and I are going to IKEA.

1. Tina Fey's speech. So funny. I wish more speeches could be funny.

2. Kate Winslet the 2nd time. So gracious. So elegant. What a fantastic speaker even when nervous and flustered. Loved it.

Actually this is more about "Food Writing".  The New York Times recently instituted some changes to their Food pages in the NYT Magazine.  One of the new monthly columns is "Cooking with Dexter".  -Dexter if the four-year old son of the writer.  I thought the first installment which appeared last weekend, well... It brought a smile to my face.

Um, I have to disagree with #2, DR Jennifer.  I would have expected so much more eloquence from someone like Winslet.  And I really don't understand all the emotion involved.  For one thing, she is a critics' darling who should be used to heaps of praise she's received over the years of her career and for another--it's just the Golden Globe. 

I adore Kate Winslet and I don't begrudge her double win at all, but I think she's too much of a veteran to fall apart over the Golden Globes.

Saturday morning, I happened to get caught up in a mini-marathon of "Man v. Food" (http://www.travelchannel.com/TV_Shows/Man_v_Food) on the Travel Channel.  I was surprised I had never come across the program before, especially since the host basically has one of my "dream jobs".  ;)  However...

I really have to wonder if the host, Adam Richman, evens bothers going in for a physical or blood tests after taking on some of the "challenges" he does:

Well actor Michael C Hall married his Dexter sister, Jennifer Carpenter (i think that is her name).

I have not yet read the posts on the Golden Globes. But my 2 favorite moments last night were:

1. Tina Fey's speech. So funny. I wish more speeches could be funny.

2. Kate Winslet the 2nd time. So gracious. So elegant. What a fantastic speaker even when nervous and flustered. Loved it.

Um, I have to disagree with #2, DR Jennifer.  I would have expected so much more eloquence from someone like Winslet.  And I really don't understand all the emotion involved.  For one thing, she is a critics' darling who should be used to heaps of praise she's received over the years of her career and for another--it's just the Golden Globe. 

I adore Kate Winslet and I don't begrudge her double win at all, but I think she's too much of a veteran to fall apart over the Golden Globes.

I completely disagree.

Just because you have gotten praise for 2 roles does not mean that anyone would ever expect to win 2 times on the same night.

I thought she seemed stunned.  It seemed totally genuine to me.  I think it's nice to see someone surprised and with a little humility vs a totally prepared non-emotional speech.

What strikes me at every "awards" show is that folks can dress themselves up, deck themselves out and even "look" every inch a goddess/god, but when they open their mouths to talk it becomes painfully obvious how much they rely upon screenwriters to weave their magic.

There was a time when every actor's training included speaking extemporaneously...and speaking with style.

Listening last night to many of the presenters (and they were a GHASTLY lot) and awardees, it was clear that even if you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear (except in the case of Mickey Rourke), the purse will still go "oink".

Her first wins against major competition I think is what floored her. I find it completely understandable. After years of showing up (and sometimes being the favorite as in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY), and to go home empty handed, it shocking to finally hear your name called.

I thoroughly agree with you, DR Jennifer.  There were some truly stinky acceptance speeches last night -- not to mention some truly awful "presenter banter" -- and Winslet stood out and above the rest of the pack.  So did Tina Fey.

And besides, so many folks walk off with a Golden Globe only to be passed over for an Oscar nomination (anyone remember Madonna winning for "Evita"?).  No guarantees that this wouldn't be "it" for a long time.  To have two films for which she received nominations AND recognition had to be a very overpowering thing for her last night.

I remember one dream I used to have all the time in my younger years. I was asleep on the edge of the world and could feel myself slipping off and falling into space. Then I'd wake up. It wasn't like I was on the side of the bed about to fall off or anything. Never could figure that dream out or why I had it so often. I haven't had it for decades, but I remember I woke up dozens of times from that same nightmare.

At the risk of being indelicate...

Youngsters often have "almost falling" dreams as a result of a full bladder and a fear of bed-wetting - they work - you usually wake up in time.

I must say it's fun doing a show this new--the books from MTI are SPOTLESS. ;)

I believe most of Act One is Doug and most of Act Two is by Larry Blank.

Most of the harmonization of the score, I would guess, is by Glen Kelly, who is a genius in my book.

DR Nursie, I loved IN BRUGES; very funny, rather violent, but I love the writer Martin McDonagh's sense of humor. His LIEUTENANT of INISHMORE was one of the funniest plays I've ever seen but also one of the bloodiest. And Colin Farrell was really wonderful in IN BRUGES.

In a strange bit of kismet, I went out at lunch time to buy a small, small calander to hang on the wall by my desk here in the office.  The pickings were extremely thin, even at the calander store where I shopped.  I decided on somthing called "Challenge--featuring motivational themes and inspirational quotes".

I just unwrapped it at my desk and flipped it open to January.  The theme for the month:  DREAM.

Spooky, ain't it?

It would then seem that one needs to either see the movies in theatre or, if at home, in BD, in order to make a value judgment.

Bk's concerns about studios deliberately dumbing down SD to promote BD. it would seem that the studios would insist on BD screeners if they want to encourage votes.

As a signs that BD is "taking over":

Wal-Mart is now packaging BD 2-fers (I got Cloverfield and Sleepy Hollow for under $30). Wal-Mart is also putting budget BDs in their end-cap displays. I saw T-II, Stargate, and Total Recall each for only $10.

I didn't post about the Golden Globes last night, but i assumed they were on live on the West Coast just like the Oscars.

I think though that even with the Oscars, a lot of the details are mentioned here. And even if the exact winner is not mentioned it's often easy to figure out who won. So i'd say if you are gonna watch the show then wait and read/and post at HHW after.

Some people had asked about the Shark steam mop.

I got the distilled water on friday and tried it this weekend.

It is very easy to use. And quite an interesting experience.

You turn it on, wait a few seconds and pump it and it starts working.

At first i wasn't sure if it was working. Because i was seeing steam. And when i'd walk over that area it felt hot. But it dried almost instantly.

I think it depends what kind of flooring you have. But so far i tried it in the bathroom. And it was a pleasure to do it. IT took way less time, was much easier and it dried right away. And it wasn't disgusting looking at a sink full of gross water.

I also tried it in the entrance way. And it cleaned a lot and easily.

I'm just not sure how well the piece that comes off (to be washed) will clean. It got quite dirty.

So i'll have to see for that part.

The kitchen (maybe tomorrow) is next. But so far i like it. It's very easy and quick. But unlike a hand steamer, not that much water comes out. So no big watery mess!

Maybe that's a good idea - a vote.  Since I loathe the Golden Globes I didn't really care, but if others do then spoilers are fine.

As soon as a winner was announced, the name went up on IMDB for all to see so, while I did not watchthe program, I checked in every so often to see what/who had won.

And I've also dreamed of speaking with friends/loved ones who had passed on.

I've had fantastic dreams -- UFOs in full formation in the night skies....and horrific dreams of a nuclear winter with me searching for my parents.

Some dreams have actually helped me change behavioral patterns.

And some dreams have scared the crap out of me.

DR Edi--you mentioned this one before and I have the same kind of dream.  I find a very thin opening near a corner in a room and when I slip though it I find a cozy (though often dusty) room or new part of the house that is mine, all mine.

I did not question your value judgment on the DVD, I question making a value judgment on the film based on the SD DVD.

Blu-Ray is a very big niche - and growing daily; that it will overtake SD shortly seems inevitable. With the switch to all HDTV broadcast TV, Blu-Ray DVD players will be the norm. In 18 months, SD will be the niche.

There was a recent article in Variety that says the opposite.  Whether it will or won't remains to be seen.  A lot of people have spent a lot of money on DVDs and do NOT want to buy into another format at this point.  I've had a hi-def TV long before you and I still have not seen the necessity to buy a Blu-Ray player - the best of the SD transfers are great.  I'm sure I'll eventually get a player and maybe sooner than later - we'll see.  In the meantime, whether I see a bad transfer of The Dark Knight or a great transfer of The Dark Knight, it's not going to change my opinion of the FILM.

Actually, some of the screeners are simply just that, "screeners".  They are not meant to be "home theatre experiences".  A friend of mine who is a SAG member, has done side-by-side comparisons for some films, the screener vs. the commercial release, and most of the time, he's found that the screeners are a bit lacking.  It all seems to depend just how many extras end up being on the final commercially-released DVD.  The more extras, the better the screener.  In other words, it all depends just how prepped the commercial DVD is at the time that the screeners are sent out.

Makes sense to me.

I didn't post about the Golden Globes last night, but i assumed they were on live on the West Coast just like the Oscars.

I think though that even with the Oscars, a lot of the details are mentioned here. And even if the exact winner is not mentioned it's often easy to figure out who won. So i'd say if you are gonna watch the show then wait and read/and post at HHW after.


I didn't even set them to record so I didn't realize they weren't live.  As much as I like spoilers it it does seems difficult to keep putting them up during the awards.

I'm not sure you've had a hi-def TV long before us (the TV I was posting about was a second set for the bedroom). I suspect I'm in the upper 1%-tile of DVD owners (over 1000 titles). My opting for a Blu-Ray player for the bedroom did not obsolete my collection - indeed it enhanced it. We needed to get an up-convert player for the new TV anyway, so the upgrade to Blue Ray cost about $100. Now with the new player and TV all our SDs look better than ever, and we have to option of playing BD as well. (I would not have sprung for a hi-def player until they standardized on the format.) Look back in time and see how long it took CDs to move from "niche' to standard . The market will be driven by DVD buyers - most folks buying DVDs regularly will all have HDTV shortly; the prices on BDs is rapidly moving to what was the norm for SDs and I would expect a $99 Blu Ray player shortly. I have seen no serious debate as to whether or not BD will become a standard, just discussion on the timetable.

Sorry, DR JRand.  My rings are back where they belong and Richard and I are still married.  However, he's been without his wedding ring since the day after Christmas.  He needs to have it resized and the jeweler recommended that he let his finger adjust for a few weeks before they make a size determination.

The night Keith told me he loved me was the night we saw THE OWL & THE PUSSYCAT with Bill Bixby.  I wish I had the ticket stub for that night.  That was in April, 1966. :)

I spent all afternoon working on MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION. First I watched the movie proper. Mostly beautiful transfer at the proper ratio (2:1) with light to moderate grain structure very similar to the grain structure in IMITATION OF LIFE. I only saw a couple of places where the registration of the Technicolor went off and one brief shot where it looks like they were using an old dupe or something which was soft, faded, and weird surrounded by all that lush Technicolor and clarity in the other shots.

I had seen the 1954 version several times before, and it's never been my favorite Sirk. I like all of his other Rock Hudson pictures better than this one, and, of course, IMITATION OF LIFE is in a class by itself for lush, over-the-top melodrama. MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION is SO noble and earnest. It's just not much fun to watch, and honestly, I don't have the tear-streaked emotional reaction to it that I have to other similar melodramas.

Pardon my interruption into this discussion, but I would love to have something clarified that I have long wondered about.

I know you've had your high-def TV for a long time, BK, but it's being high-def only matters if the signal you are watching on it is a high-def signal, and my confusion is that I have long held the impression that you do not receive any high-def signals on your TV.

The set, being high-def, can only give you a high-def signal if you "receive" high-def broadcasts...either via an antenna/rabbit ears or via a cable package.  I''ve had the impression that you don't watch much TV at all and that you haven't subscribed to a high-def package.

Without that signal...and without Blu-ray or HD-DVD playback of BD or HD DVDs...you're watching analog TV on a set ready for high-definition broadcasts.

Here in Oakland, the weather is gorgeous and warm.  Too warm.  It's in the mid-70s, there are some gusting winds and the sky is blue, blue, blue.

I'd love it if the winds didn't wreak havoc with my sinuses!  For some reason the more air that rushes around me decreases the pneuma I need inside me.

BD is still a very small percentage of the DVD market.

At the moment. The driving force will be the major retailers: Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. WalMart is clearly moving toward BD based on shelf space, product placement, and pricing policy. The $10 BDs are getting prime shelf space while the $7.50 SDs are thrown in an aisle bin.

BD is still a very small percentage of the DVD market.

At the moment. The driving force will be the major retailers: Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc. WalMart is clearly moving toward BD based on shelf space, product placement, and pricing policy. The $10 BDs are getting prime shelf space while the $7.50 SDs are thrown in an aisle bin.

I've read a bit about the declining SD marketplace (to which I attribute too many reissues of the same titles...folks being frustrated about not getting the best possible quality the first time, etc.) as well as the sluggish acceptance rate of Blu-ray.

The BD format seems to be doing gangbusters in other countries, especially Australia where it seems to have outpaced SD discs in the past year.

The U.S. has GOT to make the shift to the new broadcasting format...and it needs to happen NOW, as scheduled.  I recently read, however, that Obama has lent his support to a movement that would -- AGAIN -- delay the start of the new standards.  I hope that doesn't happen because we'll never be readier than we are now.

Once folks find themselves between the rock and the hard place, they'll do what they need to do to get the proper converter signals into their sets.

 So far I have been managing three cans a day.  The doctor really wanted 4 but said he understands how difficult that is.  He was also pleased I hadn't lost any more weight so he said as long as I was doing at least 3 and didn't feel hungry not to force myself to consume the 4th can.

As much as I'd love to get Criterion's "Magnificent Obsession", I can't help but wonder WHY, WHY, WHY the label didn't release it in Blu-ray as well.  I just know they're going to go that route and I won't buy it twice.

It's bad enough they're issuing previously issued titles on BD...and that means if there is something we truly want on BD, we have to buy it again.

But why not at least give use the immediate choice on the new titles?

I don't know who is in the path of the winter weather onslaught....did Cilla ever weigh in or whether she got the blizzard or merely a snowfall?

Here in Oakland, the weather is gorgeous and warm.  Too warm.  It's in the mid-70s, there are some gusting winds and the sky is blue, blue, blue.

I'd love it if the winds didn't wreak havoc with my sinuses!  For some reason the more air that rushes around me decreases the pneuma I need inside me.

We were expecting some snow and temps warm enough to crust it over so the 50 mph winds wouldn't blow it around.  Guess again....we left the office around 3:00. It was pretty nasty and is still bad out.  I don't know if we're officially having a blizzard here, but it's snowing the wind is 35-50 mph and you can't see very well.

BTW the word blizzard was first used in my home town, Estherville, Iowa, by the then editor of the newspaper.

Or you can use one whole egg and a couple egg whites.  Tastes the same and cuts down fat and cholesterol considerably

What a mess at the schools while the parents collect the children.  Is that all levels? 

When we lived in Pennsylvania the elementary school would not let children leave with anyone but their parent without a signed note from the parent.  One stormy day my neighbor showed up at the door with my boys before I knew I should have picked them up.  The kids were in the same grades & one of our teachers was outside & let my friend take them.  Boy was I happy!

A dream I remember from my childhood:

Once upon a time, a brutish king and queen banned all color in their kingdom/queendom.  There were six children who could not stop living in color, so they were each encased in transparent bubbles, to contain their colors (one each for the primary and secondary colors, btw).  The children discovered that they could direct how and where their bubbles floated, and soon were crashing willy-nilly into the buildings and people and everything else that they could.  Color splattered everywhere, and the king and queen were unable to enforce their ban.

It was a very vivid dream - I must have been all of four or five when I dreamed it, and I remember it still.

And I have always dreamed in color.

I am. I like when they say "NO TRAVEL STAY HOME"  my response is "GREAT!" In the winter I bring work home. I rarely do it, but if there is a storm and I need to stay home, I can still get work done if I want to or if I need to do it before the roads clear.

Not sure what levels. The news said that it was fine at 1:30 PM but then the wind came up and the superintendant decided it wasn't safe even for town kids (versus country kids) to walk home from school

We had a pretty free day today in Austin, so we decided to go to the movies and see SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

We bought our tickets, went into the theater and were surprised...actually shocked to discover that they serve food in the theater...right during the movie. 

I'm not not talking about popcorn and cokes.  I'm talking about salads, hamburgers, steak sandwiches, etc.  And, the waiters keep serving right during the film, bringing the check 45 minutes before the picture ends.

I don't know about you, but when I go to a movie, I want to see the movie.  I don't want the guy next to me fiddling with his food...which might have garlic in it.

The upshot was that, before the movie started, we got a refund, then went out to look at our new house once more before we come home tomorrow.

I have not yet read the posts on the Golden Globes. But my 2 favorite moments last night were:

1. Tina Fey's speech. So funny. I wish more speeches could be funny.

2. Kate Winslet the 2nd time. So gracious. So elegant. What a fantastic speaker even when nervous and flustered. Loved it.

Um, I have to disagree with #2, DR Jennifer.  I would have expected so much more eloquence from someone like Winslet.  And I really don't understand all the emotion involved.  For one thing, she is a critics' darling who should be used to heaps of praise she's received over the years of her career and for another--it's just the Golden Globe. 

I adore Kate Winslet and I don't begrudge her double win at all, but I think she's too much of a veteran to fall apart over the Golden Globes.
As opposed to Bette Midler, who held up her two awards for The Rose at chest level and said "How do you like these Golden Globes!"

I'm doing a little experiment with my diet this week.  With WW you get 35 "bonus" points to use anytime during the week.  I haven't been using them and have been losing weight.  I decided to eat more this week, use at least some of the points and see what happens.  i'm hoping for good news

After all the talk here I had to find the the clip on YouTube.  I also compared her reaction, & speech, for her supporting actress win.  I found it obvious she was completely surprised to win best actress.  If not by her expression before the announcement, then by the simple the fact she had not prepared a speech.

I found her unrehearsed reaction & the delivery of her acceptance speech delightful. :)

I asked DR Druxy because Bryan always wanted us to go to a theater in Portland that had comfy seats & served pizza, beer & I don't know what else.  He never mentioned food was served during the movie.  I'm pretty sure he would have found that annoying.

The trick is to get that "cute guy" to carry her books for her!

Back from my lunch meeting with the head of the LACC Theatre Academy.  I wish I could say it's a done deal for Nudie Musical to be done there, but it isn't.  He's had to approach it a different way from what we'd originally thought, mostly because of what's happening in community colleges right now.  He's still feeling positive, however, and therefore so will I.  I know he'd really like for it to happen for many reasons, including that the department would keep all box-office monies, which they desperately need.   He'll also be getting me some dates so I can book the next LACCTAA events - I have three in mind, plus a fourth, if I can pull it off.

Owl and the Pussycat - I didn't appreciate that movie when I was  a child, but loved it when I caught up with it years later.

The night Keith told me he loved me was the night we saw THE OWL & THE PUSSYCAT with Bill Bixby.  I wish I had the ticket stub for that night.  That was in April, 1966. :)

Good Evening!

Christmas is put away.  Well, almost put away.  My dad went to a homeowners association meeting, and once he gets back, we'll place the various bins and boxes in the attic.

I was sort of surprised that my mom was not too "careful" putting away some of the ornaments.  She basically placed most of them in a single layer in a box, then covered them with a layer of paper towels, then placed the cover on the box.  I was actually prepared for a bit more wrapping-up of individual things, but I guess as long as the boxes don't get jostled around over the next 11 months, the decorations should be fine.

*And my parents already have their tree for next Christmas.  They bought a full-size, pre-lit artificial tree last week. ;)

Actually, backpacks don't have to be carried on one's back. And I hardly see anyone actually "wearing" a backpack using both straps anymore, usually it's just a one-sided deal lately.

*And there's something romantic about a young man having his own backpack slung over one shoulder, and another one over his other shoulder.

There's a mini-chain in DC of "Cinema and Drafthouses" - where they show movies - usually second-run - and serve food and beer during the movie.  However, they have actual tables set up, and with the way the levels are set up, the waiters are hardly ever in your sightlines.

But what DR Druxy described... Hmm... I probably would have walked out too.

I like it with milk and cheese. But if i'm watching my milk intake i've found/and read that you can substitute water. It works.

I used to add a splash of milk or water to my scrambling eggs, but eventually just stuck to "plain" eggs.  However, I do remember going through a "phase" of sorts where I researched whether it was better to add milk and/or water to scrambled eggs.  It was amazing to come across various recipes and theories basically forbidding the addition of either liquid.  Eventually, I found that if I gave the eggs a thorough beating/scrambling before I cooked them, and cooked them properly, they came out light and fluffy.  No additional "thinner" needed.

*The one trick/hint I did come across was that the eggs should form a nice even "drip/stream" when you pull the fork out of the mixture.  And, yes, it is possible to overbeat, over-aerate eggs for basic scrambled eggs.

I just had to switch to CNN since the NBC affiliate just switched back to "regular programming": the fourth hour of "The Today Show" with Kathie Lee and Hoda.  ::)

Well it is NBC. They don't like to cover what they don't like

I was chatting online with some friends in NYC at the time, and they said that they did not cut away at the top of the hour (in NYC).  I'm guessing since the 10:00am slot here is taken by "Regis and Kelly" - thus breaking up the four hours of "The Today Show" - they had more concerns about their syndication broadcast deal.  -And the news conference did end around 10:05, as it was.

Growing up our scrabbled eggs always had a little milk in them.  They were fluffy & lightly cooked.  Keith prefers his eggs well done & asked me to leave out the milk.  I still cook mine light though I rarely add milk anymore.  I only use a smidgen of olive oil in the pan, just enough to keep them from sticking.  Since I eat a lot of eggs I use the ones from vegie-fed chickens.

Oh...  As for the Topic of the Day...

There are a few I remember from my childhood and early teens - bad ones - and I've found that if I actively remember them again, I tend to re-dream them, so...

 :-X

*There was one recurring dream that actually made me not want to go to sleep since I didn't want to dream it again.  It made me dizzy in my dream, and dizzy when I woke up.

Otherwise, I don't think I've ever had a flying dream.  I don't think I've ever dreamt that my teeth were falling out.  However, I have had bunches of dreams where seemingly random people meet up and embark on some sort of adventure - either extraordinary or mundane.

Oh, and when I have "rehearsal dreams", then that's usually a sign that I should just concentrate more on the good than the bad.

Der Brucer has discovered 24, and is already showing signs of addiction.

I don't know why he didn't pick up on the series before, but the telemovie 24: Redemption caught his eye, and now he's watched the first four hours of the new season over the last couple of nights.

My hunch is, he'll want to collect and watch the DVDs of the previous seasons very soon, just so he'll know what's happened previously.

I'm doomed.

I enjoyed the 1935 MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION, especially Robert Taylor whose emotions were so much on the surface that they affected me deeply. I can see why my dad liked this version so much.

There was also an 82-minute documentary on Sirk. In German, he didn't talk at all about MAGNIFICENT OBSESSION but seemed to prize WRITTEN ON THE WIND as his best American film.

Then I watched the two hour '24' which after an interesting and fun but less than gripping two hours last night, ratcheted up the tension tonight to the levels that '24' usually achieves. Now, I'm back in the midst of the show in a big, big way.

The tone is certainly more consistent in the second one. I was just surprised how it didn't affect me emotionally as much as the 1935 version did.

We've had coffee with Julia Murney, but never the pancakes.

I just watched ABC's "Nightline" and they did a segment on the price of houses and what $100,000 can buy.  Has anyone ever been to www.zillow.com?  It's a site that estimates the value of houses.  Right now, it says that my condo is worth $15,000 less than what I paid for it.  BUT since I don't every plan to move, I don't really care.

Just had to share.
