Well, you've read the notes, the notes dropped some names, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently dropping something and it isn't names.

Adapted
The Sound Of Music  which was the the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th film I saw as a child. twice durig the roadshow engagement. It played at my beloved Seville Theater which the owner of the property let the theater fall apart due to neglect. One time i believe was in Cape Cod where the tale end of a hurricane was raining so badly that the streets were flooded when we came out of the theater.

Since the TSOM countless time and most recently two weeks at the hi-def presentstion.

Now the original.

Does "All That Jazz" count the score wasn't original.
An original I have to think about it.

And for the first time I actually know what the definition is.
And who said 50's television can't teach you anything?

BTW 50's tv were repeats in the 60's for me

Tuesday morning greetings!  I'm up early to get ready for my second-to-last grantwriters meeting as a board member.  Next year, I'll just be a chapter member and won't have responsibility for each month's program - whew!  On my way to Dayton I have to vote, pick up some library books, and pick up another board member whose car is in for repairs.  She's the one who followed the ambulance 13 weeks ago today and stayed with me in ER until Richard got there.  The least I can do is give her a ride.

DR Cillaliz, I've never had a cat before and I still don't find 3 cats a lot.  I would think that many people that have cats would have at least 2. So one more does not seem like a lot at all.

Good morning, all! I've cancelled all my appointments today except for the doctor at 3:30; I stood up this morning at 6am when the alarm went off and decided that being up and about all day wasn't a good idea and went back to bed for another hour. Since then, I've been taking care of emails and rescheduling my week. I'm sure the keg is healing nicely but I'd like to have the doctor's opinion over my own. While I am out, I will vote around 2:30 and then head to the doctor.

Speaking of the doctor, I got my official health insurance letter yesterday confirming my insurance is going up $110/month next year to $10,320 a year. Another reason to want a lot of people dead.

So, my day will be one of typing Victor Herbert lyrics, staying off my feet as much as possible and waiting for 2:30.

TOD:
Screen original: SINGING IN THE RAIN (almost ties with SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS)
Stage & Screen: THE MUSIC MAN

My two least favorite film adaptations of a stage show are THE SOUND OF MUSIC, which for me is about fifty-fifty, and the Keel-Grayson SHOW BOAT, which suffers from hyper-inflation and misses the point of the novel and the show.

We saw SWEET CHARITY in what had been the CINERAMA theater in SLC.  We had gone back there to visit friends over the summer (1969?) and my middle sister, who still lived there.  I was so blown away by the dance sequences, I will never forget it.  (Much the same way as I was when I saw my first Broadway show "on Broadway", PIPPIN, a few years later).

As I've told ad nauseum here, we saw SCROOGE at one of the downtown Seattle theaters.  My eldest sister had come home from Spokane for the holidays and took me.  We came out after the movie to one of the "best" snowstorms in my childhood memories--all of downtown Seattle was blanketed under several inches of freshly fallen snow.  It was really, really magical.

Original Screen Musical:
SINGING IN THE RAIN--I like how the creative team took a bunch of MGM trunk songs and evolved them into production numbers that thouroughly entertaining and smartly placed.  And like any great musical also has a good book, SITR has a terrific screenplay.

Runners Up:
42nd STREET
MEET ME IN ST LOUIS

Adapted Screen Musical:
THE MUSIC MAN -- Aside from its faithfulness to the stage show and the wonderful performances from every single cast member, the screenplay and direction is witty--this is a movie that could have easily been dumbed-down and overly sentimentalized.

I was looking for the shirt Keith got me after I got our 3rd & 4th cat. It was the same saying with a couch covered in cats.  Though I admit after having four cats I suggest to people they stop at three.

Try reminding the folks with four children you are rescuing, not adding to overpopulation ;)

I went today. It was around 40F. Brrr, that really is cold. I had 3 layers, tights, pants...  It is cold the first 5 minutes. But once i get around the lake it is perfect. So it's just 5 minutes of briskness.  I think I will go tomorrow. But thurs/fri are supposed to be rain. And sat/sun will be too cold.

I've been E and T again---I seem to be away quite a bit. We went to Athens, GA for the weekend to see my beloved musical hero, Van Dyke Parks, play at a music festival there. It was a great new venue, and we went with my best friend and Van Dyke's nephew, who is also a dear friend.

This was the end of the very first tour he's ever done. When we saw him in Ohio, he seemed very tired and hadn't hit his stride performing live yet, but the Athens show was fantastic.

I also highly recommend the group he's been touring with: CLARE AND THE REASONS. Fun, unusual music performed by talented musicians, most who live in Brooklyn. Very nice people, too!

We spent several hours with Van Dyke afterwards; he was in rare form and very funny!

One of my old Bi-Mart coworkers found me on Facebook. Hadn't seen her since the 1980s when she moved to Alaska and wondered what had become of her. And what is quite coincidental is that just the other day I was  thinking about her and wondering what she was doing now (and also trying to remember her last name).

Are we Republican yet?

I did my best to not make that happen...

Et moi aussi! Some idiot on local news said she was voting Republican since Obama had done nothing in two years and she wanted to see how the Republicans would do. I wanted to yell, you stupid fool, Obama's had two years to correct what the Republicans did in eight including an expensive and needless war! We have such short memories. I think it's the stupidity of the collective American populace that depresses me the most.

I saw THE SOUND OF MUSIC eleven times in theaters in its first run.  The first time I saw it was from the top row of the balcony of The Nixon Theater in downtown Pittsburgh.  I fell in love with it then, and my love and admiration for it has never died.  (Until I saw the restored LAWRENCE OF ARABIA on the big screen in all its 70mm glory, TSOM was my favorite film).

Original Film Musicals:
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
THE BANDWAGON
SWING TIME

Stage to Screen:
FINIAN'S RAINBOW
DREAMGIRLS
WEST SIDE STORY
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
MAMMA MIA!  (Guilty pleasure, to be sure).

I also love SCROOGE, WEST SIDE STORY, THE MUSIC MAN, CABARET, CHICAGO and SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS.

I would almost have to consider the movie-version of CABARET to be an original movie musical.  It really isn't the same as the Broadway musical.  Too bad.   I really liked the original stage musical.

I can't say that I'm happy with what's gone on in the administration for the past two years, but I know that I didn't like what went on for the eight years before that. As long as the Republicans are run by people like Sarah Palin, the religious right, bigots, hypocrites, and fools, I don't want them in power to threaten my existence, yours, freedom of speech, and equal rights.

DR Cillaliz, I've never had a cat before and I still don't find 3 cats a lot.  I would think that many people that have cats would have at least 2. So one more does not seem like a lot at all.

That's how I feel and having three is really quite wonderful.  Last night before going to bed we played "taking turns at playing with the cat dancer toy"  Ricky did better at it than I thought he would and Boo got to play a little.  this morning I woke up and there were 2 cats on the foot of bed.  Ricky on one side and Boo on the other.  Boo didn't hiss until it was clear I was awake.  Pretty funny.   Tonight when I came home and went to give Boo a kiss in the head I noticed the faint scent of sulfur....lol,  they are getting a long much better than I ever dreamed they would.

I was looking for the shirt Keith got me after I got our 3rd & 4th cat. It was the same saying with a couch covered in cats.  Though I admit after having four cats I suggest to people they stop at three.

Try reminding the folks with four children you are rescuing, not adding to overpopulation ;)

Good news about Callie.

I was thinking the other day how not having children and rescuing animals instead is really good for the environment.  Cats use a lot less energy over their life spans than children do ;)

I am very concerned about the retention vote for 3 of our state supreme court justices.  There has been a very well funded campaign to vote no to retention based on the ruling that made gay marriage legal in Iowa.  The late polls are leaning toward not retaining the judges.  We really don't know what's going to happen.  There are a total of 37 other judges up for retention (they are appointed and then we vote to retain every so often)  if they vote down the line...it will be chaos.

A 7th Releasing release of a Clear Lake Historical Prods. presentation. Produced by Will Hechter, Peter Miller. Executive producer, Hechter. Co-executive producers, Linda Selig, Lynda Walker. Directed by Peter Miller. Written by Ira Berkow.

With: Al Rosen, Sandy Koufax, Larry King, Maury Allen, Michael Paley, Peter Levine, Roger Kahn. Narrator: Dustin Hoffman.

Confronted with nine Jews, most people would probably guess "Supreme Court" rather than "ball club," but that's precisely the kind of bias that "Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story" successfully sends to the showers. Charting the presence of prominent Jewish major leaguers in every decade, their relationship to the world of big-time ball and the careers of such greats as Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax, helmer Peter Miller's historical docu strikes out a stadium-load of assumptions and, after a modest theatrical season, should enjoy a hearty afterlife in the educational and DVD divisions.
Although he covers much of the same ground (unavoidably) as does Aviva Kempner's 1998 "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," and includes info covered in TV docus about some of this film's other most famous subjects, Miller takes a much broader view of the relationship of Jews to the major leagues, stressing how important an embrace of baseball was to an embrace of America: Immigrant Jews at the turn of the 19th century knew it was through baseball that one became American. Eventually, baseball realized how important Jews could be to the sport: As Miller tells us, it wasn't benevolence but business that led the New York Giants' John McGraw to sign Andy Cohen, the first real Jewish star, a player who got Jews flocking to the Polo Grounds (and buying ballpark food like "ice cream Cohens").

It was Greenberg, though, who was the pivotal figure in Jewish baseball, and possibly "the most important American Jew" in history, according to one of Miller's commentators, Rabbi Michael Paley. This was not just because of his playing (Greenberg hit 58 home runs in 1938, was a five-time All-Star and two-time American League MVP). When the 6-foot-4-inch first-baseman refused to play on Yom Kippur -- just as the Detroit Tigers were closing in on the 1934 pennant -- it was "transformational," Paley says; baseball was important, but not that important.

With terrific narration by Dustin Hoffman, "Jews and Baseball" makes effective use of archival footage and interviews, the most spectacular of which is a lengthy sequence featuring the usually reclusive Koufax, who reminisces about his career and its relationship to his religion. It's debatable who is the most important Jew in the history of the major leagues; Koufax was a three-time Cy Young Award winner and the first pitcher to throw four no-hitters. He, too, declined to pitch on Yom Kippur, but in Koufax's case, the game in question was the first of the 1965 World Series.

Greenberg may have had a tougher time of it -- his era, the '30s, was a period of fierce bigotry and anti-Semitism, the weekly broadcasts of the scurrilous Father Coughlin and conflicted American opinion over the situation in Europe. But almost every player featured in "Jews and Baseball" had his difficulties (even Elliott Maddox, who was African-American and converted). Most also have good, if oft-told, stories: Moe Berg, who caught for several American League teams and became a lawyer in the off-season, supposedly spoke seven languages ("and couldn't hit in any of them," as the saying went) and became a spy for the OSS during World War II. Al Rosen was hard-slugging star for the Indians who retired rather than be traded (by Hank Greenberg, ironically, who had become Cleveland's general manager). Marv Rotblatt may have been the shortest pitcher (at just 5-foot-6) in Major League history.

Production values are very good, with clever music cues ("Short People" for Rotblatt), and a warm, intelligent text by the first-rate sportswriter Ira Berkow.

Camera (color/B&W), Antonio Rossi, Stephen McCarthy, Allen Moore; editor, Amy Linton; music, Michael Roth; sound, Miller; associate producers, Caroline Berler, Linton, Anne-Marie Smith. Reviewed on DVD, New York, Oct. 27, 2010. (In Jerusalem, San Francisco Jewish film festivals.) Running time: 90 MIN.

QUOTE:

Shannon Tavarez was a Broadway star at 11, playing the Young Nala in the musical "The Lion King," but her greatest legacy may be the 10,000 people she inspired to become potential bone marrow donors.

Tavarez, a Queens native, was forced to quit the show in April after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. Her doctors were unable to find a bone marrow transplant match for the young actress, who was black and Hispanic. Only about 3 percent of registered bone marrow donors are multiple race, according to the nonprofit National Bone Marrow Program.

Tavarez died Monday at the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park.

"What a loss. There are no words to describe it," said her oncologist at Cohen Children's, Dr. Lawrence Wolfe. "All children are precious, but she was a performer and she performed all the time, and gave much more than she ever took."

Shannon's search for a donor touched fellow cast members, who held bone marrow donor registration drives for her in Manhattan. Another was held in Port Jefferson for her and another leukemia sufferer. Singers Alicia Keys and Rihanna joined in the donor search, praising the young actress for her courage.

Randy Donaldson, a producer and former cast member in "The Lion King" touring company, was among about 400 people who last July got their cheeks swabbed at St. Malachy's The Actors' Chapel in Manhattan to see if they were possible donors.

It's kind of a joke.  My mom takes notes on the first night when they dance. She decides what she likes and keeps track of the judges scores and decides who she wants to go home.   She'll call me and say "Now I can't watch tonight...be sure and take notes"

Think I'm going to be up late. So far the three Iowa SCT Justices are losing retention over the gay marriage decision. I'm really concerned because my former co-worker and the first judge here to grant a divorce to a couple living in Iowa who had a civil union from Vermont is also losing retention at the moment.  This does not look good, but there are still a lot of votes to be counted

It's looking better for my friend, still lots out but at least the yesses are winning for him.  Unless something really changes, looks like all 3 IA Supreme court  justices are gone over the decision

It's amazing how quickly the election results come in.

We had a really fun rehearsal, then a singer auditioned for one of our upcoming shows, then The Singer came and we ran through more songs and are getting close to finalizing the list.  Then The Singer and I went out for dinner at the Studio Cafe - a totally gross but yummilicious meal consisting of wings and nachos.  Since we split everything right down the line I'm hoping that wasn't too crazy.  Now I'll check out some new Blu and Ray transfers, as I won't have time for a full motion picture viewing.  Also found out that we are VERY light in attendance tomorrow (a dinner party of five cancelled today - how annoying is THAT).

What a bunch of idiots.  They voted out three Iowa Supreme Court Justices and voted not to have a constitutional convention.  The goofy part of that is, the law won't change, just three new justices and three more people out of work.  If they really wanted to change the law, they need a constitutional convention.   I'm glad that wasn't approved, but this is the most absurd thing I've ever seen

Something similar happened here in Olympia.  There was a push to have a new library on the west side of Olympia.  There were two initiatives...one to create a special taxing district and another one to actually raise the money for the library.  They voted to create the special taxing district but NOT to raise the money to fund the library.  People just didn't understand what they were voting for.

The problem is you can't just start getting rid of judges because you don't like one decision they make.  That undermines our whole system of government and has really long term ramifications. If the judges are truly unfit for office, then you vote not to retain.  This was a vote against their decision that our equal protection clause covers gay marriage.  It was blatant intimidation of judges.  It's outrageous.

Of course, only 25% of the precincts are reporting so far...

And earlier, they were calling races with only 10% of the votes tallied.  -Can someone please tell me how this works?  I know that early poll results can reflect the eventual outcome, but, still... ??? ??? ???

If someone is winning whom the pollsters want to win, they quickly claim a victory to prevent potential voters from going to the polls, thinking the race already lost for their own candidate.

That's why somepeople weren't declared winners until after 90% had been counted, and othere were declared winners after 10%.

In regards to today's political discussions, well... Click below:

I still don't understand how someone aged 19-26 can be considered a child - that's ridiculous.  I wonder...if they're married with kids, do their spouse and kiddies get insurance from the grandparents, too?

That's why people should have to have an IQ above a certain level before they're allowed to vote.
