Good morning, various and sundried Dear Readers!

Yesterday was a lovely day filled with family, food, and enjoying a good book on the beach.

One of my favorite things about visiting the beach is watching Zach the Wonderdog run free on the beach, chasing the sandpipers.

TOD

Although not from the Golden Age of TV which I believe are the 1950's

I would have loved to have been at the series finales of The Mary Tyler Show and Newhart

The game show would have been the $10,000 (& all the other $ amounts) Pyramid

I just remember what show from the 50's I would like to have been at. The I Love Lucy episode where she dances with eggs in her blouse. I had read that the audience laughed so much and so long that the laughter had to be edited out(!) of the final show.

My script writing program has part of it package where it can read what has been written and you can apply both male and female voices of all kinds to your characters. It has been amazingly helpful in hearing how the dialogue sounds and  making the changes so it will sound better.

I am supposed to have my next read through on Saturday.

Good morning, all! Last night I slept from around 10 pm to 4:30 this morning, at which point I needed to take more meds. I slept very fitfully until I thought genug ist genug around 7:45.  I'm working up my courage to make the plunge and book the train and a hotel room for August 12 in DC. I'm not keen on going, although I am very keen on hearing the orchestra reading and seeing my colleagues on the project.

Today, I believe I will work on Mr Loesser's third act of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA. Perhaps by the end of the day I will have the final round of scores for LIFE BEGINS . . .

If I could be on any set of a tv show, it would be for either the first broadcast of Marty Martin's PETER PAN or Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA with Julie Andrews.

Actually, Harvey isn't a rabbit; he's a pookah.

Alas, no Shoo-Fly Pie.  I finished up early yesterday, but not early enough to make a run to one of the Amish stores before heading back to the train station.  There are a couple of Amish goods stands at some of the green markets around town, so I can satisfy my craving that way.  Or I could make my own.  Hmm...

And I don't recall driving by Dutch Haven.  Then again, I could have been distracted by all the horses and buggies.

Well... I have a couple of errands to accomplish this morning - especially since it's now an hour earlier than I thought it was originally.  And I'm thinking I may try to spend as much of the day out and about as possible.  Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I'd end up cocooning here in my apartment all day.

I was walking through the parking lot yesterday while wearing my "Murder At the Grove"  T-shirt.  Someone asked me what it was for, so I briefly told them.  I couldn't think of the name of the new book since I was thinking more about the fact that I was standing in the parking lot in 115 degree heat burning up, so all I could think of for the new book was "Trixie Belden and the Porn King."

DR Ben, I apologize for my going off the deep end yesterday about reality shows. I love you dearly and would not ever want to offend you.

However, I will say that I agreed with what DR Jennifer said, in that all "reality shows" or "competition shows" are not created equal...this genre covers such a wide variety of programming, pretty much any type of show that uses your average Joe or Jane, rather then paid actors, to entertain.

Mark picked up Klaus in Denver yesterday.

Totally would have LOVED being on the set of "Buffy, the Vampire Slayer".  Would love to have appeared as a vampire whom Buffy staked!  LOL!

As for game show, I blush to admit it, but I think I'd have to say "Treasure Hunt" (with Jan Murray).  I loved that show and thought most of the contestants were idiots because they didn't seem to "get" it.  They had special shows with just kids playing...and they were often more interesting as players than the adults, and the prizes were a bit cooler (to my young mind at that time).

Michael, I accept your apology, although none is needed. I know you didn't mean to offend me in any way.

I just feel very strongly about the vile nature of many of the "contestants" who appear on, as I refer to them, the hard core reality programs.

I guess I need to distinguish between the different kinds of reality programming. I have no animosity toward things like Food Network's Next Great Star or whatever it's called or other shows that don't purposely demean and humiliate those that choose to participate. Getting a pie in the face on a game show (in the 50s or 60s) is not the same as sitting with sub-human cretins for 10 weeks in a locked house (or on a remote island) while everyone tries to outmaneuver each other. These people seem to have no respect for anything or anyone except "the game". Letting a man burn in a fire is indefensible. I will not ever watch a show like that and it saddens me that this kind of programming is so popular and respected.

And now I'll get off my soapbox.

Mikey, I think you're a wonderful man and you should know that none of this is directed at you. You have enough tormentors on this site, I won't add to the mix ;)

Is anyone watching HGTV's "Design Star"?  I didn't know it was on, but caught this past Sunday's episode.  It's obviously early in the competition, but I got the feeling from some of Vern's comments that a couple of shows had already aired.

I love the judges -- in addition to Vern Yip there is Genevieve Gorder and the sensational Candice Olson.

A few of the contestants are wonderful!

MBarnum:   To answer your question from yesterday about "Big Brother 11", I am watching this season, but not as intensely as previous seasons.  I OD'd on Season 6....subscribed to the live feeds and spent hours watching the goings-on in the house.  I even took a day off when Kayser returned to the house to see what would happen.

No more.

I watch every Sunday and Thursday show for sure, but I record the Tuesday show and just skim through it.  By the time that show airs, I've already learned what they reveal courtesy of Dingo's Hamsterwatch.   The problem I have with that night and, for the most part, Sunday night is that CBS has gotten into an editing rut with the show.   Anyone following the daily goings-on soon learns that the shows that air between Thursday's live shows are out of sequence and "old news" to them.

My cousin was one of the electricians on MURDER SHE WROTE, so I could have gotten onto that, but didn't--though I enjoyed watching the show. Was there one I'd liked to have been on, but wasn't? Yes, I would have liked to been on THE WIZARD OF OZ.  Since it was made in 1939 and I wasn't born until 1949, that would have been a bit tricky. Oddish.  And strange.  VERY strange.

Lots of communications between our purchasing department and our auditor-controller agency about a policy the latter seems to have reneged on that MAY result in my having to redo about 10 purchase order contracts that we RUSHED to do before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th).

Sigh.

This is a difficult one...I can think of lots of shows I would like to have seen taped/filmed.  Any ALL IN THE FAMILY or MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW in their initial seasons.  I LOVE LUCY (I'm thinking the grape-stomping episode.)  THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW, SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE during the first five years...

But I think I'm going to settle on the first live broadcast of AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS.

As for game shows, I guess I would pick either MATCH GAME '73 for the fun of it or SPLIT SECOND (the quiz show in which the winner got to try to start one of five automobiles at the end of the show.)

At home last night my internet connectivity was extremely spotty.  I had thought that it was a Comcast problem but I asked my neighbor lady about it this morning and she said she had no problems at all, so now I have to check my router and modem when I get home tonight.

And then I get into the office this morning to find that our entire network is down.  It's finally come back up but the whole morning was pretty much a washout, productivity-wise.

Two other game shows that I would like to have been a contestant on...THE NEWLY WED GAME (but only when Tom Sellek was up for grabs)...and TIC TAC DOUGH, because I was always good at getting the answers correct on that show.

DR Ben....just so you know...there are/have been some really nice people on Big Brother and Survivor over the years....and the best part is that most often the nice ones win and are always the audience favorites.

Dr. Will?

Maggie?

Evel Dick?

Mike "Boogie"?

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!

LOL

Of course, this is season 11 and those are only 4 of the winners...the other 6 were just fine!  (My favorite remains Season 1's Eddie).

Gotta go back to work, just wanted to share the story of Jake the dog.  He was the headline story yesterday (never mind that North High won the state baseball tournament for the first time ever).  Someone did the Obama poster graphic of Jake with "Save Jake"   It was above and below the fold

Congrats BK - I don't know how to take a screen shot

Center the image on your monitor...you can enlarge the view if you like....hold down the Control Key and press the "PrtScrn/SysReq" key (it's generally on the top row of the keyboard on the far right side beside the Pause/Break key.

If you have a photoshop application in your programs, open it, select File/New...and then click Control-V.  The image should appear on the blank screen.  There you can crop it and size it.  Generally, the width needs to be between 400 and 500.  The guidelines here say no greater than 400, but the one I posted for BK is 450 wide.  Save it as a .jpg file in your photos folder.  And then you can post it to HHW.com.

I thought of DR Pogue this week as I made my way through the old British series THE RIVALS OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.  Nothing earth shattering, but it's fun to see what contemporaries of Doyle were doing in this idiom.

Then I watched my work project for today - MY COUSIN VINNY. An above average comedy (compared to the comedies I've seen lately, it's a masterpiece) and I enjoyed seeing it again.

Blu-ray is wonderfully sharp but contrast seemed a little off from time to time. Wonderful DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround track.

You know what the most disturbing thing about Lost, Season Three is?  Terry O'Quinn's new upper teeth.  So weird, and like all people who have a complete new set put in, his lips fit around them in a way they didn't used to.  It took me only about two scenes to figure out why he looked a little different.

Since the Vixter had been invited out to dinner , Vixdad and I treated ourselves to dinner at Cheeburger, Cheeburger - I had  'the Beginner" their smallest burger with swiss cheese and roasted red peppers and coleslaw on the side - Vixdad had a larger burger with cheddar, tomato, lettuce,. catsup, mustard, mayo, onion  and we split a half order of onion rings and fries ansd still brought half of that home  - and I had a chocolate cherry shake

In other news...

I had to head over to Hoboken to run an errand this morning.  After said errand was done, I decided to check out the Hudson River WaterfrontWalkway.  Well, I tried to at least.  As I was walking along the Hoboken waterfront, I noticed lots of signs for the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.  I could have headed north to Weehawken or south to Jersey City.  I decided to head south since I could then grab the PATH train or a ferry back to Manhattan from Jersey City.  So...

I followed the signs which ended up leading me through the Hoboken terminal/train station which was very quaint and cute - and had one of the most unique food courts I've ever encountered (a hot dog stand, a pizza stand, a Thai food stand and a dive bar).  I kept following the signs - some of which I noticed had bits of masking tape attached to them.  I was "led" around the tracks to an area on the other side of the station.  And then I was "led" to a fence.  Apparently, the Hudson River Walkway is not finished yet, and those masking taped signs were very recently put up.  So, I had to turn around... And take the PATH train back from there in Manhattan.

Ah, well... But it does like it will be quite a nice walk once the project is finished.

Once I was back on the other side of the river, I lunched at Baoguette (http://www.baoguette.com), then took a walk up Hudson River Park.  During that walk, I came across this:

"I can sail without wind, I can row without oars, but I cannot part from my friend without tears."

It is an AIDS Memorial that was dedicated just last December 1 (2008), World AIDS Day.

Watching more Lost episodes.  Some really good ones on this third disc - until now - and now I'm watching what is up till this point the worst episode of the series and one to rival the worst of Alias on one of their bad days.  Two new characters, part of the crash, but we've never really seen them before (well, briefly - they were introduced early in season three, but they didn't register at all), have an entire episode devoted to them - this is called VAMPING, since the end of the previous episode had one of those "surprises" and I guess they weren't quite ready to deal with it.   I did a little Internet research and apparently this episode was despised by many of the show's most fanatical fans.

BK--if you ever deign to delve into the bounteous extras, you'll discover that Nikki and Paulo were indeed planned to be relatively major characters at one point.

Goodnight.
