What kinds of highlights have I had this year...

It's been the first year I've ever spent where I've been able to watch the seasons change.  Before, in SoCal, changing seasons meant switching from Lawrey's Lemon Pepper to something by Mrs. Dash.  Here, in Delaware, it means the weather changes.

I've had my first experience with retail sales, which was interesting.

And I've met several of our H/Ks, including a jaunt up to a theater near Philadelphia to see and hear our PennyO perform her Jewish Thighs On Broadway, two trips to Washington D. C. to meet with our Jose when he played keyboards for Children of Eden and Hallelujah Baby!, and a couple of trips to NYC, once to partake in theater and dine with our Jenny (who is constantly IMing her favorite buddy der B), and most recently to hear our esteemed BK read from Writers Block and meet with our Elmore, Ben, Elan and his wife, and PennyO once more, and of course the Sexiest Man on Earth.

And I've learned how to cook duck breasts, and how to make venison chili.

I have been a busy lad, haven't I!

I lvoe cheesy potatoes as well.  NOT scalloped potatoes, no.  Cheesy potatoes, yes!

Hmmmmmmmm highlights....hmmmmmmmmmmm......there have been a few....and some the opposite as well, but concentrating on the former!

Directing LOVING LUCY at the Phoenix and getting to know Megan, my star, and playwright Phillip blueowl Hooser.

Playing the title role in Larry Shue's THE NERD.

Enjoying a better working relationship with some of my co-workers in our theatre group - although this is a two way street, so it hasn't always been successful....LOL.

Starting to paint with acrylics and doing a couple of nice paintings that I like.

Learning to do the website of our theatre group.  Whew!

That's about it.  Now if I can just come up with a job in the next few weeks, it will be GREAT!

Oh and of course, WRITER'S BLOCK and KRITZER TIME.

And having two DVD reviews published in SCARLET STREET!

A scene from the original version of The Horror of Beach Party

Some dialogue from the original

Dr. Gavin: Of course! This creature needs the ordinary necessities of human life - proteins, fats, sugars and so forth. But since his organs are so decomposed it needs the only food which can keep it alive.

Hank Green: Blood?

Dr. Gavin: Human blood. If a human body - a drowned person - were attacked by tiny sea plants which became parasites and completely infiltrated that human body before it had a chance to decompse, would the body be considered dead or alive?

Hank Green: Dead?

Dr. Gavin: No - it's still alive. But it's changed into a - well, is it a plant or an animal?

Hank Green: It's both?

Dr. Gavin: It's a giant protozoa!

Good morning, all!  It's a very chilly morning, and I'm waiting for the coffee to wake me up.  It's just past 8 am, and I'm trying to organize my day.  First, the post office to mail an insurance premium and four Christmas CDs to 4 DRs who asked for them.  Then, the recording office, to continie Act Two of BABES IN TOYLAND, which, like "Ol' Man River," keeps rollin' along.

Today's Topic:
WHERE'S CHARLEY? at Goodspeed
THE MICKEY & JUDY SHOW, San Diego Symphony
Meeting a lot of my HHW friends in person this year:  Danise, Penny O, Jane, TD, Michael Shayne, Ben and Anthony, Noel, S Woody White and Der Brucer, Elan, Jose.
Seeing Dear Friend BK for the first time in several years
Any time I spend with my goddaughter
Living through the past 6 months!

My personal highlight of 2004 is that, after an intensive search caused by our relocation to Rochester, I began what is -- more often than not -- a pretty wonderful job managing a performing arts series at SUNY Brockport.

My anticipated personal highlight (of at least the first month) of 2005 will be seeing my DB/DR Jay and our DM (Dear Mother) for a few days, in a couple of weeks.

Last night, DR Dan (the Man) wrote to DR MBarnum about the DVD format wars brewing:

"Before you do buy a new DVD, DR MB, I would suggest you do some research on the upcoming DVD format war that's brewing.  From what I read recently, there are two new formats about to be released on the market:  DVD Blue and HD DVD.  And while most of the major studios are backing the HD DVD format, Disney has announced that they will begin releasing on the DVD Blue format later next year.

If I understand correctly, these new formats will require new DVD players.  I haven't looked into this myself, yet.  I hope that any new players that come out this year will be manufactured to play both formats (along with the original format we already have.)"

No need to worry if you don't have a high definition set. These are only high definition DVDs which won't come to market until late 2005 or 2006, and studios aren't going to stop producing standard definition DVDs for a long time.

The new high definition players will play all of the old standard definition DVDs. Which high definition format will win out will be anyone's guess, but I don't plan on investing in either until one high definition format becomes the norm. With the upconversion that HDTVs now perform, my DVDs look like high definition right now to my eyes.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CYRANO DE BERGERAC!

TOD, oh my, it's been one helluva year!
Got Dad through his congestive heart failure.
Got Mum through her final surgeries - removal of all remnants of the bone immobilizer and the final solution of the steel rod from thigh to ankle, leaving her straight-legged, but, mobile.
Planning and giving the 50th (Golden) Anniversary Party for the folks.
Monster Bash 2004, where I not only got to meet Forrest J. Ackerman for the first time, but met Aussie Alex Paige and found a true soul mate.
Birthday-ing in the Big Apple with DR Michael Shayne. Seeing WICKED.  Seeing Hugh Jackman as THE BOY FROM OZ.  Meeting DRs Ben and elmoore3003.  Seeing old friends, such as Matt Stocke (CMU grad, same class as Patrick Wilson) of TBfO as well as THE FULL MONTY.
Performing in Open Stage's PLAY-IN-A-DAY experiment.
Thanksgiving in NYC with Alex.  Seeing WICKED.  Seeing PACIFIC OVERTURES.  Dining with DR elmoore3003.
Renewing my acquaintance with the work of Ella Fitzgerald.
Listening to Renee Geyer, Joe Cocker and Van Morrison and trying to appreciate them all.  Two out of three ain't bad.

My highlights for the year are pretty brief:

My July trip to NYC seeing WICKED, AVENUE Q, and Hugh Jackman's stupendous performance in THE BOY FROM OZ (some of the other male eye candy in the show was also pretty special).

Getting the role of Father Virgil in NUNCRACKERS and playing it to enthusiastic audiences. Only at the conclusions of AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND, A CHORUS LINE, and FOREVER PLAID did I feel the same kind of rush of exhilaration that I felt at the end of every performance of NUNCRACKERS.

That's good news.  I know quite a few family members and friends who got brand spankin' new DVD players for Christmas and, based on what I had read, I thought that they would all be winding up on the junk pile in a year or two.

In the coming year, I want to explore ways to convert my somewhat large VHS collection to DVD.  This might be as simple as installing a DVD burner into my desktop PC and swapping for a larger hard drive.  Or it may even be simpler to purchase a TIVO with a built in DVD recorder.  I shall see...

Lovely highlights all - now we need more from other errant and truant dear readers.

We are having a real rainstorm here, complete with thunder.  This one is so severe (it's been raining non-stop since nine o'clock last night, that I have discovered a small leak in the roof.  I've put down towels which will hopefully do the trick, and I'll be calling about it later, and hopefully we'll get it fixed up soon.  Once we do, of course, it will not rain again for six months.

I'm sorry to hear about your leaky roof. I hope it is a cheap & easy repair.  We have a leaky basement, and since we're here on Long Island where it rains only slightly less than it does in Seattle,  we spend too many days with rising damp

Well, the wonderful news about leasing rather than owning is that no matter what the ease or cost of the repair, I don't have to worry about it.

For your entertainment:

Went to adjust my bill at the big department store that I've had the "issues" with.  Anyhow I could tell this was NOT going to be fun as soon as the salesperson opened her mouth.

She was not nice and she was not interested in helping me.

Anyhow she said that since it was 16 days instead of 14 days that I could not have my bill adjusted and then she acted like she was done with me.  I asked her to get her manager.  So what does she do but call him and then hang up.

Apparently he agreed with her.

I told her to get her manager now.

So she did, and as she did this, I spoke to the other salesgirl and said, "this is ridiculous, I can return this item at any time, read the back.  just return it and i'll buy it again.".

Just as i'm saying this the manager comes and is really nice and says of course i can do that.  I told him the other girl was really rude and he apologized.

The thing I don't get is why do I have to be the one to come up with the solutions.  I'm sure they could have figured out themselves what to do.

Btw, there was no way I was leaving there without the adjustment! :)

Now, might I just ask where in tarnation IS everyone?

Maybe they're all out sledding and drinking wonderful hot chocolate made with Cadbury's chocolate and real milk, and laced with Godiva chocolate liquer

that's where I'd like to be instead of sitting in this office lookinghout on this sunny, windless landscape. perfect for sledding

Additton to year's highlights, family sledding with DH & Vixter at  "Hoyt's Farm"
and  sledding with  the Vixter at Sunken Meadow Beach, on the north shore of Long Island

and drinking wonderful hot chocolate made with Cadbury's chocolate and real milk, and laced with Godiva chocolate liquer afterwards (well not the Vixter naturally, she had to settle for mini marshmallows)

TOD - Our family highlight of 2004 was our son's graduation in the top 5% from the high school attended by his paternal grandparents, father, 2 uncles, and HHW's very own Elmore!  He's now a freshman in the honors program at the University of Cincinnati, where he made the Dean's List in his first quarter.  We're very proud of him!

Personally, I started working full time at the end of January (most days I consider this a good thing...).  My favorite part of my job is the outreach I do to the local nonprofit community and the professional development available to me from the Foundation Center.  The latter has enabled me to travel to Columbus, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and, best of all, to NYC for a week in October.  That's when Elmore introduced me to this lively group and becoming involved online is certainly a 2004 highlight.

I concur that the NW HHW get-together was great!  We need to do it again, soon (maybe if/when BK comes up here for a book-reading/signing).

In family mode, getting to and from Florida safely for a great week in Orlando with the kids was a highlight, though I am still recovering from riding Mission Space.    :P  (They're missing a major market by not having "I survived Mission Space and all I got was this barf bag" engraved barf bags available).

On a personal level, seeing the fruition of long years of tracking down the truth about Frances Farmer.  Thousands of people now have read my web article, I've been contacted by everyone from Leonard Maltin to a Peabody award winning documentarian, not to mention virtually daily emails from folk all over the world.  It's been really heartwarming.

Good Afternoon!

Boy, did I overlsleep today!  And it wasn't even a matter of sleeping in, I just plaing overslept.  I am feeling a little achy, and I'm hoping that's just from the extra time in the bed and not from something else.  -I may just make a run to the drugstore for some of that oscillococcinum (sp?) stuff.  In any case...

Highlights of 2004 - that I can remember right now:

Two wonderful trips to NYC with my friend, Steve.  One in January, one in November.  We now have a favorite restaurant, Becco, and we found that the ginger snaps from Amy's Breads are addictive.  We saw a bunch of shows between the two trips: Urinetown, Avenue Q, Caroline, or Change, Wicked, Hairspray, Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance, and The Producers - and all from house seats too!  We also got to sup with DRs elmore and Ben, as well as meeting and knoshing with Dr PennyO.  And one of these days, I'll get some of those trip photos posted.  Most importantly, it's been wonderful being able to spend time with Steve.  Even though we are "technically apart", we're still very close, and like spending time in each other's company.

I was also able to catch Wonderful Town (yes, Donna Murphy was in that night) and Gypsy (yes, Bernadette Peters was in that night), and I had a wonderful time at both shows.

The whole Children of Eden experience.  It was great working with all the Ford's Theatre folks again, and the cast and crew of that show were top-notch - and great to hang out with.  Of course, there were those 40 hours of keyboard programming, but even those were made fun, at least bearable, since my conductor, Brad, was also working on his keyboard at the same time.  -And we didn't notice any ghosts in Ford's the one night we did the all-nighter.

...And meeting DRs SWW and DerB during the run of that show was most definitely a highlight.  Ah, the roses!

I LOVED this ride.  DH, Vixter & I were able to preview this ride before it was open to the public and we rode it twice in succession (no lines in previews!!) I wanted to do it all day long, that sensation of weightlessness albeit shortlived , was fantastic.  I must admit tho',  DH's opinion was closer to yours!!

...and then came What If?...

"Can you come out tomorrow?"

Well, that was a Wednesday, and I flew out Thursday morning.  -Yes, I could come out "tomorrow"!

There were so many moments of serendipity with this whole experience...

-Bemoaning - right here on HHW - my upcoming lack of work... and then BINGO!

-Being able to stay with my, Chris, in Los Feliz for a few weeks.  -And then eventually getting him involved in the project by doing the "Coming Attractions" audio.  The late night hours of fun we had going through foley sound effects to find just the right gun-click and "bouquet throw".  And just being able to spend more time with Chris was just plain wonderful.

-Having DR Jay open his house to me too.  And for playing chauffeur - I still feel guilty for asking him to take the bridge that one night, and then finding that he had a tire blow out.  For playing tour guide - what a fount of knowledge of all things LA.  For playing movie guide - at least he had the good sense not to see "The Brown Bunny".  For playing culinary guide - oh, the food, the Food!  For playing cultural guide - the concerts, the shows, the museums... the piano bars.  It was all just too too.  We had met once last year when I was in LA, but this time round it was also great to make a new friend in the process.  Thank You, Jay.

-All the DRs and friends and contacts who helped me and BK procure music and charts for the show including DR Matthew, Rick at Hollywood Sheet Music, and Michael Lavine in NYC.  -And I guess I better thank FedEx, USPS Priority and Overnight, and the inventors of the cell phone and fax machine too!  :)

-All the friends old and new I met while I was out in LA.  Some of whom I was literally running into while walking down the street!

-The City of LA.  Especially it's public transportation system.  It served me well.

-The cast: Tammy, Ryan, Alet, Paul and Susanne.  What a true pleasure and privilege to work with them.

-An additional mention for Tammy who as producer had to deal with so much stuff(!) - even stuff from myself and BK.  ;)  I don't know how she did it all.

-Last, but certainly not least, I have to thank BK.  He took a chance.  He trusted me.  He entrusted me.  Truly an honor.

Other random highlights...

Subbing in for Mamma Mia! and The Producers on the road.

Playing for A Chorus Line in Houston at Theatre Under the Stars.  It was great working with Baayork Lee again.

And Hallelujah, Baby! - warts and all - is turning into a highlight.

WOW!  I guess I did work quite a bit this past year after all!

And the most recent and most important highlight of 2004 has been having my father have a successful surgery for prostate cancer, and then coming home from the hospital - albeit twice - for some rest and recovery at home.  He's making a speedy recovery, and even those late night karaoke sessions are (almost) bearable...

The whole "cancer" thing with my father has truly affected me in a lot of ways - and probably in more ways then I'll ever truly know.  I've mentioned before here on this site that when it comes to health matters, my parents tend to be "quiet" - I still don't think I've ever heard my Mom or my Dad say the word "cancer".  In fact, the only time I did hear the word cancer was when my brother, Jay, let it slip when he "accidentally" told me back in September.  And, in the realm of "timing is everything", I first heard that news two hours before the final Thursday performance of What If?.  It truly made my last few days in LA "interesting" to say the least.  But the show must go on, and it did.

Now that I think of it, I think my whole "make the move to NYC" mindset is a result of my Dad's cancer scare.  We never know what the future holds for us, and there is truly no time like the present.  Carpe diem!

But I'm very glad that I'm also back up Arena Stage for Hallelujah, Baby! which is allowing me to spend some more time with my family, and play "day nurse" as it were too for my father right now.  Originally, there was not going to be an additional keyboard in the pit, but then I got the call while I was out in LA in August to come on board.  It truly is amazing how things work out and fit together.

Yes, I'll add the whole wacky What If show to my highlights.  Looking back on it, we were truly insane - to keep losing the rights to shows, and then to just up and say, "We'll just do a revue" when there was no revue to do.  And five weeks later to open a revue and then actually be a hit with both critics and audiences was something totally unexpected and amazing.  It had been quite some time since I'd directed for the stage and I found the experience so gratifying that I'm actively looking for other projects to direct.  I had to ride herd pretty toughly a few times, but that was only because I knew we had a short period of time to do a lot of intensive work.  Everyone pulled through and we did it.

As to the Horror of Party Beach songs - there are a lot of places notated for songs in the script, but these are going to be real songs by up-and-coming hot bands, just like beach party movies of old.  The only thing I've written, song-wise, is some faux rap lyrics for a young white character I created.

Personal highlight was having my HERCULES mini-series, filmed, being the only writer on it which will mean sole credit, and having two strong and smart executives on it who did their utmost in protecting the script.  It will air during sweeps week of May 2005.

Having a book dedicated to me and The Lovely wife by Harlan Ellison was quite a thrill.

And appearing in the book, A POUND OF PAPER, by John Baxter, along with a lot of other well-known writers and book collectors, responding to the question:  "If your house caught on fire, what book would you save?"

Going back to Dallas, where I lived for about four years early in my acting career, to speak to the Dallas Screenwriters Association, and to visit old haunts was great fun.

It was a privilege to be in the glittering first-night crowd of What If, getting to see the Schmidt/Jones tribute in Pasadena, and travelling to merrie ole London once more for a great round of theatre-going.

I also have a few leaks in my home environment. The roof is new, so that was fine, but the windows are originals from the Stone Age or the twenties. Some of them leaked a bit.

Highlights of 2004:

My trip to Budapest and Rome. Being in Budapest for the first time for and extended period was wonderful. And staying with DD in HER apartment on the very street where my grandfather had owned a store before the war, was a glorious experience.
The trip to the Focolare Media conference in Rome, the people I met there, the talk I gave and the response... And seeing Rome for the first time! Wow!

I was about to talk about my experience of seeing WHAT IF 5 times, but have been interrupted. More later.

(THERE IS A SLIGHT WRITER'S BLOCK SPOILER BELOW - IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK - PLEASE BEWARE - BK)

Hello all.... the DP and I are back from the Land of Disney.  I won't get into the trip as it was VERY crowded and a little disheartening for this Disneyland fanatic.  I knew it would be crowded, but what I didn't expect was the rude people in the crowds.  It seemed very wrong to me, especially in Disneyland.  What's also sad is that Disneyland is PACKED with people and Disney's California Adventure isn't even close to being full.

One of the things I did whilst braving the crowds was read (and finish) "Writers Block".  I loved the first half, but it took me to the very end to understand the last half.  The going from present time, back to the story, and then the end.  I won't say anymore for fear of giving anything away.  It was quite confusing.

I did get a lot of the reference's to people, but I was wondering if there are others I didn't get and if someone wanted to enlighten me with a "Writers Block" crib sheet, it would be rather cool.  I'm curious to know if this was based AT ALL on a real show?

One of the differences we noticed when we did Disneyland and California Adventure two (three?) years ago is the vast difference in planning the public throughways at the two parks, no doubt based on improved thinking from 1955 to whenever California Adventure opened.  Disneyland's walkways are, for the most part, rather narrow, whereas California Adventure had huge open spaces between the attractions.

DR Matthew, did you actually go to California Adventure?

If so, that ought to answer your question.  ;)  I was never so disappointed by a Disney product as that entire park.

Just read that Susan Sontag has died. Such a wonderful essayist. And she delved into such a wide range of topics. "Illness as Metaphor" I want to read again. Ditto "Against Interpretation." Actually, I should reread all her stuff. So many books, so little time...

To briefly get back to the hightlights of the year...
As I was starting to say in my earlier Highllights post, I loved seeing WHAT IF? a number of times, seeing it grow, shift, change.

Meeting some of the terrific people at HHW has also been a highlight. Some in person, some friendships blossoming online. No need for a list. You know who you are.

Some of the writing I did this year was really satisfying - so that certainly was a highlight.

More later...

Matthew, the musical in Writer's Block isn't based on anything but what a typical musical of the era would have been like.  I leave a crib sheet to others.  Interesting that you were so confused by the last half - haven't really gotten that reaction.

TOD:

My highest light would have to be regaining contact with two good friends from my college days during the summer.  One happened by kismet and the other was a case of me searching and reaching out.  But in any case, I'm glad these people are part of my life again.

I guess the advances I made at the workplace should count as highlights, but I don't find myself too excited about them, somehow.

And, of course, there's finding HHW, the best and brightest place on the internet that's filled with the most delightful folk around!

Why Thank You, DR Dan (the Man)!

As I was saying....

The drive back up to Fairfax took a little longer than usual.  Lots of people on the road.  A few fender-benders - and, consequently, rubber-neckers - but just a lot of people on the road.  Added about 20 minutes to my trip.  However, the extra time was spent listening to NPR.  Fresh Air rebroadcast an interview with David Sedaris' from earlier in the year... lots of laughs.  And then "All Things Considered" was broadcasting reports from Sri Lanka and India about the tsunami damage and the massive loss of life, as well as a story about a group of soldiers from one base getting ready to head back to Iraq for a second tour of duty.  The world events put the traffic in perspective.

-Oh, and I had no idea just how much rain the LA area was getting.  I hope all the Hainsies and Kimlets are safe and sound and dry.

More highlights of 2004...

Sometimes the feeling of triumph in getting through something difficult becomes a highlight... Which is how I feel about two house-moves - one with which I helped, the other my own.

And finally - one specific highlight in Budapest - attending the opera - the same Budapest Opera House where I had my first theater experience at age 2, sitting between my mother and father, leaning against the red velvet seat so I could see. Totally enchanted by the whole thing.
There I sat in 2004 as an adult who makes her living in the Arts - just as I dreamed at age 2 (only then it was ballet) - my parents gone - attending with my own daughter. Quite incredible.

2. Finding out A Tale of Two Cities has all the money for its Broaway run.

I just got my second negative feedback in 3 years on eBay from a jerk DVD vendor in Brazil!  I am so pissed.  Damn him!

I just got my second negative in over 5 years about a week ago, and, just like the first one, was totally inexplicable.  The first one was from a complete ripoff artist who charged me $13.00 for insured mail, then of course didn't insure the package.  I very politely asked her for a partial refund in shipping since she didn't insure, and she promptly left me a negative.  She has tons of negatives before and after--several people never even got their packages, so I guess I should be grateful.

The second one was with me as a seller and completely dumbfounds me.  This guy won the Star Wars trilogy on DVD and paid $41.00 or so for it (which, frankly, is more than he would pay at some discount retailers).  Three days later (on a Monday) I go out to my mailbox to leave outgoing mail and lo and behold there is an overnight USPS delivery in there which for all I know could have been there all weekend.  It's a check from this guy with a letter asking me to mail his package immediately.  I instantly email him, telling him that I'm not sure how long his check has been in my mailbox, and that per my auction descriptions, I usually require checks to clear before shipping, but in his case, I'll make an exception.  I ship the next day.  The day after that he leaves me negative feedback, saying he hasn't gotten his package yet.  It just drives me bonkers.

But, yes, you can respond, however briefly, and that seems to help.  Or you can pay $20 and request a square trade mediation, but the other party has to agree to it and you may still not get your negative removed.

Hi folks.  Isn’t there a law about having to go back to work after a four day holiday?  It sure felt like there SHOULD be a law when that alarm went off at 5:30 AM this morning.

JRand.  I guess the truck accessory I was talking about yesterday is more of a southern thing.  You know, guys and their trucks.  I’ll have to PM you if you still don’t know what I meant.   :-[

2004 has been a very memorable year for me.  For very many different reasons.

The two trips I made, as you all well know, despite my poor heath at the time.

Getting to see (and meet!) Michael Ball!

Meeting DR Elmore--New York Citys Shining light.

DR Jane.  A treasure who helped me though some very hard times.

The cards, letters and phone calls I’ve shared with other members of this here board.

Making it past my surgery and coming through with flying colors.

Having all of the hurricanes pass by.

Having the chance to see some wonderful shows--(in the order I saw them)—

Thoroughly Modern Mille
Le Miz
Wonderful Town
Aida
Wicked
Boy From OZ
POTO

Having my position at work reclassed.  Since I was never able to go to college, I always felt like somewhat of a failure, now I feel like I’m coming into my own.

There’s more, I’m sure but those are the major things that come to mind.   :)

DR JMK - about Disney's California Adventure and the size of the pathways, I totally agree with you and have said that myself in conversations.  I was also telling the DP Eric how I was sad that the charm that Disneyland still has seems to be lost on the people that go to the park.  Do they recognize the architecture and the detail put into the bulidings and such?  It's very sad.

I saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou this afternoon, Dear Readers.  Beyond its very odd and difficult-to-market title, this is one very off-beat and strange movie.  The humor is downright arid, and I'm not sure whether the attempts at symbolism in the movie were intended to be serious or funny.  I was never certain whether Mr. Bill Murray was playing his character sincerely or smirking at it as he played it.  Miss Anjelica Houston is notable as Mr. Murray's wife, as is Mr. Jeff Goldblum as his nemesis.

I just got a lovely email from Rosemary Ashe, the original London Carlotta, who's getting good reviews in MARY POPPINS.  She's hoping to be over in 2006 with the show.  She recorded one of the stepsisters, Freakette or Dollbabia, I forget which, in Victor Herbert's Cinderella story THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER for the recording project I'm on in 2001.

A clear case of early onset dementia.  Screenwriter in Studio City loses all short term memory.  Starts taping hard copies of HHW posts on her walls, just to keep in touch.  (Oh.  A Company reference.)  Think of it as the love child of A Beautiful Mind and Memento.  Perfect subject matter for a movie on Lifetime.  I expect an executive producer credit on this one, Dear Reader Panni, when you pitch it to the channel.

As I understand "HIDDEN" in terms of this site, it's a registered user who doesn't want us to see his/her presence on the board.  The GUESTS are not, as I understand it, registered users, merely lurkers.  I could be wrong, however, and a "HIDDEN" could also just be a guest who is hiding.  I'll have to add that question to the other plethora of things that Mr. Mark Bakalor will soon have answers for.

Good Evening!

Good show tonight.  And a good crowd - actually, we were sold out.  They even ended up holding the curtain for five minutes in order to get everyone seated.  This week is always a good "business" week at the theatre due to the holidays - family and friends visiting, etc.  I'm just wondering how business will be next week and beyond, if ticket sales have been affected by the less than stellar reviews... We shall see.  No word on the word of mouth...  In any case...

I am close to my decision on the Apple Powerbook vs. a new Dell.  Leaning towards the former - have talked to many, many people and the consensus seems to be that I would adapt very fast, I'll have Word, it will be scads faster, I'll have wireless in the house as well as the road, and all the little stuff like iTunes and iMovie, etc. which are all extras on a PC.

The one thing the Mac expert has suggested and I am tending to agree with him, is to buy a new one from a reputable dealer (he has a place in Oregon he uses - no sales tax and free shipping) rather than eBay.  There were two almost-new ones on eBay which came with the extended warranty and a few extras, but who knows what you're really getting - I think brand new out of the box is the way to go.  That way, I'm the first and only user.  Opinions always appreciated.  I think, however, decision time is on the 'morrow.

Is the upload folder emptied yet? I'm sure you all want to see the most recent photos of the church construction.

ATTENTION ALL DRs - Do you think it would be possible for some DR - even myself - to set up an account on Photo-Bucket or some other image hosting site that could be set up for all the DRs here on HHW?  This way we would not have to worry about the upload folder filling up.

I suppose the biggest logistic to worry about would be accessing the person-who-set-the-account-up's personal and billing information on said site since the password and login would have to be distributed to those DRs on this site who wish to post pics.

-Just wondering...

Otherwise, as BK mentioned, if any DRs would like to post some more pics, the easiest remedy is to go back to your own past posts and delete the photos from them.  Just click on your name on the left or go to the member directory.  At the bottom of the page, just go to the option that allows you display the last number of posts (1, 2, 10, 50, etc.).  Click on said option, and edit from there.

Or check to see if your online service makes personal web storage space available to you.  Then you can just upload the photos to that "space", and then just use the "insert image" option in the posts.

Did that make sense?

In any case...

My brother, Jay, came in tonight from San Diego!  It looks the Simbulan family will be ringing in 2005 with everyone in attendance!  -And January 1 is my brother Jay's birthday too.

Before he left San Diego, one of my aunts - one of many, many aunts - gave him a box of goodies to bring back with him.  In said box: pandesal (a Filipino bread/roll, hopia (Filipino pastries), assorted rice cakes with assorted fillings and toppings, as well as some calamansi (sp?) (a sort of citrus fruit, like a lime).  YUM!!  I've sampled some of them when I got back from the show, and I shall sample the rest of them over the next few days.

I've had the same advice from Chris.  This way it insures that you receive all the perks and follow up customer service from Apple.  And purchasing the Apple-Care package has also been highly suggested to me.

As for the wireless capability... Do you already have a wireless set up in your house, or will you have to purchase the requisite modem, router and access point/node?  Although, I believe the setup for the Airport for Mac's is not as complicated as it is for PCs.

*I think I've told this story before - When I was playing for Aida (Elton John and Tim Rice not Verdi), the stage management crew would set up an Airport hub so that they could communicate easier during the show between the backstage, the light booth, the sound board, etc.  Well, it also allowed those with a Mac laptop to take advantage of the wireless internet.  It was great fun surfing the net between numbers!  As well as sending IMs across the pit!

How's this for weird. I had TWO VCRs die on me today. My 2 1/2 year old Toshiba bit the video head bullet today and no picture at all. So, I go to a 7 year old Funai that I've used as a backup and a second VCR to dub tape to tape. Anyway, it works for about an hour, and then, some circuit went haywire in it and now when I turn it on and insert a tape and hit play, it turns itself off without playing it. [sigh]

What would the odds be in two different machines biting the dust on the same day? Astronomical!

No no no!  I think it is a must see episode!  Lots of previously unseen clips.  Plus, for some reason, we are shown sides of the various teams that are clearly meant to make the audience want to root for only one of them.  Are we being set up for an emotional fall?

I wish I had some cookies right now.  We had no cookies for Christmas this year.  I think I will write a teleplay for Hallmark's Hall of Fame--A Christmas Without Cookies.  It will be an enlightening and inspiring story of a bitter man and the lesson he learns one Christmas when he neglects to buy some Italian butter cookies, particularly the long kind that are chocolate-dipped on one end and sprinkled with red and green jimmies.  Hopefully, we can get Aidan Quinn or Charles Durning to star.

...Currently in the CD player, Dawn Upshaw's latest recital disc, "Voices of Light" - songs of Messiaen, Debussy, Golijov and Faure.  As I was reading the production notes in the booklet, I noticed the Messiaen selections were recorded back in 1997 and the rest of the songs were recorded last year.  Interesting... They were also recorded in different venues.  I may have to give this disc a very close "technical" listen to see if I can detect a difference in the sound of one venue from the other as well as differences in the sound of the piano as well as Ms. Upshaw's voice.  In any case...

Some truly beautiful singing, and some amazing piano playing by Gilbert Kalish - those Messiaen songs are a bitch!

Sounds good to me!  I'd probably add some freshly grated parmesan and some mashed cloves of roasted garlic.  Or to be truly decadent - especially if they were being served with a nice, juicy steak or some prime rib - I would add a few crumbles of bleu cheese.  -Oh, and I'd use buttermilk for the initial "thinning out" too for some extra tang.

Mmmmm...I like the bleu cheese angle, but since the other main side for the meal will be sauerkraut, there won't be room for another so zesty dish.  ANd my sisters both usually use buttermilk to thin the potatoes.

Our New Year's Day meal is always roasted pork and sauerkraut.  It's suppose to bring good luck for the new year.

I've actually had mashed potatoes "laced" with sauerkraut before at some restaurant.  It worked.

On a related note... The Mashed Potato Club in Chicago closed in 2002.  Truly a one-of-a-kind place for many reasons: the decor, the staff, the bar, the food.  And as the name implied, you could get mashed potatoes (two or four scoops to a plate) in many forms.  There was a list of 100+ toppings to choose from.  Basically, you could have mashed potatoes for your appetizer, main dish and dessert!  Just customize the toppings - I never did try peanut butter, nor jelly beans, nor some of the more exotic - and questionable - listings.  They also had some wonderful "regular" food - sort of like high-end diner.  And the martinis... And the waiters... -according to the blurbs in the menu, flirting with the waitstaff was encouraged!

:D

DR Jed - There are some very shelf-stable Filipino pastries, I'll see what I can wrap up and send to you sometime - I'll need your address.  They're very similar to the Chinese and Japanese style sweets in that they're filled with the likes of sweet bean pastes, sweet potato purees (there's a purple sweet potato, ube, which I really like), coconut, cassava root, etc.  And the crusts are very "short" - lots of fat and sugar in them.

In the meantime, some Asian grocery stores sell Filipino goodies - and there may even be a Filipino store in your city.  The most popular brand is Goldilocks.  They make all sorts of stuff from candy to pastries to ice cream.  My favorites are the polvorones which are basically sugar, toasted rice flour, milk powder and flavoring... So good, so addictive.... and, of course, not exactly the most nutritious thing you should be eating. ;)
