Title: THE SHAKING OF THE BOOTY
Post by: bk on June 18, 2004, 12:00:29 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've pondered the shaking of the booty, and now it is time to post and shake, not necessarily in that order.

Couldn't make it to the Party last night. I did, however, have a wonderful time with my dear friend, David. We (Ant and David and I) had a very nice diner dinner at The Terminal Diner. The name does not inspire confidence but it sits at the foot of the Roosevelt Island Tram which, for those who are unfamiliar with this piece of New York real estate is a re-developed island of apartments accessible mainly by a tram going back and forth between the Island. It was called Welfare Island for many years and had a hospital at the southern end. That hospital is where Alberta Hunter, the amazing jazz singer, worked for many years when she was "out of the business".  Anyway, I digress (what's new). I had a delicious meat loaf sandwich, Anthony had a veggie burger and David had a chicken Ceasar salad. We then moseyed on over to the Sutton City Cinema 1 to see Broadway: The Golden Age. I really enjoyed it. It made me realize again why I love theatre and how magical it can be. I'm looking forward to the DVD release as well, because from what I read, he will include more footage of interviews that he couldn't fit into the finished product. We left the theatre and took a long walk around midtown and then we (Ant and me) returned home and went to bed.

I'm listening to Love Me or Leave Me right now. I just finished listening to Miss Streisand and Yves Montand sing about psychic energy and plants growing and coming back, etc. Later I will listen to The Grand Tour and The Baker's Wife. I have a meeting from 10am to noon so I will not be able to listen to as many CDs as I would like, damn them, damn them all to hell.

Anthony will be on Long Island this weekend (he leaves this afternoon) for clown shows so I will be alone. I have plenty to listen to, having gone to the library and left with many CDs. I will also finally watch Call Me Madam which I purchased at a little CD/DVD store in my neighborhood. I'm looking forward to that.

Well, I need to peruse the report handed out yesterday. We need to be familiar with it in regards to our meeting.

Au revoir, mes amis, till later this afternoon.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LAURA II!!![/move]

Oy, I had a great time at the partay last night, but I'm dragging my booty this morning.  But that's okay--it's Friday and the project I've been working on these past three months is complete and it looks like the next week or so will allow for some primo goof-off time at the office.

Media Report:

CD Player (at home):  B-52's Cosmoc Thing--I was playing that for the partay.
CD Player (at work):  Audra McDonald Happy Songs
DVD Player:  SCTV Volume One.  Althought this is another somewhat pricy set, it's worth it!  Terrific funny stuff!

I missed the party because I was at ABT's SWAN LAKE.  I marvel at ballet dancers... they make it look so easy.  To keep it brief, this production used a fog machine more than any Broadway musical.  The corps de ballet was much better then the NYCB Corp... they were in perfect synch with each other.  For a "story ballet" there was a lot of showy dancing that didn't move the story, but then the story of SWAN LAKE isn't exactally that enthralling.  Ashley Tuttle was a delight in the female lead.  And although Angel Corella in the male lead spends most of the evening watching other dancers when he finally got his big Pas De Deux with Tuttle in Act III he was spectacular.

I'm working at home. Lots of details to look at - so nothing on the CD player. Earlier I was listening to The Producers. DRs Panni and Michael, do you notice a similarity between "King of Broadway" and the "King of Kensington" theme? I found myself humming the latter after listening to the former.

On the stove: A large corned beef. I work in different corners of the city, and each neighborhood has its attractions. Wednesday I passed a kosher butcher shop and couldn't resist. Now if I only had a crowd to feed ...

Re: last night when I said Laura II's birthday was in a few minutes.

Well it was 10pm for me.  So 2 hours was a few minutes.

(and no i don't live in Greenland, ha ha) :)

DR SWW, it is funny that you got asked to make the food again.  I suppose it's just easier than making it herself.

I know she was incredibly rude.  But I think I would try again.  I mean someone has to be the bigger person.  But this time, like DR Jane said, I would try to get advice on what ingredients they don't like.  And also, I would try to dumb down the recipes (just use the basic ingredients).  They would probably like it better.  Good luck!

DR BEN you made some wise purchases yesterday!  They will be part of your permanent collection.  Some music and movies lays there like so much fish....I think your selections will be often listened and viewed.

DRWEL...I love Swan Lake....always makes me think of Dracula since it was the music used in the Bela Lugosi movie...but I like the story.  Tchiak has always been a favorite!

Speaking of Tams-Whitmark (ugh!), the first musical I ever did that they represented was LI'L ABNER, and I LOATHED those horrendous sides they furnished. Made read-through and rehearsal a VERY trying and frustrating experience. And people who were playing multiple roles had four or five of those awful things juggling them trying to find where their lines were. Just terrible. Other Tams shows I've done (A CHORUS LINE comes to mind), the director usually copies his script and gives it out, and lets the sides sit in the office.

The next musical I did after that was THE PAJAMA GAME, and I thought I had died and gone to heaven with the libretto and music all in one book. Bless you, MTI.

I said it before and I'll say it again:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LAURA II!!

I'm working the reception desk today (praise to Buddah) so I don't have to move furniture around the office (they're renovating and moving desks around). Should be a fairly quiet day in the office, but of course, now that I've said that it will be outrageously chaotic.

Media check:

CD: David Sedaris' "Barrel Fever" discs two and three and the CAROLINE, OR CHANGE promo CD.

DVD: MOBY DICK: THE MUSICAL! CD. It only plays in my DVD player for some odd reason.

VHS: Still broken.

Mini-disc player: Selections from Jeanine Tesori's VIOLET and CAROLINE, OR CHANGE.

Computer CD Player: I can't remember, but it's something... Maybe the new B'way recording of LITTLE SHOP featuring our very own Ms. Kerry Butler...?

Yes, Jason, he is our Ravenal.  We will be here until 7/31.  Admittingly, not normally what you would think of as a Ravenal physically, but he's doing a great job.  I can't tell you how nice it is to go to work to do a show that you're proud of, with people you enjoy working with (the whole cast) and whom you respect (90% of the cast).  He is however, not a fan of having his name on the internet; let's call him BD

You respect 90% of the cast? Wow...I want to work there! You can ask BD...I think I maybe respected two people in our whole company at Bucks Co., with him being one of the two. Seriously, though, when they weren't stoned or drunk or peeing on the floor in the rec room or passing condoms to each other onstage, they were a tolerable bunch of folks. Now I'm trying to remember a time when they weren't stoned or drunk...I'm hard-pressed to think of that.

You're right, though...he's not your typical Ravenal, but I'm sure he's fantastic. Such a handsome, talented guy with a great personality to boot. I miss him.

Anywho...I have envelopes to stuff and phones to answer. Oh, rapture!
Title: Re:THE SHAKING OF THE BOOTY
Post by: mrkdl73 on June 18, 2004, 08:00:03 AM
I find the TW sides to be very unhelpful and (hush, hush) most places I've worked give actors the whole script, unless they have one line or something.  In high school when the director didn't know better, it was always funny when someone who had sides chimed in with the wrong line, but chimed in anyway because their cue was the same.  I much appreciate the full scripts of MTI and RNH.

Yes, doing SHOWBOAT, but we sometimes refer to our production as "No Boat" because we have one of those "concept unit sets" and we don't have an actual boatk.  Yes, it works and it is much better than having a boat set piece and having it look cheesy bad.
Title: Re:THE SHAKING OF THE BOOTY
Post by: Jason on June 18, 2004, 08:02:52 AM
Oh, if only I had a picture of our set for TITANIC, then you could see what a cheesy "boat" set looks like.
Title: Re:THE SHAKING OF THE BOOTY
Post by: mrkdl73 on June 18, 2004, 08:07:34 AM
Actually, now I feel bad because I do really respect the entire cast talent-wise, it's just that sometimes some frustrate me with extra-curricular activities (use your imagination) and comments like "I take a nap during Act II and wake up when you and Magnolia sing the ragtime "Lovin' That Man"reprise (the Trocodera audition scene).  I mean it's one thing to take a nap and another thing to take a nap and then tell everyone you're doing it when the people you're telling are running around singing, dancing and frantically putting on thier next costume.  It's a good thing we all have a sense of humor.

Good Morning!

WOW!  It's almost 11:00am here on the east coast, and I've actually been for almost four hours already!!!!  4 HOURS?!?!?!?!

-Something tells me a nap is in my (near) future. ;)

I won't go into details, but on my way back from Williamsburg, VA, this morning...  ::)   I decided to take the scenic route back to Richmond.  Instead of taking I-64, I took Route 60.  What a beautiful ride back, and it was a nice morning for riding back with the windows down.  And it only took me about 15 minutes longer taking the "local road" than taking the interstate.  I had taken that route before but it was at night.  It was nice to see everything by the light of day.

Oh!  And since I did get up early, I treated myself to a good ole fashioned breakfast at a place callled "Mama Steve's".  What a neat place.  Very homey.  All the waitresses are in sky blue uniforms and wear  bonnets.  I was hoping to find scrapple on the menu, but, alas, I had to settle for Surry Sausage (the locally made good stuff).  To accompany my sausage, I had two eggs over-easy, hash browns, toast (with apple butter), two buttermilk pancakes (with maple and blueberry syrups), orange juice and coffee.  Everything was quite yummy - although I did leave some of the hash browns and a few slices of the toast behind.  It was a lot of food!  And the breakfast was more than enough to fuel me for my trip back to Richmond.

Oh...

As for the weekly Media Check:

DVD: Barbara Cook "Mostly Sondheim"

CD: Bette Midler's "Rosemary Clooney Songbook" (I wasn't as "annoyed" at this album as I thought I would be.  However, there is "room" on the CD for a couple more songs.  A surprisingly short overall running time.)
Cheryl Bentyne - "Talk of the Town"
Janis Siegel - "Friday Night Special"

VCR: A tape for DR Jason of various TLC programs.

Well, I need to go through the pile of mail - and bills (ugh!) - that has been building up next to my laptop, as well as get my Father's Days card prepped and mailed - Yes, I know, I should have done them earlier this week.  However, I did buy the cards a few weeks ago.  So... :P

Oh, last, but certainly not least...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR LAURA II!!!!

"Sides" are portions of the script of a show. Casting directors will often hand out "sides" at auditions so they can hear actors read scenes with other actors just to hear how they sound and if they can actually speak the words.

Tams-Witmark, one of the "other" licensing companies, sends out books with only the lines and cues for specific characters. For example, if I'm playing Charlie Brown in YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN, the director would be sent a full script with all the dialogue printed in it. I would be given a script with only Chuck's dialogue and maybe a pick-up cue or two thrown in there so I might know when to speak.

DR mrkdl73 - Please pass on my best to BD too!  And give his abs a nice "pat" for me too! ;)

Are you staying in the actor's house there?  When I was at Circa '21, I had the "attic" room-suite.  There were only five people in the show I was doing there, so we each had our own room, and since I was the MD, I got the "suite".  *However, I was always scared of that very tight spiral staircase.

Oh, and please say HI to Denny for me too!  Are Tammy and Brad still there?  Still together?  And do they still have very attractive bartenders?  ;D

OH!  And I asked before, but you may have missed it... Is there a chance I've played for you a SETCs or UPTAs?

VCR: A tape for DR Jason of various TLC programs.

For ME? You're gonna force me to go out and get a new VCR, aren't you? Thank you so much! You spoil me with my TLC videos. I may have to take them with me to Louisville next week so I can just sit and watch all day long. Of course, my parents have cable, so I could just watch THAT all day long, too.

Oh, the food I plan to eat when I get home. Chik-Fil-A, Moby Dick fish (yes, it's a real place), O'Charley's (how I love their yeast rolls), mom and dad's homemade fried chicken. It's so not on my diet, but...yuuuuuuuumy!

If you can't pig out while on vacation (if going home constitutes a vacation), then why go on vacation?

No one loves to eat more than I (I'm sure some of us here are probably equal in our love of food), but the only time I ever forget dieting and watching what I eat is on vacation.

        PANNI-PENNY PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

Yesterday I was instructing DR Jane on the pronunciation of my name should she have need of calling my Hungarian relatives. She admitted that she had never been quite certain of how to say Panni.  As I’m sure other DRs have Panni issues, I must remedy the situation at once.
Here’s how to do it: The rhythm of Panni is like Penny (in fact, I had an elderly relative in Schenectady who to her dying day always called me "Penny" and thought it to be my name.) Anyway, for the middle “eh” sound in Penny, substitute “aw” and you have Panni.
Simple. End of language lesson.

Matt H: This will be the first time in 10 years that I have gone anywhere for an entire week without it being some sort of holiday (read: Christmas) or without having some sort of acting or singing gig. I'm not counting the trip to Chicago as part of my "vacation" because that is actually a working trip, but when I get home, all bets are off, food-wise. And, of course, we're having a family reunion on 4th of July. There are at least 100 people on my mom's side of the family that will be there, and they're all FABULOUS cooks. You wouldn't believe the massive amounts of food that will be there.

My parents make the most incredible spreads of food you could possibly imagine. I'm sure that for my arrival-night dinner we'll have fried chicken, mashed potatoes with homemade gravy, green beans, homemade creamed corn, sauteed carrots, homemade biscuits and possibly some broccoli casserole. All of my favorites. Of course, one can only eat half a teaspoon of each of those things before you're completely stuffed, but it do taste so good! Top it off with a glass of sweet tea and I'm in heaven. And I'm sure dad will have a pumpkin pie waiting for me, too.

What can anyone tell me about Hot September, the musical based on Picnic?  I'm listening to what I'm guessing is a demo recording and I think I recognize a couple of the performers.  Am I hearing Alice Playten as Madge?

DR Jason - No rush on getting a new VCR.  If I had some other way of taping them for you, I would.  But I don't, so I am.

???

All that food - and the food in your subsequent post - sounds sooooo good.  For me, right now, I've tried "pigging out" here and there the past few weeks, but I can tell my stomach is still "small" from when I was sick - and wasn't eating as much.  I've been out to dinner a few times with some friends, and I've found myself full just after a slice of bread and the salad.  It's kind of nice to know that I'm getting full that fast - and, thus, eating less - but I really do/did love eating a full meal: salad/appetizer, entree, dessert.  Ah, well.  Happy Eating!

OH!  And a tip from my time on the road regarding O'Charley's.  I usually like to order the Black & Blue Salad - if it's still on the menu.  It's their grilled steak salad.  However, I always ask for the steak medium rare, and instead of the bleu cheese dressing, I ask for ranch on the side.  Whenever I've ordered it this way, I've found the salad to be much "fresher" - at least it seems that way.  Basically, the "special request" keeps the folks in the kitchen on their toes.  -And sometimes, I do get it with bleu cheese on the side.  And, yes, those yeast rolls are sooo good!  Especially when they are hot and fresh out of the oven!

*And if you need dining tips for Chicago... Feel free to ask! ;)

I don't think I've ever had homemade fried chicken. :(

Jennifer, you have just made me the saddest boy on the face of this website. You've got to get someone to make you some homemade fried chicken...or do it yourself! It's not that hard.

My parents (well, my dad--he does the chicken and mom does everything else) use a special seasoned flour called Kentucky Kernel. I've never seen it outside of Kentucky, but if you can find it online, I highly recommend it.

DR Jose: It's time I got a new VCR anyway. You're just giving me a reason to do it! And I could use the tax deduction...

[move=right,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Happy  Birthday  DR  Laura  II!![/move]

In my DVD player:  a DVD-R of the HBO special of "Elaine Stritch At Liberty," the documentary that's more show footage than documentary...there's too much show footage, because it's already on the regular DVD, which I already have.

In my CD player:  Rufus Wainwright's "Want One."  This CD has the song "Vibrate," which The Manhattan Transfer just recorded for their next CD (to be released in September, I think), which will be called "Vibrate."  I've never heard the song.

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's last episode of Comedy Central's 51 Greatest Smart-Asses, which also has last night's "Introducing Graham Norton."  It's a clip-fest from his British show because next week, he's getting his own show on Comedy Central!  Also on the tape is last night's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" because Graham was the guest.  I had to tape that.  I loved his "So Graham Norton" show from Britain and I really think I'll like his new show. ;D

My dad tends to skillet-fry rather than deep-fry. And he generally only fries breasts and tenderloins. Skillet frying tends to not be so greasy. He always uses Crisco vegetable oil and lays the chicken out on paper towels to soak up the excess oil. Of course, he used to the international quality control manager for Kentucky Fried Chicken, so he does chicken right!

I had two slices of pizza for lunch but now I'm hungry for some fried chicken.

A friend's sister once made us some fried chicken.  The recipe she followed called for crushed corn flakes instead of bread crumbs.  She didn't have any corn flakes handy, so she used Kellogg's Frosted Flakes instead.  It didn't taste bad.  But we started joking about what she would have done if all she had were Lucky Charms.

Though not so much now if ever - when I was growing up we had fried chicken once a week.  Skillet fried...mashed potatoes....and usually green beans.  Oh my did we eat.  The only thing I liked better was meat loaf.  With mashed potatoes, fresh tomatoes from the garden in the summer, and macaroni and cheese.  And the next day, a meatloaf sandwich.

No we were NOT vegetarians!

I've heard of Corn Flake Chicken. It sounds tasty.

One of my favorite things that my grandmother makes is this incredible broccoli casserole using cream of mushroom soup, Velveeta (the cheese that's made to melt) and ritz crackers or saltines. Either way, it's AMAZING! Of course it's a heart-attack waiting to happen, but it's fantastic.

The only thing I liked better was meat loaf...And the next day, a meatloaf sandwich.

That just reminded me that meatloaf will most definitely be on the menu while I'm home. In fact, I'll make it! My mom works so hard during the day that she deserves to have dinner waiting for her when she gets home, and my dad is busy running his own business, so he doesn't have much time for it, either, even though his office is in the basement of our house. And I get to cook so rarely that it will be a treat for me to do it...and then I get to reap the rewards of my effort! Seems like we'll all win!

and meatloaf....that just brings back wonderful memories! I used to make a meatloaf roll that had spinache in it. You would roll out the meatloaf in a long flat rectangle and spread the spinach on it then roll it into a log pop it in the oven and kablooey, there is your spinach meatloaf meal!

I didn't realize that Tams still used sides.  I remember that they used to be on thin paper and full of typos.  They probably want groups to rent more copies of the full script, but in this day and age of copy machines and scanners they are probably just causing people to break the copyright laws.

DR D(tM): If you think that picture makes you wanna sing "Put On A Happy Face," you should try looking at Ms. Pinkins for two hours with that exact same face throughout the whole show! Wow!

MBarnum: The spinach meatloaf log sounds yummy. I doubt my parents would go for that, but once I get a kitchen, I'm definitely going to try it.

Here's another southern cookin' tip for all y'all: When cooking green beans, start out with only enough water (or bean juice) to cover the bottom of the pot...maybe about 1/4 inch of liquid. Cook the beans with a hamhock or a strip or two of bacon (lid on) until the liquid is gone, and then add a little bit more and repeat the process. Add lots and lots of black and cayenne pepper and go to town. Be sure to keep the sweet tea handy--the pepper makes these puppies super spicy! It's too too too diveen.

"I used to make a meatloaf roll that had spinache in it. You would roll out the meatloaf in a long flat rectangle and spread the spinach on it then roll it into a log pop it in the oven and kablooey, there is your spinach meatloaf meal!"

Mmm, sounds good. I have put green beans in the middle. Recipies I have seen say to use canned green beans, but I just put fresh green beans in the middle. They cook better and are not as soggy. You just do the same thing MB mentions above and voila, when you cut that meat loaf, you have your vegetable in the same piece. Yummy (I love green beans. I think they are my favorite green vegetable).

I had ice cream after lunch today. Wasn't planning on it, but I walked Anthony to the subway so he could get to Penn Station for the trip to Long Island. I was walking back to the office, and that nasty, bad Mr. Softee Ice Cream Truck was parked on the corner. Damn him! How could he sit on that corner and tempt me in such a way. Because it's hot and sticky outside I couldn't resist and I got a plain chocolate soft serve cone which I devoured on the few remaining blocks to my office.

My meatloaf pan is actually a pan within a pan, so that the grease all drains into the lower pan leaving the meatloaf with far less grease.  Of course, if I make it with ground turkey, I don't have to worry about the grease.

Darn you all!!!  I've been craving fried chicken for a week or two, and here it becomes a topic of discussion!

I shall not, however, be giving in to this craving tonight, for I am going to my grandparents' house for a simply yummilicious Greek dinner.  For years and years, my grandparents would always auction off a Greek dinner for 8 at the local Rotary/Chamber of Commerce auction.  The dinner never failed to bring in big bucks for the auction.  Been a few years since they did one, but they decided to give it a go again this year.  Last night was the dinner, so tonight is leftover night for the family. :D

MBarnum's spinach meatloaf sounds rather good to me... two wonderful foods in one!  As for what to put on meatloaf, it's usually ketchup for me.

I started BROKEN ARROW this afternoon, and it, too, is a Fox non-anamorphic, probably one of the last they did before doing their transfers with anamorphic enhancement. The picture is very sharp for a standard letterbox, but one is sad to think how much better it would have looked enhanced for widescreen TVs.

I've always liked this movie despite ridiculous lapses in logic and continuity.

Is anyone here as big a fan of COLD fried chicken as I am? Oh my gosh, I'd rather have it cold than hot, honestly. In fact, my dad always fries up two meals' worth and puts half of it in two big Ziplock bags and pops it in the fridge. I inevitably have some around midnight or so and then snack on it for the next day or two til it's all gone. And it's generally known throughout my house that those bags of chicken are mine--HANDS OFF!

I'm so addicted to fried chicken that I can eat it cold or hot. When I fry up enough for two meals, I sometimes DO get the urge to eat it cold late at night and have been known to steal it out of the frig. But I do try to show some self-control MOST of the time and let it stay until the next day. However, I will zap it in the microwave if I have it for a hot meal the next day. Warmed over is never as good as fresh and hot and not as good as cold, but it's better than nothing!

Since we're talking food, I have to admit that I baked a triple chocolate fudge cake this afternoon. Just used a mix, so it's nothing fancy, but I haven't had a cake in a long, long time and was really hungry for one. I'll use this as my dessert for a few days.,

Okay now I feel deprived!

Where can I find a good fried chicken recipe where I don't need to deep fry it.  Or is there no point in me trying this if I have no clue what I'm doing.

Now all I need is for someone to mention Chinese food, so I can be obsessed with that all week.

For fried chicken recipes, you can go to: http://www.americastestkitchen.com/search.asp or http://southernfood.about.com/library/rec98/bl80517h.htm. I love America's Test Kitchen and their food seems to turn out incredibly well, so I'd go with their recipes, which also includes an oven-fried chicken.

Matt: Thanks for the cake talk! Now I'm going to have to bake when I get to Louisville. My mom has a recipe for an INCREDIBLE orange Bundt cake that uses orange juice and pudding in the batter. Then, when the cake is still in the pan and warm, you pour an orange juice-based sauce on and let it soak in. It is the most dense, moist cake I've ever eaten and I love it, love it, love it. My family also enjoys strawberry cakes made with the Duncan Hines cake mix and covered in strawberry icing. Geez...now I wanna go have some cake!

My new favourite quote:
For all those would-be screenwriters who feverishly clutch their Syd Field or worship at the shrine of Robert McKee or some other guru who has never written a successful screenplay.  Who constantly ask stupid questions about character arcs  and how long should a script be and on what page Act One should end on...this one's for you...

Okay not that I was going to see it this weekend anyhow, but in today's paper it said that they could not release the movie The Terminal today in Quebec(the one with Tom Hanks).

Apparently the french translations got delayed. And they cannot release a movie unless that is done.

So no movie here in Montreal till next week I think.

The movie actually looks really good, although since there is no movie here, we got no reviews.

Chicken in my house growing up was most always of this oven-fried variety.  Pretty decent, but just not quite the same as the real stuff. :D

This week's media check:

On deeveedee: Mickey Mouse in Living Color, Volume 2 and The Intruder starring Mr. William Shatner, directed by Roger Corman.

In the CD player: Sherry! by Laurence Rosenthal and James Lipton, and The Music of Lee Holdridge (one of the early Varese Sarabande CDs).

What I'm reading:  A Nomad of the Time Streams by Michael Moorcock.

And the reason I'm making this short 'n' sweet: Michael and I are going to the theater to see the uncut, undubbed, uncensored and un-Raymond Burred, original Japanese version of Godzilla!

I am so psyched!!!

I like America's Test Kitchen and Cook's Illustrated, but sometimes they can just get too fussy... and too "deconstructionist".  My biggest beef with them is that they do not suggest using a wok for any type of cooking.  They claim it doesn't function ideally as a cooking device.  WHAT?!?!?  Can 50 Million (Billion-?) Chinese be wrong?!??! ;)

Now don't get me wrong, I do like - and even love - some of their recipes - and recipe "improvements".  It's just that sometimes they take all the fun out of the original recipe, and sometimes their "ideal" of a particular recipe goes against many, many years - and generations of home cooks around the world.

OK... Rant over... But I do subscribe to Cook's Illustrated.

And, DR Jason... If you want cake..  Have you been down to the Magnolia Bakery in The Village?  If not...  GO NOW!!!!  The cupcakes are addictive, and the slices of cake can serve as a meal or two on their own!  My favorites are their coconut cake, and their Devil's Food cake with caramel icing!

Hmm... I may need to hit Ukrop's now and get some baked goods for tonight... Hmm...

Good Early Evening!

I'm singin' in the rain...

What a pretty neat afternoon I had today.  I took care of my bills and Father's Day cards, then walked up to school to get some piano practice in.  It was hot today, but it didn't feel as "oppressive" as the TV guys and gals were saying it was.  However, the practice studios up at school are very well A/C'ed - almost chilly sometimes - and it felt great stepping into the lobby after the walk.

Just singin' in the rain...

Today's practicing consisted of the C major scale, the first part of a Bach prelude and read-thru of a Haydn sonata and some really cool - and hard!!! - Rodgers & Hammerstein transcriptions by Stephen Hough.  I think I spent about 45 minutes on the C scale alone!!  My fingers and arms are really out of shape as far as playing on a real piano is concerned.  But today's practice was very good, and I managed to get in just under 3 hours!  And the time went by relatively fast too!  Best of all, however, was the sense of joy I got - even from playing scales! - from just playing for myself.  No conductor to follow.  No patch advance pedal to worry about.  No programming.  No singer to follow.  It was just me and the piano.  It's been a long time!  I just remember hearing Mitsuko Uchida saying in an interview that practicing is simply listening to yourself play.  And it was nice hearing myself play again.  But, boy, does that Bach guy get pretty linear and tricky! ;)

What a glorious feeling...

After practicing, I started the walk back home... and I noticed that the skies were no longer clear and blue like they were when I walked to school.  Well, I saw a few patches of blue... "I can make it back before the rain starts!"  So, I made a small detour and picked up a bubble tea - well, actually, I got an almond slush today with boba (tapioca pearls).  I'm walking... I'm walking... So, I'm sipping away on my slush, and watching the clouds in the distance start to gather and turn grayer and darker.  And the thunder and lightning had started too.  I'm walking faster... I'm walking a lot faster... Well, the wind picks up... And the rain begins... Well, it pours!!  And, of course, I'm still about a good six blocks away from home.  I take cover under a porch, but the wind is blowing so hard, it's blowing the rain under the roof of the porch.  By this time, I have to take my glasses off in order to see anything - which is a strange concept - and my shirt is pretty much soaked, and my backpack is also getting wet too.  Thankfully, I had a plastic bag in my backpack, and I used that to protect my cell phone and wallet.  Once the major downpour ended - along with the quite major lightning - I just said to myself, "It's just water!"  And then I started walking home.  Sometimes leisurely, sometimes a little rushed.  I even skipped too!  I didn't do any major puddle splashing, but I was soaked by the time I got home.  And I liked it!

I'm happy again!

Now back to the food...

Meatloaf - I like all kinds!  DR Marnum's spinach variation sounds very tasty, and I think I may have had something similar, but the spinach was in a layer.  I also remember eating - and making - the meatloaves where your put the hardboiled eggs in the middle, so when you sliced the loaf, you got this bulls-eye effect.

As for gravy vs. ketchup - My mom and dad would usually have both on the table.  I prefer gravy over ketchup.  I've also come across a recipe where the gravy had ketchup and mustard in it.  -And it was quite tasty too!  -I also like gravy on my french fries - "wet fries".  But I also like putting a layer of ketchup on top of the loaf before it goes into the oven.  -And then you get that "cool" orange-colored grease. ;)

Fried Chicken - Sometimes simple is better - just a coating of seasoned flour before the chicken goes into the hot oil.  But sometimes, all those "crunchies" are good from the batter-dipped variety.  And I also like the southern variation of dipping the fresh, hot, fried chicken in a honey concoction before serving.  YUMMY!  -Especially if there are toasted pecans in the honey mixture.  -A lot of "chicken and waffle" places serve it this way.

As for hot vs. cold - I prefer it hot.  Cold just gets too difficult to eat sometimes - everything seems just to "compact", and the skin isn't as crunchy as it was - or no longer crunchy at all.  But, sometimes cold is good too.

There was a recipe in Gourmet for Maryland Style Fried Chicken a month ago.  Very interesting.  After frying it, you put some water in the pan and kind of steam the chicken.  -It helps keep the chicken moist.  But it does ease the crunch of the coating.  Hmmm...

Aww.. Thank you very much for the compliment!

Hmm... Maybe I could forward my manuscript to you... Hmm... Well, not really... But...

 ???

On a related note - On my walk back home - just before the rain started - I walked past the European Market - that's what it's called, that's what it is.  And prominently featured in one corner of the window was a mix for spaetzle.  And the brand name was... Panni!

Hmm... Now I want some goulash and spaetzle and red cabbage... Hmm...  Oh, and some extra sour cream on the side!  Hmm...

Well, it is dinner time...

Well, I really don't have much to say, but at least I'm posting.

My mom just told me a very long and winding story that didn't seem to go anywhere. It started "When I was little, this boy named Tommy Smith lived next door," and ended "...and he jumped up on the table and barked at me."

Good luck!
I have indeed been asked to bake cookies.  Tollhouse.  The darling DIL (Daughter in law) has asked me to not include nuts.  But apparently she and the SIL liked the cookies; it was the kids at the party who didn't like them.

And, yes, she finally broke down and asked me in person.  This came after der B and I spent the day ladsitting (and the two lads can be a handful), and then joining the clan for back-to-back baseball games.  That's a "T-ball" game for the 4-year-old, and a modified softball game for the almost-7.  During the second game, I took the younger lad over to a park area nearby, to play on swings and such, which gave the DIL a chance to actually watch her older son play ball.  It also gave der B a chance to tell her that I wanted to be asked directly, and not though him.

Helping out on this was an earlier incident, before we all left for the ball field.  I had loaned her my copies of the LOTR expanded DVDs, and today asked if she were finished with them.  She said she was, so I went to get them back.  She was flabbergasted when I collected the sets for both FOTR and T2T; she clearly remembered owning FOTR herself.  Did she complain to me?  No, she ran to daddy herself, rather loudly.  He had to come to me to ask what was up.  I told him that I clearly remembered loaning her both DVD sets.  He then had to take this info back to her.  She proceeded to search through her DVD collection (nowhere as large as ours, but also not organized in any fashion)...and found her single-disc edition of FOTR, which registered a mumbled "oops" as an appology.  Directed to der B, not myself.

Needless to say, my being gracious with helping take care of the younger lad, and her own realization that she's less than perfect, helped with her giving me her request in person.

So, a calloo callay for a victory, in which I tried not to rub her nose.  I've a week to get the cookies made.  (At least I know the adults enjoy them.  I've a hunch the lads would prefer Chips Ahoy, but that's another bridge to cross.)

Oh, if only I had a picture of our set for TITANIC, then you could see what a cheesy "boat" set looks like.
If it was Swiss cheesy, I can understand why it sunk!

The Summer Knows

Written by: Alan Bergman / Marilyn Bergman / Michel Legrand

The summer smiles
The summer knows
And unashamed
She sheds her clothes
The summer smoothes
The restless sky
And lovingly
She warms the sand
On which you lie
The summer knows
The summer’s wise
She sees the doubt
Within your eyes
And so she takes
Her summertime
Tells the moon to wait
And the sun to linger
Twists the world
Round her summer finger
Lets you see
The wonder of it all
And if you’ve learned
Your lesson well
There’s little more
For her to tell
One last caress
It’s time to dress
For fall

It's the holes in the cheese that made the boat sink! :D

Robin: The original Godzilla (Gojira) is a fantastic film, and really a different experience from the Americanized version.  The American version is fascinating to watch once you've seen the original, but the difference between them is night and day.  I would go so far as to say the original is a genre masterpiece.

Shaking the botties away?

There's an old superstition 'way down south
Ev'ry darkie believes that trouble won't stay
If you shake it away
When they hold a revival way down south
Ev'ry darkie with care and trouble that day
Tries to shake it away

Shaking the blues away, unhappy news away
If you are blue, it's easy to
Shake off your cares and troubles

Telling the blues to go, they may refuse to go
But as a rule, they'll go if you'll
Shake them away

Do like the darkies do, list'ning to a preacher way down south
They shake their bodies so, to and fro
With every shake, a lucky break

Proving that there's a way to chase your cares away
If you would lose your weary blues
Shake them away

I gotta blues, you gotta blues
All God's chillun gotta blues
Come and join a rebel and we'll shake off the devil
And we'll shake all over God's Heaven, Heaven, Heaven
Anyone objectin' to shakin' ain't going there, Heaven, Heaven
Gonna shake all over God's Heaven
I gotta shake, you gotta shake
All God's chillun gotta shake, shake, shake
Nothing could be sweeter than to shake with Saint Peter
When we shake all over God's Heaven, Heaven, Heaven
Anyone objectin' to shakin' ain't going there, Heaven, Heaven
Gonna shake all over God's Heaven

[Revised version:]
There's an old superstition 'way down south
Ev'rybody believes that trouble won't stay
If you shake it away
When they hold a revival way down south
Ev'rybody with care and trouble that day

Shaking the blues away, unhappy news away
If you are blue, it's easy to
Shake off your cares and troubles

Telling the blues to go, they may refuse to go
But as a rule, they'll go if you'll
Shake them away

Do like the voodoos do, list'ning to a voodoo melody
They shake their bodies so, to and fro
With every shake, a lucky break

Proving that there's a way to chase your cares away
If you would lose your weary blues
Shake 'em away

I've rhapsodized about "Old Devil Moon" in the FINIAN'S RAINBOW film several times before, but I'd also like to state a great love for "Come and Get It Day" on the soundtrack. Don't have the CD, but the gorgeous choral and orchestral sound is Ray Heindorf at his finest.

In order not to feel tremendous guilt over this chocolate cake I baked today, I did not ice it. Somehow, it's so dark and rich that it just didn't need anything except a fork putting it in my mouth. I (shamefully) had two pieces of it today.

The Summer may know François but I need to wait until November and then ask if she remembers. (The Bergman lyrics are as beautiful as the melody).

READING:  The Guinness Dictionary of Theatrical Quotations.

A couple of Noel Cowards:

"Two things should be cut -- the second act and that child's throat."  Coward after seeing GYPSY in London with its vivacious child star Bonnie Langford.

Coward took an earlier slam at Langford when she was three and was in the stage production of GONE WITH THE WIND where the horse famously defecated heavily onstage:

"There's nothing wrong with that show that shoving the child up the horse's arse won't cure."
Oh, poor Bonnie L!  (Who later showed up on Dr. Who as one of the good Doctor's companions.)

Enjoyed MONK tonight. No, the mystery wasn't the strongest, but poor Mr. Monk at the mercy of New York had one funny sequence after another. Tony Shaloub is priceless.

Possibly a better year (personally, I wouldn't know), but it would have made a lousy movie.

Okay now I feel deprived!

Where can I find a good fried chicken recipe where I don't need to deep fry it.  Or is there no point in me trying this if I have no clue what I'm doing.
Oh, what a leading question!  Does anyone here expect me to NOT come up with something from my favorite food guru, Alton Brown?

Here's a recipe from his classic episode, Fry Hard II: The Chicken (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_15279,00.html).  I've used this recipe, and it works!  It works great!  It's yummilicious!

CALLING ALL COMPUTER EXPERTS!

I just had the weirdest experience with my computer (no, Tomovoz, not that kind of experience).  I went to the Mall and I was gone about an hour.  Before I left, I signed out of AOL, but I left the computer on while I was gone.  When I got home, I signed back on to AOL and checked to see if I had received any e-mail from close and personal friends.  There were eight notices of Returned Mail sent to unknown addresses, all of which had been sent within the last hour, supposedly by me.  Since I had been gone, I knew that I hadn't sent anything, but (I suppose) just to convince myself that I was not crazy, I switched over to "Sent Mail".  And yes, there were the same eight messages that had been returned all sent from my account, and all dealing with Low Cost Mortgage.

How is this possible?  Would this be caused by a worm, or has someone figured out my password and accessed my account?

I immediately changed by password, but I don't know what else to do?

Nobody has gotten into your account.  These jerks just harvest e-mail addresses and send out whatever they want.  It's awful and there's nothing to be done about it except forward them with the complete HEADERS to abuse@aol.com (or whoever they suggest you sent them to).  If you look at the "show details" part of the e-mail, you'll see that they were not generated from you at all.

Just watched Paycheck, which Tammy Minoff recommended to me.  Anyone else see it?  I hadn't even heard of it (apparently it was a Christmas release and it bombed).

Actually, BK, that is what is so weird about these e-mails is that they did come from my account.  They were not only returned to me, but they were actually generated from my account and are listed in my sent mail box as having been sent from my account.

I happened to catch a bit of Ray Charles' funeral today. The whole thing was broadcast live on ABC. Willie Nelson sang a gorgeous, simple "Georgia."  Clint Eastwood spoke. He's looking very old. Stevie Wonder was incredible. It was really funny to see the white folks in the crowd clapping on the beat and trying to look soulful. That's the kind of funeral I'd like! Is it too late for me to become a black woman?

I stand corrected after investigating the old program, it was not Bonnie Langford...It was Jillie Mack, who's now Mrs. Tom Selleck.  I know I've seen Langford in something, but I can't remember.  I think she might have just left CATS at the time.

Good Evening/Morning!

A nice evening in front of the TV and chatting with various and sundried friends on the internet.

One of my friends is coming into town tomorrow with his sister.  They will be coming for a dog show - the sister's dog.  He said he'll call me when he gets in which will probably be early - well, early for me.  In any case: Do I really want to go to a dog show to watch a dog I've never seen before?  I've never been to a dog show.  And I'm not really sure I need to remedy that situation tomorrow morning. ;)

Decisions, decisions...

DR TCB - Keep an eye on your sent e-mail folder over the next 24 hours.  If you end up getting a lot of returned mail and/or you see a bunch of e-mail being sent from your address, just be sure to contact AOL's Customer Service to inform them that you did not authorize those e-mails.  -So they don't end up shutting down your account for a TOS Spam violation.  However, some of the "worms" out there are smart enough to mimic sending from your account, so there may not be anything wrong - well, there is, but there isn't.  Just keep an eye on things.  And to be really safe, you can also check your online time at keyword: Billing.  You can bring up a log of when you were on-line and logged in.

OK... Just in case I have to be up early... to watch some dog... Well, I'd be seeing my friend, Andy... But... Ah, well...

Goodnight.
