THE AGE OF ANXIETY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a little age and some anxiety, and now it is time for you to post until the anxious cows come home.

Good morning, all! I was up at 6 because I would like to finish Act One piano book of WHERE'S CHARLEY by 8:30 or so. I have to run down to Water Street, which is a horrid schlep, and pay my health insurance premium. I could not mail it last week because the Institute held up our payment a week and it's due tomorrow. Otherwise, i've been threatened with my insurance cut off for a year, and I've got another six months of life before I can look at Medicare. So, it's schlep or perish and I'm schlepping.

Following my adventures on the Lower East Side, I will stop by Toyland to check out the office, insure it's secure, and then head home to finish up the Act Two piano score.

While I was at the market on Sunday, I was looking over all of the oatmeal products and decided to try McCann's. I'm trying to decide if I prefer it to Quaker.

I didn't know McCanns made an instant oatmeal

I like their original stuff very much - but I am usually too rushed to cook it in the morning and up with the Quaker instant at work

You need a protein in the mix. Take a handful of walnuts or something.

I didn't even know we had a day

I certainly haven't heard about any of these "bridge" events

Have I been living in a cave?  Is this common knowledge?

Good morning

Hello!

I finished Act one! The score is a mess. Between Mathilde pincus and Don Walker, God alone knows what the original WHERE'S CHARLEY? sounded like. They have so screwed up the notes as well as the orchestration for the 1954 Music Theatre International edition: simplified reeds, left a score full of wrong notes. It's very maladroit.

Elmore - I always mean to ask you this -- how do you know that the scores are wrong?

If you never heard the original how do you know what it is supposed to sound like?

I can't believe that the news is saying that the Republicans are getting a "Late start" on running for President.  Good grief, give us a break.  They have started arriving in Iowa, no matter the party, any time they aren't in Iowa is a nice break for us.

I knew there was a day, didn't know when and had no idea about the bridges.   It's cold and snowing and when it's slick out a bridge is the worst place to be.

It's a gift! Not to be flippant, I can spot a wrong note or notes in several parts, I can see when an instrument is playing something that should clearly be another reed part because it's in a peculiar register or out of its harmonic placement, and other evidence like musical practice at the time the score was written, orchestrator's styles, etc. We also have a sketch, full of wrong notes, that references instruments no longer in the parts, like clarinet 3, and cues for flutes where now there is only one flute. What is always vague, and it turns into guesswork is the question of missing instruments like guitar and harp that might have originally been there: how much of the piano part looks like it might have been a harp or celesta? In 1948 could there have been a guitar? KISS ME KATE in the same year had harp, guitar and piano in the pit.

I was up with an upset stomach most of the night.   I've got to go to work and do a 10:00 AM hearing, but will probably fill a box with work and bring it home fro the rest of the day.  There's nothing on the schedule today, so that will work fine.   The weather is going to hell in a handbasket tonight and we have a very busy day scheduled tomorrow, oh great.

Larry - Why did the original WHERE'S CHARLEY not have a cast recording?  or has this been discussed already?

All musical recreation/restoration depends on the taste and experience of the editor. While there was much to admire about John McGlinn's work, he never looked at all of the evidence and reached the correct conclusion. Instead, he read enough about the show's history to form an opinion on what the show should be for him, ignoring evidence that refuted his opinion, and made the restoration conform to his concept. That's a bit of a fraud, I think.
