Well, you've read the notes, the notes were mellow, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're in a MOOlow MOOd.
-
And the word of the day is: HESTERNAL!
-
Will we never get to page two?
-
I'm so mellow. I'm wearing yellow. Perhaps I'll eat some Jell-O. Maybe call someone and say Hell-O.
-
No one in the jernt but me and George and George is sitting there like so much fish.
-
For me, the 60s was a great decade for songs. I love Moon River and Days Of Wine and Roses. I love Sealed With A Kiss and She Cried.
-
This isn't from the sixties, but since you're in such a mellow mood, maybe you need a Mellow Tone:
IN A MELLOW TONE
By Duke Ellington/Milt Gabler
In a mellow tone
Feelin' fancy free
And I'm not alone
I've got company
Everything's ok
The live-long day
With this mellow song
I can't go wrong
In a mellow tone
That's the way to live
If you mope and groan
Something's gotta give
Just go your way
And laugh and play
You know there's joy unknown
In a mellow tone
In a mellow tone
that's the way to live
If you mope and groan
Something's got to give
Just go your way
And laugh and play
You know there's joy unknown
In a mellow tone
Just go your way
And laugh and play
You know there's joy unknown
In a mellow tone
;D

BK, do you know this song? I wonder if it's something that Guy Haines might like to sing. I only know The Manhattan Transfer's version (I got the lyrics from their website (http://www.tmtfanclub.com/pastiche.html)), but I just love this song and their version of it. :)
-
Well, I must toddle off to the bedroom environment for my mellow sleep. I've been watching ten or fifteen minutes of Acorn Antiques - The Musical every night - I think you probably have to know the series to truly get it, but it's very amusing and enjoyable.
-
Good night, BK. I'm off to bed, also. 8)

TOTD: (Way too difficult).
For Starters:
Since I Fell For You - Lenny Welch
Crawling Back - Roy Orbison
If I Didn't Have A Dime to Play The Jukebox - Gene Pitney
Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields - The Beatles
It's a Lonely Town - Gene McDaniels
The Night Has 1,000 Eyes - Bobby Vee
Hello Mary Lou - Rick Nelson
His Latest Flame - Elvis Presley
House Of The Rising Sun - The Animals
And When I Die - Blood Sweat & Tears
-
Good morning, all!
Dear Friend BK, "The past is another country; they do things differently there" is the great opening line from the novel THE GO-BETWEEN, and I believe Harold Pinter keeps the line in his screenplay.
Tom Murray, my able Dr Watson is back in town today, so we will be working on THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER for several hours. I cannot remember if we are going beyond noon, and if we are not, I shall hie myself over to RealMusic and maybe edit Act Two of JOSEPH AND . . . DREAMCOAT.
When I get back, I'll call my Dad at the hospital, and rumble through more 2006 receipts.

RE: the ending. Noooooooooooo!!!!! First we assumed claire was 17 and then last week they announced she was 15 (??? who becomes co-captain at 15?). And now peter is her uncle! I'm guessing a lot of people will not be happy by this (although apparently the promos ruined the surprise). I guess i stopped watching them at the right time. Although it was hard not watching the preview for next week.
I am one of those people who liked the chemistry between peter and claire (when i thought she was going to be turning 18). But i guess the writers wanted to make sure there was absolutely no possibility of that.
So is hiro's father gone for good. That was sort of short and slightly pointless.
I can't say i was surprised by the reveal of claire's father. I mean there are only a handful of people who are in the right age group. and even fewer who are heroes.
The whole niki thing was weird. Her getting out of jail. And i don't really get how she can be in the mirror.
I like hiro a lot better with his powers. He's not as cute without the little squint.
I like peter and claude a lot. I like the cheerleader a lot.

BK, I love the Go-Between. It's just a delicious, wonderful movie with great performances by Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Edward Fox, Margaret Leighton, et al. For my money, it was the best film of the year it came out.
TOD, just off the top of my head:
The Impossible Dream
Daydreamer
The Shelter of Your Arms
He's A Rebel
Hundred Pounds of Clay
Every Breath I Take (Gene Pitney version)
His Latest Flame (have to go with Tomovoz on this one)
Baby, The Rain Must Fall
Once Upon Time
Just A Little Loving
I'm sure if I researched it or thought about it a little longer, there be a whole different ten, but I'll stick with this for the nonce.

Re: HEROES
***** HERE THERE BE SPOILERS *****
I was disappointed with the reveal of Clair's birth father--it does pretty much dead end any possibility of a future relationship between her and Peter. Also, it's just too coincidental that another two SG's got together at some point to conceive an SG child--they already have this situation with Nikki, D.L. and Micha. I think it just makes the storyline too pat and confined.
Also disappointed with Hiro's family turing out to be wealthy and well connected. Did I miss anything in the early episodes that established him as anything but a guy stuck in a drudge job? It sort of takes away from his quest to be a true hero knowing that he always has his family to fall back on.
But I'm being picky. I still overall find this show fun and exciting to watch and I'm coming to like it more than LOST.

TOD: Getting the list down to ten is not an easy task...so here is a top ten list which, as CP says, could change if asked again. But I love all ten of these songs.
1. Walk Away Renee - The Left Banke
2. In the Year 2525 - Zager and Evans
3. 96 Tears - ? and the Mysterians
4. Bristol Stomp - The Dovells
5. Born Free - Andy Williams
6. Classical Gas - Mason Williams
7. To Sir With Love - Lulu
8. Georgy Girl - The Seekers
9. Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock
10. The Look of Love - Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66
All of these songs guarantee that the car radio will get turned up really loud (to drown out my singing).

Honorable mention must go to any number of Henry Mancini hits of that decade!

NEW YORKER (http://www.newyorker.com/shouts/content/articles/070212sh_shouts_rudnick#23top)
SHEEPISH
by Paul Rudnick
...
Enough already. I’m Troy, a gay sheep, and I’ll tell you the truth. Although I’m conflicted about calling myself a gay sheep, because I don’t like to think that my sexuality defines me; let’s just say that I’m a sheep who happens to be gay. Being gay is just a simple biological fact, like having a fleecy undercoat or bleating while you’re being shorn, or getting aroused whenever you see a bulky turtleneck sweater.
When I was growing up, I assumed that I’d be just like everybody else, and that someday I’d be bred with a ewe and slaughtered. But, of course, those other feelings were always there; even when I was only a few years old I would gaze at another male lamb and think about sharing a stall, with just enough hay and maybe a nice mid-century trough. I tried not to focus on my urges, and whenever my mom caught me rubbing up against the fence post that I called Skipper I’d pretend I had lice. But as the years went by I started to act on my desires, first with Ed, who was a ram, if you know what I mean. Later, I became involved with Rick, a sheep my own age, although after our encounters Rick would always claim that he was drunk on compost, and he’d butt me with his head and insist, “Dude, let’s go get us some mutton.”
Finally, my dad found me with Rick, and he flew into a blind rage, yelling that he had no son, and that if I was lucky I’d end up as a cheap Peruvian cardigan worn by a truck-stop hooker in Alaska. And so I ran away, and I went wild. I experimented with everyone and everything. Bulls. Mules. Duck, duck, goose. I found out exactly why they’re called the Three Little Pigs. Call me Old McDonald, because I had the farm. I even made some adult films, and maybe you’ve heard of them: “Wet Wool,” “Lassie, Come Here,” and the mega-selling “Hoof and Mouth.” Then, one morning, I woke up next to a horse, a hen, and an ear of corn—that’s right, all the food groups. And I was disgusted with myself. What was I, livestock?

TOD:
I couldn't begin the name them all. Just Broadway show scores where I love every song (MAME, SWEET CHARITY, HOW TO SUCCEED, ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, OLIVER, FUNNY GIRL, BYE BYE BIRDIE, CAMELOT, I DO! I DO!, CABARET, 1776, and on and on and on) would go on for pages.
Then you have great movie songs (scores like MARY POPPINS and single items like "Moon River" or "Charade") could go on for pages.
And then pop songs like most of what Petula Clark sang and the Supremes and Peter, Paul, and Mary and then single hits by groups like The FOur Tops, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, the Beatles. Oh, my, it would be an endless list, and I couldn't possibly pick favorites.
-
I do have those two hours of dramatic shows from last night to watch today, and then I guess I'll watch OPEN SEASON on Blu-ray. That should lead up to another very full night of TV with several timeslots containing three shows that I love watching: (e.g. 9 p.m. has VERONICA MARS, HOUSE, and L&O:CI; 10 p.m. has L&O:SVU, BOSTON LEGAL, and DIRT). Argh!

Walkin' After Midnight--more PC

Some, yes. But since there are supposedly only 34 names on the List, it strikes me as unlikely that there would be more than one set matching up.

UNCHAINED MELODY (Could be from the '50's but I wasn't aware of it until the '60's)--my all-time favorite pop song.
The great Duke Ellington vocalist, Al Hibbler, had a chart topper version in 1955!
OracleBand (http://www.oracleband.net/Lyrics/unchained_melody.htm)
Written by Hy Zaret and Alex North for the 1955 movie "Unchained". The movie starred Elroy (Crazy Legs) Hirsch and Barbara Hale (of Perry Mason fame)
Performed in the movie by Todd Duncan, (the original baritone in Gershwin's "Porgy & Bess")
An instrumental version of the song by Les Baxter in 1955 went to #1
Also in 1955 a version by Al Hibbler went to #3 on the charts. Other artists charting with this song in 1955 included Roy Hamilton (#5), June Valli (#29)
Best known version today performed by The Righteous Brothers, who hit # 4 on the Top 40 charts in 1965
Harry Belafonte sang it at the 1956 Academy Awards.
My favorite is the Lettermen version of 1962

DR JoseSPiano: You asked a question last night that I've only just read (yes, I'm CAUGHT UP!).
I am someone who has begun ridding myself of those space-hog jewel cases...those dust-catching, shatter-at-a-glance UNprotective covers that CDs come in.
My solution: Aluminum CD megacases. They come in different sizes, some holding 400-plus, others 500-plus, and the ones I have which hold 1,000-plus. They are also available to hold a greater capacity (up to 2,000, I think).
At any rate, I have three of these cases that hold 1,000. I also invested in gatefold polypropylene covers to preserve my inserts (they will also hold CDs, if you wish to get them for that purpose). You can store a whole lot of these in the space a handful of jewel cases takes up.
First, here's what my cases look like (you can also get them with wheels and a pull-out handle, if you so desire):
-
And this is what the gatefold protective covers look like:
-
You Can Get Them With Wheels - that's the title of my new Uptempo song.
-
This morning: 23 outside, 48 degrees in my kitchen. I was glad to get to work where I could be warm!
-
Just getting rid of the jewelcases makes a HUGE difference in my small condo. I shall soon be able to rid myself of my CD shelves...one holds 575, another holds 1,000 and two others are rotatable and hold about 750 CDs/DVDs each.
SPACE HOGS, all of them.
-
I stack my three aluminum cases...and they make a nice occasional table.
-
The excitement is over. A car was stolen and crashed nearby. Sandra's preschool and the nearby middle school were in lockdown. The bad guy was apprehended, according to the news, about a half mile from here.

Re: "HEROES"
SPOILERS
I loved all the storyline segments. I loved the entire episode.
I had a moment of disbelief upon the revelation that Nathan is Claire's father. It didn't seem feasible because I presumed Nathan was only a couple of years older than Peter. But clearly, Nathan is in his 30s. Assuming the thing between Nathan and Claire's mother was a youthful fling when he was between 18 and 20, then he's at least 33, but more probably his late 30s. Which, actually, is closer to actor Adrian Pasdar's 41 years.
I never thought much about how old Peter might be, but his character could be anywhere between 20 and 29, so far as I know. My initial thoughts were based on his appearance, and if any clues have been given about his intended age, I've ignored them up until now.
Anyway, it was a bitchin' episode. I'm even enjoying the Nicki/Jessica story now that it isn't dominating each episode.

He wasn't doing much, but did do the occasional contract, and did get things up at amazon and cdbaby. This fellow, despite the fact that I did him a rather major favor (in so many ways) back in 2001, has not responded to an e-mail or phone call in over three months (I finally stopped trying and left him a final, rather strong message), and has basically left me on my own to deal with everything. And today, I find out that he didn't forward me certain e-mails from CD Baby, which is why a couple of albums have never made it to iTunes. All the CD Baby e-mails now come to me directly, but what a creep he turned out to be. We know he's around because he boldly posts on several theater chat boards - and I know he knows I occasionally read those boards. I tell you - people never cease to astonish and amaze me - both in good and bad ways - unfortunately, for this gentleman it's the latter.

So, I have just spent time I didn't need to spend fixing his errors.

Australian University Investigates Cadaver Abuse
Tuesday , February 06, 2007
Four staff members at an Australian university are being investigated for mishandling body parts, the university's vice-chancellor said Tuesday.
The University of New South Wales' school of anatomy in Sydney had its license to conduct anatomy classes revoked after an audit revealed remains were sexually interfered with and piled together in coffins.

I read somewhere that they said peter was 26. It was on one of the HEROES message boards. I'm not sure when it was mentioned. But now we supposedly know that claire is 15 and peter 26.
I think when they met, i personally assumed claire was 17 going to turn 18. And i figured peter was early 20s (since it seemed like he had just started being a nurse).

They count, but not for Joan. But keep listing because out of lists come ideas.
bk, you can bitch slap me from here to eternity, but I don't know who Joan Ryan is. I am really bad with names and faces, voices, etc... Anyhow, what kind of "person" is she? Is she a Merman type and sometime more subtle? That would help in trying to think of up-beat songs.
-
DR Derbrucer, I heard that Snickers pulled their Super Bowl ad since there were some objections.
This was the commercial i referred to yesterday that had two men eating at 2 ends of a snickers bar and they accidently sort of kiss (well their mouthes meet). They are macho so they sort of freak and then decide to do something manly and pull out huge chunks of chest hair.
I can see why some people would be upset. But it was a pretty original and funny commercial. One of the best i thought in terms of originality and getting people to remember the brand name.
-
DR Ron Pulliam - Thanks for the heads up on the CD cases. They look like DJ gear - which is a good thing since they will match my keyboard equipment. ;)

And this is what the gatefold protective covers look like:
So do you use the gatefold sleeves to hold your CDs and the inserts?
-
Tonight i will watch AMERICAN IDOL. I'm hopping the audition shows will be over. But i'm guessing we have 2 more nights of them.
Then comes my favorite part of the competition. Watching the 100 or so best.
I wonder if that is anyone else's favorite part. I'm guessing most people would say the bad auditions are their favorite part. Or the final 32. Or even the final 12.
-
Up until now, I've never been a Michael John LaChiusa fan, and I don't think I am now, but I'm really enjoying lBernarda Alba maybe it's the material or the voices, but I really like it. Who knew?
-
So do you use the gatefold sleeves to hold your CDs and the inserts?
No, the CDs go into the sleeves that come with the cases. The cases have 500 sleeves, and there is space on both sides of each sleeve to store one CD.
Of course, you can do it how you wish. You could keep the insert on one side of each tray sleeve.
I keep the inserts and traycards (front and back) in the polypropylene gatefold sleeves that I bought separately from the storage case system. I am storing them in boxes....they take up much less room now.
-
Just getting rid of the jewelcases makes a HUGE difference in my small condo. I shall soon be able to rid myself of my CD shelves...one holds 575, another holds 1,000 and two others are rotatable and hold about 750 CDs/DVDs each.
SPACE HOGS, all of them.
Did you give you old jewel cases to used CD store in your area? or did you just dump them in the trash?
-
No, the CDs go into the sleeves that come with the cases. I keep the inserts and traycards (front and back) in the sleeves. Am storing them in boxes....they take up much less room now.
Ah, OK - Didn't realize here were sleeves that already came with the cases.

Through the magic of YouTube, I've just discovered a heretofore unknown (to me) Shirley MacLaine movie--JOHN GOLDFARB, PLEASE COME HOME (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059336/). It looks like a wonderfully silly 60s comedy. It's not available on DVD or on VHS, for that matter. I want to see it! Anyone ever catch it? Has it ever been on TCM?
-
Well...one of MY favorite UP Tempo songs, that I love to see/hear live is:
RUMBLE
A song Frank Loesser wrote for Betty Hutton - and a more up tempo persona there NEVER was!
"Stuff Like That There" and "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief", and "Square in the Social Circle" are all gems of a kind.
-
Ah, OK - Didn't realize here were sleeves that already came with the cases.

You're actually liking Bernarda Alba? Hmm... ;)
Do you have the OCR of See What I Wanna See yet? Now that's a MJL show and score that I really did like. Heck, I even cried during the second act.
*Although, Bernarda Alba does work better on disc than it did on stage, imho.
-
Did you give you old jewel cases to used CD store in your area? or did you just dump them in the trash?
I've brought some in for co-workers. And I've trashed some. I tried to recycle, but no one local is actually "accepting" plastic jewelcases.
Of course, if I were motivated, I'd clean them, bundle them up in groups of 50 or 100 and sell them on EBay.
-
You could bundle them up in batches of 25, tie a ribbon around them and give them out as prezzies, too.

DR Matthew - RE: Pippin - I had heard that the new version was in the works, but I wasn't sure when it was going to be available.
However, I do have to say that I'm sort of fond of that messy manuscript piano/vocal score. -Did they at least retain the "Ben" marking in the opening of "Magic To Do"? ;)
-
Our version two years ago ended Act One with a short Magic to Do reprise and then intermission...

I gave my 5,6 and 7 grade students a long term extra credit assignment that was basically, watch American Idol and keep a journal every from every episode from beginning to the end. And because I gave the assignment, I have to watch every episode and the audition's are the WORST part of the show. Of course, the students think they are the best.

Our version two years ago ended Act One with a short Magic to Do reprise and then intermission...
That's the one we have. I know bk mentioned last night that he remembers Pippin not having an intermission and that's correct. Lots of community theatres need that intermission to make money and such and it became traditional to end "act one" with "Morning Glow". I remember the first time I did the show, we ending with "Morning Glow" and started "Act Two" with the "maestoso" section of "Morning Glow" and went forward from there.
The one thing I don't like about the new act break is that Act Two starts with dialogue and then into "Right Track", no entr'acte or anything. It's a little strange just "starting" an act like that.
DR Jose, I was quite fond of the manuscript version of the show myself and found myself referring back to it for cues and such. And yes, they removed "Ben" from the new score. Now if they could just remove "Mary" from the Peter Pan score :)

DR Derbrucer, I heard that Snickers pulled their Super Bowl ad since there were some objections.
There was even more objections to their web site where they posted alternative endings for the ad. (All have been pulled)
SOUTHERN VOICE (http://www.southernvoice.com/thelatest/thelatest.cfm?blog_id=11242)
The ad then directed viewers to a website to pick from three other alternative endings with the most popular pick to air during the Daytona 500 race on Feb. 18.
The alternate endings to select from, instead of ripping out chest hair, were: 1) the men drinking motor oil; 2) beating each other up with a wrench and the hood of the car; 3) or a third mechanic stepping between them, flipping his hair, and asking, "Is there room for three on this love boat?"
The website also included negative reaction from several players from the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears as they viewed the commercial.
The Human Rights Campaign issued a statement Monday decrying Snickers for what it deemed an anti-gay message as well as condoning gay bashing.
help put them in touch with any number of GLBT Americans who have suffered hate crimes,” said HRC President Joe Solmonese.
"Is Snickers suggesting that people who eat their candy bars are cavemen? It's an odd market to court, particularly after the Isaiah Washington flap a couple weeks ago, which clearly showed that there's a strong distaste out there for people who portray themselves as anti-gay or holding on to old prejudices and stereotypes,” he added.
But Cyd Zeigler of Outsports.com, a gay sports website, said the reaction by groups like HRC has been over the top.
“I watched the Super Bowl with about 30 gay men and when the ad aired, people laughed,” he said. “There are so many bigger issues than fighting a candy bar ad. A lot of people like me thought the ad was making fun of straight guys because of the idiotic and stupid things they’ll do to say they are manly.”

DENVER (AP) - One of four ministers who oversaw three weeks of intensive counseling for the Rev. Ted Haggard said the disgraced minister emerged convinced that he is "completely heterosexual."
Haggard also said his sexual contact with men was limited to the former male prostitute who came forward with sexual allegations, the Rev. Tim Ralph of Larkspur told The Denver Post for a story in Tuesday's edition.
"He is completely heterosexual," Ralph said. "That is something he discovered. It was the acting-out situations where things took place. It wasn't a constant thing."

As for the discussion, it was interesting. They had actually showed the commercial on the show yesterday, and Elizabeth thought it was her favorite Superbowl commercial. -And I was actually surprised that Rosie did not make a comment about it at the time. However, in the meantime, GLAAD had e-mailed Rosie...

I began my afternoon viewing with last night's CSI: MIAMI episode. I had read ahead of time that one of the regulars was going to be hurt, and since Alexx has had the least exposure to the outside and injury, I just assumed it would be she (and it was, kind of). Of course, the biggest shock was saved for the final sequence when another took a bullet. A surprise but I know he will be fine. The actor is not leaving the show. The last time an actor on this show was killed, it was pretty well known he was going to be written out of the show early in that season (Season 3). I also knew it was going to be a two part episode, so the cliffhanger wasn't a surprise either.
To be honest, I was hoping Natalia Boa Vista would be the one injured; she is BY FAR my least favorite character on the show, but as she was just promoted to regular this season, I figured that wasn't going to happen.
-
...Just watching "Oprah" right now, and they showed a preview for tomorrow's show:
This Is the Year to Declutter Your Life!
And the special guest will be Peter Walsh. -How timely.

The topic may be too limited in appeal but DR MBarnum and myself would have no problem listing ten favourite instrumental hits of the 60's (excluding movie themes).
It was the decade for such music. Mike has already listed "Classical Gas".

Where are you Jeanne?
We finally got above zero here for the first time in nearly a week!
A virtual heatwave... Break out the bathing suits!
DR DAKOTA CELT,
You, my dear, are much hardier than I. I am a California girl living in Virginia. Normal winters I'm fine--I learned how to shop for a WARM coat (went up to Canada and a couple Canadians showed me what to look for) and now have most of the gear. But yesterday and today our temps and wind chill are the lowest they've been in 10 years, plus my house is drafty. I feel warmer today and even ran errands comfortably (thank God for my car's heated seats!). Also, this winter the temps have bounced around a lot--one day it's 70, then next it falls to 30. Much better when the temps are consistent. I do think a lot of it is knowing how to dress and having the right clothes. I need to invest in a warm hat.
Perhaps you could send me that moose DERBRUCER invited in?
-
In Old Town? Or more toward Mount Vernon?
I'll PM you.

I subscribe to the saying at work that "if a cluttered desk is the sign of a cluttered mind, what then is an empty desk the sign of?"

-
Next came last night's STUDIO 60, a frustrating episode with a lot of talk and much of it pointless. Matt and Harriet - will this ever be over? The revelation from Jordan to Danny about her feelings - oh, so cute. Couldn't she have just talked it out face to face? Oh, not enough drama or cutsey-poo stuff. And the entire Korean cellist storyline with the father actually able to speak English, argh! I got VERY irritated.
The entire snake-coyote plot was also run into the ground.
This should NEVER have been a two part episode. There wasn't really enough story for one hour, much less two.
-
Next, I watched the Blu-ray of OPEN SEASON, a CGI animated effort from Sony. The animation in high def was breathtaking; the movie was only OK. Naturally, its invention and humor can't hold a candle to even the least of the Pixar films, and in charm, I thought even last year's OVER THE HEDGE was better.

When the film was over, I watched some of the special features. I began with the animated short "Boog and Elliot's Midnight Bun Run," a fun little four minute short subject.
Next, there was a ten minute short on the voice cast for the film made up of some well-known names in the business: Martin Lawrence, Debra Messing, Ashton Kutcher. Billy Connelly, Gary Sinese (who was the best thing in the film).
And then there was a 15 minute "making of" featurette which explains the layering process in which one of these CGI animations gets made. OK information and a nice start to Sony's animation division.
-
A relative of mine who lives in Winnepeg, MB, had temps down to -40 and that is NOT the windchill.
Yes, some Canadians I know practically brag about how it gets to 40 below. But they also all go to Florida frequently.
-
In re Jennifer's question about AMERICAN IDOL, yes, tonight features the San Antonio auditions and tomorrow night is a clip show featuring the best and worst of the auditioning contestants. I will watch tonight but not tomorrow night.
I like the Hollywood round (next week) very much, but I never feel like it's given a fair shake. We have weeks of auditions, and only two nights to view the 100+ contestants who were deemed talented enough for the next round. I would like to see the coverage of this part of the competition upped and the audition rounds trimmed by a week. It's extremely frustrating not being able to hear some of the good singers before they're given the shaft.
-
Well, I left work at 2:30pm and my usual 40-minute commute took me an hour and a half. I was really feeling sorry for my coworkers who were scheduled to work 'til 9pm, but the Library's website just told me that all locations closed at 4:30. Vibes that everybody gets home safely.
The snow is beautiful now that I can watch it from the comfort of my kitchen, where I just put a meat loaf in the oven.
-
David Letterman was a singer in 1962?? Who knew?
;)
Very good, GEORGE.
-
The topic may be too limited in appeal but DR MBarnum and myself would have no problem listing ten favourite instrumental hits of the 60's (excluding movie themes).
It was the decade for such music. Mike has already listed "Classical Gas".
"Grazing in the Grass" is a gas...!
-
And don't forget about "The Cowsills"!
-
"Grazing in the Grass" is a gas...!
Mr Masekala was an excellent Grazer. He Groze with distinction.
-
I Shall list the Cowsills with my bigger list including the rain and the park and other things.
-
I need recommendations on two items:
1. A good, non-oil, non-fragrant skin moisturizer (for my hands)
2. A complete THE MAGIC FLUTE recording.
Re #1: Is there a Trader Joe's near you? Due to allergies, I'm always looking for unscented products. TJ's has an inexpensive moisturizer that is also unscented that is comparable with much more expensive brands. It's simply called Moisturizing Lotion--herbal blend with aloe. It's not at all greasy and is both an excellent product and an excellent value. Origins also has a nice unscented body lotion called Precipitation, but it's much more expensive.
-
All right, put your thinking caps on - we need uptempo songs for Joan Ryan's show - she's very strange about uptempo songs and feels they're all corny - until we find one that I can do something with to make it okay. So, let's have some uptempo songs - they have to be known, not too chestnutty (unless you love it) and some should be from shows.
Knowing When To Leave
-
Jack, the Leslie Uggams segment is VERY funny!!!
OMG!! :o I almost couldn't watch it because it was so embarrasingly funny! ;D
-
Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but Barbara McNair died.
-
bk, you can bitch slap me from here to eternity, but I don't know who Joan Ryan is. I am really bad with names and faces, voices, etc... Anyhow, what kind of "person" is she? Is she a Merman type and sometime more subtle? That would help in trying to think of up-beat songs.
I just ordered her new album out of support for Kritzerland. After her "Meadowlark" on the Strouse/Schwartz & Schwartz recording, I am reticent. Oh, yes, I am reticent.
-
Well...one of MY favorite UP Tempo songs, that I love to see/hear live is:
RUMBLE
A song Frank Loesser wrote for Betty Hutton - and a more up tempo persona there NEVER was!
In Christopher Isherwood's diaries, he says the Hollywood gossip on Betty Hutton is that she'd be a nymphomaniac if they could slow her down.
-
...Just watching "Oprah" right now, and they showed a preview for tomorrow's show:
This Is the Year to Declutter Your Life!
And the special guest will be Peter Walsh. -How timely.
Hmm...maybe I should record this. ;)
-
...And the "sad" part, is that she actually knew the words during the dress rehearsal.
However, my "favorite" Capitol Fourth moment was when Patti LuPone was singing and Henry Mancini was conducting. Well, Mr. Mancini started the song off a bit slow... And the look on Ms. LuPone's face... YIKES!
During the "Kiri Sings Gershwin" Ms Te Kanawa kept complaining that Nelson Riddle conducted her "Blue skies" album too slowly. I listened to it on Sunday and liked his tempi. He died shortly after completing the recording. I'm convinced the evil bitch killed him.
-
Hmm...maybe I should record this. ;)
I must confess I don't know from Peter Walsh. I thought it was "John Walsh" and figured decluttering my life would include programming out all his hyper-self-serving programming (yes, I'm aware he started his crime-busting after his own son was abducted-murdered...but a little John Walsh goes a very long way).
I see that Peter Walsh is an Ozzie.
-
I need recommendations on two items:
1. A good, non-oil, non-fragrant skin moisturizer (for my hands)
2. A complete THE MAGIC FLUTE recording.
DR Dan(the Man), you're on your own for moisturizer, but I know and love the MAGIC FLUTE. By recording, do you mean CD or DVD? My favorite DVD is the film made by Ingmar Bergman, and my second favorite of a stage performance is this one with the late great Lucia Popp.
-
Now, as to CD, my favorite recording is Beernard Haitink's with the late great Lucia Popp.
-
This recording using authentic period instruments is also quite wonderful.
-
From the sublime Mozart to my daily health update: this morning, the oncologist signed off on my dad and told him that he should begin hospice care. I am dealing all right but quite melancholic over the fact that my time with him is at a premium.
-
Perhaps you could send me that moose DERBRUCER invited in?
My dear he is on his way....
You are rigiht is how you dress and the knowledge that goes into it. Ironically, a gift I got as a high school graduation present at the time I thought it was odd until winter came. God was I thankful for the LONGJOHNS!!! NDSU is a large spread out campus.

Here are my Sondheim recommendations (I can't remember if any of these have already been mentioned...and I don't know what you mean by "chestnutty"):
Ah! But Underneath
Another Hundred People
Being Alive
Broadway Baby
Everybody Says Don't
The Girls of Summer
Make the Most of Your Music
Marry Me a Little
The Miller's Son
That Dirty Old Man
You Could Drive a Person Crazy
What More Do I Need?
And what about "If You Hadn't But You Did" (not by Sondheim)?
-
Here are my Sondheim recommendations (I can't remember if any of these have already been mentioned...and I don't know what you mean by "chestnutty"):...
Okay, I just looked up that usage of "chestnut" (not the actual nut definition): An old, frequently repeated joke, story, or song.
Alrighty, then. ::)
I don't care...I love them all! ;D

I need recommendations on two items:

I'm a fan of Shikai's Borage Dry Skin Therapy Hand Cream. I usually pick it up at the Whole Foods - or Whole Body if you have one of the separate beauty products stores in your area. Trader Joe's actually used to carry it before they developed their own hand cream - see DR Jeanne's post above. -I also like the their Body Lotion and Foot Cream too.

As for The Magic Flute, there is the classic Klemperer Set on EMI:

But I'm also a fan of the recent one William Christie set that DR elmore recommended earlier.

Back from a good work session - several decisions made and arrangements done. We're moving right along.
I recommend Knowing When To Leave to everyone, but we just did it in Linda Purl's act, so it's a no go here. I think elmore will be happy with Joan's CD - I really didn't let her go to the Meadowlark place.

Caught up with e-mails and telephonic calls. I had another call from a post office person yesterday (from the branch where the problems have occurred) - he left a message yesterday along with a phone number - that number has been busy everytime I've called it. I just called the regular number - they have no idea why he'd leave a number that's always busy. He'll be back in a half-hour and I guess we'll have a little chat then.
-
No. Its a Book of the Month Club (or whatever) issue . Larry did some orchestrations for his close and personal favourite John McGlinn. I have the record set. I guess the Sondheim set is better known.
-
DR Elmore - I have forgotten the answer if I even asked it! Is "Songs Of New York" available On CD?
No longer. Book-of-the-Month Club dropped it ages ago from their catalogue. I hardly ever see it on eBay. I have a set that I entered into my iTunes and I could burn you CDs if you would like.

Nope! This was a 2-CD/2-LP compilation of New York songs from the 1890s through 1984 or so.

I could say so much about Maestro McGlinn and his research, but since I am bound by silence, I will say nothing.
The Sondheim set hardly ever shows up as well.

Good Evening!
I just had some breakfast for dinner: scrambled eggs with cheese and a bagel. Good and comforting. And best of all, I didn't have to venture out into the cold for din-din.
-
Of course, now I want some chocolate, but there's none in the apartment right now. Well, there is that box of liquer-filled chocolates I received at Christmas, but I'm not really in the mood for those right now.

I saw it when it came out. A loooooong time ago!

Just how do you get through 11,000 people in one day?

Larry, I know it's hard and there isn't much to say that doesn't sound cliched or worse. Having gone through it with my father in 1993 I do think that if the hospice care is good, it can be one of the best things to come out of all this. I'm a big fan of hospice care, having seen what it did for my father and my family. Even if/when you're ready for it, the passing still hurts but good hospice care (both emotional and physical) can make the hurt more understandable even though it doesn't take away the pain.

However... I did hear the property manager and the boiler/radiator people out in the hall earlier today - and going up and down the stairs to the basement... And from the way the apartment feels right now, it feels like they may have adjusted the thermostat.

Apart from Mr Laine's well-known hits, he recorded with the following partners:
Jo Stafford
Doris Day
Buck Clayton

Jimmy Boyd
Johnnie Ray

DR Jose - what's in Memphis?
The Unified Professional Theatre Auditions - UPTAs for short.
www.upta.org
This will be my third of fourth year playing for them. They went from a three-day to a four-day format last year, and since I was busy with Lestat, I was not able to play for them last year, so this will be my first time going four days in a row. Thankfully, they guy who runs the auditions makes sure the days run smoothly and non-hectic-ly.
I will be playing for the grand-daddy - or is it grand-mammy? - of all theatre conferences in March in Atlanta: Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETCs). And I've been playing for them for the past 15 years or so.

LLBean has a cap with ear muffs. You might find a hat with a scarf attached, I suggest wearing a second scarf as well. Don't forget to wrap a scarf around your face and neck. On really cold days I have one of those things that goes over your head and down your neck. I used to have a face mask.
-
Thanks for the update, DR Jose!
I just did something I've never done before - sent an email, via her website, to Oprah. Yesterday's show featured frump-to-glam makeovers and they did something that really annoys me. At least 2 of the "befores" were wearing glasses and, of course, as "afters" they were not. It really peeves me when our culture wants to frump somebody up, they put glasses on them and when they want to unfrump someone, off come the glasses.
-
Ok, I'll confess. This is the first time I've ever watched THE CLOSER and I like it a lot. Oy! Now I guess I need to start from the beginning...

Gunfight at the OK Corral
3:10 To Yuma
The Hanging Tree

I have two words for you.....Cuddle Duds. Best long underwear for women you can get. They are thin but warm. The key is layers and covering all exposed skin outside. Also keep your feel warm. It makes a huge difference. In the house put a throw blanket over you when you're sitting or on the couch. It makes a huge difference.

I agree with DR BEN. The best that can happen at this point is for your dad to have the best care and be kept comfortable. Hospice people are generally very caring and it will take a load off you and other family members. That may help to lessen family conflicts, which I think would be best for both you and your dad. Less stress for your dad may mean that he'll be with you a few months longer.
My best to you.

And here it is:
The Weeding Song (http://www.billericalibrary.org/staff/weeding.htm)
And it's from Iowa!
This is pretty darned funny! I printed it and gave copies to our selectors. ;D
-
As of April 6 all the libraries in our county will be closed. I think they are taking weeding to an extreme.
Yikes! :o Did they run out of money??

LLBean has a cap with ear muffs. You might find a hat with a scarf attached, I suggest wearing a second scarf as well. Don't forget to wrap a scarf around your face and neck. On really cold days I have one of those things that goes over your head and down your neck. I used to have a face mask.
DR JANE,
Thank you. You are quite right. I've resisted this last step--vanity! I've found that HOW you wrap the scarf makes a big difference. It's the wind that gets you.

Yes, it's a bit too easy, isn't it?

I have two words for you.....Cuddle Duds. Best long underwear for women you can get. They are thin but warm. The key is layers and covering all exposed skin outside. Also keep your feel warm. It makes a huge difference. In the house put a throw blanket over you when you're sitting or on the couch. It makes a huge difference.
CUDDLE DUDS??!! I've never heard of such! I will most definitely look for some. Since this could be called an underwear-oriented website--UNDERPANTS!-- I will say that the wool longjohns are warm, but are also thick. I'd like to find some socks that are warm but thin.
As for the throw while on the couch, I use two! My den is small and it's impossible to avoid the draft. Ah, the concessions I make to live in this wonderful old house.
Thanks for the tips.
-
DerBrucer-Cool pic of the day.
Cillaliz-Yes, watch THE CLOSER from the beginning if you can.
Jeanne-I live in Cuddl Duds most of the year. Here is a sample link to purchasing them on-line…. http://www.barenecessities.com/search.asp?drv=11968&mode=1&cm_mmc=GLSR-_-cuddl%20duds-_-CuddlDuds-_-A&source=GoogleA&term=CuddlDuds&gcid=S11853x026&keyword=cuddl%20duds
Thanks, Jane. You saved me some time.

Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rawhide!
Hah! Hah!
Keep rollin', rollin', rollin',
Though the streams are swollen,
Keep them dogies rollin', rawhide.
Through rain and wind and weather,
Hell bent for leather,
Wishin' my gal was by my side.
All the things I'm missin',
Good vittles, love, and kissin',
Are waiting at the end of my ride.
Move 'em out, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em on.
Move 'em out, head 'em up:
Rawhide.
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, cut 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in:
Rawhide!
Hah! Hah!
Movin', movin', movin',
Though they're disapprovin',
Keep them dogies movin', rawhide.
Don't try to understand 'em,
Just rope an' throw an' brand 'em.
Soon we'll be living high and wide.
My heart's calculatin',
My true love will be waitin':
Waitin' at the end of my ride.
Move 'em out, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em on.
Move 'em out, head 'em up:
Rawhide.
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in,
Ride 'em in, cut 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in:
Rawhide!
(Rollin', rollin', rollin'.)
(Rollin', rollin', rollin'.)
Hah!
(Rollin', rollin', rollin'.)
Hah!
(Rollin', rollin', rollin'.)
Rawhide.
Hah!
I've always loved the Rawhide theme song. The Ten Tenors sometimes do it in concert--would love to hear them do it.

DR Jane - there's a library parody of that song about the process we use to cull our collections. It starts out "Weedin', weedin', weedin'..."
We H/Ks who have too much stuff can sing/hum/whatever that while culling.
-
The amazing thing about watching THE CLOSER from the beginning is watching the squad who initially resents her and has a rooting interest against her slowly comes around person by person in being won over by her expertise. It's heartening to see it happen bit by bit so that by the end of the season, as DR Edi and I were mentioning earlier today, I was in tears seeing the team really come together as a unit bound by respect and trust.
-
When I went back down, I put in the CHICAGO Blu-ray and watched some of the special features on the disc. Most of these weren't on the original disc that I had, so I enjoyed watching them.
-
IDOL/San Antonio auditions:
Same old, same old.
But I was shocked that a really wonderful singer early in the show (came dressed well, had a really nice demeanor) with a better and more distinctive voice than Katherine McPhee, and she BARELY made it to the next round. None of them were overly complimentary, and her voice was pure and true! Later singers they praised to the skies, and I found them barely tolerable.
-
I will say good night now and leave this site to those of you who wish to discuss music and films and theatre rather than underwear!
-
HOUSE was back in its winning formula of a mystery illness that seems to defy diagnosis. Enjoyed the show a lot, but I couldn't place the actor playing the teenager who was ill. I know I've seen him in a major role lately (that long, floppy hair of his was something I remembered), but I couldn't place him at all.
-
DIRT had a lesser episode for me tonight, well, that is until we got the shocking revelations of the final few minutes.
They've dragged the Julia storyline out much longer than necessary. I can't believe the star of a popular sitcom wouldn't have agents, managers, a lawyer, or a publicist who'd have gotten her into rehab long before she got hooked on heroin, especially when their meal ticket was put on hiatus from her series.
-
As with "High Noon's" title song, , Frankie Laine did not sing "The Hanging Tree" in the movie of the same name. It was Marty Robbins .
-
Tomorrow I'll have VERONICA MARS, BOSTON LEGAL, and the two L&Os to watch.
-
I also got THE HEIRESS, THE CLOCK, and DO NOT DISTURB in the mail today, so there's plenty to watch now.
I also noticed that Woody Allen's MATCH POINT (which I haven't seen yet) has finally landed on HBO rotation. I think the HD version comes on Friday, and I have the DVR set to pick it up.
-
Back from Cissy's reading, which was fun. Must now sit on my couch like so much fish, and then I shall post like a sturgeon.
-
Heading downstairs to read a little more about HARRY POTTER and then go to sleep.
Good night!

Yes, some Canadians I know practically brag about how it gets to 40 below. But they also all go to Florida frequently.
and walk around in shirt sleeves when they are shivering at 60

From the imdb regarding Frankie Laine's performance of the Blazing Saddles title song:
"When Mel Brooks advertised in the show business trade papers for a "Frankie Laine-type" voice to sing the title song for Blazing Saddles (1974), he expected a good imitation of the real Laine. Instead, Frankie Laine himself showed at Brooks' office two days later, ready to do the job. He got the job and sang the Oscar-nominated title song again at the Academy Awards the following year."

And here it is:

And it's from Iowa!
Cute Ginny!!

Wow...it's 9:13 (according to my official clock) and I'm still at work! WHY??
Since I don't know, I'm going home. :)
Until later!
-
What a wonderful singer that Frankie Laine!
I wrote to him about ten years ago when his wife, actress Nan Grey died...she was always a favorite of mine. He sent back a very nice response.
-
I also see that Fred Ball, Lucille Ball's younger brother passed away yesterday in Cottonwood, Arizona.
-
Where have the people gone
Looks like there's no one hangin' on
-
Will we never get to page thirteen and beyond.
-
I would love to help you address envelopes and be helpful Bruce!
-
I got my hair better today, so a better picture is on the way!
-
Time to get ready for bed....
Mr. Kimmels recording of Sorry/Grateful is one of my favorite things now.
