THE GREAT ZIEGFELD looks pretty good on DVD. There is some minor scratching and flecks of dirt every once in awhile. The mono sound is adequate.

I still find it amazing that Luise Rainer won the Best Actress Oscar over Carole Lombard in MY MAN GODFREY for this performance.

I remember reading about the financial troubles that Charlotte Rep has been going through about a year ago,
Let up hope the proverbial Phoenix will rise from the ashes.

After the triumphant run of ANGELS IN AMERICA and the subsequent controversy that pumped hundred of thousands of dollars into their accounts from donations after the Arts and Science Council withdrew their financial help, Rep should have been able to do wonders with that bankroll, but sad to say, their desire overreached their grasp. So determined were they to win the regional Tony Award that they sank an ungodly amount of money into a production of THE MIRACLE WORKER with Hillary Swank with the intention of taking it to Broadway. The production was a disaster for the Rep (though it did sellout business, it wasn't enough to prevent a huge debt due to Swank's exorbitant fee and the pullout of the Weisslers from co-producing it). Foolish ventures in avant garde plays when they were at their weakest proved the final nail in the coffin. The last two years they've been trying to do safe, crowd-pleasing works to build up their finances, but those shows never did better than break even (and some didn't do that. How many times can you see BAREFOOT IN THE PARK?).

too bad they didn;t do another controversal play like Corpus Christi that would have pumped $$.

I find it hard though that a regional theater thought it would have been that important to win a Tony Award. I know they would have gotten some $$, but to me that has to be the least important of the tony awards. Shame that striving for it caused their downfall.

It was drizzling a bit ago, but it seems to have stopped.  We need it to be dry for at least the next four hours.

I did get a spot of writing in today and I'm now in a really fun part where someone is about to DIE.

I'm also shaved and showered and looking quite boyishly boyish, what with the few pounds I've lost and my new blonde streaks.

Ann I hope you are feeling better.  The thought of your milk and honey cure doesn’t appeal to me at all. ;D

JMK Zack is so cute. :D
Do Betsy’s parents rent a house or stay with friends?  Bryan said there are condo’s near him we can rent.  I would like to check them out in the hope of an extended visit to Portland-one of these days.

Vixmom did you also send Ann bagels or was last night’s message meant for me?

JRand thank you and GOOD JOB VIBES to you and all DearReaders who need them!!

Bruce did you check the paper for rain stats and records?

I remember one very wet winter when we were in elementary school.  Do you know the street that runs behind Castle Heights Elementary school use to be a gully?  During heavy rains we would all line up along the fence to see if the gully would overflow, forcing school to be cancelled.  I can only remember that happening once.  My mother, in her wisdom, said we might as well stay home that morning because it was bound to happen and it would be a waste of our time to go to school.  My brother and I stayed home and my sister decided to go, only to return a few hours later.

Sandra Dee has died, unless she shares the same publicist as John Raitt and Harvey Schmidt.  (Sorry--un-PC humor is my specialty).

Jane--there was just a nice synchronicity for Betsy's parents' visit.  One of Betsy's radio friends was out of town for the whole month that they are here, so they're staying in her house in the Corbett neighborhood.

Well, it's now pouring again.  I'm waiting for the phone call saying he won't be able to do it.  Although, I'm now pretty convinced this rain is going to continue forever.  I'm telling you, the government and some undercover agency is the cause of this.  Some kind of testing to see if weather warfare can work.  Either that, or LA is suddenly experiencing the worst rainfall in its history, and I just don't buy that for a second.

Miss Dee has indeed passed away at 63, far too young.  I always enjoyed her.

JMK, sorry I thought that was a strange joke you made.  So sad about Sandra Dee.  Her life should have been much better.

JMK, sorry I thought that was a strange joke you made.  So sad about Sandra Dee.  Her life should have been much better.

History of "Strange Joke" (not to be confused with "Strange Music" from Song of Norway):  someone posted here a few days ago that John Raitt had died.  That turned out to be, as he noted with wry understatement, "premature".  Then someone emailed me that Harvey Schmidt had died and I asked BK here if that was right or if Harvey had the same publicist as John Raitt.  Therefore, continuing this string of hilarity (ummm....maybe not :) ), I hedged my bet on Miss Dee.

Re:  Percy Faith.  I want to say that Percy actually scored one of her movies, maybe the Tammy one or one of the comedies with Darrin.  I have to get to a gig but I'll look it up on IMDb and post later if someone doesn't in the meantime.

And I'm sorry she left us at such a young age. 63 is not old at all.

I also liked ROSIE a lot.

JMK, I think I did kind of read that.  My eyes were a bit blurry and my brain a bit fuzzy at the time-not that it is clear yet, just better. ;D

I was often teased I looked like Gidget, which may be the reason it is my favorite Sandra Dee Movie.

So many of her films were fluff, but I loved them.

I am with MBARNUM on his Sandra Dee choices.

THE RESTLESS YEARS - which is sort of a Carrie w/o telekinesis, featuring John Saxon.

IMITATION OF LIFE - just so pretty and oblivious to anyone's problems but her own

SUMMER PLACE - repressed and suddenly Troy Donahue's stepsister

And I will add two:

THE RELUCTANT DEBUTANTE - as the daughter of Rex Harrison and stepdaughter of Kay Kendall who suddenly finds herself part of the London "season."  Sexy John Saxon (a frequent co-star) is the Duke of Positano posing as a drummer in a band.

THAT FUNNY FEELING - costarring with hubby Bobby Darin as a kind of Doris Day, Jr.

Recent reports of her life have been very sad, and I remember Rona Barrett reporting on her devastation at the divorce from Darin.  :'(

Bye, Sandy.

DR JMK is correct.  Percy Faith did the score for TAMMY TELL ME TRUE and his music was also used in TAMMY & THE DOCTOR.

He also contributed to the score of I'D RATHER BE RICH, another Sandra Dee movie.

The news of Sandra's death is a radio item here. I hope she is remembered for far more than a line in "Grease". She was a part of childhood many of us at this site remember as particularly golden - The summer place of our youth. Thanks to DR JRand I got to read "Dream Lovers" a year or so ago. Sandra sang the theme song from "Tammy Tell Me True".  It was released here as a single.

I don't think A&E airs Biography any more. We have The Biography Channel here that airs all of those old A&E Biography programs now.

Or am I wrong? I don't watch A&E any more.

Where is Marc Chapeaux today?  I've seen him reading but I don't think we've had more than a post or two, if that.

And the rain is still coming down.
