THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF
« on: January 23, 2011, 12:30:36 AM »

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had both wheat and chaff, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently separating the wheat from the chaff and are having quite a lot of fun doing so.

It's very cold in Manhattan but that won't deter our trip to Lehman College in the Bronx to see the Wizard of Oz with Antonia!

Well, I have to tell the children's story at church this morning. I should think about thinking about something to say.

I watched THE SOCIAL NETWORK on DVD last night.  I'd seen it in a theater when it was first released.

It's an excellent film, one that I will certainly watch again in the future.

But, Like RAGING BULL and even CITIZEN KANE, it's a film that I admire, rather than "love".

I "love" CASABLANCA.  I "love" THE MALTESE FALCON.  I "love" THE GODFATHER.

The difference is that I "care" about the characters in the movies that I love.  I'm fascinated by the characters in THE SOCIAL NETWORK and the other films, but I don't really like them.

Despite all its great critical awards, I'll be surprised if THE SOCIAL NETWORK wins the Best Picture Oscar.  The Academy doesn't usually give that award to movies they don't "love".

What do you think?

Good morning, all! When I woke, I was having a peculiar dream about Rodgers & Hart's flop castration musical CHEE-CHEE. I was involved with a reading of it at the York Theatre, and it had been decided to record the show. So, I was trying to convnce my friends at the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization to let us record the show with the original orchestrations instead of piano accompaniment.  The sections of the dream I remember now are auditions and talking to someone about possibly recording orchestra tracks in Europe. And "Moon of My Delight," one of my fave Rodgers & Hart songs, kept running through my mind. The original score for that number is missing from the CHEE-CHEE scores at R&H, and I'm convinced that John McGlinn stole it from the archive in the early 1980s. I have a memory of Meg Bussert singing it around 1985 in a Gershwin-Rodgers & Hart concert that McGlinn conducted in Danbury, CT, and he had access to the full score to copy the number. However, the missing score did not turn up in the McGlinnventory, although one of the original Chinese-inspired paper covers that all of the scores are protected by did turn up. Hmmmmm. Coincidence? I think not.

Today, some writing, some tax work, some DVDs.

I liked the Roger Corman disk that MR BK was writing about.  It is strange that both ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS and WAR OF THE SATELLITES seem to be British prints.....but NOT OF THIS EARTH is my favorite of the three.

My wonderful sister-in-law and chef par excellence JoAnn just sent me the first half of the 2011 taxes on that damned property in Ohio: my third is $519, and I guess it was lowered by $180 since the house has been torn down. So we've paid out now around $10,000 in taxes since 2007 and my brothers don't want to pay a realtor's commission! Amazing.

Sunday morning greetings!  Because Fr. Richard was already scheduled to be off today, we did not go to Lima.  It was nice to sleep in a bit and enjoy our newspapers and pancakes and bacon.

I'm guessing it won't be a Randy Vicar story.

Laura Harrington, who did the book for the Houston Grand Opera production of BABES IN TOYLAND, has posted some production photos I've never seen before.  A photo of the set for the Toymaker's workshop was published in a book on scene design around 10 years ago, but here's the opening scene with the shoe house in the background, where the Widow Piper and her fourteen kids live.

And here's the Spider's Forest, with Dana Kreuger flying about as the Moth Queen. I cannot remember the name of our juvenile lead, who got worse as rehearsals went on.

Actually, I have seen chaff on many occasions.  There are a great many wheat farms in Eastern Washington.

Also, I remember many years ago, when the Oscar for "Best Song" went to THE THEME FROM CHAFF.

Good morning, good day, how are you this beautiful day?  I am up.  I was actually up at eight-thirty, but I went back to bed and got up again about twenty minutes ago.  Looks like another pretty day out.
