Seven clues that 'Potter's' Dumbledore was gay
By Deborah Netburn, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
October 23, 2007

1. His pet. "Fawkes, the many-colored phoenix,
is 'flaming.'

2. His name. "While the anagram to 'Tom Marvolo Riddle' is 'I am Lord Voldemort,' as my good friend pointed out, 'Albus Dumbledore' becomes 'Male bods rule, bud!'"
....

"No matter how many 'clues' I can put down that Dumbledore was gay, no matter how many millions of people have read these books again and again, Rowling surprised even the most die-hard fans with the announcement that Dumbledore was gay. And in the end, the fact that we never would have guessed is what makes Dumbledore being gay so real. So many times I have encountered friends who are gay that I never would have predicted. It has shown me that one's sexual orientation is not some obvious 'lifestyle choice,' it's a precious facet of our multi-faceted personalities. And in the end whatever the differences between our personalities are, it is time that our world heeds Dumbledore's advice: 'Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.' Today as I write this, I believe that it's time for our aims to be loyal to what the greatest wizard in the world would have wanted them to be: love."

I saw Young Frankestein last night.

I had a very good time. It was a lot of fun. It's not a "blow me away" show but it's lots of fun and full of laughs. There are some very nice effects (the horses are funny) and Puttin' on the Ritz is a standout. I don't know how much it's changed since George saw it in Seattle but it's now running at a little less than 2 and a half hours. I sat in the next to the last row of the balcony in the old Apollo and Lyric Theatres, then called the Ford Center for the Performing Arts and now called The Hilton Theatre. I had no problem seeing with and without my binoculars.

Roger Bart is out for an undetermined amount of time due to a back problem but I was very happy with Matthew LaBanca (making his Broadway debut). I would like to see the show with Roger Bart but if I don't I won't be disappointed. He was quite good and I think they have a good cover if Bart is out for a while.

The show is basic Brooks, full of rat-a-tat jokes, some funny and some falling flat (of course Thomas Meehan had a hand in that also, being the book writer). Lots of the jokes come straight from the movie. Happily, we did not have the stupid and annoying behavior of the film fanatics who come to a show and scream when a favorite scene is about to take place (can you tell how much I dislike that infantile conduct ;)).

The weakest part of the show (IMHO) is the score. It's not bad by any means, but it's not particularly memorable. There are some very funny numbers (besides POTR) but I don't see them surviving outside the show.

My other "complaint" about the show is Megan Mullaly. She's fine in the the show and I know the role in the movie is small but she doesn't do a lot AND (my real complaint) for me, she was channeling Karen Walker (her character from Will and Grace) a lot. The role seems to be written that way to take advantage of the audience familiarity with her but it doesn't always work for me.

All in all, I had a good time. I left the theatre with a smile and what more can you ask for for $51.50 nowadays.

I wanted to buy a souvenir for my nephew but they were all out of the Young Frankenstein baseball cap, all they had left were the Abby Normal hats. I will go back and see if I can find a Young Frankenstein hat before Christmas. What I would really like to get is the new book by Thomas Schumacher. I saw it advertised in the Playbill. It's called "How Does the Show Go On: An Introduction to the Theater". It's geared toward kids and I think builds on the success of "High School Musical". My nephew has discovered the joys of musical theatre (he's 12) and I think he will enjoy this book. It's not due out until December 18th. I suppose I could get it that day and mail it out so it arrives before Christmas. We shall see. I'm getting my niece (his sister) something from Little Mermaid, which I see on November 14th.

And that, dear friends, with a slight detour, is my brief report on Young Frankenstein. I don't know that it will be a blockbuster but it should do well and I hope it does do well.

And now, back to the Willard L. Eccles Charitable Foundation.

Good morning, all!  I am back to Encores! this morning, but I've been asked to not show up until 11 am, and I've got work to do here.  This is also my last day on the project before Saturday's read down, and I want it to go as well as possible for the conductor and the orchestra as well as the editrix, who will have to face the problems she's generated.

DR Jose, thanks for the offer but I have to go it alone: this is a project that can hardly afford my exorbitant demands.

So, I have a couple of hours to work on the David Burnham orchestra parts and I can use it.

BK, I emailed you the info you requested.

Good morning!

The deluge of rain that we were hoping for hasn't come. It drizled just a bit eysterday, and so far today, it's humid but not raining, and the overcast from this morning seems to be clearing a bit. So who know what will eventually happen. It should start to get cooler starting tomorrow, however. I had to sleep with both the attic fan and the ceiling fan last night because the house felt a bit clammy.

I haven't yet bought the Blu-ray versions of 2001 or THE SHINING (the two Kubricks I plan on getting). I thought I'd wait for a sale since I like both movies but don't often revisit them (not as much as I revisit certain musicals or the Harry Potter or James Bond films).

Just to have THE SHINING in an anamorphic widescreen (1080p) version rather than an open matte nonenhanced standard version should be quite wonderful.

I'll be looking to see some informed reviews of what the discs look like, say from JMK's review site rather than the fanboy stuff on imdb.

And, yes, it is raining here in NYC.  However, it's been a nice gentle rain, drizzle all morning so far at least in my neck of the woods.  It's supposed to get a little heavier as the day goes on, which is OK.  However, we're not supposed to dry out until the weekend, so...  Too bad we can't send some of this precipitation to Southern California.

I hate that with COLD CASE, but I've decided this year that if the show doesn't start on time, I'm just going to miss it. I have too many other thigns to watch to try to program the DVR to catch everything.

Of course, with TAR, I know you don't want to miss an episode because of eliminations. Glad I don't watch it any more so I don't have that worry.

My question for ASK BK day....

Have you seen MAD MEN yet?

You haven't lived until you have seen the prettiest mom in the neighborhood out in the backyard in her peignoir, Salem hanging from her mouth, making short work of the neighbor's pigeons with a shotgun.

I haven't seen it.  Do I get the channel it's on?

DR Jennifer

SPOILER

In "Heroes" on Monday evening, Kristen Bell's character "murdered" Ricky, brother of Caitlin, in his own pub just to extract information from him.

I don't quite know how you interpreted this act on her behalf, but if a red-hot poker were pointed at me, I'd have to say her character is e-v-i-l!

I believe we have had some informed opinion on the transfers in the new Kubrick box set - by me, who is a hell of a lot more informed than most of the people who write for these websites - not you, MattH, but the kids who have no idea what these films looked like when they were originally shown.  Instead, we get comments like "black levels are pitch."  The blather about The Searchers' transfer told the tale a lot more eloquently than I could - with everyone tripping over themselves to say how brilliant it was because it was SHARP.  Sharp doesn't mean a transfer is great, it means it's sharp.  But for almost every "reviewer" at these sites, that's all it took to get a rave, and they said the color was magnificent.  Only people who actually knew what The Searchers' color is supposed to look like stood up (me included) and loudly proclaimed the transfer a four-star disaster - the color being a sad joke and looking nothing like the IB Tech prints of that film.  Same with The Nun's Story, same with Breakfast At Tiffany's and the same with others.  If those are informed opinions, I'll eat a chocolate donut.

Oh, good - I'm now eating a chocolate donut.

MAD MEN:

Joan: (top secretary to Peggy, new secretary)  And here is your typewriter.  I know it looks very complicated, but it's actually easy to use.

Peggy: (looking) Oh, dear.

FWIW, few people who enjoy "The Searchers" on DVD -- and it looks absolutely vibrant and colorful to them because it IS -- have any "memory" of what it "might have" looked like in Technicolor.

And, of course, no one whose memory of it says otherwise will ever be able to prove how much more brilliant it was because, to date, no Technicolor print seems to exist.

Perhaps if those who have the perfect memories of colors more vibrant, more thrilling, more revelatory than those on the current DVD were to actually do a proper restoration, then maybe that would show "us" how terribly stupid "we" are.  After all, "we" can only discuss what we see with our own eyes.

We cannot possibly view the DVD through the eyes of 50-plus-year-old memories.

The color that IS there, however, is dazzling compared to the washed-out crap we get today.

I, for one, apologize to all and sundry here on this board for having any positive opinion upon which you have already pronounced yourself the one and only expert whose opinion is the only one that matters

Sorry, Ron, you can get as defensive as you like, but I don't look at these things through fifty year old memory - I know what I'm talking about, having owned both 16mm and 35mm IB Tech prints.  If you are happy with vibrant greenish skies, great.  I am not.  If you are happy with the color yellow being predominant, great.  I am not.  Winton Hoch was one of the greatest color cameramen ever and this transfer is a travesty of his work.  Those skies should be bluer than blue - they should be ACHINGLY blue.  Look at the original DVD transfer.  No, it's not as SHARP and DETAILED as the new transfer, but the COLOR is what it should be.  Why?  Because the people who DID that transfer back in the laserdisc days USED an IB Tech studio print (yes, Ron, Warners has an IB Tech perfectly-colored studio print and guess what - THEY DIDN'T USE IT when they were doing the new transfer - they forgot - they didn't care - and that comes right from Mr. Robert Harris' mouth), and they got the color as close as possible back in those days.  Had those people done this new transfer we'd ALL be raving.

It's like Warners' new transfer of Singin' In The Rain - people rave.  It's all brown and looks nothing like IB Tech prints of that film (of which I've owned several) - they rave because it's SHARP.  And I'm telling you, SHARP is wonderful, but color is more important.

Oh, I see you've edited your post and got even more defensive.  No one's laughing at you or anyone else.  Why is it that when people try to inform they are derided as being mean and uppity?  My opinion isn't the be-all and end-all, for God's sake.  But it IS informed, and I'm not the ONLY one who has it.  Mr. Harris agreed with me (eventually back-pedaling when Warners asked him to, but the posts where he agreed with me stand), scholars of the film agreed with me, and many people who were at the screening of the D-5 digital master at the Academy agreed with me.

You don't, and that's fine - no need to get snippy about it.

See, here's the thing.  I don't get greenish or yellowish anything.

What I see on my TV and what others say they see on theirs -- and given your negative comments about films that, on my TV,  look spectacular with true colors popping off the screen -- I have to say I'm suspicious of whoever calibrated your equipment.

I see you've edited your post again.  My TV is just fine and transfers that have correct color look amazing on my TV (a 65" Mitsubishi hi-def tv).   Re The Searchers, many people who were raving about the new transfer posted screen caps and when compared to screencaps of the older transfer the color on the older transfer blew them away - not the sharpness, not the detail, just the color. And, on one forum, someone actually put a few frames from the new transfer into a sophisticated computer program and added blue to the screencaps and took out some of the yellow - and guess what - it was perfect.

Well, for $52.86 I can get eight books over at Jessica's Biscuit, all but one of them in hardback.  (That's the next batch on my wish-list - get ready, der B, it's almost ordering time again!)

Given how much a trip to NYC can set us back, it doesn't sound like Young Frankenstein is going to get us to drive up.  Seeing two new musicals and a large number of friends, like we did on our last trip - that was priceless.

I don't think you're an idiot.  I think you are not necessarily aware of what these transfers should look like, color-wise.  It's no crime.  Oh, What A Lovely War is a very nice transfer with very faded colors.

You don't get greenish or yellowish anything because you have nothing to compare it to.  If I had never seen The Searchers, if I didn't know what that film should look like, had I never seen it projected in IB Tech, I'd be raving too, I have no doubt.  I rave about the sharpness - gorgeous sharpness.  Color?  As the Duke would say, "Not hardly."

The situation in California is one reason I'm glad I'm no longer living there.  Earthquakes never really bothered me, but brushfires scared the bejezus out of me.

When I was growing up, we could watch the brushfires across the San Fernando Valley from my parent's room (which had the best uninterrupted views), particularly at night.  Orange on black is so not my favorite color combination - no wonder Halloween doesn't thrill me much.

And it's a double whammy, because the odds are that there will be little in the way of rain between now and the torrential rains that come in the spring.  That'll mean mudslides, which can destroy whatever the fires missed.

I'd love to see what you saw in the orignal showing of "Oh! I'm quibbling and not arguing, though.

Well I tried to call the vet this morning about Callie.  First I was put on hold for about 4-5 minutes. I hung up and called back and when she asked me to hold, I said I had been for about 5 minutes, She said "Well it will be a minute more" and put me on hold. After 2-3 minutes more, I hung up again and called back.  It was 7 minutes from when I really started paying attention.

This ordinarily could be excused, but then after I identified myself and she clearly didn't know a thing about Callie (who has been inpatient for a total of almost 5 days from mid September until now) I asked to speak with anyone familiar with her case. She said they were ALL in surgery.  So there wasn't a receptionist, a tech, not one employee who wasn't in surgery????   All I wanted to do was explain the symptoms and see if she needed to go in.  It didn't seem to me that explaining this to someone who knew nothing of her history made much sense, especially since I had to get to federal court.

Anyway, it was the last straw.  I stopped on the way to work and picked up her file - the receptionist was nice enough to copy Boo's file too.  Then I asked around and made an appointment with a vet that was highly recommended by 2 different people I trust.

So then I called and asked for Callie's x-rays, which they provided.  I just took them and left. Then I called back and said I wanted the vet to call me so I can explain to him why I'm getting a different vet.   There was this really long pause and then she said "I'll give him the message"  Bet she doesn't do it.

Reports are surfacing from some people who saw a screening of Sweeney Todd.  Though I'm suspicious of these reports, they are encouraging.  Of course, we had similar encouraging screening reports for Dreamgirls (which I found wanting), Rent, The Producers, etc.  But, I've felt from the beginning that Burton is at least a director who understands film and he's interesting visually.  Though I haven't really liked any of his films from the last decade, I think Sweeney has a shot.

I am not one who normally breaks into tears, but it's happened 2 of the last 3 times I've dealt with these people. AND the first of the three times, I was told that I could drop Callie off but no one could see her until late afternoon. I did it and when the vet called he said she had gotten an enema at 10:00 AM!  So, the receptionist made me think Callie was suffering all day for no good reason.

Actually, "muted" is an apt description - it's just on the brown side, especially noticable because the whites aren't as white as they should be.  It wasn't that way originally.  I agree that the transfer is pristine in every other way.

This, from The Secret Life of Lobsters, by Trevor Corson.  Just because I like to share.

(Talking about lobster fishing.  A "notcher" is a female lobster that has had a notch cut into her tail, to identify her to future fishermen as one that has or can bear eggs, protected from fishing by law.)

Quote
Once, the monotony of Mark Fernald's day was broken when he hauled up a big notcher that was dressed in a Barbie-doll outift, complete with high-heeled sandals.  Mark had to lift her skirt to see her V-notch.  Another lobsterman caught her again about a week later - she had walked three miles in heels.

DR Jane - I hope you and your wrist slept well last night.

thank you.  it was a semi rough night.  i did manage to meet up with my hiking group this morning & we had a lovely long walk around the lake...the almost lake-it is exceptionally low at the moment.

while i have definitely had a set back it is somewhat better now than it was this morning.

Jrand, mbarnum, & cilla, thank you as well.

I cannot argue about what THE SEARCHERS looked like originally. I never saw it on a screen. I can tell you that there are NO green skies in the Blu-ray version of the movie that I have, and it remains, almost a year after I got involved in high def movies on disc, among the two or three best transfers I have in my collection.

BK, I did not mean to imply that I didn't find your thoughts on films informed. The point I was making was that I'm not going to buy the disc you were commenting on - the standard definition version. I'm eager to read some informed comments on the Blu-ray versions of THE SHINING and 2001. I read Peter Bracke's review this morning on THE SHINING, and he was overall pleased with the video quality and not so pleased with the audio.

The bonus features were beyond pathetic: a 1 1/2 minute plea from two of the actresses on the show for support of Much Love Animal Rescue, and biographical text pages (they still do these?) on all the major actresses on the show.

They also included the premiere episodes of THE TUDORS and CALIFORNICATION but nothing about the behind-the-scenes making of the episodes of the season.

I spent the last 40 minutes of the afternoon watching GIRL CRAZY. Since I've seen it so much, I turned on John Fricke's excellent audio commentary while I watched. The film looks a bit grainier than the BABES films in the set (haven't watched STRIKE UP THE BAND yet), and I saw some scratches and specks, but overall, it looked fine.

I am so glad to have these and not have to rely on the VHS versions any more.

October's walk of the month

This October day couldn't have been more glorious if it had been auditioning for Autumn Morning of the Year. Up in the beech woods that overhang the village the trees were on the turn, a fretwork of old gold against the blue sky. Spiders' webs sagged between sprigs of old man's beard, heavy with diamonds of sunlit dew.

Yews stood in the shade of beech and oak, with thick veins of ivy twisted round their limbs. "I love the smell of the woods at this time of year," Jane murmured, "that rich damp savour they've got after a bit of rain in the night.

To continue...I guess what I really need with this second opinion is confirmation that there really is a tumor.  The vet on Saturday only had Ebonie in the back for 10-15 minutes (cleaning the claw) and she didn't tell me what it was that made her suspect that there was a tumor, as opposed to it just being an infection or abscess. :-\

Ebonie has been home now for four days and her affected paw doesn't seem to feel any different than the other ones.  She doesn't have any problem with me holding it and, from the outside of her body and with my completely untrained eyes, it looks normal.

george, i think your vet should have explained herself, and done a biopsy.  if it is a tumor, and it isn't growing, and it is benign, then maybe it doesn't need to be removed.  on the other hand, if it is a cancerous tumor, urgency may be needed.  i think overall she seemed to casual about it all, and slightly uninterested.

Six hours today and we have 8 numbers to be read through on Saturday. We're printing out an original set of parts as she gave them to us riddled with errors and  some major editorial problems.  If the editrix gets uppity, I'm going to have the orchestra read the parts.  I look forward to her face when she hears the trumpets playing the melody in a different key from everybody else.

Poor Josh, who's stuck with correcting the errors, had a meltdown at 5 pm, and I understand the stress he's running under.

I don't miss working in the theatre area on matinee days at all: a packed bus, an obnoxious kid who proved once again that kids in comas cause no problems and whose nanny should have put her in check.  I thought if she didn't stop yelling to her baby brother "hello, hello, hello . . ." over and over for at least 1o minutes straight I would pay the driver good money to run over her.

And now I'm home.

I see that DR tomovoz holds a major dislike for Wayne, while I find him a fascinating "movie star."  A world without the films Wayne made with Howard Hawks would seem a very sad world to me.  St. Patrick's Day without THE QUIET MAN would be most unseemly.

Yes, DRTCB....I thought I was as up to date as I could possibly get.  Imagine getting a different FONT just by changing your daisy wheel?  And you could use correction tape right ON the page.  No more messy white out.

Wonders why DRJANE says "u" - but I won't ask.

Miss Blue is back from the doggie beauty parlor, wearing her lovely newly brushed coat and a witch and goblin scarf.

TRUE GRIT
THE SEARCHERS
THE CONQUEROR
STAGECOACH
RIO BRAVO

Well, I took Callie to the new vet today.  The "senior" vet in the office was out so I went to a young woman who seemed to be right out of school.  I gave her the xrays and the notes from the other vet and she seemed a bit overwhelmed by it, but went in the back for awhile and came back with some really practical solutions.

She also noticed that Callie had a temp and thinks she has an infection of some sort right now, so we're treating her with antibiotics.  She gave her some fluids, told me she would show me how to do it and could give me a set up for them so I could give them to her if there was an emergency.  She told me about 2 prescription foods that are low residue and gave me samples of both to try.  She did an exam and Callie isn't going because she isn't eating...no problem there.

So, I'm not sure exactly what's wrong right now, but I gave her the antibiotic tonight and we'll see how it goes. She isn't well, but....

The young vet is going to consult with the other vet tomorrow and will get back to me.   It's like going from the high tech modern vet hospital to the mom and pop vet clinic.  So far I like it. Much more teaching me how to manage the situation .

The most telling thing was Callie purred the entire time we were there.

I"m cautiously optimistic about this vet. I am hoping that she spends more time on each case if she is fairly new at this.  The other vet at that office is the one who was so highly recommended.  I'm willing to give her a chance. We'll see what happens.   She did tell me to add a little more lactalose and skip the pill that Callie chokes on. We'll see how that works out.

Out of curiousity, what do DRs think of John Wayne's film career?

I see that DR tomovoz holds a major dislike for Wayne, while I find him a fascinating "movie star."  A world without the films Wayne made with Howard Hawks would seem a very sad world to me.  St. Patrick's Day without THE QUIET MAN would be most unseemly.

"The Quiet Man" is most tolerable.  My favorite.

But.....WAIT FOR IT!.....I find I have to once again AGREE with DR Tomovoz.

I don't know whether it's because I'm getting older or Tom is wearing me down or what.

Good Evening!

When I headed out earlier, I really wasn't sure where I wanted to go, nor what I wanted to do.  Well, I decided to take the D Train to 7th Avenue, and then walked over to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).  I remembered a small blurb about a new Seurat exhibit starting there this week; in fact, it started today.  For MoMA members at least.  So, I went ahead and signed up, got my new membership card, and proceeded up to the sixth floor to view:

Georges Seurat: The Drawings (http://moma.org/exhibitions/exhibitions.php?id=3960&ref=calendar)

What a wonderful exhibit of some lesser-known pieces of a not-so-lesser-known artist.  There were a few drawings that literally had me in awe of not only the beauty of them, but also of the technique of them.  The use of "negative space", as well taking advantage of the texture of the Michallet paper, Seurat's preferred "canvas" for this drawings.  Never before have I become aware of how drawings and paintings are made of up not only the pencil, crayon, paint, but also of the existing canvas.

The final room of the exhibition concentrates on some of the studies for his larger paintings.  Of course, some studies for "La Grande Jatte" are included.

I also enjoyed the various placards placed throughout the exhibit that described life in Paris during Seurat's lifetime, and how the urbanization of Paris started the "fleeing to the suburbs".  -Who knew that the train could stand for so much?

I will definitely head back for a second and possibly third viewing, and I may even splurge on the accompanying book - especially since Members get a discount. :)

...And since I had not yet had lunch, I proceeded down to Terrace 5 (http://www.themodernnyc.com/t5/t5.html) for a late(!) lunch/early dinner.

Since it was not too chilly, I opted for a table outside overlooking the sculpture garden.  However, it will be nice to go back there in warmer, sunny weather.  In any case, I opted for the Fall Tasting menu: Beet Salad, and Slow-Roasted Salmon.  Oh, and Yes, dessert was also included: I chose their Pecan Tarte with Vanilla Ice Cream from among the many dessert choices.  Oh, and Dark Chocolate Hot Chocolate with Homemade Marshmallow.  Well, it turned out to come with three homemade marshmallows which were presented on a small swewer.  And there were three different types: Vanilla Bean, Pistachio and Coconut.  -I think they were my favorite part of the meal.

I should start getting dinner on the table.

Battered cod, baked french fried potatoes, and zucchini fritters.

(Yes, it is fish!)

Baked!?!?!?!?  Hmm, it seems to me that you could do the initial fry before you fry the cod and zucchini fritters, and then give them a second fry (a.k.a. The Belgian Treatment).  -Hmm...And then if you can whip up some tzatziki... YUM!

i took my splint off for a heavenly shower.  i should have expected all the bruising, don’t know why I didn’t. ;D  I have been concerned the inside of my wrist, on the inside just the wrist-that bone that goes up to the thumb, hasn’t looked good.  I called the doctor, who was out, & thy said to take the splint off and ice it.  I have been icing it but the splints were in the way.  Now I can really get to it, and feel the cold.  I think it is a little better.

It is odd the side with the little crack is much worse than the opposite side with the break.  Not more painful, just looks worse.  I don’t want my hand to look like this forever, and i don't want a more confining splint or cast ???

sorry to complain but i'm sitting here with the cold ice and nothing else to do ;D

Ok, the vets have always just referred to them as subcutaneous fluids. I wasn't familiar with the lactated ringers term

Somehow LACTATED RINGERS just sounds like the sort of phrase you'd find here at HHW.

BK, surely you can do something with that.  ;)

Hmm.. I guess you could put tzatziki - greek yogurt, shredded cucumbers and garlic(!) on falafel... Sound yummy to me.  However, falafel is usually served with tahini - sesame seed paste.  Although, a garlic cream is also a common falafel condiment.

Cilla, I'm a big believer in at-home care. Many years ago one of my cats had distemper. I took her to the vet, who, of course, said it was useless and wanted to put her to sleep immediately. I refused and we got into quite an arguement. I took her home, gave her water and liquid baby vitamins with an eyedropper every half-hour, kept her warm, and cuddled her. She got through it just fine. About a month or two later, a friend who worked for the vet and knew of our words, stopped by my house and asked what happened to the cat. "That's her," I said, referring to the kitty who was happily running all around. She couldn't believe it.

There's a lot to be said, I think, for an animal being at home with loved ones and getting much care and attention, versus an institutional environment.

And then there's that semi-mysterious "White Sauce" that the Halal Food Carts here in NYC top their offering with.  It seems to be a combo of yogurt, sour cream, mayonnaise, dill, garlic, etc.  Although each cart chef seems to have his own secret formula.

Jane, I think there are cases where the animal CAN get well, but it takes more care than can be given in the typical animal hospital, where the staff is limited and has many animals to care for.

Hmmmm....I know that Susan's singing voice belonged to Jane Froman, but were these numbers specifically recorded for the film, or were they previous recordings?  And if so were they somehow re-recorded with new orchestrations?

I remember the title song being beautifully sung and orchestrated....

And of course, DR JEANNE - what I remember most from I'LL CRY TOMORROW is "When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along" - sang it for weeks after seeing the movie.  It was the first time I ever heard that song.

MattH - when I say greenish/yellowish skies, I'm not sure if it's something you'd notice unless you had the original DVD to compare it to.  But, even more of a question would be - given the amount of flack there was when the SD version came out (with Bob Harris taking my side, and Ned Price admitting they hadn't looked at their tech reference print or ANY reference print and admitting there was a yellowish cast to the whole film), well, I do wonder if they quietly redid and fixed the transfer for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?  Because I've read elsewhere that it looks great on hi-def, although I could swear I remember reading that the HD version, at least, was the same.  I think you said you had the Blu-Ray, right?  Can you do screen caps?  Because if they corrected it for Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) that would almost get me to get into hi-def.

Okay, let's see if we can make some illustrative screencaps work.  First, the main title from the original DVD - forget the SHARPNESS and DETAIL, which is truly lacking - look at the color of the bricks - that is the color they've always been in every single IB Tech print I've ever seen, from back in 1956 through the ones I've owned and seen through the years.

Skip worked with David Campbell in 1998, when there was a reading directed by Joe Mantello of a (now defunct, the underlying rights long since expired) musical of Don Juan Demarco, in which David played the title role and John Cullum played the doctor. Skip wrote the music, Craig Lucas wrote the book, and Ellen Fitzhugh wrote the lyrics.

I didn't even notice anyone sitting to the side of us, but that was certainly a nice suprise. I wonder if it's someone who was influenced by the Dali Lama's visit this week?

The kittens we had that died of distemper came to us with the disease. They were always babies too tiny to have had their shots yet. We didn't know it when we got them, but it became apparent soon after. :(

Huh? We're talking fluid under the skin with a needle and an i v bag

Our ancient cat needed that once a week for several years. We never could get up the nerve to do it ourselves, but plenty of my friends do it for their cats.

And another shot from the new transfer, which is so orange and yellow that it's like a cartoon.  It should not look like that.  It looks like Ward Bond has jaundice.

Today the producer I'm working with on the gold museum documentary and I met with a potential composer. I've never used him before, but he has a nice demo and is an old Marietta boy. When I worked at the country club 30 years ago, his family was one of the few that treated me like a person, not like "the help" or that I was "beneath" them.

It was so rare to be treated as an equal that I remember everyone who did! And I remember this guy as a 12 year old skinny kid.

Now he's a 6' 4" skinny adult with grey hair and several kids!

I have a question for those of you who watch the Food Network.

There is a show here that just started airing on the Canadian Food Network. The Next Iron Chef.  I was wondering (without giving any spoilers) if anyone knew how long ago this show originally aired.  I've seen one episode and i really like it.

Thanks.
Three episodes of six have aired here in the States.

The composer came from a family of dentists and had a very lucrative dental practice but decided to give it up, move to a smaller house (Alton Brown bought his gorgeous, immense old house) and just compose music.

He's eager to do some film scoring (so far he's done a lot of gaming music). He sent me his demo package, which has a huge book on midi scoring that he wrote. He said that I could use it for a doorstop if I like. I liked his attitude, so I hope he'll agree to our measley budget!

I began my evening tonight by watching the first 100 minutes of WYATT EARP. I've always been a fan of the film, and I'm enjoying the new high definition transfer quite a lot. When I finish, I'll put in the SD to do some A/B comparisons. While the Blu-ray looks very nice, I wouldn't say it's as dimensional as newer transfers that I've seen lately, but it is better than others.

The supplements are exactly the same as those on the SD version. In fact, they've just ported them over from the SD. None of the supplements are in HD at all.

The sound isn't an upgrade either. Standard Dolby Digital 5.1 (though the bitrate for it may be high than on the SD disc. I'll have to check that later.)

*And, yes, I've had my meal "comped" before by someone else.  I've also treated some friends at another table before too.  And I remember one time where the people I was treating ended up treating me too.  :)

Next, I watched ABC's entire line-up of the evening starting with PUSHING DAISIES. This will be my last episode of the show. For what it is (a fantasy with mystery elements), it's well done, but I'm just not getting with the program. So, that will free up an hour for me.

I will hate missing Raul Esparza when his character returns to the show, but I'm going to let this one go.

Oh, FJL I have a story for Skip...

I asked Vixter the other day what she wanted for dinner... she said she was really craving fried chicken but woul;d settle for pork chops... I replied I would be happy to make her some fried chicken and she said. "Not to be mean Mom, but really. when it comes to making fried chicken, you're no Skip Kennon"

PRIVATE PRACTICE again had interesting cases (I guessed about the black girls early on) but absurd stuff with Addison this week. Falling out of bed three mornings in a row having sex dreams? Someone gets paid to write this?

I have really become very fond of Paul Adelstein on the show, so I'm sticking around for him and the interesting patients.

I didn't want Boo to eat it, but Callie is hiding out tonight and Boo found where I set it and she ate it. I didn't have much in the dish, so I'm sure it won't hurt her. Heck with her stomach issues, maybe it will help.

Callie hasn't been eating at all. I'm guessing that the medicine is bothering her stomach. Since she hasn't eaten, there's really no reason for her softener tonight. So I'm going to give her the night off. It's the only bed time med. So I'm going to cut her some slack. Hopefully here appetite will return tomorrow.

Oh she's actually looking more chipper tonight.  She went up to the cat's bedroom (It has a litter box and a place to put food) It's where I usually put them when they are recovering and/or need to be separated from each other. It's supposed to be a guest room, but it's not. Anyway, she is acting like she's feeling better but doesn't want to risk me giving her any more medication.  I stop by and pet her and talk to her.  I'll take her a dish of food tonight.

Boo is being a really good girl tonight. After weeks of claws on the sofa, I figure it must be the lower stress level in the house and that Callie may be getting better. Between Callie purring at the vet and Boo being good, I'm guessing I did things right today

td - Do you know David Campbell?  If so, tell him Skip Kennon says hello.

David Campbell and I share the same birthday, of course NOT the same birth year.
I only met David once, but thanks to another friend Down Under I've kept in touch with him, and that was when he performed at Rainbow & Stars; we had a very, very long chat, which was only interrupted by the very wacky MaryAnn Lapinto.
DR tomovoz is not the Aussie in my circle of friends, but if he were, I'd still be a very happy man for knowing him.
