I finished watching RKO 281 - quite bad.  Then I watched the first thirty minutes of The Magnificent Ambersons.  If there's a better opening thirty minutes of any film I haven't seen it.

Good Evening!

...And FOLLIES was the perfect way to end a truly wonderful day off in New York City. I can't wait to get back here on October 3rd and be a New Yorker again for a few weeks.

Since I have to be on a train back to DC in seven hours, all I will say right now about FOLLIES is that is a totally different show from what I saw at the Kennedy Center. Still not a "perfect" production of an imperfect version of the script, but, frankly, I loved it.

Hello -  As I think DR elmore mentioned about New York--it's uncomfortably humid here even though it's not hot.

Ditto.

DR Cillaliz - Do you prefer to be called a "flutist" or "flautist"?

;)

Flutist.  Flautist never sounded like a good thing to be to me

Neither does horn blower, but I wear the name with pride.

:o ;D ;)  :-X ;) :)

Thanks for the travel vibes, Elmore. I made it to Albany and then Catskill safely and on schedule with a stop at an excellent Greek restaurant for dinner. Not the usual gyro, pressed meat, but some fine vegetables and cheeses. The vegetarian options looked so good, I skipped on the meat.

Dessert was galaktabouriko, my favorite, which had a touch of orange blossom water in the egg custard and not too much honey on the phyllo dough. So the end result was light and exotic (well, OK, my one bite was).

DR JohnG - Galaktabouriko is my favorite Greek dessert! My favorite Greek place in Richmond used to make an incredible version. One time, I soooooo wanted a slice, but it had just come out of the oven yet. After some "begging", Stella cut, well scooped me out a slice. It was the most amazing custard/pudding/dessert soup I've ever had.

And...

I got off the bus, walked two blocks... And some punk teenager stopped me... "You got any money? Empty your pockets."

I did get a bit worried at first, but then I assessed the situation... We were two blocks from a subway stop... There were some other people walking around... Because his pants for soooooo loose in that "gangsta" manner, there was no way he could have been gripping and hiding a gun in his waist band... He also just kept talking and talking and talking... Eventually, after I kept repeatedly telling him, "No, I'm not going to empty my pockets," he cracked a smile and said, "I'm just joking. (Duh!) My name is XXXXX XXXXX. I'm going to be famous some day."

-"I'm sure your are."

Then I hailed a cab uptown.

He'll be a famous headline: IDIOT TEEN THREATENS WRONG PERSON AND DIES

Alas, that's exactly what I was thinking.

Jose, it wouldn't work in two parts - and it's only a minute or so longer than the short version, running 7:30 instead of the 6:30 the others run.  I'm still thinking about it and will actually have the option of using either.  Also, if we use the short version, I'll put the long version of the two songs on our website.

Gotcha.

I picked up a very unexpected package - the first 100 Nudie Musical Blu and Rays, which look great all shrink wrapped and packaged.  I'll be sending a number of these on to Chicago early next week, along with my memoir.

bk - If you happen to need any restaurant recommendations for Chicago.... ;)

I'm tipsy from the Guinness, but I am back from a quite wonderful evening with the RTE Concert Orchestra and its wonderful conductor David Brophy. The event at Alice Tully Hall consisted of two parts: the first half being two short silent fllm made by a contemporary Irish fiim maker, both a combination of sci fi, fantasy, and employing film clips of Dubl9n from 75 years ago or longer. One of the shorts THE UNUSUAL INVENTIONS OF HENRY CAVENDISH was accompanied by a solopiano. The second THE LACTATING AUTOMATON was rather a sad piece about a child raised by a robot., and it was accompanied by the concert orchestra, The film composer was there, and the score, abot 15 minutes long, was absolutely delightful.

The second half of the event was introduced by Gabriel Byrne; it was a restored print of a 1933 silent film THE GUESTS OF THE NATION, based on a Frank O'Connor story that has also inspired THE CRYING GAME and Brendan Behan's wonderful tragicomedy THE HOSTAGE. The film, about 50 minutes in length, features actors Barry Fitzgerald and Cyril Cusack, along with a lot of actors from the Abbey Theatre  and is about the IRA capturing two British soldiers they plan to assassinate if the British army hangs two IRA prisoners. It's a film about the friednship developing between the two Brits and their captors and the tragedy once the hanging occurs. I was in tears at the end. The new film score is beautiful and the orchestration so fine that the 22 players in the orchestra sounded twice the size. The music featured a lot of Gaelic melodie and hadexcellent transparencies with beautiful harp, flute and English horn solos. I got to tak to both composers and tell them how much I admired their work.

After David and I got through the reception - and I noticed a very handsome man there with a mighty fit physique that I thought might be a future interview for our DR MBarnum - David and I went to PJ Clark's where the orchestra was partaying. I got to see three players from the EILEEN orchestra - harp, percussion, and viola, so that was a lot of fun, I caught up with Brophy on his day in Manhattan, and then the handsome man from the reception showed up and asked me if i were Irish and what I had to do with the event!

He is a retired boxer named John Duddy, who's going into acting, and we talked about thirty minutes. He is by no means a dumb jock, but he could certainly play one, and I think he's a genuinely good person.  Hopefully, he'll send me an email or give me a call. If I were an agent or manager, I'd sign him up. I think he will have a good career.

Mikey, what's your opinion?

How is the new job, td?

It's very invigorating, mentally.  I'm learning new names for old products, new recipes and new registers on a daily basis.  I've got the customer service down pretty well. . .;)

At this point, after a full week's worth of work, I'm finally beginning to relax and enjoy the ride.

DR td - Just continue to enjoy the ride. :)

Goodnight.

I did, DR Jose! Where were your tickets?

I'm really bummed that the idiot reviewers kept knocking Warren Carlyle for not being Michael Bennett and praising that idiot Schaeffer for a lot of the work Warren did.

Row G on the aisle. Bryn Terfel was in Row H right behind me. Bette Midler was in Row F (and the texting bitch was in Row E). Katherine Heigl and TR Knight were down the row from Miss Midler. Joseph Stein's daughter was also in attendance tonight. -There were lots of industry folks there, in general.
