Today at 10:30 a.m., I have to usher for a local dance company's recitals.  They have four performances and I have to be there for the earliest one. :P That's too darned early!  Anyway, I'll be there with bells on.  After that, I'll hurry home so that I can be set for the Tony Awards®!

On the way up to Seattle yesterday, we listened to 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Astrud Gilberto (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0007WW35Q/sr=8-2/qid=1150011193/ref=pd_bbs_2/102-4779504-7364131?%5Fencoding=UTF8).  I have never really heard any of her songs, other than "The Girl from Ipanema."

Oh!  I forgot that when I was in Seattle yesterday, after the ballet but before we went to eat at Dick's Drive-In, we stopped at Tower Records.  Now, last month when I went to see PennyO in the reading in Seattle, I went to Tower Records afterwards and bought the original Broadway cast recording of Kean with Alfred Drake.  When I tried to play it at work, I was shocked and horrified to find that the disc had some scratches on it...they really just looked like a bunch of dots...that made the CD unplayable.  So, a couple of weeks later, when my niece and I went to the Seattle Storm basketball game, I again stopped in Tower Records so that I could swap the CD.  They didn't have another copy in stock and they wouldn't give me my money back nor would they give me a store credit.  They had to order me another copy of the same CD.  So that means that I would have to pay $15 in gas to get a $10 CD.  That bites.  As of yesterday, they hadn't called me yet to tell me that the CD had come in.  But when we got to Tower Records, I went right to the musicals section and they had TWO COPIES OF THE CD!!  They never called me!  How rude!  So, I got my good copy and I was able to get it without making a trip up to Seattle just for that, but they should've called. :P

According to the KCTS (Seattle PBS) website, "The Light in the Piazza" is not playing on the Seattle PBS until June 18th at 11:30 a.m.!  What kind of first showing is that? :P According to excite.com's TV listing, it's showing on Thursday, June 15 at 9:00 p.m., and according to tvguide.com, it's not showing at all!  Who's right?? :-\

Good Morning.  Yesterday was the Vixter's dance recital. That pretty much sucked up the entire evening from 5 PM until it ended at 10  and then out for a bite to eat...of course before that was the laundry and dishes and shopping.....

and sneezing, lots and lots of sneezing................

Ah what an exciting life I lead!.

Today I shall be E & T from this here site, first we have church and Sunday School, then the Vixter wants to auditon for 2 summer shows at the local community theatre, they are doing a "musical showcase" by kids and they are also auditioning for" You're A Good Man Charlie Brown" then we have to go to my niece's 8th birthday party and then we have tickets to see Fairport Convention.

No Tony's for me tonight.

Good morning, all!  This will be one very long day:  I'm in Toyland till 1, than goddaughter Charlotte's dance recital at 2.  This will probably run till 5, and then I have to deal with my apartment and look for some Christmas music.

At the moment the phone isn't ringing with work, so I'm getting a bit antsy that I'll never work again.  I've been hoping no big offers will turn up while my father's health remains poor, but I'm a bit concerned there are no concert or recording offers turning up to bring in some extra cash to pay for things like plane tickets, car rentals, etc.  Feast or famine, c'est l'histoire de ma vie.

Oh, you poor baby!  For the past couple of weeks, I've been getting up at dawn, in order to get to work on time.  (They've discovered I'm good at taking care of the early chores, like restocking the milk in the front chill chest, taking the trash to the compactor, that sort of thing.  They've even started making "Honeydew" lists, in anticipation of my arrival.)

I've got a duck defrosting downstairs, and must decide how I'm going to cook it tomorrow (my day off, which is a Sunday reference, even though it'll be Monday).

Do I want to roast the bird whole, or cut it into it's proper pieces and do them separately?

Decisions, decisions.

I suppose I should re-watch Alton Brown's episode of Good Eats, "What's Up, Duck?"  I recall he roasted the bird in his cast iron skillet, but there's a few steps I need to review.

There's an interview with Andrew Lloyd Webber (http://vegasblog.latimes.com/vegas/2006/06/interview_andre.html) in the LA Times, where the Lord talks about his new Las Vegas production of Phantom of the Opera, but nowhere in the piece does he mention the sexiest man in the world (http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm/story/8365), who will be playing the lead.

In fact, he doesn't mention any of the actors at all.

I did have a banana and raisins in the oatmeal as well. Along with the oatmeal I had a mug of coffee with a splash of milk and I watched Fairly Odd Parents on Nickelodeon.

I was speaking Vixmom when I signed off (That is all). I was, in effect, channeling her since she will be E&T all day.

I'm not sure if anybody answered this, but THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA will be on many PBS stations live this Thursday june 15 at 9pm (till 11:30pm). Eastern. Not sure what happens on the West Coast.

If you're not sure if your pbs station is showing it, just go to pbs.org and plug in your local station. And it will give you the schedule. I know here, one of my pbs stations is showing it, while the other isn't.

However, i've heard that some pbs stations are showing it, but not live (i've heard on sunday june 18). So perhaps just check a few dates if you don't see it at first.

Woody - I suspect the reason they aren't mentioning the actors for PHANTOM in Vegas by name in situations like that is that some of the leads are double-cast.  For example, the role of the Phantom is alternating between Brent Barrett and Anthony Crivello.  If they focused on Brent Barrett, people who didn't see him might feel like they were getting the "second" cast, if that makes any sense.

Good morning!

More of the same here today: bright morning followed by hellish hot afternoon complete with thundershowers.

I'll be inside most of the day, I suspect, doing the usual Sunday chores like laundry. I must get the laptop moved to a convenient spot so I can watch the Tonys and take part in the party here.

BK - Mainly, the Talkin' Broadway party was attended by the regular people on that chat board, often along with spouses/significant others.  People whose names I think you might know included Peter Filichia, Barbara & Scott Siegel, Bill Russell and his other half bruceb, Bruce Yeko, Skip Kennon and Fred Landau, Rob Lester, Richard Connema (sp?), Wayman Wong, Seth Christenfeld, Milla, Ronnik (who incredibly won the grand door prize two years in a row, but everyone saw that it was pulled out of the hat fair and square).

How lovely that Kritzerland donated some stuff to the goody bags, by the way.

In the people-can-be-different-than-they-seem-in-cyberspace department, there was one person from All That Chat who seems at times a bit "nerdish" (for want of a better word) in his posts, but when I met him, he was articulate, erudite, knowledgeable, and a total delight.  I can't reconcile the swell human being I met with the posting style.  Go figure!

Good Sunday Morning to you, all and one!

I'm not sure what I'm going to do today.  Yesterday was busy, busy, busy.

I spent a good deal of time assembling boxes for LPs, CDs and DVDs as I must put many of these items into storage.  Thus far, I've filled the LP storage boxes (10 of them).   My "move-into-storage" target date is the 4th of July weekend.  Although the 4th is on a Tuesday, I'm taking that Monday off.

It's a year-in-advance solution to a pending move and the fact that I'm overflowing with items I have no in-condo storage space for.

But I have plenty of room in my storage locker/unit for these boxes since I have quite a bit in storage as it is.

I moved into the small condo more than 10 years ago thinking I'd be here 3-6 months.  I moved in with the bare necessities...and have since filled the apartment with things that need "space" to be properly stored/displayed/made available.

Oh, well...

As I mentioned yesterday, I had an unexpected windfall courtesy of the New York State Lottery Commission.  It wasn't Mega-Millions huge, but it was nice "surprise".  Alas, over the course of the past 48 hours, I've spent almost all of my winnings, but all my purchases have been worthy investments.

Also on the 4th of July weekend, I'm treating myself to a solo performance by Leslie Jordan called "Like a Dog on Linoleum."  A July 2 matinee is the final performance, and that is the one I'm going to see.

For those who don't know Jordan by name, he played "Beverly Leslie" as a recurring character on "Will and Grace"....and he was a major character in "Sordid Lives."

Buying the tux eventually came down to a "I need a tux now, and I don't want to deal with walking all over midtown comparing prices and styles" decision.

A couple of people and websites recommended a formal wear place down around Penn Station as the place I should go to get a great deal on a tuxedo.  Well, once I got there, it turned out the place had closed about a month ago.  All in the timing...

Since Macy's was across the street...  -And since DR elmore had tipped me off to their formal wear and suit sale...

They had a couple of nice tuxes for sale, and I settled on a nice, basic tux.  Nothing fancy.  Heck, it's just a tux.  I was also able to buy separates, so I didn't have to worry about any tailoring.  And the pants and the jacket together cost me $149.00.  -And because I was purchasing separates, I didn't have to pay any sales tax either!  *There's now no tax on pieces of clothing under $110. :)

James and I headed out yesterday to buy the rest of my outfit for tonight: tux shirt, studs, cufflinks, shoes, etc.  I had shopped at Sym's down in DC a couple of times, and they always had a very good, very well-priced selection of clothing.  The Park Avenue store was five floors of amazing bargains.  I was able to get everything I needed - and more! - for under $100!

*And, best of all, James and I seemed to be on the same page in regards to each other's clothing selection.  There weren't too many raised eyebrows, and "Put that back now" looks as we were browsing the aisles.  ;)

**And, as previously mentioned, I believe James has a new favorite bargain clothing store.  :)

Well, since the amount I won was under $600, they just gave me the cash.  If I had won over $600, I would have had to head downtown to the Lottery Commission office and deal with all the paperwork.  As for now, I just need to keep track of my "receipt" for my taxes.

Jose - The PJ GAME tickets are ALL the way to the side, so i figured you guys wouldn't have wanted them.  But if any center seats pop up at those dirt-cheap non-benefit prices for the final performance, you'll be the first ones I'll call.  :)

BTW, Jose, are you planning on seeing MAME in DC?  I do have an extra (i.e., free if you want it) box-seat ticket for the June 24th matinee, if you've been looking for an excuse to take a trip to the Washington area.  And I also have an extra (i.e., free if you want it) general admission ticket to ASSASSINS at Signature in Arlington for June 24th evening, but I figure you could get into that one free on your own.

Back from a difficult jog (did go the full distance, though), then I used up some credit and got the new Fox Charlie Chan box set.

What time is the Tony broadcast on the West Coast?

Aww... Thanks.  ;)

As for Mame and Assassins... Are you no longer going?  Or did someone else in your party end up cancelling?  -I would love to have the tickets, but I'm also trying to get a pair, so...

*And just so that you - and everyone else who reads this site knows - a little birdie has heard rumors that Signature will most likely extend the run again by one more week.

Jose - yes, my friend Julie and I are still going, we just happen to have the extra tickets.  As I'm sure you know, the box at the Kennedy center is actually a pretty decent seat, unlike boxes in Broadway theaters.  We also have an extra seat in row H orchestra (fifth row, orch starts with row D), but all the way to the side for that matinee; we got them when tickets were looking scarce, but have shall-we-say "upgraded" our seats so that we can sit together while just eating the cost of the two singles.  So they're yours if you want 'em and I'll be able to take a legit entertainment dedcution for them if you use them.  :)  But don't you have a knack for charming the box office into bettering your seating, maybe you could charm your way into improving that row H side seat?

The ASSASSINS ticket is general admission, so if you got another general admission, clearly you and James could sit together.

Then, I watched BEWITCHED which I had recorded off Starz! It's not a very good film, and I think the mistake Nora Ephron made was not trusting the original TV concept. Trying to go it one better by focusing on the lives of the two actors remaking the TV series was a big mistake. The TV characters were much mroe interesting than the warmed over, poorly written characters in the "real world." Shirley MacLaine was terribly misused as the Endora character, and the only one with any comic zing at all was Steve Carrell playing Uncle Arthur.

I think Nicole Kidman would have made a fine Samantha if she had been allowed to PLAY Samantha rather than the character she was actually playing who was trying to act Samantha in a TV remake of the TV series. Really just a lousy concept for the film.

Ended the afternoon with GROUNDS FOR MARRIAGE, a 1950 romantic comedy with Van Johnson and Kathryn Grayson. It's a slight film, but I've always liked it. David Raksin's "Toy Concertino" is a perfectly charming little ditty.

I wish they would turn off that Light in the Piazza!
It keeps me awake! ;)

Hello, all!  I'm back from Charlotte's dance recital, and she's off to the Tony Awards and thrilled about it.  The recital was way toooo long, but there were some wonderful moments.  I got back to find a phone message about a job! Of course, I may not like the show, or they may not like me, but it may all work out fine.  We'll see when we talk tonight or tomorrow.

I just had a phone call from DR Ginny in a car just outside Normal, IL.  She asked about all of you and sent her wishes for a successful Tony Partay!  By the time we got off the phone, she was back to Normal.

Keep those vibes coming!

I'm not crazy about the soprano, who's got a career going well, but I like the chamber orchestra and the medleys from the various shows, published for commercial usage, are quite wonderful.  There are three recordings in that Herbert series.

From the official tonyawards.com site

FOR WEST COAST VIEWERS

The Tony telecast will be recorded for prime-time broadcast on the West Coast at 8:00 p.m. PT. However, for the benefit of those fans across the globe who do not have access to the broadcast, our website coverage of the Tony Awards is live. We will post the winners' names as they are announced, beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. So if you prefer to remain in suspense until you watch the telecast, we suggest that you log on for our live Tony red carpet and pre-show coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. Then close your browser and come back after the telecast is over, at which point you can watch video clips of backstage interviews with the winners and presenters.

So I guess that means they are posting winners on the site live but not showing the telecast?

He's appeared in front of audiences many times. Was it the "live" aspect that was freaking him out? Was it the Broadway audience, many of whom would know good from bad.

I mean, after hearing him struggle with his nerves and have trouble negotiating key changes, maybe I should be more forgiving of the AMERICAN IDOL contestants.

Yup exactly.

I think the story was later told that someone had called Lucy backstage and told her Babalu Jr had been in a car wreck and hurt just before she went on...and even though it was a prank call, Lu was rattled and forgot her specs.  8) 8)

I like last year's supporting actress winner presenting to this year's winner. The Oscars do it (though with man presenting to women and so on), and it would be nice to do it always with the Tonys if possible.

 ANDREWS...... WALTON....... BRIDGE!!!!!
The name Walton is Anglo-Saxon in origin and is believed to mean "farm of the Britons" or to have meant 'Saxon settlement'. Even before the Romans and the Saxons were present, there was a Celtic settlement here. The Anglo-Saxon word for the Celtic inhabitants who lived here before them is "Wealas".

Walton-on-Thames was also identified by William Camden as the place where Caesar forded the Thames on his second invasion of Britain, however according to Elmbridge Museum there is no evidence to support this.

In the Doomsday Book "waletona" was noted as having a church, two mills and a fishery.

Standing on the highest point of town, St. Mary's Parish Church dates back to before the Domesday Book (1086 AD). The church is of saxon origin, with parts dating back to the 12th and 15th centuries. The square flint tower, supported by a 19th century brick buttress, contains a peal of 6 bells, the oldest bearing the date 1606.

During the first world war New Zealand troops were hospitalised in the now demolished Mount Felix House. They are remembered by the street name New Zealand Avenue, the Wellington Pub and a small memorial in the Homebase car park.

Julia Elizabeth Wells was born October 1, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, and later became Dame Julie Andrews.

Hersham and Walton Motors (HWM), now an Aston Martin and Audi dealer, constructed its own racing car in the early 1950s. Stirling Moss won his first Formula One Grand Prix in an HWM. In addition HWM was the world's first Aston Martin dealership.

There have been five bridges on the site so far and plans are well advanced for the sixth. Prior to the first bridge there was a ferry which goes back to, at least, the 15th century.

The first bridge, constructed between 1748 and 1750, was a wooden structure that stood until 1783. Canaletto painted a picture of this bridge in 1754.

The second bridge was constructed in 1788 and stood until 1859. Constructed of brick and stone it lasted much longer that its predecessor. This bridge was painted by Turner in 1805 following his sketching tour of the river Thames and Wey at that time.

 ??? ???

No spoiler....but I didn't realize that both Tony Franciosa and his one time wife Shelley Winters had BOTH passed away this (Tony) year.

Story was Lauren Bacall gave Shelley a ring and told her Tony was late for a date with her....where the hell was he?  Shelley said...you've got a date with my husband and you're asking me where he is?  Lauren's response: If he doesn't respect your marriage, why should I?

Should I or should I not have more tuna pasta salad.  Do you know what the most amusing thing about it is?  The entire bag of 16oz. of pasta is only a little over 1600 calories.  Plus the mayo and the tuna and the whole kit and caboodle is around 2200 calories.  Well, one could eat the whole thing over the course of the day and still not gain weight.  If I have one more helping I'll probably have had half of what I made - so 1200 calories - not bad.

Okay, move this show back to a normal B'way house and KEEP THE TEENAGERS OUT OF THE AUDIENCE.  I HATE these cheering sections - nauseating.  Other than that, I'm sure the two supporting actors were deserving of their awards.  I could've lived without Mr. Connick's pointless number and the "60 STARS 60".

Heading to bed??? WUSSBURGER!

So, Chaperone has won book and score - not surprising, given there were only three nominees in each category, which says more about the B'way musical than anything.  I was happy to see The Wedding Singer boys up - they're on my B'way Bound album and I believe they're the first of those new writers to be up for a Tony or even have a show on B'way.

The number from "The Drowsy Chaperone" was quite a bit of fun.  Is that indicative of the quality of the rest of the show?

I enjoyed the number from "Sweeny Todd" but I'm quite over earth mother Patti Lupone.  The overall effect of the "new" show is a letdown for me.  I'm a fan of the original orchestrations and lush orchestral performance...as important to this tragic piece, IMO, as the quality of the vocal delivery of the trenchant lyrics.

That's pretty cool!

I just finished catching up on the posts from the east coast broadcast and they gave me quite a chuckle- especially since so many of them matched my own thoughts at the time.

Did anyone notice a mishap in Howard McGillan's singing of Music of the Night- like maybe he forgot the words, or was starting to sing a different verse, and somehow lost his place- West Coasters, please let me know if you notice this or maybe it's just a leftover effect from today's earlier wine tastings.

I'm doing a running commentary.

Jersey Boys - I'm sure it's a wonderful show, but it just looked like a big rock concert to me.

Sweeney Todd: Underwhelmed - again, it may work in the theatre - but when the chorus burst into "Swing your razor high" there was no power and I don't like that tiny orchestration.

And I will second that. Yes, it is blue. I saw him on our local NY1 pre-show. It's blue and it's really unattractive on him.

Technically the title of the song is Show Off, not I Don't Wanna Show Off and it does not play as well on the small screen as it does in the theatre. In the Marquis Theatre, even in the mezzanine it's a great number but on television it just sat there.

A delightful surprise that "The Pajama Game" was awarded Best Revival-Musical.  I know it updated the show a bit, especially to accommodate Connick's style, which I find much more to my liking than anything Sinatra ever did.

Its winning may have been a signal that "Sweeney" went too far.

I find it unfathomable that it was rewarded for best orchestrations.  All I've heard has been a serious misstep downward from the brilliant originals.

Of course, I can't stay up all night, either.

I have work tomorrow.

But I still have to post until my numbers reach a milestone of "interest".

I thought tonight's show was much better than ones in previous years.

Perhaps it had to do with the quality...and variety...of really good nominees?

I can't help thinking "The Color Purple" should have been presented as a dramatic play.

Taking a story like that -- with all its power and popularity -- and setting it to music that, IMO, really doesn't match that power is kind of a letdown.

Of course, seeing it live might be a different experience.

I loved all those brief snippets from past Tony performances...especially that last few notes of Jennifer Holliday's "And I am Telling You"....would LOVE to see the whole performance again, I would

So this is what it's come to.

A private frenzy?  And with only one post to go before I must log off.

Sigh.

Oh, well.  Tis a far, far better thing I do...than I have previously done today.

Just checking in, so haven't read all your pithy comments yet. Here are a couple of mine...

Whatever possessed the producers to open the show with Harry "Mr. Mild" Connick, Jr? Instead of a BRIGHT beginning, we get an astounding BLAH. Not a good indicator of what's to come. Overall, I'd say, the show seemed subdued with not much spontaneity or real excitement.

Best musical number - The Wedding Singer. Runners up - The Drowsy Chaperone and The Jersey Boys.

Best choreography of a musical number - The Wedding Singer.

Isn't Sutton Foster adorable?

The Hal Prince Tribute was disappointing. His speech was short and sweet but failed to connect probably because he was in Las Vegas and not actually on set. I'd love to have seen and heard him live in the theatre dispensing some of his wisdom from all those years in the theatre. A missed opportunity.

They should have let Richard Griffiths continue speaking because his was one of the very few acceptance speeches worth listening to.

The plays get such short shrift. Why even bother showing a one line sentence spoken from the nominated plays? It's depressing. I know they have time constraints but they could've gained time by dropping the silly bits from the presenters which are never funny. They could've also made some of the musical numbers shorter (Threepenny went on too long). I still remember from a long ago Tony Awards show a whole scene from Lettice & Lovage that was so wonderful I went out the next day and bought the play.

The Tonys never used to be like all the other awards shows. IMHO what it needs to distinguish itself from the others is for the producers to think locally, not globally. I've said this before...when Alexander Cohen and Hildy Parks produced and wrote the show, it was always exciting and memorable. Nevertheless, I l loved watching the show and will till I die.

Congratulations to all the winners and all the losers. You are in a noble profession and work hard...and with passion. No mean feat.
