Well, you've read the notes, you are now hungry for a Tootsie Roll, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to figure out why Goober's are called Goober's and I'm not telling them.
-
And the word of the day is: INNOXIOUS!
-
I must say this WUSSBURGERING (our last post last night was at nine o'clock) is reaching annoying and epidemic proportions.
-
Yesterday BK, you wrote:
One should always have new toilets - haven't you seen The Conversation?
No, I haven't seen "The Conversation." I assume that there is a scene with toilets? Do I really want to watch this?? ;) Actually, I've already added it to my Netflix queue, so I will be getting it as soon as I turn in one of the movies that I have now...that I still have yet to watch. ::)
-
Last evening, my sister and I went to Lowe's and bought two, count 'em, TWO new toilets (and one toilet seat and lid...one toilet set included them and the other didn't) for my condo! I'd post pictures of them, but the pictures from Lowe's website are too big. ;)
Anyway, I'll bring them to the condo today at noon and the people who are fixing the floors (and who are being paid by the seller ;D) will install them. After that, I'm going to the Puyallup Fair! It'll be a fun day!

I second that happy actual birthday to DR Elmore. Have a wonderful day and enjoy being alive. That's my new goal anyway, getting all the good stuff out of life I can.

What a long night (that's turning into morning) I have bad insomnia lately, it's annoying. I ran out of stuff to watch so my neighbor lent me 4 seasons of Ab Fab. I watched 2 seasons and had to quit. I miss my DVR so much. I signed up for netflix though and I should be getting The Broken Hearts Club in the mail soon. I've seen it before but I thought I'd give it another watch, it's cute. I think I'm really going to like netflix, they have a great gay and lesbian selection of movies, and you can't find ones like that anywhere around here. Ugh....what to do with my time.
-
I just found Bent on netflix, that's moving to the top of my cue list. Thanks to DR Elmore I have a huge list of gay movies, alot I'd never heard of, to track down and see. It's kinda fun. I'm still looking for this Greg Araki movie called "totally F***ed up" It's about gay teens in LA. I can't find it anywhere. Well, I found it at a used store in Los Angeles but they wanted $40 for a used VHS, I'm not paying that. Anyway, if any of you know where to find it I would be very greatful.

Happy Birthday to our Dear Larry!
-
Good Morning to our Lady of Florida, Danise!

And on that note I leave you for the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund.
Later!

Good morning and a very happy birthday to our very Dear Elmore!
Here is a "live" picture of the sunrise here in Tampa that I took on the bus a few moments ago:

The sky was lighting up to celebrate DR Elmores Birthday!
-
Hi Dr Ben and Dear Reader Laura!
-
I spy the Birthday Guy Himself!
They say we are going to have a cold front (!) come through today and it will change the temps somewhat. Winter--here we come!
-
Would you believe that all that beauty is already gone and the sky is just it's normal self now?
Well, I have to fly we're at the bus station and my stop will be coming up.
Have a wonderful day all!
-
Good morning, all! Yep, the bitch is now officially 60, older than God and twice as mean. Thank you all for the wonderful birthday felicitations. They are greatly appreciated, and I feel so fortunate to kow so many wonderful folk from around the globe.
My email is still a mess, and I am currently relying on Roadrunner Web Mail. which tells me I'm overquota and occasionally returns mail. No amount of rebooting will kick my rgular email into gear, and I am praying that the new modem arriving tomorrow will solve the problem. Otherwise, it's time to buy a new Mac. Oy!
So, today I have a morning at Toyland, edits and some things to do for my editing group's resources file. After that, perhaps a trek to the NYPL, and then maybe I partay with a few friends.
Why was a Baby Ruth called that? Where did Snickers getr its name?

A happy Babes In Toyland birthday to Larry.
Thank you, DR Michael S! I have a reproduction of that poster hanging over my desk; it's a rather prettified reproduction of Bessie Wynn as Tom-tom the Piper's Son in the Act Two Toyshop scene, singing the BIG SONG. Miss Wynn, to my eyes, is not the beauty she was touted to be; I think Amy Ricard as Contrary Mary was much more stunning by contemporary standards.
Miss Wynn did two more shows after BABES, then went into vaudeville. During BABES, a publicity article said she was going to Europe to study opera. In the early 1920s, she said in an interview that she was stuck by director Julian Mitchell in boys' roles in theatre and she preferred the haute couture of vaudeville. In 1945 she played the Widow Piper in a touring production of BABES IN TOYLAND with Fred Kelly, Gene's brother. She died in 1968, I recall. Some of her vaudeville and radio arrangements are in the Harvard Theatre Collection.

Happy Birthday to our Dear Larry!
Hello, DR Ben! DR Danise, what a wonderful photo. I hope you both have a fantastic day. In fact, all I that for all of our DRs.

Dear bk:
HISTORY (http://www.tootsie.com/history.html)
1896
Austrian immigrant Leo Hirshfield brings to the U.S. his recipe for a chocolatey, chewy candy, which he begins producing in a small store in New York City.
Hirshfield names the candy after his five-year-old daughter, whose nickname is "Tootsie."

Why was a Baby Ruth called that?
Well that poser's worth a lecture:
Ask Yahoo (http://ask.yahoo.com/ask/19990913.html) offers:
According to the National Confectioner's Association, the candy bar was named for Grover Cleveland's baby daughter, Ruth -- although she died in 1904, and the candy was not manufactured until 1920, by the Curtiss Candy Company in Chicago. Another source, quoted in Tom Burnham's 1980 book, More Misinformation, suggests that the chocolate, caramel, nougat, and peanut log was first named for the granddaughter of the president of the Williamson Candy Company, where the recipe originated.
Curtiss Candy gave away thousands of Baby Ruths in promotions and priced the product at five cents, half the going rate. In 1921, when children began sending their candy wrappers to ballplayer Babe Ruth for him to autograph, the Yankee slugger demanded royalties for use of his name on the best-selling product. But the business of sports endorsements was in its infancy, and the courts turned him down.
WIKIPEDIA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_Ruth#Origin.28s.29_of_the_name) elaborates:
Although the name of the candy bar sounds nearly identical to the name of the famous baseball player, Babe Ruth, the Curtiss Candy Company has traditionally claimed that it was named after President Grover Cleveland's daughter, Ruth Cleveland. Nonetheless, the bar first appeared in 1920, as Babe Ruth's fame was on the rise and long after Cleveland had left the White House and 16 years after his daughter had died. Moreover, the company had failed to negotiate an endorsement deal with Ruth, and many saw the company's story about the origin of the name of the bar as merely a way to avoid having to pay the baseball player any royalties. Ironically, Curtiss successfully shut down a rival bar that was approved by, and named for, Ruth, on the grounds that the names were too similar in the case of George H. Ruth Candy Co. v. Curtiss Candy Co, 49 F.2d 1033 (1931).
A couple of twists to the story are referenced in the trivia book series Imponderables, by David Feldman:
In the edition called What Are Hyenas Laughing At, Anyway? (1995), p.84, he reports the standard story about the bar being named for Grover Cleveland's daughter, with interesting additional information that ties it to the President: "The trademark was patterned exactly after the engraved lettering of the name used on a medallion struck for the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition in 1893, and picturing the President, his wife, and daughter Baby Ruth."
The next edition, How Do Astronauts Scratch an Itch? (1996), p. 288-289, brings out a new and potentially more plausible (and prosaic) explanation. The author was tipped off by a letter writer, referring to another trivia collection, More Misinformation, by Tom Burnam: "Burnam concluded that the candy bar was named... after the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Williamson, candy makers who developed the original formula and sold it to Curtiss." (Williamson had also sold the "Oh Henry!" formula to Curtiss around that time.)
The writeup goes on to note that marketing the product as being named for a company executive's granddaughter would likely have been less successful, hence their "official" story.
As if to tweak their own official denial of the name's origin, after Babe Ruth's Called Shot at Wrigley Field in the 1932 World Series, the Chicago-based Curtiss company installed an illuminated advertising sign for Baby Ruth on the roof of one of the flats across Sheffield Avenue, near where Ruth's home run ball had landed in center field. The sign stood for some four decades before finally being removed.
Satisfied?

Where did Snickers getr its name?
WIKIPEDIA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers):
In 1930, the Mars family introduced its second brand, Snickers, named after one of their favorite horses.
...
In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Snickers bars were originally sold under the name "Marathon". In 1990, Mars standardized many of its global brand names, and the name was changed to Snickers.
And for a killer of a birthday treat:
In 2006, the UK Food Commission highlighted celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson's "Snickers pie", which contained five Snickers bars among other ingredients, suggesting it was one of the unhealthiest desserts ever; one slice providing "over 1,250 calories from sugar and fat alone", more than half a day's requirement for an average adult.

That's my new goal anyway, getting all the good stuff out of life I can.
Well, as Tom Lehrer observed: "life is like a sewer: what you get out of it depends on what you put into it."

I like: "Life is like computer software. It never functions exactly as intended, has plenty of bugs, and is constantly being upgraded. Moreover, the upgrades may not be better, but they are certainly more complicated."
And there is always: Life is like a vacuum cleaner - sometimes it sucks, sometimes it doesn't.

I like the name Zotz for candy, but don't think I like eating them
-
In a conversation just now, someone referred to me as "conscientious." I was quite pleased, but now I'm thinking that was just a polite way of saying I was being obsessive-compulsive. :)
I'll let that thought go over and over in my head for a while.

An official happy birthday to DR Elmore.

Our friends from Oz are probably on the plane and winging their way to New York City!
Although tomorrow will probably be a day of sleep and recovery for them (I've never flown from Australia so I don't know quite how long it takes or how the jet lag affects you) we will have happy thoughts when they arrive at the Milford Plaza.

The Devil made me do it!
Press Report (http://presstelegram.com/news/ci_4359867)
Man late for flight pleads not guilty
By Tracy Manzer, Staff writer
Long Beach Press Telegram
A 21-year-old Miami Beach man who allegedly called in a bomb threat for a JetBlue flight at Long Beach Airport after arriving too late to board the plane pleaded not guilty in federal court Monday.
Yechezkel Wells, who came to town with several friends to attend a wedding last month, apparently was upset when he arrived late for an evening flight to Fort Lauderdale on Aug. 26 and wasn't allowed to board, authorities said.
Wells - described by his lawyer as a college student - was quickly detained by FBI agents, along with three friends who were released after questioning.
During his client's initial court appearance in downtown Los Angeles, defense attorney Donald Etra told U.S. Magistrate Judge Charles Eick that his client was being prosecuted for "one moment of gross stupidity."
Gee - OJ could have used that defense!

I have to watch the last thirty minutes of THE PAINTED VEIL that I started yesterday, too. I also recorded TWO-FACED WOMAN from yesterday's Garbo festival, but I have seen it before, unlike VEIL and SUSAN LENOX from yesterday.

Good morning, MusicGuy, how is Sugar? I've been meaning to tell you we had a wonderful dog named Sugar when I was growing up. I think of her every time you mention your Sugar.

And, now that it is the actual, official, real day................
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LARRY !! :)
And I noticed, in reading yesterday's posts, that you share this birthday with none other than that lovely Penzance Pirate himself........Rex Smith.
I envision Rex paying you a visit tonight...... "Hi Larry, did you know it's my birthday also? I thought maybe we could figure out a way to celebrate together....."
From my lips to God's ears !.......

Hi Cilla..........Sugar is a dream of a dog.......a real joy of a companion, and definitely has her own personality.
In fact, she is "singing" at the back door right now, wanting to come inside. She is very much an "in the house" pet, and only goes outside to do any unseemly business.

Oh, and as far as the TOD --
When I was in Australia, I always had a great "tee-hee" whenever I heard someone ask a little kid of they wanted some " Fairy Floss " . It turns out, it is what we call cotton candy.

She is a doll!
Our Sugar was an indoor dog, too. She was part cocker spaniel and part pointer. She would point at building every once in a while. She was also black and white, but was mostly black with a white cross on her chest. My mother used to open the door to call her and would yell at the top of her voice "Sugar, Cootsie lover button coo, time to come in now"

Happy Birthday again to DR Elmore!
-
I have decided to take the afternoon off. I had a smoking relapse not long ago....ok the month of August... and part of September...anyway I have quit again and am going through brain fog. It happens for a few days while the body gets used to not having nicotine. Nicotine is great for short term memory. Anyway, I've done the bare necessities today and am not getting anything else done, so I'm going to use a little vacation time and go shopping.
Hopefully tomorrow I will be inspired and can write the two briefs I need to do this week.

DR MBarnum, re: a question you asked yesterday about TAR.
You asked why I am not crazy about the father/daughter team even though they did well.
There was just something about the father that rubbed me the wrong way.
I didn't actually see them do anything too genius.
They did seem fairly fit (moreso the daughter). And she was okay (but not a personality that really grabbed me).
Maybe my opinion will change when i see them more.

If I may ask, did you see the intro about them? She's gay and when she came out to her father, he was very upset. He doesn't understand. Part of what they are doing is trying to mend their relationship and bond again. What I liked was seeing how proud she was of him when he made it to the top of the walll after he had such difficulty climbing the rope and how he is clearly starting to see her and respect her for who she is. I'm a sucker for those types of stories

One of my favorite candy names:
ZAGNUT -- a candy bar popular in the United States that was originally launched in 1930. It was acquired by The Hershey Company in 1996. Its main ingredients are peanut butter and toasted coconut, and weighs 1.75 ounces (50 g). Also, very uncommon for a candy bar, it contains no chocolate.
Appearances in pop culture:
-- In the movie Beetlejuice, starring Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin among many others, the ghoul Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) uses a ZAGNUT candy bar to lure a housefly to its death. Betelgeuse promptly devours the fly.
-- Zagnut bars also appear in the movies Seems Like Old Times and The Great Outdoors.
-- Snake uses a Zagnut to rob the Kwik-E-Mart in a The Simpsons comic book.
-- In 48 Hours, Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) angrily purchases a candy bar from the precinct candy machine for Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy), who has been whining for dinner. Says Cates: "Here's your Goddamn dinner!" It is, of course, a Zagnut.
-
It's etymology (Zagnut) is a mystery to me.
Could there ever have been a Zignut? D'ya think?
-
Wow---I feel like I've stumbled into a wonderful alternative universe!
I have to submit my favorite weird candy bar names, which were made by Toms and consumed at the bowling alley when I was a child: "Full Dinner" which was bascially like a Butterfinger, (and where did *that* name come from?) and "Chicken Dinner Jr." which was one I was always afraid to try.
I'm new to this forum thing but will try to paste a picture of Chicken Dinner into this email.

Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
Ah, sleep! :)
-I was a little worried when I got in last night and still saw some of the road blocked off for the filming, but it appears that they're not shooting today. Well, at least not now. And, more importantly, they weren't shooting at 2:00am like they were last night. Well, the night before last night. or something like that.

DR JFL, just my opinion, but I really do feel that the label "obsessive-compulsive" is thrown around far too much and too casually. I often hear people use it when really someone just did a find job. There are many fields of endeavor when attention to detail makes all the difference. To me, it's all about excellence, a higher standard. I didn't hear the remark, of course, but "conscientious" sounds good to me. I'll get off my soapbox now.

Still catching up....

Welcome, new DR Edisaurus! Can you tell us something about yourself and how you found us?

OH! And catching up from a query from a couple of weeks back...
DR Ginny - I have an iPod shuffle. It was a gift from my brother, Don. I like it a lot, and it's been the perfect place to store my tunes for the drives between NYC and DC and vice versa. Alas, I do have to say that it has whetted my appetite for one of the more full-fledges models... And since the new ones were introduced last week... Hmm.. ;)
-
...And since one of my (very generous) Opening Night gifts for Cabaret was an Apple Store Gift Card...
;)
*I may just wait until January when Apple holds their annual sale.

Happy Birthday redux to DR ELMORE.
DR JOSE!!!! Interesting review....some people got it and make it pay, some people can't even give it away....

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR ELMORE! Is 60 really that old? Seems to me you're doing lots that you enjoy. Isn't that what it's all about at any age? Have a lovely day.

And we flood you with good wishes and on-line (Michael Barnum anyway) cards on your birthday.
We have dogs and cats and CDs and all sorts of other things.

Welcome Edisaurus! Do tell us about yourself

I do like a Zero bar. They are difficult to find, though.
I'm not crazy about the candy but I do like the name Skittles.
I also like Rolos. I know it's more about the candy name but I like the candy and I like the name.

I thought at first I had stumbled into a group of doctors, (DR) but now that I realize I'm a "Dear Reader", I feel the love!
I am a documentary filmmakerand I've love musical theatre since I was a child. My filmmaking partner is in NY so that gives me a great excuse to sneak up for a few shows now and then. I have a husband who is also in film (I'm an editor, he's a soundman) and 4 cats whom we serve.
I ended up on this forum while updating imdb listings for our current film. I was looking up guitarist Grant Geissman (I worked with him on a film a few years back), and saw he'd contributed music to the "Nudie" Making of...film. I saw the original film years ago and thought it was a lot of fun, and surfed my way here.
Thanks to Bruce---I really can't believe he produces all these albums, writes plays and books and still finds time to jog, watch movies and post every day. I feel like such a slugabed slacker!
Thanks for the warm welcome---looking forward to hearing more about the World of Haines.
-
And now I must get back to work.
-
Welcome new DR Edisaurus...I love the name! You will like it here!!! We are a fun group and it is always nice to have new people join us!
-
...and cat lovers are most welcome! Be sure to post some cat photos!

But before I go I will post a picture (I think it's a good size, I trimmed it down) of me as "Voice of the Foundation Center" I recently re-recorded all the phone messages on the Center's switchboard system and they took a picture of me while doing the project.
I now have a $50 Barnes & Noble Gift Card as a thank you for recording the spots. We went browsing on Sunday but I haven't bought anything. I was tempted by Grey Gardens but I'm still hoping to find it at Academy Records for less than $18.99 plus tax.

So, I'm still surprised each day to find myself... where??? Jeez, six years on the road... So, today I'm at the Marina loft. Yowza! Every few daze it seems I'm somewhere else... I am here through the first week of Oct, anyway. Then to my sister's place - again - to care for her dawg - again - while she hies herself off on a birthday cruise for a week. Thence, off I go Northward - again - to the cabin. Back to the Marina end of Oct, hopefully through mid-December or so. We'll see...
Still hoping that Jane and Keith will name the puppy Muzzbee... yup, it Muzzbee Love!

Thank you! I think I look a bit tired (I have been working Saturdays since August after all) but in general it's a nice photo.

Nice photo, DRBEN - VoC - and great shirt!

Yes, I did see that part, but totally forgot about it. Maybe that's why I got the vibes i did from him. Like I said, I didn't have any problems with her.
And re: him getting to the top. It's nice when the partner is supportive (i think she will be). But he looked fit to me. I wondered why he had so much trouble getting to the top (since he didn't look more than mid-40s to me).
I will be curious to see how far apart the teams are when they start episode two. Since they did not give the times it took to the climb the rope (i wish they had), this will give us a good indication.

DR FJL - the birth year listed for Frances Farmer in your quote yesterday was incorrect. Frances was born in 1913. She passed away about six weeks shy of her 57th birthday in 1970.

One of my favorite candy names:
ZAGNUT -- a candy bar popular in the United States that was originally launched in 1930. It was acquired by The Hershey Company in 1996. Its main ingredients are peanut butter and toasted coconut, and weighs 1.75 ounces (50 g). Also, very uncommon for a candy bar, it contains no chocolate....
I love Zagnut! The Top Foods on the west side of Olympia has them in their bulk foods candy section (it's great because you can load up on extra coconut...which I like). :D
Then there's the Whatchamacallit. That's pretty good. :)

I like Zero candy bars, also! ;)
I actually won a portable CD player from a Zero wrapper about 10 years ago! I gave it to my dad and he still has it...he said that he does need to get a new one, though. It's not working as well as it used to, but it certainly did last quite a while!

I now have a $50 Barnes & Noble Gift Card as a thank you for recording the spots. We went browsing on Sunday but I haven't bought anything. I was tempted by Grey Gardens but I'm still hoping to find it at Academy Records for less than $18.99 plus tax.
Well, if you can find something else to bundle with it, Amazon.com has a good price on the Grey Gardens OCR. ;)

I'm still in Missouri...I'm not planning on moving until around the 1st of the year. I want to go down there with a financial cushion in case I don't find work immediately. I'm really anxious to get out of here though, so it may happen sooner if I find the means.

What is the process to paste a photo into the reply window?

I love all these birthday wishes and I may have to have another tomorrow just to keep them coming! It would so cheer me up after all this IRS hell I have been going through. A lot of it is the consequence of my own stupidity, as my brother and his wife Lady Macbeth were so happy to let me know on July 5, but having to deal with all this only shows the IRS how financially incompetent I am!
On the positive side, you Hainsies and Kimmlets are fantastic, my dear friend BK didn't lose a cast member, I get to play with the Brain from Planet X, and I got paid today!
DR MattH, what were the four roles you read for? DR Jose, what time is your train?

Congratulations on getting Paid, DR ELMORE! It always helps.....

Welcome Edisaurus! [/size]
I’m not familiar with either of those candy bars. I used to have four cats, a dream come true. For now we are petless, which is about to change on Saturday.

But then we'll lose that classic house-breaking command:
"No shit, Sherlock!"

LOL-I never heard that expression, or didn't pay it much attention, until my brother said it this weekend. I'm going to have fun with it.

Jhvw-if you stop smoking now you won’t tempt Cillaliz to relapse in NY.
Ben-I like the photo! I want to call & hear your recordings.
Elmore-congrats on the birthday pay check.

-
We are picking up Sherlock, our 6 week old Bernese Mountain Dog. His mother weighs in at a mere 100 pounds while his father is 118 pounds and still growing. Are you familiar with the breed?
-
Oh....I didn't realize that my dance was so grew-sum....
-
It has been almost two years since we had a dog. After we lost Echo, our last Bernese Mountain Dog, and all our cats I said “NO MORE PETS!” No one believed me. ;D I’m really a cat person & with the arrival of a pet I’m beginning to weaken, first I need to get through the puppy stage. We plan to travel with this dog & my plan is for him to be a therapy dog as Echo was.
-
Yes, Jane, I know the breed well. My aunt had one, absolutely gorgeous boy he was, too. Unfortunately, he didn't live a long life but it was packed full of love.
I had a cat for 20 years and when he died my house was so empty. I was devastated. We were petless for 6 months, but one day I saw a fellow cat lover who made me realize that we were depriving ourselves of some quality of life by not adopting again. I fell in love with one on the internet (petfinder.com) and brought him home, along with his friend from the shelter. Two more strays added themselves to the tribe; now I think we're at our legal capacity!
Congratulations on your new arrival. What fun!
Here's a picture of my love-cat---much larger than when I brought him home, on the cover of a book. I like to think of him as the Fabio of the cat world!

A hale and hearty welcome and also a hearty and hale welcome and also a hartee and hail welcome to new dear reader edisaurus. Glad you found us!!!
Had my breakfast meeting and now have to decide if this musical director and I are a fit - dear reader Jose knows how important that is :-)
Came home, packed up about 120 Sondheim CDs to send to amazon, and a bunch of other orders - I got the big boxes shipped already, and now am going to ship the smaller packages. I had a hale and hearty jog and am sweating like a pig.

A very big welcome to DR Edisaurus. Looks like you've joined right in, and that's great! We're a very diverse bunch here, and you're certain to find folks here with a lot in common to yourself.

I finished the last thirty minutes of Garbo's THE PAINTED VEIL this afternoon. Nice movie and an ending that should have pleased many at the time. Today if the film were being made, of course, the ending wouldn't be so happy for any of them, I fear.

I think I found a lady-friend for Larry:
CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/09/07/southern.women.ap/index.html)
At a watermelon festival in Chickamauga, in the mountains of northwest Georgia, substitute teacher Clydeen Tomanio said she remains committed to the party she's called home for 43 years.
"There are some people, and I'm one of them, that believe George Bush was placed where he is by the Lord," Tomanio said. "I don't care how he governs, I will support him. I'm a Republican through and through."

Next I watched last night's premiere of THE CLASS. Loved most of it with an excellent collection of characters that have space to grow and develop. Some good comedy and some drama, too.
One character I didn't like was Andrea Anders (late of the pitiful JOEY). She played a bland nothing neighbor in that sitcom, and she's bland here, too, trapped in a loveless marriage with former pro football player David Keith and beginning an affair with a grade school sweetheart. Could easily have done without her character. She also looked older than the others in the group.
-
THE NEW ADVENTURES OF OLD CHRISTINE came back with some funny moments and an introduction of a new love interest for the star. Blair Underwood did indeed look super handsome as her son's new fourth grade teacher.
-
CSI: MIAMI had a ridiculous season opener with David Caruso assuming the mantel of Super Horatio. He fears no man, seems impervious to any attack, and poses with hands on hips in the best George Reeves fashion.
The character revealed last year as the lab mole, Natalia Boa Vista has now left the lab to become a field CSI, another very BROAD stretch of credibility.
Dare I think the show has seen its better days? I still love the high definition photography and great surround sound, but for drama, its believability factor has plummeted.
-
Yes, I did see that part, but totally forgot about it. Maybe that's why I got the vibes i did from him. Like I said, I didn't have any problems with her.

Duke & Lauren are a father and daughter Team from Rhode Island who were estranged for several years following Lauren's "coming out." Both were hurt and disappointed by the experience and hope that running the Race together can help them recapture the closeness they once shared.
Duke, a father of three, is the owner and operator of a successful company called My Little Town, which makes New England icons in miniature porcelain. A Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast, Duke loves his family and both he and Lauren share the belief that they must win at anything they do, including THE AMAZING RACE.
Lauren, a speech and language pathologist, is a lesbian who has been involved in a relationship for four years. She enjoys hiking, running and rock climbing and has a competitive streak that should help her along the way. Her primary motivation for competing on the Race is to bond with her father and prove to him that she is still the same person she always was

I started the high definition version of the cult musical SHOCK TREATMENT to end my afternoon of viewing. I've never seen this movie before, and though I will finish it, I fear I'll never see it again either. A couple of songs have been sort of catchy, but this plot makes THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW seem like Tolstoy.

Well... I was getting the "too many connections" error message earlier - about two hours ago - but all seems to be working fine now.

In the meantime... I replaced the light bulbs around the vanity in the bathroom, cleaned the bathroom floor, replaced the shower liner, threw out the garbage, boxed up and labeled the remaining "Nick stuff" in my[/b] room, did some laundry, vacuumed the living room, etc., etc., etc...
-And to think that I did all of the above and I'm heading back down to DC tonight.

Hi all! So Saturday is the big day for the new puppy, DR Jane? How wonderful!
-
Here's a picture of my love-cat---much larger than when I brought him home, on the cover of a book. I like to think of him as the Fabio of the cat world!
Is the book about your love cat? I had a tuxedo cat that lived to seventeen. She was near death when she walked into our apartment and claimed us.
Our Echo was almost 10 when we lost her. She was the smallest Bernese we ever saw with a top weight of 65 pounds. Boy could she move, kept up with every Border Collie we knew.

Well, the fridge finely went below forty so I guess it just took time for it to cool down. The washer, however, will have to go back because everytime I turn it on water comes out from under it.

DR Cillaliz and jhvw - I should be in NYC sometime during that week. When do you head back to home?

Thanks Danise. I'm trying to stay calm until he is in our arms and headed home with us. And then I have moments of "WHAT AM I DOING!" ;D

And then Mommy has to leave for NYC! :) Talk about a hard thing to do! Oh, and do I take it you got the boy? I thought that was the one the breeder was keeping. Good for you!

You bet!! The breeder is keeping one girl and three boys. The fourth boy, and pick of the males, has the blue eye so she can't show him. She is very dissapointed. Originally we wanted a girl.

TV GUIDE's Matt Roush said the second episode of STUDIO 60 is even better than the pilot.
It got nicely sampled last night in the ratings though CSI: MIAMI did get a larger audience (but it was off a couple of million viewers from its season premiere last year).
In fact, NBC and CBS both had good nights in the ratings last night (NBC won the night by .2 in rating and about 800,000 viewers, so it was close). ABC and Fox suffered in comparison.

What time?

Associated Press (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,214568,00.html)
Gonzales Calls for Law Demanding Preservation of Internet Customer Data
Tuesday , September 19, 2006
WASHINGTON — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Tuesday that Congress should require Internet providers to preserve customer records, asserting that prosecutors need them to fight child pornography.
Gonzales and FBI Director Robert Mueller have met with several Internet providers, including Time Warner Inc.'s AOL, Comcast Corp., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc.
The law enforcement officials have indicated to the companies they must retain customer records, possibly for two years. The companies have discussed strengthening their retention periods — which currently run the gamut from a few days to about a year — to help avoid legislation.
During those meetings, which took place earlier this summer, Justice Department officials asserted that customer records would help them investigate child pornography cases. But the FBI also said during the meetings that such records would help their terrorism investigations, said one person who attended the meetings but spoke on condition of anonymity because the meetings were intended to be private.
We could put surveillance cameras in every room of every building - that would help!

Jane - when are you arriving in NYC?
-
I will never understand the showing of dogs.
Standards for the Bernese Mountain Dog have changed very little over the years, and only for the better unlike some other breeds. Why people show there dogs is another question. ;D I expect Sherlocks parents, especially his mother, could make it to Westminster if the breeder where so inclined, but she isn't.

I watched THE CLASS also, but didn't care much for it. The actors seemed very over-actorish, I thought. They could turn it down just a bit.
I am looking forward to seeing JERICHO. It certainly looks interesting!

Ginny, I'm working on that right now. I need to stop in Pennsylvania & visit my friend which means I will postpone my arrival in NY until the late afternoon, early evening of the 4th.

-
DR JHVW, I found that, when I was ready to do so, the nicotine patches worked very, very well for me.
I never did try the lozenges, but they might be even better for all I know. But the patches were nice because you got a constant stream of nicotine and so avoided the possible relapse a sudden craving could create (since the gum's affect would wear off after a few hours).

In answer to the question about how Bailey ended up on the book cover: the real cat who is the "author" of the book, Blackjack, passed on before it was finished. The author is my brother-in-law, and since Blackjack was a very large tux cat, I was happy to have mine stand in as the cover model!

DR jhvw -- whenever you're ready to make a decision to quit, I just thought I'd throw in a supportive word about the Nicorette gum. I quit 21 years ago, used the gum, it really calmed the cravings and the jittery feeling, and ai also realized at the time that it had to be a total quit for me. To this day, I know that if I let myself have one cigarette, I could easily get hooked again.
Good luck with your decisions......... :)

Speaking of lozenges....I was having a MAJOR craving this afternoon that just wouldn't go away. It was driving me nuts...actually I've had cravings all day. So, I went to the store and bought the Control Lozenges. They are a lot like the gum. You hold them in your mouth for about 20 minutes while they dissolve. They don't taste the greatest, but taste better than the gum. It did take away the craving.
-
Welcome DR Edisaurus!

A few minutes ago the phone rang, the doorbell rang and the microwave timer all went off at EXACTLY the same instant. What are the chances, eh?

Well, you've read the notes, you are now hungry for a Tootsie Roll, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're trying to figure out why Goober's are called Goober's and I'm not telling them.
That first paragraph of the notes was one of the longest ........
-
I have decided I am going to quit for good. I think with the lozenges I can do that. I will not become a lozenge addict like my friend Rob, who never smoked cigarettes but became addicted to Nicorette and now has moved on to the lozenges, lol...
-
Yes NIP/TUCK is on, but it hasn't started here yet! :(
(we don't get F/X). Last year was better because we were only a few days behind.

Yesterday BK, you wrote:No, I haven't seen "The Conversation." I assume that there is a scene with toilets? Do I really want to watch this?? ;) Actually, I've already added it to my Netflix queue, so I will be getting it as soon as I turn in one of the movies that I have now...that I still have yet to watch. ::)
If you don't like toilet scenes, avoid TRAINSPOTTING.
-
To this day, I know that if I let myself have one cigarette, I could easily get hooked again.
Tell me about it! After chain smoking 2-3 packs/day for over 10 years, I quit - cold turkey! I stayed off the buggers for the next 14 years (although I spent 9 of those years living with a chain smoker). Then, in a VERY misguided attempt to get a date to quit, I lit up after dinner on a Thursday evening - hey, it's only one cigarette! Friday I bought one, pack; Monday was a two pack day and I was off and running - another almost 20 years of 2-3 packs a day! I finally quit as a welcome side effect of a two-week stay in the hospital with an esophageal infection and double pneumonia - there are times one just cannot smoke!
Nothing upsets me like watching teens at the Mall puffing away! When I started in th 50s, we didn't know better - now we do!
Yes, Virginia, one cigarette will a compulsive addiction restart! :'(

That's a shame. Otherwise, Mr. Barnum could have dated her.

Yes, I am living proof of that too. I am serious about quitting this time. I just have to do it and stick with it.

DR Edisaurus - this is my youngest. She was lost and starving and showed up on my doorstep last June. She's about 11 months old now, and finally getting along with her older sister

Finally did some writing - two pages - felt very good and a couple of very amusing lines.

I read for Venticello #1, Van Swieten, Rosenberg, and Joseph II.
You didn't read for Salieri???

In the meantime... I replaced the light bulbs around the vanity in the bathroom, cleaned the bathroom floor, replaced the shower liner, threw out the garbage, boxed up and labeled the remaining 3 in my[/b] room, did some laundry, vacuumed the living room, etc., etc., etc...
Which reminds me, Jose, you owe me a Nick chest photo!

And have you told the young man the unvarnished truth - quitting ain't easy, quitting is a BITCH! Non-smokers have no concept on how physiologically additive nicotine is. It is said by some (men, I suspect) that quitting smoking is harder than childbirth.

I smoked from age 18 to age 32, I think it was. I had tried to quit oh so many times...but once it was the right time to quit it was easy-er!
Of course I fell off the wagon a couple of years ago, but I found that having just one cigarette really made me feel sick for 2 or 3 days...maybe I developed an allergy or something...so now I am done with smoking forever. LOL!

Baby Kidnapped After Woman Slashed Missouri Mom's Throat Found Alive and Well
Tuesday , September 19, 2006
UNION, Mo. — A family spokesperson says that little Abigale Woods has been found and is safe and well, FOX News has confirmed.
The news comes nearly a week after the infant was stolen when a suspect rushed into a rural Missouri home, told a young mother "I'm here to take your child," then slashed the mother's throat and left with her now nearly two-week-old baby.
The child's mother Stephanie Ochsenbine, 21, said she did not know her attacker, and is now doing fine following surgery.
The attacker had gained entry to the family's home last Friday afternoon by asking to use Ochsenbine's telephone. Ochsenbine's boyfriend, James Woods, who is Abby's father, was at work at the time, police said.
They fought after the woman told Ochsenbine "I'm here to take your child," and Ochsenbine was stabbed several times and her throat was slashed.
Ochsenbine's 1-year-old son, Connor, also was in the house but was unharmed.
Ochsenbine passed out and police aren't sure how long she was unconscious.
When she regained consciousness, she picked up Connor and went for help, trying two houses where no one was home before arriving at neighbor Pat Bearden's home.
"She was standing there with blood all over her and said 'Somebody stole my baby,'" said Pat Bearden, 69.

Hey, about the smoking... my mom gave birth 4 times - it was the smoking that killed her. Not a pretty death.
-
By whom? The parents or the alleged kidnapper?
The alleged kidnapper. I'm guessing since it was a woman who stole a newborn, she posed as the child's mother after she kidnapped it. I could be wrong, but it wouldn't be the first time that's happened...actually I think it happened in Missouri one other time

Please, whatever it takes, kill that monkey on yer backs. Cuz the monkey won't rest 'til one of you is dead.

We arrive around 3:00pm on Wed (4th) and leave Sunday Morning (8th). We'll be at the Milford Plaza. I'll send you my cell phone number. Hope we can see you!
I expect so, at least on the 5th!
-
I'm working on it Penny. I'm bound and determined this time.
-
I watched THE CLASS also, but didn't care much for it. The actors seemed very over-actorish, I thought. They could turn it down just a bit.
Are you sure that it's not because your favorite Hollywood films are grade-D films with actors who have no idea what the word "emote" means?
-
PennyO - I think I've got someone to read the stage directions.

DR Jose took me to dinner for my birthday. Two margaritas and I'm ready to pass out. I think I will set the VCR, tape the two LAW & ORDERs, and crash.

Good evening Kimlets ... Just a quick pop-in here, and soon time to do a few evening things, and a meeting to go to.
Dear BK -- at least today has pulled itself up out of the land of the Wussburgers. The Living Room has a new DR, some lovely topics, some helpful topics......... now, all we need is Pie !
-
G'night DR Elmore........sleep well.
-
Evening greetings! 2/3 of my online order from TravelSmith arrived today and now I have 2 new items for my week in NYC. I'll have 3 if the backordered item arrives in time!
-
Hi Ginny - I went shopping today and found a few things that I'll take to NYC and a couple others I just needed to get. I love a sale.
-
Anyone who wants to quit smoking should NOT see Black Dahlia. There's so much smoking the screen practically catches on fire!
I just got a call from Marc Cherry (recorded) asking me to show up tomorrow morn for a Writers Guild Unity Rally. He sounded very chipper! I know I should go and support my fellow scribes, but I'm so incredibly uncomfortable in crowds of that type that I probably won't. I'll see how I feel in the morning.

They're marching and protesting in Hungary because the government lied to the nation. Imagine such a thing! The government lying to the nation! Good thing we live here and not in Eastern Europe!

RE smoking: I grew up in a smoking household - both parents. Fortunately my mother quit about 35 years ago and is still with us. My dad continued, even after surgery to repair an aortal aneurysm, and died of heart disease in his mid-60s. I attribute my compromised respiratory system and my proclivity to pneumonia to 18 years of second-hand smoke. When I was doing a lot of community theater, I was afraid I'd get a part that called for smoking - someone would have had to teach me. Never got such a part and have never smoked.
-

DR Edisaurus - this is my youngest.
Awwwww....looks like Bailey when he was a youngster!
My tux cat I had before my ancient one was Kunta Kittie----he looked exactly like yours-white chin and all! Lucky kitty who knew whose doorstep to land on! What's her name?
I see she's playing with one of those cat teasers. Something so cheap and simple---I wish I'd thought of inventing that. I'm sure they've sold millions of them!
-
Are you sure that it's not because your favorite Hollywood films are grade-D films with actors who have no idea what the word "emote" means?
Well, I suppose that could be true 8)
But not in this case! Ha!
-
Kunta Kitty, cute. Ours was My Sin. People kept saying she had the wild look of the black cat in the My Sin perfume commercials.
-
DR Laura,
This is my cow cat, Elmo, whom I mentioned earlier today. Can you tell the real Elmo from the Elmooos? As you can see, he likes musicals, too!
-
Anyone who wants to quit smoking should NOT see Black Dahlia. There's so much smoking the screen practically catches on fire!
You know, I found that whenever I would watch an episode of PERRY MASON I would want to smoke...the characters in that show often had a cigarette...but what would drive me crazy is that so often a character would grab a cigarette light it, take one puff, and then snuff it out! I would yell at the screen sometimes! LOL! How could they waste such a precious commodity right in front of me...me who was having major nicotine withdrawl! LOL!
-
The next two days will be hectic around here-yes again. I’ll try to post, no promises.
I’m not doing any shopping for NY. I would like to get another Wicked shirt when I’m there-love the one I have.
‘night.

DR Edisaurus, I am intrigued by your documentary film making...how long have you been doing it, and what are some of your films?
Also, how do you go about financing your films?
-
Edisaurus I don't see Elmo-darn. I am enjoying your avitar.

Things are running slow here-lol. I can see the OH SOOOO CUTE photo now.

Elmo is very handsome, Edisaurus.
My Joshie was a foster kitten from the pound. He didn't like adoption day, so he misbehaved in order to get sent back to us, where he has remained ever since. We don't foster any more.

-
DR Edisaraus, Elmo is very handsome
-
DR Edisaurus, I am intrigued by your documentary film making...how long have you been doing it, and what are some of your films?
DR MBarnum,
I've been working in film and/or music for over 25 years.
The good, the bad and the ugly: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0136897/
As far as financing, my most recent film, "Sacco and Vanzetti"
http://www.willowpondfilms.com/sacco_and_vanzetti.html
was supported with small grants from arts foundations and individuals. We are still deeply in debt because there is so much archival footage, music and photos that comprise the film.
Last month we signed with a theatrical distributor, which hopefully will pay for the film in the long run, but in the short run, we'll have to come up with another $20K to clear everything for theatrical release.
My partner and I have regular jobs; he is Ken Burns' producer, and I work on a show called "The Closer", write and edit short films for Disney, a show for HGTV and movie trailers, my bread and butter. These freelance jobs enable us to work on these films for little or no money. If you know of any rich Italians or other patrons of the arts, we gratefully accept tax-deductable contributions, as you can see on our website.
We have also had the great good fortune to have many people contribute their talents to our film, including John Turturro, Tony Shalhoub, Arlo Guthrie, Howard Zinn and Studs Terkel. And wonderful musician friends whom you many know: Michael Roth, who has done music for many theatrical productions in NY and LA (I saw his show, "Brooklyn Boy" last year in NY), jazz pianist Barney McAll and guitarist John LaBarbera. We are lucky indeed to have all these folks on board!
There are several screenings in NY coming up over the next few weeks, and the theatrical release will be early next year. And our last film, "The Internationale", is being released on DVD next month. Huzzah!
Now I have officially sucked all the air out of the room! Thanks for enduring while I've turned a nice inquiring post into a commercial for ME! :-)
-
You didn't read for Salieri???
[/b]
It was pre-cast as was Mozart and Constanze.
But I wouldn't have even if it hadn't been.
-
Sorry for the tiny print on the above...I'm still trying to figure out how to "work the room"!
-
Boo and Callie Sue---too cute! You tell boo to behave and not scratch up that pretty little kitty face!
-
I finished (suffered through) SHOCK TREATMENT. Well, at least now I can say I've seen it.
-
Sacco and Vanzetti - Wow! I am very familiar with their case and I want to see this. I'm a federal defender and just finished my second term on the board of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. I would love to pass the info about the film on to others - some who may be interested in helping out.
-
Next I watched a MURDER SHE WROTE rerun on the Biography Channel. Another from late in the run that I hadn't ever seen. Lots of famous guest stars in this: Hope Lange, Chad Everett, Gregg Henry, Michael Beck, Lyle Waggoner, and Julie Adams.
Always nice to see one I haven't seen even if the mystery was pretty easy to solve in this one.
-
HOUSE featured an Emmy-worthy performance from Joel Grey as a famous doctor/scientist whose plasma was filling his lungs. Among the most stark opening scenes in this show's history, I had to look away a couple of times.
-
LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT featured the new CO Eric Bagosian but an easily solved mystery. (Easily solved because there weren't enough suspects). Still, D'ofrino get to emote more tonight than he's gotten two in the last couple of years, and Kathryn Erbe had some harrowing scenes as well, rare for her in this show.
-
Is there a more perfect physical specimen of a male than Mario Lopez. His shower scene was jaw-dropping as the camera explored every inch of his upper torso on tonight's NIP/TUCK. Also glad to see Peter Dinklage join the cast as the male nurse.
-
Tomorrow, between running errands and having lunch with my ex-partner, I'll catch up with tonight's BOSTON LEGAL and LAW & ORDER: SVU.
-

Thanks Edisaurus, I loved hearing about your work! I find film-making, particularly documentary film-making, to be very interesting.

...but you failed to mention your work on SLEEPAWAY CAMP III: TEENAGE WASTELAND! LOL!
Not to mention "Sleepaway Camp II", too. Yes, let's not mention it. I can't decide if those are the "bad", or the "ugly". Actually, I think---both. The DVD edition of the "trilogy" does come in a pretty cool first aid kit. If the movies suck, at least you might as well have alluring packaing.
I will say that some of the worst movies are the most fun, once you embrace their awfulness!

DR Cillaliz:
If you find us some angels to help us with our mounting stock footage bills, I will cat sit for you ad infinitum! ;D
I do have a wonderful friend---a former film editor for Fellini, etc. who has offered her home in Tuscany for a week to anyone who makes a donation of a certain amount to our film. I can't remember the amount, seems like it was maybe a thousand, or a little more. But hey, it's TAX DEDUCTABLE! We had an article about this in an Italian American newsletter; it generated two $10 donations from little old ladies, but that's $10 more than we did have!
We shot part of our film in Rome, and rented her apartment there. If anyone is looking to take a vacation to Italy, I highly recommend renting one of her places:

So happy to have edisaurus with us. And I think many of us have seen The Music Man doc on the DVD! I'll be talking about The Music Man for reasons that will become clear in tomorrow's notes.
Thanks, BK for your kind and welcoming words. I've loved the Music Man ever since I was a child, when the movie first came out. So it was a treat for me to work on the "Making Of..." doc. I snuck up to NY for the revival of that, to be sure. Too bad Atlanta is so far away from Broadway...
I'm looking forward to seeing what you have to say about TMM in tomorrow's notes!

Hello DRs, new DRs, Birthday DRs, and Esteemed BK --
Just wanted to pop into the Living Room, make sure the lights were all on, and say goodnight. It's been a long day, and so it's time to go seduce Morpheus .
I'll look forward to tomorrow's notes BK - I'm a big TMM fan. ".....may I play my cross hands piece?"

Well guess I'll say Goodnight My Someone and get ready to go to sleep.

No, I haven't seen "The Conversation." I assume that there is a scene with toilets? Do I really want to watch this?? ;) Actually, I've already added it to my Netflix queue, so I will be getting it as soon as I turn in one of the movies that I have now...that I still have yet to watch. ::)
If you don't like toilet scenes, avoid TRAINSPOTTING.
Thanks for the tip. ;)

I grew up with smoking parents, also. My mom quit about a month before my niece was born (22 and a half years ago), but my dad is still smoking. :P Neither my sister nor I smoke and no on on my niece's father's family smokes. I have done community theater (and will again starting next week!), but I've never had to play a smoker and I don't know if I would be able to. I don't like to be around smoke, if I can avoid it. And the idea of playing a role that smokes, even if they're clove cigarettes, doesn't appeal to me at all.
-
edisaurus - if you do a search I'm sure you'll find it - but I've written about Monique Vermont, who played Amaryllis in the film, several times over the years - she's in my third book, the final part of the Kritzer trilogy, because I attended an acting class with her. Well, someone who knows her told her about what I'd written, he wrote me to tell me that she was delighted, and then one fine night she called me, and we had a wonderful chat.
And guess who just sent an e-mail to me via Kritzerland? Diane Baker, that's who.

The Puyallup Fair was quite fun! We just walked around and ate. I had a funnel cake! The second in as many months, otherwise, I haven't had a funnel cake in several years! It was quite yummilishious with powdered sugar, hot fudge sauce and whipped cream. I also had a very yummy burger and finally (just before we left), a chocolate/vanilla swirled soft-serve cone.
As for purchases, I bought some fudge (chocolate with walnuts, European dark chocolate and Oreo...to be enjoyed later) and a new wallet. I've needed a new one for a while and this one is quite nice.
And that was my evening at the Puyallup Fair! ;D

Good Evening!
Greetings from DC!
The trip back to DC was nice and uneventful. I really do love the Amtrak Acela trains. They are definitely worth the extra expense. *And since Amtrak's Guest Rewards program is currently running two promotions - 15% off your ticket, and triple reward points - the roundtrip only ends up costing about $25 more than the regular regional trains (at least during the off-peak times), and after just one more roundtrip, I qualify for a free ticket. Not a bad deal at all.
:)

Probably, Uncle Mike, if they were still alive they would both be very old.

It was great catching up with DR elmore earlier tonight. I just happened to finish running some errands in his neighborhood, so I gave him a call, and a couple minutes later we ended up at La Cocina. Fun, fun, fun!
-And, yes, DRs, your ears were burning earlier tonight. ;D

FULL FUNNEL NUDITY - that's the title of, oh, never mind.

DR TCB - Unfortunately, it appears that marriage has made Nick "shy". I've tried, trust me, I've tried. -Maybe I just need to take him to La Cocina for 2-for-1 margaritas. ;)

Welcome, Edisaurus.
-
DRs Cillaliz and jhvw - Hmm... That week of October is pretty crazy for me, and I'm not sure I'll be in NYC while you guys are in NYC. But I'll see what I can work out. The only possible day for me to meet up with you would be that Wednesday. At least right now. I'll keep you posted.
