Title: FEELING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Post by: bk on December 20, 2007, 12:08:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've felt the notes, the notes slapped you across the face, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - eight of them have come home and are currently being a-milked by eight comely maids.

Topic of the Day:  one of my absolute all-time favorite recordings is Janis Siegel and Fred Hersch's Short Stories (http://www.amazon.com/Short-Stories-Janis-Siegel/dp/B00000DP10/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1198139499&sr=1-6).  It was released back in 1989 and I remember seeing an interview with her in very early 1989, saying that she was recording a solo CD, and in just a few months, it was released.  It's basically just the two of them and it's absolutely beautiful.  I wish Amazon had clips.  I HIGHLY recommend this recording. :)

EPA DENIES CALIFORNIA BID FOR TIGHTER GREENHOUSE GAS CONTROLS
Wednesday, December 19, 2007

WASHINGTON —  The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday slapped down California's bid for first-in-the-nation greenhouse gas limits on cars, trucks and SUVs, refusing the state a waiver that would have allowed those restrictions to take effect.

"The Bush administration is moving forward with a clear national solution — not a confusing patchwork of state rules," EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson told reporters on a conference call. "I believe this is a better approach than if individual states were to act alone."

The long-awaited decision amounted to a serious setback for California and at least 16 other states seeking the new car regulations to achieve their anti-global warming goals. It was a victory for automakers, who contended they would have been forced to reduce their selection of vehicles in the states that adopted California's standards.

And now 'tis time for me to finish getting ready for my trip back down to Virginia for the Christmas and New Year's holiday(s).  I actually am a little sad not to be in New York City this year for the holiday(s) - mainly since I wasn't in town last year at this time either - but I am looking forward to spending some quality time with my friends and family.

Well, I think I will be bringing one more bag to check - thankfully, it's a small one - so I better get that one packed, and then it's off to the airport.

Thanks for the Travel Vibes.

THE NEW REPUBLIC (http://blogs.tnr.com/tnr/blogs/the_plank/archive/2007/12/19/quot-jar-jar-balrog-quot.aspx)

Quote
Why did you have to go and mention The Phantom Menace and Jar Jar Binks. Now I'm going to spend my day thinking about forcing George Lucas to watch his crappy prequels--Clockwork Orange style–and then start yelling at him:

“See, George, you prick. See how much they suck! Do you see what a piss poor job you did? Jar Jar Binks? What, did you take a crap, look down and think ‘I’ll give that turd a whiney Jamaican accent and piss the world off.’

And what’s with calling Darth Vader ‘Annie.’ Are you out of your ever-loving mind. Darth Vader, biggest, baddest, villain to ever hit the screen–Annie! And who the hell would cast Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader?

Why did you have to ruin it, George? Why?!? You just couldn’t leave well enough alone, could you. And don’t get me started on the bullshit ‘Special Editions.” Han Solo killed Greedo in cold-blood, you ass; he didn’t act in self-defense. God you suck!!!

Nice job ruining one of the greatest stories ever put to film. Now every time I watch Empire Strikes Back I think, Yoda you’re just a punk who ran from the emperor when things got a little tough. Luke, why are you scared of Vader? He’s just a spoiled brat.

ARGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Actually, I feel a little better now.

We should invite this guy to post on HHW.

TOD:  These days anyway, for all its bursts of energy, the Donna Summer two-CD anthology makes me feel warm and fuzzy, as does the Chaka Khan CD Epiphany.

Have we mentioned that when Chaka Khan takes over as Sofia in Color Purple in January, she will not do any matinees?  It is good of them to tell people upfront about this.  I saw Chaka Khan when she was in the Stevie Wonder revue in Vegas at the Venitian, and she was a wonderful presence onstage.

"Roll back the plains,
There's too much sky for me...."

Today's song of the day recalled "A Million Miles Away Behind the Door"...and the lyric above is rather poignant, too.

I'm always amazed at how much "sky" there is to see down here in this part of South Carolina.  It's not flat here, but it's not overly "hilly", either.  The landscape rolls...has its highs and lows...but the sky is omnipresent and dominates everything you see.

It can be overwhelming at times.

I spent some time yesterday perusing my Man from UNCLE set.  It was interesting comparing the color pilot with the b&w broadcast version.  The color pilot comes in at slightly over an hour, and it was fascinating to see the trims they made, and the scenes they reshot to bring the show down to running time.  Also, there's a different "Mr. Waverly" (not even the name they use) in the pilot.  And for some reason, they renamed the "fake" character that Pat Crowley portrays.  In the color version, she's "Mrs. Van Essen".  In the broadcast version, it's "Mrs. Van Every" or something like that.  I had noticed in the b&w version (which I watched first) that they had looped all of those references.  I can't for the life of me figure out why--was there a real Mrs. Van Essen who worked for UNCLE?  ;)

Good morning, all!  What the hell happened to the site this morning?  I finally gave up with it and went on to other challenges.  And now here we are.

I've got some writing on the preface to "Lady of the Sliipper" to work on today and a couple of things to wrap before tomorrow.

I had peculiar dreams last night: something about Miami University 30 years ago, and this got me wondering: why is it all my dreams are in the past? It's always college settings, or family events and places.  It may be a nightmare with a psycho killer in a dormitory or the Blair Witch in my Aunt Lois' back yard of her farm near Columbus, OH, or forgetting lines in a summer theatre production, but I swear I never dream about friends or events from the past 30 years of my life in Manhattan.  Oy!

Title: Re:FEELING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT

The first day after Christmas my true love and I had a fight
And so I chopped the pear tree down and burned it just for spite
Then with a single cartridge, I shot that blasted partridge
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me

The second day after Christmas, I pulled on the old rubber gloves
And very gently wrung the necks of both the turtle doves
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me

The third day after Christmas, my mother caught the croup;
I had to use the three French hens to make some chicken soup
The four calling birds were a big mistake, for their language was obscene.
The five gold rings were completely fake and they turned my fingers green

The sixth day after Christmas, the six laying geese wouldn't lay,
I gave the whole darn gaggle to the A.S.P.C.A.
On the seventh day what a mess I found
All seven of the swimming swans had drowned
My true love, my true love, my true love gave to me

The eighth day after Christmas, before they could suspect,
I bundled up the eight maids a milking, nine pipers piping
Ten ladies dancing, 'leven lords a leaping,
Twelve drummers drumming and sent them back collect
I wrote my true love, "We are through, love,"
And I said in so many words,
"Furthermore your Christmas gifts were for the birds!"

Oh, I certainly do...and wasted no time in purchasing them.

Good afternoon!

Well, after a calm period with no theatre January will be busy.

Anthony and I are seeing The 39 Steps, an "hilarious" mystery, according to all the press and then I'm seeing The Little Mermaid (I exchanged my strike-cancelled ticket for a new date) and I'm seeing the London production of Sunday in the Park with George.

And now I will take leave.

Safe travel to Jose.

Later, gaters.

I'm a little jazz bird
And I'm telling you to be one too
For a little jazz bird
Is in heaven when she's singing blue
I say this with regret
But you're out of date
You ain't heard nothin' yet
Till you syncopate

When the going gets rough,
You will find your troubles all have flown
If you warble your stuff
Like the moaning of a saxophone
Just try my recipe
And I'm sure you'll agree
That a little jazz bird
Is the only kind of bird to be

Title: Re:FEELING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Post by: JoseSPiano on December 20, 2007, 12:16:44 PM
My trip down here to Richmond was relatively uneventful.  I splurged on a car service to La Guardia this morning since I had one - possibly two bags too many to take with my on the subway and the bus.  I didn't leave my apartment until just after 7:00, but I was LGA at 7:18.  -Well, worth the splurge.

Checking in was very fast.  And then I walked to the end of the security screening line.  And walked.  And walked!  However, all in all, I made it through security in about 20 minutes.  Not too bad.  It easily could have been worse, longer.  *They were handing out "progress cards" to random people in line to see how fast the screening lines were moving this morning.  An official from the TSA was giving passengers a yellow card with a time/date stamp on it, and once they were through the line, they were to turn that in to the official on the other side of the gate.  I think having the "eyes" there helped to keep things moving.

Title: Re:FEELING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Post by: JoseSPiano on December 20, 2007, 12:23:29 PM
Then came Gate 5A.

5A is the gate that Delta uses for their smaller planes, puddle jumpers.  On a good day, they can board a different flight from that gate every ten minutes or so.  The passengers proceed down a gangway to a tarmac, and then are bussed to their plane.  Well... This morning was not a "good morning" at Gate 5A.

My flight was scheduled to depart at 8:55.  We didn't board until 8:50.  And there were four flights after us who also should have been boarding by that time.  But we did board, and pulled away from the gate around 9:30.

We took off at 10:00. :-\

Thankfully(?), I ended up napping as soon as I sat in my seat.  The sounds of the engines revving up to take off woke me up, so the "wait" really wasn't a wait for me.  Sensing that we were going to be coming in late, I did call my parents at the gate, and just told them to aim to get to the airport around 11:00.  -Which turned out to be when we touched the ground at RIC.  However, since they were running a little bit late... ;)

Title: Re:FEELING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Post by: JoseSPiano on December 20, 2007, 12:30:29 PM
There was one bit of "humor" this morning at the airport.  After walking down the gangway at Gate 5A, we  boarded the bus to take us to our plane.  The bus started moving, turned left, then stopped.  And then it was time to de-bus.  We had literally travelled about 25 feet to get to our plane!  None of us on the bus knew that it was time to get off the bus until the driver opened the doors... and even then were still weren't really sure this was where we were supposed to get off.  Then an eight or nine year old boy said to his mother...

"Oh, come on!  You mean they made us wait for that?!?!?"

Which made everyone on the bus laugh.  Or at least smile.

DR JoseSPiano - did your parents proceed to take you to the local Burger King for breakfast?  ;)

Actually, we went to "True Taste" for Chinese Food.  Pretty good Chinese food.  -Although, both my parents ordered their indicated "spicy" dishes "not spicy".

Before lunch, we stopped at Michael's so that my Mom could make a quick scan of the 1/2-price Christmas decorations...  While my Dad and I drove around the parking lot.  "Oh, I won't take too long."  ;)

After lunch, we stopped at Walgreen's.  My mom used her coupons, and she even gave me a set for me to use.  ;)  Lots of "2 for 1" deals right now.  So, now they're stocked up on Folger's Coffee, Swanson Chicken Broth, and Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream (that 2 for $4.00 - not a bad deal... although, they only stocked five flavors).  And almost all of the Christmas stuff at Walgreen's - candy, decor, even toys - has already gone 1/2-price.

And I'm pretty sure they'rewe're going back tomorrow... To use the rest of the coupons.

This was the episode that introduced Kerr Smith to the show in a major story arc that concluded a couple of weeks ago.

:)  Yes!  Those are great fun - both to perform and to listen to.

This be fun!

A Christmas Carol

One very familiar type of song is the Christmas carol. Although it is perhaps a bit out of season at this time. However, I'm informed by my "disk jockey" friends - of whom I have none, that in order to get a song popular by Christmas time, you have to start plugging it well in advance. So here goes. It has always seemed to me after all. That Christmas, with its spirit of giving, offers us all a wonderful opportunity each year to reflect on what we all most sincerely and deeply believe in. I refer of course, to money. And yet none of the Christmas carols that you hear on the radio or in the street, even attempt to capture the true spirit of Christmas as we celebrate it in the United States. That is to say the commercial spirit. So I should like to offer the following Christmas carol for next year, as being perhaps a bit more appropriate.

Christmas time is here, by golly,
Disapproval would be folly,
Deck the halls with hunks of holly,
Fill the cup and don't say "when."
Kill the turkeys, ducks and chickens,
Mix the punch, drag out the Dickens,
Even though the prospect sickens,
Brother, here we go again.

On Christmas Day you can't get sore,
Your fellow man you must adore,
There's time to rob him all the more
The other three hundred and sixty-four.

Relations, sparing no expense'll
Send some useless old utensil,
Or a matching pen and pencil.
"Just the thing I need! How nice!"
It doesn't matter how sincere it
Is, nor how heartfelt the spirit,
Sentiment will not endear it,
What's important is the price.

Hark the Herald Tribune sings,
Advertising wondrous things.
God rest ye merry, merchants,
May you make the Yuletide pay.
Angels we have heard on high
Tell us to go out and buy!

So let the raucous sleigh bells jingle,
Hail our dear old friend Kris Kringle,
Driving his reindeer across the sky.
Don't stand underneath when they fly by.
Actually I did rather well myself, this last Christmas. The nicest present I received was a gift certificate "good at any hospital for a lobotomy". Rather thoughtful.

Quote
JD: This was very different than most movies, than most characters, because the character actually kind of came out of the singing, out of the, you know, the words, Sondheim's words, his melodies, the emotion that the arrangements evoke -- so yeah, that's where I first ... I heard him before I saw him, I guess. But also like we'd talked about early on, these great, old silent films, silent film stars like Lon Chaney, and on into the next generation of actors like Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff ...

Senator from Oregon comes thru:

Quote
This week, Log Cabin's strongest ally in the U.S. Senate, Gordon Smith, introduced the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act (S. 2521), which would extend domestic partner benefits to federal employees.  This bill, which Sen. Smith introduced with Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), would provide benefits to same-sex domestic partners of federal employees such as life and health insurance, family and medical leave, and eligibility to participate in federal retirement programs.

This comes one week after Sen. Smith also introduced a bill to finally end the draconian ban on HIV-positive visitors to the U.S.  (A practice, by the way, that even China has recently ended, leaving America in the rare company of Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Libya as countries that discriminate against HIV-positive travelers and immigrants.)

Alas, this Mr. Smith will probably not be going back to Washington.  His approval ratings here are tanking and he just got excoriated by the Oregonian this morning for his defense of Trent Lott's Thurmond comments the other day (which he is now backpedaling on, saying he was misunderstood).  OTOH, DS Betsy got to know him personally when she was Media Director for the State Senate Caucus here and Smith was still in the Oregon Senate, and she said he was one of the friendliest people down there at that time.

DerB, you may find this hard to believe, but I was actually a Young Republican once (and not just because I was young once, LOL).  I have a personally autographed picture and letter from Richard M. Nixon.  My mother's bridge partner was his campaign chairman for the western states in the 1968 campaign and he gave me Rose Mary Woods' private address to send a fan letter to (this was obviously years before Ms. Woods became infamous for her dictaphone-erasing skills), and I was very excited to get a response from him several weeks later.

Actually, my mom was the "career" Dem while my Dad tended to vote R.  My father was one of the national spokespeople for Employer Support of the Reserve/Guard during the first Iraq conflict and went back and met personally with Bush I/Quayle, came back and opined "Those are the two biggest idiots I've ever met in my life," and vowed never to vote R again.  Believe me, it was a shocker for us kids.

Smith is generally quite well regarded, though he's been getting a lot of negative press for his (dare I say it?) flip flops of late, this Thurmond/Lott thing being the latest.  He's seen as quite vulnerable in 2008, though no Dem has stepped up to challenge him.  There's buzz that former Gov John Kitzhaber will run, but the smart money is against that.

Tales From the Aggrieved:

At my exes funeral, my sister-in-law informed everyone that my daughter had told me not to attend the funeral because my younger son did not want me there. Well, I suspect my son did not want me there, but I also doubt he expressed that to his sister. I know damn well she never expressed any such thing to me! Needless to say son's wife had a hissy fit and was railing on and on at my daughter (who was NOT a happy camper).

Truth be told, I told my daughter I'd just as soon not go, but if she would be more comfortable, I would be pleased to attend and be on my best behavior.

The Egg Nog recipe is from my exes great-great-aunt "Scotch Mary". (Or maybe she was the cook>). Anyhow, the brew is great! If you make the basic egg/sugar/booze base separate, adding the lightly whipped cream just before serving, you can save the left overs for a good long time. (I've had left-over eggnog the following Thanksgiving).

On jewelry, the current thinking seems to be my daughter can have it "on loan" , she must agree to will it to her niece.

Of more interest should be the service for 12 china (at about $300/place setting) and the hand-wrought sterling flatware at about $3000 the set.

I managed to get Mr. Lurie's package shipped, so that's the end of the postal office for me until after Christmas - I only had to wait about ten minutes.  Then I picked up a couple of things at my mail place and now I am comfy and warm in the home environment (it is rainy and cold out - well, by rainy we've had some consistent droplets which are calling themselves rain).

Well, Mac has "Grab":

Quote
1.  Open Grab (located in /Applications/Utilities).

2.  Choose Capture > Selection.

3.  Move the pointer to a corner of the area you want to capture.

4..Drag the pointer across the area and release the mouse button.

Not as "easy" as the few keystrokes in Windows to get a screen cap, but there are some programs out there that will do that too.  -Or you could just add "Grab" to your dock for easy access.

This evening, my mom discovered that one of her freezers was "defrosting" itself.

That led to a flurry of rearranging things in her top-loading freezer to accommodate things melting in her upright freezer.  Then we accommodated more things into her refrigerator's freezer.

She is of the opinion that I did not close the door properly when I put an ice pak inside the freezer Monday evening.  I am of the opinion that this may have nothing to do with the door not being closed all the way (it's a 15-year-old freezer).  I also pointed out that it had to have been a more-recent-than-Monday thing since minor thawing had taken place.  Too, I am of the belief that she has removed a couple of things from the freezer since Monday, but I don't want her to be more upset than she is.

At any rate, I am the fall guy.   :(

The egg nog recipe has made me quite thirsty.  I loves me some egg nog.

I've got disc 6 of BROTHERS & SISTERS to begin now.  I can't say that I'm not enjoying it, but I do find it, when I'm not laughing at its outrageous surprise bits of humor, just a bit "precious," too literate, and way too neurotic. How can any of these asses have partners when you'd think the sensible ones after meeting the "family" would relocate and change names. Perhaps that's the creators' modus operandi of maintaining their superiority to the soap opera plots they're employing. And, boy, is it a soap! more coincidence than a Dickens novel and some of the same plots I was watching on my lunch hour in the 70s on RYAN'S HOPE, ALL MUY CHILDREN, and ONE LIFE TO LIVE.

RE: last night's SEASON/ or SERIES finale of JOURNEYMAN

spoilers

DR MattH, I was wondering if you could explain what you understood from the last scene.

It actually confused me.

Because Dan told her (his wife) that he would not leave.

Then he was watching her go to sleep.  I thought he was going to do something with his video camera.

I've been trying to find a forum about this last episode (apparently televisionwithoutpity does not do this show).

The whole eyeball thing made absolutely no sense to me.  But now that i read what someone else wrote (that katie sort of woke up and actually got to see dan travel( it makes sense.

Am i the only one that had absolutely no idea what the eyeball thing was??

Anyways i thought it was a good final show.  Finding out about evan and when dan started travelling was good.

The part with olivia saying she thought it would be a while before they met again didn't make sense to me at first.

But it was a nice ending.

Is there anyway this show won't be ending? It's really grown on me.

I found nothing confusing about JOURNEYMAN, DR Jennifer.

Dan's wife basically wanted to go back to their old life, and Dan, of course, said that would never happen.

He also as much as said that he wanted to stay together, but that if his time traveling was going to be a burden to her, he could understand her feelings, but that HE felt he was contributing something major to the world, making a difference, and really wasn't eager to give that up even if he could (she was urging him to try medication to induce sleep that might help control the time traveling.)

She had mentioned earlier that she wanted to see him disappear but had missed him the last time it happened due to her meddlesome sister (who REALLY wore on my last nerve.) Dan roused her out of sleep as he was vanishing, and she got to see it for the first time.

The camera zooming in on her pupil I didn't read anything symbolic into. Rather, it was just a different way of "fading to black."

For our Christmas movie this year, we watched MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. I think all of us were so full of food and drink that it video lulled us into sleep. I know I nodded off a couple of times, and I looked at everyone else whose heads were also bobbing up and down.

When it was over, we put in the Alister Sim SCROOGE and watched about a half an hour of it which held everyone's attention much more, but by 10:30, I was exhausted, and I excused myself and came home.
