Title: THE TROUBLE WITH E-MAILS
Post by: bk on November 22, 2009, 12:36:37 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had good tone and no attitude, and now it is time for you to post until the troubled cows come home.  They're currently reading and misunderstanding all their e-MOOls.

Well, I must be going.  Tonight, I'm ushering for Eric Michael Gillett (http://www.washingtoncenter.org/season/season_detail.asp?event_id=1104), here in Olympia.  He's doing four performances in the WCPA Black Box, which holds about 120 people (at the most).  It should be very good!

Eric was also in the cast of All About Us up at Westport.  -I wonder if he's tried to get any of the cabaret shows he's directed for Karen Akers out to that venue too.

I saw a clip about Karen's show on his website (http://www.ericmichaelgillett.com/) (there's a link near the bottom of the "Directing" page) and at his show last night, they said that they try to get a couple of shows in the Washington Center Black Box theater (where Eric Michael performed tonight) that play several nights, so maybe I'll suggest her...unless she costs too much. :)

Quote from JMK:
Quote
Oy, what a day.  We spent a good hour to an hour and a half at La Manse.  Of course we found more "issues" this time since we're really serious now, LOL.  It seems likely it needs a whole new roof, and there are signs that at one point one of the kitchen sinks (yes, there are two--it's one of those huge gourmet kitchens, though the appliances are ancient) leaked and part of the rec room ceiling underneath in the basement has been removed.  I also did a walking tour of the property and discovered that someone had been dumping garbage part of the way back so that will need to be dealt with.  But we're still excited.  The big issues are, of course, the mechanicals--furnaces, pool pumps, etc.  The pool, which is more or less drained, has a little residue of sludgy brown water in the deep end so we're wondering what cleaning that up will entail.  There was also a poor little tiny dead mouse in the shallow end we hadn't noticed before.

Maybe the mouse killed himself when he found out they had accepted your offer!

Can you tell I'm having trouble sleeping?

Soon I'm going to take the dog for a good long walk, and then time to get ready for a morning of rehearsals and singing.  Perhaps I can catch up on my sleep during the sermon.

Good morning, all! A quiet day today. Whenever I think this cold has run its course and I'm over it, it manages to come back and bite me. I'm thinking about seeing my doctor because I'm beginning to wonder if I may not have picked up something during the McGlinnventory that's hanging around and helping this thing along. I'm starting to sound like a HOUSE storyline.

Everything else is quiet for the nonce.

Princess Caroline Slept Here, or Rather There!

Ahhh, Monte Carlo!  The spot where you hobnob with the rich and famous, not to mention the famous and rich.  When we arrived yesterday morning, there was a gorgeous yacht berthed next to us, which was about two hundred feet long (or so).   She was named the Lady Moura.  From what the locals told us, music had been blasting from the ship night and day for the past three days.  Princess Caroline was holding a charity event in Monaco, which was apparently centered on the Lady Moura.  This ship, but a stone’s throw from our deck was the temporary residence of the Princess.  I mean, why would you want to stay in the drafty old palace with your brother, when you could party all night on a yacht.  Whatever the charity event happened to be, it was an all week event with lots of marathon and some shorter foot races up and down the hill.  Now, a few minutes ago, the final money total and the final thank you were being announced on the deck in front of the Lady Moura.  One of the speakers was a very lovely young lady, who may or may not been the Princess.  The crowd was rather large, so I couldn’t get close enough to see exactly.  But, even if I didn’t hear her speak, she did sleep rather close to me last night; and let me just say that she didn’t do much sleeping!!!

Last night was a very nice dinner with the Assistant Cruise Director, who is also one of the entertainers onboard the ship.  She invited two ladies who were traveling alone and I to dine with her.  We had a very great time, and I had a chance to share my dogs of Pompeii story.  Carol, who was one of the single ladies (no, no we are talking matronly here), knew all about the dogs.  There are apparently thirty nine dogs that live and roam in ruins of Pompeii.  Strangely enough, the black dog (my buddy) is known as Number 1.  He is the only black dog in the group.  The others are apparently all white.  So it would seem that I owe my rescue to Number One.

During dinner, the asst cruise director told us a wonderful story about Prince Albert.  Several years ago, the ACD was still primarily a singer / dancer and choreographer on another cruise.  One night in Monte Carlo, one of the other dancers went out for the evening to party.  The next day she announced that she had met Prince Albert in one of the bars and he had given her his cell phone number.  A few days later, the ship went into dry dock in Genoa, and while they were waiting for the ship to be ready; the six dancers went down to spend a few days in Nice.  Well, one afternoon the dancer announced that she had called Albert  and that he was coming to the hotel to pick her up.  The ACD pointed out that this was kind of a second class (aka cheap) hotel in Nice.  Well all six of the girls decided that they weren’t going to miss this, so they all went down to the lobby to wait for the Prince.  And sure enough, a little while later, this huge motorcade swept into the driveway of the hotel.  Two very large bodyguards in dark suits, and with earphones dangling from their ears came into the lobby.  There was also a nineteen year old desk clerk in the hotel lobby who by this time had gone white as a sheet.  As soon as the bodyguards finished checking out the lobby, they radioed the limo out front.  And sure enough, out of the limo steps Prince Albert himself, dressed in khaki pants, a tee shirt, and a jacket.  By this time, the hotel clerk was on the phone calling every other maid, bellboy and waiter in the hotel to tell them what was going on.   Albert came over, and sat down with the six dancers and chatted with them for quite a long time.  During the visit, more and more hotel employees started appearing behind curtains and in doorways to get a glimpse of royalty.  Our ACD said that Albert was charming and delightful, and after a fairly long visit; Albert and his date climbed into the limo and motorcade roared off to one of the clubs.  I love that story.

Today, Carole (from last night) and I decided to explore a little more of Monte Carlo.  She had checked at the tour desk this morning and had been told that getting a taxi on a Sunday was going to be rough, so that we would probably have to take the bus (YUCK!)  We had just walked out of the terminal and were ready to start hiking to the bus stop, when this taxi cab pulled up in front of us and stopped.  Carole said that he was probably waiting to pick up a group, but having nothing to loose I went up to him, asked if he was available to take us to the palace, and two minutes we were off in the supposedly non-existent taxi.  We got to the palace just in time for the changing of the guard.  It was a pretty impressive ceremony, with a full band and a line of dignitaries that were (I guess) the members of the Monaco Council.  And even though the Prince’s flag was flying above the palace, which means the Prince is in residence, he did not bother to come out and wave to the adoring crowd.

After the changing of the guard, we walked down to the Cathedral where the Prince (no not Albert) and the Princess are entombed.  Great, the church was locked!  What is it with Europeans and locked churches on Sunday?  As we walked around the side of the cathedral there was a large group of people who I believe were just coming out of the church service, even though it was almost one o’clock.  I suggested that perhaps that cathedral would be opening up soon, but Carol decided that was unlikely.  The streets around the palace are charming.  They remind me very much of the streets outside of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle in Disneyland.  Now I know you all thought I was going to say that they looked like the streets outside of Buckingham Palace; but honestly they look more like Disneyland.  Besides the last time I was at Buckingham Palace for the changing of the guards, one of the embassies near by (I believe the Iranian Embassy) was seized at gunpoint and the entire changing of the guard turned into a mass display of helicopters and military police units.  Not having seen the guards change before, I was quite impressed by the military and air power until someone pointed out that one of the embassies was being attacked.

Anyway, Carol and I and her trusty map wandered around the palace area, down past the Jacques Cousteau Aquarium and down through the gardens near the palace.  Carol’s map told her we would slowly wind down the hills of Monaco until we got to the harbor.  NOT TRUE.  The gardens came to an abrupt end, and the only other way to go (besides parasailing) was to climb some more damn steps.  So, we climbed and climbed and ended up where?  Yes, back in front of the Cathedral, which was at that very moment, opening their doors to the public.  The sealed doors earlier leads me to believe that the Prince may have attended the earlier service (or hopefully confession).  So, Carol and I went into the Cathedral, and then paid our respects at the tombs of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier.  By that time I was worn out, having scaled the hills of Monaco yesterday, so Carol and her map went off to explore the rest of Monaco, and I took the bus back to the ship, where I arrived in time for the charity presentation and possibly Princess Caroline.

Believe me, I will sleep well tonight!

DR Jose,

Send me your mailing address (I think I have it, but send it anyway to make sure), and I'll mail A CHRISTMAS TALE out to you tomorrow morning. I forgot to buy a turkey breast at the grocery store on Friday, so I'm heading to the store tomorrow morning to see if any are left, and the P.O. is next door, so I can put it in the mail then.

Merry Christmas (four weeks early)!

I will be working on A CHRISTMAS TALE today. Knowing nothing about it at all, I have to admit my interest is piqued. It IS long (2 1/2 hours), but hopefully, it'll be so engrossing I won't notice the length.

There is a second disc of bonus features, so I assume I won't get to them until tonight.

Jack, Anthony had a dream last night and I wondered if the Dream-O-Matic could shed some light on it.

A friend of his (an older gentleman of 81 years) died in August. Anthony dreamed he was having a nice phone conversation with him. It was clearly current time. As they were speaking Anthony had a call come in on Call Waiting. It was his cousin. He said to George "let me call you back, it's my cousin and I need to speak to her" As Anthony was switching to speak to his cousin he said to himself "I can't call George back, he died" Then Anthony woke up. He wants to know if the dream has any meaning. Addendum, just earlier this month we also lost a very dear and close friend (she lived in Nottingham, England) to bone cancer. It was very sad. We knew it was coming but it was quicker than we thought. We wanted to take a trip to see her one last time and now we can't. I think the two incidents are related. Anthony's not sure.

I really should not send email's at all when I'm upset, but I always forget that I'm upset and send it anyway.

I sent a : these are the facts email to the manager of the apt., bldg., at 4AM yesterday morning about my new neighbors.   I only stated facts, she responded in defense of herself and forwarded the email to her boss.

These days you have to be so careful with every word and how it's taken by the other reader. All I know is that yesterday afternoon, the neighbors yelled F------ B---- for about 5 minutes.  Wonder if they got an email from the manager or the management company.

Will I ever learn, not.

But, I did get a good nights sleep, without being forced awake at 3AM.

E-mails -

It used to drive me crazy - I know, not a long journey - at work when I would send a list of issues or questions - numbered, lettered, or bulleted - and the recipient would respond only to the first point and ignore all the others.

Grrrrrrrr!

I am constantly baffled by Constant Contact and the Kritzerland eBlasts.  We have just under 2000 names on the blast list - all these are people who've purchased from Kritzerland before.  We send out a blast.  And over 1000 of our 2000 people never even open it.  We're always at about 51% opens.  These aren't going to people's spam folders (we can see when that happens), and a few don't arrive because of "full" mailboxes and such - but the fact that people get a new release announcement (and I purposely keep the title out of the headline) and don't even open it is so weird to me.  How do they even know if they want it or not, and since all these folks have bought something from us, you'd think they'd at least want to see what the title is.  Go know.

DAW - Please please please don't take this the wrong way, but at work when people receive without warning a list of issues or questions - as you say, numbered, lettered, or bulleted - they tend to see it as extra work that the person is trying to deposit into their workload.  They feel a need to respond quickly to show they are not ignoring the email, especially if a higher-up is cc'd on it, and feel the ball has been passed back into the other person's court.

I had no idea you and DAW worked at the same place.   ;D :o

Then I watched A CHRISTMAS TALE. Like many holiday themed films, this one concerns a dysfunctional family where there are hidden feelings, secrets revealed, feelings bared, all over the course of four days (with a coda concerning the mother's health treatment taking place a week later).

Reminded me a bit of THE FAMILY STONE and HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, same kind of dramedy to the piece. I was very disappointed in the character of Sylvia who felt so betrayed by the men in her life, but I say you make your own bed and to blame others for your choices is juvenile. No woner the mother said she didn't like her early in the movie (I kept wondering why she'd feel that way until she began showing her true colors later in the movie.)

I started on the bonus features. The first is a 66 minute documentary on the selling of a family home which gave the director the idea for A CHRISTMAS TALE (some similar family interactions). I've only gotten 26 minutes in, but there only appears to be one more featurette and a couple of trailers, so I should have no trouble finishing this up today.

I saw Richard Gere and the original Broadway cast.  I haven't seen the film, but i think it's a play actors like because it has great roles. Do I think it's a good play? No. I think it's a success with gay audiences because of its subject and with actors because of the roles.  I think it's a false play because the leading character is a survivor and spends the whole play doing everything to survive. He'd come out of that camp as a survivor not a corpse who finds love in a concentration camp and dies for it. The original production had a great cast and it was amazing but I still don't think it's a  good play.

I finished all of the bonus features for A CHRISTMAS TALE. Truth to tell, there weren't many for a Criterion two disc release. If the movie hadn't been so long, they could have gotten all of this on one disc.

The other major bonus feature was a 36-minute interview with the director and two of the movie's stars talking about making the film and the two actors talking about what it's like working for the director.

There was also the original trailer and the American release trailer.

I followed this with this week's GHOST WHISPERER. The episode was very kid-centric this week, and since I'm not a fan of Melinda's five year old son, the show didn't delight me. The parents were very touching, and the fear Melinda and Jim had when Aiden was missing was wonderfully acted. I hope they keep Aiden on the back burner for much of the season. I'm already tired of him.

Back from Nine at four and then dinner with Alet.  I shall have much to say about Nine at four, but for now let me just say that today at the DGA was madness.  The idiots booked the theater to SAG (something I wish they would NEVER do - let SAG go find somewhere else to screen films) - today they screened Inglorious Bastards and Brad Pitt and other cast members were there for a Q&A.  Heaven forbid they should have started at noon so they could actually clear the parking lot and theater in time, but that was seemingly beyond their comprehension.  Therefore when I arrived one hour and five minutes before OUR screening, the parking lot was full and everyone had to scramble to other lots and parking spaces - it's OUR union, OUR screening room, and frankly, it's OUR building and if anyone should have been scrounging it's SAG.  Outrageous.  Then there was already a long line for Nine.  A LINE for Nine - this isn't a movie theater it's a DGA screening facility for directors and their families - and yet, I saw several people I know who are not directors nor are family to directors - they'd simply got someone to lend them their card - not supposed to be allowed, and if they found out they could confiscate said card and fine the member.   Then the SAG Q&A ran long, so it was craziness.  They finally started letting us in around three-forty.  Luckily, the line at the DGA isn't dense and I wasn't hugely far back, so even though it looked like a really long line, there were probably only sixty people ahead of me, and when I got in the theater my usual seat was there and it was pretty empty.  Twenty minutes later there wasn't a seat to be had.  I had to run after the screening, but I heard Rob was personable and interesting after.

I am therefore going to continue in my assumption that this had nothing to do with my absolutely hilarious joke.  (Not that one).

Thank you for referring to it as a joke.  Your generosity is duly noted.  :)

I guess I can say it - i commented that in my office when we get emails with lots of questions, we quickly answer the easy ones so that we don't look like we're ignoring the email, but then the other question somehow get ignored because the recipient doesn't want to take on the extra workload.

This response apparently caused offense.

The actual words were:  (I guess I shouldn't have deleted them before after all)

Please please please don't take this the wrong way, but at work when people receive without warning a list of issues or questions - as you say, numbered, lettered, or bulleted - they tend to see it as extra work that the person is trying to deposit into their workload.  They feel a need to respond quickly to show they are not ignoring the email, especially if a higher-up is cc'd on it, and feel the ball has been passed back into the other person's court.

I saw that. I didn't think it was intended as an insult in any way.  Especially when it was followed by the suggestion of sending each question in an email.   But, I can also see how it may have been misunderstood and taken personally,

Hope you guys work it out.

Well... Maybe...

Earlier this afternoon, I started to take care of some cleaning and reorganizing of my room.  And, wonder or wonders, I actually started to go through some of my "boxes-o-stuff" - some of which had not been opened in years.  I didn't go through all the boxes, but I did make set some aside to go through later.  I noticed there was one box filled only with mugs.  There were 16 mugs in that one.  And then I went ahead and decided to go through another box marked "Knick-Knacks", and, sure enough there plenty of knick-knacks* in there, along with six more mugs.

I went ahead and washed all of them and set them on my dinner table.  Most of them were from shows (see above pic), but I also had a couple from the Art Institute of Chicago, various theatres, Duke University, WETA (the PBC station in DC), Walt Disney World (from their 25th Anniversary), etc., etc...

Now here's the "catch": I hardly ever drink coffee at home.  So...

DR George - or any other DR - If you'd like a mug, well... I guess we could work some sort of deal out. ;)

*Besides the mugs in the "knick-knacks" box there were also:

-Assorted scented votive candles
-Assorted votive candle holders
-Various incense sticks and cones from L'Occitane (?)
-A couple of other scented candles
-A collection of small, Disney character plush dolls - which have magnets in their "paws" and "feet".
-Some small glass "holders" I obviously bought since they were on clearance sale somewhere.
-A set of floating candles in the shape of a hula dancer. -I believe those were leftover Opening Night favors from when I did South Pacific at Arena Stage.

In any case... I believe I'll be taking a box-o-stuff down to Housing Works (http://www.housingworks.org/) this week.  -And most likely next week too.

Did DR DAW take your "C"? ;)

I have a Sweeney Todd poster from the Sondheim Celebration signed by the whole cast, and I believe I managed to get Mr. Sondheim's scribble somewhere on there too.

The other posters are signed "to a degree".  I only really cared about Sweeney since that was the show I worked on full-time.  Additionally, the casts for all the shows that summer signed a TON of posters and other merchandise, and I felt bad trying to track everyone down... Unlike some people who were also involved with the Sondheim Celebration.  -Just sayin'.

I am still laughing at DR LAURA's link from yesterday - The Christmas Can Can.

I also like their version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" - which, I believe, was mentioned on this here site last year.

And they have a new Christmas album out this year: Christmas Cheers (http://www.amazon.com/Christmas-Cheers-Straight-No-Chaser/dp/B001TRDPB4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1258961037&sr=1-1)

After I had finished Stage One of "The Big Clean", I headed uptown to join my friend, Bradley, for dinner.  He's heading down to North Carolina for the holiday, but still wanted to make a turkey of his own, so he made one tonight.  Almost.

He was hoping to have his early Thanksgiving dinner done by 7:30, but since the turkey - all 14 pounds of it - did not get put in the oven until 7:00, well...

So, while the turkey cooked away in his oven, we headed on up to the Indian Road Café (http://www.indianroadcafe.com/Welcome.html) where we both had some very good food for dinner.  I particularly liked tonight's selection on their housemade "Pickled Vegetable Plate": watermelon rind, butternut squash, bread & buttter pickles, carrots and mustard seeds(!).

By the time we got back from dinner, the turkey was perfectly done.  So... He sent me home with some a big bag of "fresh leftovers": turkey, cornbread-sausage dressing, half a loaf of sourdough bread, and a couple of clementines.  *And it took a whole lot of restraint not to eat all the turkey on the subway ride back to my place.  Sooooo good!

And...

While we were having dinner, we were discussing our plans for Thanksgiving.  I mentioned that I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it down to Richmond due to my work schedule on Wednesday.  He mentioned that he wasn't really looking forward to the drive down to Asheville, NC... DING!  Well...

Richmond happens to be the half-way point between New York City and Asheville, NC.  So...

We're going to brave the traffic on Wednesday night.  He'll drop me off at my parents' house.  -And since my friend, Mike, is a manager at the Richmond Marriott, I was able to work out a "Friends & Family" rate for Bradley, so he'll stay in Richmond Wednesday night, and then continue his trek down to Asheville on Thanksgiving morning.  Then, he'll start the trek back north on Friday night, stay in Richmond once again, and then I'll join him for the trip back up to NYC on Saturday morning.

HOO and RAY!!

:)
