Title: A CASABA MELON

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very melon-like, and not it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're eating a cowsaba melon.

Well, dear friends -- Hainsies and Kimlets, all -- I am THUNDERSTRUCK.

Yes, you read it correctly.

THUNDERSTRUCK!

I'm certain a few of you might suspect why, but I'll tell you.  I've been "playing", mind you -- playing with a new electronic toy.  To wit, I've been experimenting with my new HD DVD PLAYER.

I must tell you.....yes, I must.....that I've truly been enjoying my DVD collection the past three months.  Seeing these movies on a plasma 37-inch HD TV has been northing short of amazing and revelatory.  I've seen much-loved movies in a new fresh way...catching details never before suspected and enjoying the vibrancy of colors and composition that eluded me on my valiant, steadfast Sony 19-inch.

And I must confess I was "told" that these same DVDs, if played through a high-end high-def DVD player -- be it Blu-Ray or HD DVD -- would be an even more stunning experience.  This, of course, would be dependent upon the quality of the standard DVD.

I was hopeful...and I was willing to take a chance.

I wasn't, though, prepared for how thunderstruck -- yes, THUNDERSTRUCK -- I would be at the breathtakingly sharp, nearly three-dimensional effects I would gain.

My first DVD was nothing I'd seen before -- a Miss Marple (Geraldine McEwan) mystery called "The Sittaford Mystery."  WOW! These Marples are anamorphic and are crisp, clean and wonderful   In my limited experience, only the over-the-air HD broadcasts of "Ugly Betty" and "Lost" ever matched the depth of the image I experienced due to the increased resolution and dynamic sharpness this HD DVD player provided.

I then turned to something I love -- something I've raved about here and other places -- something I'd know was different IF it were different.

I turned to "South Pacific".

Oh.

My.

God.

The visual dynamics are extraordinary.  New depth, new detail, new definition....unbelieveable.

I don't care what format any of you may choose.  I URGE you, if you can at all upgrade your DVD viewing by acquiring one of the newer, lower-priced high-definition players, to take the plunge and experience a major HIGH in the home cinema experience.

It's half past midnight and I'm all atingle.  I could stay up all night and watch a couple of more films, I could.

But I won't.  I'm going to have to settle down, sleep a bit and take things at a leisurely pace.

And that ain't easy when you've been THUNDERSTRUCK....again!

And how sad it is to be all alone on the forum at such a time....when I'm all pumped up and ready to frenzy before falling into bed.

I supposed I could frenzy solo, but if I took the time to do that, I could be watching something else again (for the first time)....like "Hello, Dolly!"  Or "Daddy Long Legs"!  Or "The King and I" (Oh!  MY!)  Or "West Side Story"...or on and on and on.

Well, that's it for now.

I'll simply allow my mind to excogitate over these new thrilling experiences.

I shall probably dream in high def tonight.

Be very glad you don't live close enough to visit and be stunned/amazed and envious!!!

Or to check out my TV and HD-DVD player.

DR Cillaliz I was very interested in your take on the Paris Hilton affair.  I had no idea until yesterday (i think i read it somewhere else in addition to what you wrote) that a regular Jane would not have gotten the same sentence.  I'm sure most people are under the assumption that the 20+ days was a light sentence.  So your insight was very interesting.

U 2, DR TOMovOZ!

I am off to work.

Yes interesting to read DR CILLA LIZ's take on the dumb hotel.  Although I don't like her at all - she may be in the middle of a power struggle between a judge and a sheriff.  It's a gunfight at the OK Corral.

Good morning, all!  Oy! It was another night of lousy sleep: since Wednesday this lease situation has been a damned yoyo, I'm cranky, and I'm tired of the constant it's-on-it's-off-it's-on . . .

Today I should be heading to the 42nd Street Library to use the microfilm for the New York Telegram, January 10, 1904, to read the remainder of the article on backstage work during a performance of BABES IN TOYLAND, since the bottom of the copy in publicist Townsend Walsh's scrapbook has crumbled into dust.  It's a fascinating article about the 60+ stagehands, electricians, etc. running the performance, and it has a great drawing of a view from the flies as Mabel Barrison sings "I Can't Do the Sum" near the apron so the reader can see the crew setting up the Spider's Forest behind the Garden Wall set.  The 12 Piper Children who perform the number with Miss Barrison each have their own stepladder behind the set to climb onto the garden wall.

The article details every scene change and the amount of time needed to accomplish it; for instance the Master Toymaker's castle(Act Two Scene Four), which is the finale of Act Two, takes 10 minutes to assemble during Act Two Scene Three and collapses and falls apart during a volcanic eruption covering the stage with lava, steam, and smoke in less than three minutes!

That's my exciting life.  Instead of heading to 42nd Street today, I think I shall stay here and transcribe all the notes I've been taking.

Tonight, I have a birthday party on the East Side at Roosevelt University.  If DR Jose doesn't play A CHORUS LINE tonight, I believe he's my date.

TOD - a rummy game called Liverpool; also Canasta, which I used to play for hours on end with my grandmother.  My parents and I used to play Spite and Malice.  Haven't played any of these games in a very long time.

With all this time on my hands, I've had a very busy morning already. After I read the newspaper, I went out and mowed my front lawn. Even though it was only 7:45, the air was already quite warm. (And for those of you who think it was thoughtless of me to mow the grass at such an early hour, in my defense, I do have an electric lawnmower which is very quiet.)

Next, I sat down and FORCED myself to watch the remaining special features on the WR: MYSTERIES OF THE ORGANISM DVD. There was a semi-comic autobiographical film made by the director who, at one point, visited Hollywood for an AFI film festival that was showing his film SWEET MOVIE and in the audience was a pot bellied pig.

DR Ron, I was thrilled to read of your first experiences with an upconversion player. If I could make a suggestion, watch GYPSY as soon as you can. It's one of the sharpest, most colorful standard definition DVDs I have, and it will look really stunning upconverted.

And, of course, once you start watching REAL HD-DVDs, you'll see an even sharper and clearer image (if the film has a dynamite transfer). As usual, poor source material will not do major improvements to the image you see. (I learned this with TERMINATOR 2. The high def disc was barely sharper than the SD-DVD.)

This afternoon, I'll be watching another episode of THE CLOSER, another ANGEL episode, and I still have STUDIO 60 from Thursday night to watch.

I also would like to revisit ELIZABETH with Cate Blanchette very soon. Reading the book on Henry VIII and his court has made to curious to see that movie again.
Title: Re:A CASABA MELON
Post by: Matt H. on June 09, 2007, 07:24:42 AM
One more word about upconversion, it really only works if your TV has an HDMI or DVI jack. All new TVs being produced now have at least one HDMI input (most have more than one), and new versions of other hardware like DVD players, cable boxes, satellite dish receivers are likewise coming with these connections since they provide a pure digital connection from source to source.

TOD:  Never been much of a card player.  I remember as a family we used to play a great deal of casnasta at one time.  I now have no memory of how to play the game at all.  I used to enjoy a friendly evening of poker until it suddenly became television  fare and the only game that seems to be played anymore is Texas Hold'em.  What happen to five and seven card draw and stud and Tennessee Walker, and Night Baseball and a whole slew of other variations on the game?

I do play a lot of internet solitaire.

His films of the early 1970s, however, are too avant garde for my taste.

I've told this story before, but when I was in college, hearts was THE game. We'd spend entire weekends playing, sending out for food, and just playing well into the night and then picking up the game the next day.

My first partner and I had a "hearts club" for several years and every Tuesday night was cards night.

TOD: Old Maid and a card game called "Authors". We played these constantly on camping trips and during our moves. "Authors" was basically the same as "Go Fish". So we learned the titles and authors of a lot of classic books by Tennyson, Alcott, Dickens, Scott, etc. and actually edned up reading quite a few of them, too.

When I got to High School we played "hearts" a lot. And my Gaga and I played "Spite and Malice". Those were my favorite times, sitting down in the evenings at her kitchen table and playing cards with her.

Today are auditions for Annie, Get Your Gun  It will be interesting.  It's an odd show in the sense that no one really does it much.  A theatre gorup in a 30 mile radius did it last year.  While it shouldn't affect us, I can't imagine the "gypsy's" in the area won't want to do this show two years in a row.  Last night at Beauty and the Beast rehearsal, I was trying to talk some of our younger cast members into auditioning.  Reactions were usually "Yuck, that's an old show" I reminded them that they should be well rounded perfromers and get into some of the classics.  In any case it should be an interesting day.

Good Morning!

I'm up, I'm up... And I think I slept well... Well, I at least feel rested, but the last few hours of my sleep were spent looking at the clock every five to ten minutes wondering if I should not be sleeping in today. ???

I had seriously considered heading out for a run, but since I could already feel the heat coming in through the windows.... However, if I had gotten out of bed at 6:30 when I first woke up (again?!?!?), I would have ran then.  But since I didn't really fall asleep until around 3:00... I didn't think going for a run after just three or so hours of sleep would have been a good thing.  -And since I'm "feeling" the efforts of the past two days, I believe a day of rest would also be a good thing, especially since I just got "motivated" again.  ;)

I've been wondering about the whole "mob mentality" aspect of this case - especially in regards to how the media has been covering this whole, stupid situation.  Suppose Ms. Hilton's case had been covered quietly, even ignored by the mainstream media, would a "mob mentality" come into the picture?

I do have to say the pics of her crying in the car did induce some schadenfreude in me yesterday, but I also had to wonder just how much of those tears were caused by all the photographers and news people hounding her during that very private moment.  Alas, she's chosen to live her life very much in the public eye, and, sadly(?), I guess she couldn't even have a non-public moment when she wanted one.

While her media coverage doesn't match up to her well-known daughter, Kathy Hilton is not alien to the limelight. She was a guest star on "Happy Days" in 1977 and appeared on "The Rockford Files" in '78.

It is Kathy who has made Paris what she is today, pushing her daughter into the spotlight from the start, firm that her eldest child would attain the megastar standing she had never managed.

Kathy carefully trained Paris and her younger sister Nicky for a life of reputation and fame.

"Kathy was absolutely pushy, arrogant, condescending and presumptuous and Paris picked that up from her. The spotlight always had to be on Kathy. It was always, 'Do you know who I am?'" said Peggy Cusack Yakovlev, a former personal assistant to Kathy's husband Rick's uncle, Eric Hilton.

Kathy initiated her daughters into the gracious society of celebrities, guiding Paris through her first appearance as a child model at charity events before making her sign Donald Trump's modelling agency at 19.

"Kathy wanted to expose her girls to the social and nightlife world in Manhattan. She wanted her girls to be in the limelight - and she certainly accomplished that," Gini Tangalakis, the mother of an old schoolfriend of Paris's sister Nicky, said.

Kathy supported Paris even during her most infamous and disreputable controversies, claiming that her daughter could do nothing wrong.

When a homemade sex tape called "One Night in Paris" surfaced on the Internet, Hilton characterized her daughter as a victim.

Now, as Paris is set for the prison term, Kathy is fiercely defending her first-born.

"She's eccentric, she's herself and she never hurts anybody. It upsets me that she gets taken advantage of, but I think we've all learned to deal with it. You know what she is really like. She is like Bambi. She is like a little deer," Kathy said.

Hearts - a racist game - beware the Black Bitch!

Canasta - Step One - Buy a tray!

If it's double-deck, do daily exercises to increase palm strength.
Canvas the neighborhood for widows who do not play Bingo - they are candidates for your Canasta Party; Canasta must always be accompanied by various and sundried foodstuffs.

Pinochle - Never ask "What Would Jesus Do ?"

Bridge -  Frequent incantations to Satan help; cannibalism is common.

Tyson Recalls 40,000 Pounds of Ground Beef Amid E. Coli Scare
Saturday , June 09, 2007

SPRINGDALE, Ark. —

Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. on Friday recalled more than 40,000 pounds of ground beef shipped to Wal-Mart stores in 12 states after samples tested at a Sherman, Texas, plant showed signs of E. coli contamination.

No illnesses had been reported. Springdale-based Tyson Foods Inc. said the recall is not related to contaminated ground beef distributed by California-based United Food Group LLC.

The recalled products were sent to Wal-Mart stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas, Tyson said.

Wal-Mart has removed the products from its meat cases and is destroying the recalled ground beef still in its possession, officials said.

Tyson recalled 40,440 pounds of ground beef, all of which had sell-by dates of June 13. The ground beef was sold in prepackaged trays that were placed directly into the meat case.

I would think that "A Casaba Melon" would be listed before "Aardvarks: The Musical".  Hmm...  Where's my MLA Stylebook?  -Would that even be covered in there?

When I went to library science graduate school, back in the pre-computer age, we had to learn card filing rules.  Accordingly, the articles (a, an, the) should be dropped, but since the NYTimes chooses not to drop them, the rule "Nothing before something" would apply.  So, Jose is correct here.

LA TIMES GETS VENGEFUL (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-paris-punishments-pg,1,2925486.photogallery?coll=la-headlines-entnews&index=1)

Quote
In the spirit of appropriate retribution, here are 10 punishments more fitting to her multi-year crime spree against entertainment consumers:

1. Hilton will be forced to spend 45 days with her new court appointed BFF with whom she'll be wearing matching outfits and friendship bracelets: Melinda Doolittle.

2. Hilton will be banned from shopping at Whole Foods and Bristol Farms for 45 days. Instead, all food will be bought at Jon's and Food 4 Less where only generic brands may be purchased. No cupcakes!

3. For the next 45 days Hilton must wear a sack over her head when leaving the house. No photos ever. Period.

4. Instead of being locked away where the public can’t taunt her, Hilton will instead be forced to pick up trash on the side of the road, scrub toilets (a la Naomi Campbell) and/or perform doggie duty for all attendees at the Mulholland pooch park.

5. Hilton will no longer be allowed to use the first name Paris. The public will address her as Sarah, Anne or Mildred Hilton.

6. Hilton will be banished to her room where she must listen to her own self-titled album “Paris” on repeat and watch “House of Wax” on loop.

7. The only clubs Hilton will be authorized to attend are book clubs. And not Lady O's or Adrian Grenier’s. Perhaps a book club at a community rec center in, say, Tarzana?

8. For 45 days all of Hilton’s wardrobe will be furnished by Wal-Mart.

9. Hilton must undergo a victim reconciliation program where she is forced to listen to Shana Moakler describe how she’s been affected by the heiress’s crimes.

10. Judge Michael T. Sauer zaps the world with one of those forget-o-rays and nobody remembers that a Paris Hilton ever existed. The worst punishment of all.

Since I still have 4 dollars worth of tickets, I will be going back. I also need to see how I'm doing on the silent auctions and buy some raffle tickets.   This is one of the major fund raisers for Holy Trinity and they are a great bunch, so I don't mind leaving some money there every year.

I bought some homemade soap that says "Holy Trinity Soap, it won't wash away your sins, but your skin will feel Heavenly"

And poor Kitty ran out the front door much to Brenda's distress. After two years, she's still calling Kitty "he" even after he/she gave birth! I LOVE THIS SHOW!

Then, I put back MY LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND and picked up where I left off yesterday with it. (One of the fabulous things about my upconversion player is that it automatically remembers the stopping points on discs after you've taken them out of the player and put something else in and gone back to the original disc a day or two later. It always starts right where you left off no matter how many other discs have been played in between.)

Stargate SG-1 had one of the funniest throw-away lines in a long time:

A character has been given tickets to a show:
"It's 'The Virginia Dialogues' - I don't know anything about it."

Needless to say, the closing scene with the hulking character Teal'c hunkering down during the opening scene clarified the issue.

I said to Keith, you would have preferred if it was Weiler, he laughed & said yes.  The only other character we would not want to loose is McKay.  And Beckett and McKay were good together.

Season 3 changed the cast lineup again. Paul McGillion's Dr. Carson Beckett was killed in episode 17, "Sunday", (though only temporarily, it appears, as Joe Mallozzi stated on April 9, 2007 that he will be bringing Beckett back, alive and well, in a 2-part episode in season 4).

DerBrucer, first Mallozzi said he wasn't killing Beckett off & still did so in spite of an influx of protests from fans.  From what I have read Paul McGillion has moved to L.A. & doesn't know he will be returning to the show.

Reading the interviews with McGillion, he seems to be as caring and generous a person as Beckett.

You could, of course, get a sheep or two.  Aside from the occasional bleating, they are very quiet, trim the yard nicely, and also provide cheap fertilizer.

And they could provide you with the raw material for a new hobby - knitting.  (Something you could do while watching television, btw - my mother was an expert at it.)

Unless you also do kitchen duty, then:

You would not look good in the former.

Gee, I wonder...

He lives and works in NYC.  He was born in the Pacific Northwest (thus Seattle/Portland).  He's got two new shops running in Las Vegas.  And everyone loves New Orleans, particularly after Katrina.

That leaves Philly.  Weird, man, just weird.

Past time I should be getting dinner on the table.  Nothing special.  Hamburgers.  Fries.  Onion rings.

And gazpacho.  With crab for a garnish.

DH Richard and I stepped out a while ago for Penn Station sandwiches and I forgot to log out from here.  We ended up also going to Target, Staples, and Kroger - do we know how to partay on a Saturday night or what?

I have returned from George DeMarco's 50th birthday partay, and a swell time it was!  I enjoyed our DR Jose's company as always, and I hope he had a good time.  I saw several folks from the Singing Nun show, all of whom I've missed a lot, met some new friends of George and his partner andy Monroe, and had a lto of fn sampling the wonderful assortment of food.  I'm going to watch the last episode on disc 5 of POPULAR and pass out.

Speaking of POPULAR, how did a show this demented, surreal, and brilliant last two seasons?  I can't believe the dimwits who schedule most viewing didn't freak out out after two episodes and shut it down.  I mean, BEVERLY HILLS 90210 it ain't, and that nonsense ran forever.

The food at the festival includes:
Athenian Chicken breast,
Dolmathes - grape vine leaves stuffed with a ground beef and rice mixture
Greek Salad
Gyros
Pastitsio - the greek lasagna
Souvlaki with Pita bread - a tender shish kabob of marinated beef grilled
Spanakopita (one of my favorites) - Spinach and feta cheese pie baked in a buttery pyyllo dough

Baklava - ground nuts and spices, layered with buttered phyllo and drenched in honey syrup
Baklava Sundae - Large scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with crumbled baklava and honey glazing
Kataifi - shredded phyllo with nuts soaked in honey syrup
Koulouria - a rich butter cookie
Kourabiethes - rich almond butter cookie sprinkled with powdered sugar
Loukoumades - the Greek "honey puff" served warm and drizzled with honey and cinnamon
Melomakarona - spiced nut cookie dipped in honey
Thiples - light fried dough that's sweetened with honey

Greek Wines - including a dry white retsina, a mild rose Roditis, red and white Demestica and Mavrodaphne and more
Ouzo, Greek beer, Greek coffee and of course soft drinks

The food there sound delicious!

I am home from the Fest OPA!!!  This year I didn't drink Ouzo, but did have Vergina http://www.verginabeer.com/english/index2_en.html (http://www.verginabeer.com/english/index2_en.html) Mighty tasty beer, actually.  This year I got in line and learned the Greek line dance.. whew! Those songs must be about 10 minutes long, but it was fun.  I also won a silent auction (is it still winning when you pay) anyway it was a great bath set of dead sea salts, soap, body butter an incredible pewter tray that's big enough to use as a serving tray (It's sort of shaped like the triangle thingies on the Star Trek uniforms) and a huge bath towel.   After all that dancing, I'm ready for a bath with the dead sea salts...

Well, I watched (or rather suffered and endured) SWEET MOVIE. I never saw THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE, OR HER LOVER, but I can't imagine it contained any more repugnant imagery than this movie contained. I'm no prude, but I was grossed out, turned off, and appalled.

This movie was not made for the likes of me.

I did watch an interview with the director (conducted by critic Peter Cowie), and I also watched an appreciation of the film by film scholar Dina Iordanova. Neither made it any more palatable to me.

To get the SOUR taste of SWEET MOVIE out of my head, I put in the Martin and Lewis movie bk talked about the other day - ARTISTS AND MODELS. Boy, does this have lush Technicolor! Fox should take a look at these Paramount Technicolor movies before they master any more of their Technicolor confections for DVD.

I concluded my evening with more of LIFE WITH JUDY GARLAND. I only got about 20 more minutes watched - from Carnegie Hall to her first encounter with Mark Herron. (The actor who played Mark was certainly gorgeous.)

I got my first big order from Deep Discount today, so I should have no trouble finding DVDs to watch over the next couple of weeks. (The Martin & Lewis set was one of those in the order.)

Good Evening!

I indeed have a good time at the party with DR elmore, and it turned out I knew a couple of the people there too.  And I also met a kindred spirit: She was a friend of the birthday boy and his partner, and she was in charge of the desserts.  It turns out, she has a knack for finding new bakeries and other places to get treats and sweets.  We traded notes.  :)

And the song that the partner wrote for his boyfriend's 50th birthday was truly beautiful and touching.  And he gave out CDs of the song too as party favors!

And the food was very good too, and there was lots of it.  Alas, I believe I had one cookie too many after the cupcakes, candy and carrot cake I had consumed.  But those were some good cookies, cupcakes (from Tribeca Treats), candy and carrot cake.  :)

DR Cillaliz - That Greek Festival sounds great!  I used to love going to the one in Richmond - which always seemed to fall on the hottest and most humid weekend of the summer.  But the food!  And they always had some sort of deal on bottles of Greek wine if you bought them with your meal.  *And I know what you mean about that ouzo too.  ;)
