Title: THE SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS
Post by: bk on July 16, 2006, 01:00:36 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a sweet smell or some sort of smell, and now it is time for you to post until the smelly cows come home.

You had a bacon cheeseburger, slaw, and coconut cream pie with whipped cream?  All of that in a pie??  Who do you think you are, Joey Tribiani??

;)

(anyone know the specific reference?)

It was in the more BRUMAL days of November that Chuck's LUMBAR muscles would start to ache, a condition that would last until late March.

Good morning, all!  I am gearing up for several days of madness, beginning with Dylan's move this afternoon.  I had a wonderful meeting yesterday with Andy Monroe, composer and lyricist for THE TRAGIC AND HORRIBLE LIFE OF THE SINGING NUN, and I will definitely be involved with it.  The festival is also doing THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER, which is near and dear to my (and BK's) heart, and I've got my fingers crossed that both shows get picked up for something grand.

This morning, I am off to Toyland.

DH Richard will be home this afternoon from his week in Wisconsin . :D

I am intrigued and fascinated and reticient about THE TRAGIC AND HORRIBLE LIFE OF THE SINGING NUN....

Wow!  A great Courts Show AND a terrific Cabaret night!  Saturday was BKDAY in Southern California.  Congratulations!  As Miss Elizabeth Taylor said about everyone who shunned her when she married Eddie Fisher, and then fawned when she won the Oscar for BUTTERFIELD 8:  "There is no deodorant like success!"

Working today at the World of Wisdom....I hope I am not book continuously for six hours, but time will tell.

Will work on the Unseemly Trivia Contest when I get home.

I ordered THE LOVED ONE and HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING yesterday....and of course GRAND PRIX on Friday, so hopefully they will all be here sooner or later.

Yesterday I also got EIGHT BELOW about the dogs left to fend for themselves in the Antarctic....  Watched about half of it...I liked it.

Oy!  Would that I could, DR Elmore!  The other day, when I checked out a book titled 31 Days (about the first month of the Ford presidency), the young man behind the desk asked if that's when I was retiring.  And I said, "Don't I wish!"

Back for a tick.

LOL....sounds like just MY kind of show, DRELMORE.

Hi DR GINNY - it is terrible here as well....the heat/humidity that is.

Hopefully the A/C at the store is functioning properly.

DR MATTH - I would like to take you up on your offer to copy the copy of YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE I sent you.  That would be GREAT.  You can put it on a DVR or whatever....VHS would be fine as well.

When you can, let me know when it's ready and I'll send you my address....and make you something you may not have....  although I am not sure what that would be as yet....LOL.

Good morning!

We got some thunder in my neighborhood last night, but the rain passed me by completely. Not so with other sections of the county. I read in the newspaper this morning that 6,000 folks were without power last night after a storm moved through here. I got nothing; my yard is as brown as can be, but I'm not complaining. Brown yard = no mowing!

In the midst of a real heat wave here with no rain even in the forecast now and soaring temperatures throughout the week.

I'll start looking for it today. Since you made it for me, and I didn't make it myself, I didn't put a code number on it (don't ask; it's my filing system for homemade videotapes) and now I must find where I stored it. Be patient with me.

I'm looking forward to my Joan Crawford festival this afternoon. DANCING LADY will be first, and then A WOMAN'S FACE on laserdisc, I think. That should take me through the afternoon.

I'll watch TOO MANY GIRLS tonight since my TV shows don't start until 9 p.m.

I think we may have lost one of the bird babies - only see two in the nest now, and noticed that what looks like a tiny bird body lying on the ground close to the garage.  Is that something mommy bird would have done - taken a dead baby bird out of the nest and dropped it on the ground?  Or, I could be wrong and it might not be a baby bird on the ground (it's really a tiny thing and there are lots of little plant thingees all over the ground).  The two that I can still see in the nest seem healthy and mommy is feeding them often and they're singing up a storm.

Today was not one of my favorite days at work.

For example, there was the elderly lady who was quite insistant that she had handed me a fifty, and I had only given her change for a twenty.  Fortunately, this took place close to my break, so Larry-the-assistant-floor-manager was able to audit my register's cash pan without having to close me down.  And no, the elderly lady was mistaken, she had not given me a fifty.  Still, I felt sorry for her, even though it meant that I hadn't made a mistake.

Later, I spent something like forty-five minutes repairing the coupon printer.  The paper had somehow wrapped around the platen, which for that printer is really small.  The one person in the store who had experience in this kind of printer repair was busy in the office, and couldn't be bothered to help, so it was between myself and Larry-the-assistant-floor-manager to figure out what needed to be done.  Yes, we got it fixed.  Really, I'm the one who figured out what had to be done, and then made sure Larry-the-assitant-floor-manager and Dixie-the-floor-manager knew what it was I had figured (so they'll know what to do should the same problem come up again).

No disasters, just aggrivating.

Thank the Lordy for my meds!   :-\

This sounds cruel, but as the little birdies grow, sacrificing one so Mommy can feed the rest of her brood is quite common.

Just think of this next time you meet a beseiged mother of triplets.  Who is smarter, the mother bird or the mother human?

Or any DRs in other time zones who may have already recorded it...

I amy VERY patient, DR MATTH....just when you can.

One of my favorite things in TOO MANY GIRLS is Mr Van Johnson as one of the chorus boys, dancing up a storm with no idea of the stardom ahead for him.   And of course Lucy in some of the BIG numbers lost in the crowd and dancing as best she can - but usually a beat behind....not having done the numbers on Broadway.

Desi shines and must have been SOMETHING in concert and onstage....no wonder Lucy fell for him.

DR Jrand, I found the video of HAWKE with very little effort. (I'm so proud of myself for putting it somewhere logical!)

At any rate, I'll get to work on the dubbing at some point today and should have it ready to go in a day or two (could be ready tomorrow, but I don't want to make any promises until I get it on disc. Things can always go wrong, and it IS a long movie)

Next came DANCING LADY. Joan actually has some dancing talent, but someone should have been kind and told her that she should not watch her feet when she dances. Anyway, this old film has been given a nice transfer. Nelson's Eddy one brief song near the end does not show him to best advantage, however. Good lord, it's a miracle MGM kept him under contract.

Then I pulled something of a surprise on myself. As I took out the laserdisc boxed set that contained several Joan Crawford movies (with the intention of watching A WOMAN'S FACE), I noticed that the box also contained WHEN LADIES MEET which I had never watched before. What a cast! In addition to Crawford, there are Robert Taylor, Greer Garson, Spring Byington, Herbert Marshall, and it's a romanbtic comedy. I only had time to watch the first side of the alserdisc (about 50 minutes or so), but I'll finish it later today.

When I got to my office, I did a little research since I knew nothing about this movie. Who knew it was a remake of an earlier 30s comedy that starred Myrna Loy? Watching this, I imagined it was an original screenplay written for Hepburn and Tracy and turned down by them so Crawford and Taylor stepped into it. But nothing of the kind. Looks like it was meant for the stars who played it and as another step for Garson on her road to being MGM's top female star.

My former intern Dylan has now moved out.  I am in the midst of reorganizing the apartment:  the laundry is in, the bathroom cleaned and mopped, and my living space reorganized in case DR MBarnum decides to invade NYC in October.

I have to say that, while I appreciated Dylan's being around for the three weeks I was away, I'm not sorry he's gone.  Some people learn New York is not the place they're meant to be, and Dylan learned that by the end of June.  Unfortunately, he neither used his time here constructively nor financially to his advantage, and I got burned.  I wish him well, but I cannot help him achieve that.

At least now I can drag out the VCR again!

I'm thinking about the possibilities of a New York Based sitcom -  all the NY Hainsies and/or Kimlets dwelling in the same apartment block with "guests" appearing every now and again from the NW, West, Midwest etc. Perhaps even an overseas visitor.  Even room there for the just passing through and sometimes posters - new and old.  How is Jason I wonder.

Perhaps even a local eatery/coffee/bar establishment.

A mixture of Queer as Folk and Friends I guess.

Hello all.  We've had a full weekend thus far.  Started yesterday by meeting my friend who was in town for a training conference for lunch and a visit to the flea market.  Came home rest for a while and then went out to dinner with Rodzinski's sis.  We then headed over to a karaoke bar where we were joined by DR Jose and some other friends.  It was a late night.

This morning I got up to bid my friend farewell before he headed back to Boston.  Then went back to sleep until noon when we all got up to head over to Jose's for brunch.  All I have to say is the man can cook!  After gorging ourselves on biscuits and gravy and cheesy hashbrown casserole, we gorged ourselves on reality tv shows from last week.  A lovely time was had by all.

Now we're back at home resting.

Back from the show - what IS going on here today?  Let's get some postin' goin' on because I do NOT want a new all-time low just because I wasn't here to whip everyone into a lather.  Let's get some frenzies goin' on or I shall not divulge any information about today's show.  I will say it was much more sparsely attended than yesterday, but I did almost as much business, which was great.

Tomovoz and Colin may decide to stay, too.

Last night I watched  ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.  I love Abbott and Costello, but this one is a real clunker.  In one scene, Dracula (Yes, Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney, Jr. are also in it) seduces the evil female doctor and then bites her on the neck.  The whole scene is filmed with them both standing in front of a mirror, in which both of them are refelcted.

Just listening to "Mr Bojangles" IMHO Jerry Jeff Walker's is still the best version. I'm fine with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version but have never really liked the one by Sammy Dvs Jnr.

Ah, karaoke!  :)

I had never been to one of those karaoke places with the private/party rooms.  Quite a nice set-up.  Nothing fancy, but it was nice knowing that you were definitely going to get to sing rather than waiting and waiting and waitng for your turn.  And, I have to say, the singing talent in Room 5 last night was pretty decent.  -And I also stumbled up a Whitney Houston Medley that was a hoot!

After we had all joined in the final chorus of "New York, New York", we headed over to a bar called Sortie.  Neat place.  Dim "mood" lighting, lots of couches, pretty potent cocktails.  And it was after I had my cocktail - a martini that was made with pureed lychee fruit and a basil-infused vodka (quite yummy!) - that I "volunteered" to make brunch this morning. ;)

On the Kitty front, since they seem to do paws and shrieks ablazing, I have decided to start putting Boo in her carrier and let her sit with me while I watch TV. While Callie does not seem amused, they can't hurt each other and may get used to being around each other.    Besides it's cooler down here for Boo

Callie and Boo are having a stare down, but not making any noise and they can't hurt each other with Boo in her carrier.   I would live to just let her out, but I think I should let them get used to each other this way.  The other ways haven't been working too well!

Well, after finally getting out of bed around 11:00, I raced down the street to Foodtown to shop for brunch.  Then after realizing that they had almost nothing I needed, I raced down to Pathmark.

I almost cancelled brunch as soon as I saw the lines at the registers - they were all at least seven or eight people deep.  And everyone had very full carts.  In fact, there were no more carts at the front of the store to use.  I was just afraid that I would not make it back in time to get all the food cooked before everyone started arriving.  But I went ahead and grabbed a basket, and proceeded to walk the aisles.

Lo and behold, by the time I was ready to check out, the lines at the Express lanes were next to nothing.  I was through the checkout line in no time!

And then it was home to cook, clean, cook some more...  And then "Brunch is served!"

I had a wonderful time.  It was great getting to spend some more time with DRs TPunk and Rodzinksi, Rodzinski's sister, and James.  *The biscuits and gravy were a special request from James - and TPunk - and I was more than happy to oblige.

Anybody want some leftover Hash Brown Casserole?

;D

Man!  Sometimes the world at large just conspires to irk people, doesn't it?  All I wanted was some food.  First, I went to Gelson's - the deli was too crowded and I didn't feel like anything anyway.  Then, I drove across the street to the Subway.  As I parked, ten people walked into the Subway.  This at five-thirty.  Well, I wasn't about to wait behind ten people.  Then I drove to Quickie's to get three slices of pizza.  There was someone ordering when I walked in - ordering five large pizzas, a few slices, a few sides, a few salads, with no end in sight.  I stormed out.  I then drove to another pizza place I'd never tried, not too far away.  I ordered three slices - there was this HUGE pizza, and they put that in to cook and to take my three slices from.  Twenty minutes later it was done.  He then cut the slices and each one of the was roughly the size of a motor home.  I've never seen bigger slices in my life and each one had to be put in its own small box, and even then the edge had to be folded over to make it fit.  I got the three slices home.  The pizza was fair, but I was so hungry I ate most of two slices (but not all), which was probably like eating four slices - blechhh.  I didn't even touch the third slice, just threw it out.  I then had to get the taste out of my mouth so I had a Snickers with almonds bar.  So, I ate terrible food (except for the Snickers) and way too much pizza, when all I wanted was three reasonble slices (which would have been roughly 1000 calories - fine for the diet).  Thankfully, I jogged, but I will be very angry if I so much as gain a half-pound from that awful pizza.

It would seem that someone within the "royal ranks" passed wind whilst on the balcony much to the amusement of all.

Notice HM the Queen's face in the first two photos, then look at her final _expression in picture three.

How guilty does HRH the Duke of Edinburgh look?

On the Kitty front, since they seem to do paws and shrieks ablazing, I have decided to start putting Boo in her carrier and let her sit with me while I watch TV. While Callie does not seem amused, they can't hurt each other and may get used to being around each other.    Besides it's cooler down here for Boo

That sounds like a good plan Cilla.  I do hope all works out eventually.

Thank you!!

I think I'm going into HHW withdrawal with this new job!!

FJL I would love to attend your "do" on the 20th if you don't mind the Vixter coming along...if its an "adults only" affair I understand completely and hope you all have a lovely time!!

I fell asleep on the float in the pool today and now the top of my thighs are sunburned.  Fortunately, I was on my back so I can still sit comfortably.

Lots of viewing tonight after I got the cleaning chores out of the way.

I finshed up with WHEN LADIES MEET. Some of it was predictable, and some of it was not and thus entertaining. I can see why Greer Garson gained a lot of fans from this film. She stood her philandering husband with all the dignity she could muster and walked out on him with the grandeur of a princess.

Herbert Marshall was a movie favorite of the time, but he's miscast in the film: too old for either Crawford or Garson.

I watched my copy of Deceit last night.  I want to watch the commentary track next.

It appears to be several million degrees  here at the moment and the humidity is 176%

Wish we had air conditioning

Well, the pot-luck barbeque was quite the success.  A lot of food was eaten by everyone and everyone just sat and stood around talking.  I met a few people and spoke with a couple of very nice ladies, one whose name is Veronica.  I've never met a Veronica before.   Now I have. :)

Well I think I have to sign off because the computer and the fan are in different rooms and I have a strong need to be in the room with the fan at the moment

I watched THE ASSASSINATION OF RICHARD NIXON tonight. The story of Samuel Byck, given a Cliffs-notes treatment in ASSASSINS, is covered more fully in this, and what a sad, pathetic man he was. A very melancholy film.

Then came COLD CASE. I didn't think I had seen the show from the description I read on the cable guide, and about halfway through I remembered that I had seen this episode, but since other shows had already been on a half hour, I just cotinued watching it. A sad tale.

Finished up with GREY'S ANATOMY. There was some sniggering sexual situations (an erection that wouldn't go down) that I thought were beneath the maturity of the characters in the show (trying to sneak him in the hospital without bosses seeing anything - good lord!), but otherwise I enjoyed the episode. The story of the lady having quintuplets was riveting.

I brought cocktail smokies in a sauce made of two parts red current jelly and one part yellow mustard.  I know people who have made it with grape jelly, but I've only used red current jelly.  Anway, it was a big success.  I used two packages of smokies and a 12 ounce jar of jelly and 6 ounces of mustard.  I thought that it would be too much, but by the time I left, there were only six smokies left!  All the rest of them had been eaten! ;D They've always been popular at work pot-lucks, so I guess it makes sense that they'd be popular out in the real world, too. ;)

So, tomorrow, I'll be able to watch tonight's DEADWOOD, ENTOURAGE, RENO 911!, and LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT.

Lucy and Desi are also waiting in the wings with TOO MANY GIRLS as well.

Just checking in before I go to bed. I finished my laundry and fried some chicken tenders to take to work for lunch tomorrow.   I recently got a handy dandy refrigerator that fits under my desk.  It's very handy.  So, now I'm cooking lunch instead of eating out.

Well....I must say it seems I have missed most of the fun! I have been terribly busy today haggling customers to purchase Benjamin Kritzer, Which I can now begin to say is truly delightful, being halfway through it myself. Unfortunatly my mother let me sleep an unseemly 3 HOURS, so I am not quite as far as I planned to be. (Sorry!, I'll call another night!).
The whole day at the celebrity show really was quite pleasant, despite it being four degrees. I was able to sneak out past the hundreds of armed gaurds with a "celebrity" ribbon, making me a practical celebrity myself. Who would have thought it would be that easy! Off to do laundry!
