TOD:

HORRIBLE BOSSES
30 MINUTES OR LESS

I'm not sure if I will get to watch these this weekend, because...starting at four this afternoon...I will be at the Austin Comic Con, hopefully signing lots of copies of my books.

They've got me placed between an actor from THE WALKING DEAD and another from THE GHOST HUNTERS.

 :o

I will be there all weekend.

Actually, this is the first autograph show I've ever done where I don't know any of the other guests.

How is Sugarfoot?

The Monarch Scientist said you're not breaking any laws (unless you have some weird state laws). She said Sugarfoot can live a few weeks. Remember that an adult monarch only lives about six weeks in adult form, unless it is in diapause (non-reproductive state). The warm house will probably break her out of diapause, so she will live only a regular lifespan. and you don't know how old she was when Molly found her.

DR Jane, I did not find the clips i was looking for (i must have put them down together somewhere).  But after looking everywhere i did find the original one that i had lost.

Over the summer I had one that was kept with my bathing suit. But when summer was over i could not find it (so my sister gave me 2 new ones). I found that one lying in a corner on my carpet. So for now that will do.  But it is seriously driving me nuts where i put the other 2 clips.

Got a bit lost trying to find the Guggenheim museum but eventually got there. Thing is, Bilbao is smaller than I expected and distances fairly short and after walking for 30 minutes I found I'd almost walked out of the city and had to walk back (OK - slight exaggeration there), I then had a walk through Casco Viejo, which is the old part of the city with narrow pedestrianised streets.

I went to use my camera but found I hadn't put the battery in - I was charging it at home and forgot to put it back in the camera  Doh!!  But fear not - I have my small camcorder which also takes stills although not with quite the same quality.

No-one seems to speak English here, which makes it tricky when ordering food.......

In Spain when browsing DVD shops (yes they still have them) I'm always amazed at the sheer quantity of classic films available which you can't get in the U.S. or Britain. I'm always wary of the quality though, bacause they are usually not released by the studios but my various small distributors. Good to know that the Spanish are so keen on classic films though.

I had a hankering for PETROUCHKA this morning and so am listening to that.  I realized when I got down to look at the huge boxed Sony set of Stravinsky that I purchased years ago that I have still not listened to most of the CDs in the set, they're still in shrinkwrap.

After last night's rehearsal, my friend, Michelle, picked me up. We went to college together, and I'm staying with her and her husband for a few days - kind of a mini-reunion of sorts. Well...

We got back to her place, we talked for a bit... And then "The Wall" hit me. -Although, I believe "The Wall" actually hit me sometime in the middle of last night's rehearsal. All the activity of the past four weeks caught up with me. So... I do believe logging on to HHW last night, but I'm not sure I ever got to posting. However, I did get nine good hours of sleep. :)

And now I need to head out for a bit and do some exploring around glorious Glendale. I'm walking distance from both the Americana and Galleria - a.k.a. MALLS - so I guess I'll be spending some time there. I also need to spend a few hours getting some charts ready for tomorrow's rehearsal, and then tonight I'll be seeing Next Fall at The Geffen Playhouse. My friend, Sheryl Kaller, directed the Broadway (and off-Broadway) production - which I missed in NYC. So... And this time round, the play's author is also starring in it.

In about 31 minutes or so, it will be 11:11:11 a.m. (you have to count the seconds to make it count) on the date 11/11/11.  (I'm noting that this here site has not yet "fallen back" for standard time).

Civilians get TWO (count 'em 2) opportunities to experience 11:11:11 (a.m. and p.m.) on 11/11/11.   Military personnel have to make do with 11:11:11 a.m. because they're on "military time".   When it's 11:11:11 p.m. for civilians, it wil be 23:11:11 for the military.

I'm just apin' Jose!

Here's a little blurb about today's Calendar Date from the New York Times:

Today it is possible to write the date with the repetition six times of a single digit. It is the eleventh day of the eleventh month of the eleventh year, and so one may save time and just put it down 11-11-11. It will be a century before the same thing can be done on Nov. 11, 2011 though, of course, on Dec. 12th next year there will be a close approximation to it with 12-12-12 as a correct presentation of the date.

Still today for the last time until the error is changed will one digit appear seven times in the date, however it be written. Today, 11-11-1911, 800 years ago this was beaten by writing 11-11-1111, on Nov. 11, 1111 but it is not likely that the precise monkish scribes at that time would have allowed so slovenly a method of recording an essential fact. As none of us is likely to be living in the year 11111, it would be well for those who delight in curious trifles to take their fill of enjoyment out of this method of dating today, 11-11-11. (New York Times, 11/11/(19)11)

Do you think any of the theaters would take a mail order request? Would Kritzerland pick it up? I think it was issued without a label, if I recall the story correctly.

Well, I need to take Ebonie (my cat) to the vet today.  I took her last week to get a claw clipped (only one was too long for me to clip) but the issue with her toes has come back.  It's either a fungus or yeast infection or something like that and it goes away, then comes back, then goes away and now it's come back again.  This time, Doctor Sarah (this is the first time that she's looked at Ebonie's claws) looked at her history and did some research and thinks that it could be a rare fungus ("rare" probably means expensive). :-\ Today, she's going to scrape some cells and see if they look like the specific kind of cells of this fungus.  If it's inconclusive, the next step might (mind you, I said might) be to biopsy :o an infected claw to confirm whatever it could be.  If it's this rare fungus, I think that she would have to go on immuno-suppressants for a while and possible steroids for the rest of her life.  I don't remember the details.

Also, Ebonie will probably has to have a couple of teeth pulled at some point. :P If they have to do the biopsy (if I even choose to go that route), they could do the teeth and claw at the same time, so she's under anesthesia only once.

For the December Gardenia show, we're reuniting four of the original pit singers from Promises, Promises (one of the originals has passed away, but we've got the gal who replaced her) - they'll be singing Turkey Lurkey Time for the first time in forty years.

The connection with the woman on FB has become even stronger.  She asked if I knew her brother & after racking my brains out & adding the ie sound to his name I made the connection.  In kindergarten a cute 1st grade boy was chasing the girls on the playground attempting to kiss them.  I thought the girls were all stupid for running & screaming.  When he noticed me I got kissed. :)

I wish I could be there. That has become my favorite Christmas song. Not carol, mind you. But the sheer daffiness of that piece makes me smile almost any time of year.

Last night, I boiled a chicken, cleaned it of skin and bones and then cut it up and stored it in the refrigerator in its own stock.

Today, I started a chicken vegetable soup in my large crockpot.   It has two hours to go (minimum).   Tons of veggies with tomato base mixing with the chicken stock.

The smell is driving me insane.

They've got me placed between an actor from THE WALKING DEAD and another from THE GHOST HUNTERS.

The heating guys just left.  The good news is they were able to get the heat back on in our bedroom.  The bad news is we still don't have heat in the rest of the house.  The good news is they will return tomorrow to complete the work instead of making us wait until Monday.

I was disappointed when I didn't have any more loads of laundry to do today.  It was much warmer with the dryer on.  I should have baked something in the oven.

It's amazing how sticky those tape things across the top of CDs are when you get around to opening a CD about 10 years after you bought it.  :)  Decided to break out some of the unopened Stravinskys.

There is nothing like an unopened Stravinsky.

I could have sworn i put them in my swimming purse...

I'm glad you found something to use.  I know how frustrating it is when something disappears & you can't figure it out.

It just bugs me because i put it somewhere i thought was a good idea. I'll bet it fell onto the floor and is hiding somewhere.

Although I ended up not going. My niece is sick and she must have passed on her cough bug to me. After I woke up and ate and was getting read to go swimming i realized my throat was very scratchy and i was not feeling 100%. I really need all my energy to swim. So no swimming today. :(

Jane, when I moved into an apartment in 2004 (or so), my mom gave me some stuff from my parents' kitchen and one thing was a box of Ziploc freezer bags.  There was a coupon in the box that had an expiration date of October 1984!

I do have a multi region DVD and Blu-ray player - but I'm sure they will be from the same HD master as the U.K. and German Blu-rays so please don't get your hopes up too high.

Actually, I don't think so, as someone named Martin Scorsese or something like that was spearheading new U.S. transfers, or so I've been told.

When I headed out earlier, I was planning to dine at some place in the Americana at Brand (http://www.americanaatbrand.com/) since it's just a few blocks from where I'm staying. I walked by a couple of places, checked out their menus, and just kept walking. I kept seeing signs for a new "Korean street food" place, and once I found it, I realized it was one of those outside kiosks/snak bars... Hmmm.... OK. And then I noticed a bunch of people waiting by the Pick-Up Window for their food... So, I went up to the booth, looked into the kitchen, and saw only one cook working the line... And whole slew of tickets on the pass... So... I passed.

As it turned out, there was an In-N-Out just around the corner - Surprise! - so I ended up having a cheeseburger, fries (extra-crispy) and a Coke. -And that meal basically lasted me for the rest of the day. Almost. ;)

I had planned to try out "Top Chef" Michael Voltaggio's new sandwich place ink.sack (http://mvink.com/menu/), but once I got there around 3:30, I was still full from lunch, so... I just walked on over to the Beverly Center for a bit of window shopping. And a manicure. :)

I eventually made my way to simplethings sandwich & pie restaurant (http://www.simplethingsrestaurant.com/) on 3rd Street for dinner. It was quite good, and perfect for a very Fall-ish day in Los Angeles. Butternut Squash-Coconut Soup, Chicken Curry Pot Pie, and a Salted Caramel "Cutie Pie". YUM!

And then I made my way down to Wilshire Blvd. to catch the bus over to the Geffen Playhouse... Or so I thought.
Title: Re: ALL ELEVENS
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 11, 2011, 10:20:48 PM
So...

I boarded the bus at 6:50. According to the timetable - and to Google Maps - I should have been at UCLA by 7:35. Well, by 7:30 I realized that I was nowhere near the UCLA campus, so I hopped off the bus hoping to catch a cab. Well... Since I ain't in New York City... Well... By 7:40 I had resigned myself to missing the show. -Thankfully, my ticket was basically a freebie, so... But still I had really wanted to see the show.

So I hopped on another bus to downtown L.A. so that I could catch the 90/91 back to Glendale. Well...
Title: Re: ALL ELEVENS
Post by: JoseSPiano on November 11, 2011, 10:27:48 PM
By the time I got back downtown, I had somehow lost my sense of direction. I ended up walking around for a few minutes before I realized exactly where I was in relationship to Pershing Square. Thankfully, my bus was running late, and I was able to hop on the 90/91 after only waiting a minute or so. Well...

We got on the 110 and there was a back-up at the Figueroa exit. There were flashing lights in the distance, and everyone was backtracking on the exit ramp to get back on the highway, including some other busses. So, my bus driver followed suit, and skipped the exit and kept driving on 110. He eventually got off at an exit a mile or two up the road. Then he pulled over on the side of the road... And called dispatch. He had no idea how to get back to his designated route. He even got out of the bus to walk down to the last intersection he had passed in order to give the dispatcher his location. By that time, everyone on the bus - there were only about eight of us - started to speak up. I walked up to him with my iPhone and Google Maps, and told him that Figueroa was the next major intersection. "Really?!? How come you didn't tell me that before?!?!?" -That's when my fellow passengers started to go, "Aren't you supposed to be the one who knows where to go? We thought you were waiting for directions from your dispatcher?!?!"

Once he got up to Figueroa, he back-tracked over the stops he missed, and I eventually made it back to Glendale safe and sound.

So, Playbill.com says the cast recording of "A Christmas Story" will be available only at the theaters where the showis touring. Anybody know how to land a copy of that? Do you think any of the theaters would take a mail order request? Would Kritzerland pick it up? I think it was issued without a label, if I recall the story correctly.

DR JohnG - I believe you should be able to eventually get a copy via the writing team's website: Pasek & Paul (http://www.pasekandpaul.com/).

*I also know some people in the cast, so... Lemme send some emails out. -They're only running in Hershey through this weekend before heading onto someplace-I-can't-remember.
