Title: TOO MANY DESSERTS
Post by: bk on December 26, 2011, 01:08:10 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sweet and dessert-like, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they too are eating too many desserts.  I also forgot to mention that at the screening I had a little piece of pumpkin cheesecake.

The day after Christmas and I'm up at 6:30am eating my oatmeal, banana, raisins, walnuts and cinnamon and a cup of coffee.

I'm listening to Song from the Shows with my dear friend, Alex Hall. It's broadcast from Middlesbrough in the Teeside area of Northeast England.

We had Roast Beast with mashed potatoes and gravy on Christmas Eve. We also had stuffed mushrooms and veggies and fresh rolls. We had apple and cherry pies for dessert along with espresso and anisette.

We had a whole turkey dinner yesterday at Anthony's Uncle and Aunt's house. There were 12 people including a 2 year with enough energy for everyone in the room. It was great fun. We had tiramisu and cheesecake for dessert.

Good morning, all! Today I must finish the Fashion Show. These last two parts - the two pianos - have far too many notes and take forever.

I've also got the first drafts for the DEAREST ENEMY scores, and I'm itching to get started on them.

That's my day.

BK,

If I recall correctly, I used to have a DVD of the original FRIGHT NIGHT, released by Sony.

So, even if it's OOP, what's the big deal with this limited edition?

We watched BLACKTHORN yesterday, a very good western shot in Bolivia.

It's based on the premise that Butch Cassidy did not die in that shoot-out.

Sam Shepard played the older Butch.

Yes arguing with internet experts is useless - and no they never do backtrack even when proven wrong.  There are a couple of Yahoo Mail Groups that I finally left because ONE person would make things miserable for every body else, and the moderator would not ban them.....   The Annette Funicello Group was taken over by some idiot poster.....and I miss everybody else.  Now and then I am tempted to go back to see if she is still there.....but it is not worth it.

DR ELMORE - I was the assistant director and stage manager for a Steve Tesich play called SQUARE ONE.  I think it was the first production away from New York.  He attended our Opening Night in Indianapolis and was very nice to everyone, and said he liked the show....  He also signed our scripts which was very nice.....I still have it in my collection.

It was very shocking that he died at such a young age.

I am a big fan of his play BABA GOYA aka NOURISH THE BEAST, and I love BREAKING AWAY. I never met him. I got to know Amy and her mother when they would show up at events at Ron Raines' apartment. I always felt sorry for Amy because she, like Emily Loesser, never got to know her father before he died.

We have LOTS o'dessert leftovers here.  We still have Ginny's Ecumenical Pecan Cake, which was delish (but not quite what I was expecting--I thought it would have a "crust" of carmelized pecans, shows you how much I can deign from reading recipes), as well as an equally delish apple cake that Betsy made yesterday for the big dinner with company we had at our place last night.

Speaking of which, the family who visited brought a very fun game we had never played before, though many of you probably have:  Taboo.  You have to describe a word without using a list of words underneath the word you're attempting to get your team to guess, and of course that list includes every descriptor you think of off the top of your head.  :)

BK, thanks for your rant on the a generation's over-adulation of mediocre movies from the eighties.  GOONIES is one of the most inexplicably beloved movies of that generation and it is a bad imitiation of bad Spielberg at his worst.  Unfortunately, most of these eighties lovers are now running the studios.  I recently saw the new CLASH OF THE TITANS.  The old eighties CLASH was an example of a tired, mediocre Harryhausen being left behind the times; but this new CLASH makes Harryhausen's CLASH look like a masterpiece by comparision.

You try getting someone to say Atlantic Ocean without using these words:  water, body, coast, east, Pacific, and several others I can't recall right now.  I said "A large mass of liquid next to New York."  They got it.  :)

TOD - Christmas Eve, we had a late lunch/early dinner at Panera before the service at Rob & Mary Linda's church.  I had creamy tomato soup and chicken cobb salad.  Later in the evening, Richard and I had popcorn and I ate the apple they threw into our order at Panera.

Our Christmas Day dinner was much more traditional:

Sliced ham and turkey from Honey Baked Ham
Cheesy potatoes
Green beans, slow-cooked with some ham
Cinnamon pears
Lemon/lime jello pineapple cottage cheese surprise
Challah
Chocolate bourbon pecan pie, made by Mary Linda
Assorted cookies, made by me (actually, everything was made by me, except the pie - no wonder I'm tired!)

I just spent the last half hour or so reading this (http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2011/12/war_bride_esther_gavin.html) story, whose Part 1 is in this morning's Oregonian.  Heartbreaking, but also an amazing testament to "six degrees."  It probably won't mean a lot to you non-NWers, but if you read it, the story of the kid who shot the police chief has been front page news here for months, and the Benson family is kind of like Portland's "Ewing" family.

TOD:

Noche de los Rabanos (Dec. 23)
Pork pate with bourbon-soaked prunes and various crudites
Grilled lamb chops
A vegetable medley with fennel, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes and more
Bok choy.
Fruit and cheese
Four excellent wines, including an amazing Turley Zinfandel.

Christmas Eve:
A smorgasbord of appetizers including, Canadian Christmas pies, duck rillettes, tapenade, charcuterie and cheeses
Red Lentil Soup
Seafood Crepe
Mandarin Orange Granita
Boeuf Bourguinon with homemade bread
Buche de Noel complete with the meringue mushrooms
A Cherry Christmas cocktail and plenty of champagne and wines plus a taste of Peppermint Mocha Kahlua

Christmas:
An antipasti plate with various cheeses, salami, olives and Portuguese sardines
Veal osso bucco with plenty of marrow in the bones (my favorite flavor of the weekend)
Mashed potatoes
Green beans with prosciutto
Sauteed zucchini with Parmesan
Tiramisu
Two Barolos and two ice wines, including one made from apples

I indulged in at least a little of everything but the buche. After a five-course sit-down dinner, I just didn't have room. But it was beautiful.

Like DR Laura, I would not venture out to shopping malls today. There was a time when I did so selectively, but no more. As for Ikea, some of my purchases there were just fine, others were crap. George, pixellation on BDs is almost always caused by something very minor, like a sticky fingerprint or the like.  Just look at the bottom of the disc under a good light and you may find the answer to your problems.

I did look at the disc and it didn't seem to have any prints on it.  When I played it in my Blu-ray player at home, it was absolutely fine.  My niece wants to get her own copy, so hopefully the one she gets will be fine.

Madly getting a bunch of charts done.  This mini-musical I was roped into doing opens in a couple of weeks and so I really should try to get it finished before then.  ;)

It might be her firmware, then, though usually that doesn't affect things like pixellation--discs simply won't play at all.

Went to see "The Artist" today. One thing that was quite wonderful: The audience respected the silence of the film. Except for a late-arriving couple who need flash lights to find a seat, everyone was really quiet.

I found the film quite enjoyable in a good, old-fashioned way. Anyone who has seen "A Star Is Born" and "Singin' in the Rain" will know every plot twist, but the cinematography was excellent, the black and white looked gorgeous and the main actors were ingratiating. It wasn't perfect by any means, but it was highly entertaining.

I have not liked a Susan Sarandon film since THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, and she is not the reason I liked that movie.

I saw Susan Sarandon do A COUPLE OF WHITE CHICKS SITTING AROUND TALKING, Off-Broadway, and then spent a wonderful hour hanging out with Susan and co-star Eileen Brennan.  I found both of these ladies to be even more delightful off stage, than they were in doing the play.

I'm sure glad that I didn't pay attention to the person I spoke to at Austin's Sanitation Department a couple of weeks ago.

I called, asking if, since Monday is a holiday, would I be getting my normal trash pick-up on Monday, or would it be pushed until Tuesday?

She said that it would be Tuesday.

Well, just to be safe, I put the trash cans out last night and, sure enough, they were picked up today.

I ventured out to one day-after-Christmas sale and lived to tell the tale.  Kathryn's, my beloved local Vera Bradley enabler retailer is having a big sale all week.  Today I bought Lauren's birthday present (Vera) and a couple of beads for my Chamilia bracelet, one of which I bought with my Christmas money from my Mom.  She will be pleased with my choice  ;)

We are going to brave the crowds and take the kids to Ikea today to get Gabe a nightstand.  We have never been to an Ikea before, so we're looking forward to it.

Be sure to pick up a map on your way in - otherwise you may never get out!

Back from another trip to the Apple store.  After making sure that I had a sale for my computer (easy), I got the new iMac 27inch thing with completely up to date everything, more memory and gigs that I could possibly use and much faster processors than mine.  My computer was behaving erratically, so it will be cleaned and serviced and then the buyer can have essentially a new machine and it will have the latest operating system on it, too.

So, I have to use the laptop until the data transfers are done - I let the Apple people do that and it takes twenty-four to forty-eight hours, but my guy said he'd try to get it done sooner than later.  Then he or someone will spend thirty minutes with me showing me all the new stuff there is.  Also got the latest version of Word - I had a very old version and it, too, was causing some weird stuff and I cannot take any chances with documents I have.

Back to the last piano part: about 43 bars to go. I think I may take a trip to Staples to celebrate.

I also need some lunch. Maybe eggs. I'm saving the pork chop I took home from Skip and Fred's last night for dinner.

Did Skp and Fred know that you took the pork chop?

I felt safe bringing the other computer in because my Time Capsule backed up just before I unplugged the computer, so its entire contents are on the Time Machine part of Time Capsule.  I also got a new Time Capsule because mine was first generation and is basically outmoded.  So, I'll just box it up and save it, as it has everything from the old computer on it, should I ever need anything.

I wouldn't even attempt IKEA the day after Christmas.

But then, I wouldn't attempt any store the day after Christmas.

Me, neither.  Normally.  But for some reason I felt compelled to run out to Target this afternoon to pick up all four seasons of MAD MAN at 9.99 each.  I wound up running into the crowds and traffic leaving the stores and also dealing with the late afternoon sun.  Had a major headache by the time I came home. Feh!

Maybe I would enjoy her company off the screen.

I've been back and forth trying to decide which of the next three days I'll go to work on (Friday is a holiday!). We decided not to do Ikea, since it really is quite a haul from here (probably 50 miles round trip).  Instead we went to the local mall, where it was absolute mayhem.  We looked at nightstands in the Penney's Furniture Store and laughed (LAUGHED I tell you) at the absurd prices they were charging.  I picked up a couple of pairs of pants with a gift card I had and then we went to Freddy's where we got a perfectly serviceable nightstand for the outstanding sum of $12.99.

Just watched something most interesting - the guy with the screening room gave me a DVD that had my episode of Lucas Tanner on it.  I don't think I've seen it since either the day we shot it or the day it aired - the show lasted only a season (if that) and has never to my knowledge been in reruns.  This was taken from a 16mm print.  Other than knowing I did the episode and the one anecdote I shared in my book about wanting to wear glasses and director Gordon Hessler's response, I remembered absolutely nothing about it.  The first surprise was seeing us on location on a trail near a lake somewhere - have no idea where and have no memory of it at all, which is unusual since I never got to go on location anywhere.  I also can't remember where we actually shot the school scenes - maybe Marshall High maybe somewhere in the Valley.  Alan Abelew (George in Nudie Musical) was a regular, and the guest star was beautiful Lee Purcell.  My pal Trish Soodik was also a semi-regular - she died a couple of years ago.  And I knew I'd worked with Kimberly Clark before and now I know where, since she was in it, too.  I had more to do than I remembered and the glasses were a good touch, I think.  The show was reasonably well written but could not be done today as it was then - about a teacher whose student is in love with him.  The best thing about the show, though, was David Shire's music - I'll have to tell him that he actually wrote music to something I acted in - he'll get a kick out of it.  David Hartman was Lucas Tanner and he's very good if a little weird at times.  I think he found his calling soon after this show with Good Morning America or whatever show he was on.

The mall was okay today but not as good as I remember.  Got there at 11:30am but only the shoe stores were open. And the place was packed. Almost nothing good opened before 1pm.  Got a new pair of slippers for $2.99 (they are super comfy). And some Dora and Hello Kitty Xmas wrap for $1.25.  I think the men did better. My brother in law got a new Blu-Ray player and my dad got some electronic stuff.

There were huge line-ups in front of a few stores and i don't really know why (since there are not usually a lot of people in these stores): Lululemon and Joshua Perets (the Pink store). The latter opened at 11:30am and still by 1:30pm had huge lines.

I really wanted to got to Old Navy. BUt by 1:30pm the line-up for the cash was so long there was no way i was going to even attempt to buy anything.

I forgot to mention that I was told who the loathsome neighbors across from me are - the ones who moved their party to my night after doing it the day before for years and then moved their time earlier so their guests in their humungous SUVs could take all the parking places - the ones who left a red Fiat parked in the same exact place for twelve weeks until I finally called the traffic department and the car got ticketed and scheduled to be towed - they finally moved it then and it hasn't been back, but there five guests who have apparently moved in for two weeks are still taking up most of the parking places.  Well, it's the daughter of Annette Funicello - now everything makes sense, because I don't think anyone in that house works.  They were given the house by their mother (who used to live there I gather, as a child), and I'm sure have been given everything else.  They certainly act entitled and are thoroughly obnoxious (as is their dog) and unfriendly.

I wonder if the Dee of the title is the same character as Judge Dee from an old ABC Movie of the Week who was played by Keye Luke.  I think it was a series pilot and was based on a mystery novel series character.

Good Evening!

...Just got back from JR's - it's one of those "special interest" establishments. Since it was a Monday night, it was a Musical Theatre Monday. It was quite interesting. They played some of the standard show clips from The Tonys, "The View", etc., but they also showed clips from "Xanadu" (the movie), "Can't Stop the Music" (the Village People movie) as well as a sing-along version of "Once Upon a December" (from "Anastasia").

Oh, and "The Pirate Movie"!?!?!

Before heading to JR's, my friend, Eric, and I had dinner at Sichuan Village out Chantilly, VA. It was quite good. The chefs there were all apparently trained in China, and the food that we had was obviously authentically prepared. Our waitress checked with us a few times to make sure we were ordering the spicier dishes on purpose, and once we assured that we were, well... The "ma la" was perfect. Hot enough to make your nose run and your forehead perspire, but not enough to burn out your taste buds.

And before that, I took Eric on a tour of some of the larger Korean supermarkets in the area, as well as a walk-thru of Eden Center in Falls Church. Eden Center is basically a collection of mini-malls in one big strip mall. And they're all Vietnamese establishments: restaurants, grocery stores, housewares, barber shops, furniture stores, etc.

I got seasons 1, 2 and 4, DR JRand.  I was going to try another Target for season 3 but the traffic and sun were getting to me and I realized that the sale is on for the entire week so I can try for it another day.

Do you happen to know if the "Modern Family" sets dropped down to $9.99 too? Like they were on Black Friday weekend.

We are supposed to get some kind of snap tomorrow in the Philadelphia area--wild winds and torrential downpores and maybe some thunderstorms.  Sounds more like Good Friday weather.

And of course like so much theater, the actors are getting paid, but the musicians who are providing them with music?  Nada.

Hmmm... In my experience, it's usually been the other way around. Even going back to my community theater days.

I don't think they were, DR Jose--I can't picture the price reduction tag beneath the copies I saw on the rack.

In fact, I just took a gander at the flyer and MODERN FAMILY is not featured.

I spent part of the evening rewatching the first two episodes of DOWNTON ABBEY on dvd.  I want to revisit the first season before the second starts in the next week or two.

Really, if you haven't seen this show yet, check it out!

NO MAIL TODAY.....it is a Federal Holiday!

I did not know that!  I looked at the USPS website and didn't see a holiday on the 26th.  Now I can stop staring out my window searching for my mail lady (or listening for her--the woman carries on non-stop cell phone conversations as she delivers.)

I had checked the calendar on the USPS website too. There's no "holiday" listed on the "grid", but it does show up under "Postal Holidays 2011" under the "Newsroom" section on about.usps.com. ???

And, yes, next Monday, January 2, 2012, is another Federal Holiday.

bk - As for this observation in today's Notes:

"Then I did the four-mile jog, surprised that the streets weren’t completely empty – in fact, there were a surprising number of cars out – does no one stay home and celebrate Christmas anymore?"

Well... Just remember that not everyone celebrates, observes Christmas. Or Sundays for that matter. ::)

Playing and figuring things out. So far I've got everything working and looking the way I like it - the only problem so far that I'll have to call about tomorrow is that it's not finding or recognizing my wireless printer.  Have to figure that one out.  It should have taken all those settings from the old computer so I'm not sure what's up with that.  Getting used to the new keyboard and still getting used to the trackpad, but am already loving that I don't have to move a mouse around anymore.
