Well, you've read the notes, the notes had beauty and even a little beast, and now it is time for you to post until the beautiful and beastly cows come home.

Hmmmm.....I knew Annette lived in Studio City when she was working at Disney......but I had no idea she lived across the street from MR BK's current home!  Lovely......so your neighbor is Gina.  I think her name is Gina Portman now.

I used to have a picture of the house.....maybe I will be able to find it....  Seems to me it was a nice one story ranch type house on a corner.....and they may have put in a swimming pool with some of Annette's money.

Good morning, all!

All the running around and partying this week has caught up with me. I'm not feeling sickly, but I am feeling very very tired. I had to force myself to get our of bed and move about. I suspect it will be a quiet day in which I accomplish very little and lounge about quite a lot.

I drove to the SpeedLine train station this morning and when I pulled up to the parking lot gate, I reached into my pocket for my SpeedLine pass and realized that I forgot to put my SpeedLine pass in my pocket.  I not only forgot that pass, but also my Septa train pass and my office keycard.  So I had to drive all the way back home and then all the way back to the SpeedLine train station. (I could have simply paid for the SpeedLine fare and bought a one day pass for the Septa train, but I would have really missed my office keycard.)  Anyway, I got in only a half-hour late.  I'll make up for it by leaving a half-hour early this afternoon.

I picked up Wally Lamb's "Wishin' and Hopin'" at Christmas and Annette is the cousin, of sorts, of the main character. I don't know if she enters the picture as an actual character at any point.

I just wish she made "Serial Mom" for John Waters. Much as I love Kathleen Turner in that movie, Annette would have been much more insane.

I like most Steven Spielberg films....who am I to say.....but I have a BIG problem....

I liked JAWS.....the story of a few men....but mainly one....fighting a nemesis.....

I looked forward to CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND....I thought it would be the same.....but NO.....the man eventually ended up fighting the whole army who didn't believe him.....and hundreds of people were brought in for him to struggle against....I thought it would be one man's experience with said encounter.

THEN.....Poltergeist and ET did the same thing.....it's not enough that our hero fights his foe....he has to fight the ENTIRE WORLD.....

And so it has gone in most of the rest of his movies......MOST.....so I am not a BIG fan.

I do want to see WAR HORSE, but might wait for the Blu Ray......

This year's HGTV Dream Home is in Park City, Utah.  My father had the opportunity to purchase the entire town of Park City (and, no, I am neither joking nor exaggerating) in the early 1960s, when it was a dilipidated bunch of former gold rush shacks.  My mother got quite exercised about it and told him that he'd better not waste their money on such a foolish enterprise.  :)

I accused one of my copyists of losing the musical sequence chart for the work on ROBERTA, and it turns out that I had it all along. Oy! What's run away with my mind?

I just sent an apologetic email along with the additional adjustments to be added to the chart. This show's bar count is longer than a Wagner opera.

I think I'll begin the "Yesterdays" Dance, and see how long it takes me to create a 120 measure score from orchestra parts.

I love these surreal phonograph covers for the show!

I'm glad I held off on downloading the Bebe Neuwirth recording--I checked it again at lunch time and the price dropped to just $4.99.

I'm about halfway through it and I have to say that it disappoints.  I can't put my finger on it, but there seems to be a flatness to it overall, as if she and the band were cranking out demos or something.  It's a shame because it's a fun set of songs.  It sounds like she needed an audience for this to make it come alive.

Today's The Times They Are A-Changin' Rant:  When I was being raised, we were taught that the "t" in often was silent, and in fact I knew a guy who was working on his Master's Degree at the same time I was working on mine who did a thesis on the different "classes" of people who pronounced the word variously with the "t" silent or not.  In those days (early 80s), saying the "t" was a sign of a less "privileged" socioeconomic upbringing, at least according to this guy's research.  In the ensuing years, things have changed and it's harder and harder to find anyone who pronounces "often" without saying the "t."

Last night I watched WAKING SLEEPING BEAUTY, which BK reviewed here a couple months ago. I enjoyed it. I knew that Don Bluth had done two stints at Disney--one before BK and I worked with him and one after--but I hadn't realized that he was such a significant player there. Some at Disney called him "another Walt." My God!! Don and his brother Fred are both ENORMOUSLY talented.

Jeanne, there certainly was a geographical element, but as I recall in this guy's thesis, the geography was actually more linked to socioeconomic status--in other words, better off people in, say, Appalachia wouldn't pronounce the "t" while the backwoods folk would.

Speaking of animators, there was a Christmas party given at the Bluth home in Santa Monica one year. Don was urged to do his bird imitation. It was incredible. This was not some imitation bird call. Don, through body language, showed us how a bird prepared for flight. I realized that in order to draw birds all day--and do so realistically--one had to carefully observe them. Don had "internalized" their movements to an amazing degree. I'll never forget it.

You--and your friend--may be quite correct. I had noticed that friends who pronounced the "t" were usually from the South. They also didn't have much money, but I only made the first connection.

Gonna see Jane and Keith tonight at Aunt Roberta's... haven't seen her since my parents' funerals 6 and a half years ago... it'll be nice to check in, say hi, and wave bye-bye to our Lassners as they fly off to the South Seas...

Just read a disturbing report:  THE ADDAMS FAMILY will be closing on B'way this Saturday and, after having played over one year and eight months, will still lose *all* of its original 16.5 million dollar investment.

Reading something like that makes me realize--I really don't understand show business.

I think it happens much more often than you think. And I also think that several shows that have trumpeted recoupment have flat out lied.
I don't think Memphis has made back its investment either and it cost much less to stage than Addams Family.

Does streaming through Netflix make money for the show investors, (and/or the DVD/Blu-ray that's going to be released) or does that (potential) profit go to completely different people/investors?  I've always wondered about that.

Richard and I ventured out in the rain to visit the southern-most branch of the library system where I used to work and to look for half-price gift wrap at Barnes & Noble.  The rain was changing to snow and traffic was snarling up when we left the bookstore, so we were glad to come home for the evening.  I don't think the snow will amount to much, but we're both still pretty tired from the holiday weekend.

The first and big backup is done and worked just as it should.  Hopefully subsequent backups will be swift and easy - my old Time Machine was malfunctioning and backups were taking forever every time - it's supposed to just back up what you've done the previous hour, not everything.  So, hopefully that will work correctly now.  The printer was a whole other story.  Apple wouldn't help, so I had to call HP and have them do it.  They did it and it printed whatever was in the queue so we assumed all was well.  However, after the backup I attempted to print again and it wouldn't.  I called HP again and this time they had me completely re-set up the printer from scratch and now all is working well.  So, that should be it, except for iCloud, which I may call about later.  It seems I have to re-jigger mobile me to get iCloud to work, so I guess I'll have them talk me through that.

As I was saying...

I got up this morning, showered, packed and then hopped on the bus to the Metro station where I hopped on a train to Union Station. Once I got to Union Station, I grabbed some breakfast since I had about an hour to kill before my bus departure.

The bus ride down to Richmond was OK. However, it did leave a little late, was packed, and sat in some bad traffic for the first half of the trip. We arrived in Richmond about an hour later. But, again, it was OK. -I basically zonked out for most of the trip.

Steve picked me up, and we headed to Stella's for lunch. It was his first time at the next location. He really liked it too.

Time Machine attempted to do its short backup and was "delayed." So it was back on the phone with Apple and this time I really let them have it - I got a senior advisor for Time Capsule on the phone and he got me through everything and finally (hopefully) figured out the issue and it just did the small backup, which unlike my last Time Capsule, which would have taken forty-five minutes, it did it in about twenty seconds.  NOW things should all be working well!

Canadians have always used the "t."

I'm home!  Thanks to all for the travel vibes.

It was a long day, but I arrived at DCA only about 10 minutes later than originally scheduled since I was on a non-stop flight.

This is what happened.   We boarded the flight to JFK at 2:15 for a 3:05 departure.  I called my friend in DC and told him what was going on.  He offered to check my flight status (for both flights ) on the Delta website.  In a minute or so he said, "This is odd.  It says your flight is cancelled."  I told him that we were all on board and asked why they would do that if the flight had been cancelled. Well, we chatted for a few more minutes and sure enough, the gate agent got on the speaker and told us the flight had indeed been cancelled due to weather and traffic control problems in New York.

My friend found the number for Delta and I called while still on the plane.  I was able to get a non-stop flight to Washington, leaving at 5:25.  I had to go to the luggage area and after about an hour the luggage from the cancelled flight came out.  Then I had to go to US Airways to check in there. Then back through security.   I got a little somthing to eat.    I went to the gate for my flight and the agent said that there were no flights allowed to DC and that the flight would be leaving at about 6:10.    But shortly thereafter we were able to board and actually left at about 5:55.

I had broken my own rule--I always try and get a nonstop morning flight, but the fares were substantially higher for those flights at the time I made my reservation.

I've learned today that the newspaper I worked for in Florida, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, is to be sold by the New York Times. the paper is making money but the NYT is selling all 16 of its regional papers for a ridiculously low price. I wonder what's up with that. And I hope all goes well for the folks still there.

Watching the Barbara Cook tribute during the Kennedy Center honors tonight, I would swear that Rob Ashford rehashed the same choreography he used last year during the Jerry Herman tribute.

But other than that (and other than Glenn Close wheelbarrowing "Losing My Mind" into keys I never heard it done in before), it was a wonderful segment.  All those glorious voices.  It was literally a box of vocal chocolates.

More drama with the printer - it keeps going offline and not being recognized.  Fortunately HP helper was there late and we think we finally figured out that it's happening when Time Machine is doing a backup - it's dropping the connection.  I turned Time Machine off and we'll know in the morning if that's it - Time Machine has an option to exclude certain devices from backing up and I'll call Apple and have them walk me through that.
